Boston. According to

0:05

the Chinese calendar,

0:07

this week marks the

0:09

start of a new year,

0:12

the year of the

0:14

snake. The Chinese calendar

0:16

works in a repeating cycle of

0:19

12 years, known as the

0:21

Zodiac. Each year is represented

0:23

by a different animal. And

0:25

it's believed that if you're

0:28

born in a given year,

0:30

you'll have the personality traits

0:32

of that year's animal. So

0:34

if you're born in the

0:36

year of the snake, for

0:39

instance, you're said to be especially

0:41

intelligent and mysterious. But how

0:43

did the Chinese Zodiac come

0:46

about? And how did its

0:48

12 animals get selected? In

0:50

today's story, we'll find out. I'm

0:57

Rebecca Shear and welcome to

0:59

Circle Round, where story time

1:01

happens all the time. Today

1:03

our story is called The

1:05

Zodiac Twelve. Versions of this

1:07

tale come from the East

1:09

Asian country of China. Some

1:11

really great people came together

1:13

to bring you our version of

1:16

this folk tale, including Tai Ma

1:18

and Jimmy Wang. Better and actor

1:20

Thai Ma has appeared in numerous

1:23

films including The Farewell, Tiger Tale,

1:25

and Five Blind Dates. Grown Ups,

1:27

you can also see Thai in

1:30

the Hulu series Interior Chinatown. Actor,

1:32

musician, and singer Jimmy Wong stars

1:34

in the animated feature Wish Dragon.

1:37

And fun fact, you can see

1:39

both Thai and Jimmy and

1:41

Disney's live-action film, Mulan. So,

1:43

circle around everyone. For the

1:45

Zodiac, 12. Once

1:58

upon a time there

2:00

There's no official way

2:02

to keep track of

2:04

time. Sure, you could

2:06

notice when the sun

2:08

was rising and setting.

2:10

You could observe when

2:12

the seasons shifted from

2:15

one to the next,

2:17

but there was no

2:19

way to count the

2:21

years, which made it

2:23

tough to remember when

2:25

big important events happened,

2:27

including your own birthday.

2:29

So, once upon a

2:31

time, the Jade Emperor,

2:33

the powerful ruler of

2:36

heaven and Earth, came

2:38

up. With an idea,

2:40

he called it the

2:42

Zodiac. I shall create

2:44

the Zodiac. An ever

2:46

repeating cycle of 12

2:48

years. To make it

2:50

easy for everyone to

2:52

remember those 12 years,

2:54

I shall name each

2:57

year after a different

2:59

animal. Not a bad

3:01

idea, right? There was

3:03

just one problem. Two

3:05

actually, first... How shall

3:07

I decide? Which animals

3:09

will have years named

3:11

after them? And second?

3:13

How shall I decide

3:15

the animals' order? The

3:18

Jade Emperor thought and

3:20

thought, until he came

3:22

up with another idea.

3:24

I shall hold a

3:26

race. I shall invite

3:28

all of the animals

3:30

to compete. The first

3:32

12 to reach the

3:34

finish line will earn

3:36

their own place in

3:39

the Zodiac. The morning

3:41

of the race, the

3:43

Jade Emperor was pleased

3:45

to see how many

3:47

critters had crawled, slithered,

3:49

hopped and winged their

3:51

way to the starting

3:53

line outside his palace.

3:55

Welcome my friends to

3:57

the Great Zodiac Race!

4:03

Today's race will

4:05

take you through

4:07

a deep rolling

4:10

valley, up and

4:12

down a series of

4:14

green grassy hills. You

4:16

will know you've reached

4:18

the home stretch when

4:21

you come to

4:23

the banks of a

4:25

wide fast flowing river.

4:27

The first 12 of

4:30

you to cross that

4:32

river will earn a

4:34

place on the Zodiac.

4:36

The first to arrive

4:38

will get the first

4:40

year and the second to

4:43

arrive will get the second year

4:45

all the way

4:47

down to the

4:49

12th. So my friends,

4:52

what do you say? Are

4:54

you ready to race? I

4:59

said, are you

5:01

ready to race? Alright

5:07

then, on your

5:10

mark, get set, go!

5:14

There was a boisterous blur

5:16

of feathers, fur and scales

5:18

as the animals made a

5:20

beeline for the deep rolling

5:22

valley. But somewhere around the

5:24

fourth or fifth green grassy

5:26

hill, a trio of animals

5:28

managed to pull ahead. And

5:30

the first three racers to

5:32

reach the wide fast flowing

5:34

river were rat,

5:37

cat,

5:39

and ox. Yeah

5:44

In modern times, rat

5:46

and cat are sworn enemies,

5:48

right? They simply do not

5:50

get along. Well, back when

5:52

our story takes place, rat

5:54

and cat were close friends.

5:56

And they knew full well

5:59

that they couldn't swim. anywhere near

6:01

as fast as Burley-Brawny Ox

6:03

could. So they asked him

6:05

for a lift. Here's what

6:07

Cat and I are thinking,

6:10

Ox. We'll ride on your

6:12

back as you swim across

6:14

the river and we'll face

6:17

the opposite direction so we

6:19

can act as lookouts. That's

6:21

right. And the moment Rat

6:23

and I see another racer

6:26

catching up, we'll let you

6:28

know to put on some

6:30

speed. Ox had always been

6:33

agreeable and good-natured. So he

6:35

accepted Rat and Cat's offer.

6:37

And as he swam... How's

6:39

it looking up there, you

6:42

do? Anyone on my tail?

6:44

Not yet. And swam? How

6:46

about now? Nope. No one.

6:48

His passengers exchanged a self-satisfied

6:51

smirk. Isn't this great cat?

6:53

It sure is. We're practically

6:55

flying across the river. We

6:58

sure are. At this rate,

7:00

I'm totally going to be

7:02

the first animal in the

7:04

zodiac. You sure are? Wait,

7:07

what? Why should you be

7:09

the first animal in the

7:11

zodiac? Because I'm crafty and

7:14

clever. It was my idea

7:16

to hit your ride with

7:18

ox, you know. It was

7:20

not. It was my idea.

7:23

No, it was... With

7:29

those powerful claws of yours,

7:31

you could grab that sucker

7:33

and have a real feast!

7:35

The truth is, there was

7:37

no big fish jumping out

7:39

of the water, but just

7:41

as Rat hoped, Cat's thoughts

7:43

instantly turned from competing to

7:45

eating. And the moment she

7:47

turned her head to find

7:49

the fish. Where is it?

7:51

I don't see it. Rat

7:53

pushed her off of ox's

7:55

back. And

7:58

she landed in the water.

8:00

splash. Ox was working so

8:02

hard, took no notice of

8:05

the commotion. How are we

8:07

doing, you too? We're almost

8:10

at the shore, but I'm

8:12

getting tired and slowing down.

8:14

You gotta let me know

8:16

if there's anyone behind me.

8:19

Oh, there isn't anyone

8:21

behind you, Ox. But guess

8:24

what? There is someone in

8:26

front of you! Next

8:29

thing Ox knew, Rat was

8:31

springing off his back and

8:33

into the river. The wily

8:35

and well-rested rodent had no

8:37

trouble paddling the rest of

8:39

the way to shore. Within

8:41

seconds, he was standing on

8:43

the riverbank, shaking himself off

8:45

and bowing before the Jade

8:48

Emperor, who was waiting with

8:50

one of his scribes. Congratulations,

8:52

Rat! You are the first

8:54

animal to reach the Finnish

8:56

line. Therefore! The first year

8:59

in the Zodiac will

9:01

be named after you.

9:03

Squibe? Can you note

9:05

that down, please? The

9:07

scribe recorded the first

9:09

place winner on a

9:11

parchment scroll. The Jade

9:13

Emperor gave Rat a smile.

9:16

You must be proud of

9:18

yourself, Rat? Tell me! How

9:20

does such a small

9:22

animal accomplish such a

9:25

big victory? With all due

9:27

respect, your majesty, I may be

9:29

small in size, but I'm big

9:32

in brains. I had the brilliant

9:34

idea of enlisting the help of

9:37

a gracious friend. And look! Here

9:39

he is now! Rat motioned toward

9:41

the water, and there was Ox.

9:44

His broad, chest having, his

9:46

wooly coat dripping, as he

9:48

trudged onto the bank. Well

9:50

done, Ox! You are the

9:52

second animal to finish the

9:54

race! So the second year

9:56

in the Zodiac will be

9:58

named after you OX

10:01

was annoyed by Rat's trick,

10:03

but he was too good

10:05

-natured to rat the rodent

10:07

out. And besides, second place

10:09

was nothing to sneeze at,

10:12

so he accepted his position

10:14

with dignity. But just

10:16

as the scribe was recording

10:18

OX's name, all

10:20

eyes shifted to the

10:22

river, and there was Tiger

10:25

dragging her striped, sinewy

10:27

body out of the water.

10:30

She stumbled to the jade

10:32

emperor, then collapsed at his

10:34

feet. Oh,

10:36

Tiger, what happened?

10:39

You look like you've been through

10:41

quite an ordeal. I

10:43

have, Your Majesty.

10:45

I was swimming

10:47

strongly and making

10:49

good headway. When

10:51

I got caught

10:53

in the current

10:55

and sucked into

10:57

a whirlpool, I

11:00

used every ounce of

11:02

strength I had to

11:04

break free from the

11:06

spinning water and make

11:09

it to safety. And

11:11

now, here I am. Well,

11:14

I am proud of

11:17

you, Tiger. Tiger, you

11:19

persevered and you didn't

11:21

give up. So as

11:23

the brave, courageous third

11:26

animal to finish the

11:28

race, you have earned

11:30

yourself the third position

11:32

in the Zodiac. I

11:35

wonder who will be next. The

11:38

Jade Emperor didn't have to

11:40

wonder long, because all at once

11:42

a big, sturdy log came

11:44

drifting to shore and perched on

11:46

top of that log.

11:48

Hiya, folks! Was Rabbit.

11:51

Welcome, Rabbit. Don't

11:53

you look snuck as a buck on

11:55

that log. You just

11:57

earned yourself the fourth

11:59

position. in the Zodiac.

12:02

Fourth! That's

12:04

marvelous! And miraculous!

12:08

Miraculous? How so? Well, when I

12:10

came to the river and

12:12

saw how wide and fast it

12:14

was, I got nervous about

12:16

swimming across. So I used my

12:18

smarts to figure out another

12:21

way to get to the other

12:23

side. I hopped across a

12:25

bunch of rocks that were sticking

12:27

up out of the water.

12:29

A most elegant solution! Well, people

12:32

do talk about how elegant

12:34

I am. But I haven't told

12:36

you the rest of the

12:38

story. You see, the rocks are

12:40

very slippery, and as I

12:42

was hopping my way across, I

12:45

lost my footing. Next thing

12:47

I knew, I was tumbling into

12:49

the water. Oh no! Oh

12:51

yes! But here's a miraculous part.

12:53

As I was thrashing and

12:55

splashing around, what should I spy

12:58

drifting my way, but this

13:00

log! I jumped up on top

13:02

of it, and somehow it

13:04

floated me all the way to

13:06

the finish line. You have

13:09

always been known for your luck,

13:11

Rabbit! So

13:13

congratulations! Now

13:15

we just need to wait

13:17

for the fifth animal to

13:19

arrive, and the Jade Emperor

13:21

fell into silence. Because at

13:23

that very moment, the Riverside

13:25

fell into shadow, as if

13:27

a bank of storm clouds

13:29

had scutted in and blocked

13:32

out the sun. But when

13:34

the Emperor and animals craned

13:36

their heads upward, it wasn't

13:38

storm clouds they spied. It

13:40

was the fifth animal to

13:42

finish the race, and the

13:44

surprising one so far! Who

13:50

do you think the fifth place

13:53

winner is? We'll find out after a

15:32

Rebecca Scheer. Welcome back to Circle

15:35

Round. Today our story is

15:37

called The Zodiac 12. Before

15:47

the break, the Jade Emperor

15:49

was holding a race to determine

15:51

the 12 animals of the

15:53

Zodiac. Rat used his crafty ways

15:56

to toss cat into the

15:58

water and finish first. Ox

16:00

came in second and Tiger

16:02

came in third. After Rabbit

16:04

earned fourth place by floating

16:06

to shore on a log,

16:08

the riverbank was plunged into

16:10

darkness. Hovering in the air

16:12

above, his scaly body so

16:14

massive it blocked out the

16:16

sun, was dragon. He gave

16:18

his tail a flick, then

16:20

glided down to the bank.

16:22

Greetings, friends. How

16:24

did I do? You

16:26

did very well, dragon. As

16:29

the fifth animal to

16:31

reach the finish line, you

16:33

shall be the fifth

16:35

animal in the Zodiac. But

16:37

if I may ask, given

16:40

how powerful you can fly,

16:43

what took you so long to get

16:45

here? That's a mighty

16:48

fine question, Your Majesty.

16:50

And I have a

16:52

mighty fine answer. As

16:55

I was racing through the

16:57

air, I kept my eyes

16:59

fixed on the ground below.

17:01

At some point I happened

17:03

to catch sight of a

17:05

village and what a woe -be

17:07

-gone village it was. There

17:10

hadn't been a drop of

17:12

rain in weeks, so the

17:14

fields were withered, the villagers

17:16

were hungry and thirsty. What

17:18

else could I do but

17:20

take a detour and blow

17:22

some rain clouds their way?

17:24

Goodness. That was very kind

17:26

of you, dragon. You've always

17:28

been so charitable. Well,

17:31

my charity didn't end there.

17:33

After saving the village,

17:35

I continued on my way.

17:37

And as I was

17:40

soaring above the river, I

17:42

saw Rabbit struggling against

17:44

the current. You

17:46

saw me? I

17:48

did more

17:50

than see you,

17:52

Rabbit. I

17:55

saved you. I

17:57

conjured a

17:59

breeze and blew

18:01

a big,

18:03

sturdy log your

18:05

way. Then

18:07

I used my

18:09

powers to... to

18:11

send you and that log

18:13

to shore. Oh, that is

18:15

so sweet of you, Dragon.

18:18

Thank you. Your consideration towards

18:20

others is commendable. Try? Please

18:22

mark down Dragon as the

18:24

fifth animal in the zodiac.

18:26

And mark me down as

18:28

six. Everyone

18:31

gave a start

18:33

as a long

18:35

wriggling creature came

18:38

slithering their way.

18:40

Hello there, Snake.

18:42

We didn't see

18:45

you coming. I

18:47

thought it would

18:49

be smudge to

18:51

stay inconspicuous. I

18:54

have always been

18:56

known as a

18:58

mysterious... Sooo. Now

19:01

you'll also be known as

19:03

the sixth animal after Zodiac.

19:06

Congratulations. As the scribe recorded

19:08

Snake's sixth place finish, there

19:10

was a clattering of hoofbeats

19:13

galloping down the riverside. Her

19:15

powerful legs kicking up a

19:17

cloud of dust was hoarse.

19:20

Greetings everyone. I hope I'm

19:22

not too late. As you

19:24

may know. We horses aren't

19:27

big fans of water, so

19:29

hoping I could run across

19:32

the river rather than swim.

19:34

I looked around and around

19:36

until I found a nice

19:39

shallow spot to cross. Then

19:41

I ran all this way

19:43

to get to you. Am

19:46

I one of the winners?

19:48

That you are horse! Scream!

19:50

Mark horse as the seventh

19:53

animal in the Zodiac! Oh

19:55

my gosh! This is the

19:58

the best

20:00

day ever. Horse

20:03

flashed rat, ox, tiger, rabbit,

20:05

dragon, and snake, a toothy

20:07

grin. As one of the

20:09

warmest and friendliest animals, she

20:11

was delighted to be in

20:13

such good company. And that

20:16

company was about to get

20:18

bigger. Did we get here

20:20

in time? Please tell us we

20:22

did. It would be too good to be

20:24

true. All

20:27

eyes turned to the river, where

20:29

goat, monkey, and rooster were

20:31

floating to shore on a raft

20:33

made of logs and vines. Welcome

20:36

to the finish line,

20:38

goat, monkey, and rooster.

20:40

How clever of you

20:42

to build that raft.

20:45

But Your Majesty, we

20:47

didn't build this raft. Rooster

20:50

found it tangled

20:52

in the weeds on the

20:54

other side of the river. So I

20:56

suggested we form a team

20:59

to see what we could

21:01

do. And

21:03

that's when I offered to

21:05

break the raft free by

21:08

eating all the weeds. And

21:10

I offered to carry the

21:12

raft to the water and

21:14

steer it with a stick. So,

21:18

now that we're

21:20

here with you, tell

21:23

us, how did we do?

21:26

You did well, very well indeed.

21:29

Now, goat, for

21:31

the creativity you displayed

21:34

by breaking the raft

21:36

free with your appetite,

21:38

you shall be the

21:40

eighth animal in the

21:42

zodiac. Thank you, Your

21:44

Majesty. And monkey,

21:46

for the nimbleness you

21:48

showed in getting you

21:50

and your friends across

21:52

the river, you shall

21:54

be ninth. Oh, thank

21:56

you, Your Majesty. but

21:59

least, But not least, Rooster,

22:02

for the leadership you

22:04

demonstrated by bringing this

22:06

team together. You shall

22:08

be tenth. Your majesty.

22:10

Thank you. The question

22:12

now is, who shall

22:14

our next finisher be?

22:16

The Jade Emperor didn't

22:19

need to wait long

22:21

for an answer, because

22:23

just then... Loyal and

22:25

faithful dog came bounding

22:27

over, his shaggy body

22:29

dripping with water. Well,

22:31

your majesty, how did

22:33

I do in the

22:35

race? Did I make

22:38

it into the zodiac?

22:40

You did make it,

22:42

dog. The 11th position

22:44

is officially yours. Though

22:46

given how fast you

22:48

run and how well

22:50

you swim, I assume

22:52

you would finish the

22:55

race sooner. And I

22:57

meant to, I really

22:59

did. But the water

23:01

was so cool and

23:03

refreshing and I was

23:05

having so much fun

23:07

splashing around. I guess

23:09

I lost track of

23:11

time. That's all right.

23:14

It's in your nature

23:16

to be fun-loving and

23:18

playful. Since you're the

23:20

eleventh animal in the

23:22

Zodiac, let's wait and

23:24

see who's number 12.

23:27

The group on the shore

23:29

waited. And waited. Until, at

23:32

last, who should come waddling

23:34

toward them? But, pig. Sorry

23:37

if I'm late. You know,

23:39

we pigs are great runners,

23:42

and swimmers. But we're also

23:44

great eaters. And after the

23:47

race started, my belly started

23:49

growling. So I stopped for

23:51

an early morning snack. Then

23:54

I stopped for a late

23:56

morning snack. Then I stopped

23:59

for lunch. Then I stopped

24:01

for tea. Then I felt

24:03

so sleepy, I had to

24:05

take a nap. So, two

24:08

questions. Did I win? And

24:10

who wants to join me

24:13

for dinner? The Jade Emperor

24:15

gave Pig's pink

24:17

head a friendly

24:19

pet. We appreciate

24:21

the invitation, Pig. You've

24:24

always been so generous

24:26

and caring. And

24:29

I am pleased to report

24:31

that you did win. You

24:33

earned yourself the 12th position

24:35

in the Zodiac. The Jade

24:38

Emperor motioned for the scribe

24:40

to record Pig as the

24:42

final winning contestant. Then he

24:45

raised his arms high in

24:47

the air. My friends,

24:50

I thank you for

24:52

your splendid effort today.

24:54

From this moment forward.

24:56

You shall all be

24:59

remembered with gratitude and

25:01

honor as the 12th

25:03

animal of the sodium.

25:05

Hang on a minute! The

25:08

animals ceased their

25:10

cheering and swiveled

25:12

their eyes toward bedraggled,

25:15

breathless, cat. Her sodden

25:18

body was trembling. and

25:20

her disheveled hair was

25:23

standing on end. Am

25:25

I too late to

25:28

earn a place in

25:30

the Zodiac? I am

25:33

afraid you are, Cat.

25:35

The 12 winners have

25:37

already been chosen.

25:39

They have? Who came in

25:42

first place? I rather

25:44

good friend of yours,

25:46

I believe. The first

25:49

animal in the zodiac

25:51

is officially rat. Cat

25:53

froze and she arched

25:56

her back, twitched her tail,

25:58

and fixed her... her

26:00

glittering eyes on her

26:03

former friend. You,

26:05

you, you rat! You

26:07

betrayed me, and

26:10

now you're going to

26:12

pay. With a

26:14

hiss and a yowl, cat

26:16

sprang into the air and lunged

26:18

at rat. The quick thinking

26:21

rodent leaped out of the way,

26:23

then took off down the

26:25

shore, scampering and scurrying as fast

26:27

as his tiny legs could

26:29

carry him. Cat never forgave rat

26:31

for his betrayal, and that's

26:33

why to this very day, cats

26:35

still chase rats. They're hoping

26:37

to get revenge on the cunning

26:39

little critter who tricked them

26:41

out of a position in the

26:43

zodiac and a place in

26:46

history. Now

26:56

it's your turn. Ask a grown -up

26:58

to help you find your animal of

27:00

the zodiac. You could check out

27:02

a book from the library or consult

27:04

the internet. Read through the list

27:06

of your animal's personality traits and see

27:08

which ones click with you. Then

27:11

find some paper and draw a picture

27:13

of your zodiac animal. Ask your

27:15

grown -up to snap a photo of

27:17

you and your artwork and email it

27:19

to circleround .org. We may feature it

27:21

in The Lion's Roar, the monthly

27:23

newsletter of the Circle Round Club. To
