Definitely for adults, but the subject matter is at home in Noir's gritty genre. The voice acting and production values stand out here, drawing you into what you might expect from a detective story, but dealing with more modern themes. Dust off your fedora and settle in.
Lovely sound design is reminiscent of old-time radio drama, but Dash is '40's noir for the modern era - funny, self-aware, and more complex than it seems at first blush. I instantly fell in love with the title character and his unusual blend of incisiveness and naiveté. I'm excited to see where the mystery takes him!
Wonderful noir audio drama. Love the production on this along with the voice acting and mystery. Great stuff.
Enjoying the balance of juicy and wholesome feels I get from this story
Great voicework and production! A must for noir fans!
loved the storytelling style, the plot kept me hooked and the characters are engaging and loveable. can't wait for more!
charmingly camp, but still manages to stay fresh. I only wish it was modified a bit for the podcast medium because as far as I could tell, it followed the comic pretty much word-for-word. the sound design could be a bit clunky and the acting was sometimes too camp even for my liking. but the story is definitely intriguing, and I loved the queerified classic PI trope. very much hoping for season two, or at least more comics... would love to get more plink content somehow...
DASHFunny that you mention more Plink content...
"jokes" weren't funny. Acting was not good. Didn't like it. 🤷‍♂️
This review has been somewhat overtaken by events! I've just listened to the podcast (full disclosure: I haven't read the comic), and was going to comment on how a big selling point of the podcast is Dash's voice, courtesy of Peter Zielinski, who manages to infuse the lead character with a winning combination of youthfulness, toughness, and vulnerability. It's definitely noir, but stays away from the 'world-weary, seen it all' type protagonist and leans more into someone making his way in a hostile way. That's still accurate for season 1, but in season 2, Dash has a new voice actor. That's not a criticism of the new actor, but unsurprisingly, there's a noticeable difference between the two, and it'll take time for the new sound to bed in. As it is, listen to this if you fancy an entertaining yarn. It's perhaps little more Indiana Jones than Sam Spade, but that's not a bad thing. Enjoy!
I loved this so much! The format was so fun as was the lingo from the era and the way the actors captured the nuances of speech. The theme of the show is something that is so relevant today, and brings to awareness all of the many years that lgbtq people have had to hide who they are and who they love. I have 5 children, two of whom have already come out to me, and I am so grateful that they live in these times rather than back then or even 20 Years ago. It may not be perfect yet, but thanks to people like you in the entertainment industry who are striving to normalize the fact that everyone deserves love and deserves to be loved, it will only continue to get better. Please bring us a season 2!
