1:11

the things that he's gone through both the

1:13

highs and especially the lows of his career

1:15

times that he thought to himself I don't

1:18

know if I want to play football anymore

1:20

2:12

2:14

2:16

2:21

busting with the boys. Bro.

2:26

Ladies and gentlemen, in his

2:28

episode 325 of Bustin' with the

2:30

Boys, we have an outstanding episode for

2:32

you today. Electrostag to

2:34

be here alongside me. Welcome to My

2:36

Name is Taylor One, and we

2:38

are presented by the number one, America's

2:40

number one sportsbook, Vanduul Sports. A

2:44

lot of exciting things in the sports

2:47

betting world. We got playoff hockey right now.

2:49

If you haven't heard, I am now

2:51

a Toronto Maple Leafs fan for the foreseeable

2:53

future. We won the first game versus

2:55

the Senators. Also NFL draft. The boys will

2:57

be there this weekend. It's exciting stuff.

2:59

I think there's some odds. There are. There

3:01

are. If you jump, I mean, yeah.

3:03

Like, look, I think it's it's a lock

3:05

that Cam Ward's going to go first

3:07

over all the Tennessee Titans right now on

3:09

the on the Fando Sportsbook. He's minus

3:11

20 ,000, 20 ,000, minus 20 ,000. Abdul Carter,

3:13

the one who was like also in the

3:15

running to potentially be the first overall

3:17

pick. He's at like he's sitting at like

3:19

plus 3 ,000, I believe. But it is

3:21

ultimately a lock to go, Cam Ward,

3:23

on the Fando Sportsbook. This is fun, boys.

3:25

So let's just say Shudder Sanders. You

3:27

can get on the app. You can project

3:29

guys to go top 10, top five. You

3:32

can build Parley, Shudder Sanders. If you're picking

3:34

him to go top 10, he's at minus

3:36

230 right now. Top five plus 400 is

3:38

Mason Graham gonna be a top five pick.

3:40

That's at minus 145. Ashen Gentie plus 240.

3:43

You can also select the team, who they're

3:45

going to go with in that specific position.

3:47

So for example, the New York Giants sent

3:49

with the number three overall pick. Abdul

3:51

Carter's on the app right now minus

3:53

480 on Fandalsport. Shadr Sanders plus 470. This

3:55

is the fun part. You can build

3:57

out parlays with the players. So you can

3:59

choose like, say Will Campbell, I know.

4:01

he's projected to go to the New England

4:03

Patriots with Vraves, Tyler Warren to tie

4:05

it in at a Penn State to go

4:07

in the top five or top 10.

4:09

You can parley those picks together and build

4:11

out Parleys. There's also shout out to

4:13

boy Chris. He sent out in a little

4:15

parley. Shoulder Sanders to be a top

4:18

10 pick. Jackson Dart to be

4:20

a first round pick. And Amika... Egg Bucca

4:22

egg Bucca to go to be a first

4:24

round pick you can parlay those three together

4:26

And you will get plus 117 odds on

4:28

the Fandall sportsbook app And if I had

4:30

a bus with the boys we like our

4:32

parlays to be in the plus 30 ,000 range.

4:35

We're gonna build we're gonna build a spice

4:37

one We probably will bet all 32 put

4:39

but that in a parlay. That's fun. Oh

4:41

Draft night. Yes Because it is fun because

4:43

for me when I was watching and when

4:45

the Titans were doing relatively well We were

4:47

picking that like 18 to 24 range. It

4:49

was like I'm kind of just

4:51

watching the draft, waiting for my team to pick.

4:54

And then once they pick up, all right,

4:56

time to go to bed. And to go off

4:58

that, like you can go each team and

5:00

select their position. It doesn't have to be the

5:02

exact player. You can say, like, you know,

5:04

yeah, yeah, Jaguars, they're

5:06

going to pick an offensive tackle,

5:08

running back, whatever it is. Like

5:10

that's, it's a fun little game. Shout

5:14

out Chrissy for that parlay. Also, Chrissy had

5:16

a list of information in that email that

5:18

he said that does piss you off a

5:20

little bit. It's Kim Ward's now minus 20

5:22

,000 to be the first overall pick for

5:24

60 times before this cultural season. He

5:26

was plus 2000. And just think to

5:28

yourself, could you imagine if you had

5:30

a crystal ball? Imagine.

5:32

That's why we always play these games like the Would You

5:34

Rather when we had the crazy questions back in the

5:36

day from Mitch Carsley. Like where would you rather like see

5:39

10 minutes in the future or all this stuff? It's

5:41

like, that's where you play the game. Yeah, if you if

5:43

you could just see 10 minutes in the future, could

5:45

you imagine gambling? Yeah, could you

5:47

imagine it wouldn't be gambling? You

5:49

just watch a draft and then like, you know, you

5:51

that's so raving yourself into the future and then come back

5:53

and you're like, OK, yeah, take this person next. Baccarat,

5:56

Jack, player banker. I'll

5:58

tell you right now it's going to be

6:01

player just going this crazy run. Chop, chop,

6:03

chop, chop, chop, chop, chop. Getting after NBA

6:05

playoffs are also going. Will and I put

6:07

parlays. How'd your parlays do? Lost.

6:09

Bank. My guy, you know, we have a guy.

6:12

JJ one. No, we have a guy. We can't say

6:14

the guy. Can't say the guy who sent the

6:16

bet last week. She's got a spontaneous text. Hey,

6:18

go with this parlay. One leg, of course, doesn't,

6:21

doesn't hit one out of the five, I

6:23

believe. Who's died. We see the guy. Can't see

6:25

the guy. Can't see the Tell you after. Tell

6:27

me after. But right now, if you're watching this

6:29

and you're in the dark, I'm also in the

6:31

dark while you're talking with K Adams on a

6:33

parlay also made a JJ Redick parlay. All my

6:35

parlays lost. All of them. I did a parlay

6:37

Friday. I was like, let me just throw my

6:39

hand the ring with this basketball. Not one hit.

6:41

Actually, not one got close. And

6:43

then I took Houston and the Golden Knights, and

6:46

I'm like, I know who Steph Curry is. Let's

6:48

get him now. The Golden Knights? Oh, sorry,

6:50

Golden Wars. I'm a hockey right now,

6:52

boys. Golden State Warriors. a hockey. I'm a

6:54

hockey right now. B

6:56

.A. Golden State Warriors, whatever. Steph Curry,

6:58

he hits five threes. I knew that was lock

7:00

stock and two smoking barrels. Well, he hit that

7:02

in the last couple of minutes. He's hit three.

7:04

Well, I should have watched. And then the Rockets,

7:06

they lose, and then the under hit, and I bet

7:08

the over. Yeah, if you

7:11

think you know how it's all

7:13

going to go down, make those predictions

7:15

pay off with FanDuel and the

7:17

America's number one sports book, FanDuel,

7:33

the official sports betting partner of the

7:35

NBA, the boys, the NFL and

7:37

everything in between. Beautiful

7:40

stuff. I am excited for the draft

7:42

though. Yeah, I am too. It's gonna

7:44

be exciting like it's Mason Graham You

7:46

think he's gonna go top five right

7:48

now? Yeah, I

7:51

mean that could happen Tyler Booker

7:53

will Johnson Tea Book for yes, if

7:55

there's any scouts out there that

7:57

have the opportunity to draft Tyler Booker

8:00

I don't think there's a better

8:02

kid out there. This kid's gonna play

8:04

10, 15 years in the NFL. He's

8:07

gonna be strong, dependable,

8:09

reliable. Really, the only thing holding

8:11

back that kid is injuries. He

8:13

just has, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,

8:15

I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, know, I know, know,

8:17

I I I I know, know. Sorry. I do

8:19

feel like I have a free $1 ,000 bet

8:21

to put this week to put on Shadir.

8:24

because Delaney, the bet we have with Delaney right

8:26

now. It's insane. Yeah. What is it? Top

8:28

two rounds, right? Shoulders just got to go in

8:30

the top two rounds. I win $1 ,000 from

8:32

Delaney because he thought he going to fall

8:34

out of the top two rounds. God love him.

8:36

So I'm going to treat. So

8:39

I'm going to treat like I have like a freebie. Yeah,

8:41

I got some free money to play on. That's a free money. Go

8:43

ahead and rip that up a little bit. I could see him go

8:45

in top five. I could see

8:47

him over there. You got the Giants there. You

8:50

got the Saints there at three and four. Raiders. They're

8:52

out of the top five. Raiders. Raiders,

8:54

I think are seven, I believe and Saints

8:56

are what nine No, no, no, I don't

8:58

know. What was the thing we were just

9:00

looking at before we came in? You

9:03

talking about all the different three is

9:05

the Giants. Yeah Giants are three. I'm

9:07

going that high because it seems like

9:09

Travis Hunter is gonna be a lot

9:11

could go into the Browns Yeah, which

9:13

is Giants are choosing out of yeah,

9:15

there we go. Here we go. Yeah,

9:17

we got our six Titans Browns Giants

9:19

Patriots Jags Raiders. Who's that? Guys,

9:22

you know, you know building the trenches will

9:24

Campbell at LSU. I don't well I think

9:26

if you're gonna pick it forward you want

9:28

to take a tackle you're gonna take that

9:30

kid out of Texas Yeah, yeah, he I

9:32

think he's the number I think he's clearly

9:34

the number one tackle in this draft will

9:36

Campbell he's been There's been some comments about

9:38

though his length of arms as you more

9:40

of a guard Oh the arm length the

9:42

arm length game to me It's the arm

9:44

length game so ridiculous. I didn't have like

9:46

overly long arms, but it's all about using

9:48

the length you have It's all about using

9:50

the length you've got, man. But

9:52

yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You square. Yeah.

9:55

But that's all good. Vrabe wouldn't let me

9:57

on pot return because my arms weren't long enough

9:59

to log out. Yeah. He just he was

10:01

doing that just because your name was Will Compton.

10:03

Yeah. Your ribs like slanted. Vrabe treated you

10:05

that way the way Sugar of Sanders got his

10:07

jersey retired. You know, he just

10:09

did it because a point. He is. He

10:11

is like a tangible. He loves the length.

10:13

Loves the length. Loves. Yeah. Yeah.

10:15

Vrables built like a Neanderthal. Like his he's

10:17

a knuckle draggler. Like his his his arms

10:19

literally go past his knees. He's built to

10:21

play football. Yeah. What'd you think of the

10:23

shooter getting his number retired at Colorado? I

10:26

don't ever want to hate on that because it is

10:28

like I think of myself as like a Michigan

10:30

doesn't really retire numbers. But if they ever were like,

10:32

Hey, we're putting you in our Hall of Fame if

10:34

they don't even know if they have a Hall of

10:36

Fame, I would just be so grateful and so proud

10:38

of that. And to see

10:40

Shadr, it's like, okay, he wasn't an All -American. He

10:43

was big 12 offensive player of the

10:45

year or all big 12, something like that,

10:47

like, which is great, but like a

10:49

lot of everybody has that. So

10:51

there is the nepotism. There is the bias that

10:53

goes involved. But I'm happy for him because it's

10:55

like, that is cool. Now, whether he deserved it

10:57

or not, I don't know, man. Hopefully he has

11:00

an incredible NFL career. And then we all look

11:02

back on it similar to the way Michigan looks

11:04

at Tom Brady, where Tom Brady and he didn't

11:06

have like a Hall of Fame college career. But

11:08

then he goes to the NFL and he's the

11:10

greatest player of all time. Yeah. So there's still

11:12

an opportunity. His story is unwritten, dude. Who sings

11:14

that song? The rest is still unwritten. Natasha

11:17

Bedingfield. I thought it was I did. Staring

11:19

at the blank I did think Dion dropped

11:21

a gem when he was talking. to the

11:23

to the press and talking about Rashawn Salam,

11:25

like how long did it take for him

11:27

to get his number retired? Yeah. And it

11:29

was like, what, 20 something years? Well, how

11:31

long after he died? And it was like

11:33

within one year. And he's like, he enjoys

11:35

guys smelling the flowers. I feel

11:37

like my only issue with the Hall of

11:40

Fame retire in Jersey is because Travis

11:42

Hunter, like that's a shoe in. Yeah,

11:44

you won the Heisman. But it's like, you

11:46

know, there should be like a

11:48

like a protocol, whether it's, you know, in the

11:50

Hall of Fame, you have to be five years. You

11:53

have to be five years before you get

11:55

eligible. Like if they had standards like that, I

11:57

think it would land a lot softer because

11:59

these kids, them getting their jersey retired and getting

12:01

in a hall of fame, like within months

12:03

after playing, I think is, and obviously the last

12:05

thing being Sanders. Yeah. To what? School semesters.

12:07

School semesters not even over. Yeah. Yeah. Very sick

12:09

for the, for Travis and Choudur, like, you

12:11

know, going, going to get on the field and

12:13

getting your number, retiring, getting your name written

12:15

up there so quick. But also it's like, you

12:17

know, there seems to be like no parameters

12:19

because they have how many guys retired overall. six

12:22

total and there's been some great players that come

12:24

out of Colorado, especially in the early nineties when they

12:26

were a very damn good football team. Dave Bacciari?

12:28

Yeah. I mean, he was a fourth or fifth round

12:30

pick though. He's like a lower pick. So he's

12:32

kind of in that similar, I mean,

12:34

it's weird to put him in the

12:36

same category as Tom Brady, but like they

12:38

don't have. the college careers, but they

12:40

had the NFL career. Yeah, is what I'm

12:42

basically trying to say. Because Bach, yeah,

12:45

Bach was a stud, man. He signed multiple

12:47

massive contracts, multiple all pros. Like, dude

12:49

was a fucking stud. It looks fantastic, too.

12:51

Yeah, saw him this weekend at Easter.

12:53

Yeah, he gave me you had just when

12:55

they when you look at the top

12:57

10 quarterbacks to play at Colorado, there's maybe

12:59

one name that you truly like recognize

13:01

from an NFL standpoint and it would be

13:03

cordon stewart. Yeah. But that's about it.

13:05

Number two, Darian Hagan. Sal

13:08

Onisi, Coy Dettmer, Joel

13:11

Klatt, shout out Joel

13:13

Klatt, Bob Anderson, Steffo

13:15

Lioffo, John Hessler,

13:18

all these guys and I'm like, yeah, it

13:20

makes sense. Shadr is probably was the best,

13:22

yeah, college quarterback of the mall, except I

13:24

think the second one you said he was

13:26

one that was playing around 90, like in

13:28

the, he had a really good career at

13:30

Colorado. How does Nebraska's

13:32

Hall of Fame work? I think you

13:34

have to be before you become

13:36

eligible. I want to say it's like

13:39

a There's like a waiting period.

13:41

Maybe five years. Okay, so you're eligible

13:43

Yeah, I'd be eligible. Okay, I

13:45

would rule getting in the what do

13:47

you mean the Nebraska Hall of

13:49

Fame, bro? Yeah Yeah, I get

13:51

I was on the general so you can get put in the Hall

13:53

of Fame for things other than football Do what

13:55

you can put the hall of fame

13:57

for things about impact. Yeah, and you're

13:59

impacting the game. You're making this is

14:01

not truly Please stick with me here.

14:03

Okay, you're making you're making more of

14:05

an impact now than when you play

14:07

Yeah, I would agree. Okay. I don't

14:09

think that could have gone. You just

14:11

never know I don't mean, you're good

14:13

ball player. You're a good ball player.

14:15

Yes. Okay. I meant it as a

14:17

compliment. I just didn't want

14:19

to get that, you know, the blurred

14:21

lines, the grays. I wanted that to

14:23

happen between us right there. So maybe

14:25

it's time for Will Compton. Maybe this

14:27

weekend they surprise you because we'll be

14:29

in Nebraska. Boys will be at the

14:32

draft starting this new thing called the

14:34

two minute drill. That'll be exciting. Got

14:36

ourselves an interview or two lined up.

14:38

Head over day. I'm coming back. I got to

14:40

come back. I got some dad stuff to do

14:43

Friday for my kids They got a little play

14:45

and I'm being back over here And then I'm

14:47

off to Nebraska to see the boys watch people

14:49

just shower will confident love glaze everywhere, dude Just

14:51

the gift of all the hot dogs in that

14:53

woman in the face. That's will confident every time

14:55

we go to Lincoln, dude It is incredible how

14:57

much love this man gets but the spring tour.

14:59

Let's just talk about the spring tour for a

15:01

little bit It's been awesome. Has this been the

15:03

most fun spring we've ever had at Boston with

15:05

the boys? Yeah, this has to be the playbook

15:08

we use with other schools going in the next

15:10

year. Forever and always. Yeah, especially with Oregon. Like

15:12

Michigan was an awesome one. But again, that was

15:14

the week of the spring game. Right. So they're

15:16

a little lighter. Their scheduling was a little different.

15:18

So we didn't have the opportunity to work out

15:20

with the team. However, the strength

15:22

staff baptized us. Oh, yeah. They baptized us. And I'm

15:24

thinking to myself, I might have a bar in

15:26

my back. My knee is to be killing me. I'm

15:28

going to be benching a whole lot of weight,

15:30

whatever it is. It was all functional

15:32

stuff. My back's in hell. My

15:35

back is currently in Talk to me about it.

15:37

You weren't in hell that whole entire workout. Oh, yeah,

15:40

yeah, yeah. I don't know what it is specifically, but

15:42

something I have got to get my

15:44

back corrected, man. And it's bothering me mentally.

15:46

Like I'm sick and tired of being

15:49

sick and tired of my little back. Like

15:51

I have to fix it. Some's

15:53

gotta break. It's painful. It's either gonna be

15:55

you or you're gonna break the back. Yeah. Like

15:57

I feel a sneeze coming on and I'm

15:59

like, I'm scared. Preparing, yeah. What position do I

16:01

get into to where I feel the lightest

16:03

impact? Cause it's like a sharp pain that just

16:06

goes through my like L4 and 5 on

16:08

my right side and it fucking bothers me, man.

16:10

Yeah. Can I tell you

16:12

what the biggest surprise to me was for

16:14

myself in the spring tour so far?

16:16

Yeah, go ahead. When

16:18

we were in Oregon, that kid came up to me and asked

16:20

me for some help and we did some core stuff. First

16:22

off, I had no idea the clip that's on YouTube right now,

16:24

a beginning as much love as it is. But

16:27

there I understand, similar

16:29

to when I watched The Masters, I understand golf

16:31

now. I understand why guys

16:33

coach. Because seeing this kid

16:35

come up and want some information and me being able

16:37

to give him something that I hope he takes

16:39

with him and runs with him, that was a very

16:41

special moment for me. And I loved it. I

16:44

loved it when guys came up and they're like, ultimately,

16:47

curious about my process and how I handled things.

16:49

And it was, it was fucking awesome. Yeah, man.

16:51

It was great. You see why coaches do what

16:53

they do. But I mean, think of yourself as

16:55

like that young kid and you got a three

16:57

time pro bowler coming in, like you want to

16:59

pick their brain. You're trying to figure out what

17:01

questions to ask. Hey, he's working out with us

17:03

right now. Like let me, you know, let me

17:05

get out in front of the boys and pull

17:07

them aside. Yeah, and he's way

17:09

more open and curious than I was at

17:11

his age. He's a freshman, yeah. He's a

17:13

freshman. Just got there. He was early in

17:15

Roli. That's awesome. From Florida. And

17:18

yeah, I mean, I remember being a freshman and

17:20

there would be some guys that would come in. I

17:22

can't remember his name. He was literally at Michigan

17:24

when we were there, but he played tackle. He was

17:26

from Georgia, went to Michigan. He would play for

17:28

the Detroit Lions for 10 years. He would come in

17:30

all the time, kind of do rehab and stuff

17:32

like that in Ann Arbor. And I always

17:34

wanted to pick his brain, but never did. Jake

17:36

Long will be around once and while he was always

17:38

around, but I never paid his brain because I

17:40

was just kind of like more in awe than I

17:42

was like, I'm gonna try to get something out

17:44

of them. I think I tried to be a friend

17:46

more than I tried to be like a mentee. And

17:48

so to me, it was just super

17:50

cool that these guys are curious. Like Michigan

17:53

was very similar, but Oregon, I would

17:55

say more. That offensive line group were like

17:57

very interested in my process, how I

17:59

went about things. I was much more vocal

18:01

in the meeting rooms of Michigan because

18:03

the coaches were asking me questions. But

18:05

it was it was awesome to be a part

18:08

of. Yeah, mine was a Barrett Rood. Barrett Rood

18:10

would come around. He'd like work out with the

18:12

team in the off season. And he like taught

18:14

me how to watch film, taught me about his

18:16

process, how he breaks down, how he how he

18:18

compartmentalizes it on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. So

18:20

that was like getting to see that it

18:22

like reminds it just as you as a player

18:24

as a young player and wanting to get

18:26

knowledge from these cats because Barrett Rood was a

18:28

stud at Nebraska and in the league. But

18:32

yeah, it's cool to think about. Of

18:34

any linebacker and any offensive tackle, who would

18:36

you guys want to spend the day

18:38

with? While you're playing, who's the one guy

18:40

you'd want to be? Want

18:42

to be or want to spend time with? Spend time

18:44

with to learn from. Ray Lewis.

18:47

I'll say like any time I was driving to workouts in

18:49

the morning, I always had like Ray Lewis speeches on. I

18:53

got to see him speak one time. But

18:55

I'd say Ray Lewis, I mean, dude did

18:57

it at the highest level for all of

18:59

what, 16, 17 years. He was like the

19:01

baddest man on the football field. God

19:03

don't make mistakes. Yeah. Yeah.

19:06

That's a really difficult question for me because the person I

19:08

looked up to the most was Jake Long. Jake

19:11

Long's career, I mean, he

19:13

ended up getting a lot of injuries in the

19:15

NFL. So it was very difficult for him

19:17

to like show off how much talent he actually

19:19

had. mean, the guy was, he made three

19:21

Pro Bowls in a row in his first three

19:23

years. Like he is. an insane talent that

19:25

was only plagued by he's a hall of fame

19:27

guy that was just injured a bunch but

19:29

we were much different play styles like I was

19:31

more bendy and uh probably a little more

19:33

yeah more athletic he was stronger and understood technique

19:35

a little bit better I think if I

19:37

was going to spend time with a guy and

19:39

I would honestly want to ask you about

19:41

that before is probably Trent Williams because we did

19:43

we were we were like similar in a

19:45

lot of ways of like how we decided to

19:47

play, he was much stronger, much more powerful.

19:49

But from a movement standpoint, very similar. It's interesting

19:51

to hear you talk about like technique and

19:53

everything else. Like, I feel like Ray would always

19:55

talk about the game so much. Like, I

19:57

was always gravitating towards the guys who you'd see

19:59

on film, like on YouTube, whatever it is,

20:01

and kind of talking about the game with Ed

20:03

Reed, because I was just so

20:05

interested. It's like, how do these motherfuckers like

20:07

break the game down at such a level

20:09

to where, you know, you technique and all

20:11

that stuff's part of it. But I don't

20:13

think technique wise for a linebacker is as involved

20:16

as like, say an offensive tackle. Yeah, it

20:18

seems like you guys are, you guys are seeing

20:20

what the formation is, what the motion is,

20:22

and basically playing, playing like process elimination of what

20:24

this play could possibly be. And it's reading

20:26

and reacting. Yeah. We do a lot of re

20:28

-reacting postsnap. But like for me, I

20:31

was always under the thought process that if

20:33

I'm, if I lose, it's because I did something

20:35

wrong, not cause they did something right. Like

20:37

people can have great rushes and do a bunch

20:39

of amazing things, but like. If my feet

20:41

are correct, if my hands are correct, if my

20:43

angle's correct, I cannot lose. And

20:45

so when I hear, like a couple of weeks ago, we

20:47

had Luke Keekley on, if you guys are watching for the first

20:49

time, you can go watch that incredible episode. You

20:52

guys, listen, you guys break down film. For

20:54

me, it was just identifying, you

20:56

know, the coaches would give me, hey, when they're

20:58

in this formation, the safety's over this way, look

21:00

for this blitz, that blitz, whatever. So you

21:02

knew when there was like movement going on, but

21:05

it was really just identifying like, what's this guy's

21:07

fastball? And then now I'm evaluating to myself, okay,

21:09

is his best, Against my best

21:11

because I'll take my best, but if it highlights

21:13

one of my weaknesses Okay, I need to

21:15

now equalize the playing field of being like I

21:17

need to get him off his game So

21:19

if it's a power guy, I was always concerned

21:21

about power because it's like you know, I

21:23

was fast and twitchy when I came to like

21:25

just, you know, sitting on a bolt. That

21:27

was my most difficult thing. So I need to

21:29

jump this guy and set up different angles.

21:31

So now mentally we're both playing this game of

21:33

whose confidence is higher in moments. So if

21:35

I can jump this guy a couple of times,

21:37

set him differently, use my hands differently and

21:39

winning those battles, I know mentally his in a

21:41

different spot than mine is. Now my confidence

21:43

a little bit higher. So there was always about

21:45

finding that guy and seeing what he was

21:47

best at and taking that away first. And with

21:49

the film stuff, it was like linebackers essentially

21:51

handle things the same. If they're fast, twitchy guys,

21:53

they're going to try to up and under

21:55

you. They're big, powerful guys, like fucking buckle your

21:57

pin, chin strap and get ready to get

21:59

him out of the chin. Keep your feet moving.

22:01

And so I never was like a student

22:03

of the game that way. It was always just

22:05

like identifying the individual battles. Yeah. Yeah. But

22:07

it's awesome to listen to you guys talk about

22:09

it. Just talking about coverages and him like

22:11

peeling off of cover two and all that and

22:13

listening to the way you're breaking down it.

22:15

It's like, it's. such a part of the game

22:17

that maybe I didn't do as much, so

22:19

it's just fun to listen to. Yeah, it's like

22:21

as a backer too, like you're always trying

22:23

to identify like how is the offense trying to

22:25

beat you and like when Luke's in there

22:27

talking like which offensive lineman's going to be blocking

22:29

you because you if you can you want

22:31

to have every angle or be the fastest to

22:33

the first step because when you're going into

22:35

the line of scrimmage like you guys are much

22:37

bigger than us. They're always trying to like

22:39

find those edges of when emotions happening, when a

22:41

formation's going on, always trying to figure out

22:43

like how an offense is trying to beat you

22:45

so you can have the faster first step.

22:47

And just listen to Luke and even off Ray

22:49

Lewis, like I went and spent time with

22:51

London Fletcher and London talked about the game in

22:53

such a way. I remember when I was

22:55

a rookie in London had the keys to do

22:57

whatever we want. Like if you wanted to

22:59

check out of a defense similar to what Thomas

23:01

Davis and Luke Keekley were doing, like having

23:03

the coaching staff have that much confidence in you

23:05

that you were seeing the game good enough.

23:07

that it's like, hey, if he sees something and

23:09

he's checking something, let him do it. Like

23:12

I was always fascinated with like, how do you

23:14

get there? Like when I was in a

23:16

cold tub and I'd be asking London, like why

23:18

are you checking, why are you checking in

23:20

a cover two in these situations? But like trying,

23:22

it's like. Always the game within the game

23:24

and trying to be one step ahead on how

23:26

offense is trying to beat you because they

23:28

know what they're running and you're just having to

23:30

you're trying to put yourself in the best

23:32

position to like have the quickest first step and

23:34

beat them to a spot. Yeah. So I

23:36

always, I always love that stuff. I feel like

23:38

Ray always had a lot of things on

23:40

YouTube to at least you would hear him talking

23:42

about it. So when Barrett would come in

23:44

and talk about playing the linebacker position and talking

23:46

about breaking down film study and everything else,

23:48

I was just always so fascinated because in the

23:50

weight room, you're always going to be trying

23:52

to chase those edges to get the 1 %

23:54

better, whether in speed, jumping, quickness, your

23:56

physicality like 5 pounds. Yeah. But like, are

23:58

the, what are those little things that can

24:00

kind of give you a step up? Like

24:02

when you're on the field to where you're

24:04

kind of anticipating everything versus just reacting to

24:06

it. Yeah. It's so interesting. You ever, you

24:08

ever see on like Instagram when there's like

24:10

the, someone did a drawing and they started

24:13

zooming out and then all of a sudden

24:15

that drawings inside of a cat's eye and

24:17

it's in kind of a universe. It's like

24:19

insane the amount of depth and level. Yeah,

24:21

I was talking to my dad after the

24:23

Easter Party after LeWon Easter Bash 2025 Just

24:26

about the base of the conversation we're having

24:28

now and how many different levels there are like

24:30

there's 22 guys in the field at one

24:32

time And if you sit there as an office

24:34

like okay, I can understand the concept of

24:36

what's happening here. I know the back's track I

24:38

know Relatively if this is a longer route

24:40

shorter intermediate whatever whatever it is and then you

24:42

go into a little bit Okay, what's the

24:44

offensive line doing here? And then you can get

24:46

a zoom in a little bit more about

24:48

okay? What's the center's job here? And then the

24:50

tackles up and you start to realize all

24:52

the little games of chess Yeah, that are happening

24:54

while 11 guys are trying to do the

24:56

same thing to help each other And that is

24:58

why football really is the best. Yeah, because

25:00

it is awesome. There's so many levels to this

25:02

shit. It's just crazy. It's not even thinking

25:04

about the defensive side. Like everyone's also doing their

25:06

11 things. You know, if this guy goes

25:08

inside and does this, you have to cover this

25:10

gap. just, it's fucking awesome. Yeah.

25:12

And so like going into these, these

25:15

schools and being able to do what we

25:17

were doing is just great. I mean,

25:19

we talked about it last week at Oregon,

25:21

but like. If you haven't watched that

25:23

vlog, check out the Oregon vlog. It's one

25:25

of our favorites we've ever done. Michigan was great

25:27

too. I think the only thing they got in the

25:29

way with us with Michigan was their scheduling. They

25:31

had the spring game coming up. So these guys were

25:33

kind of like, deloading. They're on the back and

25:35

they got finals the next week. Oregon

25:37

was very much Jake's still in their

25:39

process of like, you know, implementing

25:42

like installation, doing the workouts, all

25:44

that stuff. We got there, what was it?

25:46

Tuesday last week? Tuesday or Wednesday? Yeah.

25:48

We got there Tuesday. got there Tuesday. Their

25:51

spring game Saturday. So their last

25:53

like, it was kind of their last real practice

25:55

before they split up into their maze and blue

25:57

groups. And it was just, it was

25:59

a little bit different. But the access, I was

26:01

impressed with the access because Oregon really opened it

26:03

up to where we walked away. And I looked

26:05

at the boys, I was like, I don't know

26:07

if. Michigan's gonna give us this. Like

26:10

that was an insane amount of access.

26:12

It was awesome. Landing is a homie, bro.

26:14

Landing is an absolute homie. But I

26:16

mean, even after practice at Michigan, like it's

26:18

you, me, Abloh, the boys, Sean,

26:20

and we're all just basically telling

26:23

terrible stories about me the whole time.

26:25

Top five. Top five. Isn't that

26:27

crazy? five, bro. It hurts, man. It

26:29

has to hurt. It doesn't,

26:31

it doesn't. So, top five, JP

26:33

explain the top five. Yeah, explain top five.

26:35

Top five. Dave Abeloff has been at

26:37

Michigan for how long? Like 25 plus years.

26:39

He's essentially the director of media relations.

26:41

So, anything that goes down with Michigan, he's

26:43

the guy that gets reached out to

26:45

and he has to handle it. So, we

26:47

were asking him, or I

26:49

don't even know if we asked him. No,

26:51

Dave, Dave a couple of times, like

26:54

made a... like comments like oh, I thought

26:56

I'd be done worrying about Taylor keeps

26:58

saying the gift that keeps on getting Making

27:00

those types of comments, which like you

27:02

you laugh at but I'm thinking of myself

27:04

like bro I won like I won

27:06

that bad It was you know, there's a

27:08

couple of instances and those exchanges get

27:10

us sparked to ask Dave like so where's

27:12

Taylor right? So after practice problem. We're

27:15

all seeing a circle and it's like us

27:17

big Corms run more and Dave and

27:19

I don't know who was it you Who

27:21

asked the question? I might have. Yeah,

27:23

but I should say we'll ask the question

27:25

like how bad was Taylor? And

27:27

then he goes, I mean, you guys, I don't

27:29

feel like I'll talk about myself. Yeah. He says

27:31

that was top. We were up by Coach Moore's

27:33

office when he came out. Maybe

27:35

JP asked like where's Taylor rank. Maybe

27:37

and basically Dave was like he's probably

27:39

top five. Yeah top five. What what

27:42

and then the very first There's already

27:44

two different versions of it where Taylor

27:46

thought one thing happened and David was

27:48

like oh Arizona though Arizona Bowl He's

27:50

where the bus left him. And he's

27:52

like, well, do you remember how that

27:54

trip started? The bus did leave me.

27:56

And I think he bent the knee

27:58

to that. No, well, he goes, well,

28:00

do you remember how that trip started? Actually,

28:03

he was crazy. He brought that up. And I did

28:05

not remember that. We can we can talk about like

28:07

that's all that's all news. Like, yeah, this was your

28:09

brother's fault. No, I still

28:11

blame the kid. These dudes were 29 years

28:13

old. This is the oldest thing. My 18

28:15

year old brother. So I came in and

28:17

yeah, I hit the kid. I did what

28:19

people says. I did my senior year after

28:22

the Ohio State game. They

28:25

didn't hear about it They didn't hear about

28:27

it. Obviously me being dumb and 21 years old,

28:29

I'm like, I'm not going to tell them

28:31

this happened. Yeah. And then we land in Arizona.

28:33

And I guess Dave Abloff's phone starts going off

28:36

like the headline. Yeah. The headlines. Taylor One

28:38

hit this Ohio State fan after the house state

28:40

game, which we did lose 42 41. That

28:42

was like the most painful loss of all

28:44

time. He said they sat you. They brought

28:46

you sat me in. I lied. Taylor saying he

28:48

didn't do I didn't. I said my brother

28:50

did it at first. Hey, put up the

28:52

video on him. Yeah. And

28:55

I ended up telling the truth. Yeah, but they did

28:57

leave me after the Buffalo Wild Wings game. They

29:00

left me after that. But some of

29:02

the stories, man. And as we're sitting

29:04

there in Al Glick Fieldhouse and then

29:06

like story after story is happening, I'm

29:08

having to explain the story. I'm

29:11

thinking to myself, God damn, maybe I am

29:13

top five. Maybe I really

29:15

was taught by medics. the stories are

29:17

diabolical. Diabolical. I loved

29:19

Blake's reaction to hearing all the stories because

29:21

he's like smiling and kind of just

29:23

in awe of like kind of like how

29:25

the heck did you do this while

29:27

you were here? Yeah. He said three times

29:30

while y 'all were just talking like off

29:32

the back he's like top five. I

29:34

like that because you know Blake

29:37

was probably the craziest person to

29:39

deal with. The freshman year dorms

29:41

with Craig Rowe was probably the

29:43

worst one. Yeah. Yeah.

29:46

Yeah. We don't. We don't. Anyway, you know, it's

29:48

weird. It's like, I didn't think it was that

29:50

bad. I didn't think it was that bad that

29:52

I'm telling that story. I'm thinking, oh, my God,

29:55

I turned the camera off. Did you really? Yeah.

29:57

We don't to put this out there for Taylor.

29:59

Yeah. what great times,

30:01

though. That's great. Hey, high production. High

30:04

production. Maintenance was there, I guess. Yeah.

30:06

I made the most. Those were great.

30:09

I also love Will and Blake Corum's

30:11

rivalry that they have. It's beautiful. It's

30:13

also like four zero Blake. It

30:17

really is, man. It

30:19

really is. And you see it. is up on me.

30:21

He's up on me so high. I have to just

30:23

walk by my sideline shoulder and feel like that's a

30:25

dub. Like, yeah, yeah. Dude. And then, yeah, I mean,

30:27

you kind of didn't want to do a one on

30:29

one against him either. It wasn't that I didn't want

30:31

to do a one -on -one against Blake. It truly wasn't

30:33

that. You heard me talking about my back just a

30:35

few minutes ago. Right, and I knew you were feeling

30:37

fine at this time, but go ahead. I wasn't feeling

30:39

fine on the field. I was like, bro, I'll have

30:41

to do a full warm -up because we were staying

30:43

like at Oregon. It was, hey, the next morning, you

30:46

know, get the body right. I'm like ready to

30:48

go because it's early in practice. It's early enough

30:50

in practice. This one, we were there

30:52

all day long. Like, we fly out early

30:54

in the morning, we're doing that workout,

30:56

which by the way, they absolutely crushed us in

30:58

that workout. It was my shoulders, I felt

31:00

like I had a chest cold after workout. my

31:02

bicep for going to tear. And

31:05

then we're standing at practice all day

31:07

long, like, we were out there on the

31:09

field for what, three, four hours? Yeah.

31:11

Before it's like, hey. Yeah. Yeah, like think

31:13

about the pre -practice. I know. Like an

31:15

hour before practice started. Right. And

31:17

so it's just you feel the swelling coming

31:19

on like you I would have had to do

31:21

an entire like program just to get ready

31:23

for this one -on -one, but But the prices was

31:25

two hours an hour in I did come

31:27

up to you And I was like hey, we

31:29

should get ready for you to do the

31:31

thing about 30 or 40 minutes What happened? What

31:34

was going on though? They were playing they

31:36

were doing the move the ball situation. I did

31:38

want to see Bryce Underwood like play Yeah,

31:40

like he was going out there and he looked

31:42

insane Yeah, he was on. And then you

31:44

guys just said they're talking shit about Nebraska. He

31:46

said they were 20th. And they're talking shit

31:48

because he was moving ball. He was five for

31:50

five. Yeah, he was moving the ball. Getting

31:52

the ball out so fast. And I'm like, eh,

31:54

he does look nice. And get little nervous.

31:56

And then he throws his pick to shout out

31:58

Nico. He throws a pick to the safety

32:00

lock on. Then right when he throws a pick

32:02

right after they were talking shit, I was

32:04

like, hey, you guys were saying something about Nebraska?

32:06

Yeah. Just perfect timing. Yeah, but he was

32:08

lighting it up. And there was a couple of

32:10

times he had like a a

32:13

zone read type of situation. He should have

32:15

pulled it because the end crashed inside and you

32:17

see him like gonna do in the chest

32:19

thing. We were basically doing the same thing to

32:21

Bryce. What is we did at the Colorado,

32:23

Nebraska game with Dylan Rayola? Like helping

32:25

up his offensive linemen. He's doing the things,

32:27

taking a knee in the huddle. He's looking

32:29

around. You just see this guy. Commanding the

32:31

huddle. This guy's confidence is insane. And then

32:33

he has the stats and everyone's like, this

32:35

kid struggles in the spring game. It's like,

32:37

dude. I did see that. I did see

32:39

that. Like, you know, I guess game game

32:41

reps are a little bit different to practice.

32:43

Spring game, bro. Like, they're probably just like,

32:45

hey, God, there's another pink. Yeah.

32:48

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 88

32:50

yards. There was a Instagram post. I don't

32:52

know which one. It was one of

32:54

the football college football ones. They're like, you

32:56

know, number one overall recruit struggles in

32:58

spring game. Is Michigan going to have more

33:00

quarterback woes this upcoming season? Most liked

33:02

comment was Bryce Underwood. And it's just a

33:04

bunch of cry. Laffy faces. Like

33:07

that and I'm just I'm in

33:09

a parking lot of Target just like

33:11

this motherfucker's got the confidence articles

33:13

got a point y 'all do Y 'all

33:15

should clear y 'all should clear the

33:17

air though cuz Bryce was getting

33:20

a lot of hate for the photo

33:22

we put up What was your

33:24

first reactions when you saw him? Specimen.

33:26

Yeah specimen. Oh, that's he looks

33:28

like a leaner Cam Newton Like

33:30

yeah, he is I mean cam was people

33:33

are talking about his gut That's the most

33:35

it's one of the more athletic looking guts

33:37

that you will find like ever the internet's

33:39

reaction to this photo It was blowing my

33:41

mind because I'm like and people are really

33:43

seeing it that way. Yeah, cuz he is

33:45

he's all of six six I don't know

33:47

how much he weighs, but the dude he's

33:49

17 years old 17 and

33:52

seeing them. I know it's a very small

33:54

thing, but seeing them one hand those one hand

33:56

those footballs, bro I mean dudes are chucking

33:58

it like 30 yards and he's just snatching on

34:00

the air The ball was coming to you

34:02

that don't worry about that. Yeah, I'm filming and

34:04

the ball is like coming in kind of

34:06

hot He's I don't even worry about it and

34:08

then I'm like I'm gonna worry about it.

34:10

Yeah, I like get out the way He just

34:12

plucks it out of the air looks it

34:14

he must Chris Bryant Chris was just

34:16

like walking towards us back to the

34:18

ball and this is like in the far

34:21

left of my camera frame where I

34:23

was filming somebody else and this is just

34:25

going on on the side and Bryce

34:27

jumps up reaches over with his right hand

34:29

comes back over one hand I'm like

34:31

Yeah, dude. I tell you what, same man.

34:33

If he's a baller on Saturdays, like

34:35

the offense will be extremely fun to watch.

34:37

I'll say this because he's not a

34:39

baller on Saturdays. It's not because of him.

34:41

It's because of whatever scheme they have

34:43

around him because he's athletic enough. You have

34:45

got to be able to move the

34:47

ball. That is that's a fantastic point because

34:49

college football, you that amount of athleticism,

34:51

you can Johnny Manziel. Right. I mean, you

34:53

can get away at Auburn. They

34:55

were always winning like 10 games. Guy could

34:57

not throw the ball to save his life, but

34:59

that offense was schemed up so well around

35:01

him. Yeah. And it's like Bryce is a lot

35:04

better than Nick Marshall. Well, it really impresses

35:06

me about this kid. He's an

35:08

elbow player. I mean, he was the first guy

35:10

out there. He was the first guy taking snaps,

35:12

throwing the ball. He was working 30 minutes before

35:14

practice even started. His dad's at

35:16

practice. His first off. the dad, him

35:18

and his sister all, they looked the exact same.

35:20

They looked the exact same. I'm like talking to

35:22

the dad and the sisters like fake dribbling in

35:24

the back, like dunking on her dad the whole

35:26

time. But I'm like, Hey, like, we don't talk

35:28

about his work ethic. And he's like, we brought

35:30

up the money. And his dad's like, he has

35:32

always said he wants to afford the opportunity to

35:35

work. And he's like, the money is just more

35:37

of an opportunity to get work. And he's like,

35:39

last night he was at this one place with

35:41

a private quarterback coach from 11 to one. He

35:43

woke up at seven, did X, Y, and Z.

35:45

He's like, just - Are the coaching

35:47

staff talks about him being in the film room for

35:49

hours at a time? Hours. And so, sounds

35:51

like this kid's, it sounds, as

35:54

even as a Michigan fan, it sounds too good to be

35:56

true. Like, what's this? This kid, they're saying

35:58

all the right things. He's doing all the right stuff.

36:00

And it's just like, what can he

36:02

do? I mean, he's got to

36:04

come see us in Lincoln. I don't know if

36:06

y 'all saw you there. Well, we'll see you.

36:08

He gifted his high school like CEO officer,

36:10

like a brand new car, which I mean, if

36:12

you're a 17 year old gifted like your

36:15

security guard from your high school car, kids got

36:17

a good head on the shoulders. And they

36:19

were saying he was in the facility too, like

36:21

3am the day before. and then came back

36:23

yeah and then then came back at 7 a

36:25

.m so when we were doing the crossbar challenge

36:27

he's like we were talking about the workout

36:29

we were doing how we're kind of hurting he's

36:31

like yeah i got mine at 5 a .m

36:33

i'm thinking all right it's a weird flex

36:35

like to say on us but yeah that's impressive

36:37

jack how did that make you feel seeing

36:39

somebody gifted a truck This

36:44

feels nasty now Yeah,

36:46

it's cool. It's cool to

36:48

see a guy who

36:50

cares about his people, you

36:52

know Yeah, 17, you

36:54

know, just running it out

36:56

man. So I was

36:58

happy for him We

37:00

interrupt this episode because we are brought to

37:02

you by neutral vodka seltzer. Have you

37:04

tried neutral? If not, you are missing out.

37:06

Neutral is so much better than any

37:08

other seltzer I've tried. It's made with real

37:10

vodka and real juice. That's what makes

37:12

it delicious. Neutral comes in a

37:14

variety of flavors, pineapple and watermelon, just to

37:16

name a couple of my favorite. They

37:19

also have new flavors, lime and strawberry. Neutral

37:21

is the perfect drink to bring when hanging

37:23

out with friends and it is such a

37:25

crowd pleaser whether you're watching at a bar

37:27

in the backyard with friends or at a

37:29

tailgate. drink neutral,

37:31

neutral. Keep it tasty. The

38:01

40s and free agents podcast on

38:03

the I heart radio app apple

38:05

podcast or wherever you get your

38:07

podcasts Niko Niko found a home.

38:09

You happy for him? Who?

38:13

You seen that video that Tennessee

38:15

fan walking in trick -fil -a?

38:17

He's like no Polynesian sauce That

38:19

is funny as hell dude

38:21

Yeah, he's back and he's back

38:23

home. He's back in California.

38:25

I think it's the comical, at

38:27

least to say that he

38:29

goes from a state with zero

38:31

state income tax to the

38:34

state with potentially the highest state

38:36

income tax making less money,

38:38

going to a college with less

38:40

talent, a way worse offense,

38:42

but good luck. Good luck. I

38:45

know fired the boy up right there. Fired him

38:47

up. He is in the big 10. We gotta

38:49

see him this year. We gotta see him. No

38:51

matter what, he is a hell of a player.

38:53

Hell of a player. But I mean, this the

38:55

next movie he makes, it's all ball from this

38:57

point on. He's got to

38:59

right some rocks. And not that

39:01

it wasn't all ball. I'm just the magnifying glass

39:03

that will now be on him since he this

39:05

situation is kind of going to be the example

39:07

of college football when he does become draft eligible

39:09

like this will be something that's peeled apart and

39:11

picked apart. Yeah. So wherever he is now or

39:13

being at UCLA now you hope that it's all

39:15

it's all ball from this point on because he's

39:17

got to know that that magnifying glass is going

39:19

to be. Oh yeah it's going to be all

39:22

eyes on him but yeah it'll be exciting to

39:24

watch especially those first few games Tennessee fans are

39:26

going to be. Tuned in was Tennessee

39:28

gonna do a quarterback. We're still very now.

39:30

We got two guys right now in the

39:32

roster. No one's been Contacted

39:34

as of right now for anyone coming

39:36

in but we'll see it's scary.

39:38

I mean, it's yeah, cuz I mean

39:40

he is like Nico Yeah, he

39:42

looks the part he looks the part

39:44

and he looks like an athlete.

39:46

Oh, yeah, you don't think so JP

39:48

I Know you got a I

39:50

got I know you got your cat

39:52

out of South Carolina But

39:55

you see Nico, like he can throw the ball

39:57

around when he puts his foot in the ground, he

39:59

can run. So I saw

40:01

UCLA, like I've had all the takes on

40:03

Nico, and then I'm thinking, oh yeah, we

40:05

gotta play UCLA this year. It

40:08

is a home game. It's different

40:10

playing in Lincoln, man. Do

40:12

we really? I thought we'd go to

40:15

UCLA. UCLA beat us when we were

40:17

in Memorial last year. Yeah,

40:19

USC, USC will be at home. We

40:22

need that home crowd. Yeah,

40:25

like UCLA got better getting Nico

40:27

on board. Yeah, we'll figure

40:29

it out. Yeah, yeah, we'll figure it out. Yeah,

40:31

he was a beer, right? Yeah, we are. Yeah,

40:34

we got a squad. We

40:36

don't got just really like we got a

40:38

squad. Well, you know, I was watching the local

40:40

presser last week. He's like, he's been waiting

40:42

for a team like this. Oh, yeah. Yeah. What?

40:44

It got me right. It got me hype. Saturday

40:47

will be there. Do you have any idea what

40:49

to expect from the spring game? Because it's not really

40:51

a spring game. No, no. So I think they've

40:54

pivoted a little bit now that the NCAA has put

40:56

in that new rule. If you can only carry

40:58

like 105 on the roster, he'll be doing something and

41:00

Michigan was kind of doing it too. But

41:02

to where a lot of those guys it'll

41:04

be bubble guys are trying to like earn their

41:06

way into training camp So they will be

41:08

having like a scrimmage for like guys to show

41:10

talent and have film to send out everywhere

41:12

else because they're you know, they're cutting down to

41:14

the 105 So guys are gonna have to

41:16

like make rosters. So he's kind of treating it

41:18

like a they only have three in the

41:20

NFL, right? Yeah, yeah, fourth third preseason game. Yeah.

41:22

Yeah, but no, I don't know what to

41:25

expect I'm sure they'll have elements of both to

41:27

where they'll have a scrimmage But

41:29

I have no clue what to expect. Oh,

41:31

team captain. Yeah, but

41:33

even this, I don't even know if

41:35

that's going down anymore. Just because they kind

41:37

of pivoted early last week. Yeah, they're

41:39

changing it. Yeah, they're changing the layout a

41:41

little bit. Had enough swivel, boys. Give

41:44

me a fun time in Lincoln. Stars vs.

41:46

the legends. Well, it sounds like

41:48

they're not doing that or they might not be

41:50

this was what they were doing. They were

41:52

going to do something. And I don't even know

41:54

what was going to take place with the

41:56

Stars vs. Legends thing. But just off last week,

41:58

like I haven't had much communication with Nebraska

42:00

on what exactly is going down this weekend. What

42:02

year is that right there? Freshman year. I

42:04

had that neck. Yeah. That's Echler in the background.

42:07

Yeah. I see him giving you little flowers

42:09

too. Yeah. Yeah. Come on now. Yeah. That's

42:11

nice. Played a crucial role

42:13

in getting that out of tennis out of Tennessee. to

42:16

Nebraska. No, it was no, you

42:18

know, he just happened to be at Tennessee. Disgusting.

42:22

You have influence in this college

42:24

football world like that, because

42:26

that's cool. But that clears the

42:28

hell of a special teams coach another thing

42:30

from a spring tour that I've noticed is how

42:32

important special teams coaches are like the enthusiasm

42:35

that needs to be in the room to keep

42:37

guys involved in what's going on because we

42:39

sat in a couple of rooms and it was

42:41

like I've never really been in special teams

42:43

meetings. Yeah, I'm the eyelid number to will at

42:45

one point on this shit is fucking boring

42:47

Like yeah, you run down Yeah,

42:49

I mean, you run

42:51

down, you got a lane, like stay

42:53

in that lane. Yeah. Yeah. Take

42:55

it easy. We've only been to a

42:57

couple of schools. People can figure

42:59

out. No, I know. But there's

43:01

no an ex enthusiast that he has.

43:03

I'm sure his rooms are ex God

43:05

in the entire time. Hell of a

43:07

recruiter. Yeah. I wasn't taken away from

43:09

that. Yeah. Yeah. I could see how

43:11

that was bad. Listen, I was

43:13

bored because the shit just seemed like it just run

43:15

down the field. Yeah, I

43:17

mean there's it's like there's more it's more

43:19

drill essential stuff than it is like

43:21

Exodos on special I feel like it's such

43:23

an unutilized part of the game. Just

43:25

watch it. I mean a man like guys

43:27

that part of the game matters Yeah,

43:29

it matters a lot. Yeah, but the third

43:32

or third thing's a little crazy. Yeah,

43:34

that's crazy. It is It is

43:36

cool though. I saw that interview that

43:38

acted and I that is I was

43:40

his very first recruit Which is awesome.

43:42

Yeah, he would like give me

43:44

an envelope And I'll be thinking in

43:46

my head like, oh, snap, what's about

43:49

to happen? I'd open it up

43:51

and it'd be like a stick of gum with another that said

43:53

there's more where that came from. That's

43:56

what sold you. That

43:58

is funny. Yeah.

44:00

That is awesome. X the man, though.

44:02

It seems like he's doing well out there. This is

44:04

going to be a fun week. Anytime you go

44:06

to Nebraska, man, they treat you right. They treat you

44:08

right out there. Are you guys still Adidas? I

44:11

think so, yeah. Yeah, he

44:13

does has been up enough though JP

44:15

knows what I'm talking about shoes Best

44:17

shoes in the game. He won't have

44:19

to trade his shoes out there He's

44:22

gonna be leveling up out there Maybe

44:24

what else we got boys. What's we

44:26

got going on? Titans taking

44:28

cam ward NBA what what

44:30

guy in the draft do

44:32

you think will have the

44:34

best NFL career and early

44:36

prediction for it? Will Johnson

44:38

Yeah, I don't know that's

44:40

a good question Tyler Booker

44:43

Yeah, fair point dude. It's it's tough because it's

44:45

like like book we got to be around

44:47

him So you kind of know his mental you

44:49

kind of know his approach of the game

44:51

and not just the game but off the field

44:53

I mean, we know it's like guys like

44:55

that who are gonna last last the longest. Yeah

44:57

Yeah, and he understands like the fans. I'm

44:59

excited to see Tyler Warren in the NFL. I

45:01

think he's gonna be a be tight end.

45:03

Yeah Penn State Yeah, he seems like he can

45:05

do it all. Yeah, you can play any

45:07

position. You got a there's you guys got a

45:09

cat out of Michigan, right love Oh,

45:12

yeah, Colson Loveland. Yeah, he is a stud.

45:14

That's a guy that his draft stock probably fell

45:16

a little bit because the quarterback play was

45:18

below par last year. We actually had quarterback turned

45:20

off. We just handed the ball off for

45:22

12 games. But he's a cat

45:25

that can he can block. He can run

45:27

routes. He's he's a guy that he's

45:29

a matchup nightmare. Yeah, my workout for him

45:31

in the long run for sure. I'm

45:33

excited to watch Travis Hunter's career. Yeah,

45:35

dude. This was the first weekend I

45:37

saw like the Travis Hunter effect on

45:39

the youth. There was this kid. We

45:42

were at this little Easter thing on

45:44

Sunday and he put on his Travis

45:46

Hunter jersey and they're playing football in

45:48

the backyard and he was switching between

45:50

offense and defense and he would line

45:52

up and he would go offense mode

45:54

and then he would switch back and

45:56

he would go defense mode and do

45:58

his thing. No doubt. That's pretty cool

46:00

because For us, it's

46:02

like, yeah, we won't we we're growing up

46:04

It's only like oh, I'm Randy Moss

46:06

or um, yeah, whoever when now they can

46:08

just be Travis Hunter everywhere. He is

46:11

trying to play both positions right next level

46:13

I think, I don't want to miss quote, but I

46:15

think he said he won't play football if he

46:17

can't play both ways. Yeah. Which is wild. I'm

46:20

excited to see it. 120 snaps a game.

46:22

I mean, it hasn't been done. Like in

46:24

my brain, I don't see how it works

46:26

out. Like just imagine the week you have

46:28

invested in one position at the next level

46:30

and think of yourself, you know, both sides

46:33

of the ball. Yeah. Could you

46:35

imagine being in the NFL and stepping

46:37

off the sideline and then not stepping back

46:39

on the sideline? Your break is your

46:41

special teams? Yeah. like, oh, puns on, I'll

46:43

get off for one play. Get this

46:45

water real quick. I wonder if like

46:47

- Cause Cam Newton was breaking it down

46:49

on, Cam Newton was breaking it down on

46:51

his potty. Like imagine if you're like, you're

46:53

on the dolphins and in practice, it's like

46:55

you're covering Tyree Kill and then the next

46:57

period you're stepping to the other side and

46:59

Jaylen Ramsey is covering you. Yeah. in the

47:02

physicality at the next level, just all of

47:04

it, the mental, the physical, everything. I'm

47:06

not questioning his gas tank. I'm

47:08

more so just questioning like,

47:11

it will be insane if he

47:13

gets that done. I

47:15

can imagine, bro. I know. It's

47:17

crazy. I think to myself like, what about when

47:19

he gets older? There's no,

47:21

there's just, again, there's no way it's

47:23

sustainable. regret not going to one and

47:25

just staying with one position the whole

47:27

time because there's more longevity in that.

47:29

Yeah. You gotta think four years from

47:31

now. There's no way it's sustainable. 120

47:33

snaps a game, it can't be. For

47:35

the organization, you gotta be fired up,

47:37

like using it out in his rookie

47:39

deal. Yeah. But longevity purposes, like

47:41

for the individual, it's almost like, I

47:43

don't see how that's sustainable. But

47:46

imagine he plays 10 years. Do you

47:48

think that we will ever see Because the

47:50

quarterbacks get more and more athletic. A

47:52

quarterback. My dream scenario would be

47:54

a quarterback playing both ways. In the

47:56

NFL? Like a quarterback playing quarterback

47:58

and safety. No. Never.

48:01

Never. Never. There's

48:03

too much involved in the

48:05

quarterback position. Like if you

48:07

look at should or not

48:09

should Travis, I would see

48:11

him being predominantly like a corner. And

48:13

then in the situation where he just has

48:15

packages on offense. Yeah,

48:18

but more Charles Watson Yeah, yeah,

48:20

but obviously like more invested on

48:22

the offensive side But you'd more

48:24

so just have packages and his

48:27

main focus will probably be cornerbacks,

48:29

right? Cuz there's no way there's

48:31

just I mean who knows though

48:33

I'm not sure but I'm just

48:35

thinking like there's no way like

48:37

the Our brains cannot comprehend.

48:39

Yeah. Yeah. Being in it for this many

48:41

that many years and just being like imagining how

48:43

tired you are after camp and then being

48:45

like, well, we're tired. Look at that guy. He

48:47

just played everywhere. Yeah. Yeah. So he

48:50

is able to like actually play both ways.

48:52

Do you think he's going to demand an absurd

48:54

amount of money because, hey, I'm a lockdown

48:56

corner and I'm also wide receiver number one. Buddy,

48:58

if he's a lockdown corner and a wide

49:00

receiver one, he should get a billion dollar contract.

49:03

Higher than all the quarterbacks. Yeah, yeah. Higher

49:05

than all the quarterbacks. an Otani

49:07

type contract. And you just

49:09

got to hope like he can keep it up for four years

49:11

until he gets a new contract. It's like, yeah, Travis Hunter

49:13

signs $1 billion deal. And then,

49:16

I mean, that would be mind

49:18

blowing. Yeah. Yeah. $500

49:21

million guaranteed. The different clauses and

49:23

everything and if you get hurt playing

49:25

this. playing defense you you're only

49:28

making this much or if you get

49:30

hurt playing offense you're only gonna

49:32

make this much that contract that contract

49:34

would be like so interesting to

49:36

read crazy man he created a different

49:38

market i hope he does it

49:40

i would love i would love to

49:43

witness that a dude that plays

49:45

in the NFL at the highest possible

49:47

level you can play and plays

49:49

both ways in his dominant like first

49:51

three games technically could he be

49:53

a Would he be like a two

49:55

-time Pro Bowl selection in one year?

49:58

Could be. Yeah. That would

50:00

be so sick. Yeah, just double

50:02

everyone's numbers. That

50:04

would be insane. He plays eight

50:06

years as a 16 -time Pro Bowler.

50:10

16 -time All -Pro. I'm

50:13

excited to see too like this class

50:15

performing the league because everybody's kind of

50:17

like shitting on it being one of the

50:19

weaker classes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I'm

50:22

kind of hopeful that You know, they

50:24

have like a good selection of guys that

50:26

just conquers the league. where Genty goes

50:28

and how he does. You

50:30

saw his letter teams. His letter was dope.

50:32

That was awesome. That was

50:34

awesome. I pray to God, Cam Ward, is

50:36

the guy for the Titans for the

50:38

next 15 years. How do you feel? What

50:40

do you think? I

50:42

mean, he's got the talent. He

50:44

put up records. He

50:47

can move through the pocket. He can

50:49

make every single throw. He can extend

50:51

plays like... He's got the capability. I

50:53

know. I hope it works out for

50:55

the for the Titans organization. Yeah, I

50:57

hope it does too. Crazy.

51:01

I just hope he has a help. Mark A and

51:03

Marcus Marriota situation, three tutties in the first half. The

51:06

national be set on fire. That

51:08

first game, I thought we were winning the Super

51:10

Bowl that year. I was like, oh, it's over.

51:13

Again. Yeah, it was no one's number one pick

51:15

versus number two pick. A number

51:17

two pick. Dismantle number one. Murdered.

51:19

That was crazy. Speaking of Marcus.

51:23

Yeah, this this episode

51:25

is this is everything. Mount

51:27

Busmore. For me personally,

51:30

I feel like it's a Mount Busmore. It is. And

51:32

you could I wish the only thing I wish

51:34

about this podcast is that it was two hours longer.

51:36

Yeah, you can talk to him for days. You

51:38

can. And he was we talked about I think it

51:40

was in the vlog. But if we would have

51:42

got Marcus a couple of years ago. that

51:44

podcast wouldn't have been as good. He was

51:46

so open and vulnerable about all the trials

51:48

and tribulations, the ups, the downs. In a

51:50

couple years ago, just no one talking to

51:52

him in this interview, like where his head

51:54

was at. Yeah. This

51:56

podcast is all time. God.

52:00

one of my favorites. There's not, yeah. I

52:02

love him. I love him

52:04

so much. yeah, we've been trying to get him for a while. His

52:07

wife, though, I'll tell you what, in the future. We

52:10

need to get her on the bus, man. His

52:12

wife is, oh, I can't wait for the tell

52:14

-all when it's over. Yeah. When he's done in,

52:16

what, 11 more years? Yeah, he wants to play

52:18

20. He wants to play 20 years in the

52:20

NFL. Yeah, dude. Win

52:22

up this episode to bring you true classic,

52:24

boys. The shirt I'm wearing right now, you

52:26

might think, yo, Louis looks kind of tight right now. good.

52:28

Or will he see? I got the Or

52:30

will he see? In the endies. Them boys look

52:33

nice. today. Well, the reason why is

52:35

because we're wearing true classic and I know, listen,

52:37

they messed up in a big way because they

52:39

decided that they're going to be sponsors of us. If

52:41

I was not with true classic on this

52:43

bus, I would still be buying true classic. Not

52:45

only is the fabric incredible and grabs the

52:47

shoulders and the chest just right. It's got enough

52:50

length for you tall boys out there because

52:52

they did come out with the excels. They're also

52:54

extremely affordable. I love this brand.

52:56

It's a little warm right now. So I got

52:58

the shorts on, but usually I'm rocking those

53:00

black pants. Then boys are in another sneaker too.

53:03

Easy to pack, like you just have the blank,

53:05

simple T's, jeans, shorts, whatever it is. You just

53:07

throw them in the suitcase. You don't have to

53:09

think about, should I wear this, should I wear

53:11

that? You just get true

53:13

class. One thing I noticed in my life

53:15

is anytime I'm around people that think

53:17

they have money, it's the, you know, the

53:19

Goddy brands, the big bold, they got

53:21

this acrylic painting on top of them and

53:23

they got the watches and stuff like

53:25

that. Anytime I'm around a gentleman who you

53:28

know his bank account looks like a

53:30

phone number, it's a classic. plain looking tea.

53:32

He's not there to impress anybody because

53:34

he's already inside knows I'm successful as fuck.

53:36

Yeah, I can do this. And

53:38

that's another reason to wear a true classic

53:40

tea. Do me a favor. Go

53:43

find yourself some true classic tea at

53:45

Costco, Sam's Club Target or online at trueclassic.com

53:47

forward slash Boston. Kids and women's line

53:49

are launching later this year. Look good. Play

53:51

good boys. Let's feel good out there

53:53

too. Let's get back to this episode. The

53:58

40s and free agents podcast with

54:00

Daniel Jeremiah and Greg Rosenthal has prepared

54:02

you for the 2025 NFL draft.

54:04

We've told you what last year's playoff

54:07

teams need to return to the

54:09

postseason. And how teams with new coaches

54:11

should approach the draft. So as

54:13

draft season comes to a close, we've

54:15

got you covered before your favorite

54:17

team goes on the clock. We'll break

54:19

it all down once all 257

54:21

picks have been made. Listen to the

54:23

40s and free agents podcast on

54:26

the I heart radio app Apple podcasts

54:28

or wherever you get your podcasts

54:30

Should we hit shout out no free

54:32

shot on jump into it by

54:34

the way, I just saw a Netflix

54:36

background this Wednesday. Yeah, tomorrow. Yes

54:38

The last couple weeks we've been talking

54:40

about we I talk about it.

54:42

I I want to say I have

54:45

no host host. How we doing? How's

54:48

everybody doing? This is Battle Camp.

54:51

Dude, this was such a fun experience. And so

54:53

like this time last year, I was just

54:55

getting back from filming this in Mexico. And

54:58

I had no idea what to expect. I

55:00

had no idea, I had no idea what

55:02

I was doing the entire time. It was

55:04

so much fun. The process, like my agent

55:06

calling me and being like, hey, this company

55:08

wants you to host a show, but you're

55:10

probably too busy for it. I'm like, well,

55:12

what's the company? They're like, Netflix. I'm like,

55:14

should probably take that fucking call. So

55:16

I take the call with these people and then I

55:18

make a joke about not being able to read good.

55:21

And they had like kind of sent them in a blender a little

55:23

bit. So they're like, hey, we got to make sure Taylor can do

55:25

a script I remember when you were having those, what

55:27

was it like? They're basically the tryouts. Yeah, yeah,

55:29

yeah. So yeah, I was super nervous. I was

55:31

nervous. So I went, I memorized the entire script

55:33

and I did it for him and told me

55:36

I had it. And they sent a host coach,

55:38

shouted Alita. um to my house for

55:40

three days and we stood outside of my backyard

55:42

by the pond and she's like all right this is

55:44

how it's gonna go this is what's gonna happen

55:46

when you're going you're talking they'll just stop you and

55:48

they'll move cameras and all a sudden so she

55:50

was so great like kind of teaching me what was

55:52

going to happen in the process and then i

55:54

go down there she's with me for like two days

55:57

or i could i think a day and a

55:59

half and then she flew back to california where she

56:01

lives and i remember just being alone like 400

56:03

people on set 200 were straight

56:05

out of Mexico. The other 200

56:07

were, you know, besides the contestants of

56:09

me, like all from like London, all from

56:11

Europe. And it's like me and like

56:13

two other Americans the whole time. It was

56:15

like, it's such a culture shock, everything.

56:17

But it was so much fun to do.

56:19

I had a blast like these people.

56:21

I wouldn't go into it. So explain what

56:23

battle camp is to. So battle

56:25

camp is there's three teams. And they're

56:27

going to do this challenge. It's going

56:29

to be intense. Like there's like these

56:31

massive walls that they got to do

56:34

this different stuff on. There's some simpler

56:36

ones, but these insane challenges, whichever team

56:38

wins is immune from being eliminated. Then

56:40

the other two teams, whoever got third

56:42

place, their name goes on this wheel.

56:44

The first team. We'll then pick three

56:46

people from the other two teams to

56:48

do punishments. Those punishments could be like

56:50

cold tub stuff. It could be eating

56:52

crazy things. It could be how many

56:54

steps you can do in an hour.

56:57

Whoever does the best is good. The other

56:59

two, they go on the wheel. And

57:01

then there's a camp wide vote to fill

57:03

up the other 12 slots. They

57:05

vote on who they want to go. And at

57:07

night, we do a wheel ceremony. I spin the wheel.

57:10

Someone goes home. And all these guys are competing

57:12

for Is it whoever the wheel lands on?

57:14

Whoever it lands on. So there could be somebody

57:16

with seven their name on the wheel seven

57:18

times and a person on the wheel one time

57:20

and if it lands on them, they're out

57:23

of there So it's a game of like popularity

57:25

athleticism and chance dude, and it is it

57:27

was cool It was interesting too like being a

57:29

part of this because you're just in a

57:31

football world your whole entire life Now you're being

57:33

thrust it into like this reality TV pop

57:35

culture and so you do not know what to

57:37

expect I will say this cast was awesome

57:39

Like they were great to be around there were

57:41

so many moments where they're rearranging cameras And

57:43

they're like it's kind of just me staring at

57:45

them and eventually I'm like let me just

57:48

talk to these people You know and so like

57:50

they were all awesome this dude Tony who

57:52

you will see on the show He is Hilarious

57:54

and well this guy right here would make

57:56

fun of him all the time, but he was

57:58

one of those guys you can kind of

58:00

like Punch on a little bit and he was

58:02

he was great, but he kept coming on.

58:04

He was so curious about like a football world

58:06

and all that He's like, you know, I

58:08

played and I was like, oh, yeah, he's a

58:10

high school. We got stiff hips And we

58:13

were just going back and forth. This kid was

58:15

great. He was awesome But the show I

58:17

had a lot of fun doing it. I hope

58:19

everybody enjoys it because it comes out comes

58:21

out tomorrow Watch crew that's gonna be in Green

58:23

Bay on Wednesday. I think we

58:25

got to do a watch party first episode

58:27

Oh, yeah, we will be together. Yo,

58:30

wait, we're going Wednesday. Yeah I

58:32

thought were going Thursday morning. All

58:35

right, Wednesday evening. Let's go, let's

58:38

go, let's go Wednesday evening. I

58:40

think it's Wednesday early afternoon. Yeah.

58:42

Let's go early, let's go early afternoon Wednesday. I

58:45

can already see one thing from

58:47

seeing the trailer. Yeah, we got it.

58:49

You should have had the fade. Facts.

58:54

Well, you should have the fade. You're clean with the fade.

58:56

I do appreciate that. And I do think the fade,

58:58

I will say, it looks better than I thought it would.

59:00

It looks better than I thought it would. However, the

59:03

maintenance it takes to keep a fade. For

59:06

that reason, I'm out. It's only as hard as

59:08

you make it. Yeah, man. You take one hour every

59:10

two weeks. Three haircuts a year, four haircuts a

59:12

year type of guy. I like to go out and

59:14

then eventually look at the mirror and be like,

59:16

I got to take care of this. So I go

59:18

and take care of it. I like a little

59:20

more of a grunge look. Yeah. Big win for the

59:22

bus. We've been trying to get Taylor to get

59:24

this fade. Yeah. Shout out, JP. minute. Promise is made.

59:26

Promise is kept, brother. We got it

59:28

done. Let's

59:30

go. You know, hey, he'll keep

59:33

the fade going. He will. He'll

59:35

keep the fade going. Yeah. Because

59:38

you know, boy, he likes to look good. He

59:40

likes to look good. Like, once it grows, he'll get

59:42

the fade again. He likes to look good like

59:44

not everybody likes to look good. Look at

59:46

this. Sherb just doing little

59:48

editing. That looks

59:50

solid, man. Shout out, no for

59:52

shout out. Shout out, no for shout out. I

59:54

have a shout out. Go ahead. And it's

59:56

going to be two charcuterie boards. Let's fucking go,

59:58

dog. at the Luan

1:00:00

Easter Bash 2025. Look,

1:00:03

I'm a man who I don't like to socialize

1:00:05

a whole lot. I love to sit by a

1:00:07

charcuterie board. By the way, is there such a

1:00:09

lie? Well, I know once you

1:00:11

get in the groups, but once you're there feeling it out,

1:00:13

like I'm somebody who'll just gravitate more towards the eating

1:00:15

table. And then kind of you kind of pick your shots.

1:00:17

You kind of like, yeah, you find you're

1:00:19

hoping you find your people there has so and so

1:00:21

showed up yet. And then if new ones are coming

1:00:23

over, you're kind of like, man, hopefully this doesn't last

1:00:25

too long. But I like to find myself by the

1:00:27

by the eating table. And shout

1:00:29

out Jason, but your, that whole table

1:00:32

setup was as good as I've ever seen.

1:00:34

That's fucking good. As good as I've

1:00:36

ever seen. And we got a

1:00:38

photo up right now, but picture like little

1:00:40

motes and crevices going throughout the board.

1:00:42

And in those little motes and crevices are

1:00:44

like cheese and chocolates, different variations of

1:00:46

chocolates. It was, you had your tuna salad

1:00:48

sandwiches to where the bread is kind

1:00:50

of soft and smashed into the tuna salad.

1:00:54

The... What's the, what's like

1:00:56

the yellow orange cheese? Pimento. Pimento

1:00:58

cheese, the little Pimento cheese bites. Jason

1:01:00

makes fire from Holy shit, bro. The

1:01:03

cups that you have with the salami and the

1:01:05

cheeses and the olives, like, it

1:01:07

was incredible. It

1:01:09

was incredible. Jason is amazing. Jason

1:01:11

made LaWon Easter Bash 2025. Yeah.

1:01:13

What it needed to be. It was

1:01:15

awesome. Beautiful shout out for out.

1:01:17

That's my shout out, no free shout out.

1:01:20

My shout out, no free shout out is

1:01:22

the first time being sun kissed after a

1:01:24

long winter. And it kind

1:01:26

of goes back to Luan, East or Bass

1:01:28

2025, man. We were all out there all day.

1:01:30

It's like hot, where if

1:01:32

it was like, it's been weeks of it being that

1:01:34

temperature, I'm be like, yeah, it's pretty hot out here. But

1:01:36

I feel like it was everybody's first time like kind

1:01:38

of being out in the open after a long hibernating winter.

1:01:40

And everyone's just like enjoying a little bit of sweat

1:01:42

going down your cheeks. At the end of the day, you

1:01:44

kind of look, I look at Taylor and I go,

1:01:46

sweetheart, you got a little red on your face. She's like,

1:01:48

look at you. And I kind of look in the

1:01:50

mirror and I'm like, dude, yes, we're back

1:01:52

in tan time. It's beautiful. Sooner or later,

1:01:55

Jack will see me in the Bronco, ripping

1:01:57

around those shirts, trying to keep that tan

1:01:59

even, baby. I'm about

1:02:01

it. I'm about it. I love

1:02:03

it. Hey, there's not a better feeling,

1:02:05

man, than getting that first

1:02:07

tan. Yeah. Boys, you

1:02:09

got me? I got one kind

1:02:11

of on the same lines as yours, but

1:02:14

it's the first time you get into a

1:02:16

pool. After after a winter

1:02:18

or whatever and apparently yesterday my cousin told

1:02:20

me he's ex army guys So like

1:02:22

I believe what he's saying was apparently the

1:02:24

hottest record on day for April 20th

1:02:26

ever earlier this year So it was a

1:02:28

beautiful day yesterday in Nashville pool was

1:02:30

going I was at my parents house and

1:02:32

just like getting in there and just

1:02:34

diving in just kind of floating around you

1:02:37

remember Yeah, good times are right on

1:02:39

the horizon. Yeah, they're on the right I

1:02:41

love the water. So anytime I get

1:02:43

in the pool the ocean the lake. It's

1:02:45

a good day Sipping on some neutral.

1:02:47

He's sitting on neutral. Whatever you want, man.

1:02:49

They both work. Also,

1:02:51

you brought, you said 420 yesterday. Oh,

1:02:54

my wife and I have celebrated a

1:02:56

nine -year anniversary. Nine

1:02:58

years, man. Easter. We

1:03:02

just chilled. We just

1:03:04

chilled, man. It was awesome. Like, so...

1:03:06

Did you throw in a roast,

1:03:08

Mark? And spark that shit

1:03:10

up. Yeah, you know about my

1:03:12

personal life on your birthday No,

1:03:16

oh That's oh gee Could you

1:03:18

imagine? Could you imagine me like

1:03:21

putting on the show and like

1:03:23

kind of inching over the tail?

1:03:25

It's like kissing the neck a

1:03:27

little bit. We do you know,

1:03:29

you know, yeah, are you still

1:03:31

watching? This

1:03:34

is battle camp Yeah,

1:03:40

we were sitting there and it was like, yeah,

1:03:42

we kind of just shook as there's Eastern, the kids

1:03:44

were all about Easter. We did

1:03:46

this, so last year we're driving down Granny

1:03:48

White and we see a dog and the dogs

1:03:50

are just like kind of out in the

1:03:52

open. So we get out, we get the dog,

1:03:54

we find out, we like go over to

1:03:56

these people's houses. This old couple

1:03:59

lives in this house. We ended up hanging

1:04:01

out at their house for like an hour.

1:04:03

The this lady Margaret's like showing us her

1:04:05

greenhouse their garden like it's just awesome to

1:04:07

be around them They send us a east

1:04:09

like they do like a Easter egg hunt

1:04:11

for the neighborhood every year And we like

1:04:13

we went to that hung out. It was

1:04:15

awesome. Nice And then obviously you guys know

1:04:17

Jason Like I don't want to flex but

1:04:19

like you're I write every day every day

1:04:21

Monday through Friday like we're eating like crazy

1:04:24

good meals And so Tim like last night

1:04:26

I called shirm up on my torches. What

1:04:28

should I get? So we order a bunch

1:04:30

of that torches, got that queso, but

1:04:32

was it enough? No. Hugh babies,

1:04:34

burgers, milkshakes, just sitting

1:04:36

there watching my team, the

1:04:38

Toronto Maple Leafs. Take one. Oh,

1:04:41

against the senators, man. My

1:04:43

team, my boys. Number

1:04:46

one seed. Number

1:04:48

one. Bro, last time they won

1:04:50

a cup, 1967.

1:04:53

the ones that are not a good year. Taylor,

1:04:55

I'm drawing a lot of who's saying the preps

1:04:57

in. The Maple Leafs are notorious for being, for

1:04:59

getting kicked out of the playoffs in the first

1:05:01

round, notorious for it. And everyone I talk to

1:05:03

who's been in the NHL says, The

1:05:05

Toronto Maple Leafs are like the Dallas

1:05:07

Cowboys. Like it's like, like you're treated

1:05:09

like royalty. Like that is the America's

1:05:11

team. That's whatever NHL's team. And then

1:05:14

Austin Matthews, Scottsdale guy, senators, their captain,

1:05:16

Brady Kachuk. He's a Scottsdale guy. So

1:05:18

I got a couple of AZ boys

1:05:20

rocking to see on their chest, watching

1:05:22

some good old fashioned hockey and watching

1:05:24

the boys crush them six to two,

1:05:26

cashed in a nice little money line

1:05:29

Toronto bet. We're up.

1:05:31

We are going to win it

1:05:33

all this year. Let's go. Let's

1:05:35

go. I got a shout out, no

1:05:37

free shout out. What you got?

1:05:39

This morning I was working out in the

1:05:41

garage and I saw something that I

1:05:43

wish I could meet the dad that created

1:05:45

it, but it's the tennis ball in

1:05:47

the garage that lets you know when to

1:05:49

stop pulling forward. Nice. And

1:05:52

it's multi -use. Like when you're growing

1:05:54

up, you punch it, you dodge

1:05:56

it. And it was, I saw

1:05:58

it in my friend's garage and I'm

1:06:00

like, man. whoever this legend was, you

1:06:02

know, when he finished screwing in that little thing

1:06:04

up top, just stood back, put his hands on

1:06:07

his hips, looked at it and was like, I

1:06:09

just changed the world. And he did. And

1:06:11

I wish I knew a name it. Can't wait

1:06:13

to tell the rest of the dads at

1:06:15

practice. Right. Like y 'all got to do this.

1:06:17

Your wife will never run into the front of

1:06:19

your garage again once you do this. Yeah,

1:06:21

iconic. It's a great shout out. Yeah. of

1:06:24

greatest inventions of mankind. Ever.

1:06:26

Yes. It's the hence mankind.

1:06:29

Anybody trying to follow that

1:06:31

one? Yeah, I will.

1:06:34

Oh, OK, man. Oh,

1:06:36

shit. It's not like that,

1:06:38

though. I want to

1:06:40

shout out Alex Cantu. He came to

1:06:42

the shop last week. You guys had

1:06:44

just left. He's a border patrol officer

1:06:46

down in Texas. Dropped off some

1:06:48

patches for the boys. So

1:06:50

I said that we would shout him out

1:06:52

on the pod. So yeah, shout out Alex

1:06:54

Cantu. We appreciate you what you do down

1:06:56

there on the border. All

1:06:58

right. Now we got some some patches

1:07:00

from shout out Alex. Shout out Alex,

1:07:02

man. Appreciate

1:07:04

you coming by, brother. Let's

1:07:07

dive in. We're good.

1:09:34

been looking forward to this for a long

1:09:36

time and I appreciate you. You're not a big

1:09:38

interview guy. I'm not. So we are bro.

1:09:40

Especially in the off season, too. And it's like,

1:09:43

and it's like in my kind of my

1:09:45

hometown is, you know. And it's

1:09:47

like where I really just try

1:09:49

to like unwind and not get into

1:09:51

too much. So really she kind

1:09:53

of pushed me to do it. Should

1:09:55

I kill me, man? Yes. You

1:09:57

really did? Not really, no. I

1:09:59

was wanting to do it. Damn. I

1:10:02

just shot on my wife and

1:10:04

my kid. If she wanted

1:10:06

to, she's over there right now. We got

1:10:08

a little Micah here. Yeah,

1:10:10

we'll do it. Tell all the bus. That'll be nice.

1:10:12

I know every person in Nashville who has ever

1:10:14

gone to a Tennessee Titans football game is smiling ear

1:10:16

to ear right now. They're thinking about you and

1:10:18

you were telling a story before about coming back and

1:10:20

playing the Titans for the first time. I like

1:10:22

you to relive that for me. Yeah. So

1:10:25

back last season was the

1:10:27

first time I played against the

1:10:29

Titans and crazy thing. It's

1:10:32

been five years. And

1:10:34

it was a really emotional time

1:10:36

for me. It was kind of

1:10:38

weird and eerie because it's like, you

1:10:40

know, I really, I wasn't playing and it

1:10:42

was like, I was going out there

1:10:44

and I was seeing, I mean, there's like

1:10:46

maybe two guys there since I've been

1:10:48

there, you know, but it's a lot of

1:10:50

the same resource staff. you know, saw

1:10:52

Jeb, of course, saw Jeb. You know, Jeb

1:10:54

Waddle to his ass up to here.

1:10:56

What you need, Marcus? Yeah, yeah, yeah. But

1:10:58

got to see Amy and Keith and

1:11:01

the ownership and it was cool. Got

1:11:03

to share a moment a little bit

1:11:05

and got a big hug and I

1:11:07

was kind of unexpected for me. I

1:11:09

didn't know how that was going to

1:11:11

go and they were just very welcoming

1:11:13

and I think for me personally, like

1:11:15

it was such a good five years,

1:11:17

regardless of how it finished and all

1:11:19

that, but There was a lot

1:11:21

of good memories in there, and it was

1:11:23

kind of cool to share a moment with

1:11:25

them, and you never close a door, man.

1:11:27

You never close a door. Why did it

1:11:29

feel unexpected? You feel

1:11:32

like it ended in a very awkward way

1:11:34

to where you just, more so, I'm not

1:11:36

gonna use the word hate for a lack

1:11:38

of a better term, but you just have

1:11:40

this assumption built up in your head on

1:11:42

how it might go. There's a little bit

1:11:44

of animosity, but maybe not really. Yeah, I

1:11:46

think a little bit of, I mean, pride,

1:11:48

right? At

1:11:51

the time like Ryan played unbelievable and

1:11:53

I was upset that it wasn't me and

1:11:55

I wanted to be there I wanted

1:11:57

to be a part of that and When

1:11:59

it didn't work out. I didn't know

1:12:01

what that response was gonna be from people

1:12:03

that were around there I know for

1:12:05

how it was for me personally like, you

1:12:07

know, yeah, I was upset but At

1:12:09

the same time we had so many people

1:12:12

in there that were so good to

1:12:14

me that I was like, huh, I wonder

1:12:16

how that's gonna like pan

1:12:18

out like I didn't I didn't really get

1:12:20

to say goodbye maybe the way that I

1:12:22

wanted to and to see people to see

1:12:24

some familiar faces the love and all that

1:12:26

that was still there like it was very

1:12:28

genuine and yeah it was I mean it

1:12:30

was emotional for me so it was kind

1:12:32

of one of those moments and it does

1:12:34

help when you win the game obviously yeah

1:12:36

but yeah it was cool to see a

1:12:38

lot of a lot of old faces did

1:12:40

you have a lot of guys in the

1:12:42

team leading up to playing the Titans or

1:12:44

like, hey, we're going to get one for

1:12:46

you. Yeah. I mean, it's funny because DQ,

1:12:48

um, he does, he does like a rotation

1:12:50

of captains every week. And a lot of

1:12:52

times it's guys that either played for that

1:12:54

team or whatever. So when it was

1:12:56

the Titans week, I was like, he's for

1:12:58

sure. Like, I was like,

1:13:00

he's going to, because at the, at the end

1:13:02

the day, like he picks three guys and then

1:13:04

like he has a guy basically speak to the

1:13:06

team. And for me, I

1:13:08

was like, I'm probably going to end up

1:13:10

being one of those guys just because how it

1:13:13

played out. So

1:13:15

it was kind of the team was

1:13:17

like kind of rallying around there. And I'm

1:13:19

like, guys, I'm like five years removed.

1:13:21

Like, you know, that staff, everybody there, like

1:13:23

most of those guys are new.

1:13:25

But do you remember Ben Jones, like every time we

1:13:27

played Houston? Oh, for sure. It was always like super

1:13:29

personal to him. And he was at the Titans for

1:13:31

seven years. Yes. And even that seventh year to be

1:13:33

like, Ben, we like it's okay, man. We

1:13:36

don't worry. We're going to get this one

1:13:38

for you. Yeah. So they were rallying around you

1:13:40

like that a little bit. And we had

1:13:42

such a good team, just a core, like a

1:13:44

core group of guys last year that was

1:13:46

just fun. It reminded me a lot of like

1:13:48

our first few years in Tennessee, just guys

1:13:50

very close, regardless of what side of the ball

1:13:52

they played on. Um, so it

1:13:54

was a pretty cool moment for me to be

1:13:56

a part of that. And yeah, those guys, man,

1:13:59

they were, we're going to get this one for

1:14:01

you. I'm like, it, it's still a regular game

1:14:03

for me. Like we're good, bro. But

1:14:05

when the clock struck zero, it was a piece of your life. That's

1:14:10

nature. That's like your competitive nature

1:14:12

being like, yeah. Got those bastards. Yeah.

1:14:14

How was, um, how was

1:14:16

the, the goodbye? You say it might have been

1:14:18

the goodbye you wanted to have obviously. the

1:14:21

way it ended with the Denver with the Denver

1:14:23

game and we'll get into all that. But like

1:14:25

when you're cleaning out your locker for the last

1:14:27

time, do you like remember that? Do you remember

1:14:29

looking back and being like, I think, OK, this

1:14:31

is probably the last one we'll ever step in

1:14:33

this facility again after being picked? Yeah, a little

1:14:35

bit. I think those those emotions definitely crossed my

1:14:37

mind. What

1:14:40

was hard about it was I

1:14:42

was I mean, I was like 26.

1:14:44

So I was like, I'm

1:14:46

just I'm I'm to find the next spot and I'm

1:14:48

going to go play and I'm going to go prove

1:14:50

everybody wrong. And instead of

1:14:52

like kind of just like you said

1:14:54

taking a moment and like realizing like

1:14:56

what was really going on and to

1:14:58

just Say thank you to a lot

1:15:00

of the people that we're I mean,

1:15:02

there's people in there Jeb, you know,

1:15:04

Hoss, I know Hoss isn't there anymore

1:15:06

But you know just years and years

1:15:08

and years of people that you know

1:15:10

did a lot for you So I

1:15:12

think I was so focused on what

1:15:14

was next that I didn't really take

1:15:16

time to just say, you know, hey,

1:15:18

thank you we We had a good

1:15:20

run. Yeah. It's hard to be

1:15:23

present in those moments. For sure. It really is.

1:15:25

How was it for you as a player

1:15:27

kind of going through? I'm not going to say

1:15:29

first, you've had plenty of adversities, but a

1:15:31

big adversity known that you were the second overall

1:15:33

pick and probably a part of you feels

1:15:35

like maybe yourself personally, like, did I fail this

1:15:37

franchise or am I starting to doubt my

1:15:39

ability? Like, bring us in your head

1:15:41

of the player in that moment in that

1:15:43

year. Oh, dude, it was, yeah, all of that.

1:15:46

And I think a lot of that was because I

1:15:50

have such high expectations for myself that

1:15:52

I was, I envision being

1:15:54

a part of a Super Bowl team

1:15:56

there. I envision myself kind of

1:15:58

like being a guy and playing up

1:16:00

to all the expectations. And

1:16:02

when it doesn't work out that way, it's a,

1:16:04

it's a sting. And I think for a

1:16:06

long period of time, like I never really had

1:16:08

to deal with that. You know, I came

1:16:10

here at Oregon and we're rolling, you know, and

1:16:12

I - Three, what was it? Three, four touchdown

1:16:14

passes in the first half? This

1:16:17

first year, he had a perfect quarterback rating. That

1:16:20

game too, we'll get into that.

1:16:22

That game, I was like, we're

1:16:24

going to win it. But

1:16:26

the year before that, we were 3 and 13. And

1:16:29

I was like, we're going to be. This is

1:16:31

awful. Bro, it's so funny. I'll never forget. I'm sitting

1:16:33

next to Craig Stevens after we'd won that game.

1:16:35

He looks at me he goes, man, we're going to

1:16:37

make the playoffs this year. And then we lose

1:16:39

like six drinks in a row. I was like, what

1:16:41

the? Yeah. But

1:16:44

no, I mean, yeah, I just you

1:16:46

go through a lot of ups and

1:16:48

sometimes you feel like you're invincible. And

1:16:50

I think I was kind of in

1:16:52

that mode. And I was struggling a

1:16:54

little bit, probably I would even say

1:16:56

like in 2018, just being hurt. I

1:16:58

was like, banged up. And

1:17:01

that's right. You had the

1:17:03

was it the wrist the hand

1:17:05

I don't wish 2018 upon

1:17:07

anybody like I was I had

1:17:09

a fracture in my neck.

1:17:11

I had a broken rib. I

1:17:13

had torn plantar fasciitis It

1:17:15

was like it was a mess

1:17:17

and something is off. It's

1:17:19

lining to do better. That's not

1:17:21

you Remember the Ravens Jack

1:17:23

Hey that Ravens game is crazy

1:17:27

We're gonna talk about that. A lot

1:17:29

of that was I was holding

1:17:31

the ball. It's fair, you know, but

1:17:34

yeah, I was just I think

1:17:36

like 2018 2017 like I was I

1:17:38

didn't feel invincible anymore. I had

1:17:40

had a really bad ankle injury in

1:17:42

16 Very unfortunate or you know,

1:17:44

you just got legs cut like Tangled

1:17:46

up and I broke my ankle

1:17:48

and that was kind of the first

1:17:50

time really as an athlete where

1:17:52

I didn't feel like Okay,

1:17:54

I'm really not superhuman like I I'm gonna

1:17:56

I can get hurt I can kind

1:17:59

of get in trouble in that sense and

1:18:01

It was kind of interesting because I

1:18:03

think a lot of that started to develop

1:18:05

a little bit of the anxiety the

1:18:07

fear of not being maybe who I thought

1:18:09

I was and I think that all

1:18:11

kind of accumulated into what transpired in 19

1:18:13

where I mean, I wasn't playing well

1:18:16

at all Be completely honest with you and

1:18:18

I think Braves is just trying to

1:18:20

like hang on during camp and we all

1:18:22

kind of knew Ryan was playing well

1:18:24

and I think out of respect for me

1:18:26

He was like just keep it like

1:18:28

we'll get you there. We'll get you there

1:18:30

because I mean we I played against

1:18:33

him. He was a defensive corner in Houston

1:18:35

like I had some good runs against

1:18:37

him So he kind of knew what the

1:18:39

potential was and I think I was

1:18:41

so lost in my own mind that I

1:18:43

Just it kind of just led to

1:18:45

what it was So yeah, I mean It's

1:18:49

interesting because I think throughout my career

1:18:51

I've kind of had these peaks and

1:18:53

valleys and I'm starting to overcome these

1:18:55

valleys because I'm leaning into a little

1:18:57

bit more of the mental side of

1:18:59

the game I was so much more

1:19:01

like physical like I was like I

1:19:04

can just kind of outrun people I

1:19:06

can out through people Now it's like

1:19:08

okay. You can't do that anymore. Like

1:19:10

how are you gonna kind of? Create

1:19:12

the advantage create those types of things

1:19:14

and that's when I started to kind

1:19:16

of learn a little bit more about

1:19:18

how to play the position and I

1:19:20

was a lot of that had to

1:19:22

do with like being with the Raiders

1:19:24

and and So yeah, but I think

1:19:26

over time you just kind of learn

1:19:28

and Part of that adversity made me

1:19:30

better When you talk about things you

1:19:32

would do a little bit differently, do you ever wish you

1:19:34

were more vocal with the OCs? Yes. One

1:19:36

thing I noticed, because one

1:19:38

thing I didn't notice when they were like,

1:19:40

what was it between Ryan and Marcus, is you

1:19:42

always were very agreeable. Like you're always super

1:19:44

easy to get along with it. I always see

1:19:46

in my head, Marcus, you're to do this,

1:19:48

isn't this? And there was never a pushback in

1:19:50

a team meeting room. But I remember, I

1:19:53

think it was the game after the Denver game.

1:19:55

We're playing the Chargers. start. I remember. Ryan's

1:19:57

first start. Him and Arthur, I walked into the

1:19:59

little cafeteria on Saturday. And I

1:20:01

literally hear Ryan going, don't call this play.

1:20:03

Call this one. I like this play on

1:20:05

first down. I like this play on second

1:20:07

down. And he's just seemed like he seemed

1:20:09

like a guy that's been in the league

1:20:11

for a long time and has had more

1:20:13

valleys. Yeah. And so when you look back

1:20:15

at that like what would you have done

1:20:17

differently from like a vocal standpoint with these

1:20:19

OCs? I think you said it. I think

1:20:21

just being Open and transparent about what I

1:20:23

felt most comfortable with Because I think the

1:20:25

ego for me is like I can do

1:20:27

anything whatever you want me to do. I'll

1:20:30

do it But there's things that you really

1:20:32

like and there's things that you're good at

1:20:34

and I think I could have been more

1:20:36

Transparent about hey, I don't see that very

1:20:38

well. I'm not into that. I don't like

1:20:40

Hard play action turning my back and like

1:20:43

trying to figure out what's going on like

1:20:45

being able to communicate those things early on

1:20:47

in my career I think what it helped

1:20:49

and that's something that like with with me

1:20:51

now like being able to like hey Jay

1:20:53

Talk about Jaden like Tell him what you

1:20:55

like and what you don't like, you know

1:20:58

Just kind of passing some of that knowledge

1:21:00

on a little bit so that maybe he

1:21:02

doesn't kind of fall the footsteps that I

1:21:04

dad you mentioned Figuring some

1:21:06

things out with the Raiders. What was

1:21:08

it about the Raiders that was kind

1:21:10

of bringing you out of your shell

1:21:12

or your development? Or maybe it was

1:21:14

coming out of that Valley and being

1:21:16

in a completely new environment because sometimes

1:21:18

that's super helpful for a player. Yeah,

1:21:20

a lot of that A lot of

1:21:22

it was coach Gruden. He was like,

1:21:24

hey, I want you to come here

1:21:26

for a couple years. Just like find

1:21:28

yourself I know you're kind of not

1:21:30

who you who you are you like

1:21:32

you're kind of lost And

1:21:34

he's like, man, just take your time, figure it

1:21:36

out. And I have a lot

1:21:39

of respect for coach Gruden. I know people

1:21:41

may have however they feel about him. But

1:21:43

at that point in time in my career,

1:21:45

that's exactly what I needed. And I was

1:21:47

in a great quarterback room, like Derek's awesome. And

1:21:49

being able just to kind of

1:21:52

find the love again, almost like competing

1:21:54

and having fun. And

1:21:57

a lot of that was just like Gruden like,

1:21:59

hey, Just go out there and

1:22:01

feel free to make a mistake. Like you don't

1:22:03

have to be perfect. So

1:22:05

I really kind of aligned with that

1:22:07

and I felt very comfortable with it. And

1:22:09

then on top of that, like Vegas

1:22:11

is like the ninth island. So people in

1:22:13

Hawaii, when they go to vacation, they

1:22:15

go to Vegas. And for

1:22:17

me, I had a lot of family and

1:22:19

friends there. So like I felt very

1:22:21

comfortable in that community and it made it

1:22:23

really easy for me just to kind

1:22:25

of transition with my family. And I think

1:22:27

a lot of that was kind

1:22:29

of why I felt like I found myself again. Talk

1:22:32

about this place we're at right

1:22:34

now, Oregon. Like, what

1:22:37

has changed so much since you've been

1:22:39

here? Because it seems like they just keep

1:22:41

growing every single year and things just

1:22:43

keep getting better and better. It's impressive. It's

1:22:45

impressive. There was a streak there when we

1:22:47

were done where there was kind of a

1:22:50

transition of coaches over and over again. But

1:22:52

I think the heart and soul of the program has

1:22:54

always been Eugene. It's like the only

1:22:56

thing in town, right? No

1:22:59

matter regardless of how the team is

1:23:01

doing like that stadium is usually sold out

1:23:03

And there's such a crazy following here. So

1:23:06

to have that kind of steady fandom

1:23:08

I think is always propelled this place to

1:23:10

be good and it's always given this

1:23:12

place like expectations and Regardless of who's been

1:23:14

the coach. I think guys have always

1:23:16

tried to come here because it is the

1:23:18

University of Nike and When you look

1:23:20

at it from that standpoint and you let

1:23:22

these guys just come in here and

1:23:25

play and put it together, you can find

1:23:27

ways to be pretty good here. And

1:23:29

I think Dan's kind of found the formula

1:23:31

and it's been cool to watch. What's

1:23:33

it like when you walk into this building

1:23:35

and you go up, I don't know,

1:23:37

this place is a maze, but you walk

1:23:39

up, you walk up the stairs, one

1:23:41

of these 17 staircases and you look over

1:23:44

and it's got the islands of Hawaii. And

1:23:46

there's another hallway that has the eight

1:23:48

Marriot of Jersey, like. Yeah, what is that?

1:23:50

Like, what does that feel like? Well,

1:23:52

our first visit here, we're walking and we're

1:23:54

like, you know, this is Marcus's house

1:23:56

house. Like it's it's create your only Heisman

1:23:59

trophy winner sitting right there. It's

1:24:01

surreal, man. And don't do that. No,

1:24:03

I know it's really and I don't

1:24:05

want to get emotional because it is

1:24:07

it like, you know, I came here

1:24:09

was 17 years old, like didn't have

1:24:11

much thought about what was going on

1:24:13

outside of Hawaii and come to this

1:24:15

place in Eugene. I was so homesick

1:24:17

my first year. But like

1:24:19

they took me kind of under their wing

1:24:22

and regardless of who it was like it

1:24:24

was people in the community. It was a

1:24:26

staff. A lot of the trainers are still here

1:24:28

that I was here with. So they

1:24:30

really kind of helped

1:24:32

me transition into who

1:24:34

I was. And

1:24:36

yeah, I just it's it does it

1:24:38

does get a little emotional because

1:24:41

it's so it's such a part of

1:24:43

you. And it's kind of like

1:24:45

I said, it's surreal like to think

1:24:47

that Middle of the

1:24:49

Pacific some kid gets to come here and

1:24:51

become the only Heisman trophy winner like that's

1:24:53

Well, I even know what the odds are

1:24:55

that right like that's why yeah, so it

1:24:57

kind of blows my mind and still to

1:24:59

this day like even walking through there It

1:25:01

is it's just surreal. How'd you go through

1:25:03

the process of choosing Oregon? That's

1:25:06

a great story

1:25:08

actually So They

1:25:11

offered me before I even started a game in high

1:25:13

school. Before you even started a game? So there was

1:25:15

a kid. There was a guy in front of me.

1:25:17

His name is Jeremy Higgins. He's an all -state player.

1:25:19

He was great. Left -handed kid. Could

1:25:21

really throw it. And was committed

1:25:23

to Utah State. So

1:25:25

I really just had to wait my turn. And I,

1:25:27

like, I messed around playing receiver. Like, I was doing all

1:25:30

sorts of stuff. And I had

1:25:32

kind of done the camp circuit. And...

1:25:35

Got my name out there. I guess

1:25:37

camp circuit like Nike camps a spark

1:25:39

to the Nike spark. Yeah. Yeah a

1:25:41

couple combines They used to hold like

1:25:43

these PA PA combines in Hawaii and

1:25:45

how old are you at this time?

1:25:47

Like what are you like a soft

1:25:50

soft more body and had started yet?

1:25:52

Yeah, hadn't played I mean I played

1:25:54

a game here or there when we're

1:25:56

blowing teams out or when Jeremy had

1:25:58

gotten hurt I played

1:26:00

a little bit, but nothing to the extent

1:26:02

to receive an organ at the time

1:26:04

was like playing a national championship. Yeah. So

1:26:06

it was kind of a weird, wild

1:26:08

story that like, why are you offering this

1:26:10

kid who hasn't played yet? Um,

1:26:14

but what I learned the story was, was

1:26:16

the offensive line coach here, coach Greatwood

1:26:18

was going and recruiting and he was recruiting

1:26:20

at my high school. Um, Monica Greg,

1:26:22

who ended up playing here was playing guard

1:26:24

and. it just so happened while he

1:26:26

was there he I guess had noticed me

1:26:28

running like I was if we were

1:26:31

running sprints or something and had threw my

1:26:33

name out there so they invited me

1:26:35

to come to the camp here and someone

1:26:37

showed me a video but Johnny kind

1:26:39

of talked about this a little bit Johnny

1:26:41

Manziel and at the time I was

1:26:43

offered and Johnny was offered but they invited

1:26:45

me to this camp and they basically

1:26:48

were like put me on this team to

1:26:50

I don't know play with all these

1:26:52

other high school kids And

1:26:54

I'd been there for two days. I'm

1:26:56

in pads like doing all this stuff and

1:26:58

Johnny shows up unpadded T -shirt and shorts

1:27:00

goes in there says they're gonna do

1:27:02

a workout with him Coach Kelly hasn't really

1:27:04

even talked to me. I've been here

1:27:06

for two days He's like hey like why

1:27:09

don't you just come in like just

1:27:11

do a workout with Johnny And I'm mad

1:27:13

because I'm like Johnny's not even been

1:27:15

here. They're gonna he's like offered whatever like

1:27:17

I was just like not feeling the

1:27:19

love. Yeah, and We

1:27:22

run a 40, we're

1:27:24

throwing and Johnny, the

1:27:26

worker was unbelievable. Like,

1:27:28

I mean, I can still remember to this

1:27:30

day, like, I don't think a ball touched

1:27:32

the ground. And it's funny to think, you

1:27:34

know, 10 years later or whatever it is,

1:27:36

but like, get two Heisman Trophy winners sitting

1:27:38

there going through a workout together. And,

1:27:41

but I just remember at

1:27:44

the time I left

1:27:46

and Johnny commits. And I

1:27:48

was so mad because I'm like, He

1:27:51

hasn't been here. I've been here a couple days

1:27:53

like I've been talking to the coaches like he just

1:27:55

commits on the spot And I don't even have

1:27:57

a chance to commit or whatever and I was like

1:27:59

upset about it and we're on the plane ride

1:28:01

home And I told my mom like I I want

1:28:03

to go to Washington. I had

1:28:05

got an offer from Washington Steve Sarkeesian

1:28:07

was up there and Sarke was like

1:28:09

he gave me wrote out the red

1:28:11

carpet. We had taught you know, I

1:28:14

was like, I'm going there. I'm so

1:28:16

yeah, so We're sitting there

1:28:18

on the plane and my mom's like you

1:28:20

really want to go to Washington? I was

1:28:22

like no, I mean I'd Oregon was like

1:28:24

all like everywhere I wanted to be and

1:28:26

She's like at some point time you're gonna

1:28:28

have to compete so you might so compete

1:28:30

Wherever you go, and you might as well

1:28:32

go where you want to go and she

1:28:34

told me that and that was it and

1:28:36

I committed when we got home and Kind

1:28:38

of the rest is history, but yeah, that's

1:28:40

why in it out. I was so sad

1:28:42

on being an organ duck because of Guys

1:28:44

that had played before me like there's a guy

1:28:46

named Jeremiah Masoli who went to my high school

1:28:48

had played quarterback here And I just remember watching

1:28:51

the ducks as a kid. I was like, that's

1:28:53

where I want to be Yeah, so for my

1:28:55

mom to say that to me in that point

1:28:57

in time. I was like, well, yeah, I might

1:28:59

as well compete and go where I want to

1:29:01

go So that's how I know that's awesome. That

1:29:03

is well because I did see I think there

1:29:05

was on club Shea Shea that Johnny was talking

1:29:07

about him seeing Marcus and he's like this fucking

1:29:09

guy just he talks about the work at like

1:29:11

not a ball touch the ground. Have you seen

1:29:13

that clip? That's it. Yeah. And

1:29:16

that's what I'm not going to make it at

1:29:18

Oregon. He basically said because of Marcus, I'm not going

1:29:20

to make it at Oregon and go stay in

1:29:22

him. That's wild. Yeah. Yeah.

1:29:24

Talk about growing up in Hawaii.

1:29:27

Like anytime that I've taken my family down

1:29:29

for a vacation, I've seen eight jerseys

1:29:31

in Hawaii and the culture they're like. even

1:29:33

listen to you in the interview, like

1:29:35

the perspective that you have, the peaks and

1:29:38

valleys and just the intention and the

1:29:40

moments that you seem to live in and

1:29:42

appreciate, I feel like that's all

1:29:44

over, that's all over Hawaii. Like that's like

1:29:46

Hawaiian culture. Like everybody seems to be so

1:29:48

proud of guys like yourself, Mantaiteo

1:29:50

guys who've like made it on

1:29:52

the mainland and talk about,

1:29:54

just talk about that. I'm sorry,

1:29:56

I'm like sitting there. I'm

1:29:58

like, talk about

1:30:00

it. I can talk

1:30:02

about that, man. It's funny

1:30:04

because growing up when you'd like watch the

1:30:06

news and they would like the sports would

1:30:09

come on, they would just show the athlete

1:30:11

like they wouldn't even really care about what

1:30:13

the score was. Like whether they play in

1:30:15

the NFL, MLB, like whatever, it

1:30:17

was like, hey, so and so from Hawaii

1:30:19

was two for three and hit a

1:30:21

home run or and it was like, oh,

1:30:23

by the way, like the the bosses

1:30:25

in Red Sox won the game. So like

1:30:28

very early on, like as a kid,

1:30:30

you just it was always highlighted like people

1:30:32

from Hawaii. And you kind of like

1:30:34

that was like, oh, it's like, it's the responsibility.

1:30:36

Like you want to be able to represent that the

1:30:38

best way possible. So that

1:30:40

was kind of always in my mind. And

1:30:42

then really, I think for Hawaii, like there

1:30:44

is a little bit of a chip on your

1:30:47

shoulder. Like you're not a part of the

1:30:49

continental US. So it's like, you know, the closest

1:30:51

landmass is five a half hours away. So

1:30:53

it's like, yeah, there is a little bit of

1:30:55

a chip on your shoulder. And everyone's always

1:30:57

talking about, oh, you're from Hawaii. Like, you

1:30:59

know, maybe the football is a little different down

1:31:01

there or whatever. And. it was

1:31:03

just kind of that type of chip

1:31:05

on your shoulder and people always

1:31:07

highlighting those athletes I think that really

1:31:09

just like creates like this really

1:31:12

crazy fandom you know and it's a

1:31:14

blessing in disguise and I really

1:31:16

like whenever I look back and think

1:31:18

about it like I'm very lucky

1:31:20

to be where I'm from and when

1:31:22

it's all said and done that's

1:31:24

where you'll find me somewhere on the

1:31:26

beach. I'll be like 300 pounds. But

1:31:29

yeah, yeah, dude, have you been there

1:31:32

all the rice in amazing? It's amazing.

1:31:34

Do when you go there is it

1:31:36

like a movie star showing up? No,

1:31:38

no, no, bro. It has to be

1:31:40

no Is it crazy? I'll

1:31:42

ask the missus. Do what we're

1:31:44

not walking around the mall

1:31:47

Yeah, I imagine what it's like. It's

1:31:49

really honestly not that bad. Who do you think's more

1:31:51

famous in Hawaii? You're a Manta tail Okay,

1:31:55

I get mantai. He's got his own

1:31:57

Netflix, bro. He does have his own

1:32:00

Netflix. I mean, I

1:32:02

was kind of a third part

1:32:04

of Pat and Kirk, you know,

1:32:06

they're just like, oh, we'll kind

1:32:08

of put Marcus in there. So,

1:32:10

no, dude, dude, how was that experience in

1:32:12

the quarterback? It

1:32:15

was all right.

1:32:17

Safe space. Yeah. It

1:32:20

was it was I

1:32:22

will say our crew that we

1:32:24

have for Netflix is awesome. They're unbelievable.

1:32:27

Shannon and that entire group were

1:32:29

great, especially with Kimi being pregnant with

1:32:31

her first. Very respectful of

1:32:33

the space and all that. It

1:32:36

was old though after really like a week.

1:32:38

I was like, I don't know why I signed

1:32:40

up for this. They're just in your house

1:32:42

every day all the time? Well, actually, they were

1:32:44

like for outside stuff. They were

1:32:46

cool. They were like, hey, I know Kimi's pregnant. once

1:32:50

every couple of weeks, just like,

1:32:52

let us come do something, whether it

1:32:54

was like meeting with Taylor, our

1:32:56

chef, or, you know, like

1:32:58

coming into ultrasound and different things like that.

1:33:00

So they really kind of kept a safe

1:33:02

space, but like I was mic for like

1:33:04

every practice, every game.

1:33:07

It was brutal. It's mind blowing to think that

1:33:09

you signed up for that. just kind

1:33:11

of knowing you and how

1:33:13

well I'm not gonna lie to

1:33:16

you like the money was

1:33:18

good so they said they're like

1:33:20

hey will you do this

1:33:22

for this I was like yeah

1:33:24

100 % we'll do that for

1:33:26

that we're up a step

1:33:28

1:35:55

a close, we've got you covered before

1:35:57

your favorite team goes on the clock.

1:36:08

wherever you get your podcasts. Now

1:36:12

that you're a couple years removed

1:36:14

from it from your perspective what went

1:36:16

down in Atlanta? Because there

1:36:18

are obviously stories that came out of

1:36:20

your like questioning your commitment to the

1:36:22

team obviously being a teammate of yours

1:36:24

It's like you're reading that stuff and

1:36:26

and trying to fill in whatever gaps

1:36:28

without being like hey Marcus What happened

1:36:30

in Atlanta like fresh off of Atlanta?

1:36:32

Yeah, no it was and we talked

1:36:34

about peaks and valleys like that was

1:36:36

a valley for sure I Think and

1:36:38

we all kind of know art like

1:36:40

arts are very emotional person. So I

1:36:43

think sometimes he can kind of maybe

1:36:45

say some things that give or take

1:36:47

maybe not what he wanted to say

1:36:49

or wanted to portray. And it

1:36:51

was one of those things where

1:36:53

we were all pretty aligned of like

1:36:55

what was going to happen. I

1:36:57

was signed there for two years. Yeah.

1:36:59

And it kind of flipped. And

1:37:01

I don't really know the extent why.

1:37:04

And nothing against art. Like I understand

1:37:06

being a head coach, it's a

1:37:08

hard position. I understand that it can

1:37:10

make you do some things that

1:37:13

maybe you don't want to do, right?

1:37:15

Um, but at the same time, like some things

1:37:17

were said and it was almost like I

1:37:19

just kind of had to remove myself from that

1:37:21

situation just cause I was like, first of

1:37:24

all, I didn't want to be, I never want

1:37:26

to be a distraction. Like that was never

1:37:28

the intent. Um, at the time I

1:37:30

was not sure how bad of an injury

1:37:32

I had. And when they wanted to go in

1:37:34

a different direction with Dez, I was, they

1:37:36

were like, Hey, you know, you're signed for. couple

1:37:38

years we love to have you. So

1:37:41

in my mind I was like well at that

1:37:43

point in time like let me just go make

1:37:45

sure my knees like ready to roll regardless of

1:37:47

whatever that looks like. And

1:37:49

you know unfortunately like when I left

1:37:52

to go get the surgery like things were

1:37:54

said and yeah I mean but at

1:37:56

the end the day like I saw Art

1:37:58

the other day or not the other

1:38:00

day but the season and I got nothing

1:38:02

but love for him like he gave

1:38:04

me a chance really after Vegas. Almost

1:38:07

at Oakland. Almost then

1:38:09

did. But he

1:38:12

gave me a chance to be a

1:38:14

guy, right? He gave me a chance

1:38:16

to play and I don't have any

1:38:18

towards animosity towards that. Situation

1:38:21

kind of unfolded the way that it

1:38:23

did and it was unfortunate because I think

1:38:25

at the end of the day like

1:38:27

I'm not sure my relationship with art will

1:38:29

ever really be the same. But

1:38:32

when he looked back on it like I learned

1:38:34

a lot from it and it made me Appreciate

1:38:38

being around people that care for you and

1:38:40

want you to be around. So is there

1:38:42

anything you would have done different in those

1:38:44

moments looking back on how everything unfolded? If

1:38:46

I I guess if I had known maybe

1:38:48

what was gonna be said For people, I

1:38:50

guess I don't know like he kind of

1:38:52

came out after the thing was like we

1:38:54

had a bi -week Makai was born on

1:38:56

Wednesday. He brought me in on Thursday was

1:38:59

like, hey, we're gonna go in a different

1:39:01

direction You know take some time to kind

1:39:03

of talk it through talk it to your

1:39:05

agent, whatever tough timing Yeah, tough, right? There's

1:39:07

a lot of emotions kind of built in

1:39:09

there. So,

1:39:11

you know, talk to my agent and

1:39:13

we were just like, it

1:39:15

was very much like, hey, they want you back for another

1:39:17

year. You know, you're kind of

1:39:20

technically we're not out of it,

1:39:22

but we were out of it in

1:39:24

terms of playoff positioning. He's

1:39:26

like, you know, let's just go maybe make sure

1:39:28

your knees good to go and get attacked this at

1:39:30

camp again and see where you stand. Talk

1:39:34

to art talk to Terry and that was

1:39:36

kind of we were when I left We were

1:39:38

kind of all aligned in that and my

1:39:40

thought was I was gonna go get surgery come

1:39:42

back and kind of be around and help

1:39:45

dad's if he needed it and then some things

1:39:47

were set on Monday with art and At

1:39:49

that point in time. I was like, oh, I

1:39:51

don't want to just kind of pop back

1:39:53

in and like make this a whole ordeal So

1:39:55

I'll just kind of take it on the

1:39:57

chin and just kind of step away from it

1:39:59

and You know, guys reached out and

1:40:01

called and kind of checked in to see what was going on. Um,

1:40:05

but yeah, it was just like, I

1:40:07

never want to be kind of the

1:40:09

center of attention. I just kind of want

1:40:11

to do my job and make sure

1:40:13

others around me are kind of getting

1:40:15

better and I can help them kind

1:40:17

of achieve what they want to achieve. So

1:40:20

for me, like I saw Dez after

1:40:22

the whole conversation, talked to him was like,

1:40:24

Hey man, if you ever need anything,

1:40:26

I'm here for you. Um, I'm going to

1:40:28

go get my knee fixed. but don't

1:40:30

hesitate to call or whatever. And

1:40:33

I laugh. And looking back on it, I

1:40:35

probably should have stuck around maybe until the following

1:40:37

week and just talk to the team. But

1:40:39

in my mind, I was like, I'm coming back

1:40:41

anyways. Right. You

1:40:43

felt like you were aligned. Yeah. And I

1:40:45

felt like I was like, I'm not disappearing.

1:40:47

I'm going to come back and be around.

1:40:50

But once that was said, I was like, yeah,

1:40:53

I don't think it's probably healthy for anybody for

1:40:55

me just to walk back in there. Yeah. Make

1:40:57

it awkward. Yeah. yeah

1:41:00

stepped away and you know

1:41:02

and like I said like I

1:41:04

think with art it's it's unfortunate

1:41:06

um because I do think he's

1:41:08

a good guy like and when

1:41:10

you're put in positions where it's

1:41:13

like you know maybe things aren't

1:41:15

going the way that you

1:41:17

want and things aren't really materializing

1:41:19

you know I think unfortunately it

1:41:21

can get a little bit where

1:41:25

I don't don't I don't want to say like

1:41:27

cover your ass because I really don't think

1:41:29

that's what it was I just think like he

1:41:32

didn't know what to say and I wasn't

1:41:34

there to Make any sort of comment on it,

1:41:36

and I think that's really why maybe it

1:41:38

went down that road, but The end of the

1:41:40

day I saw art like I said, I

1:41:42

don't got any hate in my heart for him.

1:41:44

I just it is what it is There's

1:41:46

just a little bit different now Yeah, that's what

1:41:48

happens, man. I mean, Art is an emotional

1:41:50

guy and he does like say a lot of

1:41:52

things and I'm sure was it was tough

1:41:54

for both of you, right? Because you guys had

1:41:56

a great relationship before the Titans and then

1:41:58

he's a head coach as well. First time he's

1:42:00

trying to figure out the best way and

1:42:02

everybody knows like you don't win games. Yeah, you're

1:42:04

gonna get fired for sure. So he's probably

1:42:06

dealing with like very similar stress as you were

1:42:08

feeling that whole entire time. So that's got

1:42:10

to be really tough for you to pivoting back

1:42:12

to when you're in for the draft. When

1:42:15

did you know like okay? I'm probably gonna be a tight and

1:42:17

did at some point do you think? Did you

1:42:19

think you're gonna go to Tampa? No, I

1:42:21

knew I wasn't in that mix but it seemed

1:42:23

like it was like James or Marcus. Yeah,

1:42:25

I went down there. I met with

1:42:27

Lovey coach Smith Jason light the GM

1:42:30

and I just didn't feel like I was

1:42:32

kind of in the mix I think

1:42:34

they were just like hey It was like

1:42:36

we want you to come in kind

1:42:38

of meet you get to know you a

1:42:40

little bit but check a box a

1:42:42

little bit Which I was like, okay, that's

1:42:44

What do you think that was? I

1:42:46

mean, you just won the Heisman, all that. I

1:42:49

had no idea. Jamis is their guy in

1:42:51

their head already. I think when you have

1:42:53

the first pick, you have opportunities to really

1:42:55

diagnose everything. And for whatever reason,

1:42:57

maybe my tape or whatever it was. But

1:43:01

I didn't really think I was

1:43:03

in that mix. But then what was

1:43:05

really interesting was I get drafted

1:43:07

to Tennessee. My agent

1:43:09

and my marketing agent pulled me in the

1:43:11

back. And they're like, hey, don't.

1:43:13

Don't put the hat on yet. Don't put

1:43:15

the jersey on yet. Like we don't really

1:43:17

know exactly what's going to happen. Like you

1:43:19

might still end up getting moved. So

1:43:22

yeah, so for like an hour,

1:43:24

I didn't, didn't take a picture, didn't

1:43:26

do the media, waited and then

1:43:28

did all that after it was like

1:43:30

confirmed. But so what was your

1:43:32

agent and your marketing guy thinking? Well,

1:43:34

Philly with chip. That's

1:43:36

right. Yeah. He had the

1:43:38

infamous quota being like you, he went past the house

1:43:40

and realized it was too much money. Something

1:43:43

like that. But I think that's what it

1:43:45

was. I don't, I can't say for certain. But

1:43:48

yeah, that was just kind of what

1:43:51

happened. And then along the lines of that,

1:43:53

when I got to Nashville, I didn't

1:43:55

have a suit or anything. So I actually

1:43:57

borrowed Wiz's like dress shirt and like

1:43:59

put on a suit coat just to do

1:44:01

the pictures and all that stuff. Cause

1:44:03

I was, I was so far in Hawaii.

1:44:05

like to get over for the next

1:44:07

day for the press conference, like we flew

1:44:09

like all night. So I didn't have

1:44:11

time to actually get a suit. I didn't even own a

1:44:13

suit really. I

1:44:16

had a couple from the had

1:44:18

a couple from the ceremonies, don't get me

1:44:20

wrong. But yeah, I didn't

1:44:22

have a suit ready to go. Did Chip or

1:44:24

anybody call you during that process? Cause obviously you

1:44:26

guys had a good relationship. They did not. Isn't

1:44:29

that weird? I feel like coming out of college

1:44:31

I'm thinking if Bo was like on a coaching

1:44:33

a team or something. I feel like I'd be

1:44:35

like hey You think I'm

1:44:37

gonna get drafted? What's the

1:44:39

board in the NFL saying? Yeah,

1:44:42

yeah, yeah. What's the board saying? And I'm

1:44:44

thinking like, if I'm gonna be a potential

1:44:46

top five pick, my head coach, who I've

1:44:48

had such an incredible relationship with during college,

1:44:50

winning the Heisman Trophy, all the accolades that

1:44:52

they got together, like you'd think like it

1:44:54

would be, there'd be some

1:44:56

communication. You know what

1:44:58

I mean? Like, hey, what are you

1:45:00

guys thinking out there, Philly? know about

1:45:03

chips at Philly. Would love to come

1:45:05

play out for you, Chip and Philly.

1:45:07

Come on. Where'd you wanna go? Filly

1:45:09

I really actually I never Never had

1:45:11

a preference. I was like no seriously,

1:45:13

but Chip Kelly who you've already had

1:45:15

so much success in his offense Yeah,

1:45:17

absolutely. He's probably thinking but I was

1:45:19

like I would go probably really awesome

1:45:22

You guys got it messed up. I'm saying

1:45:24

coming out like no one knowing how

1:45:26

how you were with Hawaii being very homesick

1:45:28

at Oregon then it's just such you

1:45:30

know So far away. Yeah, like you're still

1:45:32

a kid like actually drafted. Yeah, it's

1:45:34

like an hour and a half I love

1:45:37

to play for you coach Kelly, but

1:45:39

it's like no difference at all Distance that

1:45:41

was the first thing when I got

1:45:43

drafted my mom looks at me. She says

1:45:45

so far. I'm like, sorry mom Arizona

1:45:47

or San Diego or something like that dude,

1:45:49

I remember when you got drafted I

1:45:51

was at uh, Nissan stadium for like a,

1:45:53

they were doing like a host show

1:45:55

thing. And obviously, you know, I was massive

1:45:58

boys with met and burger and you

1:46:00

know, met's personality. So when you

1:46:02

got picked, I was like, Fuck

1:46:04

I was so mad that you were picked

1:46:06

because I was like I might have Mike

1:46:08

Zach's gonna take us to the top man

1:46:10

He's the one he's the one to get

1:46:12

it done and then I you get picked

1:46:14

whatever I immediately leave the thing I call

1:46:16

Zach I'm like where you guys are in

1:46:18

my house So I wouldn't sat with him

1:46:20

for a little bit, but I remember during

1:46:22

it was a rookie minicamp We're all kind

1:46:24

of like peering out the winter like, Hey,

1:46:26

what's this kid about? What's this Hawaiian guy

1:46:29

all about? And you were zipping the ball

1:46:31

in the field. I remember sitting there with

1:46:33

Matt thinking to myself, it's so over. You

1:46:36

are done, amigo. It

1:46:38

is done. But Zach, he

1:46:40

was such a, I mean, how, like, is

1:46:42

there anybody like Zach Mettenberger? There isn't.

1:46:44

No, there isn't. It was, I really, I

1:46:46

did enjoy my time with Matt. Like,

1:46:48

obviously when you walk in the building, like

1:46:50

that's such a weird awkward relationship could

1:46:52

not have you been around Zach? A

1:46:55

couple times completely different personality. Yeah. Yeah. Zach's like,

1:46:57

Hey, watch me spin this bitch. And Marcus is

1:46:59

like, I don't really want to be the center

1:47:01

of attention. I want to help everybody else out.

1:47:04

Whatever you guys want me to do out there.

1:47:06

Trust me, I do whatever you guys need me

1:47:08

to do. I'm there. I'm going to fucking like

1:47:10

the world on fire. But

1:47:12

I was I think that was what was cool.

1:47:14

Like when I walked in there and you know,

1:47:16

like, Wiz kind of like gave me the job

1:47:18

early on. Yeah. And I felt bad about it

1:47:20

because I was like, I hadn't I hadn't even

1:47:22

been here yet. And Being

1:47:25

around Matt like his personality like I

1:47:27

just kind of wanted to like not

1:47:29

not disrupt not not like step on

1:47:31

his toes really and being around him

1:47:33

He was very almost welcoming and he

1:47:35

was just like hey, man I know

1:47:37

you're not very vocal But like if

1:47:40

you need me to yell at somebody

1:47:42

like I'll do it for you. I

1:47:44

was like perfect man. We're on the

1:47:46

same page Just imagine you like met

1:47:48

65 get him 77 can you help

1:47:50

me out here? What

1:47:53

was what was it like walking into that

1:47:55

building because you come from a place like

1:47:57

this and then it was that was a

1:47:59

huge shock for me as I going from

1:48:01

college facilities to NFL facilities and being like

1:48:04

it's kind of a dump. Yeah. I

1:48:06

mean to put it you are you

1:48:08

are watching has newer facilities now, but even

1:48:10

going to Washington It's like you have

1:48:12

the kitchen set up and it's just like

1:48:14

buffet style food where it just has

1:48:16

a red yellow and green card on if

1:48:18

it's okay to eat You're doing walkthroughs

1:48:20

in like a basketball gym. Yeah, you know

1:48:23

what I mean? No, yeah, and it's

1:48:25

it's a dump relative to college NFL teams.

1:48:27

Yeah, so I'm not just specifically going

1:48:29

at the Titans I just remember going from

1:48:31

like Michigan. Yeah, and like Then I

1:48:33

go here and I'm like you guys got

1:48:35

a cold tub like that's around the

1:48:37

corner Well, we had this float we had

1:48:39

like the silver ones or like a

1:48:41

rubber made tub as like the cold tubs

1:48:43

that like a racpo and Fletch would

1:48:45

set up Yeah, but not like an in

1:48:47

-ground cold tub whirlpool. It is a different

1:48:49

It's a different world the old cold

1:48:51

tubs we had you were there for when

1:48:53

they went to the new setup No,

1:48:55

I didn't that I was the only thing

1:48:58

that was new was they kind of

1:49:00

redid the locker room Yeah, because they had

1:49:02

those but the bath they read the

1:49:04

locker room, but the bathroom wasn't done yet,

1:49:06

right? Yeah, so you walked into a

1:49:08

construction zone that already wasn't that great Well

1:49:10

the original one that I walked into

1:49:12

was the old one. Yeah, and I was

1:49:14

like, okay, here we go, you know,

1:49:16

this is Gonna to go out source sauna.

1:49:18

I don't think no, we had nothing

1:49:20

and we had nothing or maybe we had

1:49:22

a sauna But I don't know if

1:49:24

it was working and they had those big

1:49:26

boxy like lockers when you put your

1:49:28

shoes in the thing. And

1:49:30

you're like, well, this is such an eyesore.

1:49:33

And it made the area to walk through

1:49:35

so hard to get from point A to

1:49:37

point B. Even when I was there in

1:49:39

18, the sauna was broken like the

1:49:41

entire year. It was just the steam room that was open.

1:49:43

Were you there when the kid got cut and he pissed

1:49:45

in the sauna? No. You

1:49:47

weren't there. I don't remember that. There was one kid. Yeah.

1:49:49

He got cut like, I think halfway through camp, even before

1:49:51

cuts. And you watch, we watched in the locker room. It's

1:49:53

the most terrible in here. And some guys like, yeah, babe.

1:49:55

I think it was awesome. Yeah, babe. So many piss in

1:49:57

the sun. Some

1:49:59

guy just like peed on the hot

1:50:01

Santa Coles. And that was his like tip

1:50:04

of the cap. I'll see you guys

1:50:06

later. But yeah, it's just different. It's just

1:50:08

different going from college to NFL. So

1:50:10

how was that for that transition? I

1:50:13

was I think I was just like so happy to

1:50:15

be there. I didn't really think about it. Looking

1:50:18

back on it, it

1:50:20

was not the

1:50:22

greatest, but it

1:50:24

is what it

1:50:26

was. How was it keeping

1:50:28

like compartmentalizing, playing ball to the best of your

1:50:30

ability, and also the expectation of being a

1:50:32

second overall pick? I want to say you're the

1:50:34

highest. I mean, oh yeah, we did interview

1:50:36

James, but we didn't ask him about this. But

1:50:38

I feel like being a high. a

1:50:41

high overall pick as a quarterback

1:50:43

I'm always curious like do you feel

1:50:45

that pressure expectation yeah I think

1:50:47

but I think I it was more

1:50:49

from myself like more internal like

1:50:51

I was more worried about like me

1:50:53

living out to my own standard

1:50:56

um which I think sometimes can be

1:50:58

detrimental as well yeah but yeah

1:51:00

I was so so focused on making

1:51:02

sure I was like trying to

1:51:04

play to the best of my abilities

1:51:06

and maybe I lost a little

1:51:08

bit of being able to just enjoy

1:51:10

what was going on. Staying light.

1:51:13

Yeah. That first

1:51:15

game, man. Obviously, we talked

1:51:17

to James and we're like, hey, did you have a... like

1:51:19

kind of like a rivalry with Marcus at all. He

1:51:21

was like, yeah, we kind of did. I saw parts of

1:51:23

it. Yeah. So he was kind of talking about like

1:51:25

how there was like kind of a rivalry. Yeah. And like

1:51:27

kind of wasn't. And then you guys like made amends

1:51:29

or whatever. He probably made amends. He was talking about you

1:51:31

guys were like a combine training. And the way he's

1:51:33

thinking in his head is like he's like bucking up kind

1:51:36

of peacocking a little bit. Like it felt like a

1:51:38

competition. Which has got to be the funniest thing. He's like

1:51:40

Marcus wasn't really given a whole lot. And just knowing

1:51:42

you, I'm thinking, I wonder if Marcus was even thinking about

1:51:44

that. Even aware that a rivalry was taking place. Marcus

1:51:46

is like just doing his work. And James is like. Flexing

1:51:49

the corner. Well, it's

1:51:51

funny because we never even worked out together. Really?

1:51:54

So the guy that we trained with, Ryan Flaherty, one

1:51:57

of my closest friends still to this day, he

1:51:59

tried to time it out where we were separate.

1:52:01

Because I think he felt like that was what

1:52:03

it was. And I literally

1:52:05

was like, that's not

1:52:07

something that crosses my mind. Jamis

1:52:10

isn't there working out. Cool. I don't care.

1:52:12

Didn't Jamis say he would see Marcus working on

1:52:14

Beck? I don't want to go in there. Am

1:52:17

I just making that up? I think

1:52:19

that might be like a little bit seasoned.

1:52:22

Like you put a little extra sauce

1:52:24

on that, but there was definitely like

1:52:26

a... It was a true competition. true

1:52:28

workout. Yeah, that's CTE brain for both

1:52:30

of us. It was definitely something like

1:52:32

two months ago. Yeah, but that

1:52:34

first game, like it is what it is. We

1:52:36

kind of talked about it a little bit,

1:52:38

but like, did you... Let's do it again. Were

1:52:40

you excited to kind of put to... Man,

1:52:43

what? I was like, we got this.

1:52:45

You're like all the fame. I mean, your

1:52:47

first touchdown. That's this easy? How

1:52:49

did this DNFL? Your first

1:52:51

throw was a touchdown, yeah? No,

1:52:53

no. I think that was like maybe the

1:52:55

third or fourth. The one to Kendall. Yeah.

1:52:57

Yeah, that was like the third or fourth.

1:52:59

My first throw, I'll never forget, was

1:53:01

roll pass. I understand a roll pass to the

1:53:04

right. We just run to the left, by the

1:53:06

way. It was to

1:53:08

the back was like the first read. And

1:53:10

you're nervous. It's your first game playing

1:53:12

in an NFL. I was going

1:53:14

number one the whole way and I

1:53:17

threw it to Bishop and he got smoked

1:53:19

by Lavante David. I was like, sick.

1:53:21

Good start. Good

1:53:24

start. We rolled

1:53:26

them, man. And then literally

1:53:28

halfway through that year, Wiz

1:53:30

and Hunt's gone. And then

1:53:32

your boy took the reins.

1:53:34

Oh, Malarkey. Do

1:53:37

you want to talk about it? Absolutely.

1:53:41

Now, before we start. Malarkey's the

1:53:43

one that you did not like. I

1:53:45

am on record saying I despised Mike

1:53:47

Malarkey. Okay. Yeah, I'm on record. Is

1:53:49

that the one where you had the C patch

1:53:51

and got it taken away? Actually, you

1:53:53

and I should iron out. They took my

1:53:55

C and gave it to you. That's

1:53:59

pretty crazy, right? I

1:54:02

also owe you a lot of fine money, too.

1:54:05

What's that? I said, I also owe you a

1:54:07

lot of fine money, too. No, no, no. I

1:54:09

love doing that. That was like my favorite thing

1:54:11

in the world was bucking up for eight. Hey,

1:54:13

that's funny. Your C got taken away in the

1:54:15

markets. Yeah, I didn't realize

1:54:17

that's what it was. They're

1:54:19

like, hey, here's just. You got a CPATCH. I was

1:54:21

like, oh, OK, cool. So we

1:54:24

played Houston. Let

1:54:26

me relive this for a second. We played Houston. We

1:54:28

get donkey stomped in Houston and on the

1:54:30

way home. I think I before the wheels even

1:54:33

touch for like Ken's out of here. The

1:54:35

next day, news breaks, Ken was and how it's

1:54:37

out. Mike Malarkey stepping as interim head coach. Text.

1:54:41

No, I'm sitting at home and Mike

1:54:43

Malarkey texts me and he's like, hey,

1:54:45

come see me in my office tomorrow. And

1:54:48

I was like, all right. His first

1:54:50

day there. This is like the night

1:54:52

after the night of the news breaking

1:54:54

of Ken. This is like, this is

1:54:56

like, so it's Monday. Tuesday, I walk in

1:54:58

his office and I literally made the joke, taking

1:55:01

my C away. And he goes,

1:55:03

yeah, we're going to take your C away. Here's

1:55:05

the deal. Was Malarkey there with Wizzner? Malarkey

1:55:07

was the tight ends coach. Okay. All right. Tight

1:55:09

ends coach, which Malarkey is a tight ends

1:55:11

coach all time guy. Like he had a good

1:55:13

vibe about him. was like one of the

1:55:15

boys, boys type of thing. He got that crown

1:55:17

placed on his head and a whole lot

1:55:19

of things changed. A whole lot

1:55:21

of things changed. His first order of business. His

1:55:23

first order of business. And you know what his reasoning

1:55:25

was? His reasoning, he goes to

1:55:27

me, he goes, hey, listen, like, obviously the

1:55:29

team's not doing very well right now. You're a young

1:55:31

guy. And this is a lot to be like

1:55:33

putting on you to have a seat on your chest.

1:55:36

So like, we're just going to take it. We'll

1:55:38

let you focus on being you and give to somebody

1:55:40

older. Then they called Marcus

1:55:42

who's a huge me. I don't think that was me though.

1:55:44

I don't think they gave it to me. I don't remember

1:55:46

having this. Marcus, there's only four captains and they took mine

1:55:48

off and they gave one to you. Like where do you

1:55:50

think that C came from? How were you playing at this

1:55:52

time? I was playing alright. I

1:55:54

think my rookie year was better. I played better my

1:55:56

rookie year than I did my second, but I

1:55:58

wasn't. Were you a distraction in the locker room? No,

1:56:00

I don't think so. I mean, was I? No.

1:56:04

He was distraction. I was more of a

1:56:06

distraction playing. He was a distraction in the

1:56:08

huddle. Yes. Delaney used to be like, Taylor.

1:56:10

get over you Taylor be over there talking

1:56:12

to who knows who and we're like 30

1:56:14

seconds on the play clock and over there

1:56:16

trying to call the play and I'm like

1:56:18

we're like where's Taylor and Delaney's like Taylor

1:56:20

get your ass over here a lot of

1:56:22

shit talking was over

1:56:24

there. It was kind of spout. I'm like, he doesn't really need to know the play.

1:56:26

Like Ben's going to tell him what to do anyway. That

1:56:30

did. Yeah. Ben kind of just did would

1:56:32

say one thing. We got it. We got it.

1:56:34

We had a nice operation. But yeah, he

1:56:36

took to see. I totally forgot that he gave

1:56:38

it to you. And it literally didn't

1:56:40

register. This is how dumb I am. It didn't register to

1:56:42

like three weeks later that like, oh, he told me he's

1:56:44

to give somebody older. And then he gave it to a

1:56:46

guy a year like in his rookie season. Yeah.

1:56:48

That's tough. That was tough. But I do think

1:56:51

I got to see. I think a reason why I

1:56:53

got to see was Ken knew he was on the

1:56:55

hot. They're like the chopping block. And

1:56:57

I was his first round pick. The

1:56:59

year prior. Got you. And so there was like,

1:57:01

I think it was a politic game for him because

1:57:04

even some of the older guys were like, what

1:57:06

are you? Yeah, I'm like, come on, man. But Marcus

1:57:08

is that Malarkey is one of his boys. Yeah,

1:57:11

go ahead, Marcus. Yeah, I

1:57:13

mean, Mike's. Been good to

1:57:15

me, so I can't I can't

1:57:17

talk trash about it I'm not

1:57:19

gonna play the politically neutral game

1:57:21

here. That's smart, you know that

1:57:23

is smart But we beat the

1:57:25

Saints in overtime. We did right

1:57:28

after that and didn't want another

1:57:30

one. I threw The luckiest touch

1:57:32

on my life to Delaney. Oh

1:57:34

my goodness. I was trying to

1:57:36

throw it away They brought fire

1:57:38

zone. I'm a rookie. I don't

1:57:40

protections is just like whatever You

1:57:42

know, I'll figure it out later.

1:57:45

And they basically brought four to the side and I

1:57:47

was hot. And I was just like, I'm just

1:57:50

going to try to throw it away. And I threw

1:57:52

it in the direction of Delaney who was running

1:57:54

a sail route. When I threw it, I was like,

1:57:56

I didn't put enough on that. And then I'm

1:57:58

like watching the ball. And I see Delaney start track

1:58:00

it. And then Jerry's bird, I

1:58:02

think, I think it was Jerry's bird.

1:58:04

Played at Oregon, by the way. Stud. Dude,

1:58:06

he hits it up in the air.

1:58:08

Delaney catches it, scores like a 60 yard

1:58:10

touchdown. I was like, wow. Isn't

1:58:12

the Saints really still the Saints too?

1:58:14

Yeah, I mean Drew was there. Yeah,

1:58:17

that didn't the field go go off the

1:58:19

upright to go in the overtime? For

1:58:21

us or them them like they missed

1:58:23

it. remember I got I was it was

1:58:25

a was a fesano or Stevens who

1:58:28

won those fesano fesano fesano Yeah, 15 was

1:58:30

a tough year. It was a tough

1:58:32

year, but you're probably you're just getting your

1:58:34

feet. Well, I was just trying to

1:58:36

swimming Yeah, just try to tread water you

1:58:38

made that whole season did not I

1:58:41

did not not at all when

1:58:43

I was in Tennessee, but yeah,

1:58:45

but 15 like are off the

1:58:47

line Ben wasn't there yet Ben

1:58:49

wasn't there. It was me chance

1:58:51

Andy Gaelic Andy Gaelic, but it

1:58:53

was Schwenke before Schwenke and then

1:58:55

kind of a revolving door at

1:58:57

right garden left and right tackle

1:58:59

So you didn't have a whole

1:59:01

lot of protection and the offense

1:59:03

we were running was insane For

1:59:06

an offensive line that wasn't seasoned

1:59:08

We I have a funny story about

1:59:10

that we so quarterback wristband, right?

1:59:12

No, I didn't really I never wore

1:59:15

one. We were no hudder here.

1:59:17

I was like no huddle in high

1:59:19

school. So I mean

1:59:21

first game they gave me one

1:59:23

we did fine second game were

1:59:25

playing up in Cleveland and The

1:59:27

numbers for the wristband or one

1:59:29

through whatever I think there was

1:59:31

like 80 90 hundred maybe hundred

1:59:33

plays or whatever and I

1:59:35

took a sack is like two

1:59:37

minute and our two -minute menu with

1:59:39

whiz was one through ten So

1:59:41

he's yelling for four four, so

1:59:44

I'm not getting everybody in the

1:59:46

huddle. I'm going off wristband for

1:59:48

well the first like five plays

1:59:50

of The wristband are usually like

1:59:52

specials or like, you know trick

1:59:54

plays so I don't know it's

1:59:56

like With like minute and ten

1:59:58

seconds left before half and I

2:00:00

call this play and it's a

2:00:02

reverse to Harry Douglas And

2:00:05

I'm I'm like getting ready to call and

2:00:07

like people are looking at me like you sure

2:00:09

about this I'm like that's what they said

2:00:11

for and I I'm like I take this now

2:00:13

we do the the reverse to Harry we

2:00:15

get tackled for like a five -yard loss or

2:00:17

whatever I Come up to the sideline. He was

2:00:19

what were you doing? Why'd you come like

2:00:21

you said for like I'm looking at play four

2:00:23

on the wristband? He goes. Oh

2:00:25

No, no, no, we're talking about

2:00:27

play four on the two -minute menu.

2:00:29

I was like that's tough Five

2:00:31

-yard loss. Yeah calling the reverse God,

2:00:34

two minute drill. I

2:00:36

was 16, man. I mean, once

2:00:39

we got Ben in, it seems like

2:00:41

that's when everything kind of changed for

2:00:43

our offense. I would talk

2:00:45

about your relationship with Ben and how

2:00:47

important he was for you at those

2:00:49

times because I had to grow to

2:00:52

love Ben as opposed to like appreciating

2:00:54

him for who he was in the

2:00:56

beginning. He was for me from the

2:00:58

start was unbelievable. Guy that's played

2:01:00

at a high level. Nose

2:01:02

the ins and outs of protections Like

2:01:04

I mean my first my rookie year

2:01:06

like I had to go up there

2:01:09

and like make a mic point and

2:01:11

like which I was fine with but

2:01:13

like I don't understand like trying to

2:01:15

make mic points like in the run

2:01:17

game and like I'm over there like

2:01:19

I don't care like the wheels of

2:01:21

Mike. I don't who cares. Yeah I

2:01:23

never understood any of that, you know

2:01:26

and so getting Ben into The

2:01:28

team like he controlled all that and we

2:01:30

were able to like he taught me a lot

2:01:32

about protections We're able to get like on

2:01:34

the same page and a lot of times in

2:01:36

protections I would be like hey, you know,

2:01:38

he's seeing one thing I'm like, hey, no no

2:01:40

go left go left go left and he

2:01:42

would make all the calls Everybody would switch up

2:01:44

and we'd be good So I I mean

2:01:46

Ben was heaven sent for me and I think

2:01:48

for all of us really like he was

2:01:50

just such a glue guy and Thankful that I

2:01:52

was able to play with him was a

2:01:54

hard going through so many coaching changes It

2:01:58

was wasn't easy. I mean but a

2:02:00

part of it is I think again,

2:02:02

it's like I was so naive to

2:02:05

it I was like nah, man, like

2:02:07

I'll make it work Yeah, look whoever's

2:02:09

in here, whatever he's called but looking

2:02:11

back on it like I think on

2:02:13

my 11 see this will be my

2:02:15

11th season. I've had nine different playcalls

2:02:17

Yeah, and I think like looking back

2:02:19

on it like that is kind of

2:02:22

crazy and I was This

2:02:24

was about 2018, we had Blaine Gabbard.

2:02:26

BG, my guy. Watch Daddy spin

2:02:28

it. Yeah, hell yeah. Just fighting for one

2:02:30

more every year. Just being

2:02:32

in the training room. Blaine's awesome. He's got a

2:02:34

great vibe about him. He does. He does. And

2:02:36

I remember we were sitting there one meeting and

2:02:38

he was like, yeah, this is my eighth season.

2:02:40

This is my eighth different play call. And I

2:02:42

was like, damn, man, it's crazy.

2:02:45

Like I'm on five and this is like

2:02:47

four. It's kind of crazy to think about.

2:02:49

Yeah. Talk about the transition

2:02:51

to Washington. It feels like you

2:02:53

found some footing there. You opted

2:02:55

to go back. I know

2:02:57

you were having your presser and talked about if

2:02:59

you were to get an offer from another

2:03:01

team, they would have had to have knocked it

2:03:03

out of the park for you to leave

2:03:05

because you accepted, you love the role, you love

2:03:07

the organization, you love the team. But

2:03:10

talk about your time in Washington. Yes,

2:03:12

it was awesome. I

2:03:14

mean, aside from maybe our first couple of years,

2:03:16

it was probably the most fun I had. in

2:03:19

the NFL just from a day

2:03:21

-to -day basis. And

2:03:23

what was really cool was when I was in

2:03:25

free agency last year and they called me up,

2:03:27

like DQ's message to, at least to me, and

2:03:29

it sounds like it was like to a lot

2:03:31

of other guys was, I want to create the

2:03:33

best environment to come play football. And

2:03:36

I was like, okay, you know,

2:03:38

sounds good, right? Sounds good in theory.

2:03:40

And when I showed up there

2:03:42

being around Cliff, being around Tavita and

2:03:44

the rest the staff, like, He

2:03:46

really created this type of

2:03:49

environment where it's just man,

2:03:51

have fun, cut loose, like

2:03:53

be who you are. And

2:03:55

we're going to roll and

2:03:57

win games. And from a

2:03:59

person he's like unbelievable,

2:04:01

like comes up to everybody's

2:04:03

wife, like kids, like he's

2:04:06

very personable. And I think

2:04:08

that's where you get guys to just

2:04:10

play hard for you. And being around him

2:04:12

and being around the core group of

2:04:14

guys like Zach and Bobby and, um, When

2:04:16

you got a group that really just

2:04:18

kind of enjoys being around each other like

2:04:20

you find ways to win and I

2:04:22

think for me somebody else if I had

2:04:25

an opportunity to go play was gonna

2:04:27

have to really like kind of show me

2:04:29

that was possible because I feel like

2:04:31

I play my best in that type of

2:04:33

environment and I'm I'm fortunate and I'm

2:04:35

excited to be back and I'm looking forward

2:04:37

to kind of seeing what what we

2:04:39

can make of it. When did you know

2:04:41

that JD had it? Yeah,

2:04:44

that's funny. Everyone kind of asked

2:04:46

me that like we you know like

2:04:48

OTA is everyone's kind of like

2:04:50

yeah, you know, he looks good like

2:04:52

in camp, you know, it looks

2:04:54

good everyone Yeah, you know But I

2:04:56

would say for me personally it

2:04:58

was probably against Cincinnati on Monday night

2:05:00

and Like his demeanor the moment

2:05:02

like the moment was never too big

2:05:04

for him like he was ready

2:05:06

to roll from the get -go and

2:05:08

I watched him go and just like

2:05:11

dissect the defense and it was probably from

2:05:13

my vantage point probably one of the

2:05:15

better games that I've seen a quarterback boy

2:05:18

and whether it was running making guys

2:05:20

miss to completing fourth fourth and five or

2:05:22

fourth and six to like keep drives

2:05:24

alive to score touchdowns like he was unbelievable

2:05:26

and I was like if this kid

2:05:28

can continue to do that or kind of

2:05:30

play in that realm like he's gonna

2:05:32

be really special and He found a way

2:05:34

kind of throughout the year to do

2:05:36

that. I was in the film room as

2:05:38

like a student of the game. He's

2:05:40

very knowledgeable and what's been cool for

2:05:42

me is like I've been able to just

2:05:45

like from my past experiences be like

2:05:47

hey this is like something that happened to

2:05:49

me just be aware of it and

2:05:51

like to see him recognize that and realize

2:05:53

that and do maybe what I'm not

2:05:55

saying he was doing what I was saying

2:05:57

but like just being able to like

2:05:59

account that type of information and use it

2:06:01

like was really cool for me and

2:06:04

it's pretty pretty spot on about how he

2:06:06

is as a person. Like he comes

2:06:08

in, works hard, goes about his business and

2:06:10

moves on. And I think he's got

2:06:12

a chance to be really good. Is

2:06:15

he a vocal guy? Um, yes

2:06:17

and no. And what's cool

2:06:19

is like when you have a group

2:06:21

of veterans, um, you

2:06:23

can kind of get, you kind of encourage it. And

2:06:25

towards the end of the year, you could really see

2:06:27

it from him. And what's been

2:06:29

nice about DQ though is he's like,

2:06:31

don't, we don't ever want to be somebody

2:06:33

else that you're not. And

2:06:35

if you're not vocal, if you're not like, don't

2:06:37

force it. Which

2:06:39

I think for Jay has been really good because

2:06:41

then he kind of like, he's able to create

2:06:44

that type of leadership for himself and is able

2:06:46

to relate to guys and kind of get the

2:06:48

most out of them. Oh,

2:06:50

sorry, go ahead. I was gonna

2:06:52

say, what is it about DQ's culture? You talked

2:06:54

about his intention, how he's personable, he's great with

2:06:56

people, he goes up to wives. What

2:06:59

is it about like his day to day

2:07:01

in the season? Say you drop a game. We've

2:07:03

all been in the locker rooms where it's

2:07:05

like the urgency and maybe coach is kind of,

2:07:07

you know, the negative energy is kind of

2:07:09

in the building. But what is it about DQ's

2:07:11

culture on the day to day, like in

2:07:13

the grind of the season? Because anybody you talk

2:07:15

to about DQ, everybody talks about how great

2:07:17

his culture is. We

2:07:20

hit a stretch last year where we lost three in a

2:07:22

row. Did his

2:07:24

demeanor at all change? Not one

2:07:26

bit. And His

2:07:28

day to day is always the same. Like, you know what you're

2:07:30

going to get on Monday. Tell the truth,

2:07:32

Monday. You go and you get the

2:07:34

day off on Tuesday and it's fundamental

2:07:37

Wednesday. It's turnover Thursday and it's fast

2:07:39

Fridays. And it's the same

2:07:41

regardless if you're winning or not. So

2:07:43

you're not showing up after blowing out

2:07:45

whoever and getting a Monday off. Like

2:07:47

it's, we're going to do the same

2:07:49

exact thing. So regardless of the,

2:07:51

of how the results are and

2:07:53

like his preparation and process remains the

2:07:55

same. And. A lot of that

2:07:57

too, like, is not football. It's

2:08:00

kind of wild. Like, I've never been a part

2:08:02

of a team where on Saturday, he

2:08:04

doesn't talk about football at

2:08:06

all. And this is a day before the game. And

2:08:09

you're sitting down and I remember the first

2:08:11

week, I'm like, I mean, should we like talk

2:08:13

about like, hey, keys to victory or, you

2:08:16

know, some of these things, you know? And

2:08:18

he has Dylan Thompson, who

2:08:20

shout out is like, unbelievable.

2:08:23

Um, but he goes up there and

2:08:25

he, he leads like a life lesson

2:08:27

and like a talk about how you

2:08:29

can become better men. And for

2:08:31

me, like being a part of the NFL for

2:08:33

10 years, like you never see that. It's

2:08:35

never been about that. But when you can step

2:08:37

aside and realize that football is just a

2:08:40

little bit of what you do. It's not who

2:08:42

you are. I think you really kind of

2:08:44

galvanize a group and guys really reacted to it.

2:08:46

And I don't think it was any surprise

2:08:48

for any of us in that building that how

2:08:50

well we did and how far we went.

2:08:52

just because of DQ and what he's about. I

2:08:55

love that. That is beautiful. You

2:08:58

brought up a point that a lot of football players

2:09:00

say a lot, which is like football is what you

2:09:02

do is who you are. How do you stop that

2:09:04

from becoming your identity for you? I

2:09:07

didn't. I still struggle with

2:09:09

that. And I think from

2:09:11

my transition in Tennessee after

2:09:13

everything had kind of fallen

2:09:15

apart, like I was

2:09:17

like didn't know what to do. Same

2:09:20

with Atlanta like I was you know,

2:09:22

it's funny like you think you're able

2:09:24

to learn from previous Challenges obstacles and

2:09:26

I thought I did but when everything

2:09:28

had happened in Atlanta like I was

2:09:30

like man this is all over again

2:09:32

like I'm I'm pretty good like I

2:09:35

don't need to do this football thing

2:09:37

like it's just kind of it's tearing

2:09:39

me apart like I was like over

2:09:41

it and It really led to me

2:09:43

being in Philly with Howie in the

2:09:45

GM and It's kind of started

2:09:47

talking to some like sports psychologist my

2:09:49

agent had recommended one who I still

2:09:51

talk to today and Howie like I

2:09:53

went to Philly after Atlanta, bro. It

2:09:56

was like the worst camp I've ever

2:09:58

had. I couldn't even hit a shallow

2:10:00

route I was like dirting flat routes

2:10:02

like and how he like comes over

2:10:04

and he's like hey, man I really

2:10:06

just want you to like kind of

2:10:08

dig into your mental side a little

2:10:10

bit and so I did and Really,

2:10:12

I think through the course of that

2:10:14

season I kind of started to maybe

2:10:16

get away from my identity as a

2:10:18

football player and more as my identity

2:10:20

as a You know a husband a

2:10:22

father a son a brother and It's

2:10:24

so hard because I think as athletes

2:10:26

like we sit here and forever That's

2:10:28

your sport or whatever you do. That's

2:10:30

like how you identify yourself and you

2:10:32

sit in these meetings The PA does

2:10:35

all these meetings, right? Like oh, you

2:10:37

know You're not you're not just a

2:10:39

football player and you like sit there

2:10:41

like I know I'm not like a

2:10:43

whatever but like you really don't know

2:10:45

Kind until you have something kind of

2:10:47

thrown in your face to realize like

2:10:50

oh, maybe I am really kind of

2:10:52

identify myself as that so for me

2:10:54

like I take call it an hour

2:10:56

a week and I talk and It's

2:10:58

a little bit about football like how

2:11:00

can I get better mentally? But it's

2:11:02

a lot of it's just like unleashing

2:11:04

like things that are going on whether

2:11:06

it's me inside internally or like from

2:11:08

like as a father or Like just

2:11:10

little things like that. And it's kind

2:11:12

of crazy to think about how much

2:11:15

these external things really affect your internal

2:11:17

and being able to understand that internally,

2:11:19

if you control kind of what, how

2:11:21

you feel and how you reacted things,

2:11:23

like you're going to be better for

2:11:25

it. So I was so easy for

2:11:27

me throughout my time, especially in Tennessee,

2:11:29

where like, I would just shoulder everything.

2:11:31

Like you can put the blame me.

2:11:33

I don't care. Like I'll figure it

2:11:35

out. And you don't really realize how

2:11:37

much that affects you until like, maybe it's all

2:11:39

said and done. You're like, dude, like. I

2:11:42

could have been a better teammate. I could have

2:11:44

been a better person, depending on how, you know, it

2:11:46

all would have played out. But, yeah.

2:11:48

I had one and I lost it.

2:11:50

That's okay. That's part of cutting it.

2:11:52

Yeah. Yeah. You kind of want to

2:11:54

do it. Yeah. What are some of

2:11:56

your fondest memories? Because, like, for me,

2:11:58

when I have you on the show...

2:12:00

I just start racing in my brain

2:12:02

about all the times we had in

2:12:04

Tennessee. And then Will jumps over to

2:12:06

Commanders and I'm thinking, like, how do

2:12:08

I bring this back to Tennessee? And

2:12:10

then we go to Oregon and I'm

2:12:12

like, how do I bring this back

2:12:14

to Tennessee? Because it was... Because having

2:12:16

this conversation, you realize how it ended,

2:12:18

how tough it was for you, but

2:12:20

still being a national this day. Like,

2:12:22

every single Titans fan is like, yo,

2:12:24

mark it, the fucking Marigoda. like

2:12:26

everyone is still like sees you as this

2:12:28

when I talk to you now and you're

2:12:31

not seeing yourself as that at that time

2:12:33

when everybody in Nashville is like still so

2:12:35

proud of like eight and they're like all

2:12:37

about it which is which to me is

2:12:39

like says a lot about you as a

2:12:41

player but it also says so much about

2:12:43

your character and how you're just talking about

2:12:45

like shouldering things like I remember vividly like

2:12:47

when things weren't going well I would see

2:12:49

you I would watch you and you would

2:12:51

know you would never emotional And

2:12:53

I think I even said to you one time, was like, maybe you should

2:12:56

like show a little bit more emotion. His wife's price

2:12:58

of that tone. Yeah. But

2:13:00

there was one specific time and it was like towards

2:13:02

the end where I remember we were like going out

2:13:04

like it was halftime. And I was one of the

2:13:06

last ones the locker room and you like let out

2:13:08

a scream and like slam your fist on the on

2:13:10

the locker. And I remember thinking to myself, good, like

2:13:12

that's he needs that. And I think we ended up

2:13:14

going like winning that game. But I want us to

2:13:16

know like kind of your fond memories because there's been

2:13:18

a lot we talked about. We thought about a lot

2:13:20

of valleys here, but like it doesn't take away from

2:13:22

like. how good of a player you

2:13:24

are, how much you've accomplished in your life. So

2:13:27

I just want to roll down memory lane, which No, I like it.

2:13:29

I like it. Gosh.

2:13:32

One of my favorite memories in

2:13:34

Tennessee. Huh? 13 Wolverine.

2:13:38

That's still a deal. Is

2:13:40

that a fond memory for you? Oh man. You

2:13:42

talking about Titans or? Yeah. That's

2:13:45

all I know. How do we

2:13:47

bring this back to Tennessee? How do we bring it

2:13:49

here? Yeah, how do we bring it back here?

2:13:51

Yeah, to me. Like 13 Wolverine. That's the only thing

2:13:53

I know. Right, exactly. Gosh,

2:13:57

my favorite memory is probably got

2:13:59

to be we played Jacksonville at home

2:14:01

to get in the playoffs. And

2:14:04

17 was kind of up and

2:14:06

down here for me. Falling

2:14:09

a lot of injuries. I was kind

2:14:11

of not playing great. We

2:14:14

had a fumble exchange with Derek

2:14:16

and Yannick ends up getting the ball

2:14:19

and returns it for a touchdown.

2:14:21

And I remember Sinner like, dude, no

2:14:23

way. We're about to lose this

2:14:25

game. We

2:14:27

were at the time, I think we were like eight

2:14:29

and four before we went to the West Coast. And

2:14:31

I was like, we were Sinner trying to just scratch

2:14:33

and claw to get in. And

2:14:35

I remember we get the ball back. We're

2:14:37

just trying to hold the lead. It

2:14:40

was third and five or third and

2:14:42

six. I

2:14:44

took the snap, I probably could have thrown Delaney

2:14:46

the ball. I mean, never wrong throwing Delaney

2:14:48

the ball. But I

2:14:50

scrambled and I took off to the left and

2:14:52

I ended up getting the first down. And

2:14:55

I remember sliding and looking up

2:14:57

to the stand, I was trying to

2:14:59

find my family. And I kind

2:15:01

of spiked the ball. That was kind of like the

2:15:03

most emotional thing I've ever done. I

2:15:05

was just like, for all that was

2:15:07

going on that year for me personally,

2:15:09

just being hurt, not playing

2:15:11

well. I was like, kind of threw the ball

2:15:14

down. I was like, yeah, I know I can

2:15:16

still do this. And I remember getting that first

2:15:18

down and Delaney had to grab me because he

2:15:20

thought I was going to say something. I think

2:15:22

it was church, maybe something like that. Yeah, because

2:15:24

you did do the stair down. Yeah. But

2:15:27

it was nothing to him. It was nothing

2:15:29

to him. I just had so much emotion built

2:15:31

up, I think, from kind of that year

2:15:33

in 17. But

2:15:36

that's a fond memory for me because it was

2:15:38

like, Regardless of what was going

2:15:40

on like we still find a way to

2:15:42

win and like Delaney being there having my

2:15:44

back having having made sure I was like

2:15:46

not doing too much But like hey, we

2:15:48

got another game to play and like for

2:15:50

us to get in I don't know what

2:15:52

it was like maybe a while since we

2:15:54

had been in the playoffs for Tennessee So

2:15:56

being able to do that at home in

2:15:58

Nashville was was a special moment for me

2:16:01

and then I Mean who can forget the

2:16:03

Kansas City game like that was wild. Yeah,

2:16:05

it was a 21 -3. Oh my goodness

2:16:07

at halftime We should never won that game.

2:16:09

I never should have won that game. You

2:16:11

threw a touchdown pass to yourself. I

2:16:15

remember where I was when you guys came

2:16:17

back. Like I was in my buddy John

2:16:19

Wigger, I was in his basement. We were

2:16:21

playing pool. Yeah, we were

2:16:23

playing pool and I remember seeing it half

2:16:25

time like this isn't even a game. And

2:16:28

then by the end of it, it's like

2:16:30

these motherfuckers came back and won. Yes. Beat

2:16:32

him. That's another really fun memory. That

2:16:34

was the coldest game I've ever played in

2:16:37

my life. That was brutal.

2:16:39

That stretch was cold. Jacksonville

2:16:41

at home was cold. Jacksonville at home

2:16:43

to Kansas City. Then we went to New England. Got

2:16:46

donkied. Which we got

2:16:48

murdered. Bro, Philip's super long came

2:16:50

up to me. It was like,

2:16:52

I don't know, we're losing whatever

2:16:54

it was. And he was,

2:16:56

bro, I'm open down the middle. I'm like, Philip.

2:16:59

It doesn't matter, bro. It's over. It

2:17:01

is so done. Oh, that Kansas City

2:17:03

game was awesome. Yes. Do you ever

2:17:05

regret whenever we tried to put in

2:17:07

technological place for me, you're throwing the

2:17:09

ball too fast in practice and I

2:17:12

would drop it and then they would

2:17:14

take it out. I know, but

2:17:16

there was a lot of opportunities before then as well. And

2:17:18

I specifically remember you rocketing a

2:17:21

few just above my head and it

2:17:23

felt very intentional. It was

2:17:25

intentional. I knew it was intentional. It

2:17:27

was more just a laugh at practice,

2:17:29

but then... I felt my dreams slipping

2:17:31

through my fingers every single time you

2:17:33

threw that football. Mark's saying if he

2:17:36

can handle these, he'll get again. Exactly.

2:17:38

It's one of them build confidence. I

2:17:40

know. I was so nervous. That's

2:17:42

all I got. Going back to

2:17:44

a Can I call real quick? We

2:17:47

were sitting there and we had this

2:17:49

tackle -eligible play against the Colts and

2:17:51

we had practiced it all week and

2:17:53

he had dropped it. I remember going

2:17:55

into it. Every time. And

2:17:58

I remember coming in through the headset,

2:18:01

and I'm like, I'm just gonna throw it at his

2:18:03

body so he can't drop it. So

2:18:05

I come out of it, come out of the fake, and

2:18:07

I see him go like this, his eyes are so big

2:18:09

at me like this. Hey,

2:18:11

I was so nervous. He's

2:18:14

never nervous about anything. And I

2:18:16

can still remember his eyes like

2:18:18

this. And I threw like a

2:18:20

little, like just at his stomach. Like you're throwing to

2:18:22

your, like you're throwing to Rue. Trying to keep trying

2:18:24

to catch your ball for the first time. Muffin'

2:18:27

it right in there. Thank you. Turn around and score

2:18:29

the test now. Oh yeah, dude. Back

2:18:31

in the pockets now that have fired me up. We

to return to the postseason. And how

2:19:51

teams with new coaches should approach the

2:19:54

draft. So as draft season comes to

2:19:56

a close, we've got you covered before

2:19:58

your favorite team goes on the clock.

2:20:00

We'll break it all down once all

2:20:02

257 picks have been made. Listen to

2:20:04

the 40s and free agents podcast on

2:20:06

the I heart radio app apple podcast

2:20:08

or wherever you get your podcasts. I'd

2:20:12

like to dive back into a valley. Here's

2:20:16

why here's why. What I appreciate so

2:20:18

much about this conversation is you're such an

2:20:20

accomplished athlete. Like it doesn't matter if

2:20:22

you're a Heisman, a second overall pick, like

2:20:25

you've had an 11 year career, like

2:20:27

you have an incredible life that I know

2:20:29

you're grateful for. And getting like having

2:20:31

these conversations, like a lot of stuff that

2:20:33

you consume is about everybody's highlights. And

2:20:35

I'm appreciative that you're so transparent in these

2:20:37

low moments because I feel like everybody

2:20:40

watching, like it goes through stuff like when

2:20:42

you're talking about getting banished or this

2:20:44

happening, like in my brain, there's like something

2:20:46

you're speaking to that I'm relating to

2:20:48

in my journey. And I feel like everybody

2:20:50

does it and it doesn't matter how

2:20:52

high you are, it's like everybody goes through

2:20:54

this human factor of bringing it back

2:20:57

to internal, talking with a psychologist,

2:20:59

like getting over whatever those mental blocks are

2:21:01

to allow your body to do what it's

2:21:03

capable of doing. So that's why

2:21:05

I love like talking about the valleys and

2:21:07

going to the time we were talking about

2:21:09

in Philly, was there a moment where you're

2:21:11

talking to your wife and talking about like

2:21:13

retiring and not wanting to do it anymore? And

2:21:16

that was the place you were thinking about, hey, once

2:21:18

this training camp's over, maybe they to

2:21:20

you or not, but I think I'm gonna hang it up.

2:21:22

Yeah, I mean, I was feeling that after Atlanta. Just

2:21:26

kind of how everything transpired there and

2:21:28

the negative kind of, you know, you try

2:21:30

to say like, oh, nothing gets to

2:21:32

you, right? Like, I mean, I don't even

2:21:34

have social media, but like that stuff

2:21:36

was getting to me about like, oh, he's

2:21:38

a quitter. this and that

2:21:40

like he and I was like I've

2:21:42

never been that's never been who I am

2:21:45

never been labeled as that and it's

2:21:47

like it felt like it was attacking my

2:21:49

character and my integrity and so I

2:21:51

was like man I was like after this

2:21:53

I don't I don't need this like

2:21:55

why would I why would I just set

2:21:57

myself up for that and like after

2:21:59

Atlanta I had met with the sports scholars

2:22:01

who I'm currently working with and you

2:22:04

know we felt like we're kind of overcoming

2:22:06

some of these hurdles but it's really

2:22:08

not until you go through it again

2:22:10

or like you go and you're actually out there

2:22:12

on the field, you realize like, wait, I'm not,

2:22:14

I'm not okay. You know, like

2:22:16

my anxiety, like these things are still bothering

2:22:18

me. And so really like,

2:22:20

I mean, I was like, we

2:22:22

had this open, we had this

2:22:24

open stadium practice when I was

2:22:26

in Philly. And which is wild,

2:22:28

by the way, they sell those out. So

2:22:31

there's The practices at Philly? How many

2:22:33

people? Whatever the stadium holds I think it

2:22:35

was like 70 some thousand people the

2:22:37

whole stadium for the it was like an

2:22:40

open scrimmage and Really like you know

2:22:42

you had open practices or whatever, but like

2:22:44

that was the first time I had

2:22:46

been in a stadium full of people like

2:22:48

that since the whole thing in Atlanta

2:22:50

and Bro, I could not I mean I

2:22:52

could not throw ball could not throw

2:22:55

ball. I was like My my fear my

2:22:57

anxiety like everything was just like through

2:22:59

the roof and so I ended up just

2:23:01

running around Like I was like they

2:23:03

were calling plays and I was just scrambling

2:23:05

just trying to like move the ball

2:23:07

and I remember coming out of that game

2:23:09

or the scrimmage And I was like

2:23:12

dude. I'm this is not it. I don't

2:23:14

care. I remember looking at my wife

2:23:16

like I'm good on this like I don't

2:23:18

I don't need it and It just

2:23:20

kind of it compiled like I went into

2:23:22

the next preseason game against Baltimore did

2:23:24

okay Cleveland I was like a mess and

2:23:26

I was like after the Cleveland I

2:23:29

really thought he'd cut I

2:23:31

was playing so bad. And I was

2:23:33

just like almost, I mean, my mind, I was like hoping

2:23:35

like, I was like, I hope they just cut me and

2:23:37

I just like walk off with it and move on. And

2:23:40

that's when Howie kind of sat me down

2:23:42

after the Cleveland game was like, Hey, I'm going

2:23:44

to try to kind of help you out

2:23:46

here. And through that

2:23:48

process, through that year, working with

2:23:50

G my sports psychologist, like I

2:23:52

really kind of just started to

2:23:55

Separate myself from what that anxiety and

2:23:57

that fear is and a lot

2:23:59

of it is is external A lot

2:24:01

of it is like you're so

2:24:03

worried about what maybe other people are

2:24:05

thinking about you that you don't

2:24:07

really realize that that's affecting who you

2:24:09

are and what you're about and

2:24:11

My nature as a people pleaser. I

2:24:13

think kind of really sets that

2:24:15

off like I naturally want to be

2:24:17

liked I want people to appreciate

2:24:19

me as a person so when Something

2:24:21

that I identify with specifically football

2:24:23

isn't allowing me to do that and

2:24:25

people like man you suck like

2:24:27

you're not worth this You know you're

2:24:29

not worth a shit like then

2:24:31

I'm like well if I'm not able

2:24:33

to be liked because of the

2:24:35

one thing that I feel I'm good

2:24:37

at then I'm kind of like

2:24:39

lost and being able to really kind

2:24:41

of realize that and take a

2:24:43

step away from it and be

2:24:46

around really Alex Taney was with me and

2:24:48

like help me through that. Brian Johnson, who's on

2:24:50

staff with the commanders, like they all kind

2:24:52

of helped me through that avenue. So

2:24:54

where like I played in the last game against

2:24:56

the Giants, Jay had gotten hurt before the playoff

2:24:58

game. And then I played

2:25:00

okay. But like I was like the first

2:25:02

time I can remember like telling Kiyomi,

2:25:04

like it was the first time I played

2:25:06

like somewhat free since really college. And

2:25:09

I think a lot of that was because

2:25:11

there was a lot of expectations He came to

2:25:13

Tennessee when I got to the radio is

2:25:15

like I was playing in my hometown like there's

2:25:17

expectations there then you when you go to

2:25:19

Atlanta, it's like You know, you're you're asked to

2:25:21

be the guy there and it just kind

2:25:23

of re Kind of does that whole thing again.

2:25:25

Yeah, so yeah, I mean at the end

2:25:27

of the day like I had to really come

2:25:29

to terms with The

2:25:32

fear and the anxiety that I was dealing

2:25:34

with and that I needed to be able

2:25:36

to communicate those things Because it did affect

2:25:38

me and it affected how I was playing

2:25:41

Take a moment to shout out your wife, because

2:25:43

you're somebody who is probably when you're in

2:25:45

front of everybody else or in the locker room,

2:25:48

you can't really see what the emotion is

2:25:50

or what's going on with Marcus. You're a quiet

2:25:52

guy, but I'm sure you're having these conversations

2:25:54

with your wife through the ups and downs and

2:25:56

how pivotal was she through all this as

2:25:58

an athlete too here. You're gonna make me cry

2:26:00

on this podcast and I want to do

2:26:02

that. Yeah, she's...

2:26:04

I think the ball cried, right? Yeah,

2:26:06

we'll cry with you, I

2:26:08

promise. She's

2:26:10

yeah, I mean everything that I

2:26:13

could ever ask for She was

2:26:15

an athlete herself which I think

2:26:17

for us has been great because

2:26:19

she understands the valleys and understands

2:26:21

the peaks and Very very fortunate.

2:26:23

She's an unbelievable mother Which I

2:26:26

think has made me realize how

2:26:28

much I even love her more

2:26:30

because I don't think you really

2:26:32

realize until your Significant other has

2:26:34

maybe a child or that you

2:26:36

really realize like how much You

2:26:38

really do care about them. So,

2:26:43

yeah, we've been through a lot. She

2:26:46

is kind of the yin to the

2:26:48

yang. I always joke that she's

2:26:50

the social one and I'm not. She's the one that

2:26:52

everyone likes and I'm not. But

2:26:54

very, very fortunate and yeah, blessed

2:26:57

to have her in my life.

2:26:59

I love that. That is beautiful.

2:27:02

Just wait for the tell -off. She seems like

2:27:04

you better get her on. She's a firecracker.

2:27:08

I said a couple times we started the spark, I was

2:27:10

like, you can come sit down. She's like, nah, I'm good.

2:27:12

Yeah, we'll give you a mic. No doubt. Because I'm fascinated.

2:27:14

Jimmy, is there anything you do want to say? Oh, there's

2:27:16

a lot of things. Yeah? Don't

2:27:20

let her get going. Dude, congrats

2:27:22

on two kids, man. Thank you. How

2:27:25

did that throw a wrinkle in

2:27:27

everything while you're going through all these

2:27:29

ebbs and flows? No doubt. Trying

2:27:31

to be present at home while also

2:27:33

trying to pour into your craft

2:27:35

and get back, you know, out of

2:27:37

the funk that you were in.

2:27:40

For sure. I think what really kind

2:27:42

of set me off maybe a

2:27:44

little bit was after having Makaya in

2:27:46

Atlanta and had everything that had

2:27:48

happened, I can just remember sitting

2:27:50

there holding her and thinking about, man, I

2:27:52

should have done this on this play.

2:27:54

or I shouldn't have thrown this or I

2:27:56

wish I would have checked to this. And

2:27:59

then I'm sitting there like five minutes

2:28:01

and they're like, dude, there's something wrong with

2:28:03

this. You know what I mean? Like

2:28:05

I'm sitting there holding my child who's maybe

2:28:08

a week old and I'm thinking about

2:28:10

decisions and plays that I did wrong. And

2:28:12

that's when I was like really

2:28:14

searching. That's when I ended up getting

2:28:16

a sports psychologist because I was

2:28:18

like, there's nothing in this world that

2:28:21

should take me away from her. And

2:28:23

it was. and I was like

2:28:25

it's not for me wasn't worth it.

2:28:30

So they've been a great perspective for

2:28:32

me and I think it's really

2:28:34

helped me kind of iron out a

2:28:36

lot of that fear and a

2:28:38

lot of that anxiety because I don't

2:28:40

want my kids to be afraid

2:28:42

to talk about it if they do

2:28:44

have it, right? Like I want

2:28:46

my kids to be able to be

2:28:48

vulnerable and be open to having

2:28:50

conversations, whether it's with us or with

2:28:53

other people, because I think that's how

2:28:55

we all internally grow. So

2:28:57

I think for me, it's been the

2:28:59

biggest blessing because it's helped me kind of

2:29:01

overcome a lot of these things that

2:29:03

I've been doing. Yeah,

2:29:06

I love that. You're having kids,

2:29:08

it changes everything. Yeah. And I

2:29:10

get what you're saying too, but like, I

2:29:12

remember having a win, and she

2:29:14

was born on July 5th, and then a couple weeks later

2:29:16

I'm in camp, but I would get done with camp, and

2:29:19

I'd be thinking about tomorrow's practice

2:29:21

or the film, I messed up

2:29:23

this play. And

2:29:25

yeah, it's so

2:29:27

consuming. When football becomes that consuming, it takes

2:29:29

away from the fun. It takes away from the reason why you

2:29:31

started playing the game in the first place. And

2:29:33

it's so hard to get out of

2:29:35

that mental gymnastic of how tough the

2:29:37

smallest things can set you off when

2:29:39

they used to not at all. Right. Yeah,

2:29:42

man. Yeah. Because there's parts of

2:29:44

me that feels like I got lucky having

2:29:46

Rue because we had our first around the

2:29:48

same time. as I was actually about to

2:29:50

go out to Atlanta. But

2:29:53

even leaving however old Ru was

2:29:55

at that time and feeling like, man,

2:29:58

it kind of sucks. Like, hey, shout

2:30:00

out NFL moms and wives that are

2:30:02

out there. Because just knowing that

2:30:04

what we pour, like talking for myself and

2:30:06

then you probably now being out of the

2:30:08

league, like what you have to pour into

2:30:10

a profession like this at a level that

2:30:13

you've obsessed about for your entire life. And

2:30:15

knowing how that can like, you know, Again,

2:30:17

I feel like I'm like thankful that I

2:30:19

had Rue kind of after the fact because

2:30:21

of how much you have to pour into

2:30:23

everything at home and knowing that, you know,

2:30:25

your unbelievable wife has to sacrifice a lot

2:30:27

of stuff for us to chase our dream.

2:30:29

And it's when I was thinking about going

2:30:31

out to Atlanta or playing, it's like, damn,

2:30:33

she's going to have to do all this

2:30:36

stuff that you know, in the off season,

2:30:38

you have to help out on. You're there.

2:30:40

You're intentional. You're all of it. Absolutely.

2:30:42

Well, like, I don't mean to cut

2:30:44

you off, but like that's like right now,

2:30:46

right? Like we start April 22nd and. I'm

2:30:49

not gonna move my entire family out

2:30:51

there for seven weeks or eight weeks with

2:30:53

the OTA period. So like she's gonna

2:30:55

be here in Oregon for Monday through Thursdays

2:30:57

by herself and it's basically she becomes like

2:30:59

a single mother, right? And then I come

2:31:01

pop in on Friday for the weekends

2:31:03

and you know, it's just I don't think

2:31:05

a lot of people understand like what that

2:31:07

is and how that Operates really on a

2:31:10

day -to -day basis for a lot of these

2:31:12

families because that's not it's not just

2:31:14

me You know, I mean guys like Zach

2:31:16

Erz and Bobby Wagner like they have kids

2:31:18

you know, that are on the West Coast

2:31:20

that they're going to be traveling back

2:31:22

and forth to. Yeah. Um, and

2:31:24

it's just everyone kind of sees the end product

2:31:26

on Sundays, but like it is, it's, it

2:31:28

is strenuous on the families and to have someone

2:31:30

solid at home to be able to take

2:31:32

care of those things is really important. It's such

2:31:34

a unique balance of like having gratitude for

2:31:36

being able to do something that 1 % of

2:31:38

1 % get to do. Right. And also being

2:31:41

as present as you possibly can when you do

2:31:43

get home. Cause it's just like, you gotta

2:31:45

turn, like, switch, turn that switch on. And coming

2:31:47

home and probably want to kind of talk

2:31:49

about your day or a practice and you're, then

2:31:51

you kind of like check yourself. Right. On

2:31:53

the flip side too, like, I mean, Taylor had

2:31:55

to deal with that, you know, especially when

2:31:57

I had win. Shortly

2:31:59

after that was like the ACL, the bad

2:32:01

season. So there was like so much turmoil

2:32:03

and I was a shell of myself. And

2:32:06

I would remember going like my knee would be hurting,

2:32:08

I have a bad game or something like that. And then

2:32:10

I'd go into the next weekend I practice on a

2:32:12

Wednesday and come home and she's like, oh, today was tough.

2:32:15

Selfishly, I'm thinking of myself like, bro, you don't know.

2:32:17

How tough this is, you know what I'm saying? Like

2:32:20

obviously what they're doing is, I'm like truly

2:32:22

trying to be as honest as possible where

2:32:24

I was mentally sure. Cause I would sit

2:32:26

there and be like, bro, this shit doesn't

2:32:28

work. And I have to go do things

2:32:30

that this needs to work for. And it's

2:32:32

just like, it's crazy how selfish you can

2:32:34

get if you allow yourself to. And definitely

2:32:36

towards the end of my career, I was

2:32:38

like, I could look back at that and

2:32:40

be like, wow. very

2:32:43

selfish about me. And everything that

2:32:45

was on me as opposed to like seeing what she was having

2:32:47

to go through. So it's yeah,

2:32:49

having kids is definitely. It's

2:32:51

a good perspective. Yeah. It definitely equalizes

2:32:53

a lot of things. Should we hit them with

2:32:55

the Bud Light question? We should.

2:32:57

I want to see if Jack has

2:32:59

questions. We'll give Jack a moment.

2:33:01

Yeah. So you know,

2:33:03

people do anything for an ice cold Bud

2:33:05

Light. Anything. What is

2:33:07

something that you would do anything for

2:33:09

families off the table? If we've learned

2:33:11

anything about this podcast, we have to

2:33:13

take family off the table because that's

2:33:16

where you'll go. So you

2:33:18

gotta take family off the table.

2:33:20

What is something that you would do

2:33:22

anything for? Give

2:33:25

me an example. It's a

2:33:27

great question. Who had a good one? It wasn't Dale.

2:33:30

Yeah, Steve Rinalo says, uh,

2:33:32

who does meat eater was like, I want

2:33:34

to do a documentary that I don't think anybody

2:33:36

will ever care about, but I need to

2:33:39

do the documentary. He wouldn't tell us

2:33:41

on camera. He told us off camera, but he's like,

2:33:43

that's what I would do anything for. Oh,

2:33:47

wow. I think

2:33:49

mine's actually, um, it's

2:33:51

to be a little bit interesting.

2:33:53

I guess maybe for me, but I

2:33:55

would do anything to go. It's

2:33:58

called the Nepali Coast on Kauai.

2:34:00

And they have these secluded beaches

2:34:02

that you only get to by

2:34:05

boat. And I would do

2:34:07

anything to get there and have

2:34:09

an empty lineup and my boogie board

2:34:11

and fins and just be there

2:34:13

all day and catch barrels and get

2:34:15

shacked and not a worry in

2:34:17

the world. That

2:34:20

seems like a vibe, dude. The

2:34:22

boogie board. That's a good one, man. That

2:34:24

is solid. Yeah, it's hard to

2:34:26

think outside of the obviously it's

2:34:28

like especially with kids and everything

2:34:30

else family for sure Oh, see

2:34:32

this is the most nervous I've

2:34:35

been all day I love that

2:34:37

I Have a two -part question football

2:34:39

related in the non -football one

2:34:41

it could be from high school

2:34:43

college or pros Who is your favorite

2:34:45

teammate you ever had and favorite

2:34:47

coach? Can I say these guys

2:34:49

are no you can I say

2:34:51

them? It's a cop out. But

2:34:53

if you were gonna say, that's

2:34:55

an option for a pilot. Well,

2:34:57

first of all, I mean, he

2:34:59

probably has $100 ,000 in fines for

2:35:01

me, so I really enjoyed my

2:35:03

time with him. Gosh.

2:35:07

You know, put me on the spot, because I've played with

2:35:09

so many great guys. Yeah,

2:35:16

it's probably my dog. Actually, he

2:35:18

just retired officially, had his retirement

2:35:20

party on Sunday. Who's this? Ronas

2:35:22

Grosu. He was my center here.

2:35:26

Congratulations to him, by the way. Got

2:35:29

inducted into the Oregon Hall of Fame,

2:35:31

University of Oregon Hall of Fame. One,

2:35:35

I don't know how many offensive linemen are in

2:35:38

it, but yeah, so he's probably one of very

2:35:40

few. So we're pretty cool. But that's my guy.

2:35:42

And I've been through a lot of things up

2:35:44

and downs. Had a great time in Oregon, but

2:35:46

he was there with me in Tennessee. I

2:35:48

was also there with me and

2:35:50

with the Raiders. And yeah, just

2:35:52

my guy. like special dude, special

2:35:54

family. And now

2:35:56

he gets to be a trophy husband. So

2:35:59

congratulations, my guy.

2:36:02

Favorite coach. Yes, favorite coach. Oh,

2:36:05

man. I

2:36:10

would say Mark Helferich. He

2:36:13

was my head coach here. He was also

2:36:15

the offensive coordinator when I got here. He

2:36:18

taught me so much more than just

2:36:20

football. And I think to

2:36:22

this day, that's why we're so

2:36:24

close. He lives

2:36:26

here in Eugene. We play golf. He's

2:36:30

had our families over. He's just

2:36:32

an unbelievable person who's been through a

2:36:35

lot. And I think being able

2:36:37

just to have someone in your corner

2:36:39

like that, that you can always

2:36:41

rely on, is special.

2:36:43

And he probably had the,

2:36:45

honestly, I could go on record

2:36:48

and say this, but he

2:36:50

probably had the worst team meetings.

2:36:52

He was he's very smart

2:36:54

guy and he would lose probably

2:36:56

half the room when he

2:36:58

would go through some of his

2:37:01

pregame speeches, but For me

2:37:03

he was just unbelievable and I

2:37:05

love him to death and

2:37:07

yeah, he's just one of a

2:37:09

kind Amazing. All right last

2:37:11

question non football related your back

2:37:13

home you go to the

2:37:16

gas station build out your perfect

2:37:18

hot plate Well, I wouldn't

2:37:20

go to a gas station because

2:37:22

I'm an EV guy But

2:37:24

I would say if I had,

2:37:26

so back home in Hawaii, and

2:37:29

they do Spam with Subbies. So

2:37:31

it's like, it's Spam on top

2:37:34

of rice that's wrapped with nutty

2:37:36

or seaweed. So

2:37:38

I'd have one of those. That sounds brutal,

2:37:40

honestly. Sometimes,

2:37:43

if you get lucky, you

2:37:45

can get a little egg or, you know,

2:37:47

something else on there. It's

2:37:50

unbelievable. No matter what you

2:37:52

think, but it's great. And

2:37:55

then I would probably get

2:37:57

along lines of like, we call

2:37:59

it Korean chicken. So

2:38:02

they do like, it's

2:38:04

like a sesame type of

2:38:06

teriyaki sauce. And

2:38:08

they put some chili flakes in there. So I

2:38:10

would have that and a Spam looks to

2:38:12

be. Beautiful. Thank you

2:38:14

for your time. Hold on,

2:38:16

wait, what would your hot plate be? I've

2:38:19

only had the experience of it once. My

2:38:21

brother lives in Maui and has for 10 years.

2:38:23

And I want to say it was some

2:38:25

local, just some kind of pork. It was part

2:38:27

of some whole pork. Some

2:38:30

macaroni salad. Cold, obviously. And...

2:38:33

Probably lots of rice. Yeah, I think it was just

2:38:35

another side of rice. And hopefully they just got some

2:38:37

nice house sauce in there. You can just drizzle it

2:38:39

all over. So I think that's probably a good Howley

2:38:41

plate for me. It's safe. It's

2:38:43

safe. So let's give it a go. Appreciate

2:38:45

it. You don't have anything else, Jack? I've

2:38:47

got my trivia after this.

2:38:50

Okay. Oh trivia. Quick

2:38:52

trivia. Um, Jack brought

2:38:54

up Halley's. Is there really a beat up

2:38:56

Halley day? My mom grew up on Kauai here.

2:38:58

They have beat up Halley days. They don't

2:39:00

have it anymore though. What is that? What is

2:39:02

the Halley's like white? It'd

2:39:05

be a foreigner. No,

2:39:07

it's white. It's for the white kids. They

2:39:12

go to a day and get beat up. Yeah, like

2:39:15

you go to school and it's like a beat -up

2:39:17

Halliday, which by the way, no shit Not even a

2:39:19

fun name to go with it. They should have like

2:39:21

another cool meet up Halliday. Yeah,

2:39:23

we

2:39:25

got initiative

2:39:27

Yeah They

2:39:30

roll the dice. This is real. Yeah, they roll the dice.

2:39:32

The first dice is how many minutes, the second dice how

2:39:34

many people. Is

2:39:36

that, is that true to that? No, no, no. That's

2:39:38

like a gang thing. Miles

2:39:41

again, was like, damn, is this for real?

2:39:43

Yeah. So your mom took part

2:39:45

in that, didn't she? She wouldn't go to

2:39:47

school. That's sweet.

2:39:49

Yeah. When it was beat up Hallie Day,

2:39:51

she just would skip out on school. Yeah. That

2:39:54

seems right. Marcus coming from that.

2:39:56

Yeah, he's got a good family. no part of

2:39:58

that. No doubt. When it's all said and

2:40:00

done, are you going to live in Hawaii? Yeah,

2:40:03

I'll be 300 pounds on a boogie board somewhere.

2:40:05

Come find me. I love it,

2:40:07

dude. Man, this has been... an

2:40:09

incredible conversation. I legitimately

2:40:11

appreciate it, man. Talking through the peaks

2:40:13

and especially the valleys. You love

2:40:15

the valleys. I do. It's

2:40:18

like, you know, it shows you who you are. Yeah.

2:40:20

And it's rare you get guys that, you

2:40:22

know, that want to sit in some of

2:40:24

those uncomfortable spaces and talk about it, you

2:40:26

know, knowing it's going to get viewed. And

2:40:28

that's hard for a lot of people. And

2:40:30

I do. I genuinely appreciate it. No, thank

2:40:32

you guys. We to do it on the

2:40:35

bus though. Yeah, you know, but

2:40:37

hey, you've been we've been wanting to get

2:40:39

you locked in. It's for sure. It's been

2:40:41

first since the beginning. So it's like, hey,

2:40:43

we're going to be out in Eugene. I

2:40:45

just I just I was driving home and

2:40:47

I was just taught to myself. I wonder

2:40:49

if for whatever reason, Marcos would be out

2:40:51

in in Oregon because you mentioned your boy

2:40:53

who's Ryan Flaherty. Flaherty. I remember listening to

2:40:55

him on a podcast. He used to do

2:40:57

all the Nike podcast. Yeah. Love his stuff.

2:40:59

Shout out, Ryan. But I just remember

2:41:02

thinking like, I wonder if he'll be out there. You're like,

2:41:04

yep, until the 22nd. I'm like, buddy,

2:41:07

it's time. time. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because we talk

2:41:09

about it every year. Every year. We got to

2:41:11

get Marcus off. Because we were with him out

2:41:13

in, what was it, Vegas last year? Yep. When

2:41:15

that little moment went down in the hotel, and

2:41:17

I kind of had to. Oh my god, yeah,

2:41:19

the AC DC. I kind of had to shut

2:41:21

it down. That was terrifying. That was two years

2:41:23

ago. Crazy. Marcus

2:41:26

loved that he's like, hey, I got this game. What's

2:41:28

the game called? It's called AC Ducey, right? AC

2:41:31

Ducey. Hot. Hot. Did you tell your wife about

2:41:33

this? No, now you're going to get me

2:41:35

in trouble. I

2:41:37

lost money that day. I think

2:41:39

we all could have lost a lot of

2:41:41

money if you were like, hey, we can't do

2:41:43

this. Everyone's like, yay, let's not do this.

2:41:45

Because it got to a point that either ban

2:41:47

or somebody put their car in the middle

2:41:49

because there was so much money on the table.

2:41:51

I forget the rules of AC Ducey. hard

2:41:53

part of AC Ducey is like, it's not even

2:41:55

really skill. It's just like what the cards

2:41:57

come out. Yeah. But this round it was going

2:41:59

so long. Well, we kept hitting post. So

2:42:01

like basically AC Ducey works is you have to

2:42:03

get in between the numbers. So like if

2:42:05

you get like a jack and a two, like

2:42:07

you want a number in between. If

2:42:10

you go outside of that, you have to

2:42:12

pay whatever you bet. If you

2:42:14

hit a post, you have to double whatever

2:42:16

you bet. So people will say like pot.

2:42:18

and they'll hit a post, so they'll hit

2:42:20

Jack or whatever the other number was, and

2:42:22

then they have to match the pot and

2:42:24

double it. Match the

2:42:26

pot and double it. And you're so

2:42:28

much money. He got a little excessive. Because

2:42:30

way he explained it, it's like, you

2:42:32

know, it probably wouldn't go over a couple

2:42:34

thousand. Yeah.

2:42:40

We had to split it up. We had to like, hey,

2:42:42

let's just get back to zero here. years ago? Yeah. was

2:42:44

two years ago. That was when Arya, you,

2:42:46

yeah. Somebody put a car. You'd love

2:42:48

the tables. I do. I would say if

2:42:50

there's a vice in my life, it's

2:42:52

gambling. Yeah, but you do it so

2:42:54

responsibly. I try to, yeah. But I remember

2:42:56

we would do O -line trips and you would

2:42:58

come out and some of the boys would go

2:43:00

out and they'd be like, yeah, I saw

2:43:02

Marcus at 7 a .m. when I got back

2:43:04

just on the craps table with like a hundred

2:43:06

bucks. Just

2:43:08

love playing. Well,

2:43:10

have you heard about our boy? You

2:43:13

would love this. He's

2:43:15

heavy on the gambling now. Big. Really?

2:43:17

Yeah, I got caught up with Dana. Like

2:43:20

Blackjack? Yeah, well, it was

2:43:22

Blackjack, now it's Baccarat. Ooh. And

2:43:24

dude. Banker? Banker, depends what

2:43:26

the screen says. And we're talking, how

2:43:28

hard the hand's the limit you go?

2:43:31

The max. Yeah. So like, one hand. That's

2:43:33

what people, yeah. In the high roller group, bro. One hand's

2:43:35

30. Yeah, I'm good on that. Catch me

2:43:37

on the craps table to the craps table.

2:43:39

It's fun. I think it's more social That

2:43:41

was back when we were just we get

2:43:43

some drinks. We're running the football. We're having

2:43:46

a hundred dollars That was so much fun.

2:43:48

We were like there's like five or six

2:43:50

of us just sitting there a few hundred

2:43:52

dollar hands Then we're up in the room

2:43:54

and all that I don't know how much

2:43:56

cash we had but it felt like it

2:43:58

was like 30 or $40 ,000 in the middle

2:44:00

and then somebody wanted to put a car

2:44:02

in and nobody was hitting whatever the term

2:44:04

was the post or the pot or Somebody

2:44:06

hit the pot, I have to double it,

2:44:08

and it was like, hey, fellas, let's, yeah,

2:44:11

let's just separate all this. Everybody get money.

2:44:13

Yeah, that was a terrifying. That's right.

2:44:16

That's right. Then he lost it that night

2:44:18

playing Blackjack. Yeah. Who's that, Corey? Yeah.

2:44:20

Yeah, Corey. Corey, the

2:44:22

next morning, we shared a

2:44:24

room, and I come out

2:44:27

of my room, and he's just standing. We're

2:44:29

up there in the hotel, and

2:44:31

he's just standing, looking out the

2:44:33

blinds. And all I say is,

2:44:35

Corey? And he just goes, he's standing right

2:44:37

there in his briefs, and he just goes, man,

2:44:39

what are we chasing out of here? Well,

2:44:44

he won. I mean, he won a good amount

2:44:46

of money that day. And then I remember sitting

2:44:48

at the blackjack table like, that's all gone. Yeah.

2:44:51

Yeah. Was that the same? Did we go

2:44:53

to Mr. Chow's that night? was that

2:44:55

that same night yeah we got oh either

2:44:58

chow's or pizza yeah we went to

2:45:00

chow's and i think mitch was like didn't

2:45:02

kory win 10 000 and kory's like

2:45:04

slumped in the chair so sad and someone's

2:45:06

like does that look like a guy

2:45:08

that's won ten thousand dollars he's so sad

2:45:10

we shouldn't laugh about that no he's

2:45:12

all right kory's doing great man yeah i

2:45:14

think he's back with the titans yeah

2:45:16

i think is he back i think so

2:45:19

Can't kill him. him.

2:45:24

him. kill him. him. Can't

2:45:26

kill him. Can't Can't him. him. kill

2:45:29

him. Can't kill him. Can't

2:45:32

kill him. Can't

2:45:34

kill

2:45:36

him.

2:45:39

Can't kill him. I

2:45:42

was like one the morning where I was at, so

2:45:44

I had to be at three where you guys were

2:45:46

at. And we played three games of risk in a

2:45:48

row. And Corey was talking one day, oh, Corey, you're

2:45:50

built like a muffin, just like going at it. And

2:45:52

it got quiet. Like, it was kind of awkward. Like,

2:45:54

Dan, Taylor's being kind of mean to you. Because I

2:45:56

think Corey said something like a pencil and he took

2:45:58

a photo. And like, you know, you're built a pencil,

2:46:00

Taylor. And then Taylor, that night on the mic was

2:46:03

just ripping into him. Everybody's just kind of quiet like,

2:46:05

oh my god. The next day, like 8 AM, sends

2:46:07

us a photo of him at the field, grinding. Now

2:46:11

he looks incredible. Now

2:46:14

it's like, hey Corey, like you're welcome.

2:46:17

Sometimes you got a bully kid to put

2:46:19

him in where he needs to go. Shout

2:46:22

out Corey 11. All right, let's

2:46:24

lock it up. Yeah, I

2:46:26

feel amazing. This is awesome. Listen
