Iwas returning from a recent business trip and the light flashed on the dashboard to “Change Oil.” I still had over 500 miles remaining on the trip. Normally, I would stop somewhere, have the vehicle serviced and continue my trip. That crossed my mind and was immediately discarded. Why? Because I was in a rental car.
“Why We Never Wax A Rental Car” is the subtitle of two of my programs and upcoming book. Have you ever waxed a rental car? Changed oil in a rental car? Rotated the tires on a rental car? The answer to all of these are probably NO! Why? Because we don’t own it. We don’t care.
Does your health, waistline, finances, marriage, relationships or career resemble a rental car? Would you like to just throw the keys of 2014 on the counter and forget about it? Well you can’t. It’s part of your life. It will be 1/70th, 1/80th or some fraction of your life. 2014 also establishes where you begin 2015. Are you excited or on the verge of regurgitating at your 2014 results? Did 2014 produce results or excuses?
Are you getting ready to play resolutions again or will you actually write solid goals? Here is the good news. We all must start somewhere. Start now! The best time to plant a shade tree was 20 years ago. The second best date is today.
I began playing guitar the year I turned 50. After a program years ago, a lady asked how long I had been playing the guitar. At the time, I had been playing two years. She told me she was sixty and wanted to learn but by the time she played for two years, she would be 62. I’ll never forget the look on her face when I asked how old she would be in two years if she didn’t learn to play the guitar.
Do something to change your results. Stop treating different aspects of your life like a rental car. Take OWNERSHIP! A friend just shared a story about a guy that quit smoking by using an app on his phone that kept track of the money he spent on cigarettes. The health advantages of quitting didn’t faze him but the money helped him quit. Whatever it takes to motivate you, find it. Find your own WHY.
If you would like a simple guide to assist you, try my “New Day, New Results” Goal Setting Guide. I have also began using an app called Goal Tracker on my Android phone. This allows me to review my goals daily.
If it’s a health, finance or personal development goal, do it for yourself AND the people that care about you. Hey, if you are reading this, do it for me because I also care for you.
Don’t play resolutions again this year! I would love to hear some of your goals for 2015.
