0:12

been working really hard on a brand

0:15

new and we're stepping away from

0:17

0:20

but we're still trying to tell

0:22

stories about family that's

0:24

why we're renaming this feed it's gonna be

0:26

0:29

forward or going to be be you all

0:31

0:33

family and about identity the

0:35

first new show coming out in the all

0:37

relative seed is called defining

0:40

diego and i have the host

0:42

of this new show with me now diego

0:45

she ty will he diego

0:47

the do things revenue

0:49

i'm really excited for listeners

0:51

to hear your stories so

0:53

can you tell them what this podcast is about

0:56

yeah so i was adopted from guatemala

0:59

nineteen ninety nine when i was nine months

1:01

old and so this story

1:03

is really centered

1:05

around what it's like to be adopted

1:07

and what it's like to know you're from two different

1:10

places i've grown up knowing

1:13

that's i have a birth family

1:15

and know in my birth family and

1:17

i've also grown up know in my adoptive

1:19

family and we're trying to look at how

1:22

these two world interact how

1:25

international adoption works

1:27

normally it got so big and ultimately

1:30

why shut down

1:31

the or international adoption is such a complicated

1:34

story but i'm really excited for this

1:36

show because obviously you

1:38

have such a personal connection

1:41

to it

1:42

yeah i mean it's twenty

1:44

three years of keep

1:47

of the growing up so

1:49

you're really get you know me as

1:51

a person but also i

1:54

know contextualize that with what

1:56

we're doing an outside

1:58

of just my personal

1:59

there is well

2:01

we really are trying to bring in more

2:04

voices than just the adoptee an

2:06

adoptive parents were trying to bring in

2:09

everyone and really many

2:11

different viewpoints as we can for this

2:13

i know from talking to adopt is

2:16

being adopted is not the only thing that

2:18

makes that person said tell our listeners

2:21

about you and what you enjoy

2:23

didn't and for you are

2:25

the run

2:26

from santiago too long and guatemala

2:29

and raised in saint paul minnesota

2:31

i play hockey use of the minnesota

2:34

wild of ,

2:36

even know that's kind of a curse on

2:40

on weightlifting running

2:42

reading history books and i'm currently

2:44

getting my masters in special education

2:47

and i'm going to be teaching at a high school this year

2:49

and also got

2:52

started

2:53

the santa really busy for

2:55

him really glad that you have taken the time

2:57

to share this incredible

3:00

personal story with us

3:03

and i'm really excited to hear the full series

3:05

full series get to work with you in the spring

3:08

on a couple of the bonus episodes

3:10

which was really fine but

3:13

one of the things that interest me

3:15

so much about their show in

3:17

addition to the subject matter is

3:19

that this podcast is really unique

3:21

in that it brings together

3:24

more than twenty years of recordings

3:27

and our listeners really gonna

3:29

get here your story of being an adopted

3:31

person and growing up in the united states

3:33

and especially that person

3:35

of color growing up with wait periods

3:38

in the united states that's

3:40

fascinating

3:42

i think you know one of the things that

3:44

i think the listeners shouldn't knows that

3:47

many of the recordings that you

3:50

here throughout the series

3:53

i'm also here in for the first time

3:56

having i just want the listeners to come away

3:58

with some edition ones

3:59

i'm not trying to tell you

4:02

to think one way or or another

4:04

on kind of hoping that

4:07

you take a deeper look at

4:09

what adoptions because on the surface

4:11

it seems

4:13

the simple

4:14

it's

4:15

it's much more complicated than that and i think

4:17

that's what we're really trying to to get

4:20

it and as podcast and we're really trying

4:22

to give voices to people that haven't

4:24

had voices in the store

4:26

yeah, i think that this going to really

4:28

resonate with our cuz

4:30

if you enjoyed biohacks family

4:33

secrets, which i was about donor conception

4:35

and identity and figuring out there

4:38

a lot of of the same elements that pop up here

4:40

with your story so biohack

4:43

listeners you're really going to all

4:45

relative defining, diego diego

4:48

when is the show dropping ones in we expect

4:50

the first episode? comes

4:52

on october 3rd 2022 and

4:54

i'm really excited for people to hear

4:56

it you

4:57

heard it here biohacked

4:59

5:01

Defining Diego

Defining Diego is the story of one Guatemalan adoptee and his mother, a reporter who documented their journey from his earliest steps, as they try to understand how international adoption boomed and busted, and what it all means for families like theirs, with feet in two worlds. When Laurie Stern set out to adopt a baby from Guatemala in 1999, she thought the process would be pretty straightforward. Lots of people were doing it.But the adoption was held up just as she went to Guatemala to get her son, Diego. That began a journey of discovery. What unfolds is the story of why international adoption peaked — and then collapsed — in Guatemala. It is also the story of how Diego, now 24, learned to be a Maya man with deep roots both in his birth village and Minnesota, where he still lives. Now, Diego has questions about his adoption, too — like why tiny Guatemala was such a popular choice for many adoptive parents in the U.S. and Europe in the early 2000s. As one of more than 50,000 Guatemalan adoptees, Diego’s still figuring out what it means to be Guatemalan, American, indigenous Tzutujil, and an adoptee raised by white parents in St. Paul, Minnesota. At its heart, Defining Diego is a deeply personal narrative: of a mother and son grappling with big questions about identity and health, and the meaning of home and family. Using 20+ years of the family’s archive recordings, we hear Diego grow up — and begin his own journey of self-discoveryDefining Diego is part of The Binge - subscribe to listen to all episodes, all at once, ad-free right now.
