Welcome to the AI chat podcast. I'm your
0:02
host, Jayden Schaefer. Today on the podcast, we're
0:04
talking about the fact that perplexity has allegedly
0:07
just raised a massive new $500 million round.
0:09
If you're watching this over on YouTube or
0:11
Spotify, you can see the videos and the
0:13
visuals. I'll be sharing my screen and breaking
0:15
down exactly what's going on. If you're on
0:17
Apple, check out the link in the description
0:19
to the YouTube channel. And you can also
0:21
see that. All right. What is really impressive
0:23
is not just the fact that perplexity in
0:25
my opinion has raised this $500 million round
0:27
and warranted. I'll say that they've refused to
0:29
kind of comment on the story, but this
0:31
is essentially the rumors coming out this closed in
0:33
December. But what's interesting to
0:35
me is that they are also actively acquiring
0:37
companies. They're not slowing down. We'll, we'll get
0:39
into all of that in the podcast today.
0:42
I think this is an absolutely fascinating story.
0:44
Before we get into it, I wanted to
0:46
mention, if you've ever wanted to start an
0:48
AI side hustle or grow and scale your
0:50
current business or however you make money using
0:52
AI tools, I would love to have you
0:54
as a member of the AI hustle school
0:56
community. We have dozens and dozens of videos.
0:58
We have over six different courses that break
1:00
down exactly how. I have
1:02
been able to do that. So every single
1:04
week, my co -host and I, Jamie, we
1:07
release an exclusive video that's essentially covering
1:09
a tool, a strategy, how much money we
1:11
make, what tools we use, what exact
1:13
side hustles we use, how we're growing our
1:15
businesses, all the stuff we can't share
1:17
publicly, really exact numbers and tools and workflows
1:19
all inside of this, uh, inside of
1:21
this. Yeah. Hustle school community. And
1:23
we create courses and videos. breaking it down.
1:26
It's $19 a month. We have a
1:28
holiday special last month. It was $100, but
1:30
as a holiday special, we're making this
1:32
$19 a month. So if you've ever wanted
1:34
to join, this would be an amazing
1:36
time to do so. You can get a
1:38
link in the description to find the
1:40
AI hustle school community, join our incredible community,
1:42
join our incredible classroom, get a lot
1:45
of amazing stuff every single week. Okay. Let's
1:47
get into the podcast. So. They've
1:49
raised this $500 million round. What
1:51
is their exact valuation? This
1:54
values the startup at $9
1:56
billion. This is absolutely incredible to
1:58
watch how fast they have been, um,
2:00
growing and actually moving. So all
2:02
of this apparently was reported by.
2:05
Bloomberg who has a bit of
2:07
an inside scoop on this allegedly.
2:09
So this will be interesting to
2:11
see how this continues to roll
2:13
out in the future. So they
2:15
were apparently citing some familiar sources,
2:18
which said that the land, the
2:20
round was actually led by institutional
2:22
venture partners. Um, it closed earlier
2:24
in December and there's still
2:26
being pretty tight lipped about it. No one
2:28
wants to talk about it, but this huge.
2:30
new tranche that they've just pulled in is
2:32
coming as this whole area is really heating
2:34
up, right? So perplexity is known for being
2:36
kind of this competitor to Google and the
2:39
AI space with a lot of their AI
2:41
tools, but they're not the only ones doing
2:43
this. Now Google is trying to compete more
2:45
heavily with them. Open AI recently launched their
2:47
chat GPT search, which is, you know, trying
2:49
to be a competitor to them. They got
2:51
quite serious about it back in October of
2:53
October 31st on this. Now I would say.
2:56
They have a lot of really cool things
2:58
over on chat, GPT that they've started to add.
3:00
For example, restaurants. Um, if you do like
3:02
a search for the best restaurant near me, chat,
3:04
GPT is now able to give you like
3:06
much more, what you call rich results. So you
3:08
can imagine, um, you know,
3:10
there's like images. So if
3:13
you search for something like, you
3:15
know, uh, best food place
3:17
in Toronto, for example, um,
3:19
hopefully that works because Canada has
3:21
some interesting laws, but in any
3:23
case, typically, um, yeah. Okay.
3:25
Toronto is a bad example. By
3:27
the way, I'm live asking chat GPT
3:29
this, uh, well, I did this,
3:31
um, and they did not want to
3:33
give me, uh, they didn't want
3:35
to give me anything. Actually, you know
3:38
what? Here's a real problem on chat GPT
3:40
right now. And it says that search
3:42
is unavailable. Anyways, maybe that's because I got
3:44
started with 01. So we got to
3:46
go to an older model, um, to be
3:48
able to use this and, um, Let's
3:50
see. In any case, all right. So if
3:52
you ask for best food places near
3:54
me, chatGPT is now adding some images. Um,
3:57
all right. I tried it again and
3:59
I, you really have to know exactly what to, how
4:01
to work chatGPT. And this is actually a perfect
4:03
example of why perplexity is doing good. So this is
4:05
the whole thing that I've just been talking about. I,
4:09
I initially went to chatGPT and I said
4:11
best food places in Toronto. It just gave
4:13
me kind of like a list of some
4:15
places. Um, but no pictures. It's just a
4:17
basic chatGP response with texts that you would.
4:19
typically expect. And that is because chat should
4:21
be by default had me selected on their
4:23
01 model. It's the most advanced model, but
4:25
the problem is their most advanced model doesn't
4:27
have the search built in. So I had
4:29
to go manually switch to go to GP
4:31
chat, should be T4O go and select to
4:33
have search enabled. And once I did that
4:35
and made a search, it pulled up this
4:37
really cool looking map. which had, you know, cited
4:39
sources, which you could click to get
4:41
directions. You could go to their website. You
4:43
could call them. Um, you could kind
4:46
of scroll through a bunch of different things.
4:48
It feels very Google, very search
4:50
engine esque. There's a lot of like
4:52
really cool. Um, you
4:54
know, there's a lot of really cool things. If
4:56
you click on getting directions, it's going to
4:58
open you straight up to, to go and actually
5:00
get directions. Um, on maps. So that sounds
5:02
awesome. But the problem is I had to go
5:04
jump through a bunch of hoops. And when
5:07
I did my first search, it didn't just automatically,
5:09
uh, give me what I wanted. So I
5:11
think for this reason, um, perplexity
5:13
is still going to be beating chat, GPD.
5:15
And I don't think it's going to be
5:17
this huge competition because you can imagine like people
5:19
aren't going to want to click through all
5:21
of those hoops. Uh, perplexity really is streamlined. And
5:24
so I think this is going to be,
5:26
um, opening,
5:28
I really would have to, to fix some of
5:30
that to, uh, to, to solve the
5:32
problem. So I don't think that's going to be an issue.
5:34
Anyways, there's a, there's a competition.
5:36
Chatchapiti is doing this. Google is doing this,
5:38
but Google might actually do something new,
5:40
which is a little bit maybe scared for
5:42
perplexity, but we'll see. I think perplexity
5:44
so far has been pretty far out and
5:47
ahead. Um, the information this,
5:49
this week reported that Google is planning
5:51
to take a little bit more of
5:53
a approach where they're going to be creating
5:55
actual. chatbot and AI mode
5:57
that's built straight into search.
5:59
That's super, um, super integrated
6:01
that hopefully is going to compete with
6:03
perplexity because up until this point, we've
6:05
seen, you know, Google adds some AI
6:07
summaries at the top and chat GPT
6:10
sort of added GPT search, but nothing
6:12
really competing with perplexity as I've just.
6:14
demonstrated live on here. Um, and so I
6:16
think this is a big issue for
6:18
a lot of these players. Perplexity really is
6:20
just scooping up a ton of market.
6:23
And I think that, you know, some of
6:25
the big players are getting quite concerned
6:27
about this. So with all of this being
6:29
said, perplexity is not just resting. They're
6:31
continuing to go. And that is because
6:33
they've actually went and acquired a
6:35
new company called. carbon. This is really
6:37
interesting. This is kind of
6:39
their, one of their first acquisitions, but carbon
6:41
is essentially helping you to connect AI search to
6:43
your work files. So you can imagine right
6:45
at your office, right on your computer, you have
6:47
all these files. You want to use AI
6:49
to search through them all. And carbon is helping
6:51
you do that. Perplexity is now helping you
6:53
do that. So you can imagine with perplexity, you
6:55
can search, get an incredible search engine, but
6:57
at the same time you're searching through all of
6:59
your local fire files. This makes it so
7:01
much more competitive, so much more useful.
7:03
And when a company like Google comes out,
7:05
Google's trying to do this in their
7:08
own way where they're letting you search through,
7:10
um, you know, your Gmail and your,
7:12
uh, docs, maybe with some of their Gemini
7:14
assistance, but they're not going to have
7:16
the local files on your computer. Maybe PDFs
7:18
you. created in Canva or other places
7:20
and downloaded, um, or Microsoft files. And so
7:22
perplexity, getting all the access to this,
7:24
I think is going to be a massive
7:26
game changer. We know that most companies
7:28
do not use Google, you know, free suite.
7:30
Usually it's, uh, different tools out
7:32
of Microsoft like PowerPoint and, um,
7:34
you know, Microsoft word and all of that kind of
7:36
stuff. And so I think this is going to
7:38
be absolutely massive. I'm super excited to see where this
7:41
goes and I'll keep you up to date on
7:43
all of it.
