This is Jockle podcast number 472 with

0:02

Echo Charles and me Jockle Willing good

0:04

evening echo. Good evening. So we'd been

0:06

in Ramadi for a little over a

0:09

week I would say and we had

0:11

gone a big chunk of guys from

0:13

Tasking to Bruiser we'd gone over to

0:15

Camp Craigdoor which is on the east

0:18

side of Ramadi with the first of

0:20

the 506 Band of Brothers and we're

0:22

planning a big giant operation. a battalion-sized,

0:25

a battalion-sized operation. And we're going to

0:27

be there for a few days planning,

0:29

and then we're going to conduct the

0:31

operation. We're going to go home. But

0:34

we've been over in Kregador for maybe

0:36

like a day or two or something

0:38

like that. And as soon as we

0:41

got there, Camp Kregador was under attack

0:43

all the time through mortars and indirect

0:45

fire, but also the surrounding area, there'd

0:47

be IDs in place, there'd be rockets

0:50

launched at the base. And so as

0:52

soon as we got there. Of course,

0:54

we had a bunch of snipers in

0:56

task in a bruiser, so they have

0:59

towers around the perimeter of Camp Corregidore,

1:01

so we put snipers in the towers.

1:03

And pretty quickly, like couple seal snipers

1:06

killed some insurgents, putting IDs in and

1:08

whatnot. And so I was like the

1:10

first day we were there, first 24

1:12

hours they were there. So now we're

1:15

there and now I'm over talking to

1:17

one of the company commanders, the Charlie

1:19

company commander. This guy gunfighter six took

1:22

as a total pro just he's been

1:24

in Ramadi's been fighting has been leading

1:26

his troops They called him crazy Joe

1:28

is another nickname he had but his

1:31

call sign was gunfighter six I won't

1:33

say his name right now, but Hopefully

1:35

I'll have him on the podcast at

1:38

some point. Just a great guy and

1:40

his his Charlie company. They'd done a

1:42

massive amount of fighting. They'd taken a

1:44

massive amount of casualties and he was

1:47

just a outstanding professional soldier and combat

1:49

leader. And so I'm in with him.

1:51

him and we're

1:53

talking about how this

1:56

big operation is

1:58

going to take place

2:00

and the types

2:03

of things he was

2:05

doing. why I'm saying he's

2:07

so professional was, This was

2:09

before everyone had a helmet

2:11

cam and before everyone had, you

2:13

know, a GoPro on their

2:16

weapon and whatever, he had rigged

2:18

video cameras on his Humvees. or

2:20

at least his Humvee. and so he would

2:22

record every time he'd be out in the

2:24

city, he would record everything. And

2:27

then he'd come back and he'd watch

2:29

it. So, you know, he knew every wall

2:31

and every curb and every building and

2:33

he just would look at them and was

2:35

more familiar with the terrain in order

2:37

to be. as familiar with the terrain

2:39

as possible. And there's a bunch of

2:41

reasons for that. Are people having IEDs there? Is that

2:43

a place where they could build weapons caches? Is that

2:45

somewhere where he could maneuver or could maneuver? So he

2:47

just was that engaged. And

2:49

he understood the mission and his troops knew

2:51

the mission. So that's what we're doing. So I'm

2:53

sitting here with this guy we're in like

2:56

a little quonson hut where his company planning space

2:58

was. And as we're

3:00

in there, We hear like

3:03

a pretty good run of machine gun fire. Um

3:06

And, you know, I'm

3:09

trying to act cool, because I'm

3:11

trying to act cool. You know, you don't want

3:13

to act like a whoa, what the heck was that,

3:15

you know? So I kind of, you know, give

3:17

him a nod and he kind of gives me a

3:19

nod because he's trying to act cool too. know,

3:21

we're like two guys in the military trying to act

3:23

cool. And so then more machine gun fire comes.

3:26

I'm like, oh, okay. That's a lot. And

3:28

I still like and carry on like I'm

3:30

talking like it's no big deal and then all

3:32

of a sudden they're just a

3:34

boom, womb two massive

3:36

explosions which is RPG hits And when as soon

3:38

as the first one goes, you know We

3:40

start running and we go outside and when we

3:42

get outside where this quonset hut was it

3:44

was kind of on the border border was right

3:47

next to one of these towers where you

3:50

know, where we had perimeter security.

3:53

And you know, explosions, we come outside and

3:55

now there's kind of smoke coming out

3:57

of the tower. And

3:59

I look it. Crazy Joe and I said something said

4:01

something like, hey, don't worry about it, man.

4:03

I got snipers up in these towers. up in

4:05

these You know, as if to say, to say dude

4:07

don't worry. worry I this.

4:09

and right as I finished that that

4:12

sentence. of the bottom of the

4:14

bottom of and the And the sniper

4:16

tower was like concrete, kind of

4:18

like concrete pipes that were on

4:20

their side and had and had like

4:22

ladders or whatever stairs built inside

4:24

of it and a little thing

4:26

on the top. But it's thing on

4:28

a big but structure. And right as

4:30

I get done saying, don't worry

4:32

about it, I got snipers in

4:34

the tower. Right as I finished

4:36

that sentence, I got two guys come

4:38

pouring out of the bottom of

4:40

this tower pouring stumbling and stumbling and disheveled

4:42

and One of them, I instantly he's got red

4:44

hair he's got can see he's wearing a can

4:47

see he's know camouflage uniform and I know

4:49

it's one of my guys and I look

4:51

at I know his face of of looks like

4:53

look the look at his face and he kind of is understandable damn

4:55

I'm looking as I Look at

4:57

him, I'm can see as I look at him I can

4:59

see that his his rifle his sniper rifle had

5:01

been blown in half. half. And so

5:03

he had had one, it was dangling

5:06

from around his neck. The two

5:08

halves of halfs of his machine, of his dangling

5:10

around his neck because his weapon

5:12

had just been blown apart by

5:14

an RPG. just been blown apart by an RPG. He

5:17

was lucky to be alive. to be alive. And

5:19

that's And that's exactly what

5:21

had just happened. The happened. The fire to

5:23

get people's heads down. They fired down. at

5:25

this tower. our On those towers they

5:27

had. On those Uh, they had

5:29

basically basically like metal screen. like

5:31

almost like a chain link fence fence to stop RPGs from

5:33

coming in, but it would also detonate the

5:36

RPGs. And so that's exactly what the It detonated

5:38

in front of him and bone his weapon in

5:40

half. it He was lucky to be alive. And

5:42

then less than 24 hours later. his his weapon

5:44

in half he guy. to be alive

5:46

and then less than 24 hours later

5:48

that same guy the middle of

5:51

the of the blue. blue friendly fire

5:53

incident that that wrote about that

5:55

I wrote about wrote ownership extreme ownership

5:57

was in the middle of

5:59

that that he was on the rooftop.

6:01

He had hundreds. of

6:03

50 caliber rounds fired

6:05

at him from a distance of

6:07

about 35 meters. and

6:10

he was actually hit by a in

6:12

the face from one of those 50

6:14

cal rounds. and

6:16

then after that And

6:19

this is a story that Leif wrote about. This same

6:21

guy, Matt, fell probably fell 20

6:23

feet through a roof

6:25

onto his back. in the

6:27

street. and

6:30

he survived all these scenarios and

6:32

many more scenarios throughout his

6:34

throughout the of Ramadi and then

6:36

throughout the rest of his

6:38

career. uh

6:41

well It's

6:43

an honor to have them with us here tonight. sniper

6:45

machine gunner. lpo

6:47

chief senior chief, Frogman, and my

6:49

brother, Matt hasby matt Matt,

6:51

thanks for joining us, man. It's

6:53

a pleasure to be here.

6:55

that was, I will never forget

6:58

that moment, with how cool

7:00

I thought I sounded, and how

7:02

reality I got checked with. You

7:05

and me both. uh Right on.

7:07

All right, before we get into those

7:09

stories, let's talk about let's talk

7:11

about growing up. What was going on?

7:13

Born in no -dak Born in North

7:16

Dakota. uh the great white north is

7:20

a fantastic place to grow up. It's where

7:22

my family's from um born my mom

7:24

was single my dad decided to bounce. I

7:26

have a half sister and consequently about

7:28

the same age as me she probably wouldn't

7:30

have been cool with that either way so

7:33

uh yeah

7:35

he left um

7:38

my mom was an independent person.

7:40

She moved us to Arizona for a while.

7:42

We always kind of bounced back to North

7:44

Dakota. She married my dad, the only dad

7:46

I've ever known when I was two. And

7:49

what'd he do? He was

7:51

in the Air Force. he was a big

7:53

Air Force base in my not North

7:55

Dakota, and so my family's from Minot. He

7:57

came, he was in the Air Force,

7:59

and And I just got out, we decided to

8:01

stay in North Dakota. And yeah, she's a

8:03

good dude. What did he do for 11?

8:06

He, what did he do? Like did he

8:08

was really like a kind of like a

8:10

mechanic. And so he kind of did that

8:12

style of work all the way until he

8:14

retired. He actually ultimately became, before he retired,

8:16

he was the fleet manager at that Air

8:18

Force base. So he ran all the vehicles

8:20

as a civilian. Sure. And it was funny

8:22

because I would talk to him and he

8:24

would talk exactly like every fleet manager we've

8:26

ever had in the Navy where everybody's the

8:28

problem. I would try to like get it

8:30

to him like, you know, it's not that

8:32

big a deal if they do this. car,

8:34

he's like, hey, that's, that's not the procedure.

8:36

And I'm like, oh my gosh, that's why

8:39

they all think that way. Well, I'm unfortunate

8:41

to report to him that you are very

8:43

abusive to vehicles from the Navy for your

8:45

entire career. So we'll get to that later,

8:47

I'm sure. And so then what were you

8:49

like growing up? I, my

8:51

parents worked a lot. So we didn't have like

8:53

a ton of money because they were always working.

8:55

So it gave me a lot of free time.

8:57

So we also didn't have a lot of money

8:59

for babysitters. so when

9:01

I was, I don't know, maybe

9:03

in the first grade we moved to

9:06

Illinois. So my dad's family's from and

9:08

my mom, she was all in. And

9:12

yeah, I was, I was a problem

9:14

because I would get home from school. I'd

9:16

have about two hours by myself. And,

9:18

you know, I do, I got caught one

9:20

time. I was, I was trying to

9:22

start a fire in a bottle in my

9:24

living room. I don't know why. I

9:26

honestly don't know why. You know how you

9:28

have an urge to eat, let's say.

9:30

know what I mean? A human, a human

9:32

has an urge to eat. Or a

9:34

human has a, you get an itch on

9:36

your arm. You know have an urge to

9:38

itch that itch, right? There's

9:41

some people that they have an

9:43

urge to start fires. Like it's, it's

9:45

an actual thing. And I'm sure

9:47

that there must be some kind of

9:49

like instinct to that, right? Because

9:51

to survive as a species, you have

9:53

to have someone that knows how

9:55

to make fire, right? And so apparently

9:57

you had that gene. I

10:00

mean I was the theory was I was

10:02

like also be cool. or put it in this

10:04

bottle I'll be able to like control this

10:06

fire and then my mom came home like little

10:08

caught me in the middle And she's like

10:10

you're making a bomb That heats up that's gonna

10:12

explode and it's gonna be all kinds of

10:14

problems And I'd like to say that was like

10:16

the first time I didn't know She came

10:18

home another time the bushes were on fire in

10:20

front of the building like we lived in

10:22

like it was I was a problem I was

10:24

a real real problem. And how old were

10:26

you for that? I would say I was probably

10:28

around like between like first and

10:31

third grade. So So this And is when

10:33

you were living where outside of Chicago?

10:35

Yeah, I was living outside of Chicago. I

10:37

was getting bussed into this. Sketchy

10:39

school, so I up, I lot

10:41

of disabilities. I say I had ADHD

10:43

was an understatement. You have ADHD

10:45

that has ADHD, it's like ADHD squared.

10:48

Yes, and so Back then it

10:50

was like you were the bad kid,

10:52

so I spent a lot of

10:54

time in the classroom distracting others and

10:56

so you know, your desk is

10:58

facing the wall and so they one

11:00

class that they found of like

11:02

ADHD kids, I had to go was

11:04

like South Chicago, you know, it

11:06

was like. it was. Oh, so

11:08

they identified like a for real, you have

11:10

an issue Oh, yeah send you to a

11:12

special school. Yeah, well, you know, like the

11:14

special classroom, like when you're young and so.

11:16

I want these other kids that had it and It

11:19

was like school of hard

11:21

knocks. I remember my teacher,

11:23

her name was Mrs. A.

11:25

She drove a to school.

11:27

And these And these kids

11:29

were from diverse backgrounds.

11:31

I I think a couple of

11:34

parents were in jail, a couple

11:36

of prostitutes, like stories that growing

11:38

up, I had never realized what

11:40

was going on. And so these

11:42

were some broken individuals at the

11:44

time. And, Yeah, Mrs.

11:46

A, if if you got emotional, you

11:48

cried, she'd kick furniture into you. Like

11:50

Spartan kicked the desk into kids. like

11:52

Like it was great. like Like as

11:54

an adult with children now, that is crazy.

11:56

As a kid, I'm like, wow. she

11:58

must be really mad. My my parents weren't

12:00

like that, but Mrs. A Mrs. A was. And so,

12:02

so, that for a we did that for a

12:04

while, and then my mom decided, hey,

12:06

it was time to up north. back up north.

12:09

you when you you you move back up north and

12:11

no back? Probably was in the in grade. Yeah,

12:13

I remember, I moved back to North Dakota.

12:15

to North Mom wanted to, to I I think

12:17

she realized I had a lot of freedom

12:19

in Illinois, in Illinois, it's probably not the

12:21

best place for me, so not the best moved

12:23

me back to North Dakota me back to North Dakota

12:25

fields and all that other things where

12:27

I had a lot of space. I had a

12:29

to space less things to least to exactly last thing to damage

12:31

it's a more room to room

12:33

to things. so so we moved

12:35

back to North Dakota and that's

12:37

where we were until I

12:39

graduated. I graduated So did you continue down

12:41

the like path? I got I

12:43

got better in in North Dakota, I got

12:45

friends, there's a lot of freedom,

12:48

of what people think, like we

12:50

still ride bikes in the

12:52

winter, like that's how you get to

12:54

places, nothing's close. like because that's how you

12:56

I wouldn't say nothing's close I I

12:58

mean I wouldn't say like I was like

13:00

a great kid But I wasn't bad. more I had a lot

13:02

of fun. I I had a lot of fun.

13:04

around. I was running around. was also that

13:06

kid like my mom would find me

13:08

on my bike on miles out of the

13:10

city out another town in I was too cold

13:12

to ride home. So I'd call her

13:14

to come pick me up. She'd be super

13:16

to come pick But me up. She'd be it was good.

13:18

no, it was good. Things like that. like that.

13:20

was good, good, but. call

13:23

myself call myself a great student,

13:25

because I didn't really like. I don't

13:27

wanna try a lot. And so And

13:29

so learned if I never did

13:31

homework, I would just have to

13:33

ace the final. And and then I would get

13:35

a C. a C. And And once I

13:37

figured that algorithm, it it was over.

13:40

it was over. C's get That's it. That's it.

13:42

Once I figured that out, I

13:44

I was just that out, I was just like, coast

13:46

you into? sports were you into? I was

13:48

young, I into? tried a lot a

13:50

I hated them. it. I was I

13:52

was like in soccer soccer and I... You

13:55

You know, what's funny is I wasn't an aggressive kid.

13:57

kid. Like I I was like super shy,

13:59

wasn't aggressive. if like kids were getting in the mix,

14:01

know, all trying to fight over the ball. I'd like. all

14:03

kind of shy out. over the ball know.

14:05

You just like away and shy about how

14:07

you could set fire you'd shy away and like

14:09

think about how you get set so so what my mom,

14:11

when I was the right grade, she

14:13

put me in grade she put me that's all

14:15

we had in my nut. There's

14:17

nothing else. what we had What year

14:19

is this? There's nothing else anyways. I

14:22

I mean, if this is in is in like the

14:24

Is Is this the 90s? Oh yeah, mid 90s probably?

14:26

there's not a lot going on. Yeah. on.

14:28

Yeah. you can go to Jiu Jitsu

14:30

and MMA and MMA anywhere

14:32

in the country. anywhere in

14:34

the the But in the you're lucky to

14:36

have lucky to have Thai totally, totally. totally, totally,

14:38

and now my hometown, they have Jiu

14:40

have I'm like, I'm like, oh, lucky, lucky, lucky dudes.

14:42

But yeah, so yeah, so I did

14:44

Taekwondo that was like, honestly, it was

14:46

kind of my anchor. That gave

14:48

me a ton of discipline of I

14:51

had really good like Taekwondo instructors

14:53

that like kind of that into me of

14:55

like poured into know, kind of helped me

14:57

of it together a little bit it together

15:00

a wasn't starting fires anymore. starting fires I

15:02

just spent like I just spent I my, I

15:04

got. pretty good, was, I got went a

15:06

lot of went a lot of state tournaments,

15:08

a regional, like my parents would drive

15:10

me around to different my parents would drive me

15:12

around to the deal? Can Can you someone

15:14

in the head in Taekwondo? Let's say say you'd

15:16

say when you're 15 years old,

15:18

at what grade is that sophomore year?

15:20

Sophomore year, you're doing Taekwondo. Yup. Yep. How

15:22

How do you win a tournament? Do

15:24

you kick someone in the head?

15:27

you head? do you make them quit?

15:29

you knock them out? out? No, it's -

15:31

point based, right? points. and you have to

15:33

like, so so you're - you waited on

15:35

your ability to like to pull your punches and

15:37

kicks your you kick and you want to

15:39

like if you can tap them and pull

15:41

it back to like oh if a master tap them and

15:43

he can almost hurt somebody that so he can almost

15:45

hurt good like I got that it was

15:47

pretty good and I remember we were in

15:50

a tournament and I think I was I

15:52

was a I was a new black belt I

15:54

think me ask you this when you would

15:56

do a tournament against the guy belt.

15:58

and you doing that, like

16:00

you're both pulling your punches, did you

16:02

feel like If you won or

16:04

if he won, they would actually, like that

16:06

would translate to, if we got into

16:08

a real fight. that guy

16:10

probably would beat me or if we got

16:13

into a real fight. No, I'd be able

16:15

to beat him I'm saying does it was

16:17

it like translate if you and I were

16:19

taekwondo guys and we were in a taekwondo

16:21

tournament and I beat you. Would you walk

16:23

away like, yeah, that guy, he definitely

16:25

was quicker than me or he had better

16:27

combos than me. Or were you like,

16:29

yeah, but if this was a real fight

16:31

I would kick his ass. Oh, 100%,

16:34

like, yeah. was, I

16:36

remember I beat this kid and then he came back

16:38

and he beat me and he did a weird thing

16:40

where he could hold his leg up and like kick

16:42

it like almost like a machine gun and then he

16:44

would just kind of hop at you. And if you

16:46

did something he could like tap your head or tap

16:48

and so he was really good at this point system. I

16:51

knew in the street, I

16:53

was gonna, I could crush that

16:55

individual. Bad as be in

16:57

the street 13, let's go. What

17:01

about work, did you have to have

17:03

jobs? Yeah, so growing up, my mom,

17:05

she owned a, she owned a bakery.

17:07

And so she made like cookies and

17:09

cookie bouquets and cakes and things like

17:11

that. And so. Cookie bouquets? Yeah. Confirmed,

17:13

Echo Charles, that's a thing? Yeah, yeah.

17:15

Okay, I don't think kinds of bouquets,

17:17

all right. Yeah, yeah. And so I

17:20

worked there I was probably like old enough

17:22

to work and like, so my mom

17:24

and I didn't get along. Like it's not not we didn't get along. She

17:26

has a really good work ethic and when you're a kid

17:30

and she has an idea of what she wants

17:32

you to do and you have a different idea.

17:34

And since I'm not a real employee, I'm like

17:36

her son, I argue or I don't do it

17:38

as well. And so I did that till I

17:40

was like 16 and then I got a job

17:42

at Wendy's. How long did you work at Wendy's

17:44

for? Oh, mean, - Do know, I

17:46

worked at Wendy's, right? No. Oh, yeah. I worked at

17:49

Wendy's. So you and I have a little bit

17:51

of a freak here. Making

17:53

those square patties square patties. Did you

17:55

I work the grill I work the

17:57

grill. That's honestly why I went with

17:59

entry It must be the entry

18:01

level position. position. Yeah, is. It is. And why I

18:03

quit is because I I worked long

18:05

I never got the window got the and

18:07

you're just sitting there sweating over

18:09

this grill. sweating I was like, oh,

18:11

I hate this. I was like, oh, I by

18:13

that time by of time, I'd kind of like,

18:15

time, the I time I. I think I hit Wendy's, I

18:17

knew what I wanted to do, do, so

18:19

I was just killing time. So you knew

18:22

you wanted to go into Navy, you knew

18:24

you you wanted go to you hear about the

18:26

teams? How did you hear about remember it was a

18:28

Christmas, it was a Christmas, my dad got, so dad was a

18:30

big reader, reader, like, big into into Vietnam, always we'd

18:32

always watch some movies, I remember my mom

18:34

was nervous, when I was three, my dad would we'd watch

18:36

Rambo. She's like, I don't

18:38

think that's good. And he's like, oh,

18:40

it's fine He's worked out great, huh?

18:42

out great, huh? But he was way he was way

18:45

into these books. books. And so I

18:47

would, I would. read these things when he

18:49

read these things when he was done. And

18:51

you remember those old, like, like, They're like they're, two

18:53

inches thick. They're like 400 pages. And so

18:55

I'd read those. so I'd read And so one of

18:57

my uncles gave him Rogue Warrior. him I was

18:59

like, And I And so I got ahold of it

19:01

before he did. You know, got a Christmas time it

19:03

I started he was like, oh, I like this.

19:05

And so I started reading it and I

19:07

don't know what tipped my mom off. but

19:09

she didn't like it. like, oh, I way into this

19:11

book. It was I up all my time and

19:14

she's like, it, too much. know what So she mom

19:16

it away from me and I was like, it. I

19:18

old were you? I was like, I don't know

19:20

book came out mom to say she didn't

19:22

I had just got to the teams

19:24

it. when that book came out out. So

19:26

yeah I was probably seventh or

19:28

eighth grade eighth grade. And so I so I

19:30

got my allowance together, whatever money I my

19:32

at my mom's and I went and I went and

19:34

I bought a copy I then I read

19:36

it like in secret and then it was

19:39

over. over. Like I was I was like being able to

19:41

sue. Check. And then you're then you're just you're going to

19:43

school, you're going to school, you're just getting whatever

19:45

grades you can get, C's get degrees. Yep. Nothing nothing

19:47

else mattered in life but wanting to become

19:49

a team guy. That was it. And that's

19:51

like, okay, so I need to graduate, cool, that's

19:53

all I'm gonna do. I don't really like

19:55

school, I don't have a plan school. I it.

19:57

have a plan after it. Did you you go the the a

19:59

recruiter? I'm just like, hey, I want in. Yep, yeah,

20:01

I was in depth. I was in depth at like 17.

20:03

So was that your junior year? Um,

20:06

yeah, like right at the end of my

20:08

junior year. Okay, so you go in there,

20:10

you say I want to be a seal

20:12

and the guy's like, of course, yeah, you're

20:14

going to make a great seal because that's

20:16

what they tell them all. Well, and beyond

20:18

that, I got my buddy to join. Oh,

20:20

really? Yeah, and so both of us, he

20:22

didn't become a seal. But I was like

20:24

of Did he just join the Navy or

20:26

did he want to be a seal too?

20:28

I think he might have wanted to be

20:30

a seal. I don't know. I think I

20:32

was pretty persuasive at the time. And so

20:34

I was like, hey, we'll join together. And

20:36

cause what I got if he joined Navy

20:38

Swetsuit. Oh, and that seemed like a pretty

20:40

sweet deal for me at the time. You

20:42

wrecked that guy's life for a freaking Swetsuit,

20:44

dude. He's one of my best friends of

20:46

this day. Oh, you still talk to him?

20:48

Oh yeah, he did his four years. Honestly,

20:50

I think he romanticizes those four years because

20:52

I remember talking to him at the time

20:54

and he had to like live on the

20:56

ship. I mean, he's a great dude, but

20:58

he's back in North Dakota. He's got a

21:00

great family, but yeah, I got him to

21:02

join the Navy for that Swetsuit. That's

21:05

classic. And then what did you

21:07

do to prepare? So

21:10

every morning, and I almost can't believe I did

21:12

this, I would wake up at 5 .30 and one

21:14

of my buddies would come pick me up. We'd drive

21:16

to the Air Force Base cause I could get

21:19

on cause I was dependent. And

21:21

we'd swim. We'd swim every single morning and I

21:23

would do the 800 yards. And which is funny,

21:25

I didn't do the combat side stroke. I cause

21:27

did the breast stroke. When I went to Bud's,

21:29

I was the only one to do the breast

21:31

stroke, to do the screener. I did that too.

21:33

Yup, I did that too. Cause I hated the

21:35

sight. It would get water in my ear. At

21:37

the time, I went just hated it. And so I

21:39

would do the breast stroke every morning until I

21:41

knew I was good at it. And I would

21:43

run a little bit, but running in North Dakota

21:46

in the winter is almost painful because that's just

21:48

that freezing cold air. So I would do enough.

21:51

And then yeah, I would just, that's kind of what

21:53

I did. Were you doing pull ups, push ups, like

21:55

anything like that? Oh yeah, all the time. Pull ups

21:57

to this day have been my thing since I

21:59

was young. like. I was one of those kids, those know,

22:01

when you're in, know, when you're in like or

22:03

10th grade they do like the pull -up challenge and I was

22:05

always on the board for the school I like I could

22:07

get some of the most for the school

22:09

of like, I could yeah, that was my thing. the

22:11

And then, that, yeah, high school, thing. And then, so you

22:13

graduate high know, so now you're getting ready

22:16

to ship out. you're I was, ready so I

22:18

Yeah, I was, I'm in the delayed entry program

22:20

and I'm just trying to make it,

22:22

like just trying to stay out of trouble.

22:24

I was 18 at the time and

22:26

so. trying to You know, out of trouble. You You

22:28

have a amount of trouble in North

22:30

Dakota of you're 18, in Canada's right across

22:32

the border. when you're 18, age. right across the so

22:34

I'm just, I'm holding it together. age. then

22:36

so I'm think it was like a week

22:38

or two before we get ready to

22:40

deploy. it was like a week I get pulled

22:42

over, get I had a speeding problem. I get

22:44

pulled In North Dakota, when I was

22:46

growing up, In North Dakota, when I was growing up, there's,

22:48

North Dakota right now, it's a ton of oil, now,

22:51

Ton of oil, so we have problems North Dakota

22:53

like any other in but back then there wasn't. like

22:55

any it was just they would get you you or

22:57

everywhere. or And then I wouldn't pay my tickets. Cause

22:59

I was a kid, didn't, I didn't answer. You

23:01

know, I didn't find a mail I would, I'd get

23:03

a speeding ticket and then I'd forget about it. And

23:05

I got pulled over mail and the, get the officer's like,

23:07

Hey, you have a suspended license. I And I was

23:09

like, how is that possible? I like, you have like

23:11

three unpaid speeding tickets. And I was like, like, hey,

23:13

damn. have a suspended so And I like, how I'm

23:15

like, okay, so what happens? He's

23:17

like, I have to arrest you. And

23:19

I was like, unpaid speeding. And I was

23:21

far how far you from leaving? you from leaving?

23:24

I date like, like maybe like like nine

23:26

days. it was And it was close. I was

23:28

like, oh, this is not good. Cause you

23:30

know when you're going in the Navy. So

23:32

before I even, in the so I joined in

23:34

like the I challenge program. So I knew I

23:36

was going to the Like that happened. I

23:38

had to fill out a security form, how

23:40

many times to my tickets. That's already filled out.

23:42

I had to fill And now he's like, we're gonna

23:45

have to arrest you. And I'm like, many

23:47

So arrested, my me. And you know, I go

23:49

to, I go to jail. And I don't

23:51

know for, for my to Dakota. arrest you. I don't

23:53

know if it was scared a scared straight like

23:55

a lot of yelling of yelling fighting it was like

23:57

some crazy stuff going on and I remember

23:59

like like... I'm twic -, Tyquando back, black belt.

24:01

So So I'm like, all right, gotta

24:03

be hard. And they actually didn't put

24:05

me in the cell with the others

24:08

because I was a child, essentially. so

24:11

I remember that didn't know you were a black belt. They

24:14

didn't know the pain that I was bringing.

24:16

And so they're like, hey, do you wanna to

24:18

call man believes on the inside. And

24:22

so they're like, hey, you won't call your parents.

24:24

And I was like, not really. But I remember

24:26

my mom was actually opening up another bakery at

24:28

the time, so my dad was home. And

24:31

my dad was always like, he was like the tough love one.

24:33

And so I knew, I knew what he was going

24:35

to do. He wanted to, I knew he was like,

24:37

we're going to, it's going to be a lesson learned. And

24:39

so I call my dad and he's like, Hey, what's

24:41

up? And I'm like, Hey, I'm in jail. And And

24:44

What's funny is, he didn't seem

24:46

overly surprised. which should have been

24:48

like a red flag for me. And

24:51

he was like, what happened? I was like, I have

24:53

a suspended license. I didn't know it. And he was

24:55

like, okay. so what do they want? I was like,

24:57

well, I'm gonna have to stay in jail. It's like

24:59

a Friday night. So I'm like, I'm gonna gonna stay

25:01

till Monday or you can come bail me out. He's

25:03

like. Why should I come bail

25:05

you out? And I was like, well, cause I

25:07

don't want to be in jail. And he was

25:09

like, why is this my problem? And I'm like,

25:11

well, you can bail. I said this to my

25:13

dad, like, well, you can come or I'm going

25:15

call. my grandpa. you know, and he

25:17

was like, I'll be right there. And because

25:19

my mom wasn't home, I think really where his

25:22

problem lied was my mom. She was gonna

25:24

come home. My grandparents were gonna tell that they

25:26

bailed me out of jail. She was gonna

25:28

ask him why he didn't bail me out of

25:30

jail. So I think he was just saving

25:32

the pain from later. That would have been a

25:34

freaking gut chuck. He said, lesson learned, forget

25:36

about it. Yeah. not dealing with the rap. Yeah.

25:39

I just think he just didn't want deal

25:41

with mom. So my son was in jail and

25:43

you left him there to rot for the

25:45

weekend. 100%. And so he came. he me

25:47

out. And yeah, so.

25:50

and then I still, I almost, you know,

25:52

almost went to boot

25:55

camp. right right before I was going

25:57

to camp. I was in where you leave from

25:59

as far as North Dakota saw I was in

26:01

Dakota North had a buddy in college

26:03

I had a buddy in college, you and whatever university

26:05

is there. And he's like, hey, there's a

26:07

frat party. Do you want to

26:09

go? And I was like, you want to go?

26:11

And was like, yep. And to this frat party.

26:14

party and And another bunch of

26:16

kids drinking, smoking cigarettes. And I'm like,

26:18

hey, this is cool. this is so what

26:20

the cool thing was at this frat

26:22

is they would. would put out the cigarettes on

26:24

their on their arm. And I'm And I'm

26:26

like, that seems like an awesome idea. idea.

26:28

And plus you're tough. tough. Yeah, I'm super

26:30

tough, right? a And blackbell? Like, me. hurt me. And

26:33

so, you there, every smoke in know, and so I have the

26:35

cigarettes. And so I it out the cigarette a

26:37

I put it out of my arm.

26:39

what, you know, I wake up, I a few times. like a

26:41

day or two, I ended up going to, you know, anyway, time to

26:43

you know, I wake up I go into

26:45

medical checks, you're like a day or two, off

26:47

the ended up going to, make sure know, it's

26:50

time to leave, right? So I go, I

26:52

go into medical checks, you're taking your shirt

26:54

off that you're poking at you to make sure

26:56

you're ready that you can show up. that you can

26:58

show up. And he at me, at me and what's this?

27:00

And I was like, oh, I just I burn.

27:02

like, like, that's an open wound. You can't

27:04

go. an I was like, and so And I've

27:06

already said so my mom, I've already like, bye, son. Like,

27:09

Like and so And so I have have to call

27:11

my mom. And I have have to be

27:13

like, hey, hey, I can't go for go. two weeks. So

27:15

another two weeks. pick me up and I

27:17

to come pick me up and I

27:19

have to go home and heal and

27:21

I just weeks of two weeks of sulking. two

27:23

all I did. sulking. And then my buddy,

27:25

so how we, when I got the got the friend

27:27

to join, deal the deal was we got

27:29

to go to to together. together. He went

27:31

by himself. anymore. Not anymore. No, yep. But you got you

27:33

got that I got I got that sweet

27:35

sweatsuit and he had to go to

27:37

to boot camp by himself. Uh, so you leave for

27:39

for boot camp, How was, I can that boot

27:41

camp was quite a shock to your

27:43

system. shock to your camp, boot I almost think

27:45

boot camp was boot camp was worse than worst

27:47

time of my life like I

27:49

remember I got there that

27:51

night. They're like yelling and screaming

27:54

in people's face like yelling and screaming in

27:56

this is not good like did

27:58

I did? so so, you know and

28:00

then Immediately like put all these kids

28:02

into one area into one we're all immediately

28:04

sick And so so just

28:06

stayed sick for the next five weeks.

28:08

weeks And so like so in in formation, you're

28:10

supposed to keep your hands at

28:12

your side. I'm just like at your of

28:14

my face. like snots porn out of my I'm

28:17

not Hey you go to I'm Chicago? did you

28:19

go to it was the only one.

28:21

right, that's Yeah, because that by so the only one

28:23

I do that. And then finally I

28:25

my saving grace was, what my saving grace

28:27

was I my wisdom teeth pulled. pulled

28:29

And so when you get your wisdom your

28:31

you can sleep. people you can Do you get

28:33

isolated? No, you just get to go

28:35

in your Do And in basically it's like, it's

28:37

like two or three days of just

28:40

basically like drugged sleep. like it's so I did

28:42

that, of just unconscious sleep. And so I did

28:44

that went unconscious and emerged. Right And what what a you

28:46

go to? Cause you still had to

28:48

go to, this is back in the

28:50

day we didn't go to A school.

28:52

go to this So I went to, day. Yeah. Yeah.

28:54

So I went to aviation ordinance.

28:56

I put bombs on planes. didn't pick the

28:58

school. I recruiter did. the Cause he was

29:00

like, Hey, what school do you want to

29:02

go to? And I was like, was like, hey,

29:04

be SEAL. So what's the fastest school

29:06

there? to? And I was he was like being Amy Seel. So

29:08

didn't even know what it was. I

29:10

was like, cool, sign me up. How long

29:13

is it? He's like six weeks. I'm

29:15

like, I didn't I'm not going to, I'm not

29:17

going to quit. Like like, back on that,

29:19

that was not a is like, like, six weeks? I

29:21

was talking about this the other day. the

29:23

other day. you actually ran the

29:25

logical. numbers to see

29:27

what see what career path you

29:29

should take. the SEALs Joining the

29:31

SEALs would not compute. if

29:33

you put put into chat GPT, or one

29:35

of those AI those AI can

29:38

say, hey, you said, hey, got special

29:40

forces, Special Forces, got Air Force,

29:42

got Air Force CCT or got SEAL. Which

29:44

one of these? these has has the best

29:46

probability of me having a cool

29:48

life. cool life? SEALs would be be

29:50

the bottom. Because a lot of people

29:53

a lot of people quit and when you quit. you're

29:55

not doing a doing a job that

29:57

you're probably going be that engaged in.

29:59

in. So there's

30:02

not much logic and reason

30:04

behind selecting the SEAL

30:06

teams. unless you're just one of

30:08

those guys. You're that guy. You You're like, like oh,

30:10

the one I'm gonna do it's kind of It's

30:13

kind of strange that it works like that. It's,

30:15

yeah, it's crazy. And it's like

30:17

at your 18 year old mind, how

30:19

much like weight that decision has.

30:21

And when you want like, you see

30:23

these individuals go into buds that

30:25

are kids and then they quit and

30:27

they're like, and then realization hits

30:29

that they're like, oh my God, I'm

30:31

gonna be a gunner's mate on

30:33

a ship. And they're like, I didn't

30:35

even like being a gunner's mate.

30:37

Yeah. And you're like, what a sucks,

30:39

friend. And they still quit. Yeah.

30:42

All right. So you finished that school,

30:44

you showed buds anything that really shocked

30:46

you about when you got there? What

30:48

year is it by the way? 2001. so

30:50

9 -11 hit when I was in eighth

30:52

school. Oh, okay. And so all the

30:54

SEALs are training, we're getting ready, and it's

30:56

gonna be cool. 9 -11 hit, and then

30:58

we're like, oh, this is real. Like, like,

31:00

life's about to get real. Which

31:02

was kind of exciting for us, because now we

31:04

knew, like, as long as we pass Buds, odds

31:07

of us going to war are high. And I

31:09

mean, when you're a SEAL, that's, I mean, that's

31:11

a culmination, right? That's what you're doing. That's what

31:13

you want in life. And so, So yeah,

31:15

we get done, we get to

31:17

San Diego, and honestly, like, like, like,

31:19

what's the prize man versus, buds

31:21

is of chill when you show

31:24

up. Yeah, it is cool. it

31:26

is, bro. You you come into

31:28

San Diego, they drive you to

31:30

the quarter deck, they're like, cool,

31:32

here's your room, it's Friday or

31:34

whatever, you know, we'll muster up

31:36

on Monday, like, they lull you.

31:39

It's a sense of calm before

31:41

the storm. And then that storm

31:43

is hard. That's heavy. You

31:47

see did you do like did they call

31:49

it fourth phase or prep? like what was the

31:51

pre buds for you No, there was there

31:53

was no pre buds. you showed up It was

31:55

it was they had like the pre buds

31:57

was you checking in before first phase So, the

32:00

amount of time you had from first phase is

32:02

until the next class is Okay, started. that's what I

32:04

did too. It was like, yep, you show up

32:06

Okay, I went what they called it

32:08

too. phase. yep, was first phase, second phase, third

32:10

phase I then fourth phase meant called were getting

32:12

ready to start So there's if you phase, you

32:14

showed up three weeks before the class, you you

32:16

got three weeks. If you showed up, I

32:18

guess the most you could have showed up

32:21

ready phase at that time was

32:23

nine weeks long. had, if could up

32:25

up eight weeks prior and

32:27

had eight weeks of. of. fourth

32:29

phase. But that's what it that's

32:31

what it was. every day day was just kind

32:33

of a repeat. know, was like, oh, you

32:35

know, run, swim, run, run, swim, run, PT, do

32:37

do the O -course a little bit. It

32:40

was just like, there wasn't a progression

32:42

or anything. Right now a a much more

32:44

squared away system, you know, where you start

32:46

light squared go through this whole cycle before

32:48

you start light and you're going to

32:50

go through you, it was just, all right, cool. you

32:52

how much time did you have before you in

32:54

up in first phase? I think I had all

32:56

right, Three Three weeks like you said it you said

32:58

it was there's no control the proctor would

33:00

come out and it was just a out and

33:02

it was know now a seal e6 and And on how

33:04

much of a on he was that day

33:06

It was either we were hitting the surf

33:09

or it'd be a run we were like the

33:11

kind of or it day you know like and

33:13

o 'clock they're like hey go off eat and

33:15

walk around the beach, walk into Coronado

33:17

and you're like, this is all right,

33:19

hey go we go eat and walk is good. walk

33:21

So Coronado what class did you class

33:23

up this I started with three life is good.

33:25

239? Yes. 239? So you start in 239.

33:27

Was anything anything hard for

33:30

you in first phase?

33:32

phase? Before how week, let's let's say.

33:34

Honestly, where I kind of

33:36

paid was, was, I was better, but I

33:38

but I still came like... highly immature.

33:40

So like these officers are telling

33:42

me what to do. And do.

33:44

I'm like, what Why do you

33:47

know better than me? do you know better

33:49

than me? And I'm going to save everybody figuring it

33:51

it out. I was raised an

33:53

only child. child so I was

33:55

by myself. And so I had a

33:57

little had a little to to

33:59

authority. And so that was a

34:01

that was a steep

34:04

learning curve bad because I

34:06

was so like shell shocked. it wasn't bad of I

34:08

was so I went, I'm kind of this in all of

34:10

a sudden I went, I'm kind of

34:12

this in shape kid. And then all of

34:14

a sudden I very much wasn't like

34:16

where my weakness was was running. Like I

34:18

was the goon squad guy Like I was the

34:20

phase. guy in Like in boot Like in boot camp. reason

34:22

that I made the screener was I

34:24

failed the run the first time. And when

34:26

I came back, I had a buddy in

34:28

my boot camp class. was a good

34:30

runner it was and he had failed to swim.

34:32

had And I was like, well, you paced

34:34

me. well you pace me so so he me and

34:36

I passed I an with minutes of like

34:38

an out of like an it was like or it out

34:40

of 12. 1130 at a 12 And so I

34:43

got to and that was that was like my years.

34:45

It's weird cause you're built like a

34:47

runner. like a How tall are you? are you? Six-one? Yeah,

34:49

you're like long lean you look You look like you

34:51

should be able to freaking to freaking haul ass.

34:53

by the end of of I was I was top

34:55

10% but showing up up, like I said, in

34:57

North Dakota, it was cold. You didn't run

34:59

a lot. a lot and I also like I don't really

35:02

know how to run. so I was

35:04

in in first I had my roommate

35:06

came from Colorado and he was and

35:08

high like high distance runner. runner. And he

35:10

he would watch me and he's like, your form

35:12

sucks. run He's like, you run like a

35:14

runs, lots of arms, lots of legs. to run

35:16

and so he basically taught me how

35:18

to run distance cut movement down it's like, keep

35:20

your hands down by your waist, he, like him,

35:22

and movement down outside of what going legs

35:24

are running. I And he, ask I credit him

35:26

He got, he made it, he made it, he made it, he I was it, to

35:28

say it, he made it, he made it, he was going to ask

35:30

it, he he make it? he made prediction, he would it be

35:32

made, he made, enough, he got stress fractures the day before

35:34

he made, he made, he made, he made, he made, he he made, he made, out. made,

35:36

And And so he came back, ended up quitting in pre

35:39

I think he just knew too much. But knew so

35:41

anyway, he taught me to run, and that's kind

35:43

of that got me up to speed. that's kind of

35:45

and then you get into, to so the only challenge

35:47

you had was running only then you get into you

35:49

had was running and then that work out?

35:51

Well, no, week running, that that challenge

35:53

I had, before the 50 I had the

35:56

50, the 50 meter underwater. And so I don't

35:58

don't know what it was like I had this.

36:00

block Like I got in, you know, we do the we do the No

36:02

big deal. deal in the 50 I got in and I

36:04

got in, and I made it about 25

36:06

and almost died. And the instructor

36:08

looks at me, I get the he's

36:10

like, Matt, you have possibly the worst

36:12

underwater form I've ever seen. Cause you

36:14

know, do got to do breast stroke but you you

36:16

a drag. I was And I was like trying

36:18

I was trying to do it fast.

36:21

So I was just like like oxygen. and

36:23

so you And so you know, you have a few

36:25

times to try and I'm failing all these times.

36:27

And on the weekends I'm going to the pool pool

36:29

I don't you do the 50 do 50 the Navy at the

36:31

Navy once you pass it out once you these it out, so

36:33

I'm and finally it's the last time. finally it's the

36:35

last time. And I, these three guys get in and

36:38

I just step in front of them. in

36:40

I'm like, I don't care I'm like, You're not

36:42

going to fail me today. you're I don't want

36:44

to see anybody fail. It's not getting in

36:46

my head. So I get down, I do

36:48

my 50. I pass, you know, obviously no

36:50

big deal. 50, was you the transition that you

36:52

did in your head? deal. It was I got, it

36:54

was not moving. It was being, it was

36:56

being comfortable, not moving. You know, not do

36:58

the, you like to glide. It's need glide Yes, you the

37:00

glide. And that was kind of like the

37:02

kind of like that triggered. that triggered and the glide.

37:04

was as deep as possible. as possible And it

37:06

went fine. and And every single dude behind

37:08

me failed. I was like and that's was like that's

37:10

why I like I stepped I stepped in

37:12

front. I'm like, you're not failing in

37:14

front of me today. in front I don't

37:16

want that mental thing. So yeah. So

37:18

then yeah so then Fast forward I get I

37:20

get into Hell week hell week's Hell I'm

37:23

fine, but I'm a skinny dude. And

37:25

so down started to kind of shut

37:27

down where I I would eat, but

37:29

I wouldn't drink. so I would And so

37:31

I would drink water only when I was thirsty,

37:33

but I was so cold I wasn't drinking a

37:35

lot of water. drinking a lot of water and You

37:37

ever heard that when I I started

37:39

like when we do winter stuff type stuff

37:41

people would say, you need

37:43

to drink more water when

37:45

it's cold. And I'm just I'm just like,

37:47

can't not, that can't be true, bro, that

37:49

cannot be true. Cause when it's hot out,

37:51

bro, I drink water like crazy. And when

37:53

it's cold out, I barely drink water. And

37:56

so that's probably what, and I think it's

37:58

just psychological, like you don't feel, you're not. You

38:00

don't feel sweat. You're shivering. You don't feel

38:02

like drinking freaking cold water And

38:04

so maybe that played a role. Oh, a

38:07

hundred percent. And then it does

38:09

things like physiologically inside your body. And

38:11

so I wasn't drinking. And then we

38:13

did the, like the hard sand demo

38:15

pit run where it's like a

38:17

quick run and back. It's not supposed

38:19

to be a hard evolution. was before

38:21

Chow and I was dead last. I

38:23

hadn't been dead. Well, far into the

38:26

hell week is this? This

38:28

was Monday. Also it's

38:30

early in It's early, it's

38:32

early and so it's

38:34

Monday night and I just can't, like

38:36

I can't keep up. Like you're, you're digging. And

38:38

I, you know, like when you dig harder, you

38:40

can run a little faster. Like I physically can't

38:42

do it. And so because I was late, they're

38:44

like, we're going to do it again. Cause of

38:46

Matt, you know? And so they run again and

38:48

now I'm farther behind. And

38:51

they're like, oh, we got a weakness. We

38:53

founds, you know, like he, he can't, you

38:55

know? And so hold. And so we get

38:57

beat as a class. I'm not quitting. And

38:59

so I got pulled aside by an instructor I I and

39:01

got put on the decon showers. And

39:04

he put the boots to me, like I'm

39:06

on the floor. I'm jackhammering. like I'm like,

39:08

you know, I'm I'm like, making deals. God,

39:10

I'm like, God, I'm ready. I'm not gonna

39:12

quit, but if you want take me, it's

39:14

of like, Like, I'm okay with it, Like

39:16

I'm fine. And so I'm not quitting. And

39:18

finally, you know, we go into med checks

39:20

and they're like, hey, check him out Cause

39:22

they're going to, I'm like, I'm gonna get

39:24

more. And I knew something changed as they

39:26

put a blanket on and they give, they

39:28

me in the, the, the Paul socks. And

39:31

then all of a sudden, I went from one quorum

39:33

into three doctors. And I was like... Okay,

39:35

and then all of sudden I started getting food, and then they

39:38

started warming me up, and I instructor pops in, and they're like,

39:40

hey, is he coming back? And they're like. know, he's

39:42

on the first ambulance out. And

39:44

I think my core temp went down

39:46

to like 92 and then my pulse

39:48

ox was in the 80s. And what

39:50

happened was, I got sight summer's induced,

39:52

pulmonary edema and so my lungs were

39:54

filling up. And so one

39:56

of my lungs was like I think like

39:58

almost half full Damn, dude. dude.

40:00

I remember, and And I remember, when I I

40:02

remember when I got to was it was

40:04

funny. I was Cause I was so

40:07

jacked up and I I I was in in the

40:09

ER, and these nurses these nurses were awesome. And, uh,

40:11

me, they were looking at me and they're

40:13

like, what the hell happened to this guy?

40:15

And so, know, I know, like, I know, I with an what,

40:17

like, I just went with an ambulance. There's

40:19

no one there to explain like like, hell, going

40:21

on. going on. And so I get it. And

40:23

they're like, doing the they, they're doing the all over

40:26

and all over again. I am having all

40:28

these doctors are kind of panicking because like the

40:30

things are going wrong. I'm not breathing and I And

40:32

I remember me and come to me and they're like, need

40:34

we need to give you a catheter. I was

40:36

like I I was like, I don't know what that meant. And

40:38

so what would happen is I would keep falling asleep as

40:40

they were talking to me. were talking And so like they're like,

40:42

hey, we're gonna, you know. gonna you know Put a a

40:44

needle in your arm. I'm like, cool, I'd fall asleep

40:46

and they would poke me and I wouldn't notice. and

40:48

And she's like, hey, we're gonna put a catheter

40:50

in. I'm like, cool, and I fell asleep. And then,

40:52

hey We're gonna put a came to put the catheter and I

40:54

woke up, fell asleep scared then sat straight up and I'm

40:56

like, no, no, no, you can't do it. And

40:58

she was like, no, no, you said it was okay.

41:01

I was like, no, I'll do anything. And I

41:03

started like pleading. and I'm I started no No, deals, but I

41:05

was like, do you can't do this. And she's like,

41:07

no, no, it's gonna be fine. And I was

41:09

like, please don't. And I was like, you know, I

41:11

was like, I was like you can't and She was great. This nurse

41:13

is great. great, She of kind of and they put

41:15

it in and it's horrible. It is horrible

41:17

getting a catheter put in. in. never had

41:19

it I've and so it. I still remember this

41:21

day she when she put the catheter

41:23

and after it was in I had my

41:25

head I was sweating and she just

41:28

rubbed my I had my came up to the

41:30

bed and she just rubbed my hair and

41:32

she was just like like you just came up

41:34

to was five-year-old. it was the most she just rubbed

41:36

has ever done to me she I was

41:38

so like unhappy you like this unhappy little

41:40

kid it like the you okay mom like here

41:42

it's fine you're fine to me. And I was like, like,

41:44

So the worst thing was though, I

41:47

spent a week in the week in the

41:49

hospital. knew things were wrong I knew things

41:51

were wrong because like Navy I would have like

41:53

Navy people coming out of and they would like quiz

41:55

me they would like quiz me what happened.

41:57

like like, hey, did this happen during surf torture

41:59

they would used the wrong words, I didn't know who

42:01

they were. And so I'm like, defending butts. Yeah.

42:04

No, no, that didn't have, know, and so

42:06

I'm protecting him. And I remember, and it

42:08

must have been an officer as an adult,

42:11

I know this now. He came in and

42:13

like my little girlfriend was sitting there, sitting

42:15

beside the bed. And he was like, they would

42:17

come in twice, and I'd have to blow into this like mechanism where

42:19

I have to float this ball and kind of work my lungs back

42:21

out. And he's like, so, hey, how do you have to get better?

42:23

And I told him I'd blow in. He's like, so when do you

42:25

do it? And I was like, oh, the nurse. has tells me

42:27

to do it. And he's like, so you wait for

42:29

the nurse to come in And he kind of started

42:31

to grill me on the spot. And I still don't

42:33

know who this guy is to this day, but he

42:35

was like kind of like being kind of a dick.

42:37

And I remember I started sweating. Cause you know, I'm

42:39

in buzz. don't know who that guy is. And my

42:41

girlfriend at the time is like, who is this mofo? And

42:45

anyway, he ends up leaving. And so I, I

42:47

get out of the hospital. I get a ride back,

42:49

you get know, they, no one's there to pick me

42:51

up. So I wait like the duty driver comes

42:53

and picks me up. And the most painful thing I

42:56

duty picks And and was sitting in Bud's Medical and

42:58

the Hell Week class secures. So

43:01

all my friends are done. And I see them and

43:03

they look you know, they look horrible and they're

43:05

all beat up and they're cut up and I'm sitting

43:07

there and they just finished hell week and I

43:09

was... it was so painful

43:11

to like watch those guys.

43:13

And so, yeah, I'll never forget

43:15

that. How long did

43:17

it take you to recover? Did you get rolled

43:19

to one class? got rolled one class. I was one class.

43:21

right, That's not too bad. And it wasn't like.

43:23

Did you recover physically where you were like, all right,

43:26

I can pass runs now. like, yeah, and the medical

43:28

was super cool. They're like, so hey, the odds

43:30

of this happening, they, we went by, they're like, hey,

43:32

how much you drinking? And I was like, I

43:34

don't know. They're like, gauge it. And I was like,

43:36

maybe one cup over like the 36 hours. And

43:38

he's like, oh my God. And they're explaining. is like

43:40

when you're cold, the drink in the water actually like,

43:42

I guess not having water is one of the things

43:44

that like helped it happen. And so

43:46

they're like drinks tons. So when I did the

43:48

next class, I rolled into the next class and that

43:50

was like, life was the OIC. And when I

43:52

was in Hell Week, I drank water like it was

43:55

my job. And

43:57

no factor then next time. Yeah,

43:59

yeah. Got win. went through Week,

44:01

like made it, like, it

44:03

was fine, and, um... And

44:05

yeah, no fact. Oh, I'm sorry. No,

44:07

I made it four zero was my class. and

44:10

then late was four -1, so I hadn't met him yet.

44:12

So I went with 4 -0, no

44:15

factor through Hell first

44:17

phase, fine. and

44:19

we got into second phase. And then

44:21

how did you in second phase? Second

44:24

phase was okay. Like got in, like

44:26

I was fine, but I'd never dove

44:28

from North Dakota. it was never a

44:30

thing in my world. So a outside

44:32

of pool, so I was uncomfortable under

44:34

the water, like especially with diving. So

44:36

when I was in A I actually

44:38

got like my scuba license because I

44:40

thought that would help me. It did

44:42

not. And

44:44

so I was uncomfortable and I

44:46

was doing everything. But

44:48

like with a beet red face, like totally

44:51

uncomfortable, borderline panic. 100%, there was one point

44:53

where when I was doing something and I

44:55

got hit by an instructor and I did

44:57

a full load, like, you know, like when

44:59

you're like, you're about to like frog jump

45:01

up from the bottom of the pool, I

45:03

did a full load and I didn't do

45:05

it, but the instructor punched me in the

45:07

back of my head when I did it,

45:09

like, because I knew not to go up

45:11

because I mean, gonna A -G -E, right? I've

45:14

I a deep breath at depth. If I

45:16

was gonna go up, I'm gonna hurt. And

45:18

so I went panic and I like went to

45:20

the like balls of my feet to like

45:22

crouch. he was like oh this guy is

45:24

gonna skyrocket But I paused and then he

45:26

punches me, you know, and that's what they're

45:28

supposed to do right to like save me

45:30

and And That little interaction He'd never recover

45:33

like he was like hey, you're a huge

45:35

liability. Like did not like me Oh, and

45:37

so he was like he saw me as

45:39

like this liability, right? so could be borderline

45:41

panicker. Yep. So I we do pool comp

45:43

and I'm

45:46

fine, but - He gets

45:48

me. He gets me on the final,

45:50

like, you know. So you failed it a

45:52

couple of times? Um. No.

45:56

Yeah, yeah, yeah, have to give you a

45:58

different instructor. Yeah. And so sure he made sure

46:01

he was don't know if he I don't know if he

46:03

made sure, it. I'm saying it, he was my

46:05

instructor So the last one. So it passed, what was

46:07

it like three or four before the buddy you doing

46:09

the buddy stuff, But all that, You can always but it's

46:11

buddy stuff. You can always blame buddy stuff. else. can You can

46:13

bolt, that on you were gonna bolt, that wasn't during

46:15

you're going you were gonna bolt from the always it

46:17

was during gear exchange Oh, something like that. Yes, it

46:19

no, was right before you're, you're, when they give, they

46:21

give you kind of a, like, what this is

46:23

gonna be like. And so they give you like

46:25

a pseudo pool comp before you do all the

46:27

ditch and don stuff. And that was like the

46:29

bolt moment. you're, you're And so I do the the I

46:31

do all that. It's fine. And then

46:33

I get to the final, I know,

46:35

whatever the final, one was. And he was

46:38

my instructor. one was, and he put the boots

46:40

to me. so do he put

46:42

to this day, I failed,

46:44

right? and honestly to this day, I failed,

46:46

I get So I fail, I, um, whatever, I

46:48

when And into four, one.

46:50

I roll into four one, slave

46:53

C-O-I-C-O-I-C. I think he wished he

46:55

wasn't the OSCE my class, I still would say, because

46:57

you were in it. Yeah, you were in it?

46:59

I would still challenge Lafe, like, and not still challenge I

47:01

would like, hey, not this seems but I would

47:03

stupid, and seems pretty stupid. I'm 18, and be

47:05

my great ideas, know, he was a and with

47:07

my great ideas and he'd time he

47:09

was a mature be like, Matt, you, and Lafe's a really

47:11

time in the Navy. in like, like, like,

47:13

like, And so he would be like,

47:15

like, man, like, like, like, like, like, really like, like,

47:17

calm individual, but I know in my

47:20

life like, have taken him to a

47:22

few of his limits. like, like, and so anyway

47:24

so I we go all the way through to

47:26

pool comp again and go all

47:28

the way through to

47:30

pool comp again. single time that

47:32

instructor is my instructor and single

47:34

time. had He never breaks. but

47:37

he was a one time

47:39

where he had another instructor,

47:41

but he joined him. and this is

47:43

And so I knew this was wrong. a team this

47:45

is, again, it's so the team guys. so the

47:47

teams are letting this happen, but thank thank

47:49

God the the SEA, the E8, and the OIC and

47:51

the OIC out it out towards the

47:53

end. I first I first it all it all

47:55

the way I then I three, like, what is

47:57

it, you get three or get three chances. Yeah.

48:00

So then I failed it twice in a row

48:02

a row. that was like a red flag to

48:04

them. And they're like, Hey, how many times And they're

48:06

like, hey, how many And passed? times has Matt passed? And I, I live, time

48:08

every time. Like I was super comfortable. time. Like I

48:10

was super I'd been under the water. Like we'd

48:12

been hammering each other. Like Like I was good. like

48:14

we'd been And so, like you know, they had the

48:16

big windows under the pool. And so they

48:18

watched. the And so I get, I get my

48:20

final pool comp and he just, he works me

48:22

hard, but I'm ready. I do Like I

48:24

crush it. And so he gives me the He works

48:26

me hard. And so I so a deep deep and I remember

48:28

this whammy knot is you got your dive your dive gear on

48:31

going eventually they're going to give you a

48:33

problem. you They give you all these problems that

48:35

you have to solve have to And eventually they

48:37

give you a problem that you can't solve,

48:39

which is a knot in your gear is a

48:41

knot in your the with the hoses that bring

48:43

air to your mouth. They They give you a

48:45

problem that can't be solved and they call

48:47

it a whammy and they call And it's just

48:49

something you can't undo. And so I look

48:51

at it, I play with it. I've got

48:53

this deep breath and I'm like, this is

48:55

it. look at it, So, you know, you fold up

48:57

it, do it all perfectly. I I get

48:59

to the top, you know, and I'm like,

49:01

like, this or whatever you say. whammy knot, so he's

49:03

like, you fold up my gear, I do I'm

49:05

blown away. And I'm like, to the is

49:07

that possible? and And he was like,

49:09

you didn't try to take a breath. try

49:12

And I was like, a breath. bro. And so

49:14

this is so so I'm is Friday.

49:17

And so I'm like, that's it. You

49:19

know, I dream is over. we remember, chow

49:21

after that and I We went to after that

49:23

I my like, because I was like, cause

49:25

I didn't know who else to call, right?

49:27

right? I'm 18 years old, there's nobody else

49:29

to talk to. nobody else to I'm a kid. Like, yeah.

49:31

I call my mom and I'm like, Hey, I

49:33

think it's done. done. I'm literally fighting back

49:36

tears. Like dream is over. dream is over. And so it gets

49:38

so it gets to Monday. the I go

49:40

to the board and they're like, Matt, here's the

49:42

deal. We've never done this. I've never seen

49:44

this happen. this happen, but we watched you.

49:46

We're not going to We're not gonna roll you. We're not gonna

49:48

roll you. you. We're just to push you forward. push

49:50

you forward. And they're like, and they

49:52

didn't make and they didn't make the

49:54

for the instructor that it's like, be. what's going

49:56

to said, I said, Roger I continue

49:59

training. Damn. training. Jack, good times. Land

50:01

warfare, you roll out, all good,

50:03

San Clemente Island. you roll out,

50:05

all good, you graduate from When you went

50:07

through, did you graduate from big Like

50:09

the big, was the big graduation from

50:11

Buds? the big So you had the

50:13

big ceremony and the big flag and

50:16

all that stuff for graduating from Buds.

50:18

Yeah, Buds. we did Yeah, and then the

50:20

Buds where you got your SQT where you we

50:22

our trident because we got that was the

50:24

private ceremony at the SQT private And they

50:26

give you your the SQT building. And they give you your

50:28

bird. you get done with with they basically

50:30

they you hit the surf, they give

50:33

you a certificate that says you they and

50:35

then you go to SQT. There's no

50:37

ceremony whatsoever. says you it's, you graduate from

50:39

SQT. no And it's a big ceremony

50:41

with the families it's and the big flag and

50:43

all. And you get your bird that it's a

50:45

big Which is. with the than

50:47

it used to be. all that, the big flag

50:49

and all, and you get your bird was

50:52

actually too. Yeah. Which this point. Once I

50:54

got out of used to be. kind of

50:56

figured it out. SQT? Like I grew

50:58

up, I don't know what clicked. Buds

51:00

was a hard run for me. me.

51:02

Like I was immature most of the

51:04

time. most of the time, stories Lave can

51:06

tell you where, like I said, I

51:08

where like the most angry angry ever seen

51:10

Lafe was was when I made him

51:12

angry. And I know I've told I know I've

51:14

told you this before, second phase. phase. And, um...

51:16

Oh yeah, you like somehow took his life took his

51:18

life for his looking for his life jacket.

51:20

100% and I told him I told him I

51:22

didn't have it and then we

51:24

were late and that was the only

51:26

time he's ever ever like, I got got super

51:29

pissed at me, left, so was so

51:31

mad back back to yell at me

51:33

again. Dude, I, well, I remember angry Lafe, dude, I well,

51:35

I remember Lafe's really I mean, like, like, dude,

51:37

like, oh, now, really calm. Like, dude,

51:39

he's calm now. for He, he would,

51:41

he, he would have a temper

51:43

for sure sure for sure that... you you know,

51:45

especially like something goes wrong you know because the know,

51:47

because the thing is life cares about

51:50

stuff, you know? And when you care about

51:52

something doing something that's doing something

51:54

that's counter to what you care about,

51:56

like gonna get get pissed off and

51:58

frustrated and you know know, not nothing crazy. but

52:00

definitely, I you know, I would give him

52:02

shit because, know, I you know, his poker face,

52:04

you know, be talking to the boss or

52:06

something like that. be And the boss would

52:08

say something and maybe you know, maybe it

52:10

wasn't the best idea or something or

52:12

maybe he was gonna negatively like we're gonna

52:14

have to work, I don't know, we it

52:17

for the weekend or something idea or something, make

52:19

sense. And you could see like gonna face

52:21

would just like start going red and

52:23

I'd be like, I walk out start be like,

52:25

bro, your poker face is terrible. He's

52:27

like, or something, or just guy just doesn't make any

52:29

sense. I'm like, I know it doesn't

52:31

but like. Let's figure figure that out outside. So I always

52:33

gave a hard time to a hard You

52:35

know, to this day we joke

52:37

about day we joke about angry Lafe. Yeah, so

52:39

I can imagine. I can imagine

52:41

Angry Lave visiting upon,

52:44

upon, upon upon immature Matt. you

52:46

know? If I was

52:48

gonna talk about Angry Lave,

52:50

I'd have to talk about freaking

52:52

immature Matt, which is definitely

52:54

another character in this whole another

52:57

Yeah, they went whole, hand. old jam. Yeah,

52:59

they went, they awesome. in hand. Freaking awesome. But

53:01

no challenge or anything I ask

53:03

you to SQT? Um, no. Honestly, SQT went fine with

53:05

went fine with the exception of

53:07

one thing. thing. when we did we we

53:09

had like this big big warfare.

53:11

warfare and we did it with a buddy We did

53:13

it with a buddy first. I remember then I you

53:16

mean Land do you mean, Land Nav I'm

53:18

I'm sorry, Land Nav and so we do Land

53:20

Nav and do my buddy I have my buddy good

53:22

I I was pretty good. I picked it up

53:24

pretty quick. and so so just kind kind of followed

53:26

me and I was running it all day and

53:28

it was fine. He, was let me and I

53:30

wanted to and And so it was not a

53:33

big deal. and so it was And then the next

53:35

day was by yourself. day was And so.

53:37

and so And I And I just blew it

53:39

out. Like I it out, like I found

53:41

almost nothing. the whole day the whole day before, like

53:43

I was crushing it, like napping, not using not

53:45

using sometimes, I was into these, and I mean, it's

53:47

literally a stake in the ground, you know,

53:49

a you can't see it, it's a very

53:51

small thing. you can't see you guys in Alaska? very small

53:54

thing. Were you guys in Alaska or

53:56

are you in Laguna? Laguna. Laguna. and

53:58

I must I must found nothing. So they ask

54:00

UT guys are like, oh, we found your

54:02

weakness. Like you're not able to found your And

54:04

I you're not able to land figure it out. I I

54:06

couldn't figure it out And then I remember like,

54:09

he's like go find this point right now now.

54:11

And I find it and it was supposed to be

54:13

like 30 feet away for the life of me. I

54:15

couldn't find it. I was like, Oh my the I did

54:17

it again. Like I can't figure this out. was like, oh

54:19

So the next day comes again. Like I can't figure this out. Final.

54:21

it Like what you you just had like an epiphany. No,

54:23

No, I don't know what happened I I this day.

54:26

I do not know what happened that day I

54:28

don't know if I the declination up on my

54:30

compass Okay, and I I was kind of you know

54:32

a few degrees off in anything anything you know, I

54:34

do my thing I make sure everything's do my thing I

54:36

make I mean my thing I make sure that thing because I

54:38

was like what if I don't find any extra

54:40

time I I was done by like you .m. a few

54:42

Yeah off and no big deal but you they were like,

54:44

well, I guess you figure it out no I was

54:46

like, I do it I don't know deal. I do it I'll

54:48

take it day. I do it like makes me a I to this

54:50

Let's do it it. I do it. So then you end

54:53

up you you end up going

54:55

to Yep. How many guys many guys

54:57

from from your, your like was it

54:59

a pretty good crew of guys

55:01

was it like guys? guys like 10,

55:03

15 think it was like exactly

55:05

like I think 14 or

55:07

15 yeah and did you go

55:09

right into a platoon yep

55:11

I immediately got to team a

55:13

got immediately put in got and

55:15

Charlie platoon at this time the

55:17

crew that you had And Charlie Patoon

55:20

at this time, the crew that you had in there. your

55:22

platoon is a freaking

55:24

epic dude, just an epic

55:26

dude dude and like a maniac like just

55:28

maniac, awesome. In the

55:30

best in the best the best

55:32

positive way, just like a

55:34

maniac, stud athlete, like a

55:36

just a freaking awesome dude.

55:38

just a freaking awesome dude platoon chief your platoon

55:41

chief maniac. And again, I mean

55:43

that in the best possible way. that

55:45

the when you have, way know, so

55:47

when you have in a a platoon, and

55:49

they set them up this way

55:51

on purpose, purpose like you get to, when

55:54

when you're you're platoons at a

55:56

team, you'll be like, oh, I've

55:58

got oh Charles, Echo he's he's wild And

56:00

I'm going to put gonna put him with because cause

56:02

Matt is, you know, straight and narrow and you narrow up.

56:04

you pair them up or like, and you do

56:06

that, and do that with everything like, like, you know,

56:08

you know, really good really good at Land Warfare,

56:10

but Matt's really good at CQC. So we can

56:13

put them together Matt's, or, know, So we put him, so that's

56:15

what you do. You're building like a to Iraq a bunch of

56:17

times like, like, you know, like, deployed to Afghanistan. like, like,

56:19

So like, that's what you do. You're building like

56:21

a like, platoon like, like, there's checks and balances like, like, like,

56:23

like, So you end up with like, like, a

56:25

guy that's a little bit more like, like, like, Let's

56:28

say tight a little, you know, you know, Boy

56:30

Scout right? You want a Boy Scout

56:32

chief? right? You want a Boy Scout chief and

56:34

a Hell's Angel OIC or Boy Scout Boy Scout

56:36

OIC and a Hells Angel. So, so

56:38

you just kind of put it together.

56:41

kind of put it together.

56:43

But you had as freaking

56:45

Hell's Angel, Hell's Angel in

56:47

that how was that so

56:49

into that? Dude, it was. that?

56:51

It was, I mean, and I thought all

56:53

Platoons were like that in the

56:56

very beginning. the I was like, it was

56:58

all throttle, all gas, no break. Yeah. Like it

57:00

was, was, you know, cause the OIC, he

57:02

OIC, he was the first officer

57:04

I I said, full, full sleeves,

57:06

covered in tattoos, tattoos, and any

57:09

officer I'd seen before, I'd

57:11

seen before, the chief was, was he

57:13

was like, kind of of because

57:15

a new guy to a new guy, basically

57:17

their dad, but like, just no holds

57:19

holds was gonna He was either in the back of the head

57:21

in the back of the head or teach

57:24

you how how to do it the right

57:26

way every single time and you'll never forget

57:28

the lesson never again. the lesson ever again. so it was

57:30

honestly it was it was great. And then

57:32

of course, our new guys were

57:34

like, you know you've had Bob Holland on

57:36

here, Holland on here Chris Kyle The new guys,

57:38

the I'm sorry I knew which were absolute yeah

57:40

which were absolute status yeah and they just got

57:42

back from their platoon being a new

57:44

guy and they're like, oh, being a new

57:47

guy and It's like prison, like fresh

57:49

meat. it's like you're there. You're like, oh,

57:51

meat whatever you want. there you're like hoo yaw

57:53

And so want and so yeah it was it

57:55

it it was it was not like a

57:57

fantastic platoon the funny thing is I

58:00

almost got pulled from it, because from it

58:02

because I wasn't supposed to be in to

58:04

apparently. in supposed to be apparently. I was supposed

58:06

to hold in picked me. Z got was

58:08

the of me. Z was the chief. call

58:10

him Z. was the chief. Yes. Z was calling Z. Yeah. He

58:12

was the was the chief and he

58:14

picked me because I was a leadership

58:16

challenge. Like I got good marks good marks from

58:18

Buds, but when Bud, they're like, he's going

58:20

he's gonna argue. So he's like, he

58:22

actually wanted this leadership challenge, but they're

58:24

like, hey, he's squared away, but

58:26

you're gonna have to do some work.

58:28

hey, so he's like, great. away, but going

58:30

to put in more for

58:32

sure. to do some work. And so he's like, great. He's

58:34

going to put in work for me so he picked

58:36

me and They They figured out that we were in

58:38

the wrong the was actually me and a good buddy of mine.

58:40

Still to this day, he's a good friend of mine and they

58:43

were gonna switch us. Still he was like, hey, do you wanna switch?

58:45

a I was like, of like this, they

58:47

were though switch us. And Z, are scary hey, do

58:49

you and Rob are like, I holds

58:51

barred. I was kind of my personality

58:53

already. So I was like, I

58:55

like it here. are scary and he pulled

58:57

me in and that became my barred.

58:59

And what was your job? of my in

59:01

that first platoon. already. So I two jobs. I

59:03

was in the then the air air department. And Air was my

59:05

And air was my primary, was ordinance was

59:07

my secondary. then we And then we got a

59:09

couple other guys then then pick so I had to

59:11

pick. in the So air just got put in the

59:13

air department. the One of the new guys, the

59:16

was the primary he stayed He stayed primary. I

59:18

stayed secondary ordinance. basically all I had to

59:20

do was when I went down there, I

59:22

had to help him with when I went down my

59:24

primary department was air. So my first school

59:26

was where And would you walk in the

59:28

platoon there so my first school was in was you walk in the platoon

59:30

so you're a pig when I got to

59:32

the platoon, I yeah because when I was like, hey,

59:34

to the wanna go to the chief was like hey I

59:36

did I did not want to go to go to college school. And

59:38

I know guy, a and I get it I get it.

59:40

And just there's a reason a wanted to go

59:43

and there's a reason you didn't I know

59:45

And so didn't. I know. And so this also like

59:47

the war was starting to kind of kick

59:49

off and I was like off, radio I don't

59:51

I don't to be by somebody and have them

59:53

use the radio by And so I was

59:55

like use the the And so I do you want to

59:57

go I said the you want me to

59:59

do do, do. And he was like, he was like,

1:00:01

what do you want to do? And I just repeated it again.

1:00:04

And he's like, Matt, you're really making this hard. And I

1:00:06

was like, this hard. And I was you

1:00:08

need, I'll do. you need, I'll he's like, you're going to be

1:00:10

a like, then. I was like. to be a pig under then. I

1:00:12

he give the comm that. one of

1:00:14

the other new guys? Yeah, that

1:00:16

ended up being the guys? guy ended being the

1:00:18

it. Cool Yeah. Got it. Got it. Cool. All right. So

1:00:20

right, so now a workup. How's workup. besides

1:00:22

freaking the rails crazy. And the funny thing

1:00:24

like funny thing like when you do a workup

1:00:27

you you do a like you

1:00:29

realize like. kind of relearning

1:00:31

a kind of so a cycle. So when

1:00:33

we went through training, it wasn't like.

1:00:35

when you Like when you started running trade

1:00:37

at like how like professional turned into into like back

1:00:39

back then there wasn't a lot of

1:00:41

checks and balances. So I remember we

1:00:43

got to our first block, which was

1:00:45

Sauk. which was Salk. So we're running around cities.

1:00:47

cities. And so it's very different when

1:00:49

you're carrying a pig in the city

1:00:51

than when you are at you at land

1:00:53

warfare. And the heavy machine gun, the only

1:00:55

time I'd ever shot one before I was a

1:00:57

heavy machine I was a heavy machine gun I

1:00:59

just did a squt and I just shoot fam

1:01:02

rounds like what 200 rounds? You're like, no So I remember

1:01:04

I get the gun and they're like

1:01:06

cool the gun and so I cool, it up

1:01:08

and I'm like hey, how do I

1:01:10

put this ammo on the gun? I'm

1:01:12

like, hey, no box. put this ammo on the gun? There

1:01:14

was no and I remember Bobby Bobby too,

1:01:16

he was a he gunner, and he

1:01:18

was like, he your box? And I

1:01:20

remember I was like, what's a box?

1:01:22

I remember I was like, what's a box? like, you

1:01:24

don't know? you don't I had no clue

1:01:26

what this box is. And so so

1:01:28

I was like, no. And then I

1:01:31

got I of mad. And this was,

1:01:33

And this This was not great. so so I

1:01:35

remember I got, you got, you know, like do this

1:01:37

have to like do this weird thing

1:01:39

throughout the day where it's kind of

1:01:41

like strung around an arm like Rambo like

1:01:43

links are and links are So we get

1:01:45

done with the day and the the new

1:01:47

guys in, none of the new guys

1:01:49

had in, One guy did guys had a

1:01:51

box and his because guy was, his new guy

1:01:53

was the one who got Bob's one who

1:01:55

got box. There was other ones. was no other now a

1:01:57

was now a was like, he was like

1:01:59

what bring my box. box. And so I so I

1:02:01

was like, great. And so they're kind of laying

1:02:03

into me. And I, and I into of snapped. I'm

1:02:05

like, why the hell would I know? I've

1:02:08

in my the hell would I know? In my 22nd fam

1:02:10

shoot? And you when know when you say

1:02:12

something you to take it back it I

1:02:14

see the fire the the old in

1:02:16

eyes is they were like as spoke

1:02:18

up he spoke up. I was like oh

1:02:20

that like, oh, your first trip trip.

1:02:22

Yeah. very first. Running your sock on sock on your

1:02:24

first ain't gonna go good for a brother.

1:02:26

Yeah. And I and I remember I had about three

1:02:28

had about three people almost inside my

1:02:30

face 10 10 seconds and immediately like back down

1:02:32

down it, paid for it a little bit.

1:02:34

little And then I went about building a

1:02:37

box out of like out of like whatever like

1:02:39

material I could find and then ran

1:02:41

the rest of the trip with it.

1:02:43

Never let that happen again. And every

1:02:45

single trip for the rest of my

1:02:47

career when the new guys are going

1:02:49

out and like, do you have a

1:02:51

box? for the rest so yeah, that

1:02:53

was that was guys were going I'm like you

1:02:56

have a box. And so yeah that any

1:02:58

big challenges that you faced during

1:03:00

CQC or anything like that you

1:03:02

warfare? CQ or anything like that or

1:03:04

was, was good. Like

1:03:06

good. I really enjoyed CQC

1:03:08

kind CQC, kind of clicked like the,

1:03:10

you know, the the geometry of it

1:03:12

going through of it going And I took

1:03:14

it to heart. Like I was that guy, that if

1:03:16

I made a misstep going in the house, when

1:03:19

the day was ended, I would just stay at the

1:03:21

kill house and I would go in times each leg,

1:03:23

going through the front door. Like

1:03:25

I loved it. stay at the

1:03:27

kill house and I would go

1:03:29

100 could run the gun. going

1:03:31

through the As a new

1:03:33

guy, I remember this trip. I

1:03:35

I was, um, You know, we you get new guys,

1:03:38

instructors put a a lot of pressure, put a lot

1:03:40

of stress on them. And I remember I

1:03:42

had this one instructor chasing me around. So

1:03:44

I'm running the around. gun. It's the degrees.

1:03:46

So I'm just keeping it going. I'm

1:03:48

keeping it. And he is on top

1:03:50

of me. it He's like, it, let's get

1:03:52

this going. Get your gun up. And

1:03:54

I just go this go on top. your

1:03:56

gun up, I can't keep it going fast

1:03:58

enough. And he he is... all over me. know

1:04:01

know exactly the person I'm talking

1:04:03

about and he is legendary is legendary

1:04:05

for land And I remember I remember for

1:04:07

like getting in your head. in your

1:04:09

head yeah like get in your head. in

1:04:11

your Part of your is like

1:04:14

him. him yeah if you you can not

1:04:16

fight him does does, but like you

1:04:18

like, you made it, you know? I remember he

1:04:20

was I remember he was I me and

1:04:22

I had 100 rounds left. I And so

1:04:24

I had to put it in my box.

1:04:26

And I remember he's like, get it,

1:04:28

load it up. loaded up And then I just threw it

1:04:30

it out onto the I just took the just took the threw I

1:04:32

just threw it the the range and I looked at

1:04:34

him at I was like, two things are gonna happen. are going

1:04:36

to We're gonna fight. to fight. Or you're gonna stop

1:04:38

yelling at me. I didn't say that, me. I I just knew those

1:04:40

were one of the two things that were gonna happen. the two things

1:04:43

that were going to a miracle, a he walked out, walked out.

1:04:45

picked up my rounds, rounds. He he handed him to

1:04:47

me, he didn't say a word. say a word. And then

1:04:49

he just shifted focus to somebody

1:04:51

else. And I think he's like, to

1:04:53

that one's done. else. And I think he's that

1:04:55

was, and I remember I got back

1:04:57

done. And was like, hey, Matt, come

1:04:59

here. and I I was like, got back and, you

1:05:02

know, the what's up is like, And he's

1:05:04

like, so. And I You can't be be

1:05:06

throwing your rounds up in desert, up, Chief?

1:05:08

Hey, part of our job is being

1:05:10

cool under pressure. They do this on

1:05:12

purpose. And hey, Matt, I say here. dad, he

1:05:14

did a great job. up, they didn't

1:05:16

crush me for that. They were just

1:05:18

like, hey, learning lesson. lesson. Yeah. you're stressed like

1:05:20

that, you don't get to break. And

1:05:22

I was like, hey, check. And I

1:05:24

like, again. And you go. happened again. There you

1:05:26

guys go on deployment? did guys, go in when

1:05:28

we were rotating through. was when we were

1:05:30

your deployment in the Pacific in Iraq. So war, your

1:05:32

then half your deployment in Iraq. half your

1:05:34

the And weird thing is, this is because

1:05:36

everyone thought the war was gonna be over.

1:05:38

We better get everyone to Iraq. We

1:05:40

got the chance to get people to Iraq,

1:05:42

get everyone to Iraq. the war a little

1:05:45

bit of the to be over. Right? Yeah. Because it it

1:05:47

doesn't make sense. sense to be like, be like,

1:05:49

we'll we'll send this platoon for three months

1:05:51

to Iraq, and and then we'll bring a different

1:05:53

platoon for three months. three months. doesn't

1:05:55

make sense. sense. The only way you can only

1:05:57

way you can justify we want we want to get more g-

1:05:59

- - to Iraq so we'll send them there

1:06:01

for three months. for three but that's what

1:06:03

we did. That's what you guys did.

1:06:05

we did. and so you went to, Yeah, and so

1:06:08

we went to Zambawanka, the

1:06:10

old PI, and so we're And so we're on

1:06:12

this buried in in the Philippines. there

1:06:15

ain't in the Philippines there ain't nothing

1:06:17

around and it was all

1:06:19

the snipers all the Iraq, went

1:06:21

to Iraq. And this is

1:06:23

when Fallujah kicked off. reading after reading

1:06:25

And Chris is is in your platoon tune.

1:06:27

Yeah. Chris Kyle, but for those of you

1:06:29

that don't know. So Chris

1:06:31

is in your platoon and he's

1:06:33

one of your snipers. and he's

1:06:35

one of your snipers shit talks the

1:06:37

best of them. the Like, best of

1:06:40

them right up there, dude. dude.

1:06:42

He bring it. bring And so

1:06:44

now he's over there, there

1:06:46

with the other the other the that

1:06:48

you guys have. that you totally.

1:06:50

He's over there. He's just

1:06:52

doing God's work He's we're

1:06:54

just reading all these after -actions

1:06:57

about after-actions and all these

1:06:59

guys and they're just all these

1:07:01

epic battles. It's just like these epic

1:07:03

we're in flusia, it's just And we're

1:07:05

in day and we're just working out every a

1:07:07

hut down by the water. And

1:07:09

I say hut, mean by was

1:07:11

just like, it was surrounded

1:07:13

by chicken wire. was It was

1:07:15

90 degrees by 7 a .m.

1:07:18

like, sucked. so we're, it's like a good time while

1:07:20

you're absolutely where it's

1:07:22

like a good time while you're

1:07:24

absolutely miserable be all you want

1:07:26

in life is to be in

1:07:28

the mix. and And we're reading these

1:07:30

and we're depressed. And did a this

1:07:32

time, the leadership. rotate us up a

1:07:34

good job at like they would rotate

1:07:36

us up to get good we'd say in

1:07:38

a nice hotel, blow good meals we just

1:07:41

like blow off steam. So we weren't

1:07:43

in this do And we'd do about once

1:07:45

a month. They'd keep at least two

1:07:47

guys would rotate together. rotate together. Um, and so yeah,

1:07:49

so yeah, it was, it was long,

1:07:51

but. was just, just

1:07:54

It was, to all it was was

1:07:56

just just to get to Iraq, just

1:07:58

kind of like building up, steaming. Yeah. And

1:08:00

then you get there so then

1:08:02

you you do three months in

1:08:04

the Pacific and then it's boom over

1:08:06

to Iraq And would you guys

1:08:08

go you guys go, Baghdad? Yep, yep, we we rolled

1:08:10

right into Baghdad. And then what

1:08:12

was your what was your mission?

1:08:14

mission? were DAAs, thank the the Lord because

1:08:16

our sister platoon went to do

1:08:18

the PSD mission, mission so they so they

1:08:20

were protecting I don't know whoever

1:08:22

and we got and we got DAs. doesn't

1:08:24

surprise me with who our chief

1:08:26

me with who our chief and who our OIC was. If

1:08:28

not doing the doing the PSD mission, then

1:08:31

again our platoon was our platoon was,

1:08:33

didn't realize this till later like

1:08:35

we were monsters were made

1:08:37

up of like of like... perfect

1:08:39

element of like monsters. Like

1:08:41

there wasn't somebody in the platoon

1:08:44

there wasn't % that was like, um,

1:08:46

you know a question mark.

1:08:48

It was you built this platoon

1:08:50

question wreak havoc. was you And

1:08:52

so yeah, we just, we did

1:08:54

a ton, a ton of so yeah, we

1:08:57

just we did a ton a ton

1:08:59

of DAs was what was on

1:09:01

a DA? job on a D. luckily

1:09:03

right before we deployed, we

1:09:06

deployed I got got the opportunity to skip pre

1:09:08

-deployment leave and go to Breacher go to breach your school.

1:09:10

all the new guys, they're like, the new guys.

1:09:12

you never get a school as a new

1:09:14

guy. at went to as a new school where they

1:09:16

learned how to pack parachutes learn new as my

1:09:18

only school. as a new was my so they're like,

1:09:20

hey, there's these spots there's all four new guys

1:09:23

platoon in our platoon like, we've got four spots we

1:09:25

wants to go to spots who So we all

1:09:27

skipped pre -deployment leave, went to Virginia, went

1:09:29

to Breacher School. And I mean, it was

1:09:31

awesome. But I couldn't think of a better

1:09:33

thing to do during pre -deployment leave than go

1:09:35

play with Explo... Sips for a month. play

1:09:37

with finally got to make bombs. month. Yeah,

1:09:39

you finally got I was like, oh, I'm

1:09:42

in my element and so I

1:09:44

got out there I was a so I

1:09:46

got out I was a new guy

1:09:48

and on our very first very first came

1:09:50

to the like, came to me and he's like,

1:09:52

hey, your lead And I

1:09:54

was like, Hell yeah. pumped were you

1:09:56

dude? freaking I was super pumped and

1:09:58

then super scared. then super- Cuz it wasn't

1:10:00

that I knew I knew like you just

1:10:02

to make a mistake like to make right?

1:10:05

And I had never been right the wire.

1:10:07

I have never seen bad guy land.

1:10:09

I was on I have never seen bad so

1:10:11

now we're going into bad guy land,

1:10:13

never having seen things into I'm about to

1:10:15

be the lead things and I'm about

1:10:17

to be the lead I remember that is

1:10:19

a lot. It is a lot,

1:10:21

right? so. a lot right and so what was

1:10:23

funny about that first time that first time was

1:10:26

it didn't go as planned. was planned so I'm

1:10:28

in in the courtyard. I'm getting

1:10:30

getting ready to put put the explosives

1:10:32

on the door and on the door. climb

1:10:34

over the and we had to climb over

1:10:36

the fence coming the chief was coming over

1:10:38

the fence and fell into the gate.

1:10:40

metal gates, so those like gates. so everything's up.

1:10:42

And so me and And so everything's up. And

1:10:44

so in the courtyard with of the old guys

1:10:46

who was in the courtyard with me,

1:10:49

we look at each other okay, we we're

1:10:51

like, we better get this on. And

1:10:53

so I'm I'm going to put the

1:10:55

strip on the door, on the the door. answers

1:10:57

the door. And then, you know, it's that know, it's

1:10:59

that moment of realization where he looks

1:11:01

at you and you look at him

1:11:03

and you're like, uh uh-oh. And both of

1:11:05

us I think had the exact same

1:11:07

expression same kind of surprise, kind of kind of

1:11:09

like, but kind about to happen. about then

1:11:11

I just. And so then I just him. know, and

1:11:13

I'm in the house now, and then

1:11:16

it turns into a huge and flood

1:11:18

and it's chaos, but. it's chaos, but... It It

1:11:20

went down you know no factor, I do another

1:11:22

do another rage, but yeah, that first

1:11:24

one did not go as planned. had

1:11:26

had it planned out my head and

1:11:28

then I think think I'm wrestling the

1:11:30

guy with explosives in my hand and

1:11:32

to make sure I don't blow myself

1:11:34

up blow was crazy. and crazy good times. the

1:11:36

way it goes way it goes down first off. And

1:11:38

what was your And what was your where you

1:11:40

were you guys every day every day, every

1:11:42

couple of days? Was it pretty

1:11:44

good op -tempo as far as as hits?

1:11:46

hits. It wasn't Ramadi for sure, but

1:11:48

I would I would say two to two to

1:11:50

three times a week. So we were busy

1:11:52

were busy because it was early in

1:11:54

the war. the war. There were lots of targets

1:11:56

and we were chasing everything down. know, you you

1:11:58

remember you get Intel on. somebody, you were there

1:12:00

within hours. and so so we turning and burning and it

1:12:02

were turning and burning. And it was awesome

1:12:05

because I got so much like I was

1:12:07

the gave me He gave me guys would breach guys would

1:12:09

we would but they would, we would do two

1:12:11

to three hits a night sometimes. And so

1:12:13

they would give us a lot of runs

1:12:15

at being being So we got to do

1:12:17

a lot of. to do a lot of hits, of

1:12:19

a lot of lot of blowing and so it just

1:12:21

made us really good. it just made us really good yeah

1:12:23

hell yeah but that was only a three

1:12:25

month period. was time to go home.

1:12:28

period was, it was quick. And so. did

1:12:30

that Did that? to back to

1:12:32

the beach. When? you and your new guy

1:12:34

did you and

1:12:36

your would get called, your little

1:12:38

crew would get called the

1:12:41

sisters kids, your little crew

1:12:43

would get called come kids, right? Did

1:12:45

that come from pick did it pick

1:12:47

up the next next platoon? that

1:12:49

that was that platoon. So So where

1:12:51

we we got that name is

1:12:53

when we were doing a a

1:12:56

workup. And this is where Breacher

1:12:58

School locks in is doing our

1:13:00

doing our final so we

1:13:02

remember we And so locked down on you remember, we

1:13:04

used to get locked down on out in and

1:13:06

this would be a bass out in Southern California.

1:13:08

And it was kind of for the most

1:13:10

part vacant, like. like just a a

1:13:12

bunch of buildings left, left vacant. And so be out

1:13:14

be out there for 10 days, nothing

1:13:16

else to do. And so you just

1:13:18

sit around and this is before like

1:13:21

like cell phones and all that other stuff.

1:13:23

So So like reading a lot of books. lot

1:13:25

of And so we would drive around

1:13:27

this, this empty base essentially, and there

1:13:29

would be like be like old base old buildings.

1:13:31

And so we're like, Hey, what's happening?

1:13:33

they're like, Oh, I think to tear

1:13:35

all this down. And so like, I think they're

1:13:38

going to tear all so down. And so head like,

1:13:40

cool. Let's help the cause. So

1:13:42

one afternoon Yep. get done and we're

1:13:44

bored and we're like, afternoon we Let's

1:13:46

go out and we're bored and we're like, hey,

1:13:48

let's go out practice and

1:13:50

practice breaching. And shockingly enough,

1:13:52

objective point of view, nobody said

1:13:54

anything as as the new guys

1:13:57

got all the breaching equipment, all

1:13:59

the sledge hammers. the Hoolies, the

1:14:01

chainsaws, the Kwikisaws, and we

1:14:03

loaded them up into trucks,

1:14:05

and not trucks, Humvees, And

1:14:07

then we just drove away. like Like,

1:14:10

checks like in the thing is,

1:14:12

I remember the guys watching us and

1:14:14

just being like, yeah, cool, man.

1:14:16

I don't know what's going on. And

1:14:18

then we proceeded to rip the

1:14:20

lid off of that base. And we,

1:14:22

and we, um, I

1:14:25

remember. And

1:14:27

it was like, I think we

1:14:29

breached every single door in a four

1:14:31

block area and know, they have

1:14:33

those like duplexes. And it would be,

1:14:35

we would breach it and then

1:14:37

we'd go inside and then we'd breach

1:14:39

those doors. And then we drove

1:14:41

a Humvee through a sliding glass door

1:14:43

of a building into the living

1:14:45

room. And then we videotaped all of

1:14:47

this by the way. And then

1:14:49

we have a videotape of a toilet

1:14:51

getting thrown out of the second

1:14:53

story window onto the ground. And

1:14:56

then three more times. And then my

1:14:58

face coming out, be like, did you

1:15:00

get that? And just the most damning

1:15:02

evidence. And then they had these old

1:15:04

houses that they hadn't moved away that

1:15:06

were on pillars. And

1:15:08

so geniuses, we took sledge hammers to

1:15:10

those pillars and it knocked those

1:15:12

houses off, which almost crushed us. Inconsequently,

1:15:14

we like jumped out of the

1:15:16

way all on video. And

1:15:19

so and so think, again, we think

1:15:21

we're doing nothing wrong. We're like, hey,

1:15:23

this is old, like nobody cares what

1:15:25

we do here. Yeah, and just to

1:15:27

give you some context. Like, so you

1:15:29

go to these bases that are shut

1:15:31

down and you'll go and do a

1:15:34

hit. on one of these

1:15:36

buildings and you will legitimately breach the

1:15:38

doors, trash the thing, freaking whatever you're

1:15:40

going do. And you know, it's a

1:15:42

house and there's a hundred more of

1:15:44

them. And so in your mind, you're

1:15:46

like, well, yeah, we did this yesterday

1:15:48

to random house. Like, oh, okay, let's

1:15:50

go practice some more. Cause it is,

1:15:52

it is practice. It's also like if

1:15:54

you're freaking Matt Hasby and and you're

1:15:56

a breacher, it's like fun, you know?

1:15:58

That's like, There's something

1:16:00

about breaking glass, like breaking shit,

1:16:03

and you're like, oh, it's

1:16:05

fun. like oh so, technically speaking, it's

1:16:07

I'm just just trying to explain, it's not like

1:16:09

you it's not like you in some like neighborhood you're in

1:16:11

a place where this is what happens. is This

1:16:13

is what happens. what You know, we used

1:16:15

to have it down here by the it

1:16:17

down here by the by in San Diego, those

1:16:20

places that are condemned areas. Well, we used

1:16:22

to go and train in those areas

1:16:24

and we do this exact same thing. If

1:16:26

we can drive we'd through front doors, like

1:16:28

we would do that stuff. And so

1:16:30

is I'm just trying to give you some

1:16:32

context. do that stuff. And so this, I'm just this

1:16:34

is coming from. This is

1:16:36

totally normal. Echo Charles, about like I guess

1:16:38

it wasn't quite as as normal is

1:16:41

you know, you hope it was

1:16:43

because at some point what happened quite as

1:16:45

we learned as, you know, was a was, because

1:16:47

at some point, what of those guys that we

1:16:49

know fix everything up a Navy, who was

1:16:51

pictures of us from like a far?

1:16:53

So there's like these grainy like these

1:16:55

pictures that made its way back while

1:16:58

we were training like the next

1:17:00

day while we were training like the next day and

1:17:02

then it became it became into question,

1:17:04

how dilapidated and how how a

1:17:06

band in these buildings were buildings

1:17:08

were and I know today I know still

1:17:10

they're still so they so they weren't.

1:17:13

I But I think it got pulled into

1:17:15

like, hey, we may have to use these

1:17:17

in the future. the And so then it got

1:17:19

real, real real fast. it went all the And it

1:17:21

went all the way up. It went all

1:17:23

the way to the and And then it was

1:17:25

like, be they wanted They were

1:17:27

going to fire people. fire people and Luckily our

1:17:29

senior enlisted advisor at the time

1:17:31

was the ops master chief of the

1:17:33

team so we had some pull and had

1:17:35

some he's he's freaking good to he's he's

1:17:37

gonna good to go and

1:17:39

he's gonna I mean he's the boys

1:17:42

Yeah, I mean he's legendary

1:17:44

and so of it and gets

1:17:46

in front of it and of

1:17:48

it and At the the time the

1:17:50

chief was our nickname for him was the milkman for

1:17:52

him was the he put his when he'd

1:17:54

put his had I on he looked

1:17:56

exactly like a like a he

1:17:58

was not was not you was

1:18:00

not not like a boy type leader. He

1:18:03

very rule, very rule driven. And so

1:18:05

very rule driven. got like, hey,

1:18:07

we gotta fire all. And first of first

1:18:09

of all, the chief's like, you can't. can't, I mean,

1:18:11

literally clean me out of new guys.

1:18:13

We'll be guys. We'll be Like we'll

1:18:15

have 12 dudes. 12 And so he was

1:18:17

like, like, well, me what happened. He's like,

1:18:19

I sent him on breacher He's like, I got

1:18:21

in front of it and he took the

1:18:23

entire our chief got in Now that's

1:18:25

also not free. he took so, hit.

1:18:28

He saved us, us, we we got

1:18:30

A slap on the wrist, on the

1:18:32

happened. the team

1:18:34

from the team. was not so much inside

1:18:37

the platoon. much And I will

1:18:39

say though, I the next say though, by couple

1:18:41

of black eyes and shaved heads of

1:18:43

black eyes were, we were

1:18:45

training again were training platoon

1:18:47

was tasked to solve

1:18:49

the problem, which they

1:18:51

happily did. which they happily did.

1:18:53

All right, you do you

1:18:55

do that deployment that

1:18:57

you did that you did half

1:18:59

have in PI, half back from

1:19:01

that come then you

1:19:03

roll into roll into second

1:19:05

platoon, sticking with Charlie

1:19:07

Platoon. with Charlie platoon, this is gonna

1:19:09

be now be now tasking a bruiser.

1:19:12

So BTF Tony comes in as

1:19:14

your as your platoon takes over as the

1:19:16

platoon commander. as the I come in

1:19:18

as the task unit I come in as

1:19:20

the task unit commander. You a

1:19:22

bunch of of your. a bunch

1:19:24

of the of the one guys

1:19:26

stayed, including Chris, including Chris

1:19:28

then and then and a a

1:19:30

few others then then all that so

1:19:33

guys, you oh that, the so where'd you you

1:19:35

get the nickname sisters kids because was that, that that

1:19:37

That was the incident? Cause it was

1:19:39

like, you know, when you're like, know, my

1:19:41

sister's kids are always causing problems. Yeah, are always

1:19:43

causing I get that part. And that was,

1:19:45

that was really And that was born. where

1:19:47

that, that incident that kind of became the was

1:19:49

we kind so you had, the was it kids.

1:19:51

three or four of you guys. was four

1:19:53

of us, yeah. there's Four of you guys

1:19:55

that were the you kids. And the sisters that's

1:19:57

kind of how I remember being introduced to

1:19:59

you guys. because your chief became

1:20:01

the SEA for a bruiser and so

1:20:03

then so then I kind of

1:20:05

got the deep on you guys on you

1:20:07

guys freaking great guys, freaking great guys but but

1:20:10

they're you know we you know, we gotta

1:20:12

keep an eye on them and whatnot

1:20:14

and so so that's what happens. So

1:20:16

now you roll in and then

1:20:18

by the way, and then you

1:20:20

get the new guys. you get now your new

1:20:22

guys of which You got Biggles and

1:20:24

you got Johnny Kim, Johnny Kim who you know

1:20:26

talked about on here before, and

1:20:28

then a few other new guys

1:20:30

as well. a few other new guys as well.

1:20:33

So you roll into that, what's

1:20:35

your your impression when the

1:20:37

transition happens? the I

1:20:39

mean, so we were stoked just to not be

1:20:41

new guys. It was a rough go. to not the

1:20:43

thing is I It was a rough turned.

1:20:45

and the thing is in kind we course

1:20:47

we turned in kind of course. Spanked kids, spank kids. And so

1:20:50

I think wasn't super pumped about that. But about

1:20:52

that, but not being the new were just not

1:20:54

being the new guys anymore like

1:20:56

we were like we finally have the

1:20:58

power kind of the thing is was

1:21:00

kind of stolen from us because back

1:21:02

in the day You know you

1:21:04

did your one platoon then most of

1:21:06

those guys left But we kept a

1:21:09

ton of our one who are now who

1:21:11

are now, two platooners. And so we got like

1:21:13

this this that we became these middle

1:21:15

half new guys Wompal tuners where we still had

1:21:17

and Bob and some Bob and some other guys

1:21:19

and we're like, it, it. We thought

1:21:21

we would And the power. still had And so

1:21:23

we always still had under like, we're

1:21:25

always still under somebody's thumb and so

1:21:27

probably a little bitter about that. that. And so

1:21:29

yeah, it was good so stoked. And it was good

1:21:31

end up, We like said, you end up with some checks and

1:21:33

balances then you end up, know, you

1:21:36

got said, you end up with

1:21:38

some checks and balances freaking maniac, freaking maniac,

1:21:40

freaking maniac. maniac, freaking maniac, But then

1:21:42

you know, who's like, you know, he's

1:21:44

You know, he's gonna, he's gonna pull the

1:21:46

in, right? right? the SEA, who's have the then you have

1:21:48

a maniac, but then you have me the

1:21:50

I'm gonna pull the reins you So you

1:21:52

end up with a little bit more checks

1:21:54

and balances, not that, you You

1:21:57

know. was It was always perfect. you

1:21:59

know, you know, there's still are going to

1:22:01

happen, but that's kind of how we

1:22:03

rolled into of how we rolled into the And

1:22:05

then at our first trip was land we

1:22:07

start, we start getting after it. was land

1:22:10

I and we start getting And

1:22:12

it was awesome, like. and it was awesome, like

1:22:14

I said, I said, I, when I I thought we

1:22:16

were monsters in the first one, first nothing.

1:22:18

The second one nothing, the second one

1:22:20

was aggressive. And I remember being

1:22:23

I remember being kind of nervous about Leif

1:22:25

coming in. in. Leif and I had history.

1:22:27

wasn't bad history, but it wasn't like,

1:22:29

you know, like you said, I was like you

1:22:31

know Leif was hot. And so when he

1:22:33

came in, I was like, lathe was hot and so

1:22:35

when he came it was good. oh and uh no it

1:22:37

was it was held the line, man.

1:22:39

was late held the line not mess around.

1:22:41

We weren't allowed to be slow. around

1:22:43

we weren't allowed to be slow

1:22:45

like uh... it was was was it

1:22:47

was rough. I i i i i hadn't I'd I'd

1:22:49

been to sniper school, but they made me a heavy

1:22:52

carry a heavy gun for Land Warfare, and

1:22:54

I did it with absolute and discontent, like Like, I

1:22:56

was pissed. Because I went I went to sniper school,

1:22:58

sniper skills, and I'm like, I I get away

1:23:00

from that from gun. And then they're like, hey,

1:23:02

it's Land Warfare, you're gonna carry a heavy gun.

1:23:04

And I was like, so pissed. But then

1:23:06

I ended up, I ran it well, so I

1:23:08

got put in Life And I was like, and Life

1:23:11

would even talk about it. He'd be like, dude,

1:23:13

you pull away from me when we were

1:23:15

running. And I was Lake's squad. And I was so

1:23:17

goddamn angry. Like, it. that's the only thing that

1:23:19

ran away from me when by hate.

1:23:21

That was it. impressive. I was like,

1:23:23

that so god but angry. Like, that's

1:23:26

was good. thing that ran

1:23:28

that gun. And BTF Tony, who was like born

1:23:30

at Nye Island. Oh man. So he's he's

1:23:32

just like I mean, anyway, he's an

1:23:35

I mean Like he knew

1:23:37

absolute tactician going knew everything that was

1:23:39

going on but he loved a scary

1:23:41

a scary point you know, I

1:23:43

remember you know workup the then and then

1:23:45

those like after work up trips and

1:23:47

all that and he would start planning

1:23:49

them to go to Nile and planning him to

1:23:51

go to Nylen. like oh God. And the greatest training

1:23:53

environment imaginable. True statement. And it is

1:23:56

True It is And it is, right? Right? It is. It is.

1:23:58

It know, this was also early in the

1:24:00

is. lots of money, like we were like, we

1:24:02

wanted to go to Tennessee and Kentucky and

1:24:04

Washington DC and all these like super fun

1:24:06

places. Tony's like, no, the desert. That's where

1:24:08

we need to be. And I was like,

1:24:11

oh, man. So it was, you couldn't learn

1:24:13

from a better person though. Yeah. Yes, when

1:24:15

Johnny Kim showed up. at Nyland is a

1:24:17

first trip and he showed up late because

1:24:19

he was a new guy that you know

1:24:21

you mentioned new guys don't get any schools

1:24:23

and that's totally true except for Johnny Kim

1:24:26

somehow it gets to go to sniper school

1:24:28

and so he shows up late to Nyland

1:24:30

and I remember I just talked to the

1:24:32

chiefs all three of them like hey guys

1:24:34

don't be doing any dumb shit like we

1:24:36

don't know the new guys like if you

1:24:39

have hazing taking place and the new guy

1:24:41

ends up being not you don't want the

1:24:43

guy in the in the team then he

1:24:45

can kind of hold that over you right

1:24:47

so you can put yourself in a precarious

1:24:49

position so we had kind of had that

1:24:52

conversation I'm talking to you like hey guys

1:24:54

like just freaking be professional with these new

1:24:56

guys blah blah blah blah blah blah says

1:24:58

the task of you commander I literally walk

1:25:00

inside because we were out on the range

1:25:02

having that conversation I walk inside and I

1:25:05

think it was Chris actually is like Like,

1:25:07

hey Kim, go meet the commander! And Johnny's

1:25:09

like looking around, has no idea what's going

1:25:11

on, and he's like right there, and he

1:25:13

points at me, and Johnny comes running over,

1:25:15

and I look at him, you know, like,

1:25:17

hey man, nice to meet you, and he

1:25:20

looks back at me, he's like, it's great

1:25:22

to meet you, so you can see you,

1:25:24

I was like. Dude, he looks like a

1:25:26

little shocked right now. And then I look

1:25:28

and like there's hair. There's like hair, like

1:25:30

he's had a hat on, but there's like

1:25:33

hair on his collar. And I go, good,

1:25:35

and I just knew I was like, they

1:25:37

just freaking beat his ass and shaved his

1:25:39

head. And I was like, it's good to

1:25:41

meet you too, dude. Like, welcome aboard. I

1:25:43

was just like, God damn. This is how

1:25:46

it's gonna be. There was no greater sin

1:25:48

that Johnny could. than going to

1:25:50

sniper school school without his input

1:25:52

input to that. he

1:25:54

just got sent and

1:25:56

we came and we're

1:25:59

like, we're you think

1:26:01

you're awesome. you're awesome. you

1:26:03

know, we're all all so,

1:26:05

so, because we went went to

1:26:07

sniper school, but because

1:26:09

they needed needed so

1:26:11

much in Iraq, Iraq, they

1:26:14

made another sniper school.

1:26:16

school. And it it was just like a lot of the lot

1:26:18

of the guys. guys through all the sniper, we went through the we went

1:26:20

through all the had the through the suites, we had the sniper

1:26:22

JP we had the guns it, and we i went through

1:26:24

it and we got a lot of work but we

1:26:26

didn't get any of the love like we were

1:26:28

kind of like through the bastard kids of like that

1:26:30

went through this like, well, you know, we did all school where they're

1:26:32

like well we didn't go through you you know we did pick

1:26:34

we did all that stuff but they're like well

1:26:36

you didn't go through the other we're so we're not

1:26:38

going to know if we're going to count it and

1:26:40

we're like count it, Bro and so so

1:26:42

so so gets the gets deal

1:26:44

and then Johnny with the

1:26:47

real deal the just like

1:26:49

We think that you're

1:26:51

gonna you're coming here gonna

1:26:53

you're know special Kim a

1:26:55

humble guy in which makes

1:26:57

it worse guy too which makes

1:26:59

it worse because you're almost more irritated about

1:27:01

that Because you like that's the way things

1:27:03

work. You know that interested Yeah, so so

1:27:05

we another another thing, you started showing

1:27:07

up, because because I I would would never make

1:27:09

the do Jiu-Jitsu jiu I feel like I you

1:27:11

that's imposing, know, impose the power I don't

1:27:13

impose the but for structure over the boys,

1:27:15

Like if but for officers, I felt

1:27:18

differently. Like, if you're gonna be an

1:27:20

officer and you're in my know, you're

1:27:22

me, you're gonna know how to fight.

1:27:24

so know how you know, like, And so

1:27:26

I, you know, like officers, 0500 at the the

1:27:29

team, out and we're out, in and we're trained

1:27:31

in trained in Jiujitsu. you know, some of

1:27:33

the e heard about that. Of course,

1:27:35

an open invite. So you so out.

1:27:37

What made you, how'd out what made you that

1:27:39

scenario. into that it was it was when Lafe and

1:27:41

Stoner did the at Nyland and I remember And

1:27:43

I remember almost it was almost like

1:27:45

a fight was happening. I remember walking

1:27:47

down the hallway at desert desert training

1:27:49

center and you hear this this crazy

1:27:51

like like it's literally literally like a know and

1:27:54

so in there, you know? And so

1:27:56

you're like, oh, what's going on?

1:27:58

I so gotta get in there. there And

1:28:00

Lafe and Stoner are like in this

1:28:03

almost pseudo unskilled like death battle. Oh,

1:28:05

for sure. And so, yeah. And so

1:28:07

I was like, oh, this is awesome.

1:28:10

And so I saw that and then

1:28:12

like, that was it. Like from then,

1:28:14

like, I, that's when we started training,

1:28:16

like we trained out there, are five

1:28:19

30s in the, the breezeway at team

1:28:21

three. I still remember, I can still

1:28:23

like vividly to this day, like, turn

1:28:26

in the corner. And it always sucked

1:28:28

when you beat us because you'd be

1:28:30

like disappointed. Because you know it's 530,

1:28:33

you're trying to get there, you're making

1:28:35

it, and you of course are up

1:28:37

at like four. And so you're like

1:28:40

standing out in the breezeway waiting for

1:28:42

people. And you like turn the corner

1:28:44

to like see if I can beat

1:28:47

Jaco and you're standing there like, hey.

1:28:49

And you're like, well, glad you showed

1:28:51

up. Finally, I was almost ready to

1:28:54

leave. And you're like, I know, I'm

1:28:56

sorry. Um, no, I, that honestly was

1:28:58

the most fun. Like, there's no, like,

1:29:01

challenges or anything like that. I mean,

1:29:03

you're, once you get done with your

1:29:05

first workup, the second one's gonna be,

1:29:07

should be pretty smooth. Um, there's not

1:29:10

like, oh, I, I made it through

1:29:12

CQC or Land Warfare, and now I'm

1:29:14

not gonna make it. That doesn't happen

1:29:17

very often. No, that honestly was the

1:29:19

most fun. Workup that we had like

1:29:21

that was awesome like awesome. The stories

1:29:24

are still legendary Yeah, and we were

1:29:26

kicking ass too So it's like the

1:29:28

trade-at guys when you're doing good and

1:29:31

you know this from being in trade-at

1:29:33

when it's when the when the troop

1:29:35

is doing good like trade-ets Having a

1:29:38

good time too when the troop is

1:29:40

doing bad trade-ets pissed and everything sucks

1:29:42

and it's like this the whole thing

1:29:45

turns into a nightmare, but when you're

1:29:47

kicking ass and Trade that's freaking stoked

1:29:49

and you're working like you want to

1:29:52

work as harder than trade at once

1:29:54

or like oh, we want to

1:29:56

stay do more and

1:29:59

they're like, okay,

1:30:01

cool. Like. like, Right on,

1:30:03

keep getting after it. on keep it was all good.

1:30:05

It was all good, a good time. it was

1:30:07

all good. It Lots of

1:30:09

chaos. good. A good time. Good

1:30:12

work up. Lots of chaos. Never end.

1:30:14

So we were supposed to

1:30:16

go to go to Baghdad.

1:30:18

And you guys were actually on guys

1:30:20

were actually on pre -deployment

1:30:22

leave, and the was at work

1:30:25

was at work and she was like, hey, I got to talk to you. you.

1:30:27

I I go down there into his

1:30:29

office and he's like, hey,

1:30:31

we're reorganizing Iraq far as

1:30:33

seals go. And we're gonna put

1:30:35

all Iraq in. Iraq in Iraq,

1:30:37

so we're all unified

1:30:40

under one. element and that means

1:30:42

that means you, instead of going

1:30:44

to Baghdad with your with we

1:30:46

want you to go to you

1:30:48

instead. Ramadi instead and I I was like I

1:30:50

was like, you know, trying to act calm, you

1:30:53

know, trying to be like, be like, oh, that sounds

1:30:55

know, like, you know, it's needs to happen. And

1:30:57

inside I was like, what because to you know,

1:30:59

was really bad at the time. And

1:31:01

I figured. know, was Really bad. bad at the is

1:31:03

really good for us to go.

1:31:05

is really good for us to go. And we didn't, we

1:31:07

actually thought the opposite. the We

1:31:10

thought you got got, you got ranked. so

1:31:12

we want, because we thought, thought. If we went

1:31:14

to Baghdad, we're we're supposed to work with

1:31:16

with like one, because the time we had

1:31:18

to take out the take out the with us.

1:31:20

And so we're- so way, the way, I went

1:31:22

on pre assessment. So So

1:31:25

I went. worked with those guys. It

1:31:27

was the ICTF, it with those guys. was

1:31:29

the Terror was the Iraqi the SEA. Force we

1:31:31

went the worked it like up we those we went.

1:31:33

And we went, doing the with those guys

1:31:35

and like started doing the turnover and

1:31:38

started getting all the locked in that it

1:31:40

was really locked in were going. where we

1:31:42

were going. were going. So I cut you off, but

1:31:44

just to let I cut you off but just to

1:31:46

let everyone like that that's what was happening. We

1:31:48

were definitely going there what we thought what we thought

1:31:50

like we were like We're like all We're like all of

1:31:52

these guys operate all the time We had all

1:31:54

the words from our buddies, you know because because

1:31:56

we didn't really know anything about about and obviously we

1:31:58

weren't doing the homework either either Yeah, see did know did

1:32:00

know what was going on in Ramadi. Yeah.

1:32:03

so that's why I was like, I was

1:32:05

like, oh now looking back looking back, we're like, at

1:32:07

the time yeah, we were just like,

1:32:09

yeah, we were we're not going to oh man, we're

1:32:11

not suck. We're not gonna work gonna

1:32:14

then it was very much the opposite. work. much

1:32:16

the opposite. was very much the opposite.

1:32:18

Very much the At some point, at at

1:32:20

what point did you go, at what we're

1:32:22

going to a place that's gonna be good?

1:32:24

Did you, or was that? good. Did

1:32:26

Did you not have that calculation? You're

1:32:29

like, oh, we just got screwed? oh, we just

1:32:31

got screwed. Yeah, yeah, all like the plane, we're like,

1:32:33

this is gonna suck. is We're just suck.

1:32:35

We're it's not gonna be busy. not gonna be

1:32:37

it didn't hit it. We were in

1:32:39

hit we which as you remember, it started

1:32:41

happening real fast. happening real learning curve was

1:32:43

fast that one. Yeah, cause I'm thinking,

1:32:46

cause I know I left. I

1:32:48

know I left don't even know if you guys were back

1:32:50

from leave yet. back from leave yet, but I don't

1:32:52

know how much of a chance I even

1:32:54

had to like brief you guys to like brief

1:32:56

you guys going to hey we're then I left

1:32:58

with and then I left with like a group of

1:33:00

of us left to go start turnover we

1:33:02

had we had no turnover. but But I

1:33:05

was man like knew as soon as the

1:33:07

skipper said that to me, was

1:33:09

like, me I was like oh yeah like it's on. because

1:33:11

the the intel was crazy for Ramadi

1:33:13

at that time. time. Not so Not so

1:33:15

much for the were there, there, even the

1:33:17

SEALs that were there were doing

1:33:19

what they were doing, but just broadly

1:33:21

speaking, it was freaking chaos there. it

1:33:23

was freaking was even, And know, when I

1:33:25

was there in you know, when I was

1:33:27

in Iraq in 2004, when I was in was

1:33:29

kind of like was kind

1:33:31

definitely Fallujah was definitely the worst. And

1:33:34

then and then of its was kind of

1:33:36

its little brother. the Marines But then when

1:33:38

the Marines pushed through cleaned it out, cleaned

1:33:40

it out, before of all, before they a

1:33:42

a lot of those. left to

1:33:44

Ramadi anyways, and then once they had they

1:33:46

had pushed through Felucia. Felucia was much

1:33:49

more settled down and now now became

1:33:51

the freaking, the the of of there. So

1:33:53

I So so knew that and so

1:33:55

I was freaking pumped but I I

1:33:57

didn't do a good job of explaining.

1:34:00

that to you to you guys, which is no, you

1:34:02

know, that's the way it is. way it is.

1:34:04

Yeah, you guys are gone. So we show up there, you

1:34:06

show up there, you show up there.

1:34:08

What do you remember? Like, what was

1:34:10

it like when you, at what point

1:34:12

did you go, when you, at what point did you go,

1:34:14

oh. was, we showed up and we

1:34:16

still think still think suck. it was so

1:34:18

I remember it was actually JP

1:34:20

and I. so it we went

1:34:23

to Corrigidor. JP and I. JP and I

1:34:25

I remember, you got there we're going to

1:34:27

Corrigidor and you still weren't like,

1:34:29

oh, like, oh damn. we went to

1:34:31

Corrigidor to Cregador though within or a day or

1:34:33

we still and the thing is it

1:34:35

may have not I've all been

1:34:37

on you at this point you at this

1:34:39

I'm like, you saying it's bad doesn't equate to it's bad bad

1:34:41

we're equate to it's bad because we're

1:34:43

also getting other seals and they they didn't

1:34:45

work as much. Yeah, and so we're

1:34:47

like guys guys didn't work you know,

1:34:50

you know, it's like, it's going to be great.

1:34:52

we don't believe believe him, up just pumping us up.

1:34:54

so there's a point of a point of

1:34:56

like we have to see it for

1:34:58

ourselves So regardless of if you if you said

1:35:00

it or not by this point

1:35:02

doesn't matter matter. We have have what

1:35:04

we think is going to happen. to happen and I

1:35:06

remember the moment we we like it got of real

1:35:08

of real was We were at were at Corrigodore and and

1:35:10

I were walking around the base the base And we

1:35:12

we went on the roof of this building

1:35:14

and so we were so we around we see

1:35:16

these we see these we're like okay we're like looking

1:35:18

out in the city no big deal out

1:35:20

so city. No big know they used to have those

1:35:22

they used to have I forget what the what the

1:35:24

is with the doorway on top of

1:35:26

the buildings that of there. that were on there

1:35:29

You remember could walk through a door

1:35:31

on a roof, like you wouldn't have to go

1:35:33

down. You would walk through a door and that's

1:35:35

where the stairs were. go down You would walk through a in

1:35:37

the door that's where the right as we did it, we

1:35:39

heard yeah, snap. okay. Yeah that so we walk in

1:35:41

the door And right as we did it we

1:35:43

so then snap And so 22

1:35:45

the that we were, olds that

1:35:48

we back out. step back out then

1:35:50

we wait, and we we back in. back

1:35:52

in snap. snap Now it's a game. So we

1:35:54

would jump jump out, jump back in, then

1:35:56

and then we snap, and then we were

1:35:58

were like, oh, they're acting. It's not like

1:36:00

we're getting stray voltage. There is someone out

1:36:03

there trying to shoot us. And so we're

1:36:05

like jumping in and out of this door,

1:36:07

like making the sniper shoot at us and

1:36:09

just idiots. But that was the moment where

1:36:11

I was like, okay, this may get a

1:36:13

little real. So the tower story that I

1:36:16

told, what was that from your perspective? Oh

1:36:18

man. And so just like you said, like

1:36:20

we get there. Chris was a worker, right?

1:36:22

Chris is like, hey, how can we get

1:36:24

work? So him and life and you, you

1:36:26

all talk to the base leadership and we're

1:36:29

like, how can we help? Can we get

1:36:31

up some snipers in the towers? Or like

1:36:33

totally, so Chris gets up there and maybe

1:36:35

one of the other snipers could have just

1:36:37

been Chris. It was like one or two

1:36:40

kills. And so we're like, oh, cool. Target

1:36:42

rich environment, get some. And it would be

1:36:44

in our spare time. So we were doing.

1:36:46

10 hours to kill. So I go to

1:36:48

the SCA and I'm like, hey, I'm gonna

1:36:50

go up in the tower and I'm just

1:36:53

gonna see if I can get some. And

1:36:55

it's the tower looking down they had they

1:36:57

called it Hell's Alley. It was looking down

1:36:59

the worst alley way. And that's where they

1:37:01

had gotten a couple of guys and I

1:37:03

start talking to these guys. It's probably 30

1:37:06

feet. You climb a ladder to get up

1:37:08

there and I start talking to these two

1:37:10

army guys. I just kind of like seeing

1:37:12

what's going on. And I remember I asked

1:37:14

him, I'm like, hey, you ever get hit

1:37:17

with RPGs up here? And they're like, he's

1:37:19

like, it hits at the bottom of the

1:37:21

tower. And I was like, oh, okay, cool,

1:37:23

cool. And so I'm just like getting atmospherics.

1:37:25

And as I'm talking to him, I'm looking

1:37:27

down Hal's alley, and this dude in black,

1:37:30

and probably three or four or four yards,

1:37:32

steps out, crouches, crouches, crouches, crouches down, and

1:37:34

then runs out, and then runs out of

1:37:36

the alley, runs out of the alley, I

1:37:38

was like, that was weird. And then I

1:37:40

step sideways and right as I did that,

1:37:43

snap, this bullet goes by. And I was

1:37:45

like, oh, you can shoot at me. And

1:37:47

so now like, I'm emotional about this because

1:37:49

I was like, oh, you can I shoot?

1:37:51

to me. Okay, all All right.

1:37:54

Let's let's do this. So

1:37:56

So I get on

1:37:58

my sniper rifle and

1:38:00

I and I means I'm

1:38:02

just looking down my

1:38:04

scope down this alleyway

1:38:07

and I'm like, come

1:38:09

back out. alleyway because

1:38:11

I like I'm gonna arrange

1:38:13

the meeting. I am I'm gonna arrange the

1:38:15

was a classic, a you know.

1:38:17

know look right move left and right,

1:38:19

move left. on my And so as

1:38:22

I'm on my gun, I start

1:38:24

hearing that snap and and I mean

1:38:26

of snaps all of a sudden. all

1:38:28

of sudden it, and it It took me a

1:38:30

a second to be like oh this is us

1:38:32

us. And I remember remember I didn't even have time

1:38:34

to like bend over to get down I

1:38:36

just let my knees buckle. buckle. And

1:38:38

so so I let my knees buckle, I

1:38:41

look up and it was that moment. The

1:38:43

RPG blew my sniper rifle in half. And

1:38:45

so I remember not even hitting the

1:38:47

ground, falling back with like pieces of my

1:38:49

sniper rifle are falling down on me. down

1:38:51

on me. And I'm like, and And so the

1:38:53

tower itself is probably, don't know, I don't,

1:38:56

five feet around and how you get up

1:38:58

is like this three foot wooden door

1:39:00

that you have to lift up to get

1:39:02

down to use the stairs. up to get

1:39:04

but you have to stand up to lift up

1:39:06

that door. There's not enough room to lift it

1:39:08

up, so we're essentially trapped. There's can't get down. room

1:39:10

to lift other, So other one of the

1:39:12

two army guys looks at me and he's

1:39:14

like. get down. And this other, the other chaos two

1:39:17

He's like, Hey, if we take another me

1:39:19

we're dead. Now a Now a whole bunch of

1:39:21

expletives in there, but but that's the the gist

1:39:23

of it. And so I'm And so I'm like,

1:39:25

have we have this crazy situation and I

1:39:27

look at the other army guy. other army

1:39:29

guy eyes are open, his mouth is open, and he's

1:39:31

just staring at the seat. he's just I'm

1:39:33

like, at the ceiling. he's dead. oh no, he's dead.

1:39:35

I was like, we're under under attack. a dead

1:39:37

a dead guy up in this tower

1:39:39

now. at the other So I look at the

1:39:41

other army guy and I'm like, hey,

1:39:44

the tell the other towers to start

1:39:46

shooting. shooting. And And so no no

1:39:48

he's like, show, we need you we need you

1:39:50

guys to show. We need you to shoot right

1:39:52

now. Shoot into know, know, shoot the city at the bad

1:39:54

guys or whatever. the much bad guys or whatever. And And

1:39:56

the calmest dude I've ever heard gets on

1:39:58

the radio and like, I was like, um... We don't see

1:40:00

anything. And I'm like, oh damn it.

1:40:02

So they set the ambush up so

1:40:04

no other tower could see. And they're

1:40:06

not just going to shoot into the

1:40:08

city that you can't do that. And

1:40:11

so what writ in front of the

1:40:13

city, I think, was the Euphrates. And

1:40:15

so I go to- Oh, in front

1:40:17

of the tower, there's a canal. Yes,

1:40:19

it's a canal. It's not, it's not

1:40:21

the Euphrates, but it's a canal. That's

1:40:23

why that, that road was called Canal

1:40:25

Street. And there's like a canal there.

1:40:27

And it was like, one of those

1:40:29

things would be like, sometimes there'd be

1:40:31

water in it, like swampy water at

1:40:33

the bottom. But it would also, the

1:40:35

reason I remember it being dry as

1:40:37

well, because sometimes it would be on

1:40:39

fire. So, so, but yeah, so you're,

1:40:41

you're, you're overlooking overlooking canal. just start

1:40:43

telling him to shoot their guns into

1:40:45

the bank. So he's like, shoot in

1:40:47

the back of the canal, shoot into

1:40:50

the back, you know, it's just like

1:40:52

yelling, and finally, finally. I hear that

1:40:54

sweet, sweet sound of American gunfire, that

1:40:56

do, do, do, do, do, do, do,

1:40:58

do, do, do, do, and all these

1:41:00

pops are like, do, do, do, do,

1:41:02

do, do, do, do, do, and all

1:41:04

these pops are like, nothing, and I'm

1:41:06

like, So I get on him and

1:41:08

I'm like I do what I think

1:41:10

a medic would do and I slap

1:41:12

him in the face as hard as

1:41:14

I can When I do that he

1:41:16

starts to blink and he kind of

1:41:18

comes out of it and I'm like

1:41:20

hey like we got to get the

1:41:22

hell out of here and so we

1:41:24

open the door I grab what like

1:41:26

I grab the sling of my sniper

1:41:29

rifle and we come down that ladder

1:41:31

like it's like we explode out the

1:41:33

bottom. and I still I remember you

1:41:35

walking up to this day because you

1:41:37

were kind of like excited and you're

1:41:39

like hey bro did you get any

1:41:41

and I think I was like hell

1:41:43

no and I was like held up

1:41:45

my rifle and I saw your face

1:41:47

change where you're like oh it was

1:41:49

a little different up there and I

1:41:51

and then the army guy holds up

1:41:53

I don't know if you remember this

1:41:55

he held up his like M4 and

1:41:57

the barrel was

1:41:59

shaped like a like a

1:42:01

sea. And it was, it was, it

1:42:04

had been blown up too. yeah, that

1:42:06

was, that was crazy. And I, and that was, nothing

1:42:08

was crazy. And I I went back up

1:42:10

nothing from those guys an hour I

1:42:12

went back up there probably an

1:42:14

hour later. what They're back up

1:42:16

there. Check on them what and man. hey, you know, them

1:42:18

and say, hey, know, too. meeting you two.

1:42:20

be in I would rather be in the

1:42:22

city any day than be in this There was,

1:42:24

one of the things I one of the things I

1:42:26

remembered you were while you were telling that

1:42:28

story is that that. the weapon that you got

1:42:30

engaged with. with, or at at least one

1:42:32

of the weapons that you got engaged with

1:42:34

you got engaged with, was a DISH, a machine which is, which a

1:42:36

this is a very important part of

1:42:38

the story the story, because that's like a, equivalent of

1:42:41

a 50 caliber machine gun. a 50 And

1:42:43

that's an important part of the story because

1:42:45

you're about to get engaged by a

1:42:47

50 caliber machine gun. about to get

1:42:49

engaged by a 50 forces, which again, I

1:42:51

thought it was like it was like

1:42:53

10 hours later, right? was like was

1:42:55

like next morning we're inserting. Yeah, it was it

1:42:57

was, was like 12 hours. it was it hours, right

1:42:59

on It was right on then, because

1:43:01

that was that late that afternoon and

1:43:04

we were in that crazy that crazy insane

1:43:06

before sunlight came up the

1:43:08

next morning. came up the next morning. Yep. So

1:43:10

that stuff happens, happens. You now we're all

1:43:12

all going out on this operation,

1:43:14

which had been through a bunch

1:43:16

of changes, it's a whole another

1:43:18

story, but now we're going out

1:43:20

on this operation story. But now got, let's

1:43:22

see, we've got an operation element,

1:43:24

we got an element with the

1:43:26

Iraqis, we got two Overwatch positions,

1:43:28

I think it's a total of

1:43:30

four different groups we had out

1:43:32

there. groups we It kicks off pretty

1:43:34

quick, know, there's know, there's like everywhere when

1:43:36

we get out there. everywhere when we get

1:43:38

out there. the midst of all of

1:43:40

all this, your sniper element,

1:43:42

which element, which was it, you it.

1:43:44

in You guys got in your

1:43:47

original spot. you and you

1:43:49

couldn't see the road that you were

1:43:51

supposed to be covering. covering. BTF Tony is like the

1:43:53

commander's intent is you guys make sure

1:43:55

nobody sure nobody recedes on this road. He

1:43:57

gets in there, looks at it, can't

1:43:59

do it. Can't see it, can't see the

1:44:02

whole road, you guys are moving. I

1:44:04

got the call like you're moving, right?

1:44:06

Got like, hey, okay, they're moving, I'm

1:44:09

like, no factor, don't really think too

1:44:11

much about it because there should be

1:44:13

no friendly forces even close to you

1:44:15

guys at this point. According to all

1:44:18

the planning, no friendly forces should be

1:44:20

near you. And so I'm not worried

1:44:22

about like even having to deconflict. Well,

1:44:25

it turns out one of the Iraqi

1:44:27

elements. had decided and didn't tell anybody

1:44:29

that they were gonna push all the

1:44:32

way down to like the limits of

1:44:34

the entire clearance because this is a

1:44:36

big clearance operation was gonna happen. They

1:44:39

were gonna push down to the limits

1:44:41

of that clearance and they were gonna

1:44:43

set up their own overwatch position. Again,

1:44:46

this was not part of any plan.

1:44:48

You know, if they would have briefed

1:44:50

it, it would have been great, but

1:44:53

they didn't. So they just randomly do

1:44:55

this. And a marine, thank God, a

1:44:57

marine goes with them. like they start

1:44:59

running down the street to go set

1:45:02

up this their own perimeter and a

1:45:04

marine goes with them and it just

1:45:06

so happens that the building that they

1:45:09

decide to take is the building that

1:45:11

you guys are in and all this

1:45:13

is happening you know all this is

1:45:16

happening at the same time meanwhile like

1:45:18

we're getting shot at JP and his

1:45:20

elements getting shot at like everyone's engagements

1:45:23

everywhere and then What happens is this

1:45:25

Iraqi friendly Iraqi element you guys are

1:45:27

you guys are just getting into that

1:45:30

building You're just starting to get set

1:45:32

up just assessing it and as that's

1:45:34

happening by the way you have Iraqi

1:45:36

soldiers with you Did you guys have

1:45:39

army guys with you? We had one

1:45:41

army guy with you and and then

1:45:43

you guys and as you guys are

1:45:46

setting up You guys had zip-tied the

1:45:48

freaking perimeter which was like what we

1:45:50

would do is zip tie the entry

1:45:53

ways in there so if someone's gonna

1:45:55

get in it's gonna make noise you

1:45:57

guys I've done that,

1:46:00

and one of our guys is now

1:46:02

down like of our guys is now

1:46:04

down like checking security and he

1:46:06

sees the doors open and then he open. with

1:46:08

an And then he sees a guy with an AK

1:46:10

the across the courtyard and shoots him. Well that was a

1:46:12

friend was a friend, one of these the the

1:46:14

Iraqi rogue element that had gone out there and

1:46:16

was gonna set a perimeter. and Now he

1:46:18

gets shot. Now you guys think you're under

1:46:20

attack. now you guys think you're under attack

1:46:23

and then you guys get into a you

1:46:25

guys get into a firefight with this element

1:46:27

of Iraqi soldiers. soldiers. And I'm just just

1:46:29

trying to set the stage for for

1:46:32

your perspective is, you're on the

1:46:34

freaking rooftop. the freaking rooftop. So we we on

1:46:36

the the was me and I was me and

1:46:38

Johnny Kim. And Johnny went down to

1:46:40

the radio guy to get

1:46:42

something. And And I stayed up

1:46:44

there. there. And so so and I and I, and I

1:46:46

remember to, trying to, we started to take some

1:46:48

like random we knew We knew from the city now we're

1:46:50

so now we're kind of like getting engaged

1:46:52

by bad guys. So we knew that. So we're

1:46:54

trying to set up to set up our. And it's no

1:46:56

big deal. like everyone, you're, when you're going when you're going

1:46:58

out in the city, you're gonna get shot at.

1:47:00

So it's not like, like, hey, we're getting shot

1:47:03

at at. Yeah, like I'm it's like, hey, we're getting shot

1:47:05

at. like, you literally registering a contact, you know, like,

1:47:07

hey, we're in a we're in a contact. in a Roger,

1:47:09

that's kind of the extent of it. Roger, Roger, Yeah,

1:47:11

And we're just gauging it. We're like, hey,

1:47:13

it's not super close. like, hey, I'm very aware. close.

1:47:15

Now that like I know what close fire

1:47:17

is so not worried at all like, I'm like,

1:47:19

so we're looking at how we're going to

1:47:21

set up our sniper at that we shoot

1:47:23

out of and so Johnny goes down we're

1:47:26

and right as he goes down this

1:47:28

element comes in and I see them and

1:47:30

I saw them goes for seconds before the

1:47:32

shot was taken. this I actually stood up because I

1:47:34

was like, in, what are they doing here? And I

1:47:36

was gonna say, I was gonna yell down to what

1:47:38

they were doing here. was And right

1:47:40

as I'm like, you know, I take a

1:47:42

breath to say something, firefight firefight breaks out, is dropped

1:47:44

dropped into the courtyard, and then I just

1:47:46

I just you know, I just like get down.

1:47:48

And then it's just crazy firefight. Nobody knows

1:47:50

I'm there yet. there yet. So it's it's good

1:47:53

for me. So I get on my get on my

1:47:55

sniper rifle, I'm like, okay. I'm like, you know, hey,

1:47:57

bad guys, we we bad got bad guys guys, up

1:47:59

like up like the jun- Like, they're Iraqi military, so.

1:48:01

Yeah, they had helmets, they had

1:48:03

body armor, they had U.S. like

1:48:05

chocolate chip camis, which was the

1:48:07

exact same uniform. We had pictures,

1:48:09

like, we would show, I remember

1:48:11

showing the platoon, like, here's captured

1:48:13

enemy uniforms, it's chocolate chip camis,

1:48:16

it's body armor, it's helmets, they

1:48:18

have everything. And by the way,

1:48:20

the friendly Iraqis, they're carrying RPJs

1:48:22

and AKK-47. Like that's it's every

1:48:24

it can be very it's very

1:48:26

very confusing. Oh and one more

1:48:28

thing it is it is just

1:48:30

like in the morning night vision

1:48:32

isn't quite good but you don't

1:48:34

you can't see anything it's like

1:48:36

the worst possible time of day

1:48:38

where night vision you don't really

1:48:40

have an advantage but without night

1:48:42

vision you can't really see you

1:48:44

see you're just like switching back

1:48:46

and forth like just real quick

1:48:48

as this is happening. Yeah so

1:48:50

I just I just see dudes.

1:48:52

wearing these colors and the firefight

1:48:54

kicks off and I'm like oh

1:48:57

I'm like I can't believe I

1:48:59

was I'm glad nobody shot me

1:49:01

standing so I drop there's a

1:49:03

heavy gunner running down the street

1:49:05

and so I shoot him and

1:49:07

I put one in his chest

1:49:09

and I wear body armor he

1:49:11

may have made out of no

1:49:13

I think he did and right

1:49:15

at the moment they were like

1:49:17

oh there's a sniper on the

1:49:19

roof and then that was so

1:49:21

hold on so as that initial

1:49:23

firefight a more significant firefight. So

1:49:25

now I'm in a Humvee with

1:49:27

the company commander. And now, like

1:49:29

I get a call, I hear

1:49:31

your radio man calling like, hey,

1:49:33

we're under attack, something along those

1:49:35

lines. And they wanted QRF. So

1:49:38

QRF gets launched, I look at

1:49:40

the company commander, hey dude, those

1:49:42

are my boys, go. And he's

1:49:44

like Roger. So the QRF beats

1:49:46

us there by a little bit.

1:49:48

And when they get there, the

1:49:50

element with the one marine, so

1:49:52

the rogue element had now taken

1:49:54

cover in a house. else

1:49:56

door across the

1:49:58

street the next door

1:50:00

is across the

1:50:02

street it wasn't comes

1:50:04

down it was across

1:50:06

the with, I don't know what it

1:50:08

is, two, three with a maybe four humvees. know

1:50:11

what, Parks on the Corner. two, three Humvees,

1:50:13

maybe four Humvees, parks

1:50:15

on the corner the building. where

1:50:18

you are into the building

1:50:20

where you are. And so as I'm

1:50:22

pulling up. so anyways, let me,

1:50:25

you've told me this story before.

1:50:27

before, but. How is it, what

1:50:29

are you thinking when now you're getting lit

1:50:31

up? up with 50 caliber machine

1:50:33

from 35 yards away? And I mean

1:50:35

away. time like I I mean, at the time,

1:50:37

like now I'm no idea cause now I'm

1:50:39

down, I got away from the sniper

1:50:42

hole because that is taking effective rounds

1:50:44

coming through it. And the wall is

1:50:46

starting to degrade. There are pieces, if

1:50:48

I remember the wall right now cause

1:50:50

it's blowing out the and I And I

1:50:52

remember the first bullet that came through

1:50:54

the wall the I'm down. I'm doing and

1:50:56

then to then to my right side, bullet blast

1:50:58

through. And I was like, oh no. no. on my radio

1:51:00

to And so I get on my radio

1:51:02

to tell Tony, I I'm like, him, I'm Tony, you need

1:51:04

to I would, I think I told I'm you

1:51:06

need to call the I'm Like to be I'm

1:51:08

seeing up here, I'm not going to be

1:51:10

around much longer. And And so I was like,

1:51:12

call the QR and right as I'm talking

1:51:14

to Tony, through the one of those hits me the

1:51:17

building and hits me in the face. was like

1:51:19

getting punched, like getting The

1:51:21

feeling was like getting punched. punched me, right was

1:51:23

like somebody punched me my eye, right in

1:51:25

right below my right in the cheekbone. And so

1:51:27

I take it and I'm like, I'm and I was

1:51:29

like, you know what, I'm not dealing with this right

1:51:31

now. dealing So I actually don't touch it. So I And

1:51:33

so I'm still talking to Tony and then this thing

1:51:35

is on fire. to And so then this

1:51:37

into my cheek because it so I bone

1:51:40

and kind of slid down a little bit.

1:51:42

And I reach into my cheek and

1:51:44

I and kind of slid down a little bit. I'll regret this

1:51:46

till the day I die my it. and I pull

1:51:48

this know, round that chaos if I were to

1:51:50

put it in my pocket. till the day I so

1:51:52

I throw it I threw it. I don't know

1:51:54

what round it is, right? round not the time

1:51:56

for forensics. the time for forensics. called I and I'm

1:51:58

like, hey, I'm hit. like, hey, I'm hit. And I'm

1:52:00

no composure, I'm sure I sound absolutely

1:52:02

terrified, because Rex later, the Combs guy,

1:52:04

made fun of me for how I

1:52:06

sounded on the radio. Where I'm like,

1:52:09

I'm hit! I'm hit! And so then

1:52:11

I grabbed, Johnny still had his ruck

1:52:13

sack up top, and I had my

1:52:15

ruck sack, and I moved him both

1:52:17

in front of me to wear that,

1:52:19

because I knew where most of the

1:52:21

fire was coming, so I could have

1:52:24

some standoff. And I was just trying

1:52:26

to survive at this point. And now

1:52:28

they're like, hey, the stairs to get

1:52:30

down were in the front where I'm

1:52:32

getting all the, we're getting all the

1:52:34

fire from. So I'm like trapped, I'm

1:52:36

effectively trapped. And I'm running all the

1:52:39

scenarios to get down to the second

1:52:41

floor, like how much of explosives do

1:52:43

I have in my bag? Can I

1:52:45

blow a hole in the roof? Apparently

1:52:47

at the bottom, they're doing the same.

1:52:49

They're like, how do we get them

1:52:51

down here, can we blow a hole

1:52:54

in the roof? They did call the

1:52:56

heavy so they called now the heavy

1:52:58

QRF so the first QRF that came

1:53:00

in which was Humvees was the was

1:53:02

the light QRF and Then they call

1:53:04

in the heavy QRF and actually that's

1:53:06

Correct my story when the light QRF

1:53:08

went in I was like Roger and

1:53:11

when they called the heavy QRF that's

1:53:13

when I told the company commander was

1:53:15

like hey Let's go with them like

1:53:17

follow them in and company commander was

1:53:19

like cool. That's why the because when

1:53:21

the when the Humvee was shooting We

1:53:23

we showed up we didn't see that

1:53:26

we when we showed up we saw

1:53:28

that tail end of that and What

1:53:30

I saw so now the heavy QRF

1:53:32

is coming which is a section of

1:53:34

tank so two M1 Abrams tanks are

1:53:36

rolling and that's what I rolled in

1:53:38

behind these tanks Okay, so Yeah, I

1:53:41

mean, that's essentially what it was, because

1:53:43

I didn't know anything, like, I remember

1:53:45

I was on the roof and there

1:53:47

was a super low flyover by an

1:53:49

F-18. And in my delusional world at

1:53:51

the time of not knowing anything that's

1:53:53

going on, I'm like, oh good, they've

1:53:56

called somebody that's going to drop bombs

1:53:58

on somebody and stop this chaos. And

1:54:00

I I honestly think it was them

1:54:02

setting up to drop our house. setting up to

1:54:04

drop our house. actually actually the SEA, Z was was like,

1:54:06

we can't drop. Like we don't know

1:54:08

exactly where our guys are, don't drop. our

1:54:10

guys So are, don't call for him. know,

1:54:13

he's like, we cannot drop it. I

1:54:15

think we had, you know, with the drop

1:54:17

we didn't have the JTAC, but whoever

1:54:19

was controlling the the he's like, can't

1:54:21

drop right have the definitely do not drop

1:54:23

because we don't know exactly where our

1:54:25

guys are. can't drop right now. Because, you know,

1:54:27

looking back and we changed this protocol, drop.

1:54:29

It was changed if you're gonna move somewhere,

1:54:32

tell us where you're gonna move. tell

1:54:34

so we know where you're gonna be. gonna it was,

1:54:36

at the time, prior to this, it was,

1:54:38

hey, we're gonna move, we'll tell you where we

1:54:40

are once we get there. this, it was,

1:54:42

we're this is where we're going. Okay, now

1:54:44

we know where you you Otherwise, we are once we

1:54:46

we figured that one out. So. confirmed,

1:54:49

hey, this is where get lit up

1:54:51

with the now we know you That's when.

1:54:53

it could the call for the

1:54:55

heavy Well, we now I'm like that one out.

1:54:58

because these are my guys they're free need

1:55:00

heavy cure F me in there with

1:55:02

the with the to to find out what that was going

1:55:04

on, and help them do whatever I can, them do and

1:55:06

at least I able to assess what's going on. assess what's

1:55:08

going on. Yeah and and that that was the the moment

1:55:10

where, I'm I'm upset I didn't do this,

1:55:12

so you remember we carried we clusters, red

1:55:14

star clusters red blow up for troops in

1:55:17

contact. up the first I never did contact.

1:55:19

I never did it. And it's I I didn't even

1:55:21

even to me to me and know like you know like.

1:55:23

your new yeah the red star was actually actually it It's

1:55:25

like in contact it's like we're friendlies it's like yeah yeah like we're

1:55:27

friendly sees fire and I didn't. And if I

1:55:29

would have known, would have I didn't. And

1:55:31

I was like, I had it up

1:55:33

there and I could have just, you

1:55:35

know, pop that. Because I mean, just you

1:55:37

know pop that is going to be over.

1:55:39

It'd be over for all of us. because

1:55:41

it'd be over it'd whatever they like all of us those

1:55:43

fleshet rounds or so I remember all of a

1:55:45

sudden I saw the red smoke come

1:55:48

up. all of a And I was like, oh,

1:55:50

that's weird. up and I And And then that's

1:55:52

when, you know, they're like, all

1:55:54

the the like like stopped. it wasn't slow,

1:55:56

like the last firefight. It was like

1:55:58

was like done. And I was like, Okay, and

1:56:00

then like, Matt, and it wasn't over the radio

1:56:02

now, I was like, Matt, are you a lot?

1:56:05

And Johnny comes scrambling up to the roof, like,

1:56:07

like, just panic scramble. And he's like, Matt, and

1:56:09

it's funny, he didn't turn the corner, which is

1:56:11

good to him, because by this point, during the

1:56:13

firefight, I'd accepted like, hey, I'm dead. And so

1:56:16

my, my sniper rifle got knocked down, I had

1:56:18

my side arm out, and I made my side

1:56:20

arm out, I made my mental distinction, And if

1:56:22

I can kill three people, I win. And so

1:56:25

I was like, I was looking at the stairs

1:56:27

and like the first three bad guys, I'm gonna

1:56:29

kill, then they're gonna overwhelm me, I'll be dead.

1:56:31

And so I had my hand get out and

1:56:33

I'm like, this is it, I'm coming home. And

1:56:36

Johnny didn't turn the corner, he's like, Matt, I'm

1:56:38

coming home, and Johnny didn't turn the corner, he's

1:56:40

like, Matt, Matt, I'm coming home, and Johnny, Matt,

1:56:42

Matt, Matt, Matt, I'm coming home, Matt, Matt, Matt,

1:56:45

Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, I'm, Matt,

1:56:47

Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt,

1:56:49

Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, I'm, Matt, Matt,

1:56:51

Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt,

1:56:54

and, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt,

1:56:56

And my Rhodesian, my vest, was in like the

1:56:58

other side of the roof. It was still like

1:57:00

20 feet away. And it was this over exaggerated

1:57:02

like, I gotta grab my gear. And Johnny's like,

1:57:05

leave it. And I'm like, no, there's crypto and

1:57:07

calms in it like. If you were on the

1:57:09

street, you're like, what are these dudes freaking out

1:57:11

about? It's just like highly hyped over like dramatic

1:57:14

scene and I run back and I grab the

1:57:16

gear. Still proud of that. In my world, I

1:57:18

got that crypto. And we come down and we

1:57:20

go through the house and I go to where

1:57:23

the family is. And I just kind of look

1:57:25

in on them. And I'll remember, they were more

1:57:27

worried about me. So I'm like, blood's all over

1:57:29

my uniform, my faces covered in blood because I'm

1:57:31

you know got my face pressed against the ground

1:57:34

and they're like they keep pointing they're like okay

1:57:36

and I'm like yeah I'm cool and the most

1:57:38

surreal thing was we got out of the building

1:57:40

and I saw you and I was like this

1:57:43

is weird yeah and I had no idea like

1:57:45

it was and I remember Now that

1:57:47

50 cal gunner won't

1:57:49

look at me and I

1:57:52

remember asking him. I'm

1:57:54

like, hey, bro Was there

1:57:56

a guy in that

1:57:58

corner? That's dead because I

1:58:00

was like did I

1:58:03

get him and he wouldn't

1:58:05

even look at me

1:58:07

like he was like So

1:58:12

So when when I

1:58:14

we get on that, was Farouk

1:58:16

way, I'm pretty sure, is a

1:58:18

long road and... We're hauling

1:58:20

ass and the tanks are out ahead of

1:58:22

us, but we're catching them because we're

1:58:24

going faster. and And then I see red

1:58:26

smoke. I think, I don't know who

1:58:28

in the element. It's Tony. Heath

1:58:30

so Tony BTF Tony through

1:58:32

red smoke, which is freaking

1:58:35

amazing because as I'm looking

1:58:37

I see the... The I

1:58:39

see the red smoke and I was like

1:58:41

okay, and I knew you

1:58:43

guys were close. and And

1:58:45

I see the turret of the tank is turning

1:58:47

towards that building. and it

1:58:49

just turns and it stops and it's like

1:58:52

sitting there. And now I'm there, I

1:58:54

get out. and I go, uh, I

1:58:57

I'll... tell... I

1:58:59

think it was the

1:59:01

I think it was the uh... the

1:59:03

Marine. Marine And I'm like, Hey, what

1:59:05

happened? And he's like, we're entering that building.

1:59:07

There's motion there. So he was like,

1:59:09

there's motion there. who he was talking

1:59:11

about was you guys. He was like, we're in

1:59:14

that building, there's motion one week got shot in

1:59:16

the courtyard. And I

1:59:18

was like, Roger. And I knew,

1:59:20

I just had like the, the

1:59:23

the intuition. Intuition

1:59:26

I was like, here, I looked and I was like,

1:59:28

at the building where you guys were planning to

1:59:30

be. And I was looking where this building was. And

1:59:32

I knew that you moved. And I was like,

1:59:34

this does not make sense. And as I walked over

1:59:36

and I was like, on me and I was

1:59:38

like, cool. And so I'm just going to go, and

1:59:40

those that looked at me like I was totally

1:59:42

insane. Cause like I'm going to go clear it with

1:59:44

my sea That's what's about to go down. And

1:59:46

so I'm walking over to I got I got gun

1:59:48

up and I'm just like walking over to clear

1:59:50

the building. If there's Motion they're cool. Kill them in

1:59:53

not, which I didn't think there was. And as

1:59:55

I'm walking up the doors cracked open. and and

1:59:57

I see that there's a zip tie on

1:59:59

the ground. and I was

2:00:01

like, I you know, you're just putting

2:00:03

things together. I kicked the door open

2:00:06

and there's Tony. And

2:00:08

he looked at me and he's like, he's like,

2:00:10

dude. And

2:00:12

I'm like, Hey And he looks at me, he goes, and

2:00:15

I just looked at him and I said, it was a

2:00:17

blue on blue. And he looked

2:00:19

at me like like

2:00:21

I was crazy. Like, There's

2:00:23

no way. And

2:00:25

I was like, hey, get the boys. Cause now

2:00:27

we had Kazovac there. And I was like, hey,

2:00:29

get the boys loaded up. And he the BTF

2:00:31

Tony salute. He's like. I go

2:00:33

get the boys load up, get out

2:00:35

of here. And, And he's like, Roger,

2:00:37

I'm staying. And I was like, cool.

2:00:39

So he loaded you guys up and

2:00:41

he just stayed with me cause he

2:00:44

wasn't gonna leave. But dude, you guys

2:00:46

looked fucking horrified. It was, I felt,

2:00:48

I was like, oh my I mean.

2:00:50

you know, you guys just got

2:00:52

lit up at close range with

2:00:55

like 150 rounds of 50

2:00:57

kills, freaking awful. I walk. now

2:01:00

I walk back across the street

2:01:02

I go upstairs and there's the

2:01:04

company commander. and he just

2:01:06

looks at me and I'm like, hey, was a

2:01:08

blue on blue. Those were my guys in there.

2:01:10

he was like, what the fuck? And I go, yup.

2:01:13

I'm like, check, uh, we got it secured, whatever.

2:01:15

And we kind of carried on. And then

2:01:17

I went. you know, as soon

2:01:19

as we got done with that portion

2:01:21

of clearance, went back, went into battalion

2:01:23

commander. And there's still

2:01:25

a lot of confusion. And I walked up and he

2:01:27

was like, what happened? I was like, and I, I

2:01:29

like was the only person that like knew what had

2:01:31

happened, you know? I was like, here's what happened. Here's

2:01:33

where my guys moved. Here's where these Iraqis. I moved. don't

2:01:35

know why they were down there, but here's where they

2:01:37

were. They entered that building and this was a blue

2:01:39

on blue. And he was like, Roger

2:01:42

that, it like made, you know, he

2:01:44

understood what had happened. And another thing that

2:01:46

I didn't really understand at the time

2:01:48

was like, there was blue on blues happening.

2:01:52

There was blue -on -blue incidents

2:01:54

happening. Maybe not casualties from blue

2:01:56

-on -blue, but like in

2:01:58

a Ramadi, like, friendly getting shot

2:02:00

at by friendly forces at by friendly forces. He's stop no

2:02:03

doing. Hey, say stop what know, like that stuff

2:02:05

was happening. You have to like the

2:02:07

de was was real have it was all the

2:02:09

time was real time and

2:02:11

it was was time. But he was like Roger

2:02:13

that, and then then he looked at myself and the company,

2:02:15

the like, all right, let's make sure that doesn't happen again. all

2:02:18

right, let's rolling out on the next mission

2:02:20

happen again, we're rolling out on the next mission in

2:02:22

was like, minutes. that's what we

2:02:24

did. Roger, and that's what we did, and that's what

2:02:26

we did, and that's what we did. I

2:02:28

I remember you telling me like me % thought

2:02:30

you were gonna die. going to die. That was it, Yeah,

2:02:33

like that was like the first time in my

2:02:35

life and it happened a couple of times

2:02:37

in Ronnie where I was like, a couple of

2:02:39

times in Radi where I was I'm fine.

2:02:41

was I made my peace I'm I

2:02:43

made I made was the price? I made

2:02:45

And that was was said, I

2:02:47

was 100 % gonna die like I chosen

2:02:49

three people were gonna come. to die

2:02:51

and I chosen always were when we were

2:02:53

in to I carried two grenades

2:02:55

and I would never throw I always carried

2:02:57

if it ever got that bad,

2:02:59

Rami. that one was for us. for

2:03:01

us. Now, the other thing I remember is that, like you

2:03:03

said, so now you get, you other thing

2:03:05

I remember is that like you said

2:03:08

to get stitched get shit. By

2:03:10

you have to get stitched up and shit.

2:03:13

By the time you're coming back, were

2:03:15

you a little morphined up? Oh up?

2:03:17

Oh I was, I was gone. gone. But

2:03:19

you, you didn't, you didn't

2:03:21

didn't compute. Like you still didn't

2:03:23

put together that was friendly forces.

2:03:25

was you got in that forces like you

2:03:27

got that that uh... vehicle one three just

2:03:29

had a big gunfight with the thinking

2:03:31

like we just had a big By the time

2:03:33

I was talking to you, you

2:03:35

were like, talking what? were like wait what like

2:03:38

that was was friendly iraqis what were

2:03:40

they they how did that

2:03:42

happen? so happen and so it would sucked

2:03:44

fucking sucked it it was and i mean

2:03:46

i got yeah when i I mean, to I got, yeah, when

2:03:48

I got to Charlie Matt, and they didn't help. I didn't know

2:03:50

where I was. i was We, you know, I'm you know,

2:03:52

I don't really get where all don't really get where

2:03:54

all the what their what their names are

2:03:56

yet. so I And so I kept remembering,

2:03:58

I kept saying what base I was. from no one knew

2:04:01

it apparently that was our word for it and so

2:04:03

I'm like hey I'm I'm connected here and they're like

2:04:05

yeah so I don't know how to get a hold

2:04:07

of anybody like so I'm on this base and I'm

2:04:09

like super high on morphine and because I remember I

2:04:11

was on the I was on the bed and I

2:04:14

got there and so I'm a pretty witty and high

2:04:16

and it was full of nurses And I had like

2:04:18

three or four nurses around my thing and I was

2:04:20

like, hey, I was a, I was pretty good looking

2:04:22

before this happened. So let's just make sure we keep,

2:04:24

you know, and I'm like, joking, I was like, and

2:04:27

so then like the leader nurse comes and runs them

2:04:29

all off. And then one, get away from this guy

2:04:31

before he was an incident. And then like one of

2:04:33

the nurses goes and gets a camera, because he, I

2:04:35

had a really good doc, he does internally does external

2:04:38

does external stitches, because. He was just cool and I

2:04:40

had to get x-rays. The reason I went is I

2:04:42

wasn't gonna go, but I asked our corman because I

2:04:44

was like, I thought it was gonna, we're still gonna

2:04:46

do this thing. And I was like, oh no, I

2:04:48

don't wanna miss this. And he was like, and they're

2:04:51

like, what do you wanna do? And I look at

2:04:53

the corman and I'm like, what do you think, bro?

2:04:55

I'm like, I'll default to you and he's like, I

2:04:57

want to see if your cheeks fractured. That's fractured, that's

2:04:59

my big thing. And so I was like, okay, I'll

2:05:02

go. And so I go, I get stitched up and

2:05:04

like the nurses bring me their camera over and like

2:05:06

show me what it looks like. I was like, that's

2:05:08

pretty cool. And and then there's nowhere for me to

2:05:10

go. Like I get done getting stitched up. And I

2:05:12

was like, I'm pretty tired. Can I get sleep somewhere?

2:05:15

And so they just like, there was like a high

2:05:17

bay next to the medical thing and I understand the

2:05:19

stress for like back at like back at operations for

2:05:21

like back at operations. It was our ops chief was

2:05:23

pissed because he was like he thought I was like

2:05:26

out rogue trying to get back to the crigidore element

2:05:28

And so I sleep for like six hours and then

2:05:30

I wake up and I remember I'm in like these

2:05:32

loaner camis from the army and I'm like I'm standing

2:05:34

outside Charlie mad and I'm super lost like we're in

2:05:36

this wartime environment. I'm like I don't know what my

2:05:39

next move is because I don't know what our base

2:05:41

is called apparently. No one knows where the seals are

2:05:43

like when I I say those

2:05:45

key words, I'm I'm lost. And

2:05:47

all of a sudden sudden

2:05:50

comes comes and like the movies like it like

2:05:52

by about 10 feet and

2:05:54

it's like it's like all breaks up

2:05:56

and it's like it's like those

2:05:58

guys and they're like, guys and they're

2:06:00

like bad. I just like like me

2:06:03

and I get in and I'm like get

2:06:05

in and I'm like, you

2:06:07

know, I'm telling the story like

2:06:09

like it was blue on

2:06:11

blue and I, I And I

2:06:14

didn't, I kept telling And I

2:06:16

I was like, no, no, I

2:06:18

was telling him him and said

2:06:20

it, he He told me later. him

2:06:22

like he or four times

2:06:24

where he was like, it

2:06:27

was a blue on blue blue

2:06:29

and finally it like, clicked and I stopped and I

2:06:31

I stopped and I was like, he was like,

2:06:33

yeah, that whole thing, that he was like, on that

2:06:35

whole thing, that was a blue on blue.

2:06:37

And I was like, like the whole was like,

2:06:39

are you kidding me? that, that, that sucked, that sucked, that

2:06:41

sucked, that sucked. Yeah, that sucked, that sucked. Yeah, just like the

2:06:44

whole thing. that And so sucked. that that sucked, that

2:06:46

sucked. Yeah, that horrible. sucked. Yeah, that sucked, that sucked. Yeah, that sucked.

2:06:48

Yeah, that sucked. We obviously do a do

2:06:50

a massive debrief, we put, to

2:06:52

prevent that shit from in place

2:06:54

to prevent that shit from happening again

2:06:56

work, you know, and the work was then we start

2:06:58

out, putting in the back to work, you

2:07:00

know, of became a massive thing. work

2:07:02

was extensive. McFarland on here, and

2:07:05

even like hearing it, out. like hearing

2:07:07

it, hearing it, hearing like combat outpost

2:07:09

kind of became a massive thing. hearing

2:07:11

it, like hearing it, I'll say it, hearing it,

2:07:13

hearing it hearing, here it hearing,

2:07:15

hearing, hearing, hearing, hearing, hearing,

2:07:17

hearing, And it seemed like there was like there

2:07:19

was so much going on. that we The

2:07:22

fact that we put in one of

2:07:24

those, we, I I mean the 101AD, together, but

2:07:26

the fact that we put in one

2:07:28

of those combat outposts like of those three

2:07:30

to five days every three to

2:07:32

five days for on end. end

2:07:34

is is freaking crazy. so It's so crazy

2:07:36

to think back, planning planning behind each one

2:07:38

of those things was so extensive and crazy and

2:07:41

crazy. that the fact that we would just like

2:07:43

get back and just go do it again,

2:07:45

and then get back and then go do

2:07:47

it again, and then get back and go

2:07:49

do it again, was back and then go do it

2:07:51

again and then get back and go

2:07:53

do it again it was freaking

2:07:55

wild you're out these these

2:07:57

operations. What was your? your

2:08:00

Like from your your you're a sniper. you're a

2:08:02

sniper what was you you thinking

2:08:04

about during these operations? these

2:08:06

operations honestly I was it was like

2:08:08

for a sniper it's it was like, for a sniper,

2:08:10

it was like being a kid in a candy store.

2:08:12

I'm out and I I'm out and I

2:08:14

am just looking for and and

2:08:16

you're gonna see somebody. And so so

2:08:18

it was you're just on all you're just on all the

2:08:20

time. And of course, know, we're out with Chris

2:08:22

Chris Kyle So you take the you take the

2:08:24

spot that he doesn't want. So

2:08:27

what's it? What does his spot spot look

2:08:29

like and what does your spot

2:08:31

look like? look like? Oh, yeah. So Chris,

2:08:33

is a long axis, miles of street, of

2:08:35

or four three or four intersections

2:08:37

and then you're like, 300 yards yards

2:08:39

of alley. so I got to And

2:08:41

so, I got to really hope

2:08:43

somebody wants somebody in that

2:08:45

alley space. alley they did, sometimes they did,

2:08:47

but like, we also we also learned his

2:08:49

right? Like, like times a day, like after. called a

2:08:51

prayer in the morning, it would start to heat

2:08:53

up, that's when the bad guys would come out,

2:08:55

the as soon as it got hot, they would

2:08:57

all disappear as it got the evening time when it was

2:08:59

until again, time and then they would all come back

2:09:01

out, fight for a few hours, and then they'd

2:09:03

disappear for the night. out, fight for a few hours, we started

2:09:05

to just learn when to be on the gun.

2:09:07

And so those were the times that, And so

2:09:10

we would try to get on we would try to

2:09:12

get So watch, so trying to find bad

2:09:14

guys. find mean... guys. And I It was good. It

2:09:16

was fun. it was fun, like loved it. it.

2:09:18

Now 130 degrees in some of those buildings

2:09:20

So you're like on the gun on the

2:09:22

just your eyes are on fire from from

2:09:24

sweat, but you're like, I don't wanna

2:09:26

miss anything. Cause I only got like,

2:09:28

there's another hour of bad guy time. And

2:09:30

if they go on any other street bad

2:09:32

guy it's mine. if they go on any other street than Chris is

2:09:35

it's mine. know, that was one thing that

2:09:37

I didn't really. I didn't really think much

2:09:39

about it while we were there. we were

2:09:41

there but clearly the the enemy

2:09:43

the enemy didn't go go out very

2:09:45

much at night. because Americans

2:09:47

have night vision and they

2:09:49

know that. so and there's no, and

2:09:51

the civilian populace went out

2:09:53

very little at night. And

2:09:56

so, if there was someone, a bad

2:09:58

guy out at night, at night we're gonna

2:10:00

get killed to get killed because was was just

2:10:02

obvious that they were a bad guy

2:10:05

at night night on patrol with a weapon

2:10:07

like they're gonna get shot So they didn't

2:10:09

do that so was no do the civilian was

2:10:11

as camouflage during the day they'd get

2:10:13

up walk around as know either they're hiding

2:10:15

their weapons get they made you know they're

2:10:17

hiding their how they attacked, but

2:10:19

I didn't really think about it

2:10:22

too much I didn't really stuff,

2:10:24

it too much the gosh, daytime

2:10:26

stuff. We're doing daytime stuff.

2:10:28

doing daytime stuff you There's two big

2:10:31

components. Number one, the bad

2:10:33

guys one the bad guys would The bad guys

2:10:35

would come out in the the daytime

2:10:37

number Number two. two We were we were

2:10:39

working with Iraqi forces. and and

2:10:41

Iraqi forces don't have night vision.

2:10:43

And Iraqi forces in some cases didn't

2:10:45

even have flashlights. So have couldn't go

2:10:47

and do a big clearance operation. and

2:10:49

do a big with Iraqi forces at night

2:10:51

because it would be freaking forces at night worst,

2:10:54

be worst idea ever. idea ever So we

2:10:56

do these big you know, we do

2:10:58

these big clearance operations. and if you're

2:11:01

if you're gonna take a company of Iraqi

2:11:03

soldiers and they're gonna clear a couple blocks

2:11:05

of the city. blocks of can't

2:11:07

do it at night. They have to do it at day. have

2:11:09

to do it in charge of training and

2:11:11

fighting with the Iraqi the we have to go

2:11:13

out in the day. to I didn't think the

2:11:15

day. I oh my gosh, of like, oh my this is

2:11:17

a terrible thing. No, terrible was thing. like, No,

2:11:19

is just what we have to do. just what

2:11:22

of guys in Vietnam, the like guys in Vietnam

2:11:24

of like the in Vietnam, They'd, sure, they'd go out

2:11:26

in the out but the night requirement, if they'd go

2:11:28

get some in the daytime. I didn't think

2:11:30

too much about, in were you even, was

2:11:32

that like a thing in your head? what did you,

2:11:34

were you and at the time, that because I

2:11:36

remember we got back, I heard people at the

2:11:38

oh, you like, in the I remember we got back, I at

2:11:40

the time I remember you operated when we got

2:11:42

because if you only went out at night at the

2:11:44

time, like, because I we're gonna get bad guys

2:11:46

based on the intel you got. we're gonna get bad

2:11:49

you didn't have that the they were just gonna

2:11:51

run around. So in the the daytime, we caught them

2:11:53

like like that's where they were then

2:11:55

if and they they always wanted to get

2:11:57

to you some to were happy to give it like oh

2:11:59

you want to Cool, we're here, we're ready. It

2:12:01

was another thing that was interesting when

2:12:03

I had General McFarland on is I

2:12:05

Didn't know this at the time, but

2:12:07

he was getting Questioned about like hey,

2:12:09

you've got all these you're killing all

2:12:11

these enemy. How is that even happening?

2:12:13

And he's like Come and look, come

2:12:15

and watch. And that's the same thing

2:12:17

I would getting like, you know, our

2:12:19

senior leadership would be like, hey, wait,

2:12:21

you killed nine guys in the past

2:12:24

three days. It's like, well, yeah, there's

2:12:26

a bunch of bad guys here. There's

2:12:28

a bunch of bad guys and they

2:12:30

are attacking coalition forces. And so when

2:12:32

we set up an overwatch position and

2:12:34

they come to attack, they're gonna die.

2:12:36

That's what's what's happening. So I think

2:12:38

it was such a little, such a

2:12:40

little micro environment of that. That intense

2:12:42

fighting and the aggressiveness from the insurgents

2:12:44

to Like you said like they wanted

2:12:46

to bring it and so when they

2:12:48

bring it They're gonna they're gonna get

2:12:50

some What happened? This is one story

2:12:52

that Lafe wrote about in the book

2:12:54

What happened when the time you fell

2:12:56

through the roof? Oh, man. All right

2:12:58

So I remember like You know there's

2:13:00

times where you like you don't remember

2:13:02

why you remember so well but I

2:13:04

remember that night really well so we

2:13:06

were in that building we'd been doing

2:13:08

sniper overwatch and during one of the

2:13:10

fire fights apparently somebody got really close

2:13:12

and put an ID in front of

2:13:14

the front door and we have rock

2:13:16

star EOD guys and so they checked

2:13:18

thank God like somebody looked down and

2:13:20

checked yeah yeah for sure and there's

2:13:22

like hey there's an ID here and

2:13:24

so They do everything to try to

2:13:26

like make it inert and I remember

2:13:28

Chris and I sitting in a room

2:13:30

because we're both snipers in this room

2:13:32

and like they're gonna blow this ID

2:13:34

we don't know how big it is

2:13:37

so we like cover ourselves and those

2:13:39

like those like cushion pads that are

2:13:41

like those little help yeah exactly and

2:13:43

I remember Chris kind of looked at

2:13:45

me and he's like you ever get

2:13:47

that he's like I just got that

2:13:49

feeling you know when you're like six

2:13:51

and you're like you're kind of scared

2:13:53

and I was like it's all right

2:13:55

because if it goes south we won't

2:13:57

Anyway, we're trying to we're

2:13:59

just joking about it.

2:14:01

and we're so they

2:14:03

blow it up. about

2:14:05

it. And so they blow it up

2:14:07

we still can't go out because they're like, hey,

2:14:09

we don't really know if it's a nerd they're

2:14:11

know we've talked about it, we're like, they

2:14:13

would do one, but then there'd be like a

2:14:15

cluster. we've so it was like, oh yeah, you

2:14:17

think you got one? There's five more. one, but

2:14:19

So we're be to work this problem and me

2:14:21

and one of the other one like, oh we go

2:14:23

downstairs you I look at this wall and I'm

2:14:25

like, I think this wall will go into

2:14:27

the roof of that building right over there. And

2:14:30

so we go up we we go head we

2:14:32

tell the they come down and they come down

2:14:34

and we bring. with us this with

2:14:36

us this time and we that wall lo and

2:14:38

and behold gets us onto that us onto that

2:14:40

other roof. we're And so we're like, gonna

2:14:42

we're going to escape. so And so we

2:14:44

figure out how to You know, we there's a out

2:14:46

how to get down and there's a door

2:14:48

that goes down it was I remember it was

2:14:50

20th we were we were doing everything on earth.

2:14:52

we We everything couldn't, we did not want to

2:14:54

go down to 20th Street. we're like, to -

2:14:56

20th Street was super gnarly. Street gnarly. And

2:14:58

so we're like, hey, if we go on

2:15:00

this roof, this this roof, to this roof, we'll

2:15:02

get to a street that's not 20th Street.

2:15:04

So we get we get onto the so we're so

2:15:06

we're clearing out, right? So we're gonna clear

2:15:08

the buildings down. down. And so of

2:15:11

of the I I remember, moves up to

2:15:13

the door. door and he he waits to open

2:15:15

it. so then I go to take a position in

2:15:17

front of the door of the door and there there was a

2:15:19

blue tarp with dust on it. on it. And And one

2:15:21

of them them because I remember later, he's like, didn't

2:15:23

you see that? And I was like, do you

2:15:25

think I saw that? Because if I saw that, I

2:15:27

wouldn't have stepped on it. And so what happened

2:15:29

was I didn't step on the blue tarp, saw but

2:15:31

I took a step to get in front of the

2:15:33

door on it. And so what happened was, I back on

2:15:35

the blue probably would have been able to a

2:15:37

I was wearing a get in had my

2:15:39

sniper rifle on my back and all of

2:15:41

that and it weight of it I started

2:15:43

to tip been one of the jails reaches

2:15:45

out to grab me a ruck. And I remember

2:15:47

he like he and I fall and I

2:15:50

hit that the ground just like my arms

2:15:52

and try to catch myself and basically

2:15:54

that like inverted me to my back and

2:15:56

then I fell like my feet onto my

2:15:58

back 20 feet onto my back and I had my M4

2:16:00

in my hand and I still have

2:16:02

the Meg from that M4 to this

2:16:04

day and it's like in like it's

2:16:06

like crumpled in half and it's because

2:16:08

my hand hit I broke open my

2:16:10

elbow and I'm on 20th Street and

2:16:13

I remember looking up and the guys

2:16:15

looking down at me and I'm like

2:16:17

winds knocked out of me ton of

2:16:19

pain and I was like and I

2:16:21

remember Lafe wouldn't stop talking on the

2:16:23

radio. And he goes, he's like, what

2:16:25

happened? And they're like, Matt fell through

2:16:27

and he's like, Matt, radio check, Matt,

2:16:29

are you okay? And he just wouldn't

2:16:31

stop talking. And I remember being so

2:16:34

irritated. I go, I just need a

2:16:36

minute. And I just was like, I

2:16:38

just needed to compose myself for a

2:16:40

second. Because now I'm like on 20th

2:16:42

Street and I'm just hoping like a

2:16:44

band of roving terrorists don't come and

2:16:46

just like taking me off into the

2:16:48

darkness and get my head cut off

2:16:50

on the internet. And by the way,

2:16:52

there's also the pressure of Nick Cush

2:16:55

who's been on the podcast, the EOD

2:16:57

Guide, they had put a charge on

2:16:59

this freaking, IED, they had put a

2:17:01

charge on this freaking, this freaking, this

2:17:03

freaking, the EOD guide, they had put

2:17:05

a charge on this freaking, and a

2:17:07

metal door. You would think it was

2:17:09

the vault from Fort Knox because they

2:17:11

are beating the hell out of the

2:17:13

store with a sledgehammer. And now I'm

2:17:16

getting kind of fed up because I'm

2:17:18

like, this is really loud and I'm

2:17:20

laying on 20th Street. And if somebody

2:17:22

comes to like get me, there's nothing

2:17:24

I can do. Like my gun's kind

2:17:26

of ineffective right now. You guys are

2:17:28

on the inside of that door. So

2:17:30

I'm like, hey, pass me, the bolt

2:17:32

cutters. And I had to do like

2:17:34

this hip arm thing where I cut

2:17:36

this, where I cut this. Yeah, one

2:17:39

of the new guys does me a

2:17:41

solid grabs my sniper rifle because it's

2:17:43

like 20 pounds and then we go

2:17:45

back to go back to the fob.

2:17:47

Good freaking times. And then you were,

2:17:49

you know, we're doing those overwatch, we're

2:17:51

also doing DAs, you know, we'd also,

2:17:53

we didn't do a ton of DAs,

2:17:55

we probably only did like, I think.

2:17:57

we're like 30 or

2:18:00

40 30 or 40 DAs,

2:18:02

but them. So you're you're

2:18:04

still doing your breaching

2:18:06

duties, and definitely had some

2:18:08

had some long discussions

2:18:10

about breaching there was rules that were

2:18:12

coming out, There was engagement

2:18:14

that coming out rules of engagement that were

2:18:17

coming out about that, hey, because there had been hey,

2:18:19

because there had been civilian casualties because

2:18:21

of breaching, And so there was a lot of pressure was

2:18:23

a lot of pressure don't hey, don't

2:18:25

explosively breach. you If you have to explosively

2:18:27

breach, you know, minimize the charge as

2:18:29

much as you can. You were kind

2:18:31

of in the midst of of in the of

2:18:34

all that, you know, hearing

2:18:36

it from both sides. The

2:18:38

thing with with exclusively breaching Charles is

2:18:40

if there's bad guys in there,

2:18:42

explosive breach gives you a huge

2:18:44

advantage because it rocks their world.

2:18:46

And you, as opposed opposed to you

2:18:48

trying to manually get through a

2:18:50

door, which is you're hitting

2:18:52

it with a it with a and

2:18:54

they're setting up that whole time.

2:18:56

So it really is radically

2:18:58

better there's bad guys to do

2:19:00

an explosive breach. But if there's

2:19:02

civilians, civilians the other side of that side now

2:19:05

you've got collateral damage it's terrible on

2:19:07

a bunch of different fronts. on

2:19:09

a bunch of different fronts.

2:19:11

So know, we you all kinds of

2:19:13

different things there of doing manual

2:19:15

breaches to doing callouts to doing to

2:19:18

when we had to the whole

2:19:20

nine yards we had to, the whole nine yards.

2:19:22

So in the middle of that the middle of

2:19:24

that whole would say I would say. Yeah, and I

2:19:26

and I mean you give you credit would

2:19:28

tell us, you're like, hey, and I would tell us, you're

2:19:30

like, breach and I remember this. When I'd

2:19:33

be you you're like, Hey, if you don't need

2:19:35

to explosive cut down you can cut down your

2:19:37

breach, to do that. And then you go ahead to do

2:19:39

that. And then you would ask me to

2:19:41

say, Matt, what are you using then I And

2:19:43

then I would let you know, I'm using

2:19:45

the most explosives that I was able to

2:19:47

use on a door. door. And what I gave what credit,

2:19:49

you you credit you never you never stopped me,

2:19:51

but you said. don't mess up, mess up.

2:19:54

up. And I knew, and I knew I I

2:19:56

made a mistake, I was gonna pay the going to pay

2:19:58

the man. But every every single time.

2:20:00

Because for me, I was looking at like,

2:20:02

hey, the transition, right? The transition in any

2:20:04

mission is the most dangerous point of a

2:20:06

mission. And as we're going from outside to

2:20:09

inside, I was like, I will not let

2:20:11

that maybe be my fault. But yeah, I

2:20:13

remember. And I could remember. And I could

2:20:15

remember. And I could remember your face. You

2:20:18

look at me and I would let you

2:20:20

know what I was going to use. And

2:20:22

you just put your head down. You're like,

2:20:24

all right. All right. And I remember being

2:20:26

like this. This is one. what's right and

2:20:29

if it's not if you don't need to

2:20:31

breach and there was plenty of times where

2:20:33

you guys wouldn't breach because there's another way

2:20:35

to enter but you know I looked at

2:20:38

it I guess is similar to you as

2:20:40

like if we're gonna have to breach we

2:20:42

have to breach for a reason so let's

2:20:44

make it do what it's supposed to do

2:20:47

and there was times where we like the

2:20:49

hostage rescue mission it was like hey make

2:20:51

sure your breach Is gonna knock these guys

2:20:53

like knock them out of out of ability,

2:20:55

you know, so I remember massive breaches for

2:20:58

that thing And it's the same thing with

2:21:00

like from the position of being a sniper

2:21:02

like you guys have to make the decision

2:21:04

on who to engage and you know I

2:21:07

always would tell you guys The rules of

2:21:09

engagement are you better make damn sure that

2:21:11

the person you're gonna kill is bad because

2:21:13

if we kill like there's normal people out

2:21:16

there In the city, there's doctors, there's teachers,

2:21:18

there's imams that are the religious leaders in

2:21:20

those areas. If you kill one of those

2:21:22

people, like it's freaking game over. Like we

2:21:25

might as well just pack up and go

2:21:27

home because that is the end of us

2:21:29

being able to do this type of operation.

2:21:31

So, you know, that's another time where it's

2:21:33

like, you guys, you have to, you have

2:21:36

to make the call. And we got surgical

2:21:38

with it after a while, like I remember

2:21:40

we started using a lot of cutting charges

2:21:42

and the nice thing is what I always

2:21:45

liked is you could generally like gauge what

2:21:47

was on where the door was. and

2:21:49

what rooms were in and

2:21:51

that was way like I would play

2:21:54

a would play a

2:21:56

game a it was a

2:21:58

hallway if would see

2:22:00

if I could get

2:22:02

the door to the

2:22:05

back of the hallway then

2:22:07

that because then cause then the the door out

2:22:09

of our way. And then it was just a you know

2:22:11

you know, cause nerding it up as a breach like, all

2:22:13

right, how did it flip? How did it roll? how

2:22:15

Did I do it did I And it's like a

2:22:18

big game. a big game but then there But then there was other

2:22:20

times where we would go up I I would check the door. it

2:22:22

was unlocked, we'd just walk in. we just And

2:22:24

that was and that was like a super cool

2:22:26

feeling of like there, somebody's asleep, and then

2:22:28

you just wake them up and they're

2:22:30

like, what is going on just your him up

2:22:32

and they're like, what is going on? And you're

2:22:34

like, wake up. Wake you, wake you. you walk in

2:22:36

point? point. I I did, right. Because Chris

2:22:38

walked point for you guys. Yeah,

2:22:40

and so I did, Yeah, for some

2:22:43

reason for I did both. I was

2:22:45

most of the time rear security,

2:22:47

but then if our elements flipped, or

2:22:49

there was a but then if be walking

2:22:51

and snipers would have to be

2:22:53

like doing was a, And so we Chris

2:22:55

was gonna be the sniper, I

2:22:58

would be point. You got it. to be

2:23:00

And yeah, and point, point was

2:23:02

good. Chris was gonna be time. I would

2:23:04

be had And I remember when remember when

2:23:06

you look when you're walking

2:23:08

point point. looking at these like at

2:23:10

of like these kind of like maps

2:23:12

brown gray And so you're like counting

2:23:14

blocks in the city and you're like in

2:23:16

at what buildings look like. And then when

2:23:19

you get there, it's not the same.

2:23:21

Yeah, they don't look that way. Buildings are

2:23:23

gone not same buildings are gone or like different. I remember

2:23:25

one time wildly was remember a

2:23:27

lot of time I was walking point and

2:23:29

I I got completely lost. lost I had no idea

2:23:31

where I was. Nobody knew that. And so I

2:23:33

was walking and I remember I started walking fast I

2:23:36

remember was over the radio and he's like, Matt,

2:23:38

slow down. And I was like, Lafe I'm walking fast

2:23:40

and he's had a timeline fast You're trying to find

2:23:42

a And I was like, okay, Yeah, I'm trying to find landmarks

2:23:44

but I'm trying to buy myself time. If I

2:23:46

do end up getting lost, I can get to

2:23:48

where I need to be once I hit something.

2:23:50

And the landmark was the canal. to find And

2:23:52

there was one bridge on that

2:23:54

canal we had to hit and

2:23:57

it was not around anything else

2:23:59

landmarks, I'm like in the very dense

2:24:01

part of the city. So I have

2:24:03

to count blocks, but they weren't the

2:24:05

same. And so I quickly realized like,

2:24:07

oh no, I'm off. And so I'm

2:24:10

kind of just like gauging where I

2:24:12

think I should be. And I know

2:24:14

in my mind I'm like, nope, no

2:24:16

idea. We could be anywhere in Ramadi

2:24:19

right now I have no clue. And

2:24:21

of course it's like super bad area.

2:24:23

And I remember I broke like the

2:24:25

edge of this house. And I remember

2:24:28

the EOD guy was up there with

2:24:30

me is like, oh, you hit it.

2:24:32

And I was like, bro, of course.

2:24:34

You hit it. Like, I wasn't about

2:24:37

to be like, I was sweating. Because

2:24:39

when I got past that house, it

2:24:41

was like that come to Jesus moment.

2:24:43

Or either there's gonna be a bridge

2:24:46

there or there is not a clue

2:24:48

on this earth that I know or

2:24:50

I'm at. That's what I call seal

2:24:52

excellence right there. Way to take ownership.

2:24:55

nicely done and the op tempo like

2:24:57

I mentioned the op tempo for the

2:24:59

whole brigade was crazy but you know

2:25:01

and that's one thing when when we

2:25:04

got back and we started like looking

2:25:06

it from a leadership perspective you know

2:25:08

I realize that for you guys sometimes

2:25:10

it was like hey get your shit

2:25:13

on we're going out again hey get

2:25:15

your shit on we're going out again

2:25:17

hey shit get your shit on we're

2:25:19

going out again and the people that

2:25:22

were most engaged in like the planning

2:25:24

we're all had a better understanding of

2:25:26

what we're getting our shit on to

2:25:28

go out and do and sometimes some

2:25:31

of the guys that were less engaged

2:25:33

with the planning were like dude what

2:25:35

like okay we'll get our gear on

2:25:37

and you do that four times seven

2:25:40

times 20 times and you're like dude

2:25:42

like this sucks so that definitely started

2:25:44

to wear on some of the guys

2:25:46

of like we're going out again we

2:25:49

just got back like we're getting our

2:25:51

gear on right now we just got

2:25:53

back so there's it was it was

2:25:55

A very high opt-empo that definitely tired

2:25:58

guys out. Yeah, like... I would

2:26:00

would say because we were so

2:26:02

like because we were so smoked and it

2:26:04

was because we're going out And it was because

2:26:06

we're going out, it's I remember 130 degrees.

2:26:08

in the And I remember there was one

2:26:10

point in the deployment where I was

2:26:12

like I die at I don't really care if I

2:26:14

died. not that I'm And it's not that I'm

2:26:16

gonna fight less. You just stopped caring

2:26:18

about your life because you're like, it's so

2:26:20

dangerous. If I just make this something

2:26:22

that I worry about, it's gonna drag on

2:26:24

me. drag on me and which is kind of like

2:26:26

you kind of an insight into enemy

2:26:29

when you just stop caring about life,

2:26:31

caring really can become a scary individual can

2:26:33

you're like, oh, you want to shoot

2:26:35

at me? I don't care, I'm coming

2:26:37

for you. me I don't care I'm coming for you and

2:26:39

started to burn out and I remember

2:26:41

out were some grumblings at least at

2:26:43

some one platooner level least at like the one platooner

2:26:45

got like wind of it got for

2:26:47

some reason for was me Lafe

2:26:49

thought it was me. I was was actually on

2:26:52

his side. so, Leif and I a a

2:26:54

kind of a moment where for like a hot for like

2:26:56

a hot minute, he took me off operations. like

2:26:58

it's not that I didn't go. He told

2:27:00

me, he's like, hey, I'm gonna hold you

2:27:02

back at the hold And I was like, base and

2:27:04

I was And he was like, and he kind

2:27:06

of kind of explain like hey there's know, there's some hate

2:27:08

and discontent. He thought I was running it.

2:27:10

And I had to be like, and I bro,

2:27:12

I'm bro your side. side like and so we so we

2:27:14

actually had like, kind of like a heart

2:27:16

to heart. And I remember we had I

2:27:18

out back of like it out back of like the platoon hut and

2:27:20

it was, it was explaining I'm like don't know why

2:27:22

the hell they're doing it. And I'm

2:27:24

like, I'm trying to be the to be trying

2:27:26

to be like, trying to what if we

2:27:28

do what amount? do What if we take that

2:27:30

to if we take know, we just sleep in

2:27:32

our bed like once a week or

2:27:35

twice a week, that'll be good. that'll be good And

2:27:37

yeah, so him and I got so at and I got

2:27:39

aligned at that point after I temporarily

2:27:41

got 20 minutes. And for about 20 minutes. and

2:27:44

I was like, all right, I was to my counterparts

2:27:46

and I was like, all right, I

2:27:48

was like the negotiator. do right a so

2:27:50

if we do. thing is, and it week fair like,

2:27:52

the thing is it a leader, as

2:27:54

as I became a leader looking at

2:27:56

the guys were looking at was just here just a

2:27:59

break here and there it is. true like they're up

2:28:01

there they're getting shot at and at one

2:28:03

point you're just like your nerves just want

2:28:05

to stop for just a minute and I

2:28:07

think they did that like we did that

2:28:10

and so I thought that was no big

2:28:12

deal and to like your point is we

2:28:14

were going so fast not knowing what was

2:28:16

happening because there was we it was almost

2:28:18

two years after we got back from Ramadi

2:28:21

that I recognize what we did like oh

2:28:23

there was reason to that just that chaos

2:28:25

insanity and sanity and It's it's always something

2:28:27

that like I always taught my guys to

2:28:30

I was like look look for what we're

2:28:32

doing if I'm not telling you ask me

2:28:34

if I think I'm telling you and you

2:28:36

don't get it then I'm I'm off so

2:28:38

just ask me what the hell's going on

2:28:41

yeah and that I'm sure you've heard Lafe

2:28:43

talk about this actually wrote about it like

2:28:45

when we got back and I put together

2:28:47

this slide of like showing the the the

2:28:50

retaking back of Ramati and like Lafe was

2:28:52

kind of like damn you know even late

2:28:54

and he's you know next to me talking

2:28:56

all the time even he was like damn

2:28:58

like that's a That's a pretty awesome thing

2:29:01

to be able to see so to think

2:29:03

that you or never mind the new guys

2:29:05

like to think that you would be like

2:29:07

oh I understand the strategic perspective of what

2:29:10

we were able to accomplish like no it's

2:29:12

it's gonna so so that was a huge

2:29:14

lesson learned is making sure that you can't

2:29:16

expect guys to know and understand even like

2:29:18

sitting here I mean, I remember when you

2:29:21

guys all arrived at our first task unit

2:29:23

meeting in the city of Vermont, I'm like,

2:29:25

it is going to be mayhem. There's going

2:29:27

to be combat, it's going to be a

2:29:30

historical opportunity for the seal teams right now

2:29:32

with what we're about to do. Like, I

2:29:34

said something along those lines. And you were

2:29:36

like, yeah, whatever. It doesn't seem like, you

2:29:38

know what I mean? Sure. So it's just

2:29:41

so. It's just so important that you are

2:29:43

able to like reach and say hey dude,

2:29:45

do you understand what I'm talking about? Like

2:29:47

I shouldn't have to

2:29:50

put you in to put

2:29:52

have you get shot

2:29:54

at by freaking and you

2:29:56

go, oh, it seems

2:29:58

like some shit's going

2:30:01

on here. before you go, on

2:30:03

it seems like some shit's going on

2:30:05

There was freaking people

2:30:07

getting wounded and killed

2:30:10

every day. was freaking city

2:30:12

is only so big and and killed

2:30:14

going into the city. city's only so we're

2:30:16

going into the city, guess what? It's gonna be

2:30:18

on. we're going into the city, guess those

2:30:20

are to be lessons learned are big just

2:30:22

making sure that, you know, you're

2:30:24

communicating with everybody and you're letting

2:30:26

them know. exactly why

2:30:29

they're doing what they're doing

2:30:31

doing and understand the big picture big picture of

2:30:33

what's happening if they don't they don't understand that

2:30:35

you know know then it turns into what

2:30:37

I was talking about like Oh, you just

2:30:39

want me to get my gear on

2:30:41

and go out again? me to I remember gear

2:30:43

forget go I forget I remember one very specific

2:30:45

situation where specific situation where you been

2:30:47

in the been in the field for like 48 hours and

2:30:49

hours. in And while you were in the field, we

2:30:51

were spinning up a target. So so now we as soon

2:30:53

as you guys got back, it was like, hey,

2:30:55

we're going to do a going like. DA like in three

2:30:57

hours. and you know you guys get back

2:31:00

at whatever you guys get back at whatever or

2:31:02

nine o 'clock at night or something. It was like, hey,

2:31:04

we're gonna launch at one. it one a.m. and

2:31:06

I remember I I remember dude like

2:31:08

I was like, I was looking I was I was looking

2:31:10

at, I was like, dude, this dude is

2:31:13

dehydrated I was like this I was like, this dude

2:31:15

is dehydrated. And I'm telling him him like it

2:31:17

on, we're going back out. And it was

2:31:19

like. out and it was like okay

2:31:21

you know know in that in

2:31:23

mind and and and course course you

2:31:25

got like like BTF Tony who's like, I

2:31:27

don't need water water and I I will

2:31:29

go out and I will go out until

2:31:31

you make me come back like I'm

2:31:34

going. So, like I'm uh, so those are

2:31:36

all good lessons. There's good things to

2:31:38

think about. good things to think it

2:31:40

was a push, man. it It was It

2:31:42

continuous, even when we were able

2:31:44

to say, all right. when we were

2:31:46

we've got an opportunity to

2:31:48

take, you know, instead of... to

2:31:51

days before the army, we'll go one

2:31:53

day before the army. Instead of staying two

2:31:55

days after the army gets in, we'll

2:31:57

pull back day. So we So we started making

2:31:59

some adjustments to get. you guys to make sure

2:32:01

that you guys were you know rested

2:32:03

and recovered to the best of our

2:32:05

ability and and the bottom line is

2:32:08

like whatever complaints guys had every single

2:32:10

guy every single time 100% of the

2:32:12

time got their shit on and went

2:32:14

out the wire when it was time

2:32:16

to go so freaking awesome like that's

2:32:19

what you expect these are frog men

2:32:21

that they're gonna bitch they might bitch

2:32:23

they might complain And then they're going

2:32:25

to get their gear on and go

2:32:27

to work and that's what every single

2:32:30

guy did, which was freaking awesome to

2:32:32

see. And you know, like in my

2:32:34

retirement speech, I talked about when we

2:32:36

came back from that, from the blue

2:32:38

on blue at Keregador, from you getting

2:32:40

shot almost twice at Keregador, and then

2:32:43

I put the list up like, hey,

2:32:45

who wants to go to go? and

2:32:47

every single guy in the task, you

2:32:49

know, put their name on the board

2:32:51

and said, I'll go. And that's the

2:32:54

attitude that, that's Frogman activity right there.

2:32:56

Like, there's war, put me in, I'm

2:32:58

ready to go. We start pushing through

2:33:00

deployment, we're moving towards, you know, now

2:33:02

we're doing big operations, now we're helping

2:33:05

the army, we're helping the Marine Corps.

2:33:07

provide support. We're getting towards August 2nd.

2:33:09

What do you remember about going into

2:33:11

August 2nd? Like what going into August

2:33:13

2nd, which was Mark when Ryan got

2:33:16

wounded and Mark got killed. What do

2:33:18

you remember going into that? So that

2:33:20

was I wasn't there that day because

2:33:22

that was right after I fell through

2:33:24

the roof. My elbow was broken open

2:33:27

like I like our her old man

2:33:29

Korman on base. He told me he

2:33:31

was like, hey, you. This

2:33:33

is the last op

2:33:35

you have to

2:33:38

stay back for to

2:33:40

I was like, hey,

2:33:42

can I go

2:33:44

on this op? he's

2:33:46

like, one more. go

2:33:49

if you break

2:33:51

those stitches, we've got

2:33:53

to do it

2:33:55

again and you're just

2:33:57

never going to

2:33:59

heal. you And then

2:34:02

we're going to antibiotics

2:34:04

whole thing. got to do

2:34:06

it I remember, I

2:34:08

remember the night.

2:34:10

I remember the night

2:34:13

before thing so i remember i

2:34:15

remember the and I were like, the

2:34:17

night around. and um mark of all

2:34:19

things like we're joking around of all know, and you know

2:34:21

like I i shot, know, and so

2:34:23

so i just just remember it like we're

2:34:26

it was one of those times those

2:34:28

times where like It It, it just

2:34:30

worked out to where we had a really

2:34:32

good, like hanging out, out joking all the the way

2:34:34

until he left. I was, I think I

2:34:36

was out there with you when they, when

2:34:38

they took off, like we, we watched everybody

2:34:40

go like we watched it's just a very specific memory.

2:34:43

specific memory just him and I

2:34:45

and I out because him and I lived

2:34:47

in, we lived in the same tent. in and

2:34:49

so. in the same tent. And and it

2:34:51

wasn't overly overly it's just another day. day. Another

2:34:53

op. Yeah, was just another another op. That's they

2:34:55

were all just another op. op And that's

2:34:57

one of the hardest things hardest you

2:34:59

think, think, if you're in a leadership position,

2:35:02

you should somehow be able to predict

2:35:04

should somehow gonna go wrong or not. It's

2:35:06

like. something's going to go wrong or not.

2:35:08

operations that you're like get back and

2:35:10

you go get back and you go, a lot of

2:35:12

things could have gone really bad and

2:35:14

yet here we are everyone's fine we are,

2:35:16

accomplished fine, mission then sometimes you're going out

2:35:18

on an you're that you on a op in

2:35:20

the back of your mind in the this

2:35:22

your one shouldn't be that big of

2:35:24

a deal and it turns out to

2:35:26

be big of a deal. a big

2:35:29

freaking a big deal. deal

2:35:31

so you're you're back you

2:35:33

know Ryan gets so

2:35:36

badly know, Ryan gets so

2:35:38

badly wounded, Mark gets killed.

2:35:40

and now like what's now,

2:35:42

your thought as thought as

2:35:45

a freaking one platoon

2:35:47

guy? as this as

2:35:49

this unfold. and I

2:35:51

mean and tell that tell that

2:35:53

point of my career. I had

2:35:56

only known one budge instructor

2:35:58

who died while being while being

2:36:00

a... contractor. So I'd had any real

2:36:02

brushes with death personally. And I remember

2:36:04

being woken up by one of the

2:36:07

new guys who came back with the

2:36:09

body and he was like, hey Matt,

2:36:11

Mark's gone. And I was like, it

2:36:13

didn't register, right? I just woke up,

2:36:15

it'd just woke up, it'd been early

2:36:18

because we, you know, I think we

2:36:20

went to bed around like seven, eight,

2:36:22

nine in the morning, and he had

2:36:24

been back by like 930. and I

2:36:27

just and I came out and I

2:36:29

remember Ryan and Mark's body armor was

2:36:31

there without them and I mean yeah

2:36:33

it was there without them and it

2:36:35

was covered in blood and by this

2:36:38

point we had those those augment seals

2:36:40

like super junior guys and he was

2:36:42

up and he was out and I

2:36:44

looked at the body armor and I

2:36:47

looked at him and I said hey

2:36:49

get a hose and clean the blood

2:36:51

off this body armor. And then me

2:36:53

and the one platooner went to Charlie

2:36:55

Med to see Mark because he was

2:36:58

there and I I remember when I

2:37:00

walk and we walked him one at

2:37:02

a time and I remember looking at

2:37:04

him and he didn't look bad. He

2:37:07

looked normal like right like normal like

2:37:09

nothing was out of the the ordinary

2:37:11

and I remember taking his I pulled

2:37:13

his American flag off and I gave

2:37:15

it his like main new guy friend

2:37:18

because I was like somebody's gonna have

2:37:20

this we're not just gonna let this

2:37:22

get washed into the mix and so

2:37:24

that's that's kind of what i remember

2:37:27

of that morning and that was a

2:37:29

very it was it was surreal for

2:37:31

all of us because i think like

2:37:33

i said i was twenty three so

2:37:35

being that close dealing with that at

2:37:38

that time it was different and we

2:37:40

didn't really know how to deal with

2:37:42

it together nobody knew like what to

2:37:44

do how we were supposed to act

2:37:47

and i remember when they sent the

2:37:49

body home a couple of new guys

2:37:51

went with them and it was it

2:37:53

was so so confusing to

2:37:55

us to us that. One of

2:37:58

of the new

2:38:00

guys were when he

2:38:02

went home he went home, Did

2:38:04

you see your girlfriend? see your girlfriend? like,

2:38:06

yeah, we're like. yeah, we're like, you hook

2:38:08

up with your girlfriend? with your he's like, yeah, we're

2:38:11

And he's like, yeah, we're like, I guess

2:38:13

that's a normal thing you would do.

2:38:15

thing you would do. Like I say that because

2:38:17

we're so confused on how we

2:38:19

were supposed to act on how we were supposed to

2:38:21

And And lasted, I mean, I down

2:38:23

long. Like we got back out, but.

2:38:25

back out, but it was it was confusing

2:38:27

Because I were probably not overly good

2:38:29

at processing at And so now

2:38:31

we're processing this in so now we're

2:38:34

And I remember hyper time the I were as you

2:38:36

were going through it. So we could kind

2:38:38

of track what we were doing because it

2:38:40

was again, it was so weird. kind of track

2:38:43

what we were doing because it I had

2:38:45

the was so weird So yeah, yeah, talking

2:38:47

about this the other day

2:38:49

talking about this the other day the You know

2:38:51

we know, we had the

2:38:53

feeling of invincibility, right? Well,

2:38:55

I shouldn't say we, because

2:38:57

I didn't. I, you know, I'm seeing all

2:39:00

the You know, I'm seen. all the

2:39:02

time. the casualties all the time. I'm

2:39:04

thinking, you know, so I'm thinking. to

2:39:07

be lucky. Like, it's just continue

2:39:09

to be. just playing

2:39:11

the numbers. Like, if you

2:39:13

keep, if you just gambling, it's

2:39:16

just playing the numbers. if

2:39:18

you keep, if you keep bets,

2:39:20

keep bats, keep placing bats, eventually,

2:39:22

the are gonna. gonna. are

2:39:24

are going to hit you. to hit you.

2:39:26

And, but like the the

2:39:28

other thing is like the army

2:39:31

guys, the Marine Corps, like

2:39:33

one thing that I was,

2:39:35

that happens is when

2:39:37

something happens on

2:39:40

the Something happens on

2:39:42

the everybody knows about it.

2:39:44

it. So you're all kind of,

2:39:46

we're all kind of interconnected because when,

2:39:48

you know, there's a know, there's a big explode,

2:39:50

when you're out in an position and

2:39:52

there's a big explosion. and there's a

2:39:55

big explosion You know, know, some Marine

2:39:57

Corps unit or Army unit got hit,

2:39:59

hit an ID. and they got a

2:40:01

casualty and that gets reported up

2:40:03

on the battalion net and well

2:40:05

the radio man or life he

2:40:07

hears that and he goes hey

2:40:10

guys just hit an ID like

2:40:12

they have casualties you're like okay

2:40:14

you know got it Roger and

2:40:16

same thing like when you were

2:40:18

in an overwatch position and you

2:40:20

freaking shoot and kill an enemy

2:40:22

with an RPG that gets reported

2:40:25

so like the battalion net goes

2:40:27

hey you know Lateful call the

2:40:29

company commander. Hey, we just engaged

2:40:31

one one enemy fighter with an

2:40:33

RPG the company net calls a

2:40:35

battalion that says hey Seals just

2:40:37

engaged a guy an RPG gun

2:40:40

or one enemy KIA that goes

2:40:42

the brigade net So all the

2:40:44

all the information is getting disseminated,

2:40:46

you know, even just a platoon

2:40:48

commander an army platoon commander goes.

2:40:50

Hey Seals just shot another guy

2:40:52

with an RPG like they're just

2:40:55

telling everyone's going on. It's just

2:40:57

so so you have this this

2:40:59

this interconnected situation happening where everybody

2:41:01

kind of knows and Let's face

2:41:03

it that had been you know

2:41:05

April May June July and I

2:41:07

guess April is like we weren't

2:41:10

Too active in April because we

2:41:12

just showed up in April. So

2:41:14

it's probably it's actually like May

2:41:16

June July and what is the

2:41:18

army and what is the Marine

2:41:20

Corps know about the seals? I'll

2:41:22

tell you what they know about

2:41:25

the seals at that time three

2:41:27

enemy killed in action by 300

2:41:29

win mag two enemy killed in

2:41:31

action mortar team killed like that's

2:41:33

what they knew over and over

2:41:35

and over again and we'd roll

2:41:37

back into base we'd roll back

2:41:40

into the fob we'd roll back

2:41:42

into the cops and it'd be

2:41:44

like high-five you know those guys

2:41:46

were freaking stoked and so when

2:41:48

Mark got killed it was like

2:41:50

all of a sudden that invincibility

2:41:53

for the platoons and for you

2:41:55

know, the army looking at us,

2:41:57

the Marine Corps looking at us

2:41:59

like... Oh, I guess not. You

2:42:01

I guess not. You know, I guess it's not

2:42:03

invincible. and And

2:42:06

that was, was, a wake-up

2:42:09

you know, And like call. And

2:42:11

like you said, we train, know,

2:42:13

when we train in our know, in

2:42:15

our workup. we deal with

2:42:17

down men all the time. the

2:42:19

time. We deal with

2:42:21

down men, but the

2:42:23

down man... After that iteration is now back to

2:42:25

life and we're carrying on. we're And so we know how to

2:42:28

pick the guy up. We know how to treat him. We know

2:42:30

how to do the medical stuff. We know how to do

2:42:32

all that stuff. do the medical stuff. We know

2:42:34

how to do all that didn't know. We didn't

2:42:36

There was no was no I'm like, I'm like oh

2:42:38

what you just said, you had to had to No

2:42:40

one told us that. told us and it wasn't like like

2:42:44

You know know, seal leadership at the time had some

2:42:46

amount of amount of combat experience where they were

2:42:48

like, hey if you lose a guy, here's what

2:42:50

you're going to have to talk about. Here's what

2:42:52

you're going to have to do. Here's do. going

2:42:54

what to be ready for. And by the way,

2:42:56

to all that also takes a gonna to the

2:42:58

fact that we have missions to do. also takes a

2:43:00

back And so. fact that we have missions

2:43:03

to you know, so a you know

2:43:05

do a of life ceremony, a

2:43:07

memorial ceremony, memorial ceremony. We're on put

2:43:09

Mark on on his flight going home.

2:43:11

home And the next day, it's gonna be

2:43:13

get your gear on, going to be get

2:43:15

your It's on to get back

2:43:17

into the fight. good. It's So

2:43:19

get was the fight. So all that

2:43:22

was You you know, what we had to

2:43:24

to figure out what you had

2:43:26

to what you had to figure out. had

2:43:28

to what I had to figure out. what

2:43:30

everyone had to figure out. out there

2:43:33

was no playbook. Yeah, there's a

2:43:35

playbook for how you notify the

2:43:37

family. Yes, there's a playbook for

2:43:39

the administrative forms you gotta fill

2:43:41

out, but there's no playbook on

2:43:43

what you say. out, but there's

2:43:45

no playbook on what you say friend

2:43:47

when you hand him that American flag

2:43:49

that he took, that you took off

2:43:51

of his, flag of his uniform. off there's

2:43:53

no. uniform. Like There's no no lessons

2:43:55

for that. At least least it wasn't

2:43:58

at the time. time. And

2:44:00

you know, my thing was, in

2:44:02

my mind, the thing that I

2:44:05

figured out to do was get

2:44:07

back to work. Like, we cannot

2:44:09

sit here. This is not good.

2:44:11

We need to get our shit

2:44:13

back on and get back out

2:44:16

there. And that's what we did.

2:44:18

And the fight continued and the

2:44:20

push is continued and the build

2:44:22

outs continued. It would just, everything

2:44:25

kept going. When was, when was

2:44:27

the last time you saw Mikey?

2:44:29

And so I, I remember, just

2:44:31

like Mark, I remember the last,

2:44:33

because we had a weird interaction

2:44:36

that I said like, so I

2:44:38

was in the chow hall. I

2:44:40

was on the computers, you remember

2:44:42

the computers bank? The travel in,

2:44:44

can't Mark Lee? Yeah, okay. And

2:44:47

so we, I was, he had,

2:44:49

he had, he had come by

2:44:51

for some reason. And I was

2:44:53

emailing, whoever, whatever, you know, I

2:44:55

was doing whatever. And he had

2:44:58

to go to medical. He had

2:45:00

to fly out. And he came

2:45:02

back, he went up, got looked

2:45:04

at, got medicine, and when he

2:45:06

came back, he was in for

2:45:09

a little while. And I remember

2:45:11

because when he got back to

2:45:13

Camp Park, he's like, what is,

2:45:15

what is, what is, what is,

2:45:18

what's going on at Craigitor? And

2:45:20

I was like, dude, they're rolling

2:45:22

out or not. And he's like,

2:45:24

you gotta get me back there.

2:45:26

Like, can you get me back

2:45:29

there tonight? He begged and I

2:45:31

ended up getting him a logistic.

2:45:33

Yeah, and so he walked in

2:45:35

and I remember saw him and

2:45:37

I hadn't seen him in a

2:45:40

while. I'm like, Mikey, how are

2:45:42

things going? And it was the

2:45:44

weirdest thing like, you know, we

2:45:46

do like the bro five. But

2:45:48

then he. like he he

2:45:51

came in for

2:45:53

a in I

2:45:55

thought we were

2:45:57

just gonna do

2:45:59

the burrow five I

2:46:02

thought me just gonna do

2:46:04

the bro five and then it was longer than

2:46:06

any hug that we have ever had. than

2:46:08

any hug that we have ever had was kind

2:46:11

of like, oh, kind of like cool, man.

2:46:13

Hey, it's great seeing you, but. seeing you

2:46:15

I remember that interaction because that

2:46:17

was the last one. the last

2:46:19

one it was just was just but

2:46:21

then bro solid like a solid after that.

2:46:23

And it was something we had

2:46:25

never done. we had never and

2:46:28

it was just. was just that That was

2:46:30

the last time last time I saw

2:46:32

him. And so it was was, I

2:46:34

I mean, I'm glad. I'm glad that's

2:46:36

the last time. That was our

2:46:38

last interaction. know, I'm glad I like

2:46:40

cracking jokes at his was our last interaction,

2:46:43

that. I'm glad I No, mean, like it

2:46:45

was, that was a very

2:46:47

surreal. or anything,

2:46:49

you know, anything like that.

2:46:52

But no, I mean, yeah, it was,

2:46:54

that right, towards the end

2:46:56

of the deployment. event. Obviously 29th,

2:46:58

that's when that's when was killed.

2:47:00

How much How much longer after

2:47:02

that did you head home?

2:47:04

I went right before that.

2:47:06

before that. So me and and the

2:47:08

corpsman had to go to to

2:47:10

freefall school. free fall school. I

2:47:12

had no idea I remember I was sleeping in my bed I

2:47:15

was sleeping in my bed and the

2:47:17

corpsman the corpsman comes in, he's

2:47:19

like, Matt. And And by this time, like my

2:47:22

nerves are nerves I shot, I like up sweating. I

2:47:24

was like, what? What is like, And he's

2:47:26

like, is it? hate waking you up. damn, I hate like,

2:47:28

you up. He's like, hey, like, hey, we have to

2:47:30

go to freefall school. And I was like,

2:47:32

right now. And he's like, yeah, we're leaving he's

2:47:34

afternoon. And I'd been asleep like three hours.

2:47:36

So I had to pack my entire room

2:47:39

up. like And it was just a couple

2:47:41

of weeks earlier. But as you know, like up.

2:47:43

And start, like a got to get back. And

2:47:45

that was the one that I had to

2:47:47

go to. we left i Yeah, we week before I think

2:47:49

a week before that happened because I was with

2:47:51

the corpsman from that platoon called the one who called

2:47:53

me and told me that. i I was like,

2:47:55

I remember I was standing in my condo at

2:47:57

the time and I was like, are you serious? i

2:47:59

was like you serious And I was like, Jesus. And

2:48:01

so I was back to receive Mike

2:48:03

when he landed in San Diego. So

2:48:06

I had like, I was one of

2:48:08

the guys in my uniform, we were

2:48:10

at the airport, took offloaded the casket

2:48:12

and did the whole thing. Damn, dude.

2:48:14

That must have been freaking totally surreal.

2:48:16

Especially because like how, what other guys

2:48:19

from Tasking to Bruiser were there for

2:48:21

that? Just the guys that were sent

2:48:23

back. So there was a few, I

2:48:25

want to say one of the JOs

2:48:27

were sent back. And then

2:48:29

I think a couple of the guys from

2:48:31

the team came to be like the other

2:48:34

two. So it wasn't a lot of us.

2:48:36

So again, it was one of those times

2:48:38

where like now we had this other thing

2:48:40

happen, we kind of knew. But yeah, so

2:48:42

we were kind of on the back end

2:48:45

helping them do that whole side of it

2:48:47

because obviously Mark came back, we were all

2:48:49

working still. So we sent a small group

2:48:51

back, they did the funeral, they did all

2:48:53

the stuff, and then. when the rest of

2:48:56

the platoon, because you know, the platoon was

2:48:58

trickling back and as they came back, they

2:49:00

were just plugging in to how, because by

2:49:02

the time that you all came back, I

2:49:04

think, was right before the funeral. And so

2:49:07

then we all went to that. Yeah, actually,

2:49:09

no, we weren't back for the funeral. Oh,

2:49:11

you weren't back for the funeral? We didn't,

2:49:13

I was like me, Stone or Lave Tony,

2:49:15

like there's a crew of us that, I

2:49:18

mean, we're the leadership, we can't want to

2:49:20

leave until we wouldn't want to leave until

2:49:22

like, until like, until like, like, like, like,

2:49:24

like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like,

2:49:26

like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like,

2:49:29

like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like,

2:49:31

like, like, like, like, like, like, like, And

2:49:33

what was it like? You know, so you

2:49:35

talked about reading after-action reports when you were

2:49:37

in the PI in your first platoon and

2:49:40

Fallujah was going on and the snipers are

2:49:42

out there doing work and you're sitting in

2:49:44

the PI. And I didn't, when, when, when,

2:49:46

later, when we got home, you know, my

2:49:48

buddies were like, bro, we were reading the

2:49:51

freaking AARs and they were, you know, it

2:49:53

was a lot of, a lot of, a

2:49:55

lot of combat. like a lot of combat

2:49:57

was happening and there hadn't been that kind

2:49:59

of sustained. Combat for a particular

2:50:02

like single unit for a long

2:50:04

time. When you got home, what

2:50:06

was it like? was you are,

2:50:08

like here you are? back, rolling back. You've just

2:50:10

like been wounded. You've like been

2:50:12

through a lot of combat

2:50:14

activity activity talking to guys, to they

2:50:16

aware of what was going

2:50:18

on? Were they going Were they they

2:50:20

saw your Were they like dude? We was

2:50:22

it like? your ARs. What was it like? You knew

2:50:24

we were the teams in the teams like Danny's McPeas like

2:50:26

We were I mean that mean that was the

2:50:29

the gold standard at that point

2:50:31

right like because we had seen so

2:50:33

much combat seen just couldn't get enough

2:50:35

they're like what just is insane what

2:50:37

did you do and it was

2:50:39

just like what, this is insane? could do

2:50:42

no wrong. you do? And it was just we

2:50:44

were, it do no wrong. And That was awesome. were, it

2:50:46

was, that came back and you had

2:50:48

all this experience. you had all this Plus, I

2:50:50

mean, in a greater sense, I mean, in did

2:50:52

exactly what we signed up for. what

2:50:54

we a sustained amount of time,

2:50:57

saw this incredible amount of combat,

2:50:59

even though, of course, of say,

2:51:01

it was the best and worst

2:51:03

time of my life. And I

2:51:05

think I've heard that from you, the

2:51:07

best and I 100 my that. And I think

2:51:09

I've heard that from you, but and that's I

2:51:12

was the that Yeah How was the

2:51:14

the world like when

2:51:16

you got home. the world when you go

2:51:18

from. like you go from? Ramadi

2:51:21

That's gotta be freaking weird, right? You

2:51:23

go from go from Ramadi, you're out on on an

2:51:25

you're killing people, you got people trying to

2:51:28

kill you. kill you, and now now you're at You

2:51:30

know, the first time I remember something weird know, was in time I

2:51:32

I something weird happening I in Coronado. know, I was driving

2:51:34

was talking to the corpsman, was like, you

2:51:36

know, I was driving through Coronado and he

2:51:38

stops me and the the buildings are the

2:51:40

exact size of the ones in Ramadi. I was

2:51:42

like, that's what it is. it is. Cause I

2:51:44

just got, I was driving through Coronado and

2:51:46

I just got and I sweaty. And I was

2:51:48

like, that's weird. I And so I was telling

2:51:50

so I was he didn't even let me finish.

2:51:52

He's like, it's happened to me like three

2:51:54

times. me finish. He's like, it's no, I was like three times. But

2:51:56

no, I was say least. And the thing is

2:51:58

I wasn't is, I wasn't like emotional about people. But

2:52:00

like about the guys and I remember

2:52:02

like You were like viciously protective of

2:52:04

anybody that was in that that task

2:52:06

unit and I mean I was 23

2:52:09

so that was a problem I Remember

2:52:11

we gotten a few draggers out there

2:52:13

because like and it was like God

2:52:15

help someone that took a swing at

2:52:17

one of those guys Because then it

2:52:19

was like I didn't turn off and

2:52:22

I was like oh, it's and it

2:52:24

just you went into just like all

2:52:26

I mean the bond And so it

2:52:28

took some time for that to like

2:52:30

level out because again like we didn't

2:52:32

know how nobody knew how like we

2:52:35

weren't seeing Sykes. You just you got

2:52:37

back and you started training again and

2:52:39

you started like a new workup or

2:52:41

you went to a school and you're

2:52:43

just like okay we're cool now and

2:52:45

the thing is like I was fine

2:52:48

like I like it's never hurt like

2:52:50

I truly if I could spend all

2:52:52

my money and do it again I

2:52:54

would because I loved it. No doubt

2:52:56

about that. But I mean, there's some

2:52:58

things that were- Did you know that

2:53:01

while you were there? No. See, this

2:53:03

is again, I was older, and how

2:53:05

old were you? 22? 23? Yeah, 23

2:53:07

on deployment. So I was like, I

2:53:09

turned 35 on deployment, and I spent

2:53:11

my whole adult life in the seal

2:53:14

teams. So when I was there, I

2:53:16

knew 100% like, this is the apex

2:53:18

of my life. This is like, nothing

2:53:20

better than this is gonna happen. This

2:53:22

is the best thing ever. And I

2:53:24

knew that. And every day, I knew

2:53:27

that. Like every day, I knew it.

2:53:29

And so, I felt like I had

2:53:31

like a certain level of appreciation, you

2:53:33

know, that even like you talked to

2:53:35

Johnny Kim and some of the other

2:53:37

new guys. That was their first appointment.

2:53:40

It was like, like, they thought all

2:53:42

deployments were gonna be like that. You

2:53:44

know, they're like how do seals like

2:53:46

make it through a 20 year career

2:53:48

if this is what deployment is like

2:53:50

this is freaking crazy So yeah when

2:53:53

you when you feel like it's normal

2:53:55

though you feel like

2:53:57

you did your

2:53:59

job like okay job like

2:54:01

did it I did it now

2:54:03

what's what's next? and so I remember I got

2:54:06

done and been through crazy and so I remember

2:54:08

I got done. was the norm been through was so I kind

2:54:10

of thought this was the norm. right my the beginning of

2:54:12

the war, right? My first point we did the rip,

2:54:14

but even on the second half we got to see

2:54:16

a lot. lot saw a a lot Ramadi. So I was a

2:54:18

little bit ruined. bit And and I and if you were in the if

2:54:20

you were in the in you joined in those early kind of

2:54:22

you got kind of ruined. and I And you were. to

2:54:24

And I talked to those guys through my entire career

2:54:26

all the way out all the way out the way out It's It's

2:54:29

like you grew up a rich kid.

2:54:31

And so And so kind of how you

2:54:33

saw the world. So when the money

2:54:35

went away, the money you were like, You I

2:54:37

don't like this. I don't like this isn't. Yeah,

2:54:39

it'd be much easier to go through

2:54:41

life go having eaten the... eaten a Ribby

2:54:43

steak steak eat eating Burger,

2:54:45

right? You'd be kind of like

2:54:48

burger dude. of like burger dude. I

2:54:50

on a on a burger if I if I

2:54:52

never had a a I'd be totally

2:54:54

stoked stoked, but Do you have a rib a ribby

2:54:56

Now all of a a sudden the the of is

2:54:58

kind getting kind of, kind of so that's kind

2:55:00

of what it was like. of for me,

2:55:02

again, cause I grew up in the me

2:55:04

the teams, there was no war. the 90s grew

2:55:07

up eating burger, no a lot of it.

2:55:09

up So now all of a sudden it

2:55:11

was it So and I knew a bite of

2:55:13

that was I knew I better I relish

2:55:15

that ribeye every single bite. eye I knew I better just

2:55:17

relish I mean, it was, it was good.

2:55:19

So I, I you know, it was

2:55:21

good. So had a good time, a good but

2:55:23

I remember like I want to try something

2:55:25

new and that's when try something went

2:55:27

with you to trade at. when I went

2:55:29

come to trade at, trade it. So you come

2:55:31

start working in SaoK. Did you work

2:55:33

SaoK and CQC? work Yeah, cause at

2:55:35

the time Yeah, wasn't huge. time, so

2:55:37

it was like your group was small.

2:55:39

So your group was of the group was

2:55:42

running SaoK and was working CQC.

2:55:44

The other half was running CQC and

2:55:46

working SaoK. And so we were

2:55:48

gone. were gone. It It was like a

2:55:50

month every other month. other month. I mean,

2:55:52

that's when I got like my when I

2:55:54

got like my I kept for the next

2:55:56

like status that I kept for the next like

2:55:58

12 years. And so. We were

2:56:00

busy. What do you remember

2:56:02

about? So this was a

2:56:04

really pretty amazing thing was

2:56:06

they brought all of task

2:56:08

unit bruiser to Washington DC

2:56:10

and it was for Mikey's

2:56:12

mom and dad. We're gonna

2:56:14

we're gonna receive Mikey's Medal

2:56:17

of Honor and they actually

2:56:19

did it. the ceremony for

2:56:21

him but then they also

2:56:23

did a ceremony for basically

2:56:25

the rest of the guys

2:56:27

and that was that was

2:56:29

a very what's that word

2:56:31

surreal thing to have happened

2:56:33

like to have to go

2:56:35

out there to be at

2:56:37

the Pentagon to be at

2:56:39

the White House and then

2:56:41

to have like the old

2:56:43

frogmen show up and it

2:56:45

was because you know you

2:56:47

got Medal of Honor recipient

2:56:49

it was it was pretty

2:56:51

amazing thing to be a

2:56:53

part of Yeah, it was

2:56:55

How you say as a

2:56:57

23 year old where you

2:56:59

get an invitation to the

2:57:01

White House you go in

2:57:03

you're sitting in the press

2:57:05

room you got G dub

2:57:07

up there like You know

2:57:09

he's awarding this amazing honor

2:57:11

to Mike's parents and it's

2:57:13

just being a part of

2:57:16

that is it's unfortunate that

2:57:18

that had to happen, but

2:57:20

so lucky to have been

2:57:22

a part of that whole,

2:57:24

you know, just being there,

2:57:26

being able to work with

2:57:28

him, being able to be

2:57:30

a part of the ceremony

2:57:32

and see all those things,

2:57:34

be with a seal platoon

2:57:36

in the White House. Honestly,

2:57:38

get a little, uh, little

2:57:40

licked up in the White

2:57:42

House. Which I was still,

2:57:44

this day, shocked that they

2:57:46

let us drink, but they

2:57:48

did. And so it was

2:57:50

in a, and you know,

2:57:52

phenomenal stories that came out

2:57:54

of that like... Secret Service

2:57:56

was cool, I think, for

2:57:58

dealing with us. But that was

2:58:01

so That was so cool know going know, the

2:58:03

to the Pentagon. Do the the med

2:58:05

that I forget the the room where

2:58:07

all the Medal of Honor recipients

2:58:09

are seeing that are seeing that and

2:58:11

Just experiencing that as a

2:58:13

young operator was awesome. was

2:58:16

awesome. It was And then, you

2:58:18

know, you know Tried to the the the scene cops

2:58:20

were pretty savvy to that were pretty savvy to

2:58:22

that. up in the morning and they've got You know, they

2:58:24

wake up in the morning and they've

2:58:26

got like the bottle the they're on

2:58:28

the steps of the Lincoln. this

2:58:31

so after wedding was right after wedding crashers. a So

2:58:33

apparently a bunch of people were trying to

2:58:35

do it. And so they kind of like, hey,

2:58:37

of you guys can't do that here. do that here

2:58:39

they actually became our friends. They gave a bunch

2:58:41

of guys a tour from the tunnels under the

2:58:43

Lincoln. under the And then we ended up, ended up

2:58:45

That's funny because you, you got tours like from,

2:58:47

I got tours for somebody else. I

2:58:49

forget who it was. Somebody else gave me

2:58:51

tours of the tunnels under the else gave me

2:58:53

crazy. the And it was, it was cool

2:58:56

because it was at a time. was,

2:58:58

everybody was so patriotic, so friendly. We're going

2:59:00

around DC. so You know, we had the,

2:59:02

uh, that you know we had the that Navy the

2:59:04

Navy yard in DC where we had other we

2:59:06

had that other then we went into then we

2:59:08

went into the Navy it and it

2:59:10

was all seals at that time. Cause

2:59:12

I didn't know it it no it what it

2:59:14

was through what it was got to to that

2:59:16

stuff. So it was it was one was one

2:59:18

of the one experiences in just

2:59:20

my general lifetime, especially up to that

2:59:22

point. Yeah. I wish I

2:59:24

would have taken pictures of anything in my career,

2:59:27

because I don't have Jack for pictures of

2:59:29

anything in my career. because I But man, I wish

2:59:31

I Jack a bunch of pictures of that whole

2:59:33

thing, man. was just career but an honor to

2:59:35

be a part of that. a bunch of That

2:59:37

whole thing, man. that whole thing man it

2:59:39

was just freaking what an like

2:59:41

I said, be you you a you're of that whole thing man. You know,

2:59:43

know, I always you, I always felt like when I was

2:59:45

training, when I was teaching, I was getting so

2:59:47

much better and I got so much better. Because the

2:59:49

starting when I was an E5, it's team team one, and I worked

2:59:51

and I worked in the the time, at the time and

2:59:54

get to get to see and you get to detach

2:59:56

and you get to watch what works and what doesn't

2:59:58

work. Did you feel that happening when you were at trade-up?
