I had with Maria Littlepez's

0:03

Mario Lopez joining me now on Zoom

0:05

six time Any winner for Best Talk

0:07

Show Host Comedian Rosie O'donnald

0:10

Welcome to the show, Rosie. So nice to see you. Goodness,

0:13

see you too, Honey. You're looking great. Thank

0:15

you. I appreciate it. Um. A lot

0:17

of shake up in the world of daytime

0:19

talk right now, Ellen's leaving Kelly

0:22

Clarkson of course, is uh filating

0:24

that time slought Cherry Shepard taking over with Wendy

0:26

Williams Jennifer Hudson. Now maybe

0:29

on the scene. Um, you had

0:31

a very successful run. I was. I

0:33

was lucky enough to be one of your guests. I

0:35

don't know if you remember. Back in the day was a lot

0:37

of fun. What what's what's the key?

0:40

UM in that space, that's such a difficult space

0:42

to really strike

0:45

a chord with the audience, and UM, you the

0:47

perfect person ask Yeah.

0:49

I think you have to really be yourself, you know, and

0:51

try to only do what's real for you.

0:54

You know. During the run of my show, I

0:56

you know, would talk about things that my son who's

0:59

now twenty seven but was a newborn back

1:01

then, what he loved and

1:03

those things kind of took off, or

1:05

I would have hosts, I mean guests that I

1:08

that I love that sometimes you know, the network

1:10

would be like Rosemary Clooney. Again, I'm

1:12

like, yes, because I love Rosemary

1:14

Clooney and she can be on as long as I'm

1:16

you know, So if you do what you love,

1:19

I think the people can tell when it's real

1:21

and when you're just sort of doing

1:23

it for you know, for other reasons.

1:25

And I'm excited to see

1:27

I didn't know Jennifer Hudson had one that was a

1:29

news break for me. Yeah, it's supposed

1:32

to be UM in the fall, so

1:34

we'll see. It's all. It's a whole new landscape

1:36

out there. But you're right. When you're genuine

1:38

and and um relatable, little it'll

1:41

it'll come across in the audience will definitely

1:43

respond. Um. You've got a big

1:45

stand up benefit coming up benefiting

1:47

Friendly House. What what work do

1:50

they do in the community. They

1:52

help women get and stay sober

1:54

and they're the longest running sober house

1:56

for women in Los Angeles.

1:58

They've been open over for years. Was

2:01

started by a wonderful woman named Peggy who

2:03

wrestled brand introduced me too many

2:05

years ago, and I've got familiar

2:07

with their work and how they help women

2:10

who are struggling to stay sober,

2:12

and it's a it's a wonderful

2:14

program with tremendous success rate, and

2:17

I'm really proud to be associated with them.

2:19

That's awesome. That's awesome. I was not familiar with that.

2:21

Very cool. Um, I know, I know

2:23

you're still out there performing

2:26

on stage. I love that that we

2:28

can still get to see you live. There are

2:30

are do you find there are more rules to stand

2:32

up now or things you can or can't talk

2:35

about? Um? Do you feel a bit restricted?

2:38

Yeah, it's a little bit restricted now. I think you

2:40

know, things have changed politically, and

2:42

things have changed socially in the

2:44

country and the world even and

2:47

everyone seems to be on their best behavior,

2:49

and stand up is kind of about breaking

2:52

the rules and talking about

2:54

things that people maybe aren't ready to talk

2:56

about yet. So, um,

2:58

I think it's really interesting. And you combine

3:01

that with you know, people

3:03

getting violent with the performers on stage,

3:06

you know, the Dave Chappelle thing, and

3:09

people being attacked for for what they're

3:11

saying or what they believe in, you know, the

3:13

Will Smith Chris Rock thing, didn't help

3:16

anybody. I think it put comedians

3:18

sort of at risk in in a way, and

3:21

I think people are more trepidacious

3:23

about just you know, improving

3:26

and letting their brain go anywhere. Like I

3:28

always wonder what Robin Williams would have

3:31

done if he were around now, because he

3:33

had no way to stop that pinball machine

3:35

in his brain from going here to there to there

3:37

to their this accent, that accent

3:39

that you know. I wonder what he would

3:42

have been able to to face

3:44

with with the new kind of rules and

3:46

and unsaid regulations that monitor

3:49

free speech here in the United States. It's

3:51

fascinating. I'm a huge fan of stand up comedy.

3:53

I always liking it to that of of being

3:55

in the ring as a fighter, because you're there alone, completely

3:58

vulnerable, UM, all on your

4:00

own, and uh, you're improvising

4:02

and there sometimes and and and they're always

4:04

the truth tellers. Like you said, it kind of

4:07

keeps UM further

4:09

in the conversation. So I hope, I hope you and

4:11

others don't stop and you keep doing your things. Um.

4:14

One of the things that I love is that one of your first

4:16

brakes is on Star Search. I remember seeing that a

4:18

while back can today's talent

4:20

shows like an A. G. T And an Idol you

4:23

think produced that same sort of exposure.

4:25

Is just it's so there was not as

4:27

many options back in the day. So there

4:29

were there were only three channels, plus you

4:32

know Channel five by US, which was

4:34

WO or or something like that or Fox.

4:37

There were there were so few venues for

4:39

comedians to be on television, and The

4:41

Tonight Show with Johnny Carson only had like

4:43

three or four new comics a year, and

4:46

very few of them were women. You know,

4:48

I kind of feel like Johnny felt, you

4:50

know, he had Joan Rivers and had sort of broken

4:53

her and championed her and never

4:56

really was was out there

4:58

on the cusp of cutting it comedy for

5:00

females, with the exception

5:02

of Roseanne Barr, who we all know. You

5:04

know, she went on that show one night an

5:07

unknown person from Utah, and

5:09

the next day she was one of the biggest stars

5:11

in the world. He called her over and was

5:14

laughing at all her jokes. And you

5:16

know, there was a time when one spot on The Tonight

5:18

Show with Johnny Carson could

5:20

change your entire career and project you

5:23

into the stratosphere. And those

5:25

days are kind of gone. But American

5:27

idol for sure has produced

5:29

some of the biggest pop stars around now

5:32

and you can't deny that. Um,

5:34

but star Searched back in the day really had

5:36

a profound effect on people's careers,

5:38

including mine. Yeah. Ed McMahon,

5:41

God bless him. McMahon. I was twenty

5:43

two years old and I was standing there going, how

5:45

did this happen? You know? It

5:47

was it was his daughter. Ed McMahon's daughter

5:50

happened to be at a local comedy club where,

5:52

yeah, where I was, like, you know, just working

5:55

out a little said, I was twenty

5:57

or twenty one, and she came over to

5:59

me after the set and said, I'm Ed McMahon's daughter.

6:02

And I thought, oh, bowl, you are not a right

6:04

a right, And she was. And the next day

6:07

the phone rang I was still living at my parents

6:09

house, and it was a star

6:11

search saying when can you fly to l A. That's

6:13

an awesome story. Yeah, wild

6:16

A League of their Own is getting a reboot

6:19

on Amazon. Um,

6:21

that's so cool. Are they Are you familiar

6:23

at all with what the premps are? They essentially taking like

6:26

the movie and and just breaking it

6:28

down to installments as a series or started

6:30

picking up where they left off, or well they're

6:32

kind of picking up like at the end of League of their

6:34

Own. There was a black woman who threw the ball to Gina,

6:36

remember, and sort of trying to introduce

6:39

that they were going to integrate it a

6:41

little bit, not really fully back in that error,

6:43

but um so Abby Jacobson,

6:46

who was a good friend and I love her very much. She

6:48

was saying that she wanted to present

6:50

it in a more realistic manner at the emotional

6:53

lives of the players, their love

6:55

lives. There, how they manage

6:57

their sexuality when you know, a vast

6:59

major already of those women were gay.

7:02

And at the reunion

7:04

when we all got together and

7:06

and met him, it would be like, oh, hi, I'm

7:08

maybe when I played third base, this

7:10

is my roommate Blanche, you know, like

7:13

everybody nobody had the words back

7:15

then, and they were such pioneers, and I

7:18

think Abby has done a beautiful job of

7:20

incorporating that into

7:22

the mix. And I was lucky enough to do one

7:24

episode and I went down

7:26

there and it was so trippy, Mario

7:29

to see everyone in our uniform.

7:31

You know, it was like all of a sudden thirty

7:33

years had washed away and and there I

7:36

was back in the show

7:38

with a movie, only with a different cast, and

7:41

they were very kind to send me all

7:43

the episodes. And I think it's gonna be a big

7:45

hit. That is awesome, such a classic

7:47

and such a generational field. Just keeps

7:50

it's always on. I can never get you know, passing

7:53

through, flipping through like there it is there,

7:55

It is awesome. Um. I

7:57

saw recently you went Instagram

7:59

official with your girlfriend. Is that significant?

8:01

No big deal? Just having fun? No,

8:04

it's uh, it's great. You know. I wouldn't,

8:06

Um, I wouldn't casually,

8:09

you know, say that it was just having

8:12

fun. I think it's a good thing. It's a

8:14

positive thing in my life. And she makes me

8:16

very happy. Her name is Amy and she's

8:18

a massage therapist. And uh, she's

8:21

really great. That's

8:23

a good one for me, right, premissage scored

8:26

right there. Um, you're pretty active on TikTok.

8:29

What do you like about that particular platform

8:31

compared to the others. I haven't done that one yet. No,

8:34

once you do it, Mario, you'll get sucked in

8:36

because you need all these other people. If

8:39

you're you know your hashtags, you put in your hashtags

8:41

of what you like and what you're into, and

8:44

you know, it's as varied for me as like

8:46

little babies, because I love when like a

8:48

little baby is saying mama or dad dad

8:50

for the first time and the parents happened to get it

8:53

on camera, or the child walks

8:55

for the first time, or maybe it's a kid

8:57

with challenges who overcome something

8:59

and I don't know. It fills my heart with

9:01

that uh emotion that you get

9:03

when you go see a Broadway musical, you know. But

9:06

I love everything from surfing videos

9:08

to political videos and uh,

9:11

you get involved in people's lives and

9:13

you're able to sort of share your

9:16

own life as honestly as you can. You know, there

9:18

are some people who get dressed up and makeup and

9:20

have their perfect let me present to

9:22

you my perfect life, where you know,

9:24

no life is perfect like that. And a

9:26

lot of people have said about about my TikTok

9:28

presence, like I can't believe sometimes

9:30

you do a video and there's trash in the back of your

9:33

you know, like the house isn't always clean. I have a

9:35

nine year old and we live

9:38

together and do our best. But I

9:40

think the more real you can be on that platform,

9:42

the better that it is and and it's wonderful

9:45

to set out information to tell

9:47

people when you're doing something that you want

9:49

them to come to, like this event on

9:51

July sixteenth here in l A. And you

9:55

know, I just want I love it. Sometimes

9:57

you get in a TikTok hole, you know, you go

9:59

into the black coal of TikTok and you

10:01

look up and it's two hours later. Now,

10:04

okay, careful, be careful. I'm gonna check

10:06

it out. I've done the others. I'm gonna I'm gonna check

10:08

that one up. I like all your interests, um

10:10

your your varied interests. It's a wide strike

10:12

zone, no pun intended. You

10:15

can get tickets by the way to Rosie's

10:18

stand up for Friendly House, l A benefit

10:20

at on with Mario dot Com.

10:23

Rosie, so nice to uh catch

10:25

up. Thank you so much for taking the time and check in. Thank

10:28

you. And I just want everyone to know Kathy Griffin

10:30

is going to be doing her first sort of stand up live

10:32

headliner performance there for us

10:34

that night, so come and see her as

10:36

her voice has returned and all her comedy

10:38

is still vibrant and funny as ever.

10:41

There we go right on. Thank you, Rosie,

10:43

Thank you very great to see you by

10:47
