All right , listen up , it's the old

0:05

jarhead back again , to give you some

0:07

great financial advice Advice

0:10

that is guaranteed . What did I say

0:12

? Financial Whoa ? That's

0:15

not correct . It's career advice , but

0:17

today it has a financial

0:20

twist . So

0:22

I'm going to give you some good advice today , and it's

0:24

based on an

0:28

email I got from a financial planner on

0:30

the four areas to focus in for

0:33

financial success and

0:36

I looked at it . I thought this is a reasonable

0:39

approach . It was basically you set

0:41

goals , you measure your progress , keep

0:43

emotions in check and work with professionals

0:46

Kind of a pitch to hire them right , but

0:49

anyhow . So I thought maybe there's some good nuggets

0:51

in here and how it could apply to

0:53

your career . So let's

0:56

get going on thinking about that . So let's take a look

0:58

at those four areas , those

1:00

four focus areas , and how they may

1:02

apply to your career . First

1:05

is goals . Bottom line . You

1:07

need to set them for your career . How

1:09

can you have professional growth if

1:12

you don't know what you want

1:14

to grow to be ? You

1:16

got to have it right Now . Growth can be in

1:18

a lot of ways . One might be where

1:20

you want to go from where you are to

1:22

a management position . Another

1:25

may be more technical , something like

1:27

becoming a master plumber or

1:29

getting your PhD in engineering

1:31

. So what

1:33

you need to do is to think about

1:35

where you would like to be in a

1:37

period of time such as maybe a couple

1:39

to five years , and then that becomes

1:42

your goal . I know , when

1:44

I started with my last company , I was hired as

1:46

a senior analyst , but I set a

1:48

goal for myself to become a project leader within

1:50

two years and a program manager within five

1:52

. Those goals kept

1:55

me focused on the sorts of projects

1:57

and customers that I wanted to work with

1:59

, and ultimately I progressed faster

2:01

and I was a PM in about three

2:03

years , but I knew where I wanted to

2:05

go . So think about where

2:08

you would like to be in the future and

2:10

make that your goal . So

2:12

next measure progress

2:14

right . Second step it's

2:16

essential to keeping your goal . You

2:19

need to set intermediate

2:21

goals . In my case , my ultimate goal was

2:23

to become a PM within five

2:25

years , but the step I needed to take

2:27

to get there was to become a project leader . So

2:30

that was my way of measuring success

2:33

toward my ultimate goal of being a PM

2:35

. So do the same for yourself . If

2:37

you want to get an advanced degree within

2:40

, say , the next four years . Think about what you need

2:42

to do over those four years that will lead

2:44

to that degree and measure your

2:46

progress . Too many people fool

2:48

themselves by setting a far off

2:51

large goal , but do not set intermediate

2:53

goals to measure their progress and

2:55

when the time comes close that they said they wanted

2:57

to achieve their goal , they're not even near

3:00

where they should be . Don't

3:02

be like them . Set

3:04

intermediate goals and measure your progress

3:06

and if you get off track , think about

3:08

why you got off track and how you can adjust

3:10

your plans or either make your goals different

3:13

than you initially intended . You

3:15

may have to push your goals further out , but don't

3:18

beat yourself up over this . Just realize that

3:20

sometimes other priorities , like family and health

3:22

, take over and you need to adjust

3:24

your final and intermediate goals . Do

3:27

it then . Get back on track , okay

3:29

. Moving on the

3:31

third one , keep emotions in check . So this was

3:34

focused on market volatility and

3:36

the need to stay the course during periods of

3:38

market volatility to achieve long-term

3:40

financial goals . Right , okay , roger . Same

3:43

thing could be said about your professional

3:45

life . Let's say , a coworker

3:48

gets the advancement that you want or

3:50

somebody gets more credit for a project that

3:52

you should have gotten that recognition for

3:54

. You can't let your emotions

3:57

get the better of you . It will do you

3:59

no good . This is a good time

4:01

to write out your thoughts on your

4:03

own . Keep this writing to yourself . Write

4:06

them out , maybe even more than once

4:08

. Okay , I found that that helps too

4:10

. Throw the first one out . Start all over again . It

4:13

settles your mind and gives you

4:15

the calmness that is essential should

4:18

, for example , you want to talk to your boss

4:20

about why you didn't get that promotion or

4:22

project credit . Asking

4:24

for this feedback in a calm , professional

4:27

manner could do a couple things . One

4:29

is make the boss aware of your feelings about

4:31

the situation . Maybe she did not realize

4:33

that you wanted a promotion , but

4:36

the best reason for this is that you may learn

4:38

of a weakness you have , but you

4:40

did not know , and so now you can

4:42

work to eliminate that weakness . Now

4:44

you've turned what you thought was a loss into

4:46

something positive . So

4:48

keep your emotions in

4:50

check . Finally

4:53

, the focus on getting

4:55

professional help . What the financial

4:57

advisor tried to get across was to hire

4:59

them to manage your financial

5:01

investments , but for us , I

5:03

think this could mean get a mentor

5:05

, even an informal one

5:07

, somebody who can guide you

5:09

and is willing to give you advice that you

5:11

may not want to hear , but need to hear Someone

5:14

who has your best interests at heart and

5:16

is able and willing to give you the time

5:19

. And it really helps if it's somebody

5:21

you just enjoy being around . Okay

5:23

, so there you have it . Financial advice

5:26

turned into career advice by the old jarhead

5:28

have a goal , measure progress

5:30

, keep your emotions in check and

5:33

get a mentor . I guarantee

5:36

you this will help . Thanks

5:38

for listening and tell your friends

5:40

and look forward to next week's Bye , thank

5:42

you , thank you

5:44

.
