Listener discretion is advised. Hi
1:13
everyone, I'm Tanya. And I'm Talya. And
1:16
we are Crimes and Consequences,
1:18
a true crime podcast. Hey,
1:32
Shannon. Hey,
1:36
Tanya. How are you doing? I am
1:39
doing great. How are you? I
1:42
am doing pretty good. I
1:44
was on YouTube this afternoon.
1:46
Yeah. And going
1:49
over some life choices I've made in these
1:51
54 years. And
1:53
I thought, you know what? I
1:55
may have missed my calling on
1:57
becoming a watercolor artist. I
2:02
fucking love watching those watercolor. I just
2:04
want to pull out my paints. Everything
2:08
else will be damned. I'm painting
2:11
and, you know, so I got to bring myself
2:13
down. Yeah. What do you do?
2:16
How is your day? Oh, it was
2:18
good. Busy at my new job. And,
2:20
you know, I have also been questioning
2:22
every life choice ever made in my
2:24
life. So it's been it's been a
2:26
depressing week, but quite
2:29
heavy, quite a heavy week. And
2:32
as I told you, it's not like I have a bad life
2:34
because I don't. Yeah, exactly.
2:37
You know, choices like sheikah,
2:39
angry fist at the sky
2:41
about, you know. And
2:44
I'm sure some of our listeners can
2:46
relate. So absolutely. You're a good company.
2:49
Yeah, we're a good company. But if
2:51
you want to do a watercolor, I'd
2:53
be happy to buy your first. I'll
2:55
be your first commission. Oh,
2:57
thank you. You're inspiring me. I'll think
3:00
it's not really good. Something
3:02
in the pinks to. Yes. Oh, after you
3:04
got. What
3:06
you got for us today? I
3:08
have the Lulu lemon murders today.
3:11
Have you ever heard of the
3:13
Lulu lemon murders? I
3:15
have not. OK, well, this is
3:17
one you all need to buckle
3:19
up for. So in. So yeah,
3:21
you're in for quite the gruesome
3:23
story. So first I'm going to
3:25
tell you about a woman named
3:27
Jana Trexel Murray. She was born
3:29
in Wichita, Kansas on November 22nd,
3:31
1980. So
3:34
she is a Sagittarius.
3:37
Oh, she is. And she
3:39
was born to her very loving family.
3:41
Soon after her birth, the Murray family
3:44
moved to Houston, Texas. Jana
3:46
had two older brothers named Hugh and
3:48
Dirk. They were both married at the
3:50
time of our story. Hugh was married
3:52
to a woman named Kate and Dirk
3:54
was married to a woman named April
3:56
and they had two
3:58
boys together, Casey and Jay's. So
4:00
she was an. Yeah, the
4:02
Murray parents, Jana's parents, they
4:04
were David and Phyllis. They were
4:07
just unbelievably proud of their
4:09
three children. And
4:11
they loved their grandchildren. I mean, they were
4:14
just a really tight-knit family. Right.
4:17
Yeah. Jana's dad, David, was
4:19
a special operations person who did
4:21
two tours in Vietnam. And
4:24
in the Murray family, there was a strong
4:27
sense of right versus wrong. All
4:29
American values, right? Quote on quote.
4:31
Sure. And the military,
4:33
very black and white. Right.
4:36
Jana being the youngest and the only
4:38
girl, she really was the
4:41
glue that held this family together. Her
4:44
brothers and their wives loved her so much
4:46
as she's growing up and making a life for
4:49
herself. The Murray family is seeing
4:52
her thrive and they're really excited. So
4:54
when Jana started college, she studied
4:57
at St. Louis University in Madrid,
4:59
Spain for two years before
5:01
finishing her bachelor's degree at George
5:03
Washington University in Washington, DC in
5:05
2003. See,
5:08
that's another life choice I didn't
5:10
make was studying abroad. So I
5:13
exactly got to scribble
5:15
that one off for
5:17
the lifetime column. Good
5:21
for you, Jana. I know. Good for
5:23
you. During her undergraduate years, Jana also
5:26
did a semester at C and I
5:29
don't know what that entails, but
5:31
it sounds fun, right? It does. And
5:34
after graduation, Jana started working for
5:36
a company called Halliburton where she
5:38
was a market rep for
5:41
five years. We've all
5:43
heard Halliburton, right? Oh yeah. With
5:46
a love of learning and goals
5:48
to accomplish, Jana decided to continue
5:50
her education at John Hopkins University.
5:52
It's quite prestigious. And
5:54
so impressive with all this
5:56
education. I love that she
5:58
pursued it. time, everywhere
6:00
she went, if she wanted it,
6:03
she went after it. She was
6:05
working toward earning a dual master's
6:07
in communication and a master's in
6:09
business administration. She left
6:12
her job at Halliburton to focus
6:14
on school and decided to take
6:16
a part-time job as a sales
6:18
team leader at a local Lulu
6:20
lemon store. This job really allowed
6:22
her to feed her passions of
6:24
dance, travel, and animals. She
6:27
was also extensively involved
6:29
in volunteering with various
6:31
different groups and organizations
6:34
and working at Lulu lemon gave her
6:36
networking opportunities and just like a positive
6:38
energy around the workplace. You know, I
6:40
guess it was a really good place
6:42
to work. Nice culture, good work
6:46
culture. Yeah, the
6:48
Lulu lemon franchise really spoke to
6:50
her personally and she planned
6:52
to apply to the Lulu lemon corporate
6:55
office in Vancouver, British Columbia. I didn't
6:57
know that were based. Neither. She was
6:59
going to apply there after graduation after
7:01
she got her dual master's
7:04
degree. So while Lulu lemon was
7:06
originally a part-time gig for
7:08
Jana, she fell in love with the company
7:11
and ended up dedicating all her studies toward
7:14
the company and wrote her
7:16
thesis about Lulu lemon. Wow.
7:19
Yeah. Probably for her business
7:21
administration degree. Yeah. Although Jana had finished
7:23
her thesis, she continued to work at
7:25
the store because she loved it. And
7:27
by the end of it, she went
7:30
from part-time to truly part of the
7:32
Lulu lemon family. Right. All
7:34
while juggling her master's program and working
7:36
at the Lulu. I don't
7:39
know if that's stupid or not,
7:41
but yeah. Jana was
7:43
also in a long distance relationship
7:45
with her boyfriend. His name was
7:47
Frasier Bosel, who was also
7:50
a student at Washington state. Jana
7:52
and Frasier had been together for a
7:54
long time and they were starting to
7:56
plan a future together. Frasier had actually
7:59
asked David and Phyllis. if he could
8:01
have Jana's hand in marriage after they
8:03
both graduated. Wow. I
8:06
know. Her relationship with Frasier was
8:08
also part of the reason she wanted
8:10
to work in Vancouver. Frasier was living
8:13
in Washington at the time, the state,
8:15
Washington state, not Washington DC. So she
8:17
would be in the corporate
8:19
office was close and Frasier's living in
8:21
Washington. So, you know, it's kind of
8:24
ideal, right? Right. Jana
8:26
was described as the girl who was
8:28
incredibly ambitious and willing to approach change
8:30
head on. What she didn't
8:33
know was that her life, unfortunately,
8:35
was about to tragically change and
8:38
all of her goals and dreams would come crashing
8:40
down. Oh, boy. So on
8:42
March 11, 2011,
8:44
Jana was working the closing shift
8:47
at the Lulu Lemon Store in
8:49
Bethesda, Maryland with her coworker,
8:51
28 year old Brittany
8:53
Norwood. Jana was a very
8:56
trusted store employee and
8:58
was the only person working that night
9:00
who had a key to the store.
9:02
Themingly, the night ended normally and both
9:05
women went home safely. However, the next
9:07
morning, March 12, store
9:09
manager Rachel arrived at 8 a.m. to
9:11
reopen the store for the day. And
9:14
when she arrived, she noticed the front
9:16
door of the store was unlocked, which
9:19
was very unusual. And
9:21
Rachel figured, well, maybe Jana just forgot
9:24
to lock it the night before. So
9:26
Rachel goes into the store and she
9:28
notices that something's wrong. There
9:30
was a mannequin that was laying
9:32
on the floor. Clothes had been
9:34
thrown about and some clothing racks
9:36
had been tipped over. So Rachel
9:38
immediately thought the store had been
9:40
robbed and she quickly exited the
9:42
building. You know, she was planning
9:44
to run to the nearby Apple store. It was
9:46
right next door to the Lulu Lemon in the
9:48
strip mall. And that's where she was going to
9:50
call the police from. But
9:53
that day, Apple was releasing the iPad 2.
9:55
Oh, my
9:57
goodness. iPad 2. And
10:00
the line was already growing long outside
10:02
of the store. People lined up on
10:06
that new iPad. That's right. And
10:09
one of the people in the line noticed
10:11
Rachel cause she was frantic and that person
10:13
jumped out of line to check on her.
10:16
And after explaining what she had seen in the store,
10:19
the person from the line, his name
10:21
was Ryan. He offered to walk her
10:23
back into the store and check things
10:25
out for her so that she would
10:27
feel comfortable to start her day in
10:29
the store and
10:32
see how the police arrived. After
10:35
all, if it's just a robbery, there's nobody,
10:37
it's just merchandise that's being stolen or
10:39
any from the cash register. Like there
10:42
shouldn't be anybody, like
10:44
a criminal still there. Hopefully
10:46
not, right? Yeah. And
10:48
in fact, if you go to
10:50
Lulu Bemin, they have a policy
10:52
that if someone comes in and
10:55
steals, they just let the person
10:57
walk with whatever and they report
10:59
it to the corporation and police
11:01
only if necessary. Oh my
11:03
gosh. I'm not encouraging anybody
11:05
to steal anything. Exactly what.
11:09
Where are we going to Lulu Lemon,
11:12
Tanya? Yeah. I don't know
11:14
if they still have this policy, but back
11:16
then. At the time, sure. Yes. Rachel
11:18
agreed with Ryan. And so the
11:20
two of them headed back into
11:22
the Lulu Lemon store. The further
11:24
they went into the store, the
11:26
more damage though they noticed. The
11:29
cash register had been opened and emptied
11:31
along with the safe that was inside
11:33
the store. At this point,
11:35
Ryan and Rachel, they're convinced that
11:37
this is just a robbery. It
11:39
just has all the telltale signs.
11:41
Yes. Yeah. Rachel
11:44
headed to the back room where
11:46
she found shattered glass and a
11:48
total disaster of merchandise. But
11:51
what really alarmed her was that she found
11:53
blood and a lot of it. Looking
11:55
further, there was a trail of blood
11:57
that looked like someone had been dragged.
12:00
across the floor and there
12:02
were two sets of bloody footprints of different
12:04
sizes. Upon this discovery,
12:06
Rachel and Ryan literally ran back
12:08
to the front of the store
12:11
and immediately called the police. Yeah.
12:14
Rachel didn't feel comfortable going back into
12:16
the store, but Ryan was concerned that
12:18
maybe someone was there that needed help.
12:21
Right. So he went back inside on
12:23
his own to investigate further. He
12:26
went over to where the trail of blood was
12:28
and he followed it further to the
12:30
back of the store and that's where he
12:32
found a battered woman laying face down in
12:34
a pool of blood with a rope tied
12:37
around her neck. He knew
12:39
right away that this woman was dead. Yeah.
12:42
Of course he was probably panicked
12:44
a little flustered or whatever. And
12:47
in shock when he heard a
12:49
faint moaning sound coming from the
12:52
employee bathroom. After what
12:54
he just saw, Ryan wasn't completely sure
12:56
he wanted to follow the sound, but
12:59
he did, he braved it. And in
13:01
the bathroom, he found Brittany bound
13:03
at the ankles and wrists, arms
13:05
above her head, covered in blood
13:07
and barely breathing. This
13:10
sent him running again to the
13:12
sidewalk out front to tell Rachel
13:14
what he found and say she
13:16
needed to call 911 again and
13:19
immediate medical attention, not just
13:21
the police. Right. So
13:24
on the phone with 911 the second
13:26
time, Rachel frantically said that one person
13:28
seemed dead, but the other was breathing
13:30
and you know, someone had tied up
13:32
this woman. Right. So Brittany
13:34
was covered in cuts all
13:37
along her arms and legs. She had
13:39
a large wound on her forehead and
13:42
there was a Lulu lemon shirt wrapped around her neck.
13:44
The crotch of her leggings had a
13:47
huge hole torn in them, leading police
13:49
to believe that she'd been sexually assaulted.
13:52
At the time, Brittany wasn't responding to like
13:54
questions and stuff. She seemed to go in
13:56
and out of consciousness. Dana, however,
13:58
was the one that did. survive and
14:01
her body was just absolutely battered.
14:04
An autopsy would later reveal that
14:06
Jana had been stabbed at least.
14:09
Get this 331 times. That
14:13
is fucking diabolical. Right. That is unnecessary.
14:15
Right. You know how long, I mean,
14:17
not that I've done it, but do
14:19
you know how long it must have
14:21
taken to staff or 331 times? I
14:25
mean, that is something that usually
14:27
I hear goes with crimes of
14:30
passion. You got to hate that
14:32
motherfucker and go blind and rage.
14:34
Right. If that's not
14:36
this, then it's. This is
14:38
overtook. Yeah. So sick.
14:41
So it was clear that her death wasn't
14:43
quick and that it was a slow and
14:46
brutal attack. Police found various
14:48
items around the store that were most
14:50
likely used in the attack. They found
14:52
a bloody hanger, a rock. Wrenches,
14:56
a hammer, a knife,
15:00
and they found a peg that was
15:02
normally used to stand the mannequins, like
15:04
maybe like in the back of them
15:06
or something. The police believe
15:08
that these items were used to attack the women
15:10
with Brittany being alive. She
15:12
was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
15:15
She only ended up needing a few stitches
15:17
and they did do a rape kit at
15:19
the hospital. Police were grateful
15:22
that most of her wounds were
15:24
superficial because we're Jana, they now
15:26
have this brutal murderer, whoever did
15:28
this to her on the
15:30
loose. And you know, they need to
15:32
apprehend this person as soon as possible.
15:35
And maybe he can help them identify
15:37
who did this. As soon
15:39
as she was able, Brittany told police what
15:41
happened that night. She said it was like
15:44
any other closing shift. She had only been
15:46
hired six months prior. So she was relatively
15:48
new to the store. Right. After
15:50
the final customer left around 9 PM,
15:52
she and Jana locked up the store
15:55
and they started their closing duties. They
15:57
counted the cash drawer. They straightened things
15:59
up. And they got everything ready for
16:01
the next morning. Lots
16:03
of women left together and Brittany
16:05
watched Jana get into her car
16:08
before Brittany walked over to the
16:10
train station. When Brittany
16:12
got to the train station, she realized
16:14
she forgot her Metro pass in the
16:17
store and she wouldn't be able
16:19
to get home. Since Jana was the only one
16:21
with the key and Brittany's
16:23
new, she had to call
16:25
the few contacts she had of other coworkers
16:27
to see if they had Jana's number. She's
16:30
called, you know, she gets it and she
16:32
calls Jana to ask if she could meet
16:34
her back in the store so that she
16:36
could get her Metro pass. Being
16:39
the awesome human being that she was,
16:41
Jana said of course, you know, that
16:43
she was going to meet her. It'd
16:45
just be a few minutes and then
16:47
they met back at the store. Brittany
16:49
recalled that Jana told her she had actually
16:52
left her laptop at the store. So she
16:54
really didn't mind turning around because she was
16:56
gonna grab that instead of having to go
16:58
to the store the next day. When
17:00
Jana arrived back at the store, Brittany said
17:02
that she unlocked the door and the two
17:04
women went inside, closing the door behind them,
17:07
but not locking it. Brittany
17:09
told the police that while Jana grabbed
17:11
her laptop right away, she
17:13
couldn't find her Metro pass where she thought
17:15
it was and Jana started to help her
17:17
search for it. During their
17:19
search, Brittany and Jana were ambushed by
17:21
two men in black ski masks. Brittany
17:25
recalled that a bigger man grabbed Jana
17:27
and hit her over the head, knocking
17:29
her to the floor. A smaller man
17:31
grabbed her and dragged her by her
17:33
hair to the employee bathroom. And Brittany
17:35
told police that this is the last
17:37
time she actually saw Jana. The
17:40
smaller man eventually brought her to the registers
17:42
and the safe and forced her to open
17:44
them and put all
17:46
the cash into a black backpack that he had.
17:49
Brittany was then taken to the back room
17:51
where she was zip tied and tortured by
17:53
the smaller man. Brittany recalled
17:55
the man holding her by the hair
17:57
with a knife to her throat, threatening
17:59
to. slit her throat. Brittany told the
18:01
police that the man raped her and
18:04
was very careful to not inflict any
18:06
wounds that would kill her, but
18:08
have her begging for him to stop. So he,
18:10
you know, he's probably like
18:12
slicing her and stuff like that. Oh, right.
18:15
Brittany then said when he was done with
18:17
her, he left her alone in the back
18:19
room for a while. And when he came
18:22
back, Brittany recalled that he sexually assaulted her
18:24
again with a wooden store hanger. Yeah.
18:28
Brittany then told the police that during
18:30
her attack, she heard violent
18:32
and horrible screams coming from Jana in
18:34
the other room. Eventually
18:36
the screams went silent and both
18:38
men carried Brittany to the other
18:41
room where Jana was at
18:43
this point, Brittany was unsure if Jana was alive.
18:46
And she told police that the two men told
18:48
her she was lucky that she got the better
18:50
version of the attack because she
18:52
was more fun to fuck is what she
18:54
said. Oh
18:56
my gosh. Yeah. It's
18:58
disgusting. Pigs. Right.
19:00
During her recount of the night to police,
19:03
Brittany was absolutely distraught and she felt like
19:05
this was all her fault because she was
19:07
the one to call Jana and ask her
19:09
to, you know, come back to the store
19:11
so she could get her Metro pass. Right.
19:14
After hearing Brittany's story, the police
19:16
were immediately getting to work to
19:18
try and gather any information they
19:20
could about these two masked men.
19:22
Lucky for them. The Apple store
19:24
that was located just next door
19:27
had CCTV cameras that pointed at
19:29
the Lululemon storefront. Apple
19:31
was the only store on the
19:33
strip that had cameras pointed there.
19:35
So they were lucky. Yeah. On
19:37
the security footage from Apple, they
19:39
did find two white men who
19:41
were dressed in all black with
19:43
beanies on that walk past the
19:45
store around the time Brittany claimed
19:47
they were attacked. Not
19:49
only did Apple provide the CCTV footage,
19:51
but four employees that were working that
19:53
night basically heard the entire thing at
19:55
the Apple store. Oh my
19:57
gosh. The three employees and one
19:59
security guard stated that they started
20:01
hearing screaming coming from the store.
20:03
Like two women were fighting. They
20:05
heard one woman saying, please talk
20:07
to me. Don't do this. Talk
20:09
to me. What's going on? The
20:12
arguing was followed by whales screaming
20:14
and crying until they heard a
20:16
woman say, God help me. Please
20:19
help me. Unfortunately, the Apple employees
20:21
didn't call the police that night.
20:23
A choice that could have changed.
20:25
Jane. Oh my gosh. I don't
20:27
even under. I was just thinking,
20:29
how do you fucking hear someone
20:31
begging? Yeah. Hi, I'm over
20:33
here at the Apple store and I'm
20:36
hearing that next door. Someone's
20:38
screaming. Right. Right. Easy peasy
20:40
lemon squeezy. I can't tell
20:42
you how many stories we've
20:44
done where people see
20:46
something, hear something and don't
20:48
call the police. And I always think I
20:51
would call the police, right? Like I think
20:53
I would, I would hope I think I would
20:55
when I hear if I was screaming for her
20:57
life. I think if I was in the next
21:00
store next to it and I was
21:02
at the time, fuck you, I'm calling
21:04
the police, right? Exactly. I
21:07
don't know. Oh, one store
21:09
employee actually said the screaming was so loud.
21:11
It sounded like whoever was screaming was actually
21:13
in the Apple store and not next door.
21:16
And still no call. It's still no call. No.
21:20
After all that noise, the store employees
21:22
reported that then they heard some grunting
21:24
sounds and it sounded like something big
21:27
was being dragged or moved across the
21:29
store. The Apple store manager
21:31
told police that they felt like it was
21:33
just some drama and it was none of
21:35
their business. Maybe I don't
21:38
know. Cowards will say
21:40
something of that. Oh,
21:43
I thought they were play acting. I thought
21:45
it was some Shakespeare in the park. My
21:48
bad. Yeah. At the fucking Lulu lemon. Yeah.
21:50
At 9 PM. Yeah,
21:53
exactly. Not
21:55
one of them who was working at
21:58
Apple that night felt like they needed
22:00
to. least go check on whoever was
22:02
there despite everything they heard through the
22:04
walls. Go
22:30
to unlock.com/radio to unlock the value in your
22:32
home and get up to $500,000 in
22:46
cash with no monthly payments and no
22:48
interest ever. Pay off debt, improve your
22:51
home, add to your retirement fund. It's
22:53
up to you. Go to unlock.com/radio right
22:55
now to see if you qualify to
22:57
unlock the value in your home. It's
23:00
unlock.com/radio. Go
23:03
to unlock.com/radio. It's
23:06
just unbelievable. Police were
23:09
also able to use the store security
23:11
system records to know when the alarm
23:13
had been armed and disarmed. It was
23:15
armed at 9 45
23:17
when the women first left the store and then disarmed at 10
23:19
0 5 p.m. assuming
23:21
that this is when Brittany and Jana
23:24
returned to the store to get the
23:26
metro pass and laptop. With a timeline
23:28
coming into place police were now starting
23:30
to focus on Jana's car. Brittany
23:33
recalled that Jana parked in front of the
23:35
store but the next morning Jana's car was
23:37
nowhere to be found. Police
23:39
were now thinking that the two masked men
23:41
must have likely stolen Jana's
23:43
car after the attack. Luckily
23:46
for police Jana had Texas plates and being
23:48
in DC it was most likely going to
23:50
be you know maybe easy to spot her.
23:53
Yeah right. It was like millions of people
23:55
but I don't know. Her
23:57
car had actually been spotted the night
23:59
of the murder around midnight a few
24:01
blocks from the store, a police officer
24:03
drove past the parked vehicle and said
24:05
the lights were on inside and there
24:07
was one passenger. Two hours later around
24:09
2 a.m., that same police officer drove
24:11
by Jana's car again. And this time
24:14
there was no light on and no
24:16
passenger inside. Jana's car was still
24:18
parked in that same spot and
24:20
police were able to take it in as
24:22
evidence. Right. While waiting
24:24
for fingerprints, DNA and any other
24:26
evidence they could collect from the
24:28
car, police focused on finding the
24:30
two men from the Apple CCTV
24:32
footage. Although they did
24:35
have them on video, the angle wasn't
24:37
that great. And even though it showed
24:40
them, you really couldn't be thought of
24:42
information from it. Right. A detective decided
24:44
that he was going to do a
24:46
stakeout on the storefront, hoping that the
24:48
two men would return to the scene.
24:50
And they did believe that. When
24:53
he saw two men, he thought may
24:55
have been the attackers. He walked up
24:57
to them, showed them a photo of
24:59
the CCTV footage and asked them if
25:01
he recognized them. Both
25:04
the men immediately told the detective that
25:06
the guys in the picture were them
25:09
and that they worked at a restaurant a
25:11
few blocks away from Lulu Lemon. The
25:13
men often walked together because they lived in
25:16
the same direction. They were
25:18
wearing all black because that was the
25:20
uniform in the restaurant. OK.
25:23
So detectives were able to quickly
25:25
verify their alibi. None of
25:27
the evidence that they had was now adding
25:29
up and detectives were starting to realize that
25:31
maybe some of the details Brittany told them
25:34
wasn't adding up. Right. What
25:36
was really getting at them was that
25:39
Jana's attack was so much more brutal
25:42
than Brittany's. Yes. Like
25:45
stab 331 times and Brittany's not
25:47
stabbed once. Yeah, Brittany has
25:49
a whole bunch of superficial razor
25:51
blade or knife blade cuts that
25:53
maybe Purell will sting the fuck
25:55
out of. But yeah, you still
25:58
get through life. Exactly.
26:00
It was, you know,
26:02
just unusual how different they
26:05
were treated. Right. So let me
26:07
tell you a little bit about Brittany Norwood. Okay.
26:09
Brittany was born and raised in
26:12
Washington State to a huge family.
26:15
She was one of nine children and her
26:17
father ran a small business. The
26:19
Norwood family didn't have much, but all
26:21
of their children had goals and dreams.
26:24
Brittany played soccer growing up and she
26:26
was being recruited all across America to
26:28
play college soccer. She was apparently really
26:31
good. Nice. She
26:33
ended up signing with Stony Brook College
26:35
to play college soccer on a scholarship,
26:37
and this was her big break. She
26:40
was able to move across the country
26:42
and follow her dreams. Her
26:45
college soccer career quickly ended when
26:47
she left Stony Brook in 2003
26:49
after being accused of stealing from
26:52
many different people, including teammates and
26:54
roommates. Oh boy. Yeah.
26:56
Brittany was even accused of stealing
26:58
from random people on campus. While
27:02
charges were never filed, this destroyed
27:04
her soccer career and her educational
27:06
pursuits. She was kicked off the
27:08
team. She lost her
27:10
scholarship and she was thrown out of school.
27:13
Wow. Yeah. That's what
27:15
happens. Fuck around and find out. That's right.
27:18
Yeah. I'll keep you. Don't
27:20
touch other people's things. Yeah. You know, just
27:22
don't, don't steal shit, right? I
27:24
mean, that's not like
27:26
a bitch here. Don't touch
27:29
other people's shit. Right. I mean,
27:32
good God. In the
27:34
attempt to do some soul searching, Brittany moved
27:36
to Washington, DC, where she was able to
27:38
be close to two of her sisters. Upon
27:42
arriving in DC, Brittany got a job
27:44
at the Willard intercontinental hotel and started
27:46
to rebuild her life. She
27:49
was successful at this job. She started at
27:51
the front desk, but was soon promoted
27:54
to VIP guest
27:56
services. Oh, while it
27:58
was a great job, she was feeling
28:00
lost. because this wasn't what she pictured
28:02
for herself. She was probably also questioning
28:05
her life choices. Sure, sure. Brittany
28:07
always had a dream of becoming
28:09
a personal trainer. She was dedicated
28:11
to her own physical fitness and
28:13
the whole world of fitness in
28:15
general. In her spare
28:17
time, she was attending various workout
28:19
classes and hoping to be
28:22
able to immerse herself in that community, in
28:24
her new- Yeah, that culture of- That
28:28
passion was what led Brittany to getting
28:30
a job at Lululemon at the Georgetown
28:33
store in 2010. In
28:35
early 2011, Brittany transferred to
28:37
the Bethesda location of Lululemon
28:40
and she was almost a
28:42
perfect salesperson. She was fit,
28:44
outgoing, and people were drawn to her. She
28:47
really sold the Lululemon brand,
28:50
you know, looks and all. Like she
28:52
was perfect- Walking model of it, for
28:54
sure. At the time
28:56
of her transfer, it was only supposed to
28:58
be temporary. Brittany was looking to expand her
29:01
horizons and wanted to get a new job
29:03
at a fitness center near the store. That
29:06
was all before the night of March 11th, 2011, when
29:10
Brittany seemed to have snapped.
29:14
With this feeling that Brittany was possibly
29:16
involved in the murder, police decided that
29:18
they needed to look at the case
29:20
from the start again. The
29:22
first thing they noticed was that the
29:24
supposed attackers didn't bring any of their
29:26
own weapons. All
29:29
the weapons used in the attack were things that
29:31
were found in the store. Not only that, but
29:33
if they didn't bring any weapons, how did they
29:35
plan to get into the store? It
29:38
was clear that the suspected robbery was
29:40
supposed to happen after the store was
29:42
closed. Also, you know, I mean, how are
29:44
they going to get in if they didn't bring anything? Right.
29:48
Also, it's typical that after robbers get
29:50
the job done, they leave the scene
29:52
as soon as possible to lessen the
29:54
chances of them getting caught. Right.
29:57
According to Brittany's story, emptying the
29:59
registered in the safe
30:01
was one of the first things they
30:03
did, but then they started this attack
30:06
on both of them. Yeah, this timeline
30:08
is all stinky. Yeah. So
30:10
this really wasn't adding up to police and
30:13
there was more. The bloody footprints in the
30:15
store were a big question mark. There
30:17
were two different sets of footprints found at the
30:20
scene. One men's size 14,
30:22
that was actually a re-back and
30:24
the other footprint was a much
30:27
smaller woman's size. If
30:29
there were really two attackers, there would
30:31
have been three sets of footprints. Right.
30:35
The key men and then Brittany's since she was
30:37
still alive. At the scene,
30:39
one men's size 14 shoe
30:42
was found and police assumed that maybe
30:44
the attacker ditched it at the store
30:46
before leaving, but the store manager, Rachel,
30:48
debunked this theory immediately by telling police
30:50
that the shoe was property of the
30:52
store and they allowed customers to use
30:54
it when trying on clothes to complete
30:57
the look. Oh, okay. I
31:00
guess they got shoes there you can try
31:02
on. That is so crazy. Nice. They have
31:04
men's clothing at Lululemon. Yeah, if you want
31:06
to complete the ensemble. Yeah,
31:08
we got some shoes. See where that
31:10
can't have lies. Yeah. You're gonna
31:12
need a shoe. Right. What
31:15
was even more odd was that it
31:17
appeared that the bigger bloody shoe prints
31:19
were exactly on top of the smaller
31:21
shoe prints. Either the
31:24
attackers were quite literally following the
31:26
exact same path or these larger
31:28
prints were meant to try and
31:30
cover up the smaller ones. Oh.
31:33
Going even further, the gash on
31:35
Brittany's forehead didn't make sense. Why
31:38
would the attacker aim for the middle of her forehead
31:40
and not the side of her head? What
31:42
made more sense with that injury is
31:44
if Brittany was on top of Jana
31:46
stabbing her, that she could have accidentally
31:48
hit herself in the forehead. Right.
31:52
Additionally, Brittany told police that the zip
31:54
ties that were used to tie her
31:56
up came from one of the men's
31:59
backpacks when they actually belonged. to the
32:01
store. Like the, she said the robbers
32:03
brought the, Oh, from their own supplies
32:05
that did that exist.
32:07
Yes. Furthermore, the zip ties on
32:09
her hands had teeth marks indicating
32:12
they were tightened up by teeth and
32:14
not hands, which is something Brittany would
32:16
have to do if she was tying
32:18
herself up. Yes. The
32:20
biggest discrepancy was simply the
32:22
difference between the two attacks.
32:25
All of Brittany's injuries were superficial
32:27
and her rate kit revealed nothing. Brittany
32:29
told police that the attackers had told
32:32
her they knew her address and
32:34
they were using racial slurs against
32:36
her. Brittany painted the picture
32:38
that she was potentially the original target,
32:40
but it was clear the attack on
32:42
Jana was personal, like you said. This
32:45
led police to believe that maybe Brittany was
32:48
involved with the attackers and it was a
32:50
robbery gone wrong. It wasn't until
32:52
later in the investigation that Rachel, the
32:55
store manager, told police that they were
32:57
actually having problems with Brittany in the
32:59
workplace. It seemed that she
33:02
and Jana didn't really get along and
33:04
not only Jana, but other employees had
33:06
problems with. Right. Well, they
33:09
were suspicious that Brittany was stealing from
33:11
the store and
33:14
other coworkers. These suspicions went
33:16
so far as there was actually a
33:18
meeting held with store owners and managers
33:20
to come up with a plan to
33:22
attempt to prevent this. The
33:25
protocol at the store was that whenever an
33:27
employee brought a bag to work and was
33:29
leaving after their shift, the manager at the
33:32
store at the time would check their bag
33:34
to make sure that no unpaid items were
33:36
in their bag. Right. So
33:38
this was not only for Brittany, but
33:41
it was just, you know, regular protocol
33:43
for all employees. So it wasn't all
33:45
common practice. I remember working at some
33:47
shop, same thing. If you're working with
33:49
makeup, little things, big things, things that
33:52
can be hidden, you know, right.
33:54
I don't know. Plushy leggings
33:56
that can easily roll up and
33:58
hide in a. part
34:00
of your purse. Right, right. Yeah,
34:03
they're not bulky at all. No, gosh, not
34:06
at all. The day before the
34:08
murder, March 10th, 2011, Jana
34:10
went to do a routine bag check
34:12
on Brittany before she left and Brittany
34:14
told Jana that another employee had already
34:16
checked her bag. When Jana
34:19
double checked with that employee, they said
34:21
that they didn't actually check her bag.
34:24
So Jana reported this to Rachel that,
34:26
you know, she was pretty sure Brittany
34:28
stole another pair of leggings. And
34:30
now police are like, is this her
34:32
motive against Jana? By March 18th,
34:35
2011, Brittany was arrested for the murder. When
34:39
police brought her in for interrogation,
34:41
Brittany added more details to her
34:43
story and it just was not
34:45
adding up even more. Police decided
34:47
to take a more personal route
34:49
and bring in Brittany's brother, Chris
34:51
and sister Marissa. When the siblings
34:53
were all inside the interrogation room,
34:55
police ran through all the evidence
34:57
they had against Brittany and Marissa
34:59
completely broke down, having to leave
35:01
the room to attempt to calm
35:03
herself. Yeah. Police left Brittany alone
35:05
in the room with her brother, Chris, and Chris
35:07
asked Brittany to tell them the truth so that
35:10
they could get this worked out, to which Brittany
35:12
replied she didn't want to talk about it there.
35:14
So this personal approach had worked. Nice.
35:17
It was now believed that Brittany became
35:19
aware that her coworkers were onto her
35:21
ceiling and she knew that she was
35:23
going to be fired soon if she
35:25
was caught again. Brittany was
35:27
likely called Jana to meet her back
35:30
at the store so that they could
35:32
discuss the accusations. Jana told Rachel, but
35:34
once the conversation wasn't reaching a resolution,
35:36
it turned violent. Because remember those Apple
35:39
employees said there was women arguing? It
35:41
sounded like two women screaming at each
35:43
other. Yes. So Brittany's defense
35:45
attorney claimed that this was absolutely
35:48
not a premeditated murder, but
35:50
an undiagnosed mental disorder. He
35:53
claimed that it was clear that no
35:55
one in their sound mind could commit
35:57
the atrocities that Brittany did that night.
35:59
Like, okay, but they were committed. Yeah,
36:02
exactly. It committed so much that
36:05
she was able to make herself
36:07
look like she was a victim.
36:09
That sounds like a very clever
36:11
and planned and, and, and survivalistic
36:14
mode of. Warble lying
36:16
and there, there it is. There,
36:18
I don't get like how 331
36:20
stab wounds. I
36:23
get it. That sounds like mental illness.
36:26
Okay. Yeah, for sure. Especially because they're
36:28
not like lovers or something that would
36:30
that crime of passion that
36:32
is, you know, in
36:34
such cases, but this is just
36:37
straight up rage and hate. This
36:39
is, we all know
36:41
it's from her childhood. Yeah. Everything
36:45
stems from your child. Everything
36:47
stems and is her stealing
36:50
and what she was one of nine.
36:52
And I don't have our stories of
36:54
why we do what we do or
36:56
why we think we're justified by circumstance,
36:59
but. Exactly. Right.
37:01
Like, yeah, the
37:03
trial lasted six days and then Brittany
37:05
was quickly sentenced to life in prison
37:07
without the possibility of parole on January
37:10
27th, 2012. Brittany
37:13
has never talked about what exactly
37:15
happened that night between she and
37:17
Jana. Right. This
37:20
trial and the entire situation
37:22
was extremely difficult for Jana's
37:24
family. The Murray's. This
37:26
was especially because they originally felt
37:28
horrible for Brittany thinking that she
37:30
too was a victim of this
37:33
violent attack. After sentencing,
37:35
Brittany gave a public apology to the
37:37
Murray family in front of a packed
37:39
courtroom, Brittany stated that prior to getting
37:42
up there, she was unsure if she
37:44
would even speak. Brittany told
37:46
the courtroom and Jana's family that while she
37:48
knows her statement will never take the pain
37:51
away, she hopes that the family can one
37:53
day find it in their hearts to forgive
37:55
her. Brittany and her
37:57
legal team were hoping that the judge would
37:59
sentence her to. life with the possibility of
38:02
parole to give her some hope, but
38:04
nope. No, no. Yeah.
38:06
No, no, no. Judge Robert
38:09
a Greenberg said that after every single
38:11
one of the 331 plus wounds
38:15
she inflicted on Jana, she
38:17
had an opportunity to think
38:19
twice about what she was
38:21
doing and stop, but she
38:23
didn't. So judge Greenberg told
38:25
Brittany that she was devious
38:28
in control and one hell of
38:30
a liar. I agree.
38:32
I agree. All three devious,
38:35
one hell of a liar. I
38:38
don't even really think I don't believe
38:40
she wants forgiveness. She just wants to
38:42
be known that she said it. Yeah,
38:44
that's what I don't. Yeah. I don't
38:47
really feel any kind of empathy or
38:49
because if she's stealing and she
38:51
doesn't care and so she loses
38:53
jobs, loses her scholarship, loses her
38:56
athleticism, scholarship, everything.
38:59
And so leper doesn't change
39:02
its spots without
39:04
a humongous miracle. And
39:06
not that I don't believe in
39:09
miracles, but it's
39:11
really about the intent of the heart,
39:13
you know, and I think her intent
39:15
was very narcissistic. She suffered
39:17
these consequences of stealing shit from people
39:19
at school, you know, like you said,
39:21
lost her scholarship, lost her chance to
39:23
finish her degree, be on the soccer
39:25
team, do all this. And
39:27
then she gets this job at Lulu lemon
39:29
and she's doing the fucking same shit again.
39:32
And then she is. Yeah.
39:34
So jealous of Jana because she
39:36
is everything. She is knocking everything
39:38
that is lands on her hands
39:40
out of the park. Like she
39:43
is going to school and like
39:45
her life is on the right track and
39:48
the manager girl, she's
39:50
Lulu lemon, but you got someone
39:52
like Brittany who's like, me, me,
39:55
me. It's gotta be about
39:57
me. I'm going to, I mean, how
39:59
do you not get along with someone
40:01
like. Jana, Jana sounds like something that
40:03
would be easy to get along with
40:05
and inspiring to be like. Right. Because
40:07
she, you hear what she gets done.
40:09
Yeah. And don't tell me
40:11
you didn't fucking plan it either. I don't
40:14
know for one second, because she had the
40:16
whole fucking ruse about the Metro pass. She
40:18
could have attacked Jana when they locked the
40:20
door initially. Yeah. Oh,
40:22
exactly. Exactly. And,
40:24
and, you know, instead of like making
40:27
this story about, you know, having to
40:29
go back and, oh, can you come
40:31
in the store and you know, all
40:33
of this. So I'm thinking like it
40:35
had to be planned. What I was just
40:37
dying to know, like what she's never with
40:39
what was there, but I mean, I could
40:41
say weird shit, but yeah, like if you're
40:44
using all the shit in the store and
40:46
it's at a point where, you know,
40:49
you can attack Jana and Jana can't
40:51
run away. I think you've probably like
40:53
looked at the shit in the store,
40:55
maybe briefly. Right. Yeah. Oh,
40:58
you know where to find stuff. Right. You
41:00
know, and fuck those Apple, I mean, God
41:02
bless them, but those Apple employees listening
41:05
to that shit. I have heard stuff and
41:07
I know when I, I mean, nothing to
41:09
where I've needed to call the police, but
41:11
I am an X 911 operator.
41:16
So I kind of know I got
41:18
a little edge and as a human being,
41:20
the edge of, I think someone's
41:22
fucking going to get hurt. Right. The
41:25
screaming is obviously get like
41:28
the screaming would have me something
41:30
like that might happen. Yeah.
41:33
And somebody's God, no, please no. I mean,
41:35
yeah, God, no, please no.
41:37
And then dead silence. That would make me
41:40
super suspicious. Like maybe them fighting, you know,
41:42
the screaming, like maybe that wouldn't necessarily like
41:44
like you said, like, I don't know if
41:46
I would feel like they were in danger.
41:49
Like, but then when the screaming
41:51
turned to somebody sounding like they're
41:53
begging for their life or
41:56
begging for something to stop, that would really
41:58
give me pause. right? Just be like, yeah,
42:01
you know, just do even a window check.
42:03
Like, just come out and take a look
42:05
because something is fucking a mess. Yeah. And
42:07
you know, they were all scared to leave.
42:10
Oh yeah, for sure. Or knock on the
42:12
wall. Hey, is everybody okay in there? If
42:14
you don't want to scared the shit out
42:16
of Brittany, right? I would have been like,
42:19
Hey guys. Yeah. I think
42:21
all the blood would have drained out of my
42:23
body. I know. Right. Oh, I
42:25
would just, wouldn't that bring you to out
42:28
of your mental, but God
42:31
bless Gina and her family, Brittany
42:33
and hers. I mean, her life
42:36
is gone. Her family sounds very
42:38
supportive as a big family. Right
42:40
now. I know everyone has these
42:42
stories. It's not just the victims.
42:45
Like it's just no lateral damage
42:47
of their families. And exactly, you
42:49
know, I think about, we did
42:51
that story about Jacob Wetterling a
42:54
few weeks ago. Yeah. About like
42:56
his parents actually stayed together. And
42:58
they, even though I think
43:00
they probably had a time where their marriage
43:02
hit like a rough patch, I can
43:05
only imagine the pain and suffering that they
43:07
went through and let alone every other family
43:09
who's had, you know, somebody, it
43:12
can be generational damage. Yes.
43:14
I just think about some of them, you
43:17
know, some of these people had chill, have
43:19
children and then their children grow up without
43:21
a parent or maybe like mom kills dad
43:23
or dad kills mom. And so now you
43:26
have no parents and it's just, it's terrible.
43:28
You're known as the, you know, all my
43:30
mom killed my dad or my vice versa
43:32
that. Oh yeah.
43:35
I know. It's just sad that,
43:37
you know, heavy as fuck too.
43:40
Just so how do you get
43:42
out from under there? But that's
43:44
like the riddle of life, you
43:46
know, exactly. Well, thank you Shannon
43:48
for the, thank you for bringing
43:50
this story. I'd never heard of
43:52
it. Yeah. This was a brutal
43:54
one. Like Jana really went through
43:56
it. I feel bad. I feel
43:58
really, yeah. I didn't
44:00
even see, how do you think in that
44:02
culture of Lululemon, you do not see that
44:04
kind of behavior coming? No, thanks, Sherri. You
44:06
know, it's quite upon you. Like
44:08
to just remind everyone to hit subscribe,
44:11
follow, whatever app you're listening to. Yes.
44:14

44:16
beginning, but that's okay. And if you
44:19

44:53
heart. I would just like to thank
44:55
everyone again and everyone seems
44:57
very welcoming to Shannon. Yes, guys, I

love you. And I love just spending
45:02

45:06
give me an opportunity to do both.
45:09
I love it. I know we get
45:12
to catch up before. I love it.
45:14
And bring Taro to the table and
45:16
some, I just love knowing like the
45:18
little bits of the story. What was
45:20
his sign? Oh, yeah. He's a Libra.
45:22
Whoa. We
45:24
love you, Libra. So, but until
45:26
next time, Tanya, you take care.
45:30
And I love you. You too. You
45:33
too. I'll see you next time. Bye.
