0:34

Real Thoughts as we get ready

0:36

for Super Bowl 59. What are you

0:38

thinking Tommy? What's up buddy? I said

0:40

not real thoughts strategy. We can't be totally

0:42

unfiltered. We have to still have our I

0:44

still have my media face on. I got

0:47

a big game this week. I'm still in

0:49

game playing, but I did a lot of

0:51

prep last week. And I kind of treated

0:53

it like a player. I got a lot

0:55

of film done early in the week. So

0:57

now as I get in the Super Bowl week,

0:59

just little nuance changes here and there,

1:01

but I'm ready to go for a great

1:04

game. It should be a really fun Super

1:06

Bowl. Bill this this this is

1:08

the lead up and everybody now

1:10

converging on New Orleans. It's an

1:13

NBA story that has taken over.

1:15

Luca getting traded and it's kind

1:17

of outshined and and diminished to

1:19

a certain effect the arrivals of

1:22

the team but that will diminish

1:24

too as he now settles in

1:26

as a Laker and Anthony Davis

1:28

becomes a Dallas Maverick but Super

1:31

Bowl week now upon us. So when

1:33

did you try and get the guys to

1:35

stop all of the extraneous things

1:37

that would be going on. Is

1:39

it over now, the tickets, the

1:42

families, the whole deal? No. It's just

1:44

beginning. That happens in the in

1:46

your home city probably after Tuesday.

1:49

You get all the travel and

1:51

stuff out of the way and

1:53

you practice like Wednesday, Thursday, Thursday,

1:56

Friday, Saturday, whatever it is. Then

1:58

when you get down to New Orleans

2:00

either Sunday or today, whichever day

2:03

you travel on, then Tuesday's

2:05

media day, Wednesday, and Thursday of

2:07

all the media there, and then

2:09

Thursday night the families come, and

2:12

then Friday is, you know, then

2:14

the circus is, you know, it goes

2:16

from a two ring to a three

2:18

ring circus, and by Saturday. You know,

2:20

you're just ready to play the

2:22

game, but no, it's just starting.

2:24

It's just starting and now's the time

2:26

when the players are going to have

2:28

to say no to somebody. It could be

2:31

their uncle, it could be their

2:33

college, you know, friends, it could

2:35

be people who have these amazing

2:37

business deals for them because they're in

2:39

the Super Bowl, but it's time to say

2:41

no and focus on the game. In our

2:43

first Super Bowl coach and I were in,

2:46

I was, But I always said the bandwagon

2:48

was pretty small at that point. So it

2:50

was like people were coming to the game,

2:52

you there to get six or eight tickets,

2:54

your family, immediate family, and that was it,

2:56

maybe your college roommate. And then by the

2:58

10th Super Bowl, that bandwagon was so full.

3:01

And the problem is no one ever gets

3:03

off the bandwagon. So you're on that thing.

3:05

And then it was. I needed 92 tickets

3:07

and it was like how did I get

3:09

to 92 tickets and how am I cutting

3:11

people down because they came the last one

3:13

and then I always people want to come

3:15

and I was so exhausted by you know

3:18

trying to sort through who was coming and

3:20

where they were staying and Fortunately I had

3:22

some support over the years, but that's the

3:24

thing with some of these teams and I

3:26

think the chiefs are probably dealing with a

3:28

little bit of that that bandwagon is is

3:31

pretty full and You know, it's going to

3:33

come all that circus is moving its

3:35

way down to New Orleans and there's

3:37

still a lot of distractions to be

3:39

dealt with. Jim, it's great when you're

3:41

there, you know, Thursday, Friday, getting ready

3:43

for the game and one of your

3:45

players comes behind and goes, you know,

3:47

hey coach, you know, I was supposed

3:49

to have a king size bed and

3:51

I got a queen and that kind

3:53

of, oh my god. Well, coach actually

3:55

did give up in this first Super

3:57

Bowl, he gave up his room, the

3:59

lawyer, the. the hotel and coach was

4:01

like, just take my room. And then

4:03

he went down to lawyer's room. Did

4:05

you like lawyer's room? Was it okay?

4:07

You know, I wasn't in it much.

4:09

You know, because you're there preparing all

4:11

day. It was a crummy room. I

4:13

could see why he's complaining, but Lourer

4:15

was happy because he walked in my

4:18

room and they had some crackers and

4:20

snacks and you know, it was pretty

4:22

funny. I'm glad he and yeah. Hey

4:24

Tommy, you know, this is the kind

4:26

of question that it's it's hard to

4:28

assess, but what do you remember most

4:30

about about your time and winning these

4:32

Super Bowls together? You know, when I

4:34

think of each game, there's something that

4:36

sticks out a little bit different from

4:38

each game. And yeah, it's the game,

4:40

but it's the post game party or

4:42

it's the pre game, you know, some

4:44

pre week bus rides and or it

4:47

was something that happened at practice. So

4:49

all the memories. are all a little

4:51

bit different and different ones kind of

4:53

stick out from time to time. There

4:55

were so many great ones from the

4:57

first one in New Orleans. I remember

4:59

we were, you know, I didn't even

5:01

know if I was, I thought I

5:03

was going to play spraying my ankle

5:05

pretty good. I remember walking to Coach

5:07

Bellechec's room on Wednesday after practice because

5:09

he was like, hey, I don't know

5:11

if you're going to play with us

5:14

here, your ankle does. And I remember

5:16

walking to his room. on a Wednesday

5:18

and he said okay all right you

5:20

know you're good to go you're starting

5:22

you know just that's like like that

5:24

like yesterday almost anyway there's different things

5:26

from the first the first Super Bowl

5:28

I took a nap in the locker

5:30

room before the game which is Hard

5:32

to even imagine, but when you're so

5:34

young and you have no idea the

5:36

enormity of the situation which you're getting

5:38

into you take a nap You know

5:41

in my 18 in 2018 after I'd

5:43

been through all those and some losses

5:45

I didn't sleep much at all You

5:47

know, and it's just like that The

5:49

enormity really sinks in and I think

5:51

the more you The longer you play,

5:53

they realize, shit, this is a big

5:55

deal, you know? And when you're young,

5:57

you don't think, oh, you know, I

5:59

was in college and we played in

6:01

bowl games, well, we won that game.

6:03

Oh, now I'm playing in the pros

6:05

and we won in the playoffs and

6:07

now we're going to the Super Bowl.

6:10

And then after you lose a few

6:12

Super Bowl, you're like, all right, this

6:14

is a big deal, you know. I'd

6:16

much rather win than lose. And then

6:18

then you get a lot of sleepless

6:20

nights. And then you get a lot

6:22

of sleepless nights. Bill do you think

6:24

that the enormity now hits Patrick Mahomes

6:26

and you read the enormity of trying

6:28

to three peat? I think they'll just

6:30

focus on the game. Everybody else is

6:32

talking about it but internally I think

6:34

that they're mature discipline and and really

6:37

aware enough to not worry about that.

6:39

It is what it is. It's really

6:41

it's a one game season for them

6:43

and you just put everything you have

6:45

into the next 65, 70 plays ever

6:47

many is you have to win. But

6:49

you know. One thing that I remember

6:51

a very vivid memory, I'm sure Tom

6:53

remembers it too, is in Super Bowl

6:55

39 against Philadelphia down in Jacksonville, you

6:57

know, we had, you know, a big

6:59

play we'd worked on in practice was

7:01

Fourier was gonna go up on the

7:04

goal line and hook, and then he

7:06

was gonna run a double move and,

7:08

you know, the linebacker would jump him

7:10

and then he'd, you know, wrap around

7:12

him on a double move for a

7:14

touchdown. And so we must have hit

7:16

it 10 times in practice. So now

7:18

we're on the five-yard line and we

7:20

call to play in the game and

7:22

I look at Fourier and he runs

7:24

out and it goes to the goal

7:26

and falls down. He falls straight down.

7:28

So that's Tom's guy. So I look

7:30

out the branch, branch is in the

7:33

slot and they double covered him and

7:35

the safety in the nickel bag double

7:37

covered him and you couldn't get a

7:39

slice of bread between him and either

7:41

defender defender. And I'm like, oh my

7:43

God. And then Tom goes outside to

7:45

David Gibbons, who was kind of a,

7:47

it's just, he was kind of a

7:49

runoff guy, you know, on the play.

7:51

He wasn't really part of the play,

7:53

he was, but it was. really good

7:55

play. And then Tom throws his back

7:57

shoulder throw to him and Givens comes

8:00

back and I'm sure he can get

8:02

the ball one time in practice on

8:04

that play. And then of course he

8:06

does the fly equals fly and all

8:08

that but it was I thought it

8:10

was Tom one of your greatest plays

8:12

and you know the big game where

8:14

it's like Fourier on the ground branch

8:16

double Givens and then make that back

8:18

shoulder throw on a pile on it

8:20

was. and I just watched it go

8:22

all the way out there and I

8:24

was going, oh my god, oh my

8:27

god, great play, great play. No, no,

8:29

no, no, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

8:31

For sure, I know, that was, that

8:33

was a great one. Coach, I got

8:35

a question for you. When you see

8:37

Andy Reed. and his, you know, going

8:39

to the Super Bowl like this and

8:41

you've known him probably better than most.

8:43

What do you think makes him such

8:45

a great coach from a coaching standpoint?

8:47

Because I think you know what it

8:49

means to be a great coach. You've

8:51

been with a lot of other great

8:53

coaches. What do you admire about him

8:56

as a coach? Well, number one, I

8:58

think he's got a very well balanced

9:00

team. You know, they've won this year

9:02

on offense defense special teams. They returned

9:04

kicks the last two weeks. They blocked

9:06

a kick last week. They blocked a

9:08

kick. They've made defensive stops, which they

9:10

didn't do against us, you know, after

9:12

he changed coordinators from Sutton to Spags.

9:14

And he's just got a really well

9:16

balanced team. Offensively, you know. the way

9:18

they do their play sheet and all

9:20

I think is is honestly you know

9:23

it's great you know they have their

9:25

their plays that they really really know

9:27

well and then they have you know

9:29

some other plays that they're pretty good

9:31

on and then they maybe have one

9:33

or two plays that you know they've

9:35

only done those a few times and

9:37

and they can only have a couple

9:39

of those plays that make sure they

9:41

don't up with too many of those

9:43

plays that they're not you know super

9:45

confident in the execution and I think

9:47

when you watch them execute they're they're

9:50

really good but I think the big

9:52

key for this game, just like the

9:54

last time they played them, is going

9:56

to be the mesh of the pass

9:58

rush for Philly with their coverage. Philly's

10:00

got a good rush, can't say they'll

10:02

have a hard time blocking them, but

10:04

the way Philly matches all those routes

10:06

in their man matches, if my homes

10:08

gets through the line, you know, there's

10:10

a lot of room for him to

10:12

scramble and they're gonna have to mesh

10:14

that rush with their matched coverage and

10:16

then, you know, Andy got them on

10:19

a couple of stacked looks and all

10:21

that where they missed a match on

10:23

it and guys are wide open and

10:25

Philly's gonna have to make sure, you

10:27

know, you know, Coach, another question I

10:29

got for you. Because when I watched

10:31

the game and watched it from a

10:33

quarterback standpoint, and I'm always like, well,

10:35

what would I have done? What I

10:37

have done? Did I really think that

10:39

was a great throw? Did I think

10:41

that was a bad throw, a bad

10:43

read? Why did we run that concept

10:46

into that defense? When you're watching games,

10:48

how do you, what perspective do you

10:50

take? Do you look at it more

10:52

as like, okay, if I was a

10:54

decordinator, what I'd be doing? I'm sure

10:56

we're a little tortured by, like when

10:58

I see something really good, I'm like,

11:00

damn, that's hard to do. You know,

11:02

and then when I think like other

11:04

things like, well, I wasn't that hard.

11:06

That was an easy throw. What do

11:08

you, how do you view the game

11:10

from your perspective? Honestly, Tom, probably opposite

11:13

of you, you know, you look at

11:15

through a quarterback size. I kind of

11:17

look at, you know, what's the defense,

11:19

what are they in, and, you know,

11:21

then how does the play unfold, but...

11:23

You're right, at the end of some

11:25

of those plays, you know, as we

11:27

get that second look at it and

11:29

we're not on to the next play,

11:31

you get to look back and say,

11:33

like, wow, that was really well-designed or,

11:35

boy, they really screwed that up. That

11:37

shouldn't have been a problem at all

11:40

and they completely, you know, busted it.

11:42

So it's fun to kind of do

11:44

that, you know, I don't say instant

11:46

analysis, but, you know, on the real-time

11:48

analysis. It's just that's a lot of

11:50

fun compared to looking back at the

11:52

game, you know a day later when

11:54

you can run it back ten times

11:56

It makes you think a lot quicker

11:58

and move on to those situations That's

12:00

why I think it's so hard what

12:02

you do. You do a great job.

12:04

You only have a few seconds to

12:06

explain what either what happened or what's

12:09

going to happen because they're on the

12:11

line of scrimmage right to snap the

12:13

ball and you know you just don't

12:15

have a lot of time to get

12:17

into depth but I mean you do

12:19

it very quickly and concisely it's a

12:21

real skill. Yeah I was pretty quick.

12:23

If you had if you had to

12:25

stop Saekwan Barkley and this is interesting

12:27

because the thought is always well we're

12:29

going to load the box. And the

12:31

reality, he averages more yards per carry

12:33

against a loaded box than he does

12:36

against a light box. So when they've

12:38

got one more, then the offense can

12:40

block, he's gained more yards on a

12:42

yards per carry basis than when it's

12:44

an even box. So how, in your

12:46

mind, if you were the decordinator for,

12:48

if you were spags, how do you

12:50

slow Saekwan down? I think the overruners

12:52

rushing yards is like 130 for this

12:54

game. But in the playoffs, I mean,

12:56

he's going for 150 50, 160, 160.

12:58

You know, as you begin the game

13:00

plan for this, how do you slow

13:03

him down? Yeah, I think the big

13:05

thing for him is the home runs.

13:07

You know, you stack the line and

13:09

he splits it and it's a 70

13:11

yarder. That's the problem. The key really

13:13

is the tackling for the weak safety.

13:15

Whoever is my best tackler at weak

13:17

safety or the second level player. That's

13:19

who I would play. I would get

13:21

my best tacklers in the secondary and

13:23

get them on the ground and make

13:25

it an eight-yard game. It's just a

13:27

free safety like in a Rams game.

13:29

He missed him twice and you know

13:32

160 and 178 or whatever it was.

13:34

So tackling is huge. That's where you

13:36

know Dev McCordy was such a good

13:38

player for us Rodney Harrison. Yeah. Even

13:40

Eugene Wilson like those guys were dependable

13:42

tacklers in the secondary and runs were

13:44

eight yards, nine yards, you know, they

13:46

weren't 79. And those are the ones

13:48

that you got to, you can't let

13:50

those happen. If you can get Philadelphia

13:52

into a lot of third down situations,

13:54

I mean, I think, you know, you

13:56

got a chance to get. off the

13:59

field, but the saiquemont gets it in

14:01

one. That's why I think loating the

14:03

box, you know, like in short yards

14:05

and things like that. You gotta be

14:07

careful with him because if he splits

14:09

it, you know, it's all over. He's

14:11

got this unbelievable ability, you know, like

14:13

his state. They've charted 20 plus mile

14:15

an hour runs this year. There's been

14:17

11 and he's at 6 to the

14:19

11, but he's running so fast at

14:21

the line of scrimmage. It's been kind

14:23

of unusual. You know, but I think

14:26

Saikwan has a little more strength to

14:28

run through some tackles. But it's just,

14:30

it's unbelievable how he's, you know, we

14:32

never saw these things show up. I

14:34

mean, they showed up in, like I

14:36

said, points when he was with the

14:38

Giants. But now it's like every week,

14:40

it's like, oh, there's another 70-yarder. And

14:42

it's like, how do you get... I've

14:44

never seen an explosive rushing throwing the

14:46

ball than throwing the ball. Well I

14:48

think what he does so well is

14:50

he's you know he's a good lateral

14:52

runner he gets into the line of

14:55

scrimmage and jumps laterally but then he

14:57

has that one step burst to get

14:59

through the line and clear so he

15:01

kind of skates skate skate and then

15:03

hit it and and that ability to

15:05

skate laterally with such good quickness he

15:07

sucks the linebackers in a little bit

15:09

they over pursue and then he gets

15:11

through that space and runs through the

15:13

arm tackle I mean. He doesn't just

15:15

like hit the hole like the Corey

15:17

Dylans and those guys did. He really

15:19

can jump later. I don't want to

15:22

say like Barry Sanders, but like there's

15:24

an element of Barry Sanders with him

15:26

where he can just slide up and

15:28

down a lot. Now if it's there,

15:30

he'll take it. But he can kind

15:32

of slide up and down a line

15:34

of scrimmage with a lot of speed

15:36

and power. And you know, that's how

15:38

he, you know, he gets into space

15:40

and then he, he beats the second

15:42

level of defender. And he's tough as

15:44

hell. You know his uncle is Iran

15:46

Barkley who fought Tommy Hearns and Roberto

15:49

Duran and he was he was a

15:51

terrific champion. Iran Barkley fought all of

15:53

these guys and now when I see

15:55

him and there's there's a big of

15:57

a facial, you know, they look alike

15:59

to a certain extent and his toughness,

16:01

Tommy, I mean, but he has the

16:03

lineage of a guy who is, he

16:05

was an unbelievable fighter. I don't know

16:07

if you remember I ran Barkley. Yeah,

16:09

unbelievable. Just that toughness runs deep and

16:11

I think he, everyone talks about the

16:13

way that he's really a culture driver

16:15

for that organization and just by showing

16:18

up and doing a job and not

16:20

being selfish, not being a diva, you

16:22

know, not just showing up every week

16:24

with a great attitude, praising his teammates,

16:26

doing what you should do if you're

16:28

an athlete in the team sport. It's

16:30

not about him. Every time they talk

16:32

about him, he talks about his O-line,

16:34

and I just, I love that. He

16:36

does and should talk about it, the

16:38

receivers. And Tom, you know, when you

16:40

have a back that can go the

16:42

distance, like when we had Corey Dylan

16:45

and guys like that. the receivers block

16:47

harder because they know if they make

16:49

that block it could be a long

16:51

run and so you know you watch

16:53

AJ Brown and Smith even though Smith's

16:55

light he's out a bad blocker and

16:57

he'll try to stick it in there

16:59

and and you know create enough congestion

17:01

so that that those 10-yard runs can

17:03

be you know long balls and those

17:05

guys they block hard because they know

17:07

they're they're good blockers anyway if they

17:09

block hard because they know if they

17:12

make their block it could be a

17:14

home run ball. Jim Gray with Tom

17:22

17:24

that perfect steak and unrival dining experience.

17:26

Visit mortons.com for reservations. Tommy, you grew

17:28

up rooting for history. You were a

17:30

huge Michael Jordan fan. You saw those

17:32

three feats. And they propelled you to

17:34

a certain extent to want to be

17:36

great. Are you rooting for history here?

17:38

Well, I'm broadcasting the game, so I

17:41

don't really have a rooting interest per

17:43

se. The only thing I root for

17:45

in these situations are great games. I

17:47

will say if the Chiefs win, I

17:49

will be very happy for them. I

17:51

mean, what they've achieved is unmatched. I

17:53

think that's cool because people always hated

17:55

on us for so many years and

17:57

I didn't understand it because all that

17:59

I did was like we try to

18:01

do things the right way we try

18:03

to go out there and compete for

18:05

our job and win and like there's

18:08

an excellence that I appreciate about people

18:10

who are doing other things that really

18:12

high levels because you understand the commitment

18:14

that it takes for them to do

18:16

what they're doing and like to be

18:18

in this country and to not cheer

18:20

for excellence is beyond me. I mean

18:22

we're all all about trying to be

18:24

great at things and to give people

18:26

the opportunity to be great. Like I

18:28

think it's incredible to see this team

18:30

withstand all the adversities they faced over

18:32

the course of not just this season

18:35

or last season the year before. They

18:37

just plowed on. Nothing's distracted them. They've

18:39

just continued to push forward and win

18:41

a lot of games. You gotta play

18:43

a great game of football to beat

18:45

that team. And it's not to say

18:47

they can't be beat, they can be

18:49

beat. And the Eagles can be beat.

18:51

But it's gonna be a terrific game

18:53

because there's a lot on the line

18:55

for both teams. And both teams are

18:57

coming in with a lot of confidence.

18:59

There's some strengths that match up against

19:01

the other teams weakness, which is a

19:04

bit interesting and a game like this,

19:06

but I have nothing. but respect for

19:08

the chief's organization because they've done everything

19:10

the right way and even as we

19:12

compete a coach and I competed against

19:14

them for a long time and Andy

19:16

Reed coach teams they've done an incredible

19:18

job. Yeah I second that and Philadelphia

19:20

has a chance to do what the

19:22

Giants did to us and you know

19:24

wreck their three-pet or you know wreck

19:26

our undefeated season or whatever it is

19:28

and it's a great opportunity for them

19:31

whichever team wins this game will certainly

19:33

deserve to be the champion but they'll

19:35

have their own legacy. You know, Coach

19:37

came up with an idea last week

19:39

and it kind of took off. The

19:41

Brady Trophy. I heard that. I heard

19:43

that. I love him for saying that.

19:45

Thank you. and I don't know I

19:47

think it's pretty great however its name

19:49

so I don't for me I don't

19:51

know it's more humble and flattered than

19:53

anything but never considered anything like that

19:55

I I tell the greatest joy I

19:58

had in playing this game was all

20:00

the people that I got to do

20:02

it with and I loved winning and

20:04

I love competing look I loved as

20:06

I this is the truth at later

20:08

in my career I enjoyed practice and

20:10

more than playing I really did. I

20:12

love practicing and because I guess when

20:14

you get a little older the enormity

20:16

of every individual game we had been

20:18

on so many highs I felt like

20:20

we got there and win and everyone

20:22

expects you to win all the time

20:24

and you know I just want to

20:27

enjoy practice the games were a relief

20:29

to win you know the losses were

20:31

crushing but when you're practicing man you're

20:33

out there having fun so I got

20:35

to play a game let's The best

20:37

guys, I remember at one point I

20:39

was out there on the practice field,

20:41

I'm like, they're paying me to throw

20:43

passes to Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski,

20:45

like, hey, Ronk, run a flag route,

20:47

and he runs it, and I'm like,

20:49

I'm like a fantasy football quarterback, you

20:51

know, and people are paying, you know,

20:54

tens of thousands of dollars to play

20:56

catch with Gronk, and yet I'm getting

20:58

paid to play catch with Gronk, and

21:00

I'm yelling at him, if he doesn't

21:02

would do it the way, do it

21:04

the way, do it the way, the

21:06

way, the way, the way I want

21:08

to do it the way I want

21:10

to do it the way I want

21:12

to do it the way I want

21:14

to do it the way I want.

21:16

I had so much fun doing it

21:18

and there's so many trophies with inside

21:21

of me from playing for coach, playing

21:23

for the Patriots, you know, having so

21:25

many great players that I got to

21:27

throw the ball to and defensive guys

21:29

that I've got the best relationships with

21:31

and that's why I love this game

21:33

and fortunately I get to be involved

21:35

in it from a broadcasting standpoint, I

21:37

get to be involved with it from

21:39

an ownership standpoint and I just want

21:41

to see the game continue to get

21:43

better. Yeah, Tom, winning the games was

21:45

great and then, you know, if we

21:47

didn't cover the spread, they'd boo us.

21:50

But it was, there were so many

21:52

great moments, you're right, but everyone's special.

21:54

and this will be a special one

21:56

for both Kansas City and Philadelphia. And

21:58

this is two great teams, a great

22:00

match up, and yeah, I'm excited. Excited

22:02

to see the game, and I'm excited

22:04

to hear you broadcast at Tom, and

22:06

I'm excited to be part of Fox's

22:08

by your tour down in New Orleans.

22:10

That was a great place for us

22:12

to play and win. Those memories are

22:14

wretched in my mind forever, so. I

22:17

got one great story about Coach before

22:19

we leave. We win the Super Bowl

22:21

Super Bowl in New Orleans. The next

22:23

morning we were going to the MVP

22:25

press conference and Coach gets in the

22:27

car and I think he was over-served

22:29

down there on Bourbon Street. There were

22:31

too many hurricanes that you know someone

22:33

gave him and he got in the

22:35

car and he was like oh man

22:37

that was that was a long night

22:39

so that was that was one of

22:41

those great memories when I think of

22:44

you know winning the Super Bowl yeah

22:46

that was great but some memories like

22:48

that were pretty awesome too. Whoever scheduled

22:50

that press conference after the Super Bowl

22:52

win. Never won a Super Bowl and

22:54

had to go to that press conference.

22:56

Tommy, thanks for joining us here on

22:58

Let's Go. It's been a great season.

23:00

You're a great partner. Have a great

23:02

telecast on Fox. The nation will be

23:04

watching and I know you're going to

23:06

do great. Thanks Gratchy. I appreciate it.

23:08

It's really a great culmination from a

23:10

really fun first season and thank you

23:13

for your love, support, your guidance in

23:15

this. Young broadcasting career of mine. I

23:17

was a rookie this year, but you've

23:19

been a great coach for me. Listen

23:21

to the broadcast, giving me your critiques,

23:23

and we have a very special relationship,

23:25

and I'm grateful for all that you

23:27

do in my life to support me.

23:29

So I love you, pal. And it's

23:31

been another great year on, let's go.

23:33

Love you too, it's been lots of

23:35

fun and we'll be watching you on

23:37

Sunday. Thanks Tommy Moore with Coach Bella

and I continue, winery return right here

23:58

on Let's Go on series. X-M. Welcome

24:00

back to Let's Go. I'm Jim Gray

24:02

along with the great Bill Bellichet. Let's

24:05

Go is brought you by American Express.

24:07

Sometimes you've just got to be there.

24:09

That's when the moment becomes larger than

24:11

life. The roar of the crowd, the

24:13

electricity in the building and with the

24:16

dedicated Amex card member entrance at selected

24:18

venues, you're one step closer to it

24:20

all. You had to be there and

24:22

so you were. That's the powerful backing

24:24

of American Express. So coach you had

24:27

to be there and you have been

24:29

there so many times on the field

24:31

coaching but you're actually going to be

24:33

at Super Bowl 59 aren't you? What's

24:35

that going to be like for you

24:37

to be I want to say a

24:40

fan but a very interested observer? Well

24:42

it's always a great event of course

24:44

and you know I'm honored to be

24:46

there as part of the honors presentation

24:48

program Thursday night when the NFL gives

24:51

out their awards and then mad and

24:53

bust tour which is on as well

24:55

for the game with something like they

24:57

with Tom Mike Strahan and a trip

24:59

through New Orleans about Super Bowl so

25:02

got a couple little events going on

25:04

there. And what about the game itself?

25:06

When you're watching a game in a

25:08

stadium that you're not participating in. Is

25:10

that entertainment to you? Or are you

25:13

analyzing every play? Are you trying to

25:15

figure out how you would beat that

25:17

defense? What goes through you as you

25:19

observe? Well, if there's a strong rooting

25:21

interest, then I'm a fan. If there's

25:24

not a strong reading interest, then I

25:26

kind of try to watch it and

25:28

see what the strategy of the plays

25:30

are and kind of follow along with

25:32

what the coaches are doing strategically. Do

25:34

you have a rooting interest in this?

25:37

Do you care about the outcome? No,

25:39

I have great friends in both organizations

25:41

and a tremendous amount of respect for

25:43

Andy and the Chiefs and, you know,

25:45

the entire Eagles organization, you know, Nick,

25:48

Howey, you know, Jeff Lurie. It's just

25:50

that they're both great organizations. Both great

25:52

teams this year, the tremendous. years and

25:54

really looking forward to it next to

25:56

be a heck of a game. Do

25:59

you root for achievement? Do you want

26:01

to see a three-pet? You know the

26:03

history of professional football as well as

26:05

anybody on the planet. Do you root

26:07

for history or how do you approach

26:10

that aspect of it? Well it's certainly

26:12

a very interesting part of this game

26:14

having been a part of a couple

26:16

of those. The 49ers were attempting to

26:18

three-pet in the 1980 Super Bowl, Super

26:20

Bowl Super Bowl, Super Bowl 25. when

26:23

with the Giants we beat him out

26:25

there in Candlestick and then went and

26:27

beat the Bills in the Super Bowl.

26:29

And then of course, you know, we

26:31

didn't get to the Super Bowl, but

26:34

you know, after winning in 2003 and

26:36

2004, that was a three peat potential

26:38

season for us. So really probably the

26:40

closest we were was 16, 17, and

26:42

18. We lost in the Super Bowl

26:45

to Philadelphia, but that was the one

26:47

in the middle, so it never really

26:49

had a shot at a three peat.

26:51

But it's so hard to do. If

26:53

the chief's going to achieve it, obviously

26:56

it'll be a historical accomplishment. And whatever

26:58

they do, it'll still be history. But

27:00

they're going to have to be a

27:02

good football team in the Eagles. And

27:04

if anybody can keep the chiefs from

27:06

getting that third one, it'll probably be

27:09

Philadelphia. It's a great matchup. Should be

27:11

a heck of a game. Jim Gray

27:13

with Bill Balitecke. We're here on Let's

27:15

Go Hey Coach. How would you attack

27:17

the Kansas City Chiefs if you were

27:20

planning? What would you do that you

27:22

would think would be the most critical

27:24

aspect? of their game offensively or defensively

27:26

that you would choose to attack? Offensively,

27:28

you've got to be prepared to, you

27:31

know, handle pressure blitz packages, especially in

27:33

critical situations, but you could get it

27:35

all game. I think they've got to

27:37

be ready to handle the Kansas City

27:39

Blitz package, you know, defensively. You know,

27:42

Coach Fanjo's got a, is having a

27:44

great year on defense and their players

27:46

have really... I'd say acclimated and adjusted

27:48

well to his defensive schemes and they're

27:50

playing very well. I think the big

27:52

thing for Philadelphia when you play Kansas

27:55

City is if you cover the So

27:57

they're really all man to man, right?

27:59

The Eagles are really all man to

28:01

man on defense. They play a match

28:03

zone. So as soon as the routes

28:06

declare, they match them and it ends

28:08

up in man to man coverage. And

28:10

a lot of times that can stifle

28:12

the quarterback in the passing game. The

28:14

problem with the Kansas City is when

28:17

those guys are all matched up in

28:19

man coverage. If the past rush doesn't

28:21

control Mahomes, then he can scramble out

28:23

of there and make some explosive plays.

28:25

And then Andy will have some coverage

28:28

beers. He'll run some plays that'll be

28:30

hard for Philadelphia to match. And they'll

28:32

really have to be on their toes

28:34

to make sure they have good communication.

28:36

And don't miss any of those matchups

28:38

because I'm and man to man if

28:41

you miss a guy, there's nobody near

28:43

him and you give a lot of

28:45

yards. And what would be the keys

28:47

for the Chiefs the last two weeks

28:49

in the playoffs has been the return

28:52

game. You know, they opened the Houston

28:54

game with a long kickoff kickoff return

28:56

and then they had a 50. Special

28:58

teams is a big key, you know,

29:00

for Kansas City, it'll be, of course,

29:03

stopping Berkeley in the running game without

29:05

giving up explosive plays to, you know,

29:07

those two big play receivers. So, they

29:09

can do a good job of that,

29:11

then enforce Philadelphia into multiple third down

29:14

situations, make them convert on third down,

29:16

but as you say, can't give up

29:18

those long runs to Berkeley or those

29:20

intermediate passes that turn into 20-yard gains

29:22

to the receivers. Jim Gray with Bill

29:25

29:27

29:38

29:40

Bill is going to be sharing a

29:42

lot of that information with the public.

29:44

He's got a brand new book coming

29:46

out. It's going to be released in

29:49

May, but you can go online now

29:51

wherever you get your books, Amazon, go

29:53

to a bookstore, Barnes and Noble, wherever

29:55

you get your books, The Art of

29:57

Winning, by Bill Bellichek. The art of

30:00

winning, that's something you know quite well.

30:02

You've won eight of these Super Bowls.

30:04

Bill, what compelled you to write this

30:06

book? Well, number one time. I had

30:08

an opportunity to do it this year.

30:11

You know, it's a lot of lessons

30:13

that I've learned through my life in

30:15

football. And starting with my dad and

30:17

the Naval Academy, and then for over

30:19

20 years of assistant coaching experience in

30:21

the NFL and coordinating, coaching on both

30:24

sides of the ball and special teams.

30:26

And then as a head coach. with

30:28

the Browns and the Patriots. Of course

30:30

I had a couple head coaching stints

30:32

at the Jets for a short time,

30:35

but we don't talk about those. But

30:37

really just about the lessons I've learned

30:39

and of course a lot of stories

30:41

about leadership and teamwork and motivation and

30:43

preparation and things like that from players

30:46

like Tom Brady and Rodney Harrison, guys

30:48

like that have been, you know, great

30:50

players through the years, Edelman and Cronkowski.

30:52

Brucekey and different lessons that I've learned

30:54

with coaching, working with players, different coaches,

30:57

and that's certainly Parcels, Lawrence Taylor, you

30:59

know, some of the key, key guys

31:01

that I've had great interaction and opportunity

31:03

to experience with. Again, it's the art

31:05

of winning. Remember an interview that I

31:07

did with Coach Wooden, did several interviews

31:10

with him, but one time he told

31:12

me, you know, he'd won all those

31:14

national championships, I believe, and he also

31:16

had undefeated undefeated seasons. said he never

31:18

once mentioned the word win to his

31:21

team. Did you have a similar approach?

31:23

I think a lot of the approach

31:25

to winning would be just day by

31:27

day, you know, having good days, stacking

31:29

good days on top of each other,

31:32

and really the process, and then the

31:34

process leads to winning. So, right, winning

31:36

is kind of the end of the

31:38

game goal. The process is really what

31:40

would get you to that, and really

31:43

in this book we talk a lot

31:45

about the process, which, you know, hopefully

31:47

will result in, and success. The Art

31:49

of Winning by Bill Bellicheck ordered now

31:51

online Amazon or wherever you get your

31:53

book. and we'll talk about this throughout

31:56

the remainder of the season, which is,

31:58

of course, next week. After the Super

32:00

Bowl, let's turn our thoughts back. As

32:02

we wrap up with Coach Bellichek, would

32:04

you keep running the ball? Regardless of

32:07

whatever success Saquan Barkley may or may

32:09

not have in the fourth quarter, would

32:11

you just keep pounding it? Would you

32:13

just try and do what you've been

32:15

successful with? Jim, Dwight Eisenhower had a

32:18

great quote. When he said the most

32:20

important thing when you go into battle

32:22

is the plan, but once you get

32:24

into the battle, you fight the battle.

32:26

The planning kind of goes out the

32:29

window. You see what the fight is

32:31

and you react to it. And I

32:33

think that's football is a little bit

32:35

like that. You have a plan going

32:37

in, but at some point, you know,

32:39

you may have to adjust those plans.

32:42

If you see that there's a better

32:44

way to do things or they've taken

32:46

something away, you alter that plan of

32:48

attack. Yeah, Jim, I can remember having

32:50

this conversation with Tom on the sideline.

32:53

And, you know, we've tried the running

32:55

game and, you know, we get close

32:57

to half-time and we're averaging two yards

32:59

a carry and kind of look at

33:01

each other and say, okay, have you

33:04

seen enough? Yeah, I've seen enough. I've

33:06

seen enough too. Let's forget the running

33:08

game here. We've got to start putting

33:10

the ball in the air if we're

33:12

going to win. And, you know, sometimes

33:15

you have to do you have to

33:17

do you have to do that? Well,

33:19

it could go either way. It could

33:21

go either way. But, you know, you

33:23

go into the game with a plan

33:26

and if it just, you feel like

33:28

it's not working or you have better

33:30

options somewhere else and those plays are

33:32

the ones that are, you feel like

33:34

you have more success with. At some

33:36

point, you have to adjust that game

33:39

plan and go to what you need

33:41

to do in that game. Coach, as

33:43

always, we appreciate your time. Enjoy New

33:45

Orleans. We'll be watching you on Sunday

33:47

on Fox as part of your special.

33:50

It's part of the pregame show, Jim.

33:52

I think it's around noon or something

33:54

like that, but it's Tom and Mike

33:56

Strahan and just the Man Bus Tour

33:58

through. New Orleans. Great being on the

34:01

mad bus, that was a lot of

34:03

fun and you know reliving some of

34:05

the the great memories and great players

34:07

and games that were played in the

34:09

Superdome in New Orleans. Luckily we were

34:12

in one of them Super Bowl 36.

34:14

I spent a lot of time on

34:16

the Madden Cruiser. We had a great

34:18

great time. The drivers Dave and Willie

34:20

went all over the country with Coach

34:22

Madden and great memories of him and

34:25

he kind of personified what it's all

34:27

about and so much fun and it's

34:29

going to be fun in New Orleans

34:31

and we look forward to seeing you

34:33

down there. Thanks coach, we'll talk to

34:36

you next Monday night as we wrap

34:38

up the season and on our final

34:40
