Let's go places. Charlie I'm Pat Boyle. How

1:35

you doing today, Charlie? How are you

1:37

doing? up? Not too bad. up? Not How are we

1:39

bad. How are we doing? Good. you know, we've

1:41

had a lot going on in the

1:43

last week with the coaching change of the

1:45

change and the Blackhawks and the first two

1:47

games of games of the Andrew

1:49

Sorenson era under

1:51

our belts and he picks up his

1:53

first win. his first win at

1:55

MSG over the Rangers again

1:58

not a not a offense five

2:00

or six or seven of to

2:02

or six or seven

2:04

goals it was, but it was, once again,

2:07

it was, uh, but it was,

2:09

it was really an entertaining hockey

2:11

game. And I think we can

2:13

see. it's only been like only

2:15

been like two practices

2:17

and two games. to

2:19

we're starting to see a little

2:21

bit some of the fingerprints fingerprints

2:23

of Anders and what he wants

2:26

to do with this team. this

2:28

team and what. and

2:30

them kind of the new tweaks tweaks

2:32

and philosophies and And I think

2:34

And I think some

2:36

of it came to fruition

2:38

on Monday night at

2:40

Madison Square Garden. Yeah, after

2:42

the game, which game, which was first first

2:45

as the interim head coach of the

2:47

I think it was I think it was

2:49

Nick Foligno that after the game that gonna

2:51

take a little bit a little bit to kind

2:53

of of get acclimated to some of

2:55

the little tweaks that Sorenson wants

2:57

to make. to make. And then I think

2:59

I think was the one that said, that

3:01

said, He found him, it was it was on one

3:04

of Winnipeg's goals. I can't

3:06

remember which one that he felt

3:08

responsible for because it was

3:10

an old habit that he's trying

3:12

to break old far as what

3:14

he's wants him to do to break

3:16

as far as what breakdown that happened to

3:18

do in that, It was the shifely

3:20

goal. happened. It was the Dickinson and

3:23

That's were at the face -off

3:25

circle. were at the face-off

3:27

circle. Oh yeah, with Murphy. Yeah, and

3:29

Shifley the draw and Dickinson

3:31

went to the half to

3:34

the half take. to take the,

3:36

I can't remember I

3:38

can't remember who the winger was

3:40

that set up the play. up the play.

3:42

And And then Murphy. pick up didn't

3:44

pick up We had We had

3:46

Tony break it down. I

3:48

like it like you did the

3:51

the post game comments that, You know,

3:53

he did something. that he

3:55

he supposed to do under

3:57

Luke. Luke, but But

4:00

under Anders, they have a slightly different

4:02

variation of that, I don't know

4:04

if he was protecting his teammates or

4:06

what, you know, I'm not exactly

4:08

sure, but like Tony didn't seem to

4:11

think that goal was on him,

4:13

even though he said that goal was

4:15

on me, I cost him the

4:17

game. Yeah, that could be Jason just

4:19

taking ownership of not wanting to

4:21

throw the kind of the teammates or

4:23

whoever the breakdown was under the

4:26

bus, or it could be him being

4:28

honest and saying, you know, maybe

4:30

there is some sort of little variation

4:32

that a little nuance that Sorensen

4:34

wants his guys to play. And so

4:36

I think that the point being

4:39

is there are going to be some

4:41

little tweaks along the way. It's

4:43

not like Sorensen is coming in here

4:45

and saying, hey, we're overhauling everything

4:47

at the same time. It's kind of

4:49

just going to be these incremental

4:52

tweaks. And Foligno had said it after

4:54

the game of the Winnipeg. He's

4:56

like, I'm sure we're going to work

4:58

on this tomorrow at practice. And

5:00

sure enough, that's exactly what they did

5:02

at practice on Sunday, really honing

5:04

in on the aggressive two -man forecheck

5:07

with the 2 -1 -2. And then I

5:09

think the very next drill after

5:11

that was just being cleaner with their

5:13

zone exits. And so those are

5:15

the two areas to me that jump

5:17

out at me. And also, of

5:20

course, the defenseman being a little bit

5:22

more aggressive and chipping in offensively,

5:24

joining the rush, being able to be

5:26

kind of a five -man unit in

5:28

the offensive zone and just being

5:30

a little bit more aggressive without sacrificing

5:32

defensively of giving up more odd -man

5:35

rushes. Yeah, so it lends itself

5:37

for a more entertaining brand of hockey.

5:39

It opens things up a little

5:41

bit. The aggressive forecheck, I thought their

5:43

compete level was just ratcheted up

5:45

several notches. They were winning 50 -50

5:48

battles. We

5:50

saw Taylor Hall get the

5:52

turnover below the goal line.

5:54

Then he set up Bertuzzi,

5:56

Dickinson won a puck battle.

5:58

in the defensive zone. zone. He

6:00

outlets to to and the Medard and Hall have

6:02

that two one. Hall got

6:05

a little lucky there. I

6:07

don't know how that one

6:09

went in, but. They

6:11

don't ask they they ask how

6:13

many. they ask how many. But I mean, I've I've

6:15

already seen. you know, in the know,

6:17

in the brief interactions we've had

6:19

with with Anders. of you know, You

6:21

know. Defensemen jumping up

6:23

in the rush. We've seen seen

6:25

in back -to -back games, three shots

6:27

on goal against the Rangers. on

6:30

We saw Martinez score. We saw are

6:32

in score in You know, so

6:34

both of the goals come from the the

6:36

goals come from the D. And if

6:38

you look you look at. the from

6:41

the the Rangers game. mean,

6:43

you know, know, why Kaiser, I I think he

6:45

had three shots on goal. on

6:47

goal. Classic had three three

6:49

shots on goal at MSG. has

6:52

been a has been a

6:54

concerted effort. the rush and

6:56

like that Bertuzi Hall

6:58

de Nato line, but Bertuzin Hall

7:00

align, their Bertuzzi Hall had

7:02

their best games as

7:04

a last night at night at

7:07

MSG, no question about it. Absolutely, and And

7:09

it was kind of crazy to think

7:11

about. I had written down that down So

7:13

that was the sixth So of the

7:15

season. the sixth he ended the season. So

7:17

drought. It was his first goal

7:19

since November his first goal since that was

7:21

just his second was just five goal

7:23

of the season. Three of them

7:25

have come on the have come on the

7:27

power of them was that that five

7:29

goal in LA where they in the

7:31

final seconds of the game where

7:33

they forced overtime and The ended up

7:35

winning it in overtime. it And so

7:38

that was so that second five on

7:40

five goal of the season. His

7:42

first since the Halloween game in

7:44

San Jose. So it's like, game in

7:46

the Hawks So it's like, need

7:48

to get going

7:50

offensively. Both on the on

7:52

the power more so at even strength

7:54

because that's where the area the

7:57

area that the Blackhawks have kind

7:59

of been on. trajectory as

8:01

last season. I think last year

8:03

year their goals per per 60 at on

8:05

5 was 1 .77 got when

8:07

Luke got fired it was 1

8:09

.9 so it was like and

8:11

similar and so that's partly

8:13

what contributed to the

8:16

coaching change. I And I

8:18

also want to say this,

8:20

this. Like in fairness, so I

8:22

saw Boston go through the

8:24

coaching change with Montgomery to Joe Sacco

8:26

And the intensity level

8:28

and the compete level elevated when

8:30

Joe Sacco was named the

8:32

interim, similar bump that got

8:34

Louis got when they

8:36

went from Drew Drew to

8:38

Montgomery. Montgomery. I I think it's less

8:40

about the previous coach more about, oh, this

8:42

is a new coach. this is a new coach. We

8:44

have to make sure we're on our best. or we have

8:46

to up we have to up our compete

8:48

level because we're starting from scratch. so so some

8:50

of that I just feel is just

8:53

inherent. like like natural you're just going

8:55

to get a coaching change and doesn't really

8:57

speak to the previous coach, it speaks

8:59

to more of to the there's a new guy

9:01

here, and you better of off on the

9:03

right foot with him. And so it

9:05

was nice to see the on the right foot with him.

9:07

compete in that way. like the first period against

9:09

Winnipeg, I thought was really good. good

9:11

only had three shots in the second, three

9:13

shots in the third. So you'd like to

9:15

see a little bit more of that, but

9:17

I felt like the compete level has been

9:19

there over the last two games. two games. Yeah, and

9:21

you you know, yeah, you're trying to, you

9:23

know, you're starting quote a clean

9:26

slate with the new coach.

9:28

So you're trying to, coach, so know,

9:30

get that relationship you know, on

9:32

the right note. I also think

9:34

up off on the right note. the I

9:36

also gone too, coaching, you

9:39

know, like. gone about coaching,

9:41

you know, is on the the, the is

9:44

on the to show what they

9:46

have, what and they have and to, to,

9:48

not leave any doubt that that, You

9:50

know, and I'll be honest, be I thought I

9:52

mean, I thought the compete, the I

9:54

saw at MSG I have

9:56

not seen. have not seen for

9:58

16 minutes. throughout the

10:01

first 26 of the season.

10:03

season. So, you you know, take that

10:05

for what it's worth. I will also

10:07

say will also know, too, you know, it's

10:09

this more aggressive, and

10:12

again, this this is two

10:14

games. so they haven't even

10:16

gotten into the, into the, the

10:18

nuances of the that one,

10:20

two, that sometimes says says

10:22

will almost look like

10:24

a 3-2 two. of the because of

10:26

the centermen playing up so much. It

10:29

still gave up scoring

10:31

chances. scoring chances were

10:33

25 were 25-23 Rangers, high High

10:35

danger chances were 12

10:37

-8 in favor of

10:39

the Rangers. So Like Arvin

10:42

was excellent as he's

10:44

been a very, very

10:46

good very of this season. of

10:48

this season. You you know,

10:50

you're going to see more scoring

10:52

opportunities it looks like for the for

10:54

with this top and you're going

10:56

to have more, and you're know, trying

10:58

to get the puck. trying to to

11:00

players like like in

11:02

motion with this system, but

11:05

you're also gonna probably give up

11:07

a little bit too. And there

11:09

were some were some chances that were

11:11

given up. that were given up. I think

11:13

Panarin had seven shots on Panarin had

11:16

seven shots on goal. Yeah. The one

11:18

where he. Pardon me? He

11:20

had You attempts. shot attempts. 12 shot

11:22

attempts. So don't one, I even

11:25

counted as a shot on

11:27

goal where he's back where

11:29

he's backdoor, by, opens up

11:31

his opens up his five hole, and puts

11:33

it through his legs and

11:35

off the back post. the back

11:38

and and out of way. way.

11:40

Like, I mean, I mean, that's an That's

11:42

a centimeter or two from going

11:44

in the net. Yeah, I I thought first period

11:47

period, the up a gave up a

11:49

lot of chances. think And I think

11:51

after the first period, things really settled

11:53

down. you look you look at the danger

11:55

chances in the the second and third periods

11:57

combined, I think it was it was like

11:59

it was like 10 -2

12:01

Chicago. So it really settled

12:03

down after the first period

12:05

or something along those lines.

12:07

But I agree. Where I

12:09

noticed the biggest difference over

12:11

the last few weeks was

12:14

Hawks were going into the... The

12:16

Hawks held the 2 -1 lead into the

12:18

third period, right? so I can't remember

12:20

how long they had that lead for. was,

12:22

they scored in the second period. So

12:24

however long it was. the

12:26

Hawks weren't sitting back and trying

12:29

to protect the lead in the

12:31

third period. Like they had that, It

12:34

was the post by Tyler

12:36

Bertuzzi early in the third period

12:38

then they got the power play generated

12:40

three shot attempts Donato had the

12:42

breakaway that could have made it three

12:44

to one So it's like they

12:46

had chances where they were being the

12:48

aggressors Whereas you look at

12:51

some of the games, you know, the

12:53

Philadelphia game up two to nothing, losing

12:55

over time. the Minnesota game Black

12:57

Friday that kind of led to the

12:59

spiral of all of this leading two

13:01

to nothing in the third period, end

13:03

up falling three to two in regulation.

13:05

So it was like bracing for that

13:07

one in those previous games. They were

13:09

like bracing for the goal against or

13:12

they were trying to play a prevent

13:14

defense And in the new york game

13:16

it felt like in the third period

13:18

The hawks felt like the better team

13:20

or it was very close 50 50

13:22

where Hawks and Rangers were both kind

13:24

of the aggressors and the Hawks

13:26

weren't kind of sitting back and protecting it

13:28

and so I Again, I

13:31

don't know how much of that is just

13:33

you're getting that new coach bump that you

13:35

just you you're kind of riding the high

13:37

of a of a new. coach. it

13:40

was encouraging to see that some

13:42

of what was ailing the Blackhawks over

13:44

the last few few weeks very

13:46

small sample size of the the one

13:48

game that we can pinpoint right

13:50

now in the Rangers that third period

13:52

Holding a 2 -1 lead. They were

13:55

able to actually attack Even

13:57

though they didn't get that next goal. They just

13:59

kind of held on to the two goal

14:01

lead, that they weren't sitting

14:03

back. They were actually trying

14:05

to be the aggressors in

14:07

the third. How about the

14:09

bump that players that have

14:11

already played under Anders might

14:14

be getting from this? And

14:16

I think about Kevin Kurchinsky,

14:18

who returned and had a

14:20

fantastic game, and already you

14:22

hurt Soren's and say, he'll

14:24

be in the line up

14:26

Thursday against the Islanders. you

14:28

know, rest assure, we don't,

14:30

you know, even if Martinez

14:32

is healthy, like he won't

14:34

be the guy that's sitting

14:36

out. You look at how

14:39

Kaiser played. We talked, or

14:41

you talked to Lucas Ritkel

14:43

before they left for New

14:45

York, and Lucas basically said,

14:47

Sorenson is the reason I'm

14:49

here now. Like he helped

14:51

build him back up, you

14:53

know, when he went back

14:55

down to Rockford last year,

14:57

he's probably a, you know,

14:59

a broken player in a

15:01

lot of ways, the up,

15:04

the down, the up, the

15:06

down, and he said they

15:08

had some really frank conversations.

15:10

you know, some good, some bad,

15:12

you know, telling players, you know,

15:14

not necessarily what they want to

15:16

hear, but you could tell by

15:18

his reaction that Anders has resonated

15:20

with him. And I wonder, you

15:23

know, if the Phil Kerr chefs

15:25

and like others can, and that's

15:27

kind of what this this team

15:29

You know, this team isn't just

15:31

Bedard is having a sophomore slump

15:33

season. You just talked about for

15:35

Tuesday 12 or 13. I mean,

15:37

we can go on and on

15:39

and on and on everybody other

15:41

than Ryan Denado is is not

15:43

having a career year. Right. Yeah.

15:45

And it was, I noticed that

15:47

in the locker room on.

15:49

when the Hawks

15:51

had their first

15:53

practice under Sorenson

15:55

like Rykel was

15:57

was smiling and

15:59

he was Confident

16:01

on the eye.

16:03

He's always had

16:05

that confidence at

16:07

least this season

16:09

last year. You

16:11

mentioned though He was, it

16:13

was a mentally fragile. player

16:15

and dealing with a lot of

16:17

expectations going into the season. not

16:20

performing, being healthy scratched at

16:22

different times. being

16:24

sent to Rockford, which in the

16:26

years past wasn't necessarily a demotion, but

16:28

in last year it was because

16:30

he was expected to be a full

16:32

-time NHL player. And

16:34

so when the Hawks make the coaching

16:36

change again, didn't have anything to do with

16:38

Luke for, For for Luke, because Rykel

16:40

was like, it was actually bittersweet for me

16:43

that you see one guy leave, but

16:45

then your brain changes and you like, oh,

16:47

who's the guy coming in? Oh, it's

16:49

the guy that I had success with down

16:51

in Rockford for several years. So for

16:53

him. he can immediately Play

16:56

or continue to play in the comfort

16:58

zone knowing that he kind of has

17:00

that built -in trust. with

17:02

while everyone around

17:05

the Blackhawks that hasn't

17:07

played under Sorenson is going to have to

17:09

try to earn that trust from day one.

17:11

And so he's already kind of built that

17:13

in where Sorenson knows who he is as

17:15

a player. He knows who Sorenson is as

17:17

a coach, and they can kind of get

17:19

off the ground running what their conversations can

17:21

be like and not kind of being a

17:23

little bit timid over the next few weeks

17:25

as they feel each other out. How

17:27

do you explain Hall and Bertuzzi's

17:29

game on Monday night? It

17:32

that the, like you said, clean

17:34

slate? trying to make

17:36

a great first impression with

17:38

a new coach. Is

17:40

it the Rangers, and

17:42

they're giving them time

17:44

and space defensively? Uh,

17:47

is it? Dear

17:51

autumn leaves. You won't

18:14

places. you

18:20

know, feeling like, all right, you know.

18:22

you know, we didn't excel excel

18:24

under the previous regime.

18:27

This style of play is lend

18:29

lend itself to more offensive

18:31

opportunities. mean, how do you

18:33

explain? do you explain noticeable

18:35

difference in their

18:37

games. their games last night compared

18:40

to the previous 26 or

18:42

so. so? Yeah, I feel I a like

18:44

it's a combination of all of it I, you

18:46

know, you you know, you look at the

18:48

score sheet and you're like like goal, one

18:50

assist for Taylor Taylor Hall, the The one

18:52

goal was and that was his only

18:54

shot on goal, right? on goal, right? he

18:56

made to Tyler made to Tyler just unbelievable. But

18:59

if you rewind you rewind and watch play

19:01

from kind of the start. the start,

19:03

Mika tries to ring the

19:06

puck around the boards and it just

19:08

flubs on his stick. his And then Zabanajad

19:10

goes to the front of the net. the net

19:12

and he kind of looked lost defensively like he

19:14

ran into his own defender and left

19:16

back door and it was And it was kind

19:18

of like, what was was Jet doing? doing

19:21

of sums up the season that he's

19:23

been having so far because he's been

19:25

really inconsistent for the Rangers, for

19:27

puzzling. like very so it felt

19:29

like. like Bertuzzi Hall that

19:32

new coach bump, new energy life, life make hard

19:34

Make sure you're setting the tone for

19:36

the new coach and that can filter

19:38

through the rest of the team the team.

19:40

also that Rangers team is just I

19:42

mean that would that been a circus show

19:44

in New York show last couple for so

19:46

couple It felt like the it

19:48

of like the on a mentally fragile team

19:51

as well. So just kind of

19:53

try to encapsulate just kind I try to was,

19:55

was I thought most notable of the

19:57

two given the fact that it's like,

19:59

it's like, at the score sheet and I

20:02

don't know how many shots on goal

20:04

he finished with five shots on goal

20:06

and I think 10 shot attempts like

20:08

once the last time Bertuzi had 10

20:10

shot attempts in a game I don't

20:12

even know if he got that again

20:14

in Toronto because Austin Matthews was probably

20:16

getting all the shot attempts on his

20:18

line so just just a really noteworthy

20:20

game by Bertuzi that you hope he

20:22

can carry over into the coming weeks.

20:24

So back on the on the

20:26

back end of Lassick I've

20:29

mentioned that he scored those

20:31

back-to-back games, three shots on

20:33

goals against the Rangers. Have

20:36

you noticed his, I think

20:38

his clapper has gotten better

20:40

here, just within this season.

20:42

The confidence he has in

20:45

that shot, he's getting shots

20:47

through, like, his goal against

20:49

Winnipeg, there was a layered

20:52

screen, but I love, like,

20:55

how he kept the puck somewhat low there.

20:57

I've been impressed with classics, offensive improvement, along

20:59

with his entire game, but have you noticed

21:01

that shot wise from him? Yeah, what game

21:03

was it where the puck came to him

21:05

and he stepped into it and it's like

21:07

legitimately one of the fastest snapshots of the

21:09

season so far? Was it Anaheim? Yeah maybe

21:11

I don't recall I can see it but

21:13

I can't remember yeah so like the puck

21:15

came to I mean it was he was

21:17

taken all the momentum fires that snapshot and

21:19

I can't remember what the probably should have

21:22

looked it up before but I can't remember

21:24

what the the miles per hour was on

21:26

that shop but I think it was like

21:28

a hundred and three or something like that

21:30

it was like legitimately one of the the

21:32

highest or the fastest slapshots of the season.

21:34

And I overheard him with a conversation. I

21:36

was standing right next to a reporter that

21:38

ended up relaying that that info to him

21:40

the next day at practice and he was

21:42

like, I couldn't believe when I saw it.

21:44

And like I wonder if he saw that

21:46

mile. and was like,

21:49

Oh, I didn't realize

21:51

I have that heavy

21:53

of a that heavy of a

21:55

maybe that kind of

21:57

gave him some confidence

21:59

to gave him the puck

22:01

a little bit more fire

22:03

that he has one

22:05

of those elite slap

22:07

shots if he steps

22:09

into it fully. I

22:11

thought it was interesting,

22:13

I thought it So first Pat,

22:16

so the games of the season,

22:18

of the Hawks had four goals

22:20

by a by a defenseman. two of them

22:23

by Seth Jones, who's out with a foot injury. a

22:25

foot One of them was was

22:27

Isaac who's now in Rockford. in

22:29

And the other is other is

22:31

who Crive, who has been a a

22:33

healthy scratch. So the Hawks goals from

22:35

a from a defense been against Winnipeg

22:37

Winnipeg or against Boston and Winnipeg. And

22:40

so from the Boston and Winnipeg

22:42

game, then then scores two goals, goals, Martina

22:44

So it's like so go from four

22:46

goals by four goals 25 games to three

22:48

goals by. three goals by, by a in

22:50

in periods. Like was crazy how it it kind

22:52

of just, how it happened like that.

22:55

But for sure seen sure seen the growth and I

22:57

honestly And I honestly wonder if it's

22:59

because of that shot that he at 103 or

23:01

104, or 104, whatever it was, like, oh,

23:03

that maybe I like, oh, maybe I should

23:05

probably use this a little more often.

23:07

often. How about Kevin Kevin

23:10

So he is

23:12

called up with the

23:14

the Martinez neck injury. We're hearing

23:16

We're hearing day to day with that.

23:18

He's with the team on the

23:20

trip, so we'll see when see is

23:22

able to go. to go. But

23:24

boy, and boy. I think Kevin

23:27

I think Kevin has had a... down

23:29

An up and down

23:31

mostly positive start to

23:33

his season in Rockford, he

23:35

but he looked really

23:37

comfortable on the ice.

23:39

his first game his first game

23:41

in the NHL this season. The

23:44

question is, a is this

23:46

a temporary call -up he could

23:48

he play his way into

23:50

staying with the Hawks for

23:52

a while? while? Yeah, I've got to be

23:54

honest. I a a little surprised to

23:56

see him get called up because I

23:58

didn't think he was really it up

24:00

in Rockford and he did have that

24:03

tough start the first few weeks were

24:05

a little bit hard on him and

24:07

he ended up having a minus 13

24:09

rating which is second worst on the

24:11

team in Rockford and so it wasn't

24:13

like he was really blowing the doors

24:15

off like Frank Nazar is that who

24:17

we'll get to in a little bit.

24:19

The one thing that I had noticed

24:21

about Corchinsky is they were really trying

24:23

to find him a role in Rockford

24:25

as far as like defense pairing. Like

24:27

I know they they played him with

24:29

Ethan Del Mastro. Then they tried Corchinsky

24:31

with Lefshinoff together. Then they moved Corchinsky

24:33

to the right side to try to

24:35

see that. So they were tinkering with

24:37

a bunch of different looks with Corchinsky.

24:39

And I think the encouraging part is

24:41

just hearing Sorenson who has obviously worked

24:43

with him all season long down there

24:45

in Rockford is that he had been

24:47

progressing better over the last few games.

24:49

And so maybe the Hawks saw window

24:51

where they're like his confidence is starting

24:53

to increase. Let's maybe give him a

24:55

few games in the NHL just to

24:57

see how far he's come mentally or

24:59

just he can kind of. his own

25:01

barometer can kind of measure how far

25:03

he's come since last season, get a

25:05

couple games, then go back to Rockford.

25:07

I would be a little surprised if

25:09

this is more of a permanent call

25:11

up just because, you know, Set Jones

25:13

is gonna return I'm sure in a

25:15

few weeks. Martinez will be back in

25:17

the lineup unless they deal with. injuries

25:19

like injury after injury after injury where

25:21

they get one guy back and another

25:23

guy falls and he kind of just

25:25

has to stay then maybe but I

25:27

think the the plan would be to

25:29

send him back but you mentioned the

25:31

game against the Rangers I mean he

25:33

was awesome that the play that he

25:35

had early on on Panarin, you know,

25:37

driving up the right side and using

25:40

his stick beautifully, using the body perfectly,

25:42

he had that chance, I think it

25:44

was in the second period where it

25:46

was from Taylor Hall, right on a

25:48

T in the in the inner slot

25:50

area, and I think there was play.

25:52

Oh, that when Pat Pat hit

25:54

the the post on

25:56

the it was it

25:58

was the Korczynski shot

26:00

from the point

26:02

that led to led

26:04

post. So So just

26:06

thought he was really

26:08

noticeable. really encouraging. I

26:10

think it was about 16 -ish minutes

26:12

of of for him. so so was one

26:14

of those games where you're like, all

26:16

right, he wasn't. wasn't. He wasn't

26:18

flashy. he He he wasn't, he

26:20

didn't look scrambly look

26:23

in his own defensively in his own end.

26:25

He looked just responsible, and it

26:27

looked like he had been growing in

26:29

that department, and you hope that

26:31

he carries that over on Thursday the

26:33

Thursday against the I think it's think

26:35

it's also, and Luke, Luke to to

26:37

do this as well, trying to

26:39

pair these young defensemen with a

26:41

veteran. Sometimes last year that was

26:43

not. not. able to happen because they

26:45

didn't have enough veterans, well and health

26:47

was an issue. But But like

26:49

last night, with with

26:51

I'm I'm putting Flasik among

26:54

the vets, even though he's though

26:56

he's young, was with with Brody Nolan

26:58

Allen was with Murphy. Murphy.

27:00

And I think it's just

27:02

nice to have a stabilizing

27:05

force out there in a

27:07

veteran defenseman that's not afraid

27:09

to communicate and can put

27:11

that younger D -man at ease.

27:13

We about injuries. We're We're

27:15

starting to see, you know, the hawks

27:17

have been relatively clean

27:20

in this clean in this but

27:22

in the last couple of

27:24

weeks of weeks Seth Seth down,

27:26

down on Peter is out

27:28

is least a week with

27:30

a groin injury, maybe two. maybe

27:32

two. We we talked about

27:34

Martinez, the brosois situation, that of

27:36

goes on and

27:38

on, but, uh, but soda

27:40

bloom. finally gets his win after

27:43

he's been, know, a win.

27:45

Charlie, you he's been, I mean,

27:47

27:49

27:51

28:05

you know he's got a what

28:07

a nine 20 save percentage on

28:09

the season nine 20 and he

28:11

has just two wins to show

28:13

for it I mean the poor

28:15

guy and the league average for

28:17

safe percentage this season is going

28:19

down it was like in the

28:21

eight eight it was like eight

28:23

ninety something like a three weeks

28:25

ago and now it got back

28:28

up to nine oh one but

28:30

he's got a nine 20 save

28:32

percentage that's significantly above the league

28:34

average and the poor guy only

28:36

had one win to show for

28:38

it prior to the New York

28:40

game Yeah, so I mean that

28:42

when you look at the Brosois

28:44

setback with his, you know, meniscus

28:46

surgery now having it two times,

28:48

this is one of the silver

28:50

linings to that was, you know,

28:52

Arvid getting an opportunity to put

28:54

last year behind him and while,

28:56

like you said, the winds aren't

28:59

there. the confidence he looks like

29:01

a different guy in that and

29:03

they're gonna need to lean on

29:05

him here because uh... morazzic is

29:07

uh... you know it has had

29:09

problems with the growing in the

29:11

past so you want to be

29:13

uh... smart about that he's had

29:15

a he's had a pretty strong

29:17

workload a big workload obviously to

29:19

start the season will have a

29:21

back-to-back scenario this weekend And

29:24

so we'll see likely Drew

29:26

Camasso make his NHL debut

29:28

on Saturday or Sunday. Yeah,

29:31

and when they had called up

29:34

Camasso earlier in the season when

29:36

solder bloom was sick, they kind

29:38

of took him out for about

29:41

a week or so, they really

29:43

rode Peter Morazzic during that stretch.

29:45

And I don't know how much

29:48

that stretches to blame for just,

29:50

you know, I don't think the

29:52

Hawks really wanted to ride Peter

29:55

that much. And I do think,

29:57

and I do think, the solder

29:59

bloom, game mark that point

30:01

that point in

30:04

time, hadn't had the, you

30:06

know, officially know, had

30:08

had the second surgery.

30:10

surgery. And so were

30:12

still under the We were

30:14

still under the understanding that there

30:16

possibly could be a way that

30:19

our didn't reach reach that threshold.

30:21

And was maybe ready to come

30:23

back and be the be the

30:25

Well, that plan that went

30:28

out the window. went out the window

30:30

and he's going to, I

30:32

think in his next in his

30:34

games, right? reach 60 games, So.

30:36

Right. Yep. So, so so they

30:39

just have to rework that,

30:41

that thought of, of whatever

30:43

that the game plan was when

30:45

Lauren was, you was be the

30:47

be the back up earlier

30:49

in the year again, still

30:51

still hasn't. know, he'll you

30:54

know, he'll probably get sent down

30:56

to down to Rockford would imagine

30:58

some some. Some

31:00

rehab starts. yeah conditioning

31:02

state you get 14 days. okay so conditioning

31:04

So stint, I would assume

31:07

they would go that route with

31:09

him. him and yeah I don't I don't I

31:11

don't the way he's playing I don't I The

31:13

way he's playing, I don't see them putting

31:15

him on waivers because I don't think

31:17

he'd last very long. long Yeah, no no chance.

31:19

I think that... that you avoid that

31:21

scenario at all costs. it is

31:23

gonna be an interesting situation over

31:25

the weekend where they do run

31:28

into that back -to -back back to back

31:30

has not been great in Rockford. His

31:32

numbers have been tough. been tough and I

31:35

think if you if he had been putting up better numbers,

31:37

like I like I remember a few weeks or

31:39

a few years ago when when had to lean

31:41

on Jackson lean on for a while. And it was

31:43

like, oh, a while and guy was just in college

31:45

a couple of years ago, but he college a couple

31:47

ended up but him. they ended it

31:49

was weird that he wasn't putting up

31:51

great numbers in Rockford, but he was

31:53

doing well with Chicago. he So it was,

31:56

so maybe there's, So it maybe there's the whole

31:58

bed the hope do. up the Hawks do. have

32:00

to start Camesso in one of the games. Sorensen

32:05

is the guy that knows him

32:08

the best because he's had him

32:10

in Rockford. So maybe there's that

32:12

little built -in comfortability for Camesso

32:14

that if he has to steps

32:16

into one of the games to

32:18

spot -start. While I know Sorensen was

32:20

hoping that with Mrazic it was

32:22

closer to one week than two,

32:24

but I think you got to

32:27

play the long game here. You

32:29

want to probably play closer to

32:31

two, maybe even beyond that just

32:33

to be extra safe. And so

32:35

we'll see how the gold -tending

32:37

situation plays itself out. All right.

32:39

Let's talk Frankie and Azar. We

32:41

tend to do that on pretty

32:43

much every podcast and rightfully so.

32:45

Staring it up in the AHL

32:48

is the first round pick and

32:50

he's going to be one of

32:52

the media darlings. Let's say that

32:54

when he ends up landing in

32:56

Chicago full -time. He's going to be

32:58

that Adam Burrish, Patrick Sharp, Money

33:00

Soundbite that you go to. There

33:04

were some different reports, not

33:06

unlike we've been talking about.

33:08

Elliott Friedman, was just kind

33:10

of a throwaway comment, but

33:12

he's coming up soon. What

33:14

does soon mean? Some people

33:16

were speculating that because they

33:18

put Joey Anderson on waivers

33:20

on Sunday that it was

33:22

somehow linked to Nazar being

33:25

called up. And then did

33:27

Emily Kaplan put out a

33:29

report yesterday that kind of

33:31

said it's not imminent, like

33:33

not happening this week, but

33:35

it's going to happen soon?

33:37

Yeah. So this obviously came

33:39

from Elliott talking about it

33:41

on 32 Thoughts, which dropped

33:43

on Monday morning. Joey Anderson

33:46

cleared waivers later that day,

33:48

and then Emily had put

33:50

out something, I think actually

33:52

right before we found out

33:54

that Anderson had cleared, she

33:56

says. It's not not imminent, but

33:58

we're getting close. Chicago wants

34:00

its prospects to over -ripen

34:02

in the AHL in the AHL. initial

34:04

call -up plan for Nazar

34:07

was later this season But

34:09

the timeline has moved up

34:11

because of how well he's

34:13

been playing in Rockford. of how well

34:15

he's been playing in I've

34:17

said all along, I would wait

34:19

I after the New after the New Year's.

34:21

spend the majority of the

34:23

first half of the season. of the

34:25

season. down in Rockford just to make sure

34:28

that he's he's of ironing out out the kinks if

34:30

he goes through. Let's just say he goes

34:32

through a stretch of three or four games

34:34

where he only has where he only or one

34:36

point. point You want to to you him bust out

34:38

of that. out of that nice to see a

34:40

guy producing on a Uh, on a

34:42

consistent or consists like oh he's he's got two points

34:44

today and and points. And then he's got

34:46

one point. But it's like, like he, how is

34:48

going to handle? to handle you know, the know bit

34:50

of a bit of a in down in

34:52

so what so what you don't want

34:54

to happen is the call him up to

34:56

the NHL he's getting getting significant

34:59

puck touches down in

35:01

Rockford. want him don't want him to

35:03

come to the and then then he's chasing

35:05

the puck the entire time and he's

35:07

not getting puck puck touches. and he's having a having

35:09

a hard time getting his confidence going again

35:11

because he's not producing. so you just wanna

35:13

make sure that you're putting him into a

35:15

situation that would best. into a situation him

35:17

to succeed for himself and as a team as

35:19

a team. so you wouldn't want it to be

35:21

a situation where you're like where

35:23

like are struggling generating offense.

35:26

Let's bring up Nazar to help with that.

35:28

Cause then you're putting way too much

35:30

pressure on this one kid one help

35:32

solve the the five scoring scoring woes. Yeah,

35:34

no question. You would

35:36

ideally want the offense.

35:38

have its own to have its own

35:41

confidence and not being the

35:43

the answer to their problems.

35:45

You know, you to their problems, of

35:47

you want him to kind of

35:49

blend into a team that

35:51

is their their groove offensively. Let's

35:54

see if they can build upon.

35:56

upon the Rangers that they

35:58

can start getting getting like

36:01

that from the second line

36:03

Hall Donato Bertucci, all of

36:06

a sudden, you know, they're

36:08

starting to draw maybe the

36:10

top pairing or the checking

36:13

line. Maybe that opens things

36:15

up for Bedard. Both, you

36:17

hear Soren saying he wants

36:20

to get Kirishav and Bedard,

36:22

the puck, when they're moving.

36:24

And so you've got two.

36:27

Likewise players that see the

36:29

game similarly. I like the

36:31

fact that they're on that

36:33

line. McCabe has gotten the

36:36

opportunity the last couple games,

36:38

or actually just one game,

36:40

right? Yeah, on that top

36:43

line. I like what, you

36:45

know, his speed is. We'll

36:47

see if that sticks for

36:50

a while. But I also

36:52

like the fact that Anders

36:54

knows him probably better than

36:57

anybody, you know, Frank Nazar.

36:59

He's... He has shown the

37:01

ability to unlock him in

37:04

his first professional season in

37:06

Rockford. And he knows his

37:08

strengths, he knows his weaknesses,

37:10

he knows probably what he

37:13

can bring to this team.

37:15

So that familiarity part of

37:17

the equation with bringing guys

37:20

up, I love that Anders

37:22

is, He's already

37:24

got the answer sheet and he doesn't

37:26

need to be debriefed on these guys.

37:28

He knows them better than the guys

37:30

that are writing the scouting reports. Yeah,

37:33

and the player that's getting called up,

37:35

Frank Naysar, is going to have that

37:37

built-in comfortably already too, that he's like,

37:39

okay, I'm going to, you know, I

37:41

had coach that was just coaching me

37:43

for the last month and a half

37:45

down in Rockford. And I think the

37:47

ideal situation for the Blackhawks too to

37:50

call up Naysar is if they can

37:52

string, you know, if they can string

37:54

some wins together in a row, and

37:56

then you call him up while the

37:58

team is riding a high. that

38:01

would be the best scenario for Frank

38:03

Naysar too, where you're like, hey, come

38:05

elevate a group that's starting to feel

38:07

themselves, right, versus a group that's down

38:09

in the dumps and they're kind of

38:11

looking desperately for a spark. And so

38:13

I think that feels like another reason

38:15

why the Hawks could, like Taylor Hall

38:17

was saying after the game against New

38:19

York about. It's like it be nice

38:21

to stack some string some wins together

38:24

in a row so we can we

38:26

can have some more smiles while we're

38:28

playing. And so you want that to

38:30

be the scenario that Nazar is walking

38:32

into and not, hey I'm here to

38:34

help, you know, or like I'm here

38:36

to be the Savior because that would

38:38

just be unfair to him and the

38:40

team. So in our

38:43

last podcast, we got sidetracked

38:45

a couple different times. One

38:47

of them went down the

38:49

hall, the rabbit hole of

38:52

who you would like to

38:54

see this team ad and

38:56

I went Mitch Marner crazy.

38:59

And it's amazing to me

39:01

how polarizing Mitch is. Now

39:03

look, I understand his playoff

39:05

numbers have not been great.

39:08

I completely understand that. But

39:11

I mean he is putting up

39:13

an MVP-like season right now. He

39:15

has been the best player on

39:17

the Leafs this season on a

39:19

team loaded with great players. Those

39:22

types of players don't come available.

39:24

Are you surprised how polarizing Mitch

39:26

Marner is when his name pops

39:28

up just like he did in

39:30

our podcast? Yeah, yes and no,

39:32

because he has, he's such a,

39:34

and he's not just a point

39:37

producer too, that guy kills penalties.

39:39

He is responsible to wait, like

39:41

he is, like, so in some

39:43

ways, I feel sometimes if the

39:45

general public doesn't watch Toronto games

39:47

often, maybe they just go by,

39:50

you know, they point to the

39:52

playoff numbers really, and it's like,

39:54

the ice shrinks, and he doesn't

39:56

have. post-season success, but in my

39:58

eyes, and you know, again, not

40:00

to kind of over blow it

40:03

in some way, but he is

40:05

a Toronto-born kid. He knows how

40:07

important the Maple Leafs are to

40:09

that city. You cannot go to

40:11

a grocery store in Toronto if

40:13

you're Mitch Marner and not get

40:15

bombarded with hockey fans. Whereas in

40:18

Chicago, like, Connor Bedard, for example,

40:20

he can probably go to the

40:22

grocery store and maybe get spotted

40:24

here and there, but they'll let

40:26

him be. You know, they'll say,

40:28

you know, good luck this season,

40:31

whatever, and they'll let Connor be

40:33

for most of them for the

40:35

most part. So I almost feel

40:37

like Marner would thrive in an

40:39

environment like that where he's not

40:41

under a microscope every single play

40:44

off the ice. He can't walk

40:46

his dog without, you know, fans

40:48

stopping him and wondering. And it's

40:50

just, it's constant, it's constant radio

40:52

talk over there too. Like if

40:54

the Leafs go on a three

40:57

game losing streak, it is loud

40:59

over there and they talk about

41:01

it, right? And so in my

41:03

eyes, Mitch Marner in a quieter

41:05

market, not saying Chicago is a

41:07

smaller market, but it's quieter than

41:09

Toronto and any of those big

41:12

Canadian teams. I think he would

41:14

benefit from that. And we've kind

41:16

of seen it too with other

41:18

players when they go to Florida

41:20

or Tampa. It's like, oh, you

41:22

know, they're just thriving because they

41:25

could just play hockey. Yeah. And

41:27

look, at the end of the

41:29

day, I just, anybody that, you

41:31

know, has an issue with him,

41:33

first of all, you gotta divorce

41:35

yourself from the money that, you

41:38

know, like, he's gonna command top

41:40

dollar. And part of. the rationale

41:42

I have here is you've got

41:44

Bedard on his entry level deal

41:46

and you have flexibility that some

41:48

other NHL teams do not have.

41:50

So that's your advantage. You aren't

41:53

a winning club right now, but

41:55

you have more money. So money

41:57

is your strength in this negotiation.

41:59

just say to somebody who says,

42:01

no, thank you. If Mitch Martyr

42:03

was placed on the Blackhawks tomorrow,

42:06

who's the best team on the

42:08

Chicago Blackhawks? who's the best

42:10

player? Mitch Marner. Right. No question.

42:12

Yeah. I mean, maybe eventually Connor

42:14

Bedard is going to be better

42:16

than him, but right now, if

42:19

Mitch joined the Blackhawks, he would

42:21

be the best player on the

42:23

team. Right. And this is going

42:25

to be the interesting situation to

42:27

monitor moving forward as Connor Bedard

42:29

gets into post entry level contract

42:31

and then whatever that next. big

42:34

contract looks like is what is

42:36

the what is the number that

42:38

but what what's Bedard's number going

42:40

to be because I think back

42:42

to all the situations and I'll

42:44

actually tie this into to to

42:46

Mitch Marner in Toronto when Matthews

42:49

and Marner were up at the

42:51

same time Matthews ended up getting

42:53

I'm sorry they I think they

42:55

pursued John Tavares first and they

42:57

gave him 11 million dollars as

42:59

the cap hit. And so when

43:01

they when Tavares signed the 11

43:03

million dollars per year over seven

43:06

years, that was the top money

43:08

that starts like, oh, okay, if

43:10

Tavares is 11, now if you're

43:12

Austin Matthews and if you're Mitch

43:14

Marner, you're saying, hey, I'm just

43:16

as valuable as that. So then

43:18

of course Austin Matthews goes higher

43:21

he goes 11.5 or whatever it

43:23

was and then Mitch Marner the

43:25

negotiations elevated as well because he's

43:27

like well if we're going based

43:29

on that barometer you know it

43:31

was a fascinating it was a

43:33

fascinating conversation at the time because

43:36

the highest paid winger at the

43:38

time was actually Patrick Kane at

43:40

10.5 and so if you're Mitch

43:42

Marner's agent Aaron Ferris He was

43:44

like, Toronto is probably saying, Patrick

43:46

Kane is getting 10.5 million. He's

43:48

the best winger in the NHL.

43:50

We think he should be in

43:53

that or in that ballpark or

43:55

below the 10.5. And Marner's agent

43:57

is probably saying, John Tavares got

43:59

11 million dollars. Austin Matthews is

44:01

11.5. Marner is just as valuable.

44:03

the Leafs as they are. So

44:05

they were negotiating from the $11

44:08

million. And so in some ways,

44:10

I look at how like Sydney

44:12

Crosby has taken significant discounts in

44:14

his career with Pittsburgh. And if

44:16

you wanted to go play with

44:18

Pittsburgh, you're like, well, you're not

44:20

making more than Sid, or if

44:23

you are going to make more

44:25

than Sid, it's going to be

44:27

barely above Sid, which is what

44:29

Latang and Abghani Malkin got, was

44:31

just like a little bit above

44:33

that. And so we saw it

44:35

in Tampa Bay too when Stamco

44:38

signed that long-term contract for $9

44:40

million cap hit. It was like

44:42

any free agent or anyone that

44:44

wanted to come to Tampa Bay.

44:46

It was like, well, that's our

44:48

ceiling. Stamco's is $9 million. He's

44:50

our captain. He's our best player.

44:52

Nobody's exceeding that. whether it's the

44:55

bridge contract or whether it's he

44:57

goes straight to a big contract,

44:59

that's kind of gonna set the

45:01

tone for how the rest of

45:03

the roster is gonna look moving

45:05

forward. Yeah, and I think the

45:07

other number you need to look

45:10

at is percent of cap that

45:12

that player is taking up. And

45:14

because the salary cap has not

45:16

been going up appreciably over the

45:18

last several years, the numbers have

45:20

stayed between that 10 and 12

45:22

million dollar range. Now we're hearing

45:25

it's going to go up appreciably

45:27

more over the next year or

45:29

two. Now again, believe it when

45:31

we see it, we've heard varying

45:33

reports, we heard Gary pump the

45:35

breaks a couple of weeks ago,

45:37

after some reports said it would

45:39

go up, you know, 10 million

45:42

or what have you, over two

45:44

years. that is

45:46

going to benefit the players

45:48

that pop up. It's just

45:50

like the quarterback situation in

45:53

the NFL. You know, is

45:55

DAC the best, you know,

45:57

top quarterback in the league?

45:59

No, but he's getting paid

46:01

that way because his contract

46:04

was up and where the

46:06

prices continue to escalate, you

46:08

rarely see the next quarterback

46:10

up get less money than

46:12

the one that just signed

46:15

before him. So we're probably

46:17

gonna see a similar thing

46:19

once the cap gets a

46:21

little more lofty and a

46:23

little more hardy, you're gonna

46:26

see players. continue to

46:28

push that dollar amount that AAV number up

46:30

up up up and up and you know

46:32

obviously Connor is going to benefit from a

46:34

healthier league when his entry level deal is

46:36

up and when they start renegotiating deal too.

46:38

Yeah for sure and I even think of

46:40

like I look at the Edmonton Oilers right

46:42

now there they haven't won a cup yet

46:44

under McDavid and Dry Sidal and Dry Sidal

46:46

gets that massive new contract. I don't know

46:48

what McDavid's contract is going to look like,

46:50

but it's going to be above that or

46:52

in that same, maybe the identical number. And

46:54

it's like, boy, it's going to be hard

46:56

to win Stanley Cups with those two making

46:58

that amount of money. And because you're going

47:00

to need to find those entry level contracts

47:02

where they're filling in the roster. And I

47:04

also want to say this, that like Chicago,

47:06

it's easy to look at the how the

47:08

Blackhawks won the Stanley Cups and think, oh,

47:10

well, who's going to be the Marian Hosa

47:13

signing? Or who's good? It's like, Marian Hosa

47:15

at that time, he signed a 12-year contract

47:17

to get that AAV down to five and

47:19

a half. and Duncan Keith also had a,

47:21

was it like a 14 year contract or

47:23

something similar? It was like something really long.

47:25

I think it was 12 years, maybe two.

47:27

And so he was playing on a con,

47:29

it's like gone are those days because the

47:31

max now is seven for seven years for

47:33

you FAs and eight years for RFAs that

47:35

are under the same that hold the rights.

47:37

And so it's just really hard to find

47:39

that value and thank the heavens if you're

47:41

a Blackhawks fan looking at the Alex Vlastic

47:43

contract. like, that's already already

47:45

a steal of a of a

47:47

deal for Chicago. So

47:49

that could potentially be

47:51

the deal where you

47:53

look at in a

47:55

couple a years and years

47:57

and you're if they didn't

47:59

have didn't at that

48:01

number, at that number, don't know

48:03

how they would be

48:05

able to make the

48:07

able of the puzzle

48:09

pieces the up higher up work. Well,

48:12

that's gonna that's gonna do

48:14

it for the breakaway podcast

48:16

on CHSN for Charlie Remelius on Pat Boil.

48:18

Thank you for Thank you

48:20

for listening and watching

48:22

and we will catch

48:24

you next time. time.
