1:25

as promised, the triple threat of Decimal

1:27

Geek. You gotta love it. Rockin'

1:29

Pod recaps coming your way all

1:31

week long. Today, we bring you

1:34

the interviews. Chris Sinsack and myself,

1:36

we had the opportunity to sit

1:38

down and talk to some awesome

1:40

people during Rockin' Pod. I

1:42

know you had fun, you never got to do it before. Me

1:45

neither. Yeah, cause I felt like a completely

1:47

new event for me. Yeah, I didn't get

1:49

to ever do it before either, but man,

1:51

turns out we're pretty good at it. Yeah,

1:54

I was actually very happy with what

1:56

we got out of the whole experience

1:58

and yeah some very I think pretty

2:00

high -quality content some great stories coming

2:03

your way Yep, so you're gonna hear

2:05

us talking to our favorite comedian

2:07

Courtney Cronin and then we're going to

2:09

talk to Chris Cale and Craig

2:11

Gast. They're going to tell us all

2:13

about their Beardo and the Weirdo

2:15

podcast and a bunch of other cool

2:18

stuff. And then we're going to

2:20

talk to Jimmy Wheeler from the Tennessee

2:22

Entertainment Commission. Some pretty interesting stuff

2:24

there, especially if you live in the

2:26

state of Tennessee. You're going to

2:28

want to pay special extra close attention

2:30

to that if you are involved

2:32

in entertainment in any way. And then

2:35

We're going to talk to Joel Ellis from

2:37

Cats and Boots and Heavy Bones and

2:39

Mary Hoax. And he's got some cool stuff

2:41

in the works coming up real soon.

2:44

We talked to him about Cats and Boots

2:46

and all that good stuff. He's

2:48

a trip. You're going to like that

2:50

a lot. And then finally, we're going

2:52

to wrap it up with the one and

2:54

only internet sensation and one hell of

2:56

a cool dude, Joey Bro. So

2:58

what do you think about that? It's

3:01

a pretty diverse cast of characters that

3:03

we talk to over the throughout the day.

3:06

And yeah, I think we got great stuff. I think

3:08

you're going to like all these interviews and hope

3:10

you enjoy them. It

3:14

feels good to be at Rocketpot

3:16

and just be able to hang

3:18

out and relax and talk to

3:20

our friends. This is rare. We

3:23

haven't really got to do this

3:25

before. So we're going to kick

3:27

things off today with our favorite

3:30

Courtney Cronin. Oh my god. Hi you guys. I

3:32

know you're usually like so running around like

3:34

maniacs. It feels very weird to be sitting in

3:36

one place. is so weird to see you

3:38

in a chair. It's just very

3:40

weird. Yeah, I keep thinking that

3:42

I'm forgetting something. Don't

3:44

worry about that, because we have forgotten plenty. This

3:46

is the first time we're recording, so we didn't

3:48

bring none of this stuff with us that we

3:50

should have, and now we're scrambling, and all our

3:53

podcaster friends are helping us out. Yeah, this episode

3:55

to you by... So we can actually do what

3:57

we're supposed to do. This episode brought to you

3:59

by ages of rock. Oh,

4:01

nice. Nice. Oh,

4:03

boy. Thank you, Alan Tate, forgot. That's a

4:05

new low if you need Alan. Oh, no. Him

4:08

and Andy together have bailed us out

4:10

so many times. Alan and his dad

4:12

jokes coming to the rescue. But

4:14

yeah, so Courtney. Yes. How's

4:17

life in the comedy world right now? know what?

4:19

It's okay. I'm like, you

4:21

know, sort of like winding things

4:23

down lately. I'm getting more behind the

4:25

screen. Are you? Well, I've always

4:27

been writing, but I'm like doing it

4:29

way more, hey. But

4:32

performing, I mean, I guess so, not

4:34

as much on the road as I

4:37

used to be, but I've been doing

4:39

monsters of rock and doing that and

4:41

doing punchlines and backlines and just did

4:43

the fourth monsters of rock cruise, couple

4:45

kiss events, stuff like that. This,

4:47

this is the stuff I love. We

4:51

saw you performing Gatlinburg last year.

4:53

Oh, that's right. That was really

4:55

fun. And Britt Lightning

4:57

from Vixen did our show, and she

4:59

was so good. She was so good.

5:01

We had her do it again on

5:03

the cruise. The Tyson Leslie jokes were

5:05

just fucking awesome. We all

5:07

had Tyson jokes. He

5:10

loves it. He has a good sense

5:12

of humor. does. But I'm like, what

5:14

was it Britt said? We

5:16

don't let Tyson speak while he's in

5:18

our presence. That's why all of his

5:20

Facebook posts are six paragraphs long Yeah,

5:22

I wrote that I Was like that's

5:24

why I spit but we I wrote

5:26

that same joke for him Yeah, where

5:28

he when he did the show where

5:31

he said I better go this sets

5:33

threatening to be longer than one of

5:35

my Facebook posts So he he did

5:37

the joke about himself the year before

5:39

so yeah, he's got a good sense

5:41

of humor Now with writing,

5:43

what show are you, you've told me

5:45

about a show you were writing for,

5:47

is that still on? Oh, the last

5:49

show I did was for Lifetime. It

5:51

was called Outrageous Love with Nimi Leeks

5:53

and then... it got moved to some

5:55

other network and literally you need a

5:57

treasure map and a magnifying glass to

5:59

find it now. But it was fun

6:01

and cute and funny. But you know

6:03

the industry has kind of taken a

6:05

dump this last year because of multiple

6:07

reasons. So people are kind of running

6:09

around freaking out like maniacs. So I'm

6:11

kind of starting like from a point

6:13

where you just got to make your

6:15

own work now instead of like getting

6:17

staffed on a show because they're using

6:19

AI more than you think. I mean

6:21

we used it on our show when

6:23

we had to send like cuts to

6:25

that. network yeah and usually the producers

6:28

would do the voiceover and just send

6:30

it and then we get notes but

6:32

we were using Nini Leaks AI voice

6:34

and actually it it it made less

6:36

notes because they could hear her and

6:38

at one point someone went actually the

6:40

AI is better than Nini we were

6:42

like oh shit that's wrong that she'll

6:44

kill you But

6:46

that was not true. Do you think

6:48

AI will affect the stand -up comedy market

6:50

way? I don't think so yet. I've tried

6:52

the jokes a few times, and they're

6:54

like, wah, wah. You know, it's

6:56

not. Comedy comes from your

6:58

heart and your soul, and you talk about

7:00

yourself and what's going on in your

7:03

world and your point of view, and no

7:05

computer can read your mind. Yeah. Right.

7:07

And same with music, too. Right. There's

7:09

a lot of AI music out there

7:11

right now, but it's not real. And when

7:13

you listen to something that's AI -created music,

7:15

music. you can kind of

7:17

tell it's got just that blandness to

7:19

it that isn't like a real

7:22

musician writing a song that means something

7:24

to him that takes a human

7:26

mind and you know art is something

7:28

that's created by humans whether it's

7:30

comedy or writing or It's the soul

7:32

being expressed. Right. AI doesn't

7:34

have a soul. No. Exactly. So it

7:36

doesn't work. No it doesn't work. There's

7:38

I mean immediately I just thought of

7:41

this line from the movie Valley Girl

7:43

where Nicholas Cage is like that music

7:45

you girls listen to is godless. You're

7:47

talking about the bubblegum pop. And

7:49

it's true. AI music is that's the real

7:51

work of the devil. Yeah. Well, I think

7:53

there's a lot of good that can come

7:55

from it in the business world. Sure. It

7:58

does help with shortcuts. Sure.

8:01

But anything in the arts, I think,

8:03

should be off limits to it. It's

8:06

just gonna replace so many jobs,

8:08

you know, it's already happening. It's already

8:10

happening in in television and and

8:12

you know in digital media and it's

8:14

already happening So, you know, it's

8:17

kind of a bummer, but scratch comedy

8:19

writing I was watching you I

8:21

was watching a podcast the other day

8:23

with Carol leafer. Oh my god.

8:25

She's my favorite comedian. Yeah, she is

8:27

one of my reasons for starting

8:29

stand -up. She's amazing. She telling her

8:31

story about how she was trying to

8:33

be gung -ho about just doing stand

8:36

-up for the longest time. And

8:38

then finally somebody offered her a

8:40

sitcom writing gig. And she

8:42

was almost offended by it at first because she's like,

8:44

I'm a performer. I'm not a writer. But

8:47

her father told her, you've got

8:49

these dreams. You might be

8:51

just talented enough to make that your

8:53

living and you can still do stand

8:55

-up and that was the best decision

8:57

she ever made. She produces like game

8:59

shows and competition shows. I've worked. In

9:01

the same office with her, I was

9:03

doing a pilot at NBC, and

9:05

we were sharing the floor with

9:07

Henry Winkler's show, where all the older

9:09

people went and traveled around the

9:11

world together. And she was

9:13

like one of the executive producers on that.

9:15

So her office was right across from mine,

9:18

and I'm like, oh my god, I can't

9:20

wait for Carol Liefer to get here. I

9:22

can't wait to talk to her. And of

9:24

course, I got upstaged by my boss. And

9:26

I worked with all the guys who worked

9:28

on punked. So they all came in, and

9:30

they're like, hey, Carol. And I'm like, get

9:32

out of here. I want to talk to

9:34

her. But I told her, I said, you

9:36

know, I'm a comic and you've always been

9:38

my favorite. And I'm totally inspired by you.

9:40

And I've seen all your specials, everything. Everything

9:42

I can get my hands on. And she

9:44

starts going like this. She started dancing. And

9:46

she goes, keep going. She starts

9:48

snapping her fingers. That sounds like her.

9:50

mean, so funny, even in the hallway. Yeah.

9:53

Well, some of my favorite Seinfeld

9:55

episodes are ones that she wrote. Okay,

9:58

I mean, she was his girlfriend. Elaine

10:01

is based on her. Oh, yeah.

10:03

Elaine is based on Carol Liefer.

10:05

Yeah. Yeah. And they, I mean,

10:07

she's married to a woman now, but at the

10:09

time. You know, when you're new,

10:11

all the comics date each other. It is

10:13

so ancestral. Then the longer you're in it,

10:15

you realize that's a terrible idea. That

10:18

just doesn't work. Well, then you have to

10:20

keep working with them. And it's like, well, this

10:22

is uncomfortable. Yeah. That's very awkward. That's

10:25

very awkward. But yeah, I was watching

10:27

a podcast with her. But you know, she's

10:29

just like, at first, I didn't want

10:31

to do it at all because I felt

10:33

like it was a demotion. Yeah. But

10:35

she's made an amazing career out of writing

10:37

all kinds of stuff, Manage. Oh, yeah.

10:39

Yeah. I've seen pictures of her house. Yeah.

10:42

I mean, I took them because I'm stalking

10:44

her. No. No,

10:47

she does well. Oh, yeah, I've seen

10:49

you lurking around in the alleyway. Yeah.

10:52

So what's been your favorite memories of

10:54

coming to this thing every year?

10:56

Oh, my God. Oh

10:58

my god, there's so many. I think I joked

11:00

about it last night. We're at the very first

11:02

one I was here. And

11:04

I remember I had one joke that I wanted

11:06

to tell, and

11:08

Gary Schaller cut me off before

11:11

the punchline. And I go, Gary,

11:13

you can't do that to comedy.

11:15

You can't cut the person off.

11:17

And the next thing I know,

11:19

there's a signed copy of Gene

11:22

Simmons' solo album from Gary. He

11:24

felt bad. He felt bad. And

11:26

he's such a nice guy, but I always

11:28

tell you Chris like I've been kind of

11:31

floating around in space like with my nerdy

11:33

music knowledge and loving all this stuff and

11:35

My friends I grew up with and stuff

11:37

are like you need to find people to

11:39

talk about this with and then I found

11:41

my planet. I always say I found my

11:43

my friends always said to me. Yeah. I

11:45

would be the guy with the Metal Edge

11:47

magazine going, oh, the bullet boys are coming

11:49

in May. And my friends would be like,

11:51

so? Right. Yeah. I'm like, how are you

11:54

not excited about that? I know. I still

11:56

go to a lot of shows by myself.

11:58

Because no one wants to go, like my husband

12:00

doesn't want to go unless it starts at nine.

12:03

I think he might go with me to Fawzi

12:05

in a couple weeks because it starts at nine.

12:07

Or I would find out who my friends liked

12:09

as bands. And I would be the guy that

12:11

would update me. I was doing the podcast before

12:13

there was a podcast. Yeah. Yeah, same

12:15

here. You know, that's true. New band that

12:17

you like, even like you got to try to

12:19

turn everybody onto it. We all

12:21

love enough's enough. I know we have

12:23

that in common. And you guys turned

12:26

me on to Anthony and to Tora

12:28

Tora. Oh, really? Yes. You're the one

12:30

who turned. me on to them and

12:32

I loved Torridor and Anthony is amazing

12:34

he's the best he's amazing and it's

12:36

it's the whole ecosystem of everything you

12:38

know when we started this show like

12:41

we're about to celebrate our 14 year

12:43

anniversary of that show and at the

12:45

time there wasn't really a whole lot

12:47

of podcasts I was like what's a

12:49

podcast you know and so I had

12:51

to have explained to me and then

12:53

you think back to like 14 years

12:56

ago And now, you know, rock and

12:58

pot all the years that we've been

13:00

doing this, and it's the whole rock

13:02

and roll ecosystem that is pulled in

13:04

comedians, and, you know, just artists from

13:06

different genres and stuff that are involved

13:08

in this thing, and it's just

13:11

so beautiful, and I love it so much.

13:13

I love seeing how it's grown. I don't

13:15

think any of us expected it to turn

13:17

into this, though, from that first year. I

13:19

don't know that first year was so fun.

13:21

It was kind of a love fest and

13:23

everybody just meeting each other for the first

13:25

time in person was really special and you

13:28

know Ken Mills is also a big part

13:30

of this and I'm very bummed that he

13:32

was unable to make it again but you

13:34

know that first year like He and Gary

13:36

were on a podcast together for 10 years

13:38

and had never met in person. That was

13:40

one of my favorite moments of everything we've

13:42

ever done. cool thing to see. We'll see

13:44

those two meet each other. That was awesome,

13:46

you know. And seeing the guys from Heavy

13:48

Metal Parking lot meet each other. Oh yeah,

13:50

that was cool too. I've never seen that

13:52

movie. Oh man. And they're all gone now.

13:54

Like both guys are going to have to

13:56

along. I know, I know. The director's still

13:58

alive. I still talk to him once in

14:00

a while. Yeah, he

14:02

told me not long ago.

14:05

He's like after Johnny passed

14:07

away, DC 101 guy. After

14:09

he passed away, he was

14:11

like, you should be happy that

14:13

you put us all in the same room

14:15

again. He's like, because that was hard to

14:17

pull off. And that guy

14:19

in particular was the hardest one

14:21

to find. But where else were rockin'

14:23

high? god, Hal Sparks. It's Hal

14:25

Sparks. It's

14:29

the I Love the 80s guide.

14:31

I know it's the I Love

14:33

the 80s guide. You know what

14:35

was another fun memory is when

14:37

you guys came up with the

14:40

idea to do the talking along

14:42

to Phantom and then we did

14:44

Kiss Exposed. Those were two

14:46

of the most fun things I've ever

14:48

done in my entire life. Well I was

14:50

because the way I viewed it what

14:52

used to be was it Mystery Theater? Mystery

14:54

Theater. It became Rift Racks. They never

14:56

did any Kiss Stuff, so I'd always wanted

14:58

them to do it. So then when

15:01

I saw you and them were coming, I'm

15:03

like, well, I have comedians. Yeah. Let's

15:05

try to do this, and it was great.

15:07

Yeah, and we got Don and Craig,

15:09

and then Phil Schaus did it with us.

15:11

Yeah. And Phil and I watched it

15:13

together on Zoom. I wish I could have

15:15

listened to that comment there. And wrote

15:18

stuff down, because as a writer, I got

15:20

to write stuff down. Craig is very

15:22

off the cuff. Don's really good off the

15:24

cuff. I'm not great like that. I

15:26

like to write stuff, which I'm glad I

15:28

did. And then who did we had

15:30

like Ralph and Ian come and sort of

15:33

swap off for exposed? Whoa,

15:35

they got down and dirt it. Yeah, I

15:37

remember thinking Courtney's going to kill you

15:39

Ian. Honestly,

15:43

if I didn't love them so much,

15:45

I probably would have strangled Ian. And

15:47

that whole debt, the whole day leading

15:49

up to it, I think I got

15:51

at least two texts from you, maybe

15:53

three saying, don't let Ian drink too much.

15:56

I did. I did. I

15:58

say that to other people on my

16:00

shows. I won't say who, but I'm

16:02

like, no beers before the show. You

16:04

can have 50 after the show. No

16:06

beers before the show. Have

16:09

you ever gotten hammered at one of these? I've

16:14

never seen you drunk. No. Very

16:16

business. I'm very business. And I

16:18

don't like to drink before the

16:20

show. I'm going to get so

16:22

drunk it's obscene after our second

16:24

show Sunday night. I'm

16:27

probably gonna pass out on Broadway. But,

16:29

you know, I'll blend in. Are you

16:32

in town on Monday? I

16:34

am, I'm here all day. You should come

16:36

to Aaron's. Oh, okay. Are you doing

16:38

your backyard? Doing a barbecue. OK. I

16:40

would love to come. Yeah, we'd love to

16:42

have you. Our recovery day. Yeah, I'm going to

16:44

need some Bloody Mirror. I think Sunday I

16:46

might. Oh, you know what? Never mind. I can't.

16:48

I'm driving. That's the other thing.

16:50

I'm always driving here. Yeah. So I can

16:52

never really get bomb. But I had two

16:54

rosés at my hotel last night. I

16:56

thought that I earned. Huh?

16:58

Say at the Alexis Inn again. I'm staying at

17:01

the Alexis murder, rape, and sweets. No, I'm not

17:03

ever staying there again. I think we branded. It's

17:05

the scariest, most awful place

17:07

ever. No, I'm staying at the

17:10

Moxie over by Vanderbilt night. We stayed

17:12

there last year. Oh my god, it's awesome.

17:14

Yeah, it's cheap, too. Very reasonable, and

17:16

it's a nice place. I

17:19

totally dig it. We should get them as a

17:21

sponsor year. And no interesting characters in the lobby. No,

17:24

everyone was totally normal. It wasn't like the

17:26

Alexis where a lady brought two fans from her

17:28

house because she was afraid they weren't going

17:30

to have air. She's like, I

17:32

brought my own fans. In fairness,

17:34

she's probably right. But maybe. Maybe she stayed

17:36

there before. She must have. Oh, my

17:38

God. I had to get out of there.

17:40

I just had to get out. I

17:42

hated it so much. I shared a room

17:44

with Craig Gas for two days. You

17:46

did. That's how badly I needed to get

17:48

out of there. And I don't know

17:50

if you've ever seen Craig's hotel room, but

17:52

he literally checks into his room, takes

17:55

his suitcase, and just says, fuck it, and

17:57

throws it everywhere. And there's

17:59

like 52 waters from Starbucks all over

18:01

the room, like he's the little

18:03

girl from signs, leaving cups of

18:05

water everywhere in case the aliens come

18:07

to the house. And then

18:09

hang on, I can only make fun

18:11

of him for that because I do

18:13

the same thing. My bomb goes off

18:15

and he's wearing my clothes and I'm

18:17

wearing his hats. It's a

18:19

mess. And

18:21

then it's hilarious. We're each in our own beds.

18:24

I'm on the phone with my husband and he's

18:26

on the phone with his girlfriend. And

18:28

we're like, good night. And they're like,

18:30

those two are fine. They've been doing

18:32

this for 25 years. Yeah, you and

18:34

Craig have a very different relationship than

18:36

most people. Oh, we have a brother

18:38

-sister. I love you, but

18:40

I'm going to kill you relationship. We

18:42

really do. a true brother -sister. You really

18:45

are like siblings. We are. Yeah. But

18:48

see, he's not your sibling, so. No.

18:51

No, he's not. But he's really, really

18:53

crazy funny. I mean, he makes me

18:55

laugh. really hard. He's an awesome comedian. He's

18:58

very funny. have to get a Gene

19:00

Simmons liner from him today. Oh, he'll give

19:02

it to you. He'll give it to

19:04

you. I don't have any material because I

19:06

have to save it all for Sunday now that we have

19:08

two shows. But

19:11

I guess talking about Tyson Leslie,

19:13

I had one joke. I was talking

19:15

about Michael Monroe, who was just

19:17

so amazing on the cruise. And

19:19

I was like, we have Michael to thank or

19:21

to blame for our taste in music. And

19:25

I said, he's just so amazing. He's

19:27

just running around, doing 100 things, doing

19:29

the splits, playing the saxophone, singing, playing

19:31

guitar, playing the harmonica. I said, he's

19:33

the Tyson Leslie of Finland. And

19:38

what's awesome is everybody got

19:40

it. Everyone

19:42

got it. Well, Tyson is

19:44

everywhere. He's the darling of

19:46

everything. Yes. Yeah, if

19:49

there's a show that requires more than

19:51

10 musicians, he's involved in some way.

19:53

Well, I put on his Facebook last

19:55

night, after his extremely long post, I

19:57

put, I said, nobody played

19:59

bass and keys at the same time,

20:02

so you were missed. Yeah, I've seen

20:04

him do that. It's nuts. Well,

20:06

and he's so awesome that, like,

20:09

anytime... seen a band like when

20:11

we've seen Fast Pushcat at the

20:13

Mountain Monster Party. Oh, yeah. And

20:15

then Tyson's all like, oh, this is

20:18

to be really good because he just adds

20:20

so much to what anybody's doing up

20:22

there. He does. He played with, I think,

20:24

four or five bands on the Monster's

20:26

cruise. I believe it. He was never not

20:28

on stage. Yeah, I think I commented.

20:30

I said, did you schedule time to take

20:32

a piss? Yeah, no, it's truthfully. It's

20:34

like man. Truthfully. But he

20:36

loves doing it. the

20:39

thing that I think the door is

20:41

open for him because he loves all this

20:43

music he does musician trying to make

20:46

a buck he actually gives a shit he

20:48

really cares no it's true and it's

20:50

funny like Tyson and I connect because we're

20:52

always a wreck before our shows and

20:54

we're always running around like and everything goes

20:56

fine everything's fine But we're always like

20:58

that, so we kind of connect like that,

21:01

because we care. But I have

21:03

one thing to tell you guys from the cruise. There's some

21:05

things I just realized I kind of want to tell

21:07

you, but not on the air. But

21:09

one thing that happened, Chris

21:11

Holmes, who should totally come

21:13

here? Oh, I wanted to get him

21:15

here. I have never Met

21:17

or seen a more entertaining person in my

21:19

life and and the great thing I

21:21

connected with his wife. She was so cool

21:23

We really hit it off like we

21:26

exchanged numbers. She's like I'm gonna hang out

21:28

with you in LA I'm like I

21:30

want Chris to have his own show and

21:32

then I guess they're doing a documentary

21:34

about him but he you know, he's deaf

21:36

because his music is quite loud and

21:38

He's a very large fellow. He's really tall

21:40

very grand presence when he comes in

21:43

the room. You're like there's Chris Holmes and

21:46

and he came into the dining room, and I'm

21:48

not name dropping, I'm just telling you who I

21:50

was sitting with. I was sitting with Todd LaTorre,

21:52

because he also did our show cruise. No name

21:54

drop, we need it for the content. Okay, so

21:56

I was sitting with Todd LaTorre, and... And

21:59

we were in the artist's restaurant, which is

22:01

like the small restaurant on that ship. And

22:03

then the rest of Queen's Rite was kind

22:05

of scattered throughout the room. They all had

22:07

their own tables. And

22:09

Chris comes in with his wife,

22:11

and she's French. Catherine, she's very

22:13

sweet and very lovely. And she's

22:15

talking to Todd. She's like, we just had such a

22:17

lovely time with you last night. It was so nice. And

22:20

so we'll see you later. We

22:22

would love to hang out. And it'd

22:24

be so nice. And then Chris

22:26

puts his hand on her shoulder. And

22:28

you think he's going to go,

22:30

yeah, it was so much fun. puts

22:32

his hand on her shoulder and

22:34

at the top of his fucking lungs

22:36

he goes I gotta go take

22:38

a shit. I'll be right back And

22:40

then just leaves and everyone in

22:42

the you know like when the meerkats

22:44

like see a predator and they're

22:46

like Everyone in the room was like

22:48

what just happened Dying

22:50

laughing. That's Chris Holmes in a

22:52

nutshell. Dying laughing. Then I

22:54

leave and he's like 15 minutes later and

22:56

he's in the hallway by the elevator between the

22:58

bathroom and the restaurant talking to fans. And

23:01

I'm like is he on his way there or on his

23:03

way back? I kind of need to

23:05

know because I'm like you guys. He's

23:07

on a mission. Did

23:09

he have his jacket on with the

23:12

big middle finger in the middle? No,

23:14

he had it tanked up on in

23:16

shorts and he and Jeff Keith from

23:18

Tesla were singing karaoke together like two

23:20

best friends. Wow, that's cool. You

23:22

know like like in high school like

23:24

staying out late because their parents are out

23:26

of town. It was actually adorable. I'm

23:28

gonna use the word adorable. Yeah, they sing

23:30

keep on rockin' in the free world.

23:32

I didn't think I would ever hear it.

23:34

the phrase Chris Holmes and adorable in

23:36

the same sentence. But they were they were

23:38

pretty cute. Well, our show ended at

23:40

10. I know we got to go. Sorry.

23:43

Our show ended at 10. But and

23:45

the artist party was supposed to start at

23:47

10 30. So everybody kind of got

23:49

out of the room at like 10 0

23:51

5 because we had to switch rooms

23:53

because we needed a bigger room because everyone

23:55

wanted to come see Britt and Todd.

23:57

So so at 10 0 5 like 10

23:59

0 7 Sebastian Bach comes sauntering into

24:01

the room with his glass of Cabernet and

24:03

he's like all right. Party! And

24:05

then he stops and looks around because

24:07

there's no one in there except me, Don,

24:10

and Jim, and Izzy. And he's looking

24:12

around, and they're like, Sebastian, the party starts

24:14

at 10 .30. And he's like, oh, OK.

24:17

Temper your expectations. He

24:19

thought no one was at the party. Wow.

24:23

Although he is the guy that he's the last

24:25

guy at the party that doesn't want to go

24:27

home. Oh, he wouldn't get off the stage. He

24:29

was doing karaoke. He was doing journey. And

24:32

I love rock and roll, and he didn't

24:34

want to stop. So Brian just pulled the plug

24:36

on him, the karaoke guy. He's so funny.

24:38

I do love that he's genuinely a fan of

24:40

the music. He was fun. It

24:42

was fun. He still hates Aaron and

24:44

me. Oh, does he? a

24:47

tough customer. He hates us

24:49

for something that Michael Wagner said on our

24:51

show. So it's our fault. And

24:54

actually, Michael was much nicer than he

24:56

could have been. Yeah, no. I

24:58

did a joke about him on the Kiss Cruise,

25:00

and at Todd Kern's birthday, Craig's like, hey, Sebastian,

25:02

Courtney's a big fan. She did a joke about

25:04

you on the cruise, and I'm like, are you kidding

25:06

me? I was going to kill him. I didn't

25:08

know if he would think it's funny not. never

25:10

know with him. What was that joke, Courtney? It

25:12

was very flattering, because he wasn't able to make

25:14

it. And I said, I'm so bummed. Sebastian's not here.

25:16

He's one of my favorite singers. He's

25:19

such an incredible singer. He is so

25:21

metal that he gave himself a hernia. I

25:23

go, you guys got your hernias from trying

25:26

to take a shit. But not

25:28

Sebastian. So he loved

25:30

it. And he goes, that's actually what my

25:32

voice coach said. He said it's just like

25:34

taking a shit. Wow. And

25:36

I was like, I thought that cab was

25:38

going in my face. I was scared. But

25:40

he was so nice to me. He was

25:42

so nice. That's cool. Yeah. And him and

25:44

Chris Holmes have something in common, so. Taking

25:48

a shit. Taking a shit. Oh

25:51

my god. Yeah, and they were BFF

25:53

too on the cruise. So go ahead, plug

25:55

your socials and whatever you want plug.

25:57

Courtney Cronin comedy. There's literally nothing there. socials

25:59

are all my dog and whales. but

26:01

I have some stuff coming up You never

26:03

know I might pop up somewhere probably

26:05

at the mountain again this summer. Well, we'll

26:08

see you there again Yeah. you guys.

26:10

Love you too. Awesome. us updated on everything.

26:12

We'll let everybody know what you got

26:14

going on We love you Courtney. love you.

26:17

I love you guys. I'm gonna cry. I

26:19

am too. Running

26:30

down the sides There

26:32

was a flavor you could

26:34

not smell In

26:36

every hole here there was

26:38

a prayer The heart would

26:40

cover for a refugee And

26:43

by the color down of

26:45

your hair Down of your

26:47

hair It's

26:51

all alright

26:54

We're all

26:56

alright It's

26:59

all alright

27:01

We're all

27:04

alright Oh

27:10

good Hello

27:13

Oh, beautiful. Hello,

27:16

hello, hello. So we're at Rockin' Pod

27:18

with and the Weirdo. That's right.

27:21

And Beardo is pretty obvious Chris Cale

27:23

from Five Finger Death Launch This

27:25

isn't a weirdo. And real Rockstar. Fred

27:27

Gass, who I've always called a

27:29

weirdo So it makes a lot of

27:31

sense Very much a weirdo So

27:34

you just couldn't stand Josh Toomey being the

27:36

only one of your clique in the world Exactly.

27:38

We both kind of started the same podcast

27:40

at about the same time It's good

27:42

to have him. A couple of big people.

27:44

just trying to keep our minds going you know.

27:46

you grow up with Josh? I I did.

27:48

Yeah, I actually replaced Josh in a band called

27:50

12 Volt Negative Births day. right I used

27:52

to go watch them play live Oh, yeah. Yeah.

27:54

I played many places. I think the very

27:56

first spot we played here was I

27:59

feel like it was so record store. Lucy's?

28:01

Hmm. This would have been

28:03

God 2001. We had

28:05

Lucy's record shop that he's put on shows

28:07

there. I played there, too. Very cool. Yeah.

28:09

Yeah. Oh, such a great show. That's great.

28:12

Yeah, we used to trade shows. I

28:14

was in bands in Lexington, Kentucky. Yeah, we

28:16

come up and play Lexington. We would come down

28:18

and play. Now, so how does Beardo and

28:20

weirdo meet? Well, we

28:22

actually finder. I

28:24

mean, a couple great apps

28:26

there. We actually met

28:28

years ago. A friend of

28:31

mine, Jason. I knew when he

28:33

was playing with Vince Neil, he said,

28:35

I'm in this new band called Five Finger Death Punch.

28:37

You got to come out to a show. And the

28:39

first show I went out to, Jason introduced me to

28:41

the whole band. Chris and I, like,

28:43

hey, nice to meet you, whatever. And

28:45

then a few years later, Five Finger Death

28:47

Punch and myself were all in the

28:49

same town of Portland, Maine. Chris and I

28:51

ended up hanging out at a Buffalo

28:53

Wild Wings for Monday Night Football. And we

28:55

bonded, like, intensely. But

28:57

years later, I was just telling

29:00

somebody else about... it really got

29:02

intense when I realized that Chris

29:04

was struggling with drug addiction and

29:06

going into recovery. I've been sober

29:08

for 20 years now. Chris

29:10

sober for a few years. So we

29:12

started bonding over that and just started spending

29:15

more time hanging out and talking to

29:17

each other. And we thought, you know what,

29:19

let's do this, make it into a

29:21

podcast. And we only have 10 episodes out.

29:23

Yeah, you're pretty new. In 10 episodes,

29:25

Chris's girlfriend dumped him. My girlfriend

29:27

dumped me. Wow, he cried

29:29

at least once. Oh, yeah. I'm

29:32

very sensitive. Looking like this, you wouldn't think

29:34

it, but yes, very, sensitive. So

29:36

you're saying you found each other. And Bert

29:38

Kreischer did an intervention of a 15 -year

29:40

-old kid who has not even had a

29:42

drop of alcohol and warned him of

29:44

the dangers of alcohol. It is already in

29:46

10 episodes. We've had shit go on.

29:49

The whole point of it was like, let's

29:51

get together and just laugh. Yeah. But

29:53

life has gotten in the way. And we're

29:55

not doing very well right now because...

29:57

All that stuff is pretty cool, but you're

29:59

glossing over, we have an episode about

30:01

throbbing horse cock. Oh yeah! No shit. Wow,

30:03

you know what? That's a great point. Yeah,

30:07

we actually have two episodes dedicated to horse cock.

30:09

I didn't even think about that. We actually

30:11

have the horse cock guy on our show. You

30:13

can take the boy out of Kentucky. You

30:15

can't take the Kentucky out of the boy. There's

30:18

a legendary onstage rant by a

30:20

hardcore band where this guy went on

30:22

to... He gave this speech about

30:24

how tough his first job was. And

30:26

he was like, when I was

30:28

15 years old, I had the worst

30:30

job in the world. He was

30:32

like, yeah, yeah. And he goes, I

30:35

used to work on a ranch

30:37

where I had to jerk off horses.

30:39

What? And then he goes to

30:41

this whole thing about I had to

30:43

walk down through this farm. And

30:45

I would go into this barn where

30:47

I was surrounded by enormous horse

30:49

cocks. And I had to jack off

30:51

the horses. Found out. I'm only

30:53

getting four dollars an hour and they're

30:56

getting a million dollars a jar. There's

30:59

three types of people. I already know

31:01

this whole speech. There's three types of

31:03

people in this world. There's the man

31:05

who owns the horse. There's the man who

31:07

buys the horse. And then

31:09

there's you, me, you, you,

31:11

we. Jack off the horses. Doodoo.

31:14

They start going into it. But you can

31:16

see a couple guys in the crowd going,

31:18

wait, what? What? What? I just love the

31:20

way everybody around us just looked over here

31:22

when you're saying that. Dude, yeah.

31:24

It's inspirational. I can't believe I

31:26

actually started with us crying, us going

31:28

through breakups, and Burt Christcher's intervention. And I

31:30

didn't even get to horse cock, but

31:32

you're right. 10 episodes. We got a lot

31:34

of horse cock, and we got a

31:36

little Burt Christcher intervention, and a

31:38

lot of crying and breakups. 20

31:40

% horse cock. Yeah, 20 % horse cock. Which, by

31:42

the way, that's a good amount of horse cock

31:45

to have with you to impress the ladies. 20

31:47

% horse cock is not bad. Even 5 % horse

31:49

cock would be enough to get a date. Bert

31:51

Kreischer leading an intervention is talking about

31:53

Fox and the Henhouse. Yeah. And

31:55

by the way, the intervention was

31:57

with Dave Buckner's son. Dave Buckner is

32:00

the original drummer for Papa Roach.

32:02

Oh, yeah. And we all went to

32:04

go hang out with Bert. And

32:06

then Bert? for some reason in the

32:08

middle of a vodka party sits

32:10

down Dave's son and says, hey,

32:12

you know that these are bad. If I

32:14

had to do it all over again, if

32:16

I was your age, I wouldn't do this

32:18

at all. And he started to give a

32:20

full blown intervention of Dave's kid. So we

32:22

had Dave's kid on the last episode that's

32:24

coming out next week. Oh, I can't wait

32:26

to watch he asked him, so it was

32:28

like, he smelled like alcohol. And he kept

32:30

telling me to not do it. And then

32:32

at the end of the speech, he goes,

32:35

All right, who wants to party tonight's young and

32:37

he like rounded up a bunch of people to

32:39

get wasted. If you haven't learned

32:41

anything yet, let's drink. Weirdo

32:44

and weirdo. That is the

32:46

new podcast from us. Comedian, Rockstar,

32:49

and two different lives, but somehow allegedly in

32:51

the same entertainment business. And is there

32:53

a plan for like particular theme shows, or

32:55

is it just anything goes whenever the

32:57

mics go This whole thing is basically. That

32:59

time that him and I met at

33:01

Buffalo Wildweed, we shared such great stories back

33:03

and forth. So we have

33:05

these unique lives that people are fascinated

33:08

about, and we're both great at telling

33:10

those stories. So we want to invite

33:12

people in to the conversations that we

33:14

normally have. Even now, it's affecting our

33:16

friendship, because we'll have something come up.

33:18

But hey, man, I'm going to tell

33:21

you, ah, we're saving that

33:23

for the podcast. We're going through

33:25

intense life shit, where I'll be like, how

33:27

come he didn't call, and he'll be

33:29

like, ah. I'll tell you when

33:31

we get into the studio. Yeah, right. You

33:33

know what he was he was going

33:35

through the the remnants of a breakup Chris

33:37

was and God had a bad day

33:39

when the ex tried to text him and

33:41

that's when my girlfriend broke up with

33:43

me and I said hey do I need

33:46

to talk to you need to talk

33:48

to you talk to you wouldn't pick up

33:50

his phone Yeah, and I was like

33:52

what I wanted to talk to him about

33:54

was I think I need to postpone

33:56

our recording because This fucking sucks.

33:59

And I'm still hurt by it. Even just now, I'm

34:01

just walking around. I went to the bathroom for

34:03

like three minutes. And while was in the bathroom, I'm

34:05

like, am I doing the right thing? And

34:08

so I go, all right, you know what? We'll just go

34:10

in the studio. He won't pick up his phone. I go

34:12

in the studio and I said, dude, when your friends call,

34:14

you need to pick up your phone. He goes, listen, you

34:16

got to understand what I was going through. And he started

34:18

telling me everything was going through. And I was like, you

34:20

got to pick up your phone, dude. You got to pick

34:22

up your phone. And he goes, well, just so you know,

34:24

I was having a bad day. And I go, all right.

34:26

Well, the reason why I was calling

34:29

is because while I was in Hawaii

34:31

My girlfriend broke up with me and

34:33

he went nah, and I go for

34:35

real and he goes nah And I

34:37

go for it and we went back

34:39

and forth with nah, uh, mm -hmm nah,

34:41

uh, mm -hmm Nah, mm -hmm 20 seconds

34:43

after that reveal because she's an artist.

34:45

She's a very popular tattoo artist She

34:47

actually designed our logo and after five

34:49

or six nah, uh, mm -hmm nah,

34:51

uh Mm -hmm, then Chris goes. Can we

34:53

still use the logo? That

34:57

went over my head until

34:59

I reviewed it for clips. I

35:01

went, God, what an asshole

35:03

this guy. Spoken like a

35:05

true podcast. I couldn't believe

35:07

it. I couldn't believe it. It was

35:09

so funny. I had to play it

35:11

back for him on the new episode.

35:13

Well, you realize that podcasting is much

35:15

cheaper than therapy. Yeah. And

35:18

a lot more fun. It was great

35:20

for that just sharing things back and forth.

35:22

Yeah, open it up about the things

35:24

that we're going through and we're really finding

35:26

some connection with other people out there.

35:28

Yeah, going through stuff. Listen to it on

35:30

their long drives and their cars and

35:32

whatnot. Yeah, it's kind of building a community.

35:34

Right. Especially with addiction, relationship

35:37

issues, horse

35:40

cocks. We honestly didn't

35:42

expect it to be like

35:44

the honest idea

35:46

was just to get together and

35:49

laugh. And we haven't laughed at

35:51

all yet. Except for the horse

35:53

cocks. And Burke Kreischer doing the intervention

35:55

and shit. And the only reason we laughed at

35:57

that is because somebody else has had it worse

35:59

than us, finally. That's

36:02

a great point. I may be single, but I'm

36:04

not jerking off horses. Chris, did you

36:06

grow up a comedy nerd? I

36:09

grew up watching a little bit

36:11

of comedy here and there, but really

36:13

during the pandemic. Sitting at home. Watching

36:16

other people do on podcasts like

36:18

Bert Kreischer, Tom Sibara, that Kool -Aid

36:20

episode was huge for me. Really, really

36:22

good. Genuine laughs.

36:24

I was going through a breakup back then,

36:26

too, actually. And I was like, this

36:28

sucks. This sucks. That

36:30

Kool -Aid episode a little bit. That's funny. I still remember

36:32

Chris telling me about it. He was like, have you seen

36:34

this yet? I came over to his house. He's

36:36

actually a great cook. And he was cooking me dinner.

36:38

And he said, I want to show you this Kool -Aid

36:40

thing. And I was watching going, get the fuck out of

36:42

here. And

36:44

it's weird because I introduced him to Burt, which

36:47

by the way is a whole other episode.

36:49

I'm sure it is. I introduced Chris to Burt

36:51

at the Super Bowl Media Center last year

36:53

in Las Vegas. And I know

36:55

that Chris loves Burt. So I said, hey,

36:57

Burt. I go, hey, man, this is my buddy Chris. He's

36:59

in a band called Five Finger Death Punch. And to

37:01

both of our surprise, he went, oh

37:03

my god, dude, my daughter. Dude,

37:05

Ayla is like your biggest fan. She went to

37:08

go see you guys at Los Angeles last year

37:10

when you opened for Metallica. And she listens to

37:12

you guys all the time. Oh my god, I

37:14

can't believe. She's going to freak out when she.

37:16

So I said, well, Bert, hey, we'll

37:18

come to your show. He set us up with

37:20

tickets and passes. And then Chris

37:22

brought guitar and the vest

37:24

he wore on stage. the night

37:26

that Isla saw him open

37:29

from the top. Oh, wow. Yeah.

37:31

And then when we saw him this last time, we were

37:33

getting ready to leave because we were like, oh, we're

37:35

tired. We're waiting for the meet and greet. Right

37:38

as we're getting ready to leave, Bert walks in the

37:40

other side and there's a huge crowd of people in between

37:42

where he walks in and where we're standing. So we're

37:44

all like, ah, we'll let him kind of get through that

37:46

crowd and then we'll go high. All of a sudden

37:48

I hear, oh my God. Oh my

37:50

God. Chris, get over here. Get

37:52

over here. I gotta tell him about

37:54

you. And he just tells everybody about the

37:56

impact that that simple act of me

37:58

giving her a guitar has really brought out

38:00

her personality, brought out some

38:02

creativity. She's falling in love with guitar. Oh, that's

38:04

great. Learning all different types of songs and whatnot. So

38:07

just little small gestures like that. Yeah.

38:09

Changing people's lives. And he gave me a

38:11

huge hug at the end. It was

38:13

very thankful. And it's very cool for someone

38:15

who entertained me during that pandemic. Yeah.

38:18

He didn't even know about that. I was

38:20

going through that breakup just in a

38:22

terrible spot. Watching that Kool -Aid

38:24

episode. Right in my day, I was

38:26

able to return that favor and brighten up

38:28

his daughter's day. That's great. I'm sure everybody

38:30

gives him gifts all the time. And

38:32

I was like, you know what? Isle was

38:34

real cool when we did the meet and

38:36

greet in Vegas. He's kind of organized everything.

38:38

He's like, I'm going to do something for

38:41

her. OK. Yeah, it paid off in dividends.

38:43

By the way, the video of all that

38:45

stuff is on the episode called Bert Kreischer's

38:47

Intervention. Oh, I'm totally going to watch that.

38:49

So you can see that online, on YouTube,

38:51

and then on all the platforms. But Beardo?

38:53

and weirdo. It started out as a fun

38:55

thing but none of us are having fun

38:57

yet. People are

38:59

having fun but at

39:01

our expense. Can

39:04

I ask you a silly question about

39:07

Five Finger real quick? So

39:09

you guys are kind of known

39:11

for taking old school songs and

39:13

updating them to modern metal sound. Just

39:16

got to wonder is there any bow nasty

39:18

songs that are you're planning on covering in

39:20

the future? I don't want to give away

39:22

any of that information That's that's gonna be

39:24

available on patreon guys, and if you haven't

39:26

figured it out bow nasty is our phrase

39:29

for the weekend I'm working bow nasty into

39:31

every conversation. I thought I was cool

39:33

and unhippen I want to hear five finger

39:35

death punch do a bow nasty song on

39:37

the next record Yeah, can you ask a

39:39

bow nasty question to Gene Simmons from kiss?

39:44

Gene How do

39:46

you feel about Bo Nasty and their influence on music? Here's

39:49

the great thing. A lot of

39:51

people steal from Kiss. You

39:53

know it. I know it. But the

39:55

way Bo Nasty does it, they

39:57

put their own spin on it. And

39:59

if you want to hear what

40:01

that sounds like, go to kissonline .com. Boom.

40:05

Now listen, people. Listen, people.

40:07

Now he's going to bring the Paul. Do

40:10

you see the people in the back, Paul? I

40:13

see them in the back. People,

40:15

listen here. Wait

40:18

hold on Paul. How much money have you got in

40:20

the back? Let's

40:24

not give it away Paul. Welcome

40:27

to Nashville and all surrounding areas.

40:30

You know that story about both.

40:32

I saw this is a

40:35

direct quote Paul Stanley on

40:37

stage performing Mohican Sun. Mohican

40:39

Sun is located in Uncusville

40:41

Connecticut. It's in between Boston,

40:43

New York Hartford Providence, but

40:45

it's just, it's in the

40:47

middle. It's not, it's just

40:49

Uncusville. Repeatedly throughout

40:51

that kiss show, Paul Stanley said,

40:53

all right, Uncusville and

40:55

the surrounding communities. Let

40:57

me hear ya. And

40:59

then he kept doing it over and over

41:01

again. And then at the very end

41:04

of the show, he said, Uncusville and the

41:06

surrounding communities, we love you. That

41:08

right there shows the difference between Paul

41:10

Stanley's professionalism and the bass player from Firefinger

41:12

Death Punch's professionalism. There was one night

41:14

we were playing a show and I always

41:16

do the intro for a song called

41:19

Got Your Six. And I'm back there getting

41:21

ready to go up and I'm like,

41:23

hold on. What city are we

41:25

in? had no idea. So I yelled at our

41:27

drum tech. I was like, hey Nate, what

41:29

city is this? His

41:31

response was, we've been here

41:33

three days, asshole. Well,

41:38

I had hung out I'd gone all

41:40

over the place and I could not remember

41:42

what the hell city out was in

41:44

so for Paul to recognize the city and

41:46

the surrounding Steven behind the music he

41:48

was like I kept doing screwing up I'd

41:50

be in Cleveland like hello Buffalo and

41:52

the finally I was like how the fuck

41:54

you doing? All

41:57

right, so can I get

41:59

a liner from Craig a liner

42:02

from Jean and a liner

42:04

43:15

episode of Decibel Geek ever.

43:19

I kept this episode in the

43:21

only place it would fit. In

43:24

my ass. I

43:26

yanked it out. Smells

43:28

like shit. But here it

43:30

is. I carried this uncomfortable episode of

43:32

my ass for 40 years. Your

43:35

grandfather wanted you to have

43:37

it. Enjoy death spooking. Pow!

43:41

What is up, guys? This is

43:44

Chris Cale from the Rock and

43:46

43:48

Also the co -host and handler

43:50

43:52

Ol' Weirdo podcast. You are listening

43:54

43:57

Nashville for the day. If not

43:59

for the weekend and all surrounding

44:01

areas as well. Here

44:03

with Decibel Geek. Thank you

44:05

sir. Thanks guys. I

44:08

know he's going to land the flamethrower. We

44:56

have to do a one o 'clock also, so

44:58

I want to make sure I fit these

45:00

in. So Jimmy Wheeler, and

45:02

give me the official title of

45:04

the you're with. Director of Business

45:06

Development for the Tennessee Entertainment Commission.

45:09

Right, and so I'm a Nashville

45:11

native, so I can't

45:13

believe where Nashville is compared to growing

45:15

up here in the 80s. It

45:17

was very small back then, and I

45:19

think our biggest TV star at

45:21

the time was Ernest. Probably was he

45:23

would do commercials for purity dairies.

45:25

Yeah, are you from Nash? I am.

45:27

Oh you are so you've seen

45:29

all the change right here. I've seen

45:31

it change You know from I

45:33

grew up here in the 70s and

45:35

80s and Yeah, it has become.

45:37

Oh, that's even cooler that you're the

45:39

guy running this so you you're

45:41

a native and you get it like

45:43

that's the big complain is Nashville

45:45

has changed so much, you know from

45:47

people from the outside and so

45:49

can you kind of give a nutshell

45:51

explanation of what the Tennessee Entertainment

45:53

Commission Yeah, so the Entertainment Commission

45:55

has been around for a while. We

45:58

are a division of the

46:00

Department of Economic and Community Development.

46:02

So for many, many years, they

46:05

focused largely on film. And

46:07

the reason being was

46:09

they wanted to get more

46:12

filmmakers to come to

46:14

the state. do

46:16

their movies, do their television shows. And

46:18

what film has become is a bunch of

46:20

incentives. It's very incentive -lated. So

46:22

all of the states compete to get whatever

46:24

film they can get based on the

46:26

incentives they have. And they

46:29

hired me two years ago to

46:31

head up the music side

46:33

of the Tennessee Entertainment Commission, which

46:35

hadn't existed until then. They

46:37

really didn't focus anything on music. We

46:40

do have... Late edition Aaron

46:42

Camaro, Jimmy Wheeler. We started

46:44

rolling, but we just got

46:46

going. We don't want to hear about this. So

46:49

he's a native Nashvillian, which

46:51

makes me even happier to hear

46:53

that. And so the Tennessee

46:55

Entertainment Commission hired me two years

46:57

ago to head up the

46:59

music side of the commission, which

47:01

hadn't been done before. So

47:04

I had a blank slate, basically. Because

47:08

we report to the Department of

47:10

Economic and Community Development, a

47:12

big part of our job

47:14

is to find jobs for

47:16

Tennesseans. So that's kind of

47:18

the linchpin in all of

47:20

this. But what I've done

47:23

is I work in three different

47:25

lanes. One is

47:27

hiring or getting companies to

47:29

move to the state

47:31

to hire Tennesseans. Best example

47:33

I can give you

47:35

guys today is we incentivized

47:37

a company to move

47:39

to Nashville and build a

47:41

rehearsal campus. It's called

47:44

Rock Nashville. It's going to

47:46

have 13 rehearsal studios. Really?

47:48

Yeah. Oh, that's cool. 13 rehearsal

47:50

studios of various sizes. So

47:52

any, you know, what would be for a

47:54

full band to a guy in a guitar or

47:56

a girl in a guitar. And

47:58

then they're going to have two

48:01

arena -sized rehearsal facilities. for, you know,

48:03

the big acts that have Pyro

48:05

and all sorts of arena size.

48:09

It's going to be fantastic. It's going to

48:12

open up in November of this year. But

48:14

they've been they've been going at

48:16

it building since. the fall of

48:19

last year. And it's going

48:21

to be amazing. So that's a

48:23

big example of how we convince companies

48:25

to move here and hire Tennesseans.

48:27

Because that's going to really be a

48:29

game changer for the touring industry

48:31

anyway. And if you think about Nashville.

48:33

the reason why it makes sense

48:35

in Nashville is because Nashville is so

48:37

centralized. And you can get to

48:39

60 % of the country from Nashville,

48:41

either by plane or by car, very

48:43

easily. And that's one of the

48:45

reasons why Nashville has become such a

48:47

tourist hub too, because it's so

48:49

easy get here. So the

48:51

other line that I work in

48:54

is helping communities around our state

48:56

use music as an economic development

48:58

tool. There are so many towns

49:00

and cities across the state that

49:02

have They have something in their

49:04

music ecosystem. They have a theater,

49:07

they have an outdoor stage, and

49:09

they're just not using it in

49:11

a way that really drives their

49:13

economy. So I go in and

49:15

help them do that through various

49:17

different things, right? And then the

49:20

last thing is kind of where

49:22

this place comes in, or this

49:24

convention comes into play, is I

49:26

help creative stay creative. throughout the

49:28

state through programs and initiatives. One

49:31

of those is I have

49:33

a music directory that is

49:35

here to map the entire

49:37

state's assets of our music,

49:39

our music assets basically. So

49:41

any kind of podcast, any

49:43

kind of artist, any kind

49:45

of record label, big,

49:47

small, independent, doesn't matter. I want you to

49:49

be part of our music directory. And

49:52

it's free to join. It takes about

49:54

10 minutes. You go to

49:56

TNEntertains .com and Click on

49:58

directory, and it pretty much

50:01

is self -explanatory. We also

50:03

have a job board, a job

50:05

board that's specific to creatives. And

50:07

it offers jobs for those folks

50:09

that need a second job. I

50:11

mean, being a creative, not

50:14

everybody is making a millions

50:16

of dollars doing their prep. There's

50:18

tens of thousands of people out

50:21

there that need a second gig.

50:24

so they can do what they

50:26

love. I just started ushering at

50:28

the Opry for a second job.

50:30

Yeah, right. So we have jobs

50:32

on our job board that are

50:34

one that are some of our

50:36

creative, you know, some of,

50:38

you know, you could go work for

50:40

a record label or go work for

50:42

someone else, or it has offers part -time

50:44

jobs that are flexible, that offer, you

50:46

know, if an artist wants to, they

50:49

need a second job, but they also need

50:51

to be able to go out of on

50:53

the road for five to six weeks. But

50:56

they want to be able to

50:58

come back to a decent paying job

51:00

that maybe offers health benefits. And

51:02

so that's kind of the other thing

51:05

is the job board is there to

51:07

help creatives find gigs that support them

51:09

in their everyday life, but also allow

51:11

them to go out on the road

51:13

when they can and come back and

51:15

they sell this job. That's not delivering

51:17

pizza or driving Uber. Nothing wrong with

51:19

those jobs, obviously. But

51:22

we want to find...

51:24

higher quality jobs

51:26

that these creatives can

51:28

do. And then the

51:30

last thing that we do as

51:32

far as helping creatives to create

51:34

it is through legislation. We

51:36

just passed a law that

51:38

defined what an independent artist or

51:40

what an independent venue is.

51:42

Oh really? Yeah. And

51:44

the reason why we did that is

51:47

so we could come alongside of that

51:49

and put in place some grant funding

51:51

that will allow independent artists and independent

51:53

venues apply for grant funding on a

51:55

regular basis. Yeah, I was going to

51:57

ask your thoughts on the live nation

51:59

situation. Yeah, you know, so

52:01

it's, well, the independent

52:03

venue is the lifeblood of

52:05

the industry, right? 100%. And if

52:07

it wasn't for independent artists

52:10

and independent venues, there wouldn't be

52:12

a live nation, right? True.

52:14

And so to that point, our

52:17

independent fund Independent

52:19

Artist and Venue Fund is there

52:21

for artists and venues to apply for

52:23

grant funding on a regular basis. And

52:26

we've defined who those are. If

52:28

you're an independent artist, you've been around

52:30

for a couple years. You've

52:32

released two or three things

52:34

of music. If you're an

52:36

independent venue, you do four

52:39

or five nights a week

52:41

on shows. It's not just

52:43

for anybody. It's for real

52:45

independent artists and venues. And

52:51

it's not funded yet, so that's

52:53

the key, is we have to

52:55

get money put into the fund.

52:57

Now, we're working

52:59

with the government

53:01

and the governor

53:03

to put money

53:06

into his budget. We

53:09

haven't been able to do that yet. It's

53:11

not that he's not for it, it's just

53:13

some things come in front of that. But

53:15

we also can get private funding. And that's

53:17

where somebody like Live Nation could come in.

53:19

Live Nation, it would, one, it would be

53:21

a great PR move on their part

53:23

if they helped fund an independent brand. They

53:26

need some good PR right now. And

53:28

also it makes sense for them because

53:30

the artists that are playing these independent venues

53:32

will eventually make it to where they're

53:34

playing Nation. So

53:36

those are the things that we're doing

53:38

around the state to really kind

53:41

of help not just you know, Nashville,

53:43

right? I mean, Nashville's got its own

53:45

set of issues. But we've got

53:48

to help the whole state. We

53:50

are a music state from Memphis

53:52

and Bill Street to Bristol and

53:54

the birthplace of country music, right?

53:56

And everything in between. And

53:59

one of the things that I've

54:01

learned in my time with the state

54:03

is as I go around the

54:05

state, everybody looks at Nashville as like,

54:07

well, at Nashville gets everything. Right.

54:09

Yeah. National is the favorite child of

54:11

the state. Didn't used to be

54:13

that way. Right. Right. And

54:16

so, you know, I want to

54:18

make sure that we're taking care of

54:20

the Memphis's. Yeah. The Jackson's and

54:22

the Chattanooga's and the Knoxville's and the

54:24

Northeast Tennessee. It's not just about

54:26

national. Now, I'm going to help Nashville

54:28

in ways that they need help.

54:30

Right. But other other areas of the

54:32

state need help just figuring out

54:34

what they can do with their music.

54:37

with their music industry. It doesn't have

54:39

to be this big thing. That's

54:41

the great thing about music. Two things

54:44

about music. One, it knows

54:46

no boundaries. It crosses all

54:48

the aisles. Democrat, Republican. It unites

54:50

everybody. Whatever. Everybody loves music,

54:52

right? Absolutely. And then the other

54:54

thing is that these communities

54:57

can use music to drive their

54:59

economy. They don't have to

55:01

have $10 million. They don't

55:03

even have to have a million dollars. Mount

55:06

Pleasant, Tennessee yesterday.

55:09

Oh, yeah. Meeting with them and

55:11

they do a music on the

55:13

porch series. And it's once once

55:15

a week. Starting

55:17

in April through like October. Yeah.

55:19

And they they go to somebody's

55:22

house. They have an artist come. They

55:24

have like two or three artists come and perform

55:26

on their porch. That's cool. Bringing food trucks. And

55:28

it and it brings in hundreds of

55:30

people to hear me, you know, and

55:32

it might be somebody they know. Great.

55:34

You know, it's It's just an event.

55:37

Free music. The bands are

55:39

getting paid. And

55:42

the people come from all

55:44

over the middle, mid -state to

55:46

converge on a little Mount Pleasant

55:48

to listen to some music.

55:50

And that's what it's all

55:53

about. That's what it, using

55:55

music to drive your economy, to

55:57

get people to come to

55:59

your city. And it also

56:01

helps people stay in a

56:03

city to move to a city.

56:06

You retain not only

56:08

the creative class, but also

56:10

just getting people to

56:12

move to your city.

56:14

Yeah. And what's the

56:16

best place for people to

56:18

find out more info on this?

56:20

Go to TNEntertains .com. TNEntertains .com.

56:22

TNEntertains .com. It's got the directory.

56:24

It's got all the information on

56:26

anything that we do. As

56:29

far as what we do, as far the incentives

56:31

go, we do have a scoring incentive, which

56:33

is for anybody doing

56:35

a film or a

56:38

video game or a

56:40

television show, and

56:42

they need to produce a score

56:44

for that. We incentivize that. So if

56:46

you come in and you hire

56:48

10, 15, 20 musicians to come play

56:50

on the score, then you

56:52

could get some money back from the

56:54

state by doing it here initial. Oh, that's

56:56

cool. are in the state. Well, I

56:58

appreciate you coming on with us. Thanks for

57:00

having me. I'm going to be following

57:02

in the future. It's cool, especially embracing the

57:04

independent artist, the independent venue. We

57:07

have to embrace that now, or our

57:09

live nation is going to own it all.

57:11

But you're right, though. Live nation, there's

57:13

always time to fix your reputation and get

57:15

on board. Yes. Yes. Hopefully, there's hope

57:17

for that. But I appreciate what you guys

57:19

do. Yes. And I hope

57:21

when I'm here next year, they were

57:23

talking about, you know, All the money

57:25

that we have in this fund that we're ready.

57:27

Hey, I'm ready for that. But yeah, got to

57:29

keep music alive. Exciting stuff, man. I didn't know

57:31

nothing about this until now. And I'm super interested

57:33

in it. Well, that's what I'm here for, you

57:35

know, is to promote the music office for the

57:38

state of Tennessee. Cool deal. Well, thanks

57:40

for doing this. Yeah, you're doing some honorable

57:42

work, my friend. I love that. Once

58:00

I had a girl on

58:02

Rocky Top, half bearer or the

58:04

half cat While

58:06

there's a meat for sweet and

58:08

soda fire, I still

58:10

dream about that Rocky

58:20

Top you'll always be,

58:22

home sweet home to

58:24

me Good

58:26

ol' Rocky Top, Rocky

58:28

Top Tennessee Rocky

58:30

Top Tennessee Once

58:36

two strangers find ol' Rocky

58:38

Top Looking for a moving

58:40

shot still Strangers

58:42

ain't come down from Rocky

58:44

Top That can they never

58:46

will Love

58:55

your stuff Last

58:59

time I picked up a mic like

59:01

this, so I got COVID and the flu

59:03

at the same time Yeah, that's why

59:05

we put a condom on it We're

59:07

protected. I'll just

59:09

stick a condom in my mouth.

59:11

All way to start an interview

59:13

Yeah. Well, man. It was

59:16

good seeing you last night. was fun man. We

59:18

had a blast You did a hell of a job

59:20

man. And if you get to see you do

59:22

a and boots tune. I made

59:24

night I got to see cats

59:27

and booze back in the day

59:29

I that song since 2003. Really? Wow.

59:31

Wow And I

59:33

was really excited about Bring your ass

59:36

here. I my mic

59:38

over here But the thing

59:40

I was really excited about

59:42

was Billy and I have

59:44

been talking, Billy Sheehan Yeah.

59:46

Yeah, been talking about doing

59:49

some stuff together and was

59:51

so excited to hear Billy Sheehan.

59:53

Can you imagine Billy Sheehan playing

59:55

on the and Blue Sun? Oh,

59:57

that'd be insane Oh fuck outta

59:59

here, right? But Billy

1:00:01

called me. He goes, there's

1:00:03

five, there's five time signature changes. I

1:00:05

don't have time to learn it. And

1:00:08

I'm just like, really? My

1:00:10

music's that complicated? No, but honestly, yeah,

1:00:12

he didn't have time to learn

1:00:14

the other two musics, but he's like,

1:00:16

we are jamming together. That's awesome. So

1:00:19

we, you know,

1:00:21

we did... I love

1:00:24

that. It was great.

1:00:26

It was awesome. That's one of my favorite songs,

1:00:28

man. Yeah, I love that song. I

1:00:32

just think the beginning, the opening

1:00:34

of that song is just like...

1:00:36

It's the pure essence of rock

1:00:38

and roll. Plus, when I was

1:00:40

a kid, I saw him about

1:00:42

a thousand times. It

1:00:45

didn't matter. If

1:00:47

Steve Merriott was fucked up

1:00:49

on heroin or what, they

1:00:52

just couldn't make a mistake.

1:00:54

They were just a true epitome

1:00:56

of a heavy, loose rock. There's

1:00:59

nobody like the pie. No, and

1:01:01

Merriott's such an underrated singer. When it

1:01:03

comes to people talking about the

1:01:05

historic rock singers of all time, that

1:01:07

guy just doesn't get mentioned enough. No,

1:01:10

he was really great. I

1:01:12

mean, yeah. We could talk

1:01:15

about Mary at all damn day long

1:01:17

and what a guy You know, I

1:01:19

like I like when he was talking

1:01:21

like mainly he would tell people about

1:01:23

black coffee. So I'm really black. I'm

1:01:25

a black woman inside Black coffee So

1:01:27

then like I said last night you

1:01:29

you busted out the cats and boots

1:01:31

song I'm like, oh hell yeah, you

1:01:33

know because catching boots was kind of

1:01:36

a thing It was like it was

1:01:38

here and then it was gone, you

1:01:40

know, and it's like man And I

1:01:42

know it lasts longer than that, but

1:01:44

for a kid from Wisconsin just discovering

1:01:46

music, it was like, here's a CD

1:01:48

from a new band. And it's like,

1:01:50

oh, this is great. And then all

1:01:52

of a sudden, it was like, everything

1:01:54

changed in the music scene. All a

1:01:56

sudden, if you're not wearing a flannel

1:01:59

shirt and some dirty ass pants, you

1:02:01

ain't cool no more. But I never

1:02:03

saw it that way. And it's like,

1:02:05

man, I love this album, kicked in

1:02:07

Claude. I want more of this band.

1:02:09

And then it's like, is there going

1:02:11

to be more? No, there's no more.

1:02:13

Like, what the hell? What was really

1:02:15

cool about Grunge, I think, was... I'm

1:02:17

one of these people, I always tend

1:02:20

to try to look at the optimum.

1:02:22

And you know what, I can't lie. Sure,

1:02:25

Grunge came along and knocked me

1:02:27

out of the park. But there

1:02:29

were some really fucking cool guitar

1:02:31

tones. Oh yeah? Yeah. And Cantrell

1:02:33

was a friend of mine. I

1:02:36

just loved Mother Love Bones

1:02:38

from the beginning. Soundgarden,

1:02:40

I wasn't a huge fan of,

1:02:42

you know, but I had complete

1:02:45

and total respect for Chris, an

1:02:47

amazing singer. And,

1:02:49

you know, it all started

1:02:51

with Mother Love Mountain for me. And

1:02:53

when I heard Nirvana, I just

1:02:55

thought, finally, somebody's just like, just

1:02:58

playing it as loud as they can

1:03:00

and saying whatever the hell they want to

1:03:02

say. And he was just a genius.

1:03:04

We were born in the same day. Yeah.

1:03:06

Kurt Cobain and I were born on

1:03:08

the same day. Oh, wow. No shed. Cool,

1:03:11

huh? I guess. I don't know. We

1:03:13

just hope you stick around a little

1:03:15

longer than he did. Yeah, right. Yeah,

1:03:18

I don't play with shotguns.

1:03:20

I don't like that much.

1:03:22

But yeah, no. I mean,

1:03:24

I think that we did

1:03:26

a show with Pearl Jam

1:03:29

at Oahu State football field. Back

1:03:31

in the day, I think it might have

1:03:33

been one of our first shows. We were down

1:03:36

in Honolulu. We played the Pink Cadillac next

1:03:38

thing. We're in a tent

1:03:40

backstage drinking tequila shots with

1:03:42

the guys in Pearl Jam. They

1:03:44

were nice guys. It

1:03:46

wasn't like they had an attitude or

1:03:48

anything, but they were surfers. I

1:03:51

don't understand the whole crunch thing either, really.

1:03:53

I mean, it was like, let

1:03:55

them wear what they want to

1:03:57

wear. I was looking at it, but...

1:03:59

didn't agree with it being like

1:04:01

part of a social statement. Right, yeah.

1:04:04

And I really didn't think, you know,

1:04:06

I mean, the mental health issue up

1:04:08

in the Northeast is a serious thing.

1:04:10

Oh, yeah. You know, there's people that

1:04:12

have the highest rate of suicide, you

1:04:15

know, depression. It's such

1:04:17

a gloomy -ass place, you know. Maryland.

1:04:19

You know, it's a gloomy place. But

1:04:22

that was the same thing with me. Like,

1:04:24

it's all rock and roll to me. But

1:04:26

then you'd have people go, oh. I don't

1:04:28

listen to the Motley crew no more. I

1:04:30

like Pearl Jam now. And it's like, well,

1:04:32

why can't you like both? You know, it's

1:04:34

all rock. Well, you know, it's not their

1:04:36

fault. I think a lot of it is

1:04:38

just like the record companies. Yeah. You know,

1:04:41

the big, you know, the big music moneymaker

1:04:43

machine, you know, they're just

1:04:45

going to go off and they're going

1:04:47

to create new genres. And then

1:04:49

you got all these other cats that

1:04:51

want to follow. I'm not knocking

1:04:53

the hell, man. Like, was it either,

1:04:55

no, it wasn't some type of

1:04:57

pilots. It was the name of

1:04:59

another one that came, oh,

1:05:02

Alice in Chains? Yeah. OK.

1:05:04

The original Alice in Chains,

1:05:06

get this. I'm friends with

1:05:08

the original guitar player. I'm

1:05:10

old and I'm having a brain

1:05:12

fart. But he showed me pictures

1:05:14

of the original version of Alice

1:05:17

in Chains. Oh, glam don't. They

1:05:19

were glam don't. Oh, yeah. They

1:05:21

looked like Britney Foxx something. Oh,

1:05:23

yeah. Spandex and shit.

1:05:25

Yeah. So they evolved. So

1:05:27

yeah. I mean, to reinforce

1:05:29

your point, I

1:05:31

think a lot of it was

1:05:33

trendy, you know,

1:05:36

a lot of it was the scene,

1:05:38

you know. I mean, when you

1:05:40

stop to think about everybody's on heroin,

1:05:42

you know, it's like, oh, well,

1:05:44

I wake up after, I wake up

1:05:46

after a bad binge, you know,

1:05:48

off of the heavy bone, and, you

1:05:50

know, I go on stage or

1:05:53

whatever, you know, I don't know, people

1:05:55

weren't really focused on that, but...

1:05:57

a firm believer in theatrics and you

1:05:59

know I just think that you

1:06:01

know you should give people what they

1:06:03

pay for and it doesn't mean

1:06:05

going out and being something different it

1:06:08

just means giving them something special

1:06:10

I mean right you know I grew

1:06:12

up with with a lot of

1:06:14

bands and it was cool man I

1:06:16

remember Zeppelin's tour where Paige had

1:06:18

the dragon trance and you know I

1:06:20

remember the stones they were all

1:06:22

tricked out in their glam stuff and

1:06:26

Just, you know, a show.

1:06:28

Put on a fucking show, man. Alice

1:06:30

Cooper, kiss. on

1:06:32

fucking show. It's theatrics. Ain't nothing worse than going and

1:06:35

seeing a band you're excited to see and all

1:06:37

they want to do is stare at their shoes while

1:06:39

they're on the stage. Like, come on, do something.

1:06:41

You can stay home if that's all they're going to

1:06:43

do. Right. Well, you know what

1:06:45

it did, man, is it showcased a

1:06:47

few bands that had exceptional talent, but

1:06:49

then everyone else came out. And

1:06:51

it was like, who

1:06:53

are I? You know, weren't

1:06:55

you guys just cutting my grass a minute ago? I

1:06:59

do want to ask

1:07:01

you about Heavy Bones. I

1:07:03

love that record. How did

1:07:05

that whole project get started? Franky put

1:07:07

it together or did you? No, Kats

1:07:10

and Boots had a... We

1:07:12

had an idiot for a manager

1:07:14

out of New York and

1:07:16

he was spending all our money.

1:07:19

Same story over and over again. Jam

1:07:22

and I, EMI wanted us

1:07:24

to keep going but our manager

1:07:26

ran out of money and

1:07:29

Motley Crue asked us to, they

1:07:31

wanted us to open because

1:07:33

in Japan we outsold them. Our

1:07:35

record was number three of

1:07:37

the year and billboard behind the

1:07:40

rolling of the stone steel

1:07:42

wheels and Prince's Batman. And

1:07:44

then the record before that, we sold it

1:07:46

in a little tiny ad. you know we

1:07:49

made the record ourselves and it was moving

1:07:51

50 ,000 units a month so it went

1:07:53

to number one. was the biggest selling record

1:07:55

in the country but we didn't have a

1:07:57

record label so were on the indie charts. But

1:08:00

then Vince was like, he's like, you're

1:08:02

my favorite singer and before we go

1:08:04

on stage we listen to the Cats

1:08:06

and Boots Kicked and Claude record, we

1:08:08

get wound up. Oh that's cool. And

1:08:10

so I was friends with Vince and

1:08:12

Tommy mainly for the most part and

1:08:14

so they wanted us to go out

1:08:17

and start opening the the

1:08:19

girls tour out and we didn't

1:08:21

have any money. And I'm like,

1:08:23

where's our tourist support? So we

1:08:25

fired our manager. Anyways, long

1:08:27

story, we broke up and

1:08:29

my attorney, Peter Lopez, called me.

1:08:31

He says, hey, Michael Austin, he

1:08:33

said he's got a fantastic deal for

1:08:35

you waiting on the table. Just come

1:08:37

over to Warner Brothers and sign it.

1:08:40

And at the time, I was hanging

1:08:42

with Eddie Van Halen a lot. And

1:08:44

all I ever heard was about LSD.

1:08:46

You know, lead singer disease. Well,

1:08:50

he would know. And Steve

1:08:52

Stevens, you know, who was like, you

1:08:54

know, telling me like, oh, the thing

1:08:56

with Billy Eidolon, like, okay, he's like,

1:08:58

more or less out of a gig

1:09:00

because, you know, Billy's going solo. So

1:09:02

I didn't want to be that guy.

1:09:04

Not only that, but I grew up

1:09:06

in the 60s and 70s. And so

1:09:08

it was just like, I want to

1:09:10

band with integrity. And I want to

1:09:12

band, you know, of guys. But, you

1:09:14

know, Hollywood was a time that I

1:09:16

didn't spend enough time in Hollywood to

1:09:18

realize everybody was stabbing each other in

1:09:20

the back and clamoring for success. And,

1:09:23

you know, weren't they like Chris Squire

1:09:25

from Yes, called them cowboys, because they'd go

1:09:27

in and they'd poop up their hair

1:09:29

and buy a guitar and learn three chords.

1:09:31

And they thought they were, you know,

1:09:33

but anyways. So

1:09:36

when Heavy Bones came together, I wanted

1:09:38

to be more musical. on this guy

1:09:40

playing guitar. He was a

1:09:43

teacher down at GIT, Gary

1:09:45

Hoey. Yeah. So I brought

1:09:47

Gary into the band, and I thought, you

1:09:49

know, it's like the way I work

1:09:51

with guitar players at the time, I thought,

1:09:53

well, I'm going to utilize him to

1:09:55

get my ideas across, because I can't play

1:09:57

like him. And so we'd be in

1:09:59

their jam, and I'd say, can you got

1:10:02

a riff that'll sound like this, you

1:10:04

know? And he'd be like, yeah, how's this?

1:10:06

And we'd work out a riff. And

1:10:08

I'd say, let's go to Lixillidian. And he'd

1:10:10

go, oh, look, Salidian here. And I'd

1:10:12

be like, that's just fantastic. He's amazing. Yeah.

1:10:15

But like David Bowie said, there's

1:10:17

a big difference between an

1:10:20

artist and a musician. I

1:10:22

don't want to sound pompous or

1:10:24

anything, but it's true. Sure. There's

1:10:26

a big difference between an artist and

1:10:28

a musician. Like Bowie said, a musician

1:10:31

will dazzle you with what they know,

1:10:33

but an artist will drop their guitar

1:10:35

down the back steps. and

1:10:37

make you feel something.

1:10:40

So I brought Gary in

1:10:42

because I was really

1:10:44

excited about being able to

1:10:46

utilize his knowledge of

1:10:48

music theory, things like that.

1:10:50

And I came to find that

1:10:53

there was so much perfection and

1:10:55

academics, he would say, in his

1:10:57

training. I would have to like...

1:10:59

him in the closet with a

1:11:01

412 cabinet with the head out

1:11:03

in the hallway, my feet against

1:11:05

the door, and then I'd crank

1:11:07

it to the edge of feedback

1:11:09

and he'd be going, open the

1:11:11

fucking door! And

1:11:14

so I'm like, I'm like, control

1:11:16

it, bitch! And

1:11:19

so it was kind of cool. I

1:11:21

mean, after a while, it became very cool

1:11:23

because he started to flow with it

1:11:25

and said, oh, I hear how it... Lays

1:11:27

into the music. Yeah, so it was

1:11:29

really like me bringing Gary and coaching him

1:11:31

along and then I felt okay I

1:11:33

think we got something here and I was

1:11:35

living with Steven piracy from red at

1:11:38

the time And so I had this little

1:11:40

machine in my apartment at task cam

1:11:42

3d8 So, you know, we started like doing

1:11:44

demos and Steven would come over and

1:11:46

go. What are you guys playing? Look and

1:11:48

he'd hold out his arm and there'd

1:11:50

be goosebumps He's like you're giving me goosebumps.

1:11:52

So I thought oh, this is great.

1:11:54

We're gonna go and so Gary and I

1:11:57

were like and I was kind of

1:11:59

a wild child, so Gary for the most

1:12:01

part, you know, a lot of the

1:12:03

beginnings of heavy bones. He would follow me

1:12:05

around with acoustic guitar, and he would

1:12:07

just play riffs until I stopped and went,

1:12:09

wait, what are you playing? That's

1:12:12

why there's so many acoustic tunes,

1:12:14

but if you listen to the

1:12:16

new record I just put out,

1:12:19

the real heavy bones. One of the

1:12:21

bonus tracks is the original demo

1:12:23

that we did for Summers in the

1:12:25

Rain. Oh, nice. Yeah. Take

1:12:27

a good listen to that song,

1:12:29

Deep. And you'll hear it explains

1:12:31

pretty much in a nutshell what

1:12:33

Heavy Bones was supposed to be. And

1:12:35

then you go back to the

1:12:37

Warner Brothers version that's on there that

1:12:39

Richie Zito produced. Jimbo

1:12:41

Barton from Operation Mind

1:12:43

Crime mixed. Yeah. And

1:12:46

it takes a far away from

1:12:48

the intention. with

1:12:50

a $400 bag of weed habit.

1:12:52

No, but I love Jimbo. And

1:12:57

the record was great because

1:12:59

it was like Stephen Tyler was

1:13:01

there almost every day, and

1:13:03

he would come in and say,

1:13:05

this record's phenomenal. Nobody

1:13:07

really grasped the original intention of

1:13:09

that record. I think if I was

1:13:11

able to go, because Richard Black

1:13:13

came in to produce it at first,

1:13:16

and the guys in the band

1:13:18

were, Who was that weirdo? He sat

1:13:20

in the corner and smoked cigarettes

1:13:22

the whole time we were playing. And

1:13:25

I'm thinking to

1:13:27

myself, yeah, he's

1:13:29

getting it. But

1:13:32

then they brought in Richie

1:13:34

Zito, who had just done, like,

1:13:36

heart and cheap trick. And

1:13:38

it just got overproduced and mushed.

1:13:40

And plus, everybody, they got

1:13:42

the dollar sign bite. So we

1:13:44

ended up. overproducing

1:13:46

the fucking record. I quit

1:13:48

four times and we ended up

1:13:51

spending $437 ,000 on it. Half

1:13:53

of it went to sushi

1:13:55

lunches and bringing in Playboy bunnies

1:13:57

to play Strip Ping Pong,

1:13:59

you know. Well,

1:14:03

we have to revisit this record. We'd

1:14:05

love to have you back on for

1:14:07

our Albums Unleashed series and go over

1:14:09

the making of the record because I

1:14:11

think there's a lot of good stories

1:14:13

there. But if you go to my

1:14:15

website, it'll kind of give you a

1:14:18

little bit of insight. Go to JoelLsMusic .com.

1:14:20

OK. And I need somebody

1:14:22

to help me with my website. But

1:14:24

if you go to the scroll down, just

1:14:26

look for real heavy

1:14:29

bones, RHB version one. OK.

1:14:31

And then click on

1:14:33

it. And there's a whole

1:14:35

story about how we

1:14:37

actually recorded it live in

1:14:39

rehearsals with five microphones. I

1:14:42

was singing in the bathroom.

1:14:44

We had two mics on

1:14:46

Frankie, a mic on Gary's

1:14:48

amp and Rex's amp. And

1:14:50

on five tracks, we recorded

1:14:52

the entire record. And then

1:14:54

we used the lead vocal

1:14:56

track to put the guitar

1:14:58

solos on. And then we

1:15:00

had three tracks left over

1:15:02

to do background vocals and

1:15:04

stuff. And so there's a

1:15:06

lot of background vocals. And they're

1:15:08

actually cool, the ones we did

1:15:10

in... You can get this to get

1:15:12

the album on the website. You can get it

1:15:14

right over there. I'm going to buy it today. No,

1:15:16

I'm going to buy it. Fuck that. it. Listen.

1:15:19

Yeah, we're going to show where in demand. We

1:15:21

only get a little bit of time. This is

1:15:23

Amy. But we want to have you back on

1:15:25

the show with us one time. Yeah, we'll have

1:15:27

you back for sure. the video going. Well, OK.

1:15:29

Well, here, you know, I actually had business cards

1:15:31

made up. I got to find them. Amy,

1:15:34

can you help me find my business cards? No,

1:15:36

I'm just kidding. We'll get it from

1:15:38

1:15:41

1:15:43

1:15:45

1:15:47

1:15:49

You're a trap. You're

1:15:52

having fun today, huh? I'm

1:15:55

trying to say this world. If

1:15:57

I say anything appropriate, just

1:15:59

1:16:01

1:16:04

1:16:06

fist though. Beautiful

1:16:08

lady. Hey listen man.

1:16:10

1:16:12

1:17:22

1:17:25

1:17:29

I'm the first class high time my

1:17:31

1:17:33

1:17:39

1:17:42

1:18:47

I'm gonna let Aaron be lead on this.

1:18:49

I'll chime in with stupid jokes. All

1:18:51

right, here we are at Desperate Podcast.

1:18:53

is our final interview of the day,

1:18:55

and I can't think of a better

1:18:57

way to wrap things up here. This

1:18:59

party that we've had today, so many

1:19:02

amazing people here, rock stars, podcasters, party

1:19:04

people, people selling records, all this great

1:19:06

stuff. I love it. So

1:19:08

we gotta wrap things up with the

1:19:10

one and only Joey Bro right here.

1:19:12

Right here, one and only. Joey, man.

1:19:14

I know this is right up your

1:19:16

alley. You've got to love all this,

1:19:18

don't you? Yes, it's interesting. I mean,

1:19:20

I've never done this before, you know,

1:19:22

but I kind of felt like it's

1:19:24

coming sooner or later, right? the

1:19:27

perfect place to do it. I mean,

1:19:29

all the rock fans and everybody and you.

1:19:31

You got such great reception last night

1:19:33

when you played live with the band. That

1:19:35

was awesome, man. It was very cool

1:19:37

to see you get up there and do

1:19:40

your thing in front of a live

1:19:42

audience like that. And really kind of stick

1:19:44

it to the naysayers a little bit.

1:19:46

Everybody's, oh, he's never going to play live

1:19:48

with a band. That's never going to

1:19:50

happen. We made it look easy, didn't we,

1:19:52

bro? You made it look really easy.

1:19:54

You made it look easy and fun. And

1:19:57

everybody loved it. So everybody said that's

1:19:59

never going to happen. Uh -uh, Nashville, Tennessee,

1:20:01

Rockin' Pied 2025. It happened.

1:20:03

That's right. We can do it again

1:20:05

too, okay? That'd be awesome.

1:20:07

Let me ask you this. I came

1:20:09

into you just recently, but my wife's

1:20:11

a huge fan of yours. What

1:20:14

was the first video and

1:20:16

what was the decision to

1:20:18

upload yourself just having a

1:20:21

blast? Do you remember

1:20:23

the song and what made you decide

1:20:25

to put it up online? It

1:20:28

was one that went viral, man. And

1:20:31

the song Wicked Games by Chris

1:20:33

Isaac. Yeah. When it went viral, I

1:20:35

said, hey, we got something going.

1:20:37

Yeah. So, you know, so I went

1:20:39

with it, kept going with it.

1:20:41

Nice. And it got me this far.

1:20:43

So, yeah, it was like 10 years ago,

1:20:45

you know, so. Yeah. My

1:20:48

ankle stopped. Have you

1:20:50

always been a big rock and roll

1:20:52

guy? All my life. Yeah. Country

1:20:54

too. I mean, I had to kind

1:20:56

of like. I was more rock

1:20:58

and roll and then as I got

1:21:00

older I started sucking up some

1:21:02

of that country because it was pretty

1:21:05

cool with guys we had doing

1:21:07

country you know like George straight and

1:21:09

you know Travis Tritt and Alan

1:21:11

Jackson and all of them I was

1:21:13

digging their music right and I'll

1:21:15

sing them well okay so and they're

1:21:17

easy for me to sing them

1:21:19

a natural man so But

1:21:21

rock and roll. Yeah, you're gonna have

1:21:23

to be something special to put that

1:21:25

shit out. Okay. Yeah And I can't

1:21:27

yeah, I can cover a lot of

1:21:29

stuff. I heard I heard Billy Gibbons

1:21:32

follows you and chimes in from time

1:21:34

to time That's awesome. That's amazing. Are

1:21:36

you big ZZ Top guy? Yeah, I

1:21:38

love ZZ Top especially that 70s stuff,

1:21:40

right? Yeah, yeah fan. I was listening

1:21:42

to Fandango the other day. I love

1:21:44

that album. They just they got it

1:21:46

man. ZZ Top's got it, bro Well,

1:21:50

how do you react to all this

1:21:52

attention you get now? I mean, is

1:21:54

it strange to have people running up

1:21:56

to you and talking to you? mean,

1:21:58

I'm having a chance to... People know

1:22:00

me that off the internet that I

1:22:02

don't know them. Right. And now I'm

1:22:05

having a chance to shake hands and

1:22:07

hug necks and meet them, you know?

1:22:09

Yeah. That's what I...

1:22:11

That's a cool thing. Yeah. We

1:22:13

ought to get together, man, because a

1:22:15

lot of them I see love me. and

1:22:18

they follow me and they won't miss nothing

1:22:20

I do. So I get a chance to

1:22:22

meet them. I mean, what

1:22:24

else can you ask for? For

1:22:26

sure, man. We should meet, we should

1:22:28

meet. So for this rockin' pod thing,

1:22:30

was there people that you knew that

1:22:32

came specifically for the only reason is

1:22:35

to see you in person? No, I

1:22:37

mean, meet them for the first time,

1:22:39

exactly what it was. But they knew

1:22:41

me. And now you get to

1:22:43

meet me in person and get to know who

1:22:45

I really am. That

1:22:48

should happen. So everybody's loved you. I

1:22:50

haven't heard anybody say, oh man, Joey Bro.

1:22:52

Everyone's like, this guy is amazing. I'm

1:22:54

so glad he's here. Because I think at

1:22:56

first, because we got famous rock stars

1:22:58

that are here and stuff. And then some

1:23:00

people are like, Joey Bro? And I

1:23:02

was like, trust me, this is going to

1:23:04

be awesome. People are going to love

1:23:06

it. And we're right. 100 % right. You

1:23:08

being here really added a whole other level

1:23:10

to Rockin' Pod to where it's always

1:23:13

fun. But you just being here takes it

1:23:15

to another level of fun. And it's

1:23:17

been great having you here. Well, and the

1:23:19

way I view it is, you're

1:23:21

actually serving a purpose. Like you're providing

1:23:23

a service to people like us, because what

1:23:25

we do with our podcast, we try

1:23:27

to keep rock and roll alive, cover the

1:23:29

bands at the radio, just ignores. And

1:23:32

what you're doing, you're also, a

1:23:34

door opener to people that may not

1:23:36

know that music. Got a brand, man.

1:23:38

You've probably got people doing deep dives

1:23:40

into those bands because they saw your

1:23:42

video. I'm trying to keep the fire

1:23:44

burning, man. That's because we don't want

1:23:47

to lose that. Yeah. Because if you

1:23:49

lose it y 'all don't learn from

1:23:51

it The new the new band members,

1:23:53

you know the day the younger folk

1:23:55

they need to Kind of like go

1:23:57

back look at these rock bands and

1:23:59

then you'll learn What perfection is bro?

1:24:01

All right, you got to bring that

1:24:03

perfection to the table right you want

1:24:05

to Move up. Yeah, you got to

1:24:07

work your ass off. Yeah. Yeah, you'll pay

1:24:10

your dues like they did. Yeah Well, you've

1:24:12

been super busy this year. So like you

1:24:14

did a video. You've got a single out

1:24:16

How how crazy is your life right now?

1:24:18

Are you busy like all the time? I

1:24:20

am a lot of cameos, you know, I

1:24:22

do a lot of that every day. Yeah

1:24:26

Yeah, it really is. And does it feel like Strike

1:24:28

While the Iron is hot? I just got to

1:24:30

keep putting this stuff out while people want it. I

1:24:32

don't to let these people down. That's right. I

1:24:34

feel like I will if I start. Yeah. Did

1:24:37

last night give you the bug

1:24:39

to want to go out and do

1:24:41

more live stuff? Yeah. I like

1:24:43

it. I mean, the band behind you,

1:24:45

I can hear it better. Yeah.

1:24:47

And I feel more of the vibe,

1:24:50

feel more of the music for

1:24:52

me to put it out. Yeah. put

1:24:54

it out hard. Yeah. And

1:24:56

you still living in Louisiana?

1:24:58

Yeah. Yeah. You're thinking about moving

1:25:00

here though, aren't you? Well, I'd love to, but

1:25:02

it's really expensive here. It's very expensive. Yeah. Yeah.

1:25:05

But, you know, it's

1:25:07

a beautiful place. It is. But so you're

1:25:09

going more into the country thing with

1:25:11

like the Hardy video and stuff, or are

1:25:13

you going to do some rock and

1:25:15

roll stuff too? I'm going to

1:25:18

do rock and roll stuff too. I mean, you

1:25:20

know, I mean, Hardy's kind of like. He's a

1:25:22

little bit of both. Like a pop rock kind

1:25:24

of. You know the man that's that's pretty cool.

1:25:26

That's cool. I love his stuff at Jim Bob,

1:25:28

you know, I listen to that said wow He's

1:25:30

kicking it man. He's kicking it good. I love

1:25:32

it. Who were who were you some of your

1:25:34

favorite bands growing up rock and roll band? Van

1:25:38

Halen for sure. You know AC

1:25:40

DC left Def Lepper Bon Jovi Yeah,

1:25:42

you know all all of the bands

1:25:44

that you love. I love yeah, okay,

1:25:46

so right on you know, we know

1:25:48

what rock is man. We can't hide

1:25:51

from that So

1:25:53

it's all, you know,

1:25:55

even at my age, man, I

1:25:57

like what you like. Yeah, you should tell

1:25:59

him the idea I had for your show.

1:26:02

Oh, I do a

1:26:04

wrestling show here in Nashville,

1:26:06

pro wrestling. a pro wrestling fan?

1:26:09

Yeah, I like wrestling. Yeah, I like watching

1:26:11

it. So I've been writing and directing

1:26:13

a pro wrestling show here in Nashville. And

1:26:15

if you ever get the itch to get

1:26:17

involved in something like that, I would love to

1:26:20

have you as a guest, put you in

1:26:22

a prominent role, and have a lot of fun

1:26:24

with that. I know the fans of Pro

1:26:26

Wrestling would love the heck out of seeing you.

1:26:28

We could, yeah. you imagine him being like

1:26:30

a surprise guest manager, and then he shows up

1:26:32

in the ring, and then just starts wiggling

1:26:34

his hips and doing a song? Yeah. I could

1:26:36

totally see that. I could totally see the

1:26:38

fans going crazy. I think that would be awesome.

1:26:41

But yeah, but now there's a lot of

1:26:43

there's a lot of potential for things

1:26:46

you can do I mean you could you

1:26:48

can go a lot of places So

1:26:50

I hope you'll do more live stuff like

1:26:52

this in the future. Yeah, because it's

1:26:54

it's always better when you can actually see

1:26:56

the people, you know online It's just

1:26:58

anonymous people. You don't know who they are

1:27:00

But yeah, it's great when you just

1:27:02

like when me and him do this and

1:27:04

we get to meet listeners of our

1:27:06

podcast It's just awesome to hear that and

1:27:08

you probably get the same story like

1:27:10

you'll hear people like I was going through

1:27:12

cancer treatments, and you helped take me

1:27:14

away from that. I was going through a

1:27:16

divorce. You helped take me away. So

1:27:18

it's like, you know, we're doing this for

1:27:20

fun. You don't realize that you're serving

1:27:22

a purpose for other people, but that's the

1:27:24

magic of it, you know? Yeah, we

1:27:26

had one, I had one cameo where this

1:27:28

guy's mother was, watched all my videos

1:27:31

for a long time, and she

1:27:33

was suffering with cancer, and she passed

1:27:35

away, you know, and the son, Let

1:27:38

me know that she you know his

1:27:40

mother loved me man. Yeah watch all

1:27:42

my stuff Wow, and it kept a

1:27:44

smile on her face when she was

1:27:46

in the hospital Yeah taking treatment and

1:27:48

all but he she still passed away.

1:27:50

Yeah, so she passed away, you know

1:27:54

continue watching my videos. Really? Yeah. You brought

1:27:56

her some joy in what might have been

1:27:58

the toughest time of her life. You were

1:28:00

the escape. Exactly right. Yeah. We don't

1:28:02

a lot of times don't think about that

1:28:04

when we're doing what we do because we're

1:28:06

just having fun. Right. It comes natural to

1:28:08

us. Right. And then when you realize you

1:28:10

know you're actually touching people's lives and making

1:28:13

a difference that's one of the best feelings

1:28:15

in the world. It does and that makes

1:28:17

you keep going. I mean you know you

1:28:19

won't you know when you can do

1:28:21

that You can touch people's hearts and stuff,

1:28:23

yeah. You won't stop. a

1:28:26

good thing. And with music, I mean,

1:28:28

music is the one thing that brings everyone

1:28:30

together. Oh yeah, music, everybody loves. I

1:28:32

mean, if we have hope for anything in this

1:28:34

country, I would hope music could be part of

1:28:36

that. And that's why I go country, and that's

1:28:39

why I go rock and roll, pop, whatever. I

1:28:41

try to satisfy everybody's

1:28:43

needs for music. and

1:28:45

bring back some of the old stuff too.

1:28:47

Yeah. Please do a Thin Lizzy song sometime.

1:28:50

Yeah. I would love to see that. I

1:28:52

know, right? I'm a big fan of Thin

1:28:54

Lizzy. Thank you. Oh, and

1:28:56

a Kiss song. And a Kiss song. Yeah. Yeah.

1:28:59

Yeah. Yeah. Let's put the

1:29:01

X in sex. Yeah, that's a song.

1:29:03

That would be a one for

1:29:05

you to do. would be a perfect

1:29:07

one for you. All people would go nuts

1:29:09

over that. Yeah. Let's put

1:29:11

the X in sex by Kiss.

1:29:13

Right, Dad? No. I'm not

1:29:15

right. And you gotta do this.

1:29:17

Yeah, they're like powders. And

1:29:21

I love it that you love all the

1:29:23

same stuff we do. When they talked about

1:29:25

you coming here, I thought that's perfect because

1:29:27

he's a kindred spirit with us. He loves

1:29:29

this stuff the same way we do. And

1:29:31

I thought what a thrill it'll be for

1:29:34

people to come see him and how cool

1:29:36

it would be for you to be in

1:29:38

a room full of people that are just

1:29:40

like you and me and everybody else that's

1:29:42

here that just love and celebrate this music

1:29:44

and in turn love and celebrate what you're

1:29:46

doing. It's got to be a good feeling

1:29:48

to meet. So many people that really appreciate

1:29:50

what you do. And all these

1:29:52

bands that played last night had a

1:29:54

third in Lindsey. They know who I

1:29:56

was, man. And they

1:29:58

showed me some good respect. That's great.

1:30:00

I'm happy it worked out good. It

1:30:02

was great. It really was. Well,

1:30:04

National, all the musicians in this town are just

1:30:06

good people. Yeah, it's just that

1:30:09

a real community here. Yeah, man. It's a

1:30:11

spiritual feeling going walking through here, buddy.

1:30:13

Yeah. Well, tell you, every year, it's like,

1:30:15

it's my favorite dysfunctional family reunion, and

1:30:17

we get to do it the time. It

1:30:19

is, it is a reunion. Something

1:30:22

to be happy about and proud of,

1:30:24

you know. Yeah. Tennessee Rocks

1:30:26

it does so what songs you got coming up

1:30:28

soon on your videos I don't know I

1:30:30

hadn't had a chance to get home and you

1:30:32

know a lot of times I feel it

1:30:34

you know to me what it's got a hitch

1:30:36

in the moment yeah it hits me right

1:30:38

you know I feel like doing this man because

1:30:40

I feel it yeah and I'll come out

1:30:42

I bring it I guess it's brave I don't

1:30:44

know how you do I hate just talking

1:30:46

to people in public I couldn't imagine even doing

1:30:48

that on a camera yeah because I'm like

1:30:50

man that that guy's just living his life man

1:30:52

he's just fucking loving it you know yeah

1:30:54

and I was just like you You just have

1:30:56

to respect that. You just having a blast

1:30:58

out there. So Louisiana, you

1:31:00

a Lilian Axe fan, you like them?

1:31:02

They're from your neck of the woods. And

1:31:04

Steve Blaise from that band was at the

1:31:07

last Rockin' Pod. So we had them there. Did

1:31:09

you grow up seeing a bunch of cool

1:31:11

concerts down there? Yeah, I did. What were some

1:31:13

of your favorites that you saw? Van Halen,

1:31:15

I seen Kiss. Did you see

1:31:17

Kiss back in the heyday? Yeah. Back

1:31:19

in 1980, I seen Kiss, man. That

1:31:21

was awesome. Wow. And,

1:31:24

uh, too bad we

1:31:26

can't see them again, huh? Wow. Well,

1:31:28

we got YouTube for that. But,

1:31:31

uh, yeah, I've seen a lot

1:31:33

of Duran Duran. I've seen, I've

1:31:35

seen David Bowie, you know, seen

1:31:37

Elton John, you know, just,

1:31:40

just a lot of artists I've

1:31:42

actually seen. I've seen Elvis. Have

1:31:44

you? I was 12 years old.

1:31:46

Wow. How was that? Life

1:31:49

changing, all right? That's memories right there,

1:31:51

buddy. You won't forget. Yeah. I can't tell

1:31:53

you that. Elvis, one of your main

1:31:55

guys? Well, he wasn't, you know, but I

1:31:57

went with a lady that she He

1:31:59

was a fan, but but I

1:32:01

enjoyed the show, man. Oh, hell of an

1:32:04

entertainer, Elvis was badass. Yeah. He Nothing

1:32:06

but charisma. Yeah, he was badass. Yeah,

1:32:08

a lot of talent and charisma, right

1:32:10

on. Well, I think we're going get

1:32:12

cut off here soon, so we'll wrap

1:32:14

there, but as the guy that started

1:32:16

this whole thing, I gotta thank you

1:32:18

for being a part of it. I

1:32:21

1:32:23
