Mark Kelly is a retired U.S. Navy captain, astronaut, engineer, and current U.S. Senator representing Arizona. Born on February 21, 1964, in Orange, New Jersey, Kelly graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and later earned a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. As a Navy pilot, he flew 39 combat missions during the Gulf War and logged over 5,000 flight hours in more than 50 aircraft.In 1996, Kelly was selected by NASA as an astronaut and flew four missions aboard the Space Shuttle, serving as commander on two. His final mission was STS-134 in 2011. Kelly became widely known to the public after his wife, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, survived an assassination attempt in 2011. The couple has since become prominent advocates for gun safety through their organization, Giffords.Kelly entered politics in 2020, winning a special election to complete the late John McCain’s Senate term. As a senator, he focuses on issues including national security, veterans’ affairs, space and science policy, and water conservation in Arizona. Known for his pragmatic, data-driven approach, Kelly brings a unique blend of military, scientific, and personal experience to his role in public service.
