1:49

1:53

we've got a great

1:56

lineup of presentations here

1:58

for Sabbath school quarterly, on Jesus

2:00

Christ's last moments, and of course the

2:02

cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

2:04

which means so much to us. Before

2:07

we get started, we're gonna have a

2:09

word of prayer, and then we'll dive

2:11

right in. Sister Jill, would you like

2:14

to pray for it? Sure. Holy Father,

2:16

we come before you and as we

2:18

open up the word and especially look

2:21

at those closing scenes of Jesus' life,

2:23

we ask for the infilling of your

2:25

Holy Spirit that you would open up

2:28

our minds and hearts to receive what

2:30

is in your word and that we

2:32

would receive Jesus. In the precious and

2:35

holy name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

2:37

Amen. So we're going to start with

2:39

our Sabbath lesson. This lesson focuses on

2:42

John chapter 18, but we're going to

2:44

be looking at John 18, John 19,

2:46

John 20, and even looking at a

2:48

couple other verses in first Corinthians 15

2:51

where the gospel is summarized and in

2:53

loop chapter 2 versus 34 and 35.

2:55

Our memory text is found in John

2:58

1837. It says then pilot set it

3:00

to him. Are you a king? And

3:02

Jesus answered, You say that I am

3:05

a king for this purpose I was

3:07

born and for this purpose I've come

3:09

into the world, to bear witness to

3:12

the truth. Everyone who is of the

3:14

truth listens to my voice. John 1837

3:16

in the English Standard Version. So Jesus'

3:19

crucifixion and resurrection are really the climax

3:21

of the book of John, the Gospel

3:23

of John. The first 10 chapters cover

3:26

roughly three and a half years, and

3:28

then you go to Chapter 11 all

3:30

the way through to Chapter 20, and

3:32

that covers about one to two weeks

3:35

of Christ's life. So you've got John

3:37

really emphasizing the last part of Christ's

3:39

life here in the gospel that he

3:42

has written. The first four, or excuse

3:44

me, the four Gospels present the death.

3:46

of Jesus in different ways. And through

3:49

their accounts, there's compatibility because each author

3:51

is emphasizing a key point that especially

3:53

resonates with the themes of his gospel.

3:56

The courtly goes on to say, Matthew

3:58

emphasizes the fulfillment of scripture. Mark emphasizes

4:00

the parallels between the baptism of Jesus

4:03

and the cross. And Luke focuses on

4:05

the cross as a healing salvation for

4:07

the world. For example, the thief on

4:10

the cross who found salvation in those

4:12

last moments. But John presents the cross

4:14

as an enthronement of Jesus, particularly tied

4:16

to the idea of the hour which

4:19

has come. And it's referred to many

4:21

times, numerous times throughout his book. For

4:23

example, John chapter 7, verse 30. John

4:26

chapter 8, verse 20. And John chapter

4:28

12, verse 27. My hour has not

4:30

yet come. My hour has come. This

4:33

is my hour. So the idea of

4:35

enthronement is... Really, in a sense, an

4:37

ironic picture, since crucifixion was the most

4:40

ignominious and shameful way to die that

4:42

the Romans used. So this contrast points

4:44

to this deeply ironic depiction that John

4:47

presents. Jesus is dying in shame, but

4:49

it is, at the same time, his

4:51

glorious enthronement as the Savior. That's really

4:53

amazing, isn't it? That is. truth and

4:56

it's based primarily on John chapter 18

4:58

verses 28 through 30. So we're going

5:00

to look here in John chapter 18.

5:03

We can read verses 33 through 38

5:05

and the question we want to ask

5:07

ourselves as we look at these verses

5:10

and I'm not going to read all

5:12

the verses but those are the verses

5:14

we can read is what did Pilot

5:17

and Jesus talk about? They were having

5:19

a conversation. Now Pilot was ruthless in

5:21

a sense. He didn't care about justice.

5:24

He didn't care about what was right.

5:26

At this point, what he cares about

5:28

is his sleep. He's been awakened in

5:31

the middle of the night because the

5:33

Jews want to prosecute Jesus as soon

5:35

as possible. They don't want anyone to

5:37

really know about this. This is kind

5:40

of a secret thing. And Pilots have

5:42

been awakened and he's irritated. And so

5:44

he's not really interested in getting to

5:47

the bottom of anything at this point.

5:49

wants to know what the facts are

5:51

so he can take care of the

5:54

case and get back to to sleep.

5:56

However, as he looks upon Jesus, he's

5:58

intrigued. He's taken back because Jesus to

6:01

him does not look like a criminal

6:03

and he's seen many criminals. And so

6:05

as he starts to ponder who this

6:08

man might be, he begins to ask

6:10

him questions. And one of the questions

6:12

he asked him is if he's a

6:15

king. And Pilot is also wondering if

6:17

he is a king. What is his

6:19

kingdom all about? And so Jesus responds

6:21

basically and says that His kingdom is

6:24

not of this world. And that's John

6:26

18 verse 36. So Pilot then perceptibly

6:28

perceives or deduces that Jesus is a

6:31

king, that he is saying that he

6:33

is a king. He's simply saying that

6:35

his kingdom is not of this world.

6:38

And this leads Jesus to an important

6:40

explanation that he was born to bear

6:42

witness of the truth and that every

6:45

person who is of the truth will

6:47

hear his voice. And that's John 18

6:49

verse 37. So then Pilot asked him,

6:52

what is truth? And really, friends, that's

6:54

the question that all of us need

6:56

to ask. What is truth? We don't

6:59

need to look for people's opinions or

7:01

for tradition or for what, you know,

7:03

science tells us or what the common

7:05

idea of truth is in our world

7:08

today. We really need to ask the

7:10

question, what is truth, and let God

7:12

answer that question. We need to ask

7:15

the same question that Pilot asked, but

7:17

we need to ask that question without

7:19

doing what Pilot did. And what did

7:22

he do? He asked the question, and

7:24

then he turned to all of the

7:26

people that were roused up outside and

7:29

calling for the death of Jesus, he

7:31

got distracted by the things of this

7:33

world. And friends, you don't want to

7:36

ask what truth is. and be distracted

7:38

by the things of this world. And

7:40

by the way, as soon as you

7:43

ask that question, Satan is going to

7:45

try to distract you with the things

7:47

of this world. We want to ask

7:49

that question, and then we want to

7:52

let Jesus answer the question. Pilot didn't

7:54

wait for an answer. but we God

7:56

is calling us to wait for an

7:59

answer. Don't go outside with the crowd

8:01

like Pilot did. Stay in the presence

8:03

of Christ. Truth is the theme of

8:06

John's Gospel. You know, we looked at

8:08

that as we started in John Chapter

8:10

1 a few weeks ago. that Jesus

8:13

is the light, Jesus is the truth,

8:15

that Jesus is the epitome of truth

8:17

and grace. In John Chapter 1, verse

8:20

14, he is full of grace and

8:22

truth. And of course, grace and truth

8:24

came through him, verse 17 says. In

8:27

fact, Jesus... call people to worship God

8:29

in spirit and in truth, John Chapter

8:31

4 and verses 23 and 24. And

8:33

John the Baptist even bore witness of

8:36

the truth in John 5, verse 33.

8:38

So when we're looking at the Gospel

8:40

of John, we see a lot of

8:43

emphasis on this idea. of truths and

8:45

that's what we're looking for. And truth

8:47

is found in the context of Jesus

8:50

Christ. Let's look at a few more

8:52

verses. John affirmed, excuse me, Jesus affirmed

8:54

that his father is true. John chapter

8:57

7 verse 28. Jesus said that we

8:59

can know the truth and the truth

9:01

can set us free, John 832. In

9:04

John 8, verse 40, Jesus told the

9:06

truth which he heard from his father.

9:08

In verse 44 of John 8, the

9:10

devil could not abide in the truth.

9:13

And by the way, if you want

9:15

the devil out of your life, all

9:17

you need to do, according to this

9:20

verse, is abide in the truth. Because

9:22

the devil cannot abide in the truth.

9:24

And then we have John 14, verse

9:27

6. Jesus says, I am the way

9:29

the truth and the life. And by

9:31

the way, in verse 46 of John

9:34

8, Jesus said, the truth, but people

9:36

would not believe him. A lot of

9:38

us are not ready to believe the

9:41

truth. A lot of us are not

9:43

really ready to walk in the way

9:45

of truth, which is the way of

9:48

Jesus Christ. In John chapter 14, verse

9:50

17, in John chapter 15, first 26,

9:52

Jesus promised to send us. us the

9:54

spirit of truth. So we have this

9:57

manifestation of truth in Jesus. We have

9:59

this way of truth in Jesus. And

10:01

then we have this promise that God

10:04

will send us the spirit of truth

10:06

so we can continue to walk in

10:08

the truth. And as we walk in

10:11

that truth and abiding that truth, the

10:13

devil is going to flee from us

10:15

because he can't, he cannot abide in

10:18

the truth. And then in John 1613,

10:20

Jesus promised that the spirit would guide

10:22

us into all truth. I'm so thankful

10:25

for that. promise that verse because I

10:27

know in my own experience I'm sure

10:29

in the experience of many God cannot

10:32

give us all truth at one time

10:34

It would be overwhelming for us. And

10:36

so Jesus even says in the context

10:38

of John Chapter 16, I have many

10:41

things I want to tell you, but

10:43

you can't bear them all right now.

10:45

And I'm thankful that God holds back

10:48

some of that truth and leads us

10:50

step by step and leads us step

10:52

by step. Proverbs, I believe it is,

10:55

Chapter 4 in verse 18, says, the

10:57

path of the just is a shining

10:59

light that shines more and more unto

11:02

the perfect day. So God leads a

11:04

step by step. At times, you know,

11:06

people will come and they'll do the

11:09

truth. that they have on you thinking

11:11

that you can handle everything that they've

11:13

been learning and understanding for all of

11:16

the years of their Christian experience. And

11:18

sometimes we just have to let that

11:20

go and get back to letting God

11:22

lead a step by step in the

11:25

truth. And in John 1717, Jesus says,

11:27

the word of God is truth. And

11:29

then verse 19, the last one we're

11:32

going to look at, Jesus promised to

11:34

sanctify us through the truth. So you

11:36

see this emphasis in the Gospel of

11:39

John. It's so... powerful, the emphasis is

11:41

truth. But remember, the emphasis is grace

11:43

and truth, right? Jesus is full of

11:46

grace and truth, and Jesus came to

11:48

reveal grace and truth. So when you

11:50

look at these verses that emphasize the

11:53

truth, where is the grace? Where is

11:55

the grace? Well, you'll notice that in

11:57

all of these verses, Jesus is present.

12:00

Jesus is the grace. The manifestation

12:03

of Jesus Christ is the greatest

12:05

manifestation of grace in the history

12:07

of planet Earth. The fact that

12:09

Jesus Christ came to this earth

12:12

as a man, not only to

12:14

live and to die for us,

12:16

but to show us the way

12:19

to draw us to him, that

12:21

manifestation is pure grace. And so

12:23

Jesus Christ is walking among men

12:26

and the very revelation of himself

12:28

in the contrast with our wretchedness

12:30

and sinfulness is a manifestation of

12:32

grace. And of course in that

12:35

manifestation of grace, Jesus does not...

12:37

draw back from preaching the truth,

12:39

from sharing the truth, from speaking

12:42

the truth. We see that in

12:44

the example, for example, of the

12:46

Samaritan woman. You know, he tells

12:48

her that she doesn't know what

12:51

she's worshiping. He tells her that

12:53

he's had five husbands, she's had

12:55

five husbands, and the man she's

12:58

living with now is not her

13:00

husband. But he talks to her,

13:02

a Samaritan woman. He visits her...

13:04

grace abundant and she sees it

13:07

we may not see it today

13:09

because we think well well why

13:11

wouldn't he talk to a woman

13:14

why wouldn't he ask her for

13:16

a drink why wouldn't he do

13:18

these things but when we go

13:21

back to the context of the

13:23

customs of the day we realize

13:25

this is grace Christ has smothered

13:27

this woman grace it just surrounded

13:30

her with an atmosphere of grace

13:32

and she sees that and that's

13:34

why she gets so excited when

13:37

she goes back to the Samaritan

13:39

village and she says come and

13:41

meet a man that told me

13:43

everything I did wrong. And that's

13:46

exactly what's going to happen in

13:48

your experience as you come to

13:50

Jesus Christ. He's going to surround

13:53

you with an atmosphere of grace

13:55

and then he's going to speak

13:57

into you truth. Amen. Amen. Thank

13:59

you, Pastor James. We all need

14:02

that grace. Amen. Well, my name

14:04

is John Dinssey and I have

14:06

Monday's portion of the lesson. Behold

14:09

the man. This takes us into

14:11

John Chapter 18, beginning in verse

14:13

38. this is that same scripture

14:16

let's go ahead and read the

14:18

pilot said to him what is

14:20

truth and when he had said

14:22

this he went out again to

14:25

the Jews and said to them

14:27

I find no fault in him

14:29

at all pilot did not wait

14:32

for an answer he just simply

14:34

left but notice that he brings

14:36

a message to the crowd I

14:38

find no fault in him and

14:41

then At all, it says. Now

14:43

we are dealing with the question

14:45

presented in the lesson. How did

14:48

Pilot try to persuade the people

14:50

to ask for Jesus release? And

14:52

this is one of those moments

14:55

when he did. Several times he

14:57

went out to them and said,

14:59

I find no fault at him.

15:01

And he even presented this in

15:04

verse 39, but you have a

15:06

custom that I should release someone

15:08

to you at the Passover. Do

15:11

you therefore want me to release

15:13

to you the king of the

15:15

Jews? So I find no fault

15:17

in him. Do you want me

15:20

to release him to you? You

15:22

have a custom. I'm willing to

15:24

comply and give you Jesus and

15:27

release him. Verse 40, then they

15:29

all cried again, saying, not this

15:31

man, Baba Ravis. And it's quite

15:33

interesting when you look at the

15:36

name of Barabas, I don't know

15:38

who gave him the name, sometimes

15:40

he's the father, sometimes he's the

15:43

mother, but the name means bar,

15:45

son, abbess means father. Are they

15:47

trying to say son of a

15:50

father or son of the father

15:52

in heaven? And if that was

15:54

their intention, then Barabas was not

15:56

behaving as the son of the

15:59

father, God the father. He was

16:01

a robber. He was a criminal.

16:03

And why would they want somebody

16:06

that was a robber, a thief,

16:08

a criminal to be released in

16:10

society when they could say, well,

16:12

I'm coming to your house tonight?

16:15

crowd is under some strange anger,

16:17

hatred that surely stirred by Satan

16:19

to for Jesus to be condemned

16:22

and crucified. We move now to

16:24

John chapter 19 beginning in verse

16:26

one. So then Pilot took Jesus

16:28

and scourged him. Now why would

16:31

he do this? He had just

16:33

said to them. He had just

16:35

said to them. I find no

16:38

fault in him at all. But

16:40

to comply to satisfy the crowd,

16:42

let's say he had him scourged.

16:45

And we understand that this was

16:47

a severe scourging. And studies that

16:49

have been done on this, it

16:51

says that this was a particularly

16:54

severe scourging that Jesus received because

16:56

the Romans that were doing this,

16:58

they said, this guy's a king.

17:01

And it was with some, some...

17:03

violent scourging that he received and

17:05

those whips that they used. Sometimes

17:07

they had iron little balls on

17:10

them or even bones that were

17:12

sharp and as they whipped the

17:14

back of Jesus it was the

17:17

intention to rip out flesh. So

17:19

this left Jesus weakened and bleeding

17:21

and notice now what happens. And

17:25

the soldiers twisted a crown of

17:27

thorns and put it on his

17:29

head and they put on him

17:32

a purple rope. Then they said,

17:34

Hail, king of the Jews. And

17:36

they struck him with their hands.

17:39

Pilot then went out again and

17:41

said to them, behold, I am

17:43

bringing him out to you that

17:45

you may know that I find

17:48

no fault in him. Again. I

17:50

find no fault in him. Then

17:52

Jesus came out wearing the crown

17:55

of thorns and the purple robe

17:57

and Pilots said to them, Behold

17:59

the man. This is the man.

18:02

And Jesus is bleeding from his

18:04

forehead. He is weakened. But yet,

18:06

there is, you know, it's interesting,

18:08

in the book, Desire of Ages,

18:11

it says that Jesus had this

18:13

kingly dignity, that even though the

18:15

Bible says that He has no

18:18

form or cominess that we should

18:20

desire him. He looks like basically

18:22

like anyone else, but the way

18:25

Jesus carried himself, even the little

18:27

children were attracted to him because

18:29

of that peace in his face,

18:32

that Serenity. And in that sense,

18:34

he was someone to, you want

18:36

to be near. And besides that,

18:38

he spoke words of life. But

18:41

here he is, and it's interesting.

18:43

that they put a crown of

18:45

thorns. And when you look at

18:48

thorns, where did they come from?

18:50

Thorns were not part of the

18:52

original creation. They came in after

18:55

sin. The Lord allowed this to

18:57

happen. But it is very interesting

18:59

what we find in the youth

19:02

instructor in article February 8, 1900.

19:04

And I read to you from

19:06

there. Notice what it says here.

19:08

Satan led the cruel mob in

19:11

their abuse of the Savior. It

19:13

was his purpose to provoke him

19:15

to retaliation if possible or to

19:18

drive him to perform a miracle

19:20

to release himself and thus break

19:22

up the plan of salvation. One

19:25

stain upon his human life, one

19:27

failure of his humanity to bear

19:29

the terrible test and the lamb

19:32

of God would have been an

19:34

imperfect offering and the redemption of

19:36

man a failure. But he who

19:38

by a command could bring the

19:41

heavenly host to his aid, he

19:43

who could have driven them up

19:45

in terror from his side by

19:48

one look of divinity submitted to

19:50

the coarse's insult and outrage with

19:52

dignified composure. Now notice, the crown

19:55

of thorns encircling his brow was

19:57

the symbol of his anointing as

19:59

the great high priest. Wow, that's

20:01

impressive. That is inspiring. Moving to

20:04

John chapter 19 verse 6, therefore,

20:06

when the chief priest and officer

20:08

saw him, they cried out saying,

20:11

crucify him, crucify him. Who are

20:13

these people that are crying this?

20:15

These are the leaders of the

20:18

people out there. trying to stir

20:20

the mob to all chant, crucify

20:22

him, crucify him. Vila said to

20:25

them, you take him and crucify

20:27

him, for I find no fault

20:29

in him. Again, resenting to them.

20:31

And this was a message to

20:34

their conscience. Why? He's done nothing

20:36

wrong. And when you think about

20:38

Jesus, who went about doing good,

20:41

bringing sight to the blind, healing

20:43

paralytic people, and even raising the

20:45

dead, why would you want to

20:48

get rid of somebody like that?

20:50

But here they are, moved by

20:52

passion and hatred. We don't know

20:55

fully what was in their mind,

20:57

but they wanted Jesus not only

20:59

out of the way, but... to

21:01

be killed. So we continue reading.

21:04

We need to because of time.

21:06

Move quickly here. Let's go to

21:08

verse 10, John 1910. Then Pyla

21:11

said to him, are you not

21:13

speaking to me? This is when

21:15

he asked Jesus, where are you

21:18

from? And Jesus gave me, are

21:20

you not speaking to me? Do

21:22

you not know that I have

21:25

power to crucify you and power

21:27

to release you? Basically, he says,

21:29

my life, your life is in

21:31

my hands. If you don't. Work

21:34

with me. I can either have

21:36

you killed or I can have

21:38

you released your life is in

21:41

my hands Now this is something

21:43

interesting and this is when Jesus

21:45

responds verse 11 Jesus answered you

21:48

Could have no power at all

21:50

against me unless it had been

21:52

given you from above Therefore, the

21:54

one who delivered me to you

21:57

has the greater sin. This was

21:59

a message for Pilot. The one

22:01

who delivered me to you has

22:04

the greater sin. Pilot was not

22:06

excused. He had guilt as well

22:08

because it was in his hands

22:11

to release him or his hands

22:13

to crucify him. And we have

22:15

to understand that... God considers some

22:18

sins greater than others and here's

22:20

one where now notice when the

22:22

one who delivered him to him

22:24

was essentially the high priest and

22:27

the high priest had greater guilt

22:29

but why why because of his

22:31

position because he had evidence of

22:34

the divinity of Jesus he had

22:36

heard of miracles he had greater

22:38

responsibility for his actions let's move

22:41

to John 1912. From then on

22:43

Pilot sought to release him, but

22:45

the Jews cried out saying, if

22:48

you let this man go, you

22:50

are not Caesar's friend. Whoever makes

22:52

himself a king speaks against Caesar.

22:54

So over and over again, we

22:57

see Pilot struggling. I gotta release

22:59

this man, but I gotta please

23:01

the crowd. It was a great...

23:04

great struggle. Unfortunately, unfortunately, we have

23:06

to read these last verses here,

23:08

when Pilot therefore heard that saying

23:11

he brought Jesus out and sat

23:13

down in the judgment seat in

23:15

a place that is called pray,

23:18

the pavement, but in Hebrew gabata,

23:20

now it was the preparation day

23:22

of the Passover in about the

23:24

sixth hour, he said to the

23:27

Jews, now he says, he went

23:29

from, behold the man, behold your

23:31

king. Behold your king. This is

23:34

the. king of the Jews, but

23:36

they cried out away with him,

23:38

away with him, crucify him. Pilots

23:41

said to them, shall I crucify

23:43

your king? And they said we

23:45

have no king, but Caesar. What

23:47

choice will you make? Would Jesus

23:50

be your king? Or would the

23:52

world be your king? Choose Jesus.

23:54

Amen. That's quite a solemn appeal.

23:57

And we want to remember that

23:59

when we look at these last

24:01

scenes of Jesus Christ, he is

24:04

appealing to each one of us.

24:06

Don't go away. We're going to

24:08

have a mission moment and we'll

24:11

be right back. Hello, I'm Greg

24:13

Morakoni. I'm so glad you joined

24:15

me for today's three A.B.N. Mission

24:17

moment. Pauletta raised her sons to

24:20

love the Lord. And when they

24:22

got older, they both joined the

24:24

Baptist church. Yet, sadly, when he

24:27

was just 18 years old, her

24:29

oldest son was killed in a

24:31

very tragic drive-by shooting. Her only

24:34

relief seemed to come by singing

24:36

in church. Praising God healed her

24:38

mind and lessened her grief as

24:41

she focused on raising her youngest

24:43

son. After attending college, he joined

24:45

the Navy and was sent overseas

24:47

during Operation Desert Storm. He returned,

24:50

started a family, and later served

24:52

in Iraq, but eventually coming home

24:54

with post-traumatic stress disorder. Pauletta felt

24:57

reassured that her son was getting

24:59

counseling, taking medication and seemed to

25:01

be doing very well. Well, one

25:04

horrible day, she returned from the

25:06

gym and saw two voicemails. The

25:08

first was from her son saying,

25:10

Mom, I tried to be a

25:13

good father and a good son.

25:15

May the Lord rest my soul?

25:17

She called back immediately, but there

25:20

was no answer. So she played

25:22

the other message from a policeman

25:24

saying they'd found her son in

25:27

a cemetery next to his brother's

25:29

grave. her heart was broken. She

25:31

couldn't understand why he'd taken his

25:34

own life, how she wished he

25:36

had told her, but maybe he

25:38

couldn't. Her pain was just too

25:40

great to bear. Did Pauletta find

25:43

hope and healing? How did 3A-B-N

25:45

help her in this time of

25:47

need? Join us for our next

25:50

3A-B-N mission moment. Welcome back, friends.

25:52

We're going to continue our study

25:54

with Tuesday's lesson with Tuesday's. is

25:57

finished. I'm Shelley Quinn. I want

25:59

to begin with a statement from

26:01

the quarterly. It says, as John

26:04

19, 17 through 12, 22 shows.

26:06

Pilot wrote an inscription in Latin,

26:08

Greek, and Hebrew that said Jesus

26:10

of Nazareth, the king of the

26:13

Jews, he actually nailed that to

26:15

the cross. The religious leaders wanted

26:17

it changed, but Pilot would have

26:20

none of it, and the inscription

26:22

remained a mute witness to the

26:24

truth about Jesus, and one of

26:27

the markers, that Jesus is enthroned

26:29

on the cross as the king.

26:31

Here was Jesus, truly their king.

26:34

the king of the Jews hanging

26:36

on the cross like a common

26:38

criminal. So let's begin with John

26:40

19. We're going to just go

26:43

through some of these scriptures. They're

26:45

so important. more important than anything

26:47

I could say. John 19, 25

26:50

through 27, we see his mother

26:52

marry at the cross with some

26:54

others and it says, now they

26:57

stood by the cross of Jesus,

26:59

his mother, his mother's sister, Mary

27:01

the wife of Clopis, and Mary

27:03

Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his

27:06

mother and the disciple whom he

27:08

loved standing by, he said to

27:10

his mother, woman, behold your son.

27:13

Woman was a term of respect

27:15

in that day and age. Then

27:17

he said to his disciple, behold

27:20

your mother. And from that hour,

27:22

that disciple took her to his

27:24

own home. John's actually talking about

27:27

himself here. So Jesus wanted to

27:29

ensure, you know, Jesus' brothers did

27:31

not believe in his ministry. And

27:33

as her first born son, he

27:36

wanted to make sure she was

27:38

going to be well taken care

27:40

of. And He does take care

27:43

of her. Now, John 1928, let's

27:45

continue. Here's, here's, we're gonna read

27:47

28 through 30. This is what

27:50

the lesson's all about. After this,

27:52

Jesus knowing that all things were

27:54

accomplished. that the scripture might be

27:57

fulfilled, said, I thirst. Now a

27:59

vessel of sour wine was sitting

28:01

there, and they filled a sponge

28:03

with sour wine, put it on

28:06

his sip and put it to

28:08

his mouth. So when Jesus had

28:10

received the sour wine, he said,

28:13

it is finished. And bowing his

28:15

head, he gave up his spirits.

28:17

The term it is finished is

28:20

a single word in the Greek

28:22

and it means to carry it

28:24

out to completion Well to complete

28:27

interestingly verse 28 when he said

28:29

all things were accomplished. It's the

28:31

same word as it is finished

28:33

in verse 30 as it is

28:36

finished So we know from Philippians

28:38

The second person of the God

28:40

had humiliated himself. He was the

28:43

Messiah predicted all through the Old

28:45

Testament. He was the Christ. Those

28:47

are his titles. But he humiliated

28:50

himself to come down and take

28:52

on our flesh, humbling himself that

28:54

he could die as our substitute

28:56

and pay the penalty for our

28:59

sin on the cross, that he

29:01

could satisfy his own justice. The

29:03

single word, this is so amazing,

29:06

in the papira, the single word

29:08

that is translated accomplished, it is

29:10

finished, is found stamped on tax

29:13

receipts, meaning paid in full. So

29:15

Jesus was crying out on the

29:17

cross. I've accomplished it. I've paid

29:20

in full the only sacrifice that

29:22

is needed for all of many

29:24

times. Since, you know, Jesus had

29:26

said in John 1227, my soul

29:29

is troubled. What shall I say?

29:31

Father saved me from this hour.

29:33

No, but for this purpose, I

29:36

came to this hour. when he

29:38

said it is finished, he had

29:40

completed his mission, what the mission

29:43

the father gave him to do

29:45

on earth. In Revelation 13.8, it

29:47

says he was the lamb slain

29:50

from the foundation of the world.

29:52

The innocence and the purity of

29:54

the spotless lamb of God was

29:56

violated. on the cross. He was

29:59

way down, he who knew no

30:01

sin, was way down with the

30:03

sins of the world. He was

30:06

crushed by that. Why? We talk

30:08

about this often. The whole goal

30:10

of the everlasting covenant is the

30:13

great exchange we see in second

30:15

Corinthians, 521, that God made him

30:17

who knew no Why, that we

30:20

might become the righteousness of God

30:22

in Christ Jesus? So he was

30:24

shedding the blood of the everlasting

30:26

covenant. We see that in Hebrews

30:29

1320 and 21. Now may the

30:31

God of peace who brought up

30:33

our Lord Jesus from the dead,

30:36

that great shepherd of the sheep,

30:38

through the blood of the everlasting

30:40

covenant. May he make you complete.

30:43

in every good work to do

30:45

his will. See, when you come

30:47

to God and you receive the

30:49

indwelling Holy Spirit, Christ dwells in

30:52

your heart through faith is what

30:54

Ephesians 316 through 18 says. And

30:56

you know what? God... works in

30:59

you to willing to do his

31:01

good pleasure to complete every good

31:03

work to do his will working

31:06

in you what is well pleasing

31:08

in his sight through Jesus Christ

31:10

to whom be glory forever and

31:13

ever. Payment in full was made.

31:15

It's a once and for all

31:17

payment. Listen to, Hebrews 9-12 says,

31:19

not with the blood of goats

31:22

and calves, but with his own

31:24

blood. He entered the most holy

31:26

place once for all, having obtained

31:29

eternal redemption. He repeats this in

31:31

the Hebrews 10-12. This man after

31:33

he had... offered one sacrifice forever,

31:36

sat down at the right end

31:38

of God. The mission of the

31:40

person of Jesus Christ, this covenant,

31:43

Son of God, God sent him

31:45

into the world to die. as

31:47

our substitutionary sacrifice to atone for

31:49

our sin, offer us righteousness by

31:52

faith, and eternal life as we

31:54

live in union with him. We

31:56

enter into God's covenant and then

31:59

we have to abide in His

32:01

grace. Romans 323 and 24 says,

32:03

all have sin involved short of

32:06

the glory of God. Being justified

32:08

freely. by his grace through the

32:10

redemption. That is in Christ Jesus.

32:13

And I know I've said this

32:15

before, but we can't read it

32:17

often enough. First Peter, 118 through

32:19

21, when Jesus cried out, it

32:22

is finished. It is paid in

32:24

full. Here's what Peter has to

32:26

say, first Peter 118. Know that

32:29

you were not redeemed with corruptible

32:31

things like silver or gold from

32:33

your aimless conduct received by tradition

32:36

of your fathers. But with the

32:38

precious blood of Christ, as a

32:40

lamb, without blemish and without spot,

32:42

he indeed was foreordained before the

32:45

foundation of the world. Paul says,

32:47

God gave us grace before the

32:49

foundation of the world, but was

32:52

manifest in these last times for

32:54

you, who through him believe in

32:56

God, who raised him from the

32:59

dead and gave him glory, so

33:01

that your faith... and your hope

33:03

are in God. His earthly ministry

33:06

was finished. Remember, it is finished,

33:08

a single word in Greek. It

33:10

means, it's translated as accomplished. In

33:12

the Paparai, we see it's translated,

33:15

paid in full. That single word,

33:17

it is finished. It does not

33:19

mean that Christ's ministry. was finished.

33:22

His ministry on earth, his mission

33:24

on earth was finished, but he

33:26

is now seated on the heavenly

33:29

throne and his ministry continues as

33:31

high priest, Hebrews, 15 and 16,

33:33

says, we do not have a

33:36

high priest who cannot sympathize with

33:38

our weaknesses, but was in all

33:40

points tempted as we are yet

33:42

without sin. Let us therefore come

33:45

boldly with confidence. to his throne

33:47

of grace that we might obtain

33:49

mercy and find grace to help

33:52

in our time of need because

33:54

Hebrew 725 says that as our

33:56

high priest Jesus intercedes for us

33:59

in heaven that's what he's doing

34:01

now he's praying he's interceding for

34:03

you and it goes on to

34:06

say he is able to save

34:08

to the uttermost. When it's in

34:10

his hands, it is finished. Amen.

34:12

Amen. That was a powerful lesson.

34:15

Thank you, Shelley. have Wednesday's lesson.

34:17

I'm Daniel Perrin. Wednesday's lesson is

34:19

called The Empty Too. Now the

34:22

lesson authors had a purpose in

34:24

using this title, the Empty Too,

34:26

rather than calling it the glorious

34:29

resurrection or the risen Savior or

34:31

something like that. And I'll show

34:33

you why. John Chapter 19 ends,

34:35

verse 40 to the end. Ends

34:38

like this. On a somber note,

34:40

and it sounds kind of resigned,

34:42

then they took the body of

34:45

Jesus, bounded in strips of linen

34:47

with the spices as the custom

34:49

of the Jews is to bury.

34:52

Now in the place where he

34:54

was crucified, there was a garden,

34:56

and in the garden, a new

34:59

tomb in which no one had

35:01

yet been laid. So there they

35:03

laid Jesus, because of the Jews'

35:05

preparation day, for the tomb was

35:08

nearby. A somber, resigned sort of

35:10

tone here. Now they haven't given

35:12

up on God, they're still honoring

35:15

his Sabbath his Sabbath his Sabbath

35:17

day. It's late Friday and they

35:19

don't have time for the proper

35:22

actions to take to show to

35:24

someone that you love and respect.

35:26

Now the world's expectation of how

35:29

this story ought to continue would

35:31

read something like this. They buried

35:33

their friend, they rested because they

35:35

were physically and emotionally exhausted, and

35:38

then on the first day of

35:40

the week they came back and

35:42

took the proper actions to show

35:45

their respect. And instead, in chapter

35:47

20, the first two verses describe

35:49

Mary Magdalene, who's the first one,

35:52

eager, as soon as the sun

35:54

is up, and she can get

35:56

there, she's coming to the tomb,

35:59

again, to visit the tomb. And

36:01

from a distance, she sees that

36:03

the stone covering the entrance of

36:05

the tomb has been, the word

36:08

there describes it being picked up

36:10

and carried away. It has been

36:12

not just moved, it has been

36:15

thrown aside. Nothing about this stone

36:17

being moved though causes her to

36:19

think he's alive. That's not what

36:22

comes to her mind. She's overwhelmed

36:24

with emotion. She doesn't even pause

36:26

to think and everything about it

36:28

says they vandalized, they ransacked, they

36:31

desecrated, they took the body and

36:33

now her grief has been com-

36:35

pounded and it's even more indescribable

36:38

than it was before. Through inspiration,

36:40

John carefully chooses which details he's

36:42

going to give to us as

36:45

evidence. And so responding to Mary's

36:47

report in verses three and four,

36:49

Peter and John set out running

36:52

to the tomb to see this

36:54

awful thing that Mary has just

36:56

told them that happened. The stone

36:58

has been taken away, his body

37:01

is gone. They see the same

37:03

stone lifted up and carried away

37:05

which they expected because of Mary's

37:08

report. John now is the first

37:10

one who gets to the door

37:12

of the tomb and he stops.

37:15

verse five says, he stooping down

37:17

and looking in saw the linen

37:19

cloths lying there, yet he didn't

37:22

go in. He doesn't want to

37:24

see, he doesn't want to go

37:26

any farther, he sees that and

37:28

that's enough. Peter then runs past

37:31

him and he looks and he

37:33

sees it all. inside, verse six

37:35

and seven. Then he saw the

37:38

linen cloths lying there, and the

37:40

handkerchief that had been wrapped around

37:42

his head, that this is something

37:45

separate from those closet bound his

37:47

body, it was just around the

37:49

head, not lying with the linen

37:52

cloths, but folded together or rolled

37:54

together in a place by themselves,

37:56

separate. I want you to notice

37:58

that at first, the empty tomb

38:01

is not convincing to them. It's

38:03

confusing. It doesn't make sense, it's

38:05

not what they were expecting to

38:08

see. They did not know that

38:10

this empty tomb meant that Jesus

38:12

had been raised. And John admits

38:15

this when we get to verse

38:17

9, where he says, for as

38:19

yet they did not know the

38:21

scripture, that he must rise again

38:24

from the dead. And he's referring

38:26

to the scripture, at least specifically

38:28

in Psalm 16, verse 10, which

38:31

says, for you will not leave

38:33

my body in Sha'ole, in the

38:35

grave. Nor will you allow your

38:38

holy one to seek. corruption or

38:40

decay. According to John's testimony, they

38:42

didn't see this coming. They did

38:45

not expect a resurrection. they saw

38:47

said to them, something has gone

38:49

wrong. This is not what we

38:51

expected to see. The lesson here

38:54

for us is that not everybody

38:56

believes immediately or as immediately as

38:58

we would expect that they should

39:01

believe. Sometimes from our position of

39:03

great knowledge of the Bible, we

39:05

might look at others and say,

39:08

it's so obvious. Can't you understand

39:10

it? It makes perfect sense to

39:12

me. And so we might say

39:15

this of the disciples, how could

39:17

they not have known? Don't they

39:19

remember Jesus told them? Didn't they

39:21

know it was all prophesied in

39:24

the Old Testament? The evidence is

39:26

not at fault, but their faulty

39:28

expectations were at fault here. Sometimes

39:31

there are people who can't see

39:33

all the evidence. Like John, who

39:35

doesn't quite go all the way

39:38

in yet, he doesn't see it

39:40

all, but he sees something. And

39:42

even like Peter, there are those

39:45

who see the evidence, but their

39:47

preconceived notions in their history and

39:49

the things that they've heard and

39:51

expected haven't yet come into line

39:54

with what they see, what God

39:56

is presenting to them, and so

39:58

their preconceived ideas make it harder

40:01

for them to believe. And so

40:03

we have to be gentle with

40:05

those who are coming into contact

40:08

with new Bible truth. That they

40:10

have never seen, they didn't see

40:12

it coming, and sometimes it's hard

40:14

to let go of those former

40:17

ideas. I think we have... all

40:19

been there at one point or

40:21

another. We're going to be. God

40:24

has things to show us that

40:26

we wouldn't expect. So finally we

40:28

get here to verse eight that

40:31

says, then the other disciple, this

40:33

is John, who came to the

40:35

tomb first, went in also, and

40:38

he saw and believed. John doesn't

40:40

specifically say exactly why they believe

40:42

but they saw the grave clothes

40:44

there I know there are different

40:47

theories as to what what those

40:49

grave clothes what was going on

40:51

with them but we know this

40:54

Jesus left those grave clothes there

40:56

he arranged them there specifically and

40:58

intentionally on purpose and we see

41:01

some progressing levels of investigation. They

41:03

see the stone moved. But that

41:05

doesn't change their expectation. They come

41:08

a little closer, they look in

41:10

the doorway, and they still have

41:12

some unanswered questions, and then they

41:14

enter the room, and they examine,

41:17

and they think about, and they

41:19

contemplate, what does this mean? And

41:21

the more they think about it,

41:24

God brings onto their understanding what

41:26

this totally means for them. They

41:28

look closely, they see, they think,

41:31

they ask, they wonder. And they

41:33

begin to realize no grave robber

41:35

looking for treasure is going to

41:38

come in here and take a

41:40

body, a filthy body covered in

41:42

blood, going to take that away

41:44

and then arrange the grave clothes

41:47

neatly there and pull the body

41:49

away. Though they've taken no treasure

41:51

out of the tomb, that just

41:54

doesn't make sense at all. So

41:56

let me address please those of

41:58

you who are watching right now,

42:01

and maybe you've come across 3abN

42:03

recently Maybe you've stumbled upon it.

42:05

Maybe somebody has recommended this network

42:07

to you said you got to

42:10

go watch what's here And as

42:12

you've been watching over the past

42:14

days or weeks or months You've

42:17

come across some information and statements

42:19

about the Bible that are new

42:21

to you that you haven't heard

42:24

before And you hear people talking

42:26

about the fact that God does

42:28

not torture sinners for eternity. And

42:31

that's something new. And you're not

42:33

quite sure how to make that

42:35

fit with sermons you've heard in

42:37

the past or things that you've

42:40

heard from your grandmother or somebody

42:42

else who's been meaningful and important

42:44

in your life. Or maybe you

42:47

hear somebody talking about the nature

42:49

of God's law, that it was

42:51

not done away with, that God's

42:54

law reflects who he is, his

42:56

character, of love for you, and

42:58

his law doesn't change, like he

43:01

doesn't change. And something about you

43:03

says, that sounds like what God

43:05

is like, but that's not what

43:07

I've heard. Or maybe you're hearing

43:10

something about the Seventh Day Sabbath.

43:12

Like the Seventh Day Sabbath, that's,

43:14

I know that's in the Bible,

43:17

but that was for other people,

43:19

I've heard, I've been told, I've

43:21

been told, that it's changed and

43:24

you're wondering what to do with

43:26

these new ideas that are coming

43:28

at you. I encourage you, like

43:31

Peter and like John, to come

43:33

in and investigate the evidence that

43:35

God has left behind for you.

43:37

Don't run away from unexpected information

43:40

from the word of God. This

43:42

is called the empty tomb because

43:44

sometimes we're presented with information that

43:47

doesn't make sense with us. They

43:49

didn't see the risen Savior at

43:51

first. They saw something that was

43:54

confusing. Reach out to the pastoral

43:56

department here. If you have questions,

43:58

give us a call and say

44:00

I'm not sure how to make

44:03

sense of this and let us

44:05

direct you to some Bible texts

44:07

and statements that would help bring

44:10

it to light in your mind.

44:12

What comes from examining God's word

44:14

with good intentions is going to

44:17

be a deeper understanding of God's

44:19

word and a deeper experience of

44:21

God. And there's a set of

44:24

Bible studies here at 3abN that

44:26

walk you through these topics, all

44:28

from God's word, not from man's

44:30

opinions, to say, Lord, what is

44:33

your evidence lead me to believe?

44:35

If Peter and John had only

44:37

looked from a distance, their opinion

44:40

about the empty tomb would not

44:42

have changed to belief that day.

44:44

Of course, they would have seen

44:47

Jesus later alive, but he was

44:49

giving them an opportunity to exercise

44:51

and strengthen their faith. And as

44:54

we exercise faith, it grows as

44:56

we cherish it. God strengthens that

44:58

within us. Before they even see

45:00

Jesus alive, they believe. The whole

45:03

gospel of John is about looking

45:05

at the evidence that God has

45:07

left for us, and he's left

45:10

plenty of evidence from Genesis through

45:12

to revelation, interpreted through the Holy

45:14

Spirit who inspired these words, and

45:17

all of that evidence given there,

45:19

John tells us at the end

45:21

of this chapter, chapter 20, is

45:24

there so that you may believe,

45:26

and that by believing you may

45:28

have life in his name. I

45:30

challenge you, check out the evidence,

45:33

don't turn away from it. Amen.

45:35

Thank you so much, Daniel. What

45:37

an incredible study. We often focus

45:40

on who saw Jesus first and

45:42

that process of experiencing Jesus alive

45:44

after the resurrection, but we don't

45:47

focus on that empty tomb. I

45:49

love that. And Shelley and Pastor

45:51

Johnny and Pastor James, what a

45:53

great study. I love looking at

45:56

these closing moments as it were

45:58

of Jesus' life, his death on

46:00

the cross for you and for

46:03

me, and then he is alive,

46:05

the evidence for him being alive.

46:07

I'm Jill Morakoni. Thursday we look

46:10

at Jesus and Mary and this

46:12

is the first physical appearance of

46:14

Jesus to a person here on

46:17

earth now. Peter and John had

46:19

examined the evidence and looked at

46:21

the empty tomb, but Jesus first

46:23

appeared to Mary. We're going to

46:26

have seven takeaways of love in

46:28

pain and we're in John chapter

46:30

20. Before we do that if

46:33

you look at the chronology I

46:35

love looking at the different Gospels

46:37

together and as you look at

46:40

that you see the chronology Jesus

46:42

first appears to marry. Then next,

46:44

to the two disciples on the

46:47

way to Emmaus, we see this

46:49

in Luke chapter 24, this is

46:51

still resurrection day, this is still

46:53

Sunday. He also appears at some

46:56

point to Simon Peter. Now we

46:58

don't know exactly when that occurs,

47:00

but we know when the two

47:03

disciples come back from Emmaus, run

47:05

back to Jerusalem, and they tell

47:07

the other disciples, hey, we saw

47:10

Jesus, and the other disciples say,

47:12

oh, Jesus appeared to Simon Peter.

47:14

Then that... evening, this is still

47:17

the resurrection day, that evening, Jesus

47:19

appears to his disciples, but Thomas

47:21

is missing. Eight days later, a

47:23

following week, Jesus appears to the

47:26

disciples again, and Thomas is present.

47:28

And then several days after that,

47:30

we have the John 21 experience,

47:33

which is the third appearance of

47:35

Jesus to his disciples in mass,

47:37

you could say, as a group.

47:40

and this is by the Sea

47:42

of Galilee, we'll be studying that

47:44

next week's lesson. And then of

47:46

course, 500 believers at once as

47:49

well, and we have that ascension

47:51

of Jesus in Acts chapter one.

47:53

But let's look at Mary being

47:56

the first to actually see Jesus

47:58

physically. We're in John 20, verse

48:00

11. Mary stood outside by the

48:03

tomb. And as she wept, she

48:05

stooped down and looked into the

48:07

tomb. Now Daniel already read how

48:10

Mary had been first at the

48:12

tomb, and then she runs and

48:14

she, but she didn't go in.

48:16

She runs and she tells the

48:19

disciples, Peter and John Combs, they

48:21

looked, they examined the evidence. So

48:23

Mary probably hung around at the

48:26

tomb. She's probably still there in

48:28

that vicinity. And she said, takeaway

48:30

number one. Love turns to the

48:33

last place you saw Jesus. You

48:35

see, even in pain, turn to

48:37

the last place where you experienced

48:40

and where you found Jesus. She's

48:42

hurting, she's missing Jesus. Where was

48:44

the last place she saw him?

48:46

He was laid in the tomb.

48:49

Where did you see Jesus last?

48:51

Are you going through a difficult

48:53

time? Are you crying as Mary

48:56

was? Is your hopes dashed? Where

48:58

did you see him last? Maybe

49:00

it was in the word of

49:03

God and there was a certain

49:05

scripture that God used to speak

49:07

into your life. Maybe it was

49:09

in a time of prayer you

49:12

outside in nature and God spoke

49:14

to you through that. Maybe there

49:16

was a miracle God did in

49:19

your life in the past. You

49:21

can cling to that. Go to

49:23

that place where you... last experienced

49:26

Jesus. Keep reading verse 12. And

49:28

she saw two angels in white,

49:30

so she looks in the tomb.

49:33

She sees two angels in white

49:35

sitting, one at the head, the

49:37

other at the feet, where the

49:39

body of Jesus had lain. Then

49:42

they, this is the angels, said

49:44

to her, woman, why are you

49:46

weeping? Take away number Love invites

49:49

us to articulate our pain. Sometimes

49:51

I think when other people are

49:53

in pain we turn away from

49:56

them. Pain is hard to know

49:58

what to say, hard to know

50:00

what to do, hard to know

50:03

what to do, hard to know

50:05

how to handle that, and we

50:07

turn away. But God doesn't turn

50:09

away when we're in pain. He

50:12

turns toward us. Love invites us

50:14

to articulate our pain. Keep reading.

50:16

How does she answer the question?

50:19

She says to them we're in

50:21

verse 13 because they've taken away

50:23

my lord and I don't know

50:26

where they have laid him She

50:28

still thinks he's dead. She still

50:30

thinks maybe grave robbers or somebody

50:33

came and took away her Savior

50:35

verse 14 When she said this

50:37

she turned around and saw Jesus

50:39

standing there But she did not

50:42

know that it was Jesus now

50:44

was he the same Jesus she

50:46

had seen before yes Was he

50:49

bearing the marks of the crucifixion?

50:51

Yes. Mary was looking for a

50:53

dead body, not a living person.

50:56

In her mind, he's dead. She

50:58

can't even comprehend the fact. She

51:00

wasn't even thinking that he could

51:02

be alive. The evidence, as it

51:05

were, was right in front of

51:07

her. Jesus is standing right in

51:09

front of her. But she does

51:12

not see. She does not recognize.

51:14

She does not know. Take away

51:16

three love discerns the truth you

51:19

see loss blinded her to the

51:21

truth did it not in her

51:23

focus even when Jesus was in

51:26

front of her she could not

51:28

see him you know sometimes we're

51:30

so blinded by whatever we're going

51:32

through whatever pain we're in Jesus

51:35

can be right in front of

51:37

us Right beside us and we

51:39

don't even see him. We don't

51:42

even recognize him He's right there

51:44

and we say where are you

51:46

and he says I'm a touch

51:49

away But we cannot sense that

51:51

it takes love to discern the

51:53

truth Keep reading verse 15.

51:56

Jesus said to

51:58

her, to her, are

52:00

you weeping? you Whom

52:02

are you seeking?

52:05

seeking? She's opposing to

52:07

be the be the garder.

52:10

said to him, sir, if if you've carried

52:12

him away, tell me where you

52:14

laid him him. I will take

52:16

him away. All this time this thinking,

52:18

thinking. this is the the She doesn't

52:20

know she's talking to Jesus. She

52:22

doesn't know in her pain, she's

52:24

doing that. know in her four, she's doing that.

52:26

the deeper question. deeper I love,

52:28

love looks beneath the surface to

52:30

what is really happening, where we

52:32

need to place our hope. I

52:34

love what Jesus says, why are

52:36

you weeping? And then he just

52:38

keeps going. Why are are you weeping? the

52:40

point of the he just are you

52:42

seeking? Asking the deeper question. the

52:44

16, Jesus said to her, said

52:47

to her, Mary. I I would love

52:49

to have been there. there. I would

52:51

have loved to actually hear the

52:53

way hear the said her name. However,

52:55

he said it, she

52:57

recognized instantly. is This is

52:59

Jesus. She turned and said to

53:01

him, which is to say

53:03

say take away away five. Love Love

53:05

recognizes the voice. voice. Greg You know,

53:08

when Greg and I are

53:10

maybe in a crowded room, maybe

53:12

at an airport. Or

53:14

or in a big church, I I

53:16

can hear his voice. It doesn't matter

53:18

how many people are talking and

53:20

how much commotion and noise goes on

53:22

around, and I hear his voice, I

53:24

recognize his voice. Why? Because

53:26

I know his voice, because

53:28

I've spent years with him, because

53:30

I love him. him. Love recognizes

53:33

the master's voice. the John 10,

53:35

verse John 10 verse 4. Speaking, when he, Jesus,

53:37

Jesus, brings out his own sheep,

53:39

he goes before them and

53:41

the sheep follow him. the sheep follow him,

53:43

why? For they know His voice. you know you

53:45

know the voice of Jesus? can

53:47

You can only know and recognize

53:49

the voice of Jesus if you've

53:51

spent time with Him, If if you've

53:54

experienced Him, if you've heard His

53:56

voice before, Mary had heard His

53:58

voice, Mary knew His voice. And

54:00

when he said Mary, she knew instantly

54:02

it was Jesus. Verse 17, Jesus said

54:04

to her, do not cling to me.

54:06

King James says, touch me not. For

54:08

I have not yet ascended to my

54:10

father, but go to my brethren and

54:12

say to them, I am ascending to

54:14

my father and your father, into my

54:16

God and your God. Now this would

54:18

be what we would call a private

54:20

ascension. It's not the ascension in Acts

54:22

chapter one, where the disciples were there

54:24

and they witnessed Jesus going up into

54:26

heaven. This is Jesus needed to go

54:28

home to receive assurance from his father

54:31

that the sacrifice was Accepted the atonement

54:33

was enough through the blood of Jesus

54:35

all could be saved But what I

54:37

want to focus on is Jesus telling

54:39

Mary go tell my Brethren Now Mary

54:41

was to be the first witness to

54:43

go and tell the other disciples. Take

54:45

away number six. Love enables the sinner

54:47

to become the witness. I loved that.

54:49

Mary had lived in sin. Mary had

54:51

walked in sin. Jesus had delivered her.

54:53

Jesus had sanctified her and she who

54:55

was a fallen woman. She who was

54:57

a sinner. became the first witness of

54:59

Jesus as the Messiah and the resurrected

55:01

Lord. I think of the demoniacs. What

55:03

happened to them? They were sinners and

55:05

as soon as they were delivered they

55:07

became the witness. You see love enables

55:09

the sinner to become the witness. Finally

55:11

verse 18. Mary Magdalene came and she

55:14

told the disciples she had seen the

55:16

Lord and that he had spoken these

55:18

things to her. Takeaway number seven. Love

55:20

walks in obedience. She could have said,

55:22

I'm afraid to share, I'm just a

55:24

woman. Are they going to believe me?

55:26

Why am I the one who's supposed

55:28

to testify? She walked in obedience. Jesus

55:30

said, go in. tell that I am

55:32

resurrected and she walked in obedience because

55:34

love walks in obedience. Love that. Fantastic.

55:36

Praise God. What a powerful message God

55:38

has forced in his word. I love

55:40

the way each one of us brought

55:42

out a little aspect of this glorious

55:44

truth of the hour of God's glory,

55:46

the cross and the resurrection. We've got

55:48

just a couple minutes for some closing

55:50

thoughts. Let's start with Pastor John Dinsie.

55:52

Thank you. You know in the book

55:54

of John, we have... the words behold

55:57

the lamb I invite you to behold

55:59

the lamb and we have the words

56:01

behold the man Jesus Christ dying for

56:03

you but we also have behold the

56:05

king I invite you to behold Jesus

56:07

at the land the man the king

56:09

and also your high priest amen There

56:11

is a single word in the Greek

56:13

in Mark 1928. It is translated accomplished.

56:15

And then in verse 30 it is

56:17

translated. It is finished. We see in

56:19

the papyrae that it is also means

56:21

paid in full. Jesus did it all.

56:23

for us. Amen. Each person on this

56:25

panel like Peter and John are still

56:27

examining the evidence and every time we

56:29

do as the Holy Spirit leads the

56:31

way it gives continual confirmation of the

56:33

truths that God has revealed so keep

56:35

looking at the evidence asking God to

56:38

direct you. I want to encourage you

56:40

no matter what you've done, no matter

56:42

where you've been, no matter how far

56:44

you have fallen, Jesus can forgive, clean,

56:46

redeem, and then send you forth as

56:48

His witness. Amen. Amen. What a powerful

56:50

lesson. the truth and the grace found

56:52

in Jesus Christ. And that's what we

56:54

want to close with. We want to

56:56

remember that Jesus Christ is filled with

56:58

truth and with grace. We've got that

57:00

beautiful balance in the life of Jesus

57:02

Christ. And he comes to us today

57:04

in his word with truth and with

57:06

grace. And of course that grace is

57:08

what enables us or

57:10

empowers us to

57:12

see the truth and

57:14

to embrace the truth

57:16

and to walk

57:18

in the truth. Well,

57:21

we're almost finished

57:23

with themes in the

57:25

Gospel of John.

57:27

We just got one

57:29

study left. That That

57:31

study is going

57:33

to be entitled entitled

57:35

Knowing Jesus Jesus. and His

57:37

Word, and it's

57:39

our hope and prayer

57:41

that as we've gone

57:43

through all of

57:45

these studies in the

57:47

book of John, the

57:49

of John, that

57:51
