it's five o'clock and you're off the clock with beast guy

0:02

. Now today we have james wood

0:04

with us . Now . He's a mutual friend through

0:07

otis from the aba . He said you need

0:09

to get this guy on here . He used to be a bull rider

0:11

, crazy awesome dude and

0:13

he's an absolute killer . So

0:15

I've heard a little bit of stories about this guy

0:17

. He's kind of a he's

0:19

special . I don't really know how to put

0:21

my finger on it . This dude , he's got a lot going on

0:23

. I've seen alligators and some hogs , deer

0:26

wood arrows

0:28

, homemade bows . This

0:30

guy's got a lot going on and , uh , I'm ready

0:32

to pick his brain . I'm sure he's got some stories . Anyway

0:35

, let's get right into it . Make sure you leave a like

0:37

, subscribe and hit the bell for notifications . Let's

0:42

get right into this thing . Man , thank you for coming

0:44

today . My pleasure . Thank y'all

0:46

. You're an interesting

0:48

individual . All right for one traditional

0:51

bow making and arrows

0:53

. So there's people shoot recurve bows

0:56

and stuff , but not many people that are slinging

0:58

you know , wooden arrows

1:00

that they made themselves . Yeah , so tell me a little

1:02

bit about yourself , how you got into it , and

1:05

just man , give me a spill , well

1:07

uh I

1:09

am just turned 47

1:11

and I've been hunting since I was a little peewee

1:14

.

1:14

I mean , when I was six or

1:16

eight years old , my

1:19

parents would take me down to south george and

1:21

drop me off at my great uncle and

1:24

he'd fix me old pillowcase

1:26

with biscuits , oh yeah , a canteen

1:29

of water , and take me five miles down the road

1:31

and drop me off with a 22 . That's where I learned

1:33

to hunt squirrels

1:36

I mean squirrels , quail

1:38

, whatever you know and

1:40

I loved it . That's . That's

1:42

how I got into hunting . And uh , it

1:45

just evolved from there , you know , to

1:47

rifle , to compound . I started

1:49

compound hunting when I was in middle school , killed

1:52

my first deer when I was in seventh grade

1:54

. I think , oh heck , yeah , and I

1:56

, I , uh , bow

1:58

hunted ever since , uh , and

2:00

but back in them days when gun season

2:02

come in , I'd hang the rifle , right

2:05

, I'd hang the bow up , just you go rifle

2:07

yeah , you know back then , but uh

2:09

, I think when

2:12

uh in in 1999

2:16

I joined the marine corps , I went out , I got sent

2:18

to hawaii . That was my first duty station

2:20

and was in hawaii . Yeah , I went out there with

2:22

a sea bag and I had

2:24

my compound shipped out

2:27

there within a week really and

2:29

I man , I killed pigs , wild

2:31

goats out there with a con . I mean , that's what

2:33

I did . If I wasn't doing that , I

2:35

was spirited . So you're hunting the whole your

2:38

whole life , man oh hun's been a big part of it

2:40

.

2:40

This is my passion . Yeah

2:42

, it's in your DNA . Yeah , I love it .

2:44

Yeah , so you was in the Marines . How long were you in the Marines

2:46

? Five years active and I

2:48

did three in the Reserve . Got

2:52

off active in 2004 . Thank

2:54

you for your service .

2:55

It was my pleasure and you're a bull

2:57

rider . Otis told me you was a bull rider . Yeah

3:00

, what a resume

3:02

.

3:02

You know , back then you was trying to prove

3:04

to everybody you was tough , that's

3:07

how you did it , huh . That's what you

3:09

wanted to be the toughest , the baddest boy on the

3:11

block , you know young and dumb the whole

3:13

time .

3:13

you're just killing stuff . Guys

3:16

, if you made it this far like

3:18

subscribe and hit the bell for notifications , it

3:25

helps us out tremendously and it helps us push to get more things in

3:27

the gear shop , more content up , and if you like something or he wants to do something , drop a comment

3:29

down below . All right , we'll get back into it , but

3:32

uh , so what ?

3:32

happened to your bull riding career . Well

3:35

, uh , I mean , uh

3:38

, I started out riding bulls as

3:40

a dare and that's where I met

3:42

otis . Y'all call him otis

3:44

, I call him buckshot . Oh really , yeah , they're

3:46

probably a story that was his call their ass

3:48

bit story behind that . Oh yeah , that was . That

3:50

was his rodeo call name

3:52

, that was his buckshot . Yeah

3:55

, he told me when he quit riding bulls that

3:58

that name kind of went went

4:00

to bed with it . You know he always

4:02

be buckshot to me it don't sound like you , you know .

4:04

Stop calling him buckshot to me . It don't sound like you , you know .

4:05

Stop calling him buckshot , I ain't I

4:07

hadn't talked to him in over 20 years till

4:09

he saw me on a podcast or

4:12

on a youtube video with a guy named

4:14

jason sam kowiak oh yeah

4:16

, I was deboning the hog

4:18

in a video and and ob

4:21

brian whatever y'all call him brian

4:24

, right , what y'all ? call yeah um

4:26

, he reached out to me otis , yeah , yeah

4:28

, otis . He's like is

4:31

this the james wood that rode this

4:33

and this and that bull and that bull ? And

4:35

I was like , yeah , it's

4:37

me . And then we had a little

4:39

reunion there and I mean we've been communicating

4:43

ever since , yeah , but

4:45

I got started bull riding

4:47

as a dare , dare , huh and

4:49

I am .

4:50

So you're one of those guys . Get dared and you just

4:52

do anything back , then I would yeah , well

4:54

, you remember you still do that , no no

4:56

, I'm a little bit smarter now really yeah I

4:59

measured the risk reward

5:01

slightly back

5:03

then it was worth it .

5:04

Yeah , back then it was worth it . Yeah , back then it was worth it . So let's

5:07

get into what you're doing currently , right , making

5:11

your bows , your arrows . Walk

5:13

me through that . What got you into that ? Because I know you said

5:15

why don't ?

5:16

you make your arrows .

5:17

Whenever you was a middle schooler you could first deer

5:19

. You compound bow hunting . When did you get into the traditional

5:21

bow hunting ?

5:32

Four years ago I got in the trad and , uh , my first , my first year I was working in

5:34

florida so I didn't get to hunt much at all . I got three deer that year and that was with

5:36

a , a bear , super grizzly , 45 pound recurve

5:39

with carbon arrows

5:41

. And in the

5:43

next year I had a big Jim

5:45

mountain monarch , big Jim bow

5:47

companies in Albany , georgia , south of

5:49

where I live , and I could actually go down there

5:51

and meet him . That's cool and

5:53

he builds bows there .

5:56

So did you get into traditional hunting because it was

5:58

more challenging . Yeah

6:00

, because it was kind of like a little tougher , because you

6:02

know at that point you done killed tons of deer .

6:10

Yeah , the compound just kind of got to where I wasn't getting the . It was kind of automatic . I know how

6:12

that sounds , but don't take it the wrong way , but it was . It was

6:14

just the same , pretty , pretty automatic

6:17

, right . I mean , I hadn't shot

6:19

a deer over 25 yards

6:21

in four years with a compound . I

6:23

was getting close already , right . So

6:26

I just kind of wanted

6:28

something different . You know , and and

6:31

uh , I got hearing about

6:33

traditional archery on podcast stuff

6:35

and I I got into it , uh

6:39

. So I had

6:41

, uh , my first year with that big Jimbo

6:43

. I killed a dozen deer with it . And

6:46

then during the springtime

6:49

a buddy of mine gave me a piece of Osage

6:51

log and I

6:55

had two older fellas kind of mentor me

6:57

in building that bow and got

6:59

it built . And the first time I drew it back it cracked

7:02

. We put a deer

7:04

sinew raft on it , off the deer backstrap

7:06

and let it sit for four

7:08

days . Things ugly

7:10

, nasty , crooked . And

7:13

I hunted with it for a full season

7:15

and it was the most

7:17

gratifying hunting I've ever done . Oh , yeah

7:19

. I mean hunting with something you built

7:22

. You carved out of a log you

7:24

know , built the string for it Right

7:26

right , got a big crack on it with deer

7:29

sinew wrapping holding it together .

7:30

That's grinding , I mean . So you build this stuff

7:32

, for you know , and I asked you like , why

7:34

don't you build your arrows ? So not

7:37

only you build your bow , but you want to build your arrows

7:39

too ? Yeah , so you just do

7:41

that because it's different . Yeah , so you just do that because it's

7:43

different just the the

7:45

main reason I like wood arrows

7:47

are

7:53

they're ? They're quieter off the boat , okay , and so there's a reason why you do it too .

7:55

Yeah and uh , not just to be different , no , I mean the , the . When you're shooting a slow

7:57

bow , you need a quiet bow . You know , yeah

7:59

, you know , how deer are yeah

8:01

, right , right right right . Uh , I

8:04

found out the first year . I shot a few those

8:06

three deer with carbons during the summer

8:08

. I was like man , these woods are the way

8:10

to go . And uh , my first

8:13

few . My buddy , foster , came built

8:15

me and then I ended up building

8:17

my own . You know , schlater , I get to . I

8:20

ordered a wood shafts , right okay , all

8:22

, okay All right From from uh . They're

8:24

out from out uh in Oregon , I think

8:27

it's where uh . Sherwood shafts is . So

8:29

he sends me to bear shafts . Oh

8:31

, I got you , and then I I'll . All I

8:34

do is I fletch them , either with natural

8:36

Turkey fletchings , cut off the

8:38

wing , or ordered .

8:40

But I won't . That's wild . Yeah , that is

8:42

man . It's so cool like everybody wants to

8:44

do that . Yeah , everybody wants to do that . I

8:46

don't know if everybody wants to do that . I don't know if everybody knows

8:49

how to do that that's cool , though everybody on the bucket list

8:51

it's a bow hunter , like you know .

8:52

I want to kill on the recurve one day everybody wants

8:54

to , yeah , but how many guys do you know

8:56

that that does ? It

8:58

goes that extreme with it .

9:00

Yeah , I mean no hardly none .

9:02

That's a special individual , zero

9:04

, I mean you gotta be , you gotta

9:06

be a little bit off is that what

9:08

it is ?

9:09

I wasn't gonna say you had a loose screw or nothing

9:11

I'll put it to you this way

9:13

.

9:13

I mean this you know , 30

9:15

yards with a compound , it's dead right

9:17

right 30 yards with a traditional

9:20

bow . You need 15 more yards you're

9:22

very , you're very .

9:23

I bet you're a very patient person . You've got

9:25

to be . I mean , I could tell you are

9:27

, because I could just see myself carving

9:30

out a bow .

9:30

I just I wouldn't be very patient no

9:33

that no , no I would not be either

9:35

that first one I built I had 44 hours

9:39

in it man , four hours .

9:41

that explains why he kills me too . You're

9:43

just a patient person , mm-hmm , you know

9:45

.

9:45

When you with this traditional

9:48

stuff . I mean last week I got impatient

9:50

shot . One hit it in the scapula , couldn't

9:52

find it . I should have waited , and when

9:54

that deer run off I was like I

9:57

would have never took that shot in an urban

9:59

situation . Why did I take it here

10:01

in the big woods ?

10:02

Right .

10:05

You know it's a mistake I made you know , and why do you think you made that

10:07

mistake ? I was in , the

10:10

deer was in there and when

10:12

I literally just flinched a little

10:14

bit and the back was to me and he jumped

10:16

, I should have never shot at him because he's already

10:18

nervous . You know it's a doe , but uh

10:21

, anyway it run . I think deer still

10:23

lie . I never found a drop of blood , nothing

10:25

, you know , that's good .

10:28

Yeah , because I mean shooting traditional bow . I mean the

10:30

arrow's moving a little slow . Oh yeah , so if it

10:32

ain't right in the pocket , 170

10:34

foot's a smoking trad bow .

10:36

170 foot a second's a smoker

10:39

, you know yeah .

10:40

That's crazy .

10:41

Wow .

10:45

That , that's crazy , wow yeah and uh , that's what you're shooting the one your bow you made , yeah

10:47

, my bow .

10:48

My bows average about 170 how many . How many pounds is

10:50

it on the draw ? Most of the ones

10:52

I shoot , the bows I'm shooting

10:54

right now 50 50 is the

10:56

lightest . I like 50 to

10:58

57 pounds in there and

11:00

a 50 pound trad

11:02

bows kind of equivalent to like a 70-pound

11:05

compound . Right , you

11:08

know , with a trad bow

11:10

your standard is

11:13

measured at 28 inches , so most of

11:15

your bows will say 45 at 28

11:17

. But every inch more you

11:19

draw past 28 , you're adding about three

11:21

pounds . Basically , and

11:24

I got about a 29

11:26

and a half inch draw . So on your arrows

11:28

.

11:28

What do you use ? Uh , broadhead

11:30

wise for for

11:33

deer .

11:33

This year I started playing

11:35

with these simmons tree sharks which are about

11:37

a fixed blade , two inch

11:39

head couldn't like throwing a hatchet at them

11:42

, so it's like a real wide . How long is it ? Pretty long

11:44

, yeah , they're . They're real narrow

11:46

and wide at the back . So you

11:48

know they cut in there good , but for

11:50

hogs I like the little old a standard

11:52

. That's my go-to hog

11:56

head . They're 44 for six . You don't

11:58

cry when you lose them right .

11:59

Well , I gotta just say , I mean , you ever see yourself

12:01

just making a uh , a

12:04

arrowhead ? Oh , I mean , that's the next

12:06

step . I wouldn't . Wouldn't you think ? I mean , if you made

12:08

the bow , you made the arrow . Did

12:10

you kill the turkey to make the flitches ?

12:13

no , I did not . Uh , you skipped

12:15

a step . The turkey is the only

12:17

thing big game . I hadn't killed

12:19

in georgia with a self bow a

12:22

turkey I haven and that's hard

12:24

now . Oh yeah , and I'm not a turkey

12:26

hunter so , so .

12:27

So , b scott , you're talking about making

12:29

broadheads . I mean , are you , are you making the

12:31

uh , broadheads ?

12:32

tapping points . No , I , no , I

12:34

buy my broadheads , I'm , I shoot

12:37

the . Uh , you know

12:39

, steel heads glue on just hot

12:41

milk , glue them on the .

12:42

I got you whatever oh , you glue them on the arrow

12:44

. Yeah , that's crazy , that's

12:46

crazy how

12:48

much your arrow weight .

12:50

My average arrow weighs about 680

12:53

, yeah , 660

12:56

to 680 you ever get bored .

12:58

You ever get bored with it . I mean , what's your next

13:00

thing ? What's the next thing you're gonna ?

13:02

do you're ?

13:02

gonna spear hunt , yeah . If to spear hunt

13:04

, no , I don't , that can't .

13:05

It's illegal in georgia to spear

13:07

hunt ? Oh , yes , you do it here in arkansas . Yeah , I

13:10

could have speared several deer this year

13:12

, right over . My next

13:15

thing is to kill a really good

13:17

buck I've been . What's your biggest buck you've killed

13:19

with your bow ? With a bow , uh

13:21

, probably 120 , 120

13:24

, yeah , yeah , ever . I'm not

13:26

a trophy hunter . I mean every trophy I've ever

13:28

killed , just the first one that showed up , you

13:32

know my

13:35

trophies look like I do that you know

13:37

what I mean .

13:37

I don't say way , I don't feel big deer

13:39

either when you pick up that trad bow

13:41

anything inside that brown

13:43

is a trail .

13:44

Yeah , a bound is a trad bow . Yeah , I guarantee

13:46

it is . I guarantee it is .

13:47

I bet you're so pumped up to you .

13:49

This is the first year I quit shooting

13:51

button heads .

13:55

I mean literally . I hear

13:57

you Ava Stats , ava Stats , how old are ?

13:59

you again , I'm

14:01

talking with a trad bow , yeah yeah , yeah

14:03

, I hear you the last few years . Buttonhead

14:06

, come in . There I was sticking him

14:08

.

14:08

They don't count toward our bucks . Low-hanging fruit

14:10

, low-hanging fruit , them button bucks are a

14:12

lot less cautious Grocery store

14:14

baby Talking about turning the ribs ain't that hard .

14:19

Yeah , you won't get busted near as bad with a young deer Good eating

14:21

. Yeah , I got to get them big bucks . They

14:23

got to be something wrong with them , yeah .

14:25

Now this year , oh yeah , this year

14:27

I let a 130 , maybe

14:30

mid-135 walk

14:32

Seven steps . Got it on video

14:34

, it's on my oh really . How come

14:36

you let it walk ? For I done shot two bucks

14:39

. Oh wow , yeah

14:41

, I done shot my two bucks , I shot a . That's why he let it

14:43

walk . He don't let it walk . He wasn't going to let it walk .

14:45

No , he wouldn't .

14:45

Hey , that thing , that's the hardest thing

14:48

I ever had to do in my life , oh really .

14:50

Yeah .

14:50

I mean , it was hard .

14:51

It was hard .

14:52

It was hard to watch that deer . Was you upset

14:55

, nah ?

15:08

I was like , hmm , picked my cell phone up , I had to go pro roll and I picked

15:10

my cell phone up just videoing .

15:11

That way I didn't pick my bow up . Oh man , you know , oh man . So what's the craziest thing

15:13

you've killed with a bow ? Uh , with a track . I mean , I killed a bear

15:15

. I've killed three bear with traditional archery . Wow , uh , but the

15:17

gator , the gator I

15:20

killed this year killed a gator with

15:22

a bow . Yeah , yeah , that's the picture right there . Yep

15:24

, all

15:28

wood arrows . That was my bow fishing reel . That Campbell soup can

15:30

. Where'd you shoot it at ? In

15:32

the back of the head ? That's a soup can I

15:34

shot it like four times ? That's

15:36

a Campbell soup can .

15:38

Yeah , that's what the so you basically

15:40

like bow fish . You kind of turned your arrow into

15:42

a bowfish arrow .

15:43

Yeah .

15:43

Yeah , that's a wooden arrow right there . I

15:45

noticed you wear a Sika . Yeah yeah

15:48

, you got a really nice Sika . That's

15:50

crazy to me , though . You make all your hunting stuff

15:52

.

15:53

To me . He's wearing a Sika and

15:55

he's making his own bows and stuff . It's

15:57

like a mixture of everything . He's a

15:59

unique individual .

16:07

If you're a , you know people . I hear all kind of crap about you .

16:08

Wouldn't believe what kind of crap you hear sitka , this sitka , that

16:10

you know well , you know if

16:14

you're a bow hunter , those

16:16

shirts , those tops , they're

16:20

designed by bow hunters for bow

16:22

hunters . The arms are tight too

16:25

, you don't get all this , even with the insulation

16:27

you don't get all right . I

16:29

mean if I can get a piece of

16:31

clothing that'll keep me out there longer comfortable

16:34

that's right I'm gonna , I'm

16:36

gonna get it .

16:36

That's right , that's right you know , I

16:38

mean , I wasn't a big sicker guy either

16:41

until I started wearing it . I tried it

16:43

and once I tried it , my . This stuff is

16:45

designed for this .

16:46

Oh , that shirt right there , that that insect

16:48

, the shield shirt yeah oh , you

16:51

won't last very long without

16:53

that .

16:53

In swamp center in georgia I can only imagine

16:56

those mosquitoes got you know

16:58

cleats on .

16:58

Yeah , serious the first time

17:01

I took that thing to the swamp . I got

17:03

back and I ordered three more of them . Oh

17:05

yeah .

17:06

Yeah , you got the gloves too , yeah , and the gloves

17:08

, do you wear the face shield ?

17:09

and everything . When I start

17:11

on the actual stalk on a hog , I pull

17:13

that face shield .

17:13

Yeah , you talking about the .

17:14

Equinox , yeah , the Equinox pants

17:17

.

17:17

Yep , that's good stuff . We

17:25

got the pants , and we got the hoodies and the gloves and all that stuff for turkey hunting

17:27

it does good .

17:28

Yeah , I don't know how that stuff works . How's it work ? It's just the material

17:30

, the way that material is built . They just

17:32

can't stick that . What's

17:35

that thing called ? They stick that , uh that

17:37

old sticker the needle sucker

17:39

, let's get his nose . They can't stick their sucker

17:41

through that pen through there and get .

17:43

Yeah , yeah , the clothing line is amazing

17:45

, uh , the equinox is amazing

17:47

, but so he shot that thing right behind

17:50

that right , a little soft spot .

17:51

What they say ?

17:52

on top of the head and I shot that thing like

17:54

four times the guy like yeah

17:56

, you would tell us that time .

17:57

Yeah , tell us that part yeah .

17:59

So that actually that hunt

18:01

was first time I ever got on a havoc boat

18:03

, really , yeah . So my

18:05

buddy lives in there on tybee island

18:07

and he's got a . We were

18:09

gonna go up this area that we we

18:11

hog hunt a lot , but hurricane helene

18:14

come in there and you couldn't get

18:16

in there . I mean it was devastating

18:18

on that part and there are trees everywhere

18:20

. So we

18:23

end up going with a fellow named logan , a good

18:25

friend of my buddy trey's , and uh , he

18:27

just had bought a havoc . It's

18:29

like the second time it'd been in the water and he

18:31

had a 1553 . Oh

18:33

yeah , vjst . Oh yeah , that's it

18:35

. And four grown men

18:38

got in that thing and we go gator hunting

18:40

and I'm like this thing's

18:42

sick , wow

18:44

, I haven't got a loaded down too

18:46

. Oh yeah , I mean , I mean I was smallest

18:48

one on the boat . You know I'm talking

18:50

about some big boys on , that's right . And

18:53

uh , so we hunted in

18:55

that thing that night , got flooded

18:57

on , I mean had to pull up . We were

18:59

standing under a little canoe where they had

19:01

some canoes on a public ramp . We

19:03

were like huddled up under canoes and in

19:06

the flood , but uh , I

19:09

, I was so impressed I

19:11

come back home and started looking for used

19:13

ones . And that's when I I

19:16

told otis , I said man

19:18

, I said I'm trying to find me one of

19:20

them , used havoc boats . I said I hunted out

19:22

of one of those things and I was so impressed

19:24

and he's like yeah , he

19:26

said I know the guys that build them things . I was like

19:28

really , yeah , small world , huh , yeah , I

19:31

mean that's wild . Otis is like the matchmaker

19:33

.

19:33

Yeah , he is , I will say that , otis

19:36

, he knows buckshot , he

19:38

knows everybody , he knows everybody , he remembers

19:40

everything . He knows everybody , he remembers .

19:42

I can't even keep up with it . I mean , we got

19:44

this little group chat thing . Oh my , oh man . Who's

19:46

this ? Oh man , oh man , oh man . He's just like

19:48

holy cow , oh he knows

19:50

everybody .

19:51

He's a busy man . He might be a politician

19:53

when he gives up his career . You think so . He

19:56

might run for office as many people as you know

19:58

.

19:58

He knows everybody ain't nobody , you don't know

20:00

so tell me all right . So right

20:04

now , you know it's duck season here in arkansas , deer

20:06

season still season . So what

20:08

, what are you doing right now ? What are you

20:10

, what are you going after ? What's your plans

20:13

like ? What do you have ?

20:14

we have cooking up well , right now I need I

20:16

need two more does to be completely

20:19

tagged out . Georgia we get 10 does

20:21

and 10 does .

20:22

Yeah , yeah , you get 10 does . And what

20:24

two bucks 12

20:27

deer yeah , 12 deer in georgia

20:29

it keeps you busy . That's why you live in georgia . Oh

20:32

yeah , hey , you'd done move

20:34

if it was like two deer wouldn't

20:36

you ? I'd at least go buy a georgia license

20:39

I hear you , god , it's a lot of deer . Y'all got a

20:41

lot of deer down there , I know . Well , it's pretty

20:43

crazy .

20:43

Certain areas I mean the area I live

20:46

is I got more public

20:48

land in the county I live than

20:50

private .

20:51

I used to live in . Is it all swamp ? No , is

20:53

it .

20:54

I live just above where the

20:56

swamps start . I had to drive at least an

20:58

hour and a half to get to the closest and

21:05

you enjoy going out there and hunting on the swamp .

21:06

That's my favorite hunting by far . Do you do it all by boat or you just walk around out

21:08

there ?

21:08

how do you do it ? 99 by boat . Yeah

21:11

, you're going after pig , huh . Yeah , yeah

21:13

, I'd go out there and

21:16

I'll , you know , launch the boat

21:18

, get out there and I'll hit it on the bank and get out , make

21:20

me a big loop . If I don't see no fresh

21:23

sign , I get back in the boat and move up

21:25

and make another loop , right . So you're looking for a

21:27

sign at that point . I'm looking for mainly

21:29

tracks and fresh rooting . When

21:32

I see what I like , then

21:34

I just , you know , the next

21:36

loop might be five miles , six miles

21:39

, you know , but I just start

21:41

with the little loops .

21:42

So you're just walking around . How do you hunt them

21:44

out there ? What is your strategy

21:47

?

21:48

Try to keep the wind in your face and just walk

21:50

Are you stalking . Yeah , I'll spot and stalk

21:52

on the ground .

21:54

Oh , okay , I see . Yeah , I'm

21:56

not going to sit for no hog he's spotting

21:59

stalking hogs in the swamp .

22:00

Yeah , yep , what

22:02

is this ? You

22:07

got swamp . Yeah , yep , what is this .

22:08

you got a video yeah , this is a crazy hunt right here

22:10

. Oh , I see a little piggy piggy , piggy , piggy holy

22:15

cow oh

22:21

, watch

22:24

that stump , oh

22:29

watch that stump .

22:30

One right there looking

22:35

at you .

22:38

Oh my God , what's

22:42

going on here ?

22:47

What .

22:50

Just a bit outside .

22:57

You're going to have to make

23:00

some more arrows .

23:00

Ooh Ooh . What

23:03

in the world is going on ? You

23:09

pull that one back , get

23:16

it , get it . That's what I was thinking

23:19

. So

23:21

how many pigs you get on that ? What in the world .

23:23

Let's start from the beginning . You're

23:27

not just walking around .

23:31

So you're just walking through the woods and you've seen the

23:33

pigs .

23:34

so I was trying to get to the

23:36

very back of that swamp , that that particular

23:39

property , uh , that

23:42

that's a piece of public ground in georgia

23:44

and , uh , I

23:46

, I was wanting to go back there . We were in crazy

23:50

flood conditions . I was wanting to get back there

23:52

and see if I could find a

23:54

few high spots , yeah . And

23:57

about halfway back to where I was wanting

23:59

to go , I was like the heck with this , I'm not gonna

24:01

make it , you know , yeah , and I was actually

24:03

walking back to the boat and

24:06

I heard a pig squeal , yeah

24:08

, and I was like what in the world

24:10

, where was that ? I knew it was close , so

24:13

I just pulled out my binoculars . I'm standing

24:15

there just glassing

24:17

and I saw that log from about 80

24:19

yards and

24:21

I seen that red

24:24

one laying on it .

24:25

so , so they were all just so

24:27

, so that whole area right there , like I had water everywhere

24:29

.

24:30

Oh , they were just laid up on that water come

24:32

up so fast that that was

24:34

the only thing they had to get on .

24:36

You know , right there really yeah

24:38

, so so you snuck up to the , did you

24:40

like ? I mean as hard as

24:42

sneaking water when you're walking through water would it

24:45

took about an hour , but

24:47

they weren't going nowhere .

24:48

Yeah , they were staying on the log . So as

24:50

soon as I see them , first thing I did check

24:52

the wind and I'm like I can't go

24:54

this way . I got to loop all the way back

24:56

, so I looped up , holy crap . The

24:58

whole time you're trying . I got on on hip waders

25:00

trying to keep them from filling up . So you tippy

25:03

toe and using I'm using my bow as

25:05

a and

25:13

uh . I kept that stump in between us but at the last minute I had to kind of

25:16

get out from behind it and on the way there I heard some

25:18

other pigs squeal , so I knew

25:20

there was more than one , but I didn't . I had no idea

25:22

they were all in that stump until I shot that

25:24

first one .

25:25

So they were all okay , were they , because

25:28

at first in the video we just seen that one on

25:30

the stump , the red one , that's all I saw . Were they all

25:32

inside of that ? They were

25:34

.

25:35

The rest of those were huddled up on each

25:37

other in that big root

25:39

ball .

25:40

Holy crap man .

25:47

You know what's crazy is , I cut the camera on and off so much on that stalk because

25:49

I didn't want the battery to die . So after that happened , when I got back

25:51

to the truck , I

25:53

couldn't find the video in

25:55

my . I hook it to my phone . You know

25:57

how you go back and look at you . I said , uh , nobody's

26:01

gonna believe this nobody no

26:03

, I got home and found it and I said

26:05

thank you , lord , you know .

26:08

Imagine if you didn't hit hit replay .

26:10

Oh , I've got crossed up on that

26:12

several times you get the wrong

26:14

.

26:14

Yeah , you're getting on the wrong wave there , you missed the

26:16

whole , thing , yeah . And only all the cool

26:18

stuff happens when you mess up .

26:20

Yeah , the biggest buck I shot

26:22

this year . I

26:26

got it . I hadn't seen a deer , you know I really wasn't expecting to see nothing , but I went

26:28

and , uh , I

26:32

went in there with a battery 44%

26:34

and I got extra

26:36

batteries . I didn't

26:38

change it . I got in a lockdown

26:41

with a doe and shot the biggest buck I shot

26:43

this year at seven steps , walking right

26:45

, you know and missed the shot .

26:49

So when you're hunting deer , are you on the ground or are

26:51

you up ?

26:51

in a stand . Yeah , I hunt

26:53

them from a stand Right

26:56

, is it ?

26:56

like a lock-on . Is it easier to do out of a lock on

26:58

? I imagine , probably be kind of hard .

27:00

Well , anything else I hunted out

27:02

of a saddle for years , till this year

27:04

, but this year it started hurting my

27:06

my right . I broke my right foot

27:08

and ankle and I got a hip

27:11

injury well , this goes back to

27:13

the bull riding .

27:14

This word bull riding , well riding comes in .

27:15

Well , actually no , I

27:18

broke my hip and ankle pushing some cows

27:20

up on a side-by-side . They cut out a

27:22

herd and I cut with them and the thing flipped

27:25

over and broke my foot and ankle

27:27

Horrible

27:29

and my hip . My wife's cousin

27:32

come over from California to deer hunt

27:34

so I was trying to find

27:36

him somewhere to rifle hunt . Climbed

27:39

up in this old shooting house there was a tree growed

27:41

up over the roof . I went to push it up

27:44

just where I could open the door and the step broke

27:46

. That's how I hurt my hip oh

27:49

, good lord yeah , so

27:51

yeah , that's my bull riding . Injuries

27:53

is hand , ribs , knees

27:56

, you know . No , I broke this old big

27:58

nose four or five times .

28:02

You proved , you was the toughest though .

28:03

What'd you do ? I mean , besides

28:05

your military career and your bull riding , anything

28:08

else you did ?

28:10

All I ever did before I joined the Marine Corps

28:12

was farm .

28:13

Right , you're a farmer .

28:15

Hay and cows . Yeah , I worked for a guy and

28:18

I mean the reason I farmed , the

28:21

reason I wanted to do that , is for the hunting

28:23

, you know , to get more

28:25

places to hunt .

28:27

He's ate up with it , he loves it , he

28:29

loves it , I'll guarantee you . So your favorite thing

28:31

, deer hunting . Is it deer hunting ?

28:41

Hog , guarantee you so your favorite thing , deer hunting .

28:43

Is it deer hunting ? Hog , favorite hogs hunting , I like the . I like the bear hunting in north georgia

28:45

too . This first year I had no , I didn't get a bear .

28:46

I missed one , you still got two does kill .

28:46

Yeah , you better get back at it .

28:47

I'm telling you I'm running out of time I got it but

28:49

in so in alabama you

28:51

kill one deer a day , right ?

28:53

I think so , yeah , so where

28:55

do you live in Georgia , right

28:57

above Macon ?

28:59

See , I lived in Fort Benning Georgia .

29:00

Oh yeah , Columbus .

29:02

I hunt down there at Fort Stewart a lot In

29:04

Phoenix City . See , we used to go to

29:06

Alabama side to kill a deer a day .

29:08

Yeah , back when I was younger . There's

29:10

a lot of hogs at Benning . Yeah , there's a lot of hogs at Benning

29:13

. Yeah , fort Benning had a lot of hogs , and Fort

29:15

Stewart's a good place too . Was this one

29:17

of the bugs you killed this year ? That's

29:20

the one .

29:21

I let walk . Yeah , oh man , sad he had a little bit of mass on him

29:23

. Yeah , he did . He's a good bug .

29:24

Yeah , he's going to be a really good one

29:26

. His

29:28

left main beam broke off

29:30

now , so he would make it .

29:31

He's got good ones too yeah

29:35

, you shot

29:37

a button buck instead of that one didn't you ? That's

29:40

what happened . You shot the first thing to show up

29:42

. I didn't , I didn't shoot any dang

29:44

, I let this one walk now

29:46

, is that what happened ?

29:48

no , I hadn't shot

29:50

any button bucks this year

29:52

, okay he's just taunting you .

29:55

I'm trying to set you up . How often does that happen until

29:57

you just have a big shooter buck just sitting

29:59

under there eating .

30:02

It won't happen again , because I'll

30:04

have a tag to the

30:06

last he done learned his lesson .

30:07

He's going to let that spike walk . That's

30:10

a nice buck .

30:11

It is a nice buck . He got a lot of mash . He can . That's a nice buck . It is a

30:13

nice buck , he got a lot of mass . You can tell he's an older buck . See what I do ? I do it

30:15

opposite , and I always cut

30:17

myself short too . So

30:21

what I do is I'm like well , I can't shoot another buck because I got to have one buck tag in case

30:23

the big buck comes out . Well , what happens is I

30:25

eat the tag every year .

30:27

Well , I'll eat the tag before I

30:29

let that happen again .

30:31

I'm telling you , man , I do that all the time

30:34

. I'm like , all right , I got one tag left . It has

30:36

to be , you know , a good buck , a

30:38

really good buck , and I'll sit there , and I'll sit there and

30:40

I'll pass you know decent bucks , and

30:42

then I eat the tag .

30:44

Well , tim asked me what was my next thing

30:46

to do . My next thing to do is kill a big one with

30:49

that sting , are you ?

30:50

going to do it in Georgia .

30:52

Yeah , all I hunt

30:54

. I mean I

30:57

love the state that I live in , you know . I mean

30:59

we've got some really big deer . I

31:08

mean you look at Georgia . We've got more boon and crockets in Georgia than all our neighboring states

31:10

combined . I mean there's some big

31:12

, big deer in Georgia , in North Georgia All over , really . I mean like anywhere

31:14

else . Big deer in Georgia , In North Georgia All over , really

31:16

. I mean like anywhere

31:18

else . Some counties are better than others , but

31:20

like Fulton and DeKalb around

31:23

Atlanta , you take the rifle out of the equation

31:25

completely . You

31:28

can grow some big deer up there and

31:31

you wouldn't believe the places they live . Yeah

31:34

, I mean you see Lee Ellis and

31:36

what he kills up there year after year

31:38

after year they are , they're there , so you

31:40

hunt deer all over and play .

31:41

You know neighborhoods and yeah

31:43

, I don't just need traditional archery

31:46

in the urban .

31:47

Yes , you do . You do it there as well . Yes , the only

31:50

thing I'd do so what do

31:52

?

31:52

uh ? I mean , how hard is it to kill a deer in the neighborhood

31:54

?

31:55

Compared to the big woods , Like if you had to compare

31:57

them hand in hand , you

32:00

know what's different about them .

32:01

Well , everybody thinks city deer is

32:03

stupid . You know , you

32:06

can . You can walk around in the

32:08

backyard where they're used to seeing people

32:10

.

32:10

Well , nevermind , I'll leave that one out .

32:12

But when you , when , when you get , when you step

32:14

out there and get in a tree yeah it's

32:17

a whole , another it's .

32:19

It's different , so you're not supposed to be there

32:21

. Yeah , so you'd be killing deer , like in

32:23

people's front yards and stuff , or backyards

32:26

, and I've got a couple places

32:28

.

32:28

It's super tight . I

32:30

take a couple buddies over there , uh

32:33

, put them out and they're like no

32:36

, ain't , no way , you've lost

32:38

your mind , you know so you'd be .

32:40

So you go out here and you bait , you bait , you

32:42

throw bait out here . I , I corn

32:44

and nut grub or something .

32:46

Yeah , I do I really . Last

32:48

year I didn't at all . This

32:51

year I'm trying to get

32:53

them up there as close as I can where I

32:55

can be really selective about my shot

32:58

angle . Yeah , and that that's the main

33:00

reason that I don't get me

33:02

wrong . I ain't about that

33:05

ain't the only reason that they draw them , but it puts

33:07

the odds in my favor to get a

33:09

good shot right with that bow

33:12

right , because you can't just take , you

33:14

know , questionable shots .

33:16

No , you don't have the speed you don't have

33:18

.

33:18

Well , up there , you , you got to hammer

33:21

them , you know I mean that

33:23

right there , that video

33:25

right there is as good as you could possibly

33:28

ask for oh

33:36

yeah , okay look at that backyard . Yeah

33:38

, my truck's like 20 yards from where

33:40

that deer piled up right there .

33:42

I didn't even notice the house at first . Dude , you are

33:44

in the backyard .

33:45

Yeah , there's another one right behind what

33:49

was that one go

33:52

ahead and play that random one that particular

33:55

spot is unreal . I don't

33:57

think I've ever sat there , not seen deer bait

33:59

or no bait right november 15th

34:02

, back

34:04

in my the same spot I was

34:07

at this morning where

34:10

I had all the bucks chasing the does

34:12

and so do you see big

34:14

bucks in the urban spots ?

34:16

Like are they ? Do you see ? Like , when there is

34:18

an older buck there , are they bigger than you

34:20

see them in the big woods ?

34:22

I've seen more four-year-olds since

34:25

20 , in 2019 , since

34:27

I started hunting urban than

34:29

I've seen my whole life enjoying

34:31

the hunt . Yeah , really yeah .

34:33

That's what I've heard .

34:35

I've heard it's like that it's just because there's no

34:37

pressure on them well , you , you

34:39

know , the main thing up there is you don't

34:41

have any gun , so the only way they're going to

34:43

get killed by a hunter or by a car

34:45

, right , you know so .

34:46

I'm sure the insurance company loves you guys .

34:49

The what you know urban

34:51

hunting . It's like you . It's

34:54

like you're poaching , because

34:56

you don't want nobody else to know you're . You know

34:58

you don't want the neighbors , you don't want to . You

35:00

got to be under the radar . I mean , I

35:03

can see that you've got to make the

35:05

shot because you can't have a deer running through

35:07

there . Oh , yeah that's another good thing about

35:09

wood arrows , by the way . You're not gonna have a deer

35:11

laying in somebody's yard with arrow poking

35:14

out .

35:14

Arrows gonna break as soon as it hits

35:16

something really , if that was to

35:18

happen . Right , yeah , right , man

35:21

there's a whole another seven . Has that

35:23

ever happened to you , though ? You shoot a deer and it run out

35:25

to the , to the ? No

35:27

, I like if I knocked on the wood , but

35:30

it could .

35:30

My next shot could very well happen . You

35:32

know they move , especially

35:35

when these leaves get off the trees .

35:36

Man those deer radar , they

35:39

get nuts , do you feel like you're breaking the law

35:41

, like when you're out there in the urban you got house everywhere

35:43

. I mean you feel kind of like you're like under , like I

35:46

know you gotta feel like okay , like

35:48

on uneasy , almost what really freaks

35:50

you out is when , like the neighbor right

35:53

behind you , comes walking towards you .

35:55

Yeah , and you'd like squirrel up

35:57

to that tree Like you're hiding . You

36:00

know , and uh you , oh

36:03

God , is she coming out here to ? I mean

36:05

, you got permission . Yes , you , do you do , but

36:08

the neighbors might not know

36:10

it . They you never know what you're dealing with with the

36:12

other neighbors and most of these people don't

36:14

know their neighbors nowadays .

36:16

I got you Well hell , they

36:18

don't even talk to each other ?

36:19

Have you ever had someone come up on you and get into it ?

36:21

That's what we got Facebook for .

36:22

Not yet . The only thing I've had

36:24

happen was I shot

36:27

a buck two years ago , no

36:29

more than that . This was probably the last

36:31

buck I shot with a compound . That was probably

36:34

five years ago and I

36:36

had a red light on

36:38

and I was gutting the deer . I had a four-acre

36:40

block of woods behind these houses and

36:44

as I'm dragging it to the truck

36:46

, I come out and I hit a power line and

36:50

I go to the street , walk down the power line , hit the street and the power

36:52

line's grass it's nice sod

36:55

and all that stuff and uh , I'm

36:58

jet sledding this deer to my truck

37:01

, you know , and there's a lady sitting there

37:03

taking pictures of my tag and everybody

37:05

in this neighborhood , this particular neighborhood , knows

37:07

I'm deer hunting , everybody knows but

37:10

her , and

37:12

she's done , called the police and

37:16

uh , she , she , she

37:18

went a little nuts on me . I had to . I

37:21

played it cool . You know , the cops come

37:23

four , four , four

37:26

, dekab county police come in there , oh

37:28

yeah , and they start

37:30

talking her to them like y'all , they want

37:32

to talk about the deer , you know . Oh , they're like

37:34

this is sweet you can do this . You

37:36

know she's raising cane , having a hissy

37:39

fit . I was shining

37:41

a red laser through her living

37:43

room window . She's got kids and single

37:46

mom and I

37:48

told her . I said lady , I said I'm

37:51

the one you want behind your house , you

37:53

know . Know , that's right , I'm not

37:55

that guy . If I

37:57

see some guy back here , I'm going to handle

38:00

it , you know .

38:01

Mm-hmm , so you're

38:03

doing YouTube video , you're making YouTube video . Where

38:06

can people find ?

38:07

you . Oh , at gunghobos

38:09

, a little A At gunghobos

38:11

. That's my YouTube channel .

38:13

You're sweet , you seem gungho , you

38:16

, gung-ho bows .

38:17

that's my no bow to check .

38:19

Just wait , you seem gung-ho . I've seen like a very humble person . Yeah , I use down the

38:21

earth .

38:21

Yeah , humble , I like you .

38:22

How long you been married since

38:25

I won 2001

38:27

. 2001 how I met my wife . How's

38:29

that giving her uncle hogs

38:31

in Hawaii .

38:34

You got your Hawaiian woman .

38:36

Yeah , my wife's actually

38:38

Filipina .

38:39

Really yeah . I mean , does she hunt

38:41

with you ?

38:42

No , she don't hunt . She did a few times in

38:44

Hawaii . Really Can't

38:46

convince her . Well , we

38:49

had a big fight in the woods one

38:52

day . She's making too much noise . I

38:54

kept saying , shh , are you up , bear , alone

38:56

? So she grabbed a tree and shook it . Let

38:58

me tell you something I'll tell you what I did ? Is

39:01

that all she did ? She shook that tree

39:03

and boy , I got hot

39:05

.

39:05

Oh yeah , you missed a hunter . Yeah , well , that could

39:08

have been biggest . Whatever you know , you never

39:10

know what's going to run into you .

39:11

I uh , I saddle hunting with my wife for the

39:13

first time this year and she's never

39:15

saddle hunted and I could tell she was a little nervous . You know

39:17

, and I you know I've been saddle hunting

39:20

it don't bother me to swing around on the ropes and stuff

39:22

but I told her I said , just get

39:24

back in your practice , draw back your bow and everything

39:26

and just practice . Well , she was leaning

39:28

back and she she drew back and

39:31

she was barely getting off the platform . So I

39:33

just put , put my hand on her . That just

39:35

kind of pushed her back a little bit . Boy , she

39:37

was like a wet cat . I mean

39:39

, shit went everywhere . Damn Bo

39:41

went forward , she went to yelling and

39:43

it was like it was a broken arrow

39:46

, like dude , calm

39:48

down , you're still tied to the tree

39:50

. Just helping you . You're still tied to the tree

39:52

. Quit yelling at me . We're supposed to be deer hunting

39:54

, but yeah , it's hard to get a woman up in that

39:56

situation .

39:58

I don't understand it , do they ? My

40:03

wife ?

40:03

she went twice with

40:07

me , but

40:10

she makes some good dishes out of all this stuff . I keep , well , yeah , I mean , yeah , women cook good , don't

40:12

they ? But they ain't built for this kind of stuff

40:14

. Some are , though . Mine's not no I hear you

40:17

, I hear you .

40:18

Running through the swamp shooting hogs spot

40:20

stalking .

40:21

You got a crazy story Wood arrows . You're like

40:23

an old country boy that's humble , that has

40:25

all these wild stories and building

40:28

your own arrows for some reason .

40:30

But you got cool camo you know

40:32

, yeah , I mean really think about it , like

40:35

some of the stuff you've done , I mean that

40:37

we've seen you do like if somebody

40:39

was telling somebody else about it , they'd

40:41

be like , oh , there ain't no way , there ain't no way

40:43

he made all that up .

40:45

You know what I mean . It took a good bit

40:47

of convincing from a few guys

40:49

that I'm really close with to

40:52

uh pick

40:54

up this camera , you know , because that

40:58

ain't really me , you know . Right , right , uh

41:00

, it's I can see that camera makes it

41:02

a lot harder , even though it's a gopro on your

41:04

head . What'd you get ? You get nervous with

41:06

the camera , or are you just ? I don't

41:08

know . I just I'm getting better at it yeah

41:11

you go back and look at some of the first videos

41:13

I made and it's just like how many followers

41:15

.

41:15

You got how many followers they got ? You

41:17

got quite a few followers on YouTube

41:19

.

41:21

That's like 16 , 15 , 1600 .

41:24

Yeah , 16 , 1600 is what it is , yeah

41:26

.

41:27

I've seen it on the last video . I was just wondering .

41:29

you know , no , you definitely Having

41:31

a carry-around camera gear batteries making

41:33

it charge dumping the SD card . It does

41:35

add a step to the game , yeah

41:37

.

41:43

It's , you know , and you're trying . There's

41:45

plenty of times you know . I could just add you know , I mean

41:48

with these whitetails , right now , this

41:50

time of year , if you don't see them coming and

41:53

reach up there and hit that button

41:55

on that gopro , you lie , would not you

41:58

? Lie to get pinned down , not be able to do it , you

42:00

know there's a lot of your followers on yours

42:02

.

42:03

I mean they do the same thing .

42:04

You do most of my most of my

42:06

followers are uh , you know

42:08

how you can go to that analytics ? Most of my followers

42:10

are 50 years old . Really very

42:13

young .

42:14

There's a lot of the older guys

42:16

to hunt . Like you hunt , you think it's the

42:18

older guy versus the compound

42:20

younger guy stuff well , most

42:24

of the older guys are

42:26

, are .

42:27

they're a lot more older trad guys

42:29

than young . You know most , most

42:31

young guys want to . You

42:33

know , if they bow hunting , they want to compound hunt because

42:35

you know it's easier

42:38

. Nothing I mean

42:40

, I'm the same way . I mean , oh yeah , when

42:42

you pick up that thing it's

42:47

just a whole other game because you got

42:49

to get close . You know , really close

42:51

15 yards , 20 yards on a whitetail

42:54

yeah

43:00

, that's pretty good . From 20 yards , close 15 yards , 20 yards on a white tail yeah , from

43:02

20 yards to 15 yards , say . At 20 yards

43:04

I'd say it could be 50 , 50 depending on

43:06

the how the deer's acting before you shoot

43:08

, yeah , and at 15 yards

43:10

you don't

43:13

do much missing .

43:13

At 15 , yeah , but at 20

43:15

, a lot that different , that five yards

43:18

, a lot can go wrong so if somebody was getting

43:20

into this kind of hunting , how would you tell them

43:22

to get into it ? What's the first step ? Because you

43:24

know , I know a lot of guys have tried

43:26

it and gave up on it . So what makes

43:29

a guy not give up on it ? Besides your

43:31

, your drive of just doing

43:33

it , because obviously you build arrows , you do

43:35

all that . So a lot of guys are

43:37

going to buy their equipment . But you're

43:39

special , you know . I mean

43:41

you stay with it . So

43:44

I mean . So if you had any kind of advice

43:46

to give to people to stay into this

43:48

hobby , what would you do ? Just

43:50

be patient .

43:52

I would tell them if you want to get into

43:54

traditional archery , find you someone

43:57

that has been doing it for a while

44:00

yeah , not someone who just started

44:02

, but someone who's been doing it for a while

44:04

and and snuggle

44:07

up to them and be a sponge . Yeah

44:09

, you know , you can go . You

44:12

can go watch all this stuff on youtube

44:14

on how to shoot a traditional bow

44:16

, and the way you shoot a traditional

44:19

bow is whatever works for you , not

44:21

what works for .

44:23

I see these shooting sideways horizontal Right right

44:25

.

44:25

Yeah , I was going to bring that up too .

44:27

So why do you ?

44:27

shoot a horizontal like that . It's just what works when

44:30

I draw back . That's just how

44:32

it all lines up , I mean .

44:35

So there's not a certain way that you would do

44:37

it , just what's best fits you .

44:39

Whatever works for you .

44:40

What you're comfortable with .

44:41

Do you have a reference Like do you aim

44:43

or do you instinctively

44:45

aim , you know , because

44:47

I know there's guys that do both .

44:49

Since I started this YouTube

44:51

stuff , I've noticed that a lot of my shots

44:53

are really I mean

44:56

, literally fast .

44:58

Yeah , Fast acting is fast quick .

45:00

So you know , when I first started I

45:02

was a hundred percent looking down my

45:04

arrow .

45:05

But now you're more used to shooting . I mean , you've had a lot

45:07

of experience doing it .

45:08

Yeah , Now you know , now

45:10

I , I , I think

45:12

I can do it either way . A lot of times after

45:14

I shoot , I don't really remember seeing

45:16

a point of my hair . You know , it's just . But the

45:19

way I'm built , when this is all stretched

45:22

out completely , this is like that

45:24

. And when I know that fat part

45:26

of my hand hits my cheek , I'm

45:29

at full drop . That's

45:31

the hardest thing for people to learn , because if

45:33

you're a half inch short , a half inch long , that's a hardest thing for people to learn , because

45:35

if you're a half inch short , a half inch long , that's a couple

45:37

pounds you know , that's

45:39

a , that's a

45:41

change the whole fight .

45:42

Yeah , yeah , I mean . So . I noticed , when

45:44

you just did that , the way you hit your hand are you ? How

45:46

are you holding the string ? Are you holding it with your fingers

45:48

?

45:48

three , three fingers three fingers

45:51

, three fingers with a little leather tab

45:53

oh so it's like a solid tab . Yeah

45:55

, just a piece of leather just to keep

45:58

that 50 , 55 pound strain

46:00

from eating your finger up and you .

46:02

I guess you shoot with the uh knock of the arrow on

46:04

top of it and knocks on top

46:06

.

46:06

I shoot three under the three under means

46:09

three under the knot , three under the knot

46:11

. So you're either gonna be a three under shooter

46:13

or a split finger , which means

46:15

your top finger is on top of

46:17

the knot .

46:17

You like that , probably eat your fingers up . Pretty bad

46:19

, huh .

46:21

I just don't like nothing touching

46:23

my knot . That's why I'm

46:26

three under with a little nail

46:28

knot on top and the bottom of the knot and

46:32

I don't have nothing in contact with the knot

46:34

, you know yeah

46:37

, because you hit it .

46:38

I mean , I imagine a release , since

46:40

you're doing with your fingers , can

46:42

alter it .

46:43

Oh yeah one finger drag a

46:45

little more than the other , you don't come off clean

46:47

. Uh , yes , that's probably the

46:50

hardest thing , really . Yeah , so

46:52

just being consistent is probably the number one thing . A

46:54

consistent draw and a

46:56

consistent release , I'd say , are the

46:58

are the two biggest fact

47:00

. Then you get , you know , you figure out if you're gonna try

47:03

to be an instinctive shooter , if you're gonna be a

47:05

point on guy , a gap guy , where you're

47:07

looking down your arrow and

47:09

saying , all right , the top

47:11

of my arrow needs to be on that

47:13

targets back at 30 yards

47:15

. That's kind of how my setup , if I'm shooting

47:18

a target 30 yards . I

47:21

can lay that arrow up there on

47:23

top of that back and that's going to drop

47:25

right in there but on a deer . That

47:27

ain't the deer ain't gonna be there 30

47:30

, I don't even I'm

47:32

not shooting that deer over . How many times have

47:34

you missed a deer ? I missed

47:36

one the other day . That's the first one I missed this

47:38

year , really yeah , I mean , I mean

47:40

.

47:40

I mean , I mean , how many times did you miss deer before

47:42

it became natural to you

47:44

?

47:46

I missed the first hunt ever

47:48

. I went on with a stick by shot over

47:50

the same yearling three times shot

47:54

over its back , a yearling , yeah

47:56

, yeah , that's why I got three shots

48:00

and I had perfect when they come in . I

48:02

had two arrows left , hadn't killed a deer

48:04

with a stick bow yet , and I shot first

48:06

time . I shot over it

48:08

and I was like , well , maybe

48:11

I was a little amped up , let me try this again

48:13

. Drawbacks

48:16

right in the same spot and then it comes

48:18

back in there . I was hunting over a feeder , comes

48:22

back in there Like man , something wasn't right , let me try

48:25

. And this time I really focused , made

48:27

sure , yeah , right out the fletching

48:29

, hit the deer's back . And how old were

48:31

you then ? This

48:34

is four years ago , oh wow , yeah , this is my first year trad

48:36

. This is my first your

48:38

first go at it . I had two arrows left

48:41

. I said three strikes , I'm out

48:43

, you live , you know yeah and then

48:45

the next deer . I , my first

48:47

trad deer , was a monster

48:50

six point buck , I mean 20

48:52

inch inside spread really shot

48:54

him at seven steps . I was in a saddle

48:56

and I was set up

48:58

for my . I saw him working

49:00

a swamp edge and I hit him with

49:02

a just a loud . I

49:04

hit him with a normal grunt first . Then

49:07

I hit him , didn't do nothing

49:09

, I hit him with just a most obnoxious

49:11

noise you could blow on a grunt . He stopped

49:13

, made a scrape , peed

49:16

in it and he walked . He got

49:18

about 20 yards from me and

49:20

he postured up ears

49:23

back . I could see the hair raised on his

49:26

back and I was set up for my

49:28

shot right here to the left of the tree . At the last

49:30

minute he turned and come

49:32

this side . I was so twisted up

49:34

in those ropes it was absolutely because

49:38

I literally come over to you know

49:40

yeah the bridge just

49:42

a absolute cluster .

49:44

You had to put your hand in between the bridge . Yeah

49:46

, I've had to do that too .

49:48

Shot him at seven steps . He run all

49:51

and I knew

49:53

I hit him back , but I knew he was quartering

49:55

away , so I was in good

49:57

shape . I thought , and about that time

49:59

a doe come out and I just power

50:01

drove her at 12 yards .

50:04

She's just laying them down , they ain't knowing them .

50:06

So I'm walking back to the truck to get the

50:08

sled for the doe and there the buck lays

50:10

, running right toward the truck . Lucky

50:13

you I bet you were pumped up , though hey

50:15

, this spot was a park in

50:17

a Waffle House parking lot , to hunt it Literally

50:22

.

50:25

You have a good time , don't ?

50:26

you .

50:26

Dude , that urban land man . That's crazy . I

50:28

talk to people that go out there and do it and

50:30

they're like man , you're all in there .

50:32

I just feel nervous walking out there yeah .

50:34

I , I mean , I almost feel like it's

50:36

. I don't know , I was the

50:38

same way I feel you feel kind of like

50:41

like dirty , almost I shouldn't

50:43

be here right now .

50:44

I mean it . It takes some getting used to

50:46

to stand there . I shot that deer

50:48

. The first time I ever urban hunted was with

50:50

a compound . My buddy walks me . He said

50:52

we pull up and there's a holiday

50:54

inn and a

50:56

waffle house and they share the same parking

50:59

lot and he's like all right now , be

51:02

quiet going in here , you know I'm

51:04

gonna take you in here this first time and

51:07

we walked down the slope on back of the park . There's a

51:09

big swamp in there and

51:11

, uh , we walked down

51:13

the slope . He , he steps on these trash

51:16

cans , you know , like aluminum cans or plastic

51:18

bottles , makes all kind of racket

51:21

and I'm like what are you trying

51:23

to sabotage me ? We

51:27

take about 10 more steps and

51:29

get in the stand . I ain't 15

51:32

yards from the parking lot . You can see

51:34

the stand from the parking lot I'm

51:36

like you have got to be kidding me . He said

51:38

well , just get here and wait about 9 30

51:41

they show up and we

51:43

left . We went back from atlanta that

51:45

morning with five deer on the back of his truck

51:48

that's crazy . He killed three

51:50

. I killed two man right there in

51:52

the parking yeah , he was about a mile

51:55

from me . He killed a really nice eight

51:57

that morning .

51:57

Those deer get used to that . Yeah , they

51:59

get used to all the people and they feel safe .

52:02

That's why you don't want to . You know you

52:04

don't want to . You can't get deep in

52:06

those urban yards . You want to get in on

52:08

the edge .

52:09

Really .

52:15

Yeah , where they're used to kind of seeing a little activity , because if you try to get in there

52:17

deep then they're not used to seeing that , yeah , they're you know , and it's different , and

52:19

then then they get all nuts you know it's like a car driving by

52:21

the deer don't move .

52:22

Yeah , you stop the car and deer moves and you

52:24

you can y'all think

52:27

I'm crazy when I tell you this , but I swear

52:29

you can walk out there in regular clothes

52:31

and but you put

52:33

on camo . I don't know what it is , man

52:36

, it's like you become a predator . It's

52:39

nuts . What do you mean ?

52:41

yeah explain what you're talking , explain , explain

52:43

what yeah , definitely break it down .

52:45

So because I mean am I

52:47

, am I wearing the wrong camo ?

52:48

I mean , I mean these deer used to like

52:51

those places where you see me , like literally in somebody's

52:53

backyard . Yeah , those deer used to like those places where you see me like literally

52:55

in somebody's backyard . Yeah , those deer used to seeing people

52:58

back right regular clothes right , yep

53:00

, all right . But it's like if you put

53:02

on camo and walk back there

53:04

, you're like a predator

53:06

, you're talking like you changing like yes yes

53:08

, so I'll . I'll

53:10

do this for a couple reasons . You know and know

53:12

, and some of that . You know this I

53:15

don't know how many people have talked about this or

53:17

not . I probably that might should have just

53:19

kept this to myself , but a lot of times

53:21

I will wear

53:24

a regular shirt to

53:26

my stand and if

53:29

the deer see me they're

53:31

like oh , he ain't supposed to be that . You know , that's

53:33

a little odd a little weird . But also

53:35

, if people see me they don't

53:37

think nothing about it , right , when I shimmy

53:39

up the tree , pull the camouflage shirt open

53:41

. You know well , it works

53:44

, too well , it works for deer , yeah , I mean .

53:46

But I mean , it's amazing what you can get

53:48

away with , because the people I mean you're

53:50

you're legally hunting these areas

53:52

, but the people don't know it and just bug

53:54

the crap out of you yeah , I mean , they don't think you

53:57

probably could try to call a wall ?

53:58

just you want to keep it low-key . Yeah

54:01

, the less people that know , the better off you

54:03

are .

54:03

Yeah , that's right and uh I can , I

54:05

, I can see that . Yeah

54:07

, you don't want somebody staring at you at the window .

54:09

Hey , oh you know my

54:11

buddy shot one last year and it went

54:13

over there and died in somebody's backyard with

54:15

the arrow poking right out of it . Now

54:17

you talk about causing a show . That's

54:20

bad . Yeah , lost the spot over it

54:22

. Really , that spot was great . There's no

54:25

more . Why did he lose a spot over him ? Because

54:28

they raised so much heck , yeah , but that

54:30

did go to the homeowner and you

54:32

know you get one ruffled up in the neighborhood

54:34

. Then next thing you know they

54:36

don't want to deal with all that drama so they

54:38

just cut you off the hunt you know , is

54:41

that happening a lot now , or you think it's that's

54:43

the first time I've

54:45

. I've lost a spot because

54:48

of that since , and I mean I hadn't

54:50

been doing it long . I started in 2018

54:53

, 2019 , right , right , right , but , but you

54:55

, those urban spots , come and go

54:58

. That's why it's kind of hard to let you

55:00

know you , they sell them . Why

55:02

do you hunt urban , though ? Because

55:04

I like seeing deer every time I go

55:06

.

55:06

Sit , okay , and it's target

55:09

rich environment so it's so , it's

55:11

a , because you see deer

55:13

. Yeah , you don't have public land

55:15

to hunt or you don't have , I do , I mean

55:17

. But you just like the challenge

55:19

of urban hunting I like it .

55:21

I like because I know I'm going to see

55:23

something 99% of the time .

55:26

Because you're going to shoot the first thing that walks in .

55:28

I might you might .

55:29

You dropped the hammer , huh .

55:33

Until this , might you , might you drop

55:36

the hammer huh , till this year .

55:36

Absolutely , you learned a lesson , didn't you ? This year I've been more selective . You're

55:39

learning a lesson , yeah , hey , next year you're going in with a different game

55:41

plan .

55:41

You're gonna yeah , you're gonna come back next time on the podcast

55:43

, hey guys . Hey , I just ate

55:46

a tag 150

55:48

lord willing .

55:49

I'm gonna show y'all that deer next year yeah

55:51

I hope you do that .

55:52

He's to be a monster .

55:53

I hope you kill him . He's going to blow up . He's at

55:55

that age when they really blow you know

55:57

, I think he's about A four year old right now

55:59

, four to five . He's got good mass on

56:02

him too , and that palmatian , yeah

56:04

yeah . He carries his mass out good and

56:06

he broke off . His main

56:08

beams broke right now . Yeah , so I

56:10

surely know about shooting where's that buck at ?

56:12

you got that buck pinned on the neighborhood , or

56:14

oh yeah , yeah . So usually

56:16

you find a good deer in urban .

56:19

They usually don't go nowhere well

56:21

they , they do roam a lot they do

56:23

yeah especially during the rut . I mean

56:25

they really you have somebody

56:27

down the road running cameras , two

56:29

, three miles , that big six point . I told

56:32

you I killed my first trad deer . Buddy

56:35

of mine had a picture of him like two

56:37

miles from there , like

56:40

six hours before . I shot him same

56:42

deer , and there wasn't no no doubt about it

56:44

was him , I mean , big old monster was

56:47

he running like a finger or something

56:49

. Yeah , they run . I call them spaghetti

56:51

noodles . It's kind

56:53

of like western hunting , except instead

56:55

of creek , you know , instead

56:58

of fence rows and hedge rows , it's these

57:00

you're hunting neighborhood alleys , green

57:02

spaces .

57:03

You know , yeah , uh , what

57:06

they call them creek uh , buffer zones

57:08

right , yeah , like if you got a creek

57:10

running in between two neighborhoods .

57:11

You know , that's where you're gonna be hunting strip of woods

57:13

yeah .

57:14

Yeah , I mean , obviously it's where deer's going to be

57:16

.

57:16

Deer's going to move from point A to point

57:18

B and there's a jagged

57:21

line of woods . He's going to have to go down the woods

57:24

.

57:24

You ever hunt out of a ?

57:24

playhouse or something .

57:26

No , I haven't , but my buddy has have

57:28

really yeah , he , he actually hunted

57:30

out of the playhouse

57:33

really swing sit there . A matter of

57:35

fact , he had a trail camera on the the

57:38

leg of the slide . Oh , that's funny that's

57:40

crazy .

57:41

Like , yeah , that's crazy , that's

57:43

so funny . Did he kill a deer out of the playhouse

57:45

?

57:45

oh yeah , oh wow . What's crazy

57:48

is when they come out and start swinging

57:50

their kids too lot the day on the front of me and you're

57:52

sitting in a tree . That is funny

57:54

that's when you're like , oh , I

57:57

mean there's , you can't get mad at it because

58:00

you're like , there's times this year on

58:02

that one spot that I hunted that I

58:04

could . I had deer in there on me and I couldn't shoot

58:06

them because people are out in new york and I didn't

58:08

want a deer running . So

58:10

I said , well , I'm not going to get in that stand

58:13

, that particular stand , until an hour before

58:15

.

58:15

So you're hunting an acre like a half-acre

58:17

lot . Yeah , okay , so you're hunting a

58:19

half-acre lot on someone's property ?

58:21

Yeah , a couple places .

58:23

The smallest place I got is that yeah

58:25

so once a deer comes onto the half-acre

58:28

or quarter-acre , you're shooting . Yeah , I got acre or quarter

58:30

acre , you're shooting yeah , I got you and that's if the deer runs off

58:32

of the quarter acre . Whatever , you gotta get permission

58:34

to get the deer . Yeah , and that's when it turns

58:36

into .

58:37

That's when you can , that's when

58:39

you lose a spot you know . That's why you

58:41

, you don't need them go , they need

58:43

to go down in sight . Some

58:45

of those places I won't even hunt in the mornings

58:48

at all and I only hunt them during

58:50

the week in the afternoons so

58:52

why do you like to hunt in a situation where

58:55

it's all that stress I ? Don't

58:57

know , it's just something about it there's something about

58:59

it .

59:00

I think that he just , he just loves to

59:02

hunt , like my , like what I , what I see

59:04

here . You just love to hunt , you've always loved to hunt

59:06

, and this is just a more challenging

59:08

way to do it . Yeah , it's

59:11

more a more game .

59:12

I mean that's pretty cool .

59:13

Traditional way , but then again it's not traditional

59:16

because you're in a neighborhood , but what you're using

59:18

is traditional Andrew

59:21

and Sika , which isn't traditional .

59:23

You got all kinds of conflict .

59:25

I mean you're like a cowboy

59:27

hipster .

59:29

He's like pimping out like a thousand1,000

59:32

outfit with a homemade bow .

59:34

He's making his own arrows . I mean that dude's

59:36

legit . He just used the word low-key

59:38

. You know what I mean . I'm like I can't get

59:40

a read on this guy .

59:42

Yeah , he's everywhere . I seen

59:44

a dude walking down the neighborhood wearing Sika and

59:46

he had a recurved bow . Yeah , that's legit . Call 911

59:49

.

59:49

Yeah , turkey Fe . That's legit call 911 .

59:51

Yeah , turkey feather arrows , but

59:53

that one spot , like I say I won't , I won't

59:56

hunt it except , you

59:58

know , during the week afternoons . Only

1:00:00

that way you just lower your

1:00:02

risk of conflict

1:00:05

with somebody . So do you fish ? Oh

1:00:07

, yeah , yeah I .

1:00:10

I'm gonna do a whole lot . Do you fly fish ?

1:00:13

yeah , we're asking all kinds of questions

1:00:16

.

1:00:16

Okay , we're fascinated that ain't my main

1:00:18

flight , the main thing I like to fish for

1:00:20

is crappy and and cat catfish

1:00:24

now yeah I got a buddy lives in here in savannah

1:00:27

. We go down there and catch those speckled trout and reds

1:00:29

no yeah yeah , cool , we're

1:00:31

gonna , we're gonna , we're gonna

1:00:33

make some videos with that , with

1:00:35

my new boat .

1:00:36

Uh whacking on

1:00:39

him . You're a prime

1:00:41

example of just an uh well-rounded

1:00:44

outdoorsman just a country boy that's

1:00:46

having a good time .

1:00:47

You're very humble , you build your own , you're

1:00:49

making your own sport , challenging

1:00:52

to yourself , and you

1:00:54

don't give a shit what anybody thinks of you . So

1:00:57

I mean you're rocking sick

1:00:59

with a homemade bow in neighborhoods . I

1:01:02

mean dude , you're like a Fred Bear .

1:01:05

Like a hipster cowboy , fred Bear . It's pretty

1:01:07

neat .

1:01:07

It's pretty cool man .

1:01:08

You got everything going on man .

1:01:10

I had guys in my comments on

1:01:12

some stuff this year like I can only imagine

1:01:14

love . I really loved everything

1:01:17

you did till you killed a deer over bait

1:01:19

oh man I'm and

1:01:21

you lost me there . I'm like , well , so

1:01:24

long I can't tell a difference in the

1:01:26

way to meet taste thanks

1:01:28

for watching .

1:01:29

Thanks for your comment . That's

1:01:32

how I deal with it . Yeah , he cares what you comment

1:01:34

.

1:01:35

Oh , a hater's going to hate me . I'm sure you know .

1:01:37

Yeah , when you put yourself out there , you

1:01:39

better be ready . Oh , I get hate on all the time . I

1:01:42

mean it's ridiculous . Yeah , I do too

1:01:44

.

1:01:46

Well , man , it's awesome to talk to you and get you

1:01:48

on the podcast . I can't wait to see you out there

1:01:50

in the swamp we meet all kinds of people in this

1:01:52

podcast , but you're definitely y'all gotta

1:01:54

get to georgia man oh , we're gonna go

1:01:56

shoot some deer on a , on a trampoline

1:01:58

or something .

1:01:59

Well , I mean , we're gonna jump on a trampoline , shoot that thing

1:02:01

. Yeah , hey , listen . What's cool about it is we

1:02:03

can like eat waffle house

1:02:05

lost that spot

1:02:07

oh , he lost the spot

1:02:09

.

1:02:09

Golly mcdonald's mcdonald's

1:02:12

available uh , I

1:02:15

don't have any restaurants anymore in none

1:02:17

of my spots . Yeah , that's pretty cool

1:02:19

.

1:02:19

I got a golf course just imagine , though , imagine

1:02:21

sitting out there at the waffle house . You can see the wood , you can

1:02:23

see where you're hunting . You get the window seat , the nice window

1:02:25

seat where you can see your spot , and you're just like go

1:02:28

ahead and checking it out , doing a little bit of

1:02:30

.

1:02:30

Just leave you both and you and your overalls

1:02:32

hanging in the tree and walking to waffle house and then

1:02:34

come back . That's right that's crazy

1:02:36

.

1:02:37

It's crazy um well

1:02:39

, it's crazy how animals adapt to the

1:02:41

, the people in the cities , and it is . It's

1:02:43

really good I know we're just laughing

1:02:46

, having a good time , you know

1:02:48

but it is really crazy that you

1:02:50

can actually go in neighborhoods and kill deer

1:02:52

Consistently . You

1:02:55

think they just run off into the wild to stay

1:02:57

hidden , but they've learned to come out towards

1:03:00

the people . That's where they're safest . It's

1:03:02

crazy .

1:03:03

How everything's reversed . You know

1:03:05

, you see somebody with the fences

1:03:07

around their trees and the mesh over their

1:03:09

back . Yeah , you know that , that's

1:03:12

what you're looking for Absolutely .

1:03:13

Yeah , he's riding down the neighborhood .

1:03:15

Seriously , man with your

1:03:18

flowers ? Are your flowers being harassed

1:03:20

by the deer ? Yeah , no , no

1:03:22

, because I can't get rid of them .

1:03:23

He's like man . I've

1:03:26

noticed you got your garden wrapped up .

1:03:28

You got a deer problem , I would drag

1:03:30

equipment to Atlanta for three

1:03:32

years to grade these aggravating

1:03:35

pool decks on these mansions . You

1:03:37

know they did all the grading for the pools

1:03:39

concrete , and

1:03:42

the only reason I put up with all that aggravation

1:03:44

of the traffic and hauling is to

1:03:46

try to get some more permission . Yeah

1:03:49

, I mean literally it's an animal

1:03:51

.

1:03:51

You enjoy it absolutely .

1:03:52

Animal you enjoy it . For sure they come

1:03:54

out .

1:03:54

The first thing I ask them is how you feel about

1:03:57

the deer now

1:03:59

that I'm here on my quiver and you're easy to

1:04:01

talk to too . So it's not like you know . I mean , me

1:04:03

and brandon went to kansas and we knocked

1:04:05

on some doors , go turkey hunting and sometimes it's hard

1:04:07

to talk to people like , hey , can we kill

1:04:10

turkeys on your property ? You know , but

1:04:12

you know you are pretty easy to talk to , so

1:04:14

it comes natural my

1:04:16

wife's told me for years I need to be a salesman

1:04:19

I believe that , I believe

1:04:21

she's right why ,

1:04:23

well james , this is awesome man man , I enjoyed

1:04:25

it .

1:04:25

It's good to meet . It's gonna be a fun podcast

1:04:27

. It is gonna be fun .

1:04:28

I can't wait to see what you do out there in the swamp and , uh

1:04:31

, I hope we kill them last two does

1:04:33

and enjoy your boat .

1:04:34

I can't wait to see what you do out there in the swamp and I hope

1:04:36

we kill them . Last two does Enjoy your boat . I can't wait to

1:04:38

get that boat bloody . I got an urban spot that I can access by

1:04:40

river now and not have to deal with any other . You going

1:04:42

to send us pictures , send you a video , all

1:04:44

right , send us a video , that would be awesome .

1:04:46

Heck , yeah , man . Well , I think that wraps this

1:04:48

up , guys , make

1:04:53
