In this special episode of the Mudfish Adventures Podcast, Captain Steve “Scooby” Stubbe sits down with none other than Pat Murray, President of the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA). With over two decades of leadership at CCA and a deep history as a professional fishing guide in Galveston Bay, Pat shares his remarkable journey from Texas waters to leading one of the most influential conservation organizations in the country.

🎙️ Topics covered in this episode include:

  • The origins and mission of the Coastal Conservation Association, born in 1977 by 14 concerned anglers in Houston.

  • The historic legislative battle that banned harmful gillnetting practices and saved redfish populations.

  • How CCA helped launch marine hatcheries across Texas that have now released over 1 billion fish—including red drum, speckled trout, and southern flounder—into Gulf waters.

  • CCA’s nationwide impact, with chapters from Texas to Florida, California to Maryland, all dedicated to protecting our coastal ecosystems.

  • The rise of illegal red snapper fishing by cartel-backed panga fleets, and how CCA is advocating with U.S. lawmakers for stronger enforcement.

  • The importance of oyster reef restoration and how oysters—nature’s water filters—support entire marine ecosystems and redfish habitats.

  • Why CCA’s STAR Tournament draws 50,000 anglers each year with millions in prizes and scholarships, and how it's building the next generation of conservationists.

  • Insights into mariculture, aquaculture sustainability, redfish farming, and the challenges of fishmeal-based feedstocks.

Pat also shares his passion for fly fishing and the beauty of handcrafted rods that reflect both artistry and utility, and offers advice for getting young anglers into the sport and into conservation.

💥 Whether you're a lifelong fisherman, a conservationist, or just someone who loves the Gulf Coast, this episode is packed with insights and inspiration from a true leader in marine resource advocacy.

Mudfish Adventures

Hey, I am Capt. Steve Stubbe, I have been working and playing on the water since 1977 from the Texas Gulf Coast to the Canadian tundra – hunting, fishing, working, a member of several bass clubs, fishing tournaments, guided for the Sunshine kids fishing tournament (fresh & salt water) for several years and attended seaman schools.I was a regular guest on The Bob Stevenson’s Outdoor Show (610 Sports in Houston) for three years. My wife (Tamie) and I were given the opportunity to start our own radio show. I was the host of an AM radio talk show in Houston on Saturday mornings for 52 weeks. This call-in talk show was named TechReps and was based on technical pros talking about mechanical repairs and the outdoor sporting goods industry. It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot.I was traveling to Venice, Louisiana for work and noticed a boat running in a canal with heavy vegetation and logs and this boat operator did not slow down. That’s when I said to myself “I need to find that boat manufacture (GatorTail)! That’s the boat I need for Toledo Bend Lake”. I called the GatorTail factory and with their boat building guidance they built me a custom boat to my specifications. It’s mind blowing all the places I could see from my fiberglass boat but just couldn’t get there. Now my GatorTail boat can get me there. This rig has changed the way I fish. Let me take you there! When I took my friends out fishing they would always mention that it was more like an adventure than fishing. This inspired me to start Mudfish Adventures, LLC fishing guide service so other people could experience the beauty of the backcountry of Toledo Bend Lake. I am able to guide a two person party to the fishing flats and backcountry (with no boat pressure) on Toledo Bend’s Palo Gaucho area and the Mid Lake area. Capt. Scooby specializes in Bass on The Fly or conventional fishing. Book your trip today, call 1-844-MUD-FISH.
