Mainly Movies

I have been writing for Podchaser for a few months now, and I think that it is time to lay out all my expert secrets. There aren’t very many because I am not an expert, but when I write these Chasing Pods pieces, I interview the creators. I know, these are already newsworthy insider secrets. But really, I have five set questions that I ask everyone, and I add questions as I go based on the conversation and little things I think our readers would want to know more about.

The first of these five questions is exactly the same for every creator: Beyond the taglines, can you tell me a little about what your podcast is? I have gotten answers that range from seconds to minutes, but none quite like Aaron’s from Mainly Movies.

Well, um, we tried to title it in a way that is pretty descriptive of what our podcast is about. Um, so it’s mainly about movies.

Insider secret number 3: I occasionally break my neck rolling my eyes during these interviews.  But listening back, I can see that I had no one to blame but myself. See, Aaron and DJ co-host a show that’s as simple as it sounds.

Yeah, it’s kind of just two friends talking about movies,” DJ expounded a bit for me. “I guess we try and make it as conversational and as casual as we can.”

The duo used to work together in college and constantly discussed and saw movies. So, when Aaron got a job that moved him to a new city and DJ got married, Aaron gave DJ a recording microphone and told him they had to make a podcast. Classic forcing-someone-to-stay-in-touch-and-be-your-friend behavior.

Actually, friendship has been one of the best parts of the two reviewing movies on their show.

I guess my favorite part,” says DJ, “is we’ve involved a few of our friends to bring on as guests. It’s been cool being able to involve sort of our inner circle into this hobby that we both really like.”

Beyond that, the duo is still in awe that they are even on iTunes and being listened to by anyone since they remember just being guys that talked about the podcasts they were listening to. However, being one of those podcasts definitely comes with its challenges.

At the beginning, we had some technical difficulties,” says Aaron. “We recorded an entire podcast to start out with, I think we were doing Thor or something, and I didn’t record it right, so that entire episode is gone.”

Those technical difficulties have continued to some extent with the duo recording in separate cities and sharing files that end up being edited together. But the show is rewarding as both hosts have had coworkers or family members listening in and enjoying what they make.

Aaron and DJ aren’t planning on moving backward and covering classic films, so if you’re the first in theaters to see new releases or if you’re trying to find out if a movie is worth seeing, Mainly Movies is the show for all your new movie questions.
