Life is full of

0:02

transitional moments that propel us into

0:04

the unknown, which can bring up challenging

0:06

emotions. But what if we could approach these

0:09

moments with openness? The

0:11

new season of Awaken, a podcast

0:13

from the Rubin Museum of Art, offers insights

0:16

into the constant change that we

0:18

all experience. It's non-negotiable from

0:20

birth to death and everything in between.

0:22

It's hosted by Grammy award-winning vocalist,

0:25

Falou, and with various guests.

0:28

Each episode considers a life-defining moment

0:30

and uses an artwork from the Rubin's

0:32

collection as a jumping off

0:34

point to explore life after.

0:37

Wake up to what's possible. Listen to Awaken wherever

0:40

you get your podcasts or at rubinmuseum.org.

0:43

It's

0:48

the 10 percent happier podcast. I'm your

0:50

host, your boy, Dan Harris.

1:02

Hello, everybody. Time for a bonus meditation. A

1:04

lot of people are sleeping on walking

1:06

meditation, but it is a great practice, especially

1:09

if you're sleepy. If you're

1:11

too tired to sit and meditate, try doing a few

1:13

minutes of walking meditation. Not only is it easier

1:16

to stay awake, but it's also a great way to

1:18

get mindfulness out of your head and into your

1:20

body.

1:21

Our teacher du jour is the

1:23

great Sharon Salzberg. She has got a new book

1:25

out. It's called Finding Your Way. To celebrate

1:27

the release, we're making one of her courses

1:29

over on the 10 percent happier app free until

1:32

October 23rd. 10 percent

1:34

nicer as a starter course in loving kindness

1:37

meditation. Highly recommend it.

1:39

Here we go now with Sharon Salzberg.

1:42

Hi, this is Sharon. Walking

1:45

meditation is an example of bringing mindfulness

1:48

into an activity of day-to-day life. Very

1:51

often if we're walking or going from place to

1:53

place, we're on automatic pilot

1:57

with our attention completely consumed by

1:59

what we expect will happen. happen where we're going,

2:02

and we miss the whole transition point. Even

2:05

if you're in a crowded, busy environment, you

2:08

can use awareness of something happening in your body

2:11

as a touchstone to help you feel grounded

2:13

and connected to the moment. You

2:18

can do this practice wherever you are, just

2:22

finding a space to walk back and forth. But

2:25

if you're in a public space, it's

2:27

not that wise to slow down a lot. Just

2:30

walk at a normal pace. We

2:34

do this practice with our eyes open, and

2:37

the awareness we bring to the body is a very

2:39

light awareness. To

2:42

begin, the first

2:44

thing we usually say is bring your energy

2:47

down. Feel

2:49

your feet from your feet. To

3:04

begin with, walk at a normal pace. So

3:09

that way you can feel just the sensations

3:11

of your feet touching the ground, as

3:14

though touch, touch,

3:17

touch, touch. Or

3:34

perhaps you feel your whole body moving through space.

3:39

We're sensing the actual sensations.

3:43

You don't need to name them, but feel them.

4:01

If you're feeling just the sensations of your body

4:03

moving through space, you can

4:05

alternate between that and feeling

4:07

your feet touch the ground.

4:13

Touch, touch, touch,

4:18

touch. After

4:30

some time, if you wish, and it seems right, you can slow down some more.

4:55

Feel the sensations of your leg

4:57

going up, going down.

5:02

Next leg up, down. You

5:44

become aware of the exquisite sensations

5:46

of each part of the movement.

5:51

Heaviness, lightness, pressure,

5:54

hardness, softness. Without

5:57

naming them, you can feel them. Then

6:27

when you finish your walking session, see

6:30

if you can bring this caring attention to sensations,

6:33

this kind of awareness into your day. Thank

6:38

you for your practice.
