I spend a lot of time in the wine section. Not because I drink wine, just because I work in a grocery store and a lot of people decide they don’t want the wine they picked out and I spend a lot of time trying to return wine to its proper place on the shelf. Point being, wine baffles me. Really. There’s an art to it that escapes me.
I’m not talking about the freshly twenty-one sorority sisters that go through a bottle a night, though there may be a skill there as well, I am talking about the people who buy their wine and the ingredients for a home-made dinner and know that the smoky richness of one will complement the lemony zing of the other (see, that made no sense because I don’t know what I’m talking about).
Because the pairing of wine with food is so far beyond me, the entire concept of pairing a wine with a true crime topic fascinated me. That is exactly what Lucy, Amanda, and Kenyon do on their podcast Wine & Crime, where you can
join three friends as they chug wine, chat true crime, and unleash their worst Minnesotan accents.
Wine & Crime comes from the deep, dark place in the mind that is fascinated by the people who disregard the law in pursuit of their own twisted fantasies. Of course, the part of the mind that loves these stories is much closer to the surface for some:
the three of us have always shared a morbid fascination with creepy stories and true crime, as well as a very dark sense of humor.
The trio took their interest and turned it into a podcast, despite their lack of experience.
We’re definitely not experts … But we still definitely dedicate a lot of time and effort into researching our cases.
That research is split three ways, with Lucy choosing a psychological factor that motivates crime and Amanda and Kenyon separately digging up cases that relate to that topic, only giving each other enough information to ensure that they aren’t looking into the same villain. “We keep everything a secret until recording so our reactions will be genuine and off the cuff.”
Our format sets us apart. We pick a true crime topic for each episode, pair the topic with a wine, delve into the background/psychology/statistics of that topic, before covering two related cases.
Wine & Crime also separates itself from the sea of true crime podcasts and shows by creating an atmosphere of camaraderie.
We’re childhood friends and most listeners say they feel like they get drawn in and become part of our longstanding friendship.
If you are looking for dark humor and true crime, wine suggestions and lots of laughs, the Wine & Crime gals have everything you’re after!
