1:52

Stephen Ruiz on the show he is

1:54

a fan of college basketball and we

1:56

appreciate him being someone who defends the

1:58

honor of those who who love college

2:00

basketball. We're gonna talk some conflicting reports,

2:02

some big picture narratives that are happening

2:04

with the sport. We're gonna talk about

2:07

the hottest seat in college basketball. We're

2:09

also gonna talk about the perfect matches

2:11

for some of the programs that need

2:13

a new head coach. And we're gonna

2:15

do an updated version of the boo

2:17

bloods. We'll also do games to watch

2:19

and some shoutouts with Kyle at the

2:21

end. Kyle, anything else before we get

2:23

into today's episode. With Ruiz I feel

2:26

like we just found a hundred dollar

2:28

bill on the ground walking out of

2:30

a casino or something and guess what

2:32

he loves the Johnny so all that

2:34

but first Woody Durham Welcome

2:46

back to One Shining Podcast. It is a

2:48

Friday morning and we are nearing closer to

2:50

March. March Madness is right around the corner

2:52

and we got a lot to talk about

2:55

here in college basketball and help us out

2:57

the Ringer's very own. Stephen Ruiz, we are

2:59

fighting a upward battle in the world of

3:01

college basketball and we're happy to find an

3:03

ally in Ruiz. You are a true ally.

3:06

You are someone that's actually watching college basketball.

3:08

So welcome to the program. We appreciate you.

3:10

A true friend of the program. Good to

3:12

see you. this Friday morning. I'm excited to

3:15

listen or to be on it. I usually

3:17

listen. I'm a loyal listener. You have my

3:19

sort in this this war for college basketball.

3:21

Honestly, I'm enjoying the college basketball more than

3:23

I have. I know the pageant tree or

3:26

all the tie-ins with the college game aren't

3:28

the same like they were 20 years ago,

3:30

but for me the quality of the sport,

3:32

the quality of the games is better than

3:34

it's ever been in my life. And the

3:37

best part is that usually the sky is

3:39

falling in college basketball, but that it has

3:41

somehow transitioned to the NBA. There is a

3:43

like, you know, a give and take with

3:45

both those, you know, institutions going at each

3:48

other. But right now the NBA is worried

3:50

about ratings. They're worried about why nobody cares

3:52

while college basketball is thriving amongst the chaos,

3:54

right? We call it the open sea. It

3:57

was the wild wild west. Regardless, nobody. what's

3:59

going on but I want to start here

4:01

conflicting reports I've had a lot of general

4:03

fans start coming in my purview I've started

4:05

to do radio shows this week you start

4:08

talking to national commentators and they all keep

4:10

asking me why is college basketball so old

4:12

this year you know what why is it

4:14

Chad Baker Mazar for whatever reason someone put

4:16

out the Chad Baker Mazar Lukadonchitch like They're

4:19

both 25 years old and every national commentator

4:21

I guess saw that graphic. So they're all

4:23

focusing in on the fact that college basketball

4:25

is so old, Rick Patino and his documentary

4:28

has notated that. He said he can't replace

4:30

his team with freshmen from high school. But

4:32

if you also look at the mock draft,

4:34

pretty much every mock draft, the top five

4:36

Cooper flag, Dylan Harper, Ace Bailey, BJ Edge,

4:39

BJ Edge, and Yaku Jonas from Illinois. They

4:41

all happen to be college basketball freshmen and

4:43

they all happen to be playing really good

4:45

basketball and college basketball. So there's conflicting reports

4:47

happening, right? So there's two things can be

4:50

true at one time. We have great freshmen

4:52

in college basketball. We're going to talk about

4:54

your guy, dear queen, and the crab five

4:56

a little bit later. We also had this

4:58

other storyline that's happening about the Montverde starting

5:01

five. So Rob Wright, Liam McNeely, Cooper Flag,

5:03

Asinouel, there. All these guys having high major

5:05

impacts. basketball. So again, conflicting reports. On one

5:07

side, I have these people coming at me

5:10

and they're like, what happened to all the

5:12

diaper dandy freshman superstars? They're there. They're playing

5:14

great basketball. Also, we had these veteran teams

5:16

that are really good. Like big picture, what

5:18

is your big takeaway? It's true. Not a

5:21

lot of freshmen are starting on the top

5:23

10 teams in college basketball, but there are

5:25

a lot of good freshmen in college basketball.

5:27

You're only outside looking in watching all this

5:29

sort of stuff. Like what are you taking

5:32

away? Is it the impressive freshmen in college

5:34

basketball? Is it the veteran late in teams

5:36

that are really good? Like big picture. What

5:38

is your big takeaway? Back in the day

5:41

when I was younger, it was always, oh,

5:43

college basketball is too young. I don't know

5:45

any of these guys. They're all 19. They're

5:47

not good enough. No one stays for four

5:49

years and you don't develop these relationships. Now

5:52

we have these four years. play four-year players

5:54

with the freshman phenoms and still be barred

5:56

paying attention they're complaining about something but I

5:58

think it just speaks to what I said

6:00

at the beginning of the show the quality

6:03

of the sport is so good right now

6:05

and I think the mix of those two

6:07

you have these freshmen stars mixed with these

6:09

guys that have been around college basketball for

6:11

three four maybe even five years at this

6:14

point and when you mix those teams you

6:16

get a more fleshed out team you get

6:18

role players which we didn't really used to

6:20

have in college basketball 15 years ago you

6:23

had some role players who like could hit

6:25

it through hit a corner three and all

6:27

that but now you got you have guys

6:29

like you look at Auburn's roster and like

6:31

Denver Jones a guy like Denver Jones would

6:34

have never been at this level of college

6:36

basketball 15 years ago but now you can

6:38

appreciate a guy that can play defense and

6:40

hit an open three and championship contenders have

6:42

those players all come not only in the

6:45

starting lineup but coming off the bench now

6:47

so I Two things are true and I

6:49

think it's making college basketball better than it's

6:51

ever been. It's so funny just because of

6:54

the national perception. I just the reason I

6:56

bring that up is like as I was

6:58

doing the shows this week it was just

7:00

so funny to be the questions and I

7:02

was having to remind people the top 10

7:05

I think it's all college basketball players right

7:07

now if you look at most mock drafts

7:09

and that is obviously a different thing. Also

7:11

you have the international influence there's a lot

7:13

of hidden gyms in college basketball as we

7:16

see every single year but to go back

7:18

to the freshman. you know, one of the

7:20

best freshmen in the country. Obos. under the

7:22

radar but probably will be on everybody's radar

7:24

by the time we turn to March. Duke

7:27

has three freshmen that start Florida has zero

7:29

Alabama has one Texas Tech has one but

7:31

everybody else has zero Houston Tennessee Texas A&M

7:33

Iowa State St. John's it's all older teams

7:36

that are all older teams that are really

7:38

good in college basketball and again this used

7:40

to be the thing when one and done

7:42

came into play this was the knock on

7:44

college basketball I I just can't get up

7:47

with these teams I don't campus. Now we

7:49

have these guys. Now the complaint is obviously

7:51

like I watched and I broom play at

7:53

you know Murray State. or I think it

7:55

was at Morehead State, you know, in the

7:58

past and now. he's on Auburn and that's

8:00

the other frustration but again like you said

8:02

everybody's gonna complain about something regardless there's a

8:04

lot of town in college basketball a lot

8:07

of good players a lot of good freshmen

8:09

let's talk about the crab five Maryland is

8:11

your team that is a team that you

8:13

grew up falling in love with and this

8:15

group is fascinating 21 wins and counting to

8:18

get a nice win against USC I kind

8:20

of tapped into the terrapin message board community

8:22

last night as the game was happening live

8:24

I just wanted to see what the vibes

8:26

are like And it just reminded me that

8:29

Maryland's such a basketball school, like they're just,

8:31

you know, like any other blue blood, true

8:33

blood, new blood, whatever. When you have like

8:35

a 10 point lead that gets cut to

8:37

six, these people are like. What is what

8:40

is Willard doing? What one of these rotations?

8:42

Get Harris Smith out of the game. But

8:44

this bad, this crab five, which is the

8:46

nickname that we're going with now, is incredible.

8:49

Derek Queen, Joey, and Reese, Jacoby Gillespie, who

8:51

is very under the radar, Rodney Rice, who's

8:53

had some incredible games, Shelton Miguel, who is

8:55

like just one of those spot-up shooters that

8:57

can just go unconscious at any point. So

9:00

those five guys are playing the full load

9:02

of minutes. Really they have. is this group

9:04

obviously they made the tournament 23 lost Alabama

9:06

21 I think they lost Alabama too but

9:08

this is the most you know good vibes

9:11

around Maryland in quite some time right yeah

9:13

for me it's the best Maryland team or

9:15

maybe the most enjoyable team I know a

9:17

lot of people point to the COVID team

9:20

as the best team since 2010 and that

9:22

was Grievous Vasquez's senior year. That's the year.

9:24

They lost the Corey Lucius on the Buzzard

9:26

Beater. Still one of the most heartbreaking moments

9:28

in my history as a sports fan. I

9:31

just stood there for 30 minutes because it

9:33

was just all over and just an instant.

9:35

That's the beauty of college basketball. But no,

9:37

this team is so fun to watch and

9:39

maybe I overrate them a little bit just

9:42

because of how enjoyable they are to watch

9:44

but they're 14th on Ken Palm after beating.

9:46

The vibes are great. I was at an

9:48

early season game. The student section was barren.

9:50

There wasn't a lot of fans in the

9:53

general. section, the general seating. But last night

9:55

it was pretty packed. The student section was

9:57

all there. The wall behind the one basket

9:59

was totally filled, which we haven't seen in

10:02

quite some time. So yeah, the vibes are

10:04

good. They're selling crab five shirts, like in

10:06

between. And you can, they have like a

10:08

QR code on the screen to buy crab

10:10

five. I almost pulled the trigger, I almost

10:13

did. But I didn't, Gary Williams was in

10:15

the house last night. SB was sitting court

10:17

side. So yeah, the vibes are good. Outside

10:19

of Geronimo, they play DHS, Jashon Harris Smith,

10:21

who's a freshman, you can't really, or a

10:24

sophomore, you can't really shoot. And then they

10:26

have... I like his defensive like weapon, but

10:28

like he's like a, he can guard one

10:30

through four, you know what I mean? And

10:33

he's like a nice, like he can get

10:35

you some fouls that you can, you know,

10:37

carry over. So I think he does help,

10:39

even though, like I like those six. The

10:41

six and if they get Capari back, he's

10:44

been sick, he's been out. He's like a

10:46

stretch four type, he's really skinny, but really

10:48

tall and he can shoot three, he can

10:50

hit a corner three and can really jump

10:52

out of the gym. They try to throw

10:55

him at the oop last night and he

10:57

almost got it, but he got fouled. So

10:59

they have some pieces coming off the bench,

11:01

but it's all about the starting five. And

11:03

I think as you get into March. the

11:06

more that matters because benches get shorter, you

11:08

could play fewer guys, you have a little

11:10

more time in between games. So I think

11:12

this team is really built for March and

11:15

they have the guard play, they have a

11:17

freshman who can just take over games and

11:19

Derek Queen. And Derek Queen, best player I've

11:21

ever seen at Maryland. That goes back to

11:23

Juan Dixon. I've never seen a player. Oh

11:26

my goodness. Yeah, he's so good. That is

11:28

the highest compliment right there. I was going

11:30

to ask you, like I wrote down Best

11:32

Maryland team since win and I would assume

11:34

Mellow Trimble in that 2015 kind of era

11:37

would be the answer, but maybe this is

11:39

more fun and you're saying Juan Dixon, you're

11:41

going all the way back to that time.

11:43

Yeah, I would say 2010. That's the most

11:46

most realistic answer. 2010 was the year where

11:48

I think if they beat Michigan State, they

11:50

might go to the final four. in the

11:52

regular season finale in the ACC to kind

11:54

of split that title. That's the team. That's

11:57

the one that got away for me. But

11:59

I think this team has a chance to

12:01

not only go to like a Sweet 16

12:03

run, which we haven't seen consistently in Maryland

12:05

in 20 years. But I think this is

12:08

a team that could make a final four

12:10

run if things bounce right to them. Yeah,

12:12

best starting five in the country is what

12:14

some people are saying. That's why they had

12:16

the nickname the Crab Five. If you go

12:19

to CBB Analytics, the biggest increase in points

12:21

per game from last season to this season,

12:23

Maryland's number one plus 14.5 points per game.

12:25

So this five points per game. From last

12:28

season to this season, Maryland's number one plus

12:30

14.5 points per game. So this five with

12:32

there. That just felt like something that I

12:34

would say on the show is kind of

12:36

a joke and Kevin, and Kevin and saying

12:39

it. earnestly and also you know advocating for

12:41

Derek Queen out there in the public. I'm

12:43

a big fan of Derek Queen it sounds

12:45

like he's like a really you know nice

12:47

kid that just loves basketball and he also

12:50

has great touch great feel and he enjoy

12:52

and Reese like as much as everyone's talking

12:54

about Michigan and myself included talking about Danny

12:56

Wolf and Black Golden they have their own

12:59

big to big game where both those guys

13:01

are pretty much a guaranteed double double double

13:03

every single night. and yeah they're not doing

13:05

like the big on big pick and roll

13:07

gimmick that Michigan runs but yeah well that's

13:10

because danny wolf is like a point guard

13:12

in a six nine six ten body right

13:14

it was funny there was I think they

13:16

were talking to uh I think was trachoff

13:18

and read about that and he was like

13:21

I don't understand why teams just don't switch

13:23

like you have two bigs after just switch

13:25

to pick a roll and then and they

13:27

kind of got to Michigan with that but

13:29

yeah Julia Reese is maybe the most improved

13:32

like last year or two years ago where

13:34

you could trust him to make a 10-foot

13:36

push shot, often like a pick and roll.

13:38

And now he's making that shot with regularity

13:41

and he can get to his left hand

13:43

in the post and when he does that

13:45

and they don't have an answer in the

13:47

down low and a lot of teams don't,

13:49

a lot of teams don't have that size

13:52

in this age of college basketball can really

13:54

cause some problems. When he gets in a.

13:56

foul trouble that's when they've gotten into trouble

13:58

as a team and that because they don't

14:00

have depth especially and you know in the

14:03

paint Toronto is a good hustle player but

14:05

he's not a guy you can throw the

14:07

ball down low and he's gonna go get

14:09

you a bucket so that's the one concern

14:12

is frontline death but those two guys I

14:14

agree they're right up there with Wolf and

14:16

Golden is maybe the best like twin tower

14:18

pairing in the country right now. And it's

14:20

funny, the point about Willard, the Willard, when

14:23

he said that if he was a white

14:25

guy from Europe, he's been like escalating that

14:27

all year. Like at first it started, I

14:29

was like, this was the 80s, he'd be

14:31

the top pick. And he was like, yes,

14:34

it was like 15 years ago. He could

14:36

jump a little bit and he'd be the

14:38

personality. He was like, I gotta get people

14:40

to understand how good there Queen is, which

14:42

I really do appreciate him advocating for how

14:45

good he is, because he is a fun

14:47

watch. He's got the smile going, you know

14:49

what I mean? He's having fun out going,

14:51

you know what I mean? He's having fun

14:54

out there. Yeah, exactly. He's got the long

14:56

sleeves. Yeah, whatever you want to do. It's

14:58

fun. It's good vibes. I feel like the

15:00

image makeover of Bail and basketball this year

15:02

is great for college basketball. Like you said,

15:05

SVP's talking about it. You got Gary Williams

15:07

showing out. All the old heads are coming

15:09

out. And honestly, you know, we live in

15:11

a world where like the NBA, your success

15:13

in the NBA kind of hurts your college

15:16

success. But there are guys that kind of

15:18

supersede that and won Dixon as one of

15:20

those guys. I think for everybody. Like if

15:22

you're a Man, Juan Dixon, people like, oh,

15:25

hell of a player. Everyone knows. Everyone knows.

15:27

Yeah, everybody. Everybody. I like it. One last

15:29

tangential terrapin thing, Mark Turjan was at a

15:31

Carolina basketball game. The Carolina NC State game

15:33

to be exact. He was wearing a North

15:36

Carolina hoodie. There's a lot of speculation. Obviously,

15:38

former Maryland head coach, people talking about why

15:40

this could be happening. His son does go

15:42

to North Carolina. So there is some reasoning.

15:44

This is my first time seeing him in.

15:47

something North Carolina, it got my wheel spinning.

15:49

Does Maryland still have any sort of like,

15:51

do they have rights to Mark Turgen and

15:53

what Mark Turgen is up to? Are we

15:55

staying tapped in on Turgen News or are

15:58

we moving past it and join the real

16:00

time right now? I think we're moving past

16:02

it. I have no ill will towards Turg

16:04

and I thought there were some teams that

16:07

could have been better than they were. I

16:09

thought there were some players that didn't develop

16:11

quite as much as that you would have

16:13

hoped when they got there. But he was

16:15

a decent coach. He was a decent coach.

16:18

He was a replacement level coach. And I

16:20

thought he did a good job of maintaining

16:22

the program for a little bit after Gary

16:24

Williams stepped away. That was always going to

16:26

be a tough guy to follow. I'm not

16:29

going to like them. He's not Gary Williams

16:31

and he's not the guy I grew up

16:33

that I know they were like courting Sean

16:35

Miller at the time I would have been

16:38

excited for that but I don't know it

16:40

was it was it was a tough act

16:42

to follow and I thought he did his

16:44

best but I don't know. I don't keep

16:46

up with Mark Turgeon. If he goes to

16:49

North Carolina, he goes anywhere. I'm not going

16:51

to be like hoping he fails or hoping

16:53

he succeeds. I don't really have an opinion

16:55

on that. I don't think anything's going to

16:57

come of this, but I do like the

17:00

idea of Turgeon like going in as the

17:02

DA, the designated asshole on the staff of

17:04

North Carolina, just someone to run practice and

17:06

make these guys, you know, kind of have

17:08

the, oh, I got to sit up straight

17:11

up. where were you raised? You know, yelling

17:13

at his name. Now everybody's like, you know,

17:15

they're turning backwards as to, this is what

17:17

we need in locker rooms. And Mark Turgen,

17:20

if he's so desired to get back in

17:22

the locker room, by all accounts, he does

17:24

not have that desire, he does not have

17:26

that desire, but he does not have that

17:28

desire, but he does not have that desire,

17:31

but he does not have. actually looks good

17:33

in a basketball game. So maybe Mark Turgeon

17:35

should go to every game. That would be

17:37

an encouraging sign. I want to talk about

17:39

Mazoo. their fun story last year to not

17:42

win a game in the SEC. They just

17:44

had the most memeable moment ever. The hush.

17:46

after they get the big win over Alabama.

17:48

Mark Mitchell, a Duke de facto was incredible

17:51

in this game, 31 points, 11 to 15

17:53

from the field, three assists, three rebounds. After

17:55

the game, the whole team does the OKC,

17:57

we do the interview together. They tried to

17:59

give the microphone to Bates, and Bates, literally

18:02

just rips it off and make sure that

18:04

Mark Mitchell gets the microphone and it was

18:06

like this great team moment in the world

18:08

of mercenaries and college basketball kind of getting

18:10

picked on in the portal. and all this

18:13

sort of stuff. Mazoo is this weird bright

18:15

spot in this world of this strange landscape.

18:17

I called it Water World. Nobody knows where

18:19

land is right now as we pillage around,

18:21

but the hush-out was great. Dennis Gates was

18:24

great after this game. Mazoo could not miss,

18:26

they shot 60% from the floor as a

18:28

team. As far as Mazoo being such a

18:30

big story and actually being a threat, how

18:33

shocking is that and how much fun is

18:35

this scene? Yeah, I think it's just one

18:37

of the bright spots of the transfer portal.

18:39

You can put a team together in a

18:41

couple years. We saw like Kansas State make

18:44

a run in the tournament doing the same

18:46

thing a couple years ago. And with Missouri,

18:48

what makes the story so cool is that

18:50

these are like transfers that weren't necessarily wanted

18:52

in the portal. Like they were kind of

18:55

like some our bigs. Indiana basically said we'll

18:57

drive you to the airport. Right. Right. They

18:59

probably drove him to Missouri. But. It's just

19:01

the way that they play. It's such a

19:04

fun style of play. They just run up

19:06

and down the court and they chat threes.

19:08

at Dennis Gates coming on the mic. If

19:10

I was an opposing coach, I would kind

19:12

of weaponize that going forward. Like Greenham, like

19:15

they don't even have enough money for you

19:17

guys to rush the court. I mean, that's

19:19

a little bit of concern. But no, it's

19:21

a fun team to watch. And it's surprising

19:23

where they were in what League they're in,

19:26

but it's a fun team to watch. And

19:28

it's surprising where they were and what league

19:30

they're in, but it's surprising where they were,

19:32

and then make. on defense which I thought

19:34

they did especially in this last game against

19:37

Alabama that really blew up like Mark Sears

19:39

he had a big game but he had

19:41

to work for that that game and had

19:43

to go to the the bucket and get

19:46

into the pain wasn't just working too hard

19:48

like Mark Sears is playing like he's the

19:50

only guy on his yeah I was just

19:52

like dude you have so much town around

19:54

you like let's utilize it but it does

19:57

feel like Mark Sears is taking the hard

19:59

way like there's an open path and he's

20:01

like I'm gonna run through this wall you're

20:03

like I'm gonna run through this wall you're

20:05

like no step back and hit a 30

20:08

foot three over the wall is what I'm

20:10

gonna do but I thought that was like

20:12

that was like that's what they're what they

20:14

did so much like that's what they did

20:17

they're playing like that they're just so much

20:19

fun to watch. Yeah they are and Dennis

20:21

Gates said like you mentioned he did grab

20:23

the mic he asked him not to rush

20:25

the court and after the game he was

20:28

asked about that he said we need the

20:30

money to go to NIL which NIL has

20:32

become like this ubiquitous term that can be

20:34

used in any way but it really like

20:36

name image likeness deals that were approved have

20:39

now come into like a pay for play

20:41

like quasi term that you can just say

20:43

NIL and I just I don't understand why

20:45

nobody has followed up on that but it's

20:47

like become its own thing right like NIL

20:50

is not even name image likeness in the

20:52

way that they're talking about it you know

20:54

what I mean like it's it's very strange

20:56

how we've gotten to this point but everyone's

20:59

like we get what you're saying yes we

21:01

need to save the money so we can

21:03

pay these kids You missed the end of

21:05

like a one-on-one, a front end of a

21:07

one-on-one, they blame it on NIL. They're like,

21:10

you know, NIL is really affecting us here.

21:12

But yeah, it's become like a booby man.

21:14

How about Kevin Gates gets blown out by

21:16

Carolina after the game and his post-game press

21:18

conference. They're like, a lot of coaches would

21:21

have taken a final four momentum and built

21:23

a, you know, had his post game press

21:25

conference cut short. The fire alarm went off.

21:27

This was a very interesting moment. It was

21:30

about. one minute of time, he started kind

21:32

of like continuing with this press conference, he's

21:34

like, did someone pull the fire alarm? And

21:36

then the lady's voice, you know, like the

21:38

automated voice just starts going fire. fire. And

21:41

then NATO's had a great moment. He said,

21:43

yeah, they were on fire tonight. That's for

21:45

sure. She's about two hours late. And so

21:47

that was a nice moment with, you know,

21:49

Alabama gets run out of the building. There's

21:52

plenty of moments, you know, there's plenty of

21:54

moments, you know, for NATO's to kind of

21:56

be an a hole after the game, there's

21:58

plenty of moments, you know, for NATO's to

22:00

kind of be an a hole after the

22:03

game. keep up with like the Dan Dockage

22:05

timelines. So I'm checking this page after every

22:07

Maryland game. You're making sure to check his

22:09

page. Well he had tweeted I guess last

22:12

year, you know, Dan Dockage, you know, we

22:14

don't engage obviously, I don't, you know, we

22:16

don't engage obviously, I don't, you know, we

22:18

don't engage obviously, I don't know, obviously, I

22:20

don't, you know, we don't engage obviously, I

22:23

don't, obviously, you know, you know, we don't,

22:25

Not most people would delete that tweet or

22:27

like you know I don't know maybe muted

22:29

at least but he quote tweets it and

22:31

doubles down very strange and now you got

22:34

Mazoo fans who are very passionate they're going

22:36

at his neck and I guess it's all

22:38

for attention but I just want to say

22:40

Tamar Bates Gudos to you for just like

22:43

having a great season because then he passed

22:45

the mic like that's a great year passes

22:47

the bike after and you watch him play

22:49

like he doesn't seem like a selfish player

22:51

he makes the pass if there's an open

22:54

guy but yeah Dachage had a dare queen

22:56

tweet because I guess queen was choosing between

22:58

Indiana and Maryland he was like we're lucky

23:00

we didn't get that prep school entitled guy

23:02

and then you meet like you listen to

23:05

Derek queen talk and he's like the nicest

23:07

kid ever. And he doubled down on it

23:09

too in January. They lost the Northwestern on

23:11

the Buzzerbeater. He's like, haven't heard from my

23:13

Maryland fans recently in parentheses, Queen. And then

23:16

Queen has ripped off like 25 point games.

23:18

Yeah, he's been incredible. I mean, yeah. at

23:20

17 rebounds against USC last night. And like

23:22

I said, they didn't even play great in

23:25

that game and Maryland fans, rightfully so, were

23:27

like. what's going on with this group. But

23:29

that's how you know you're a really good

23:31

team. It's like when you're winning games and

23:33

you're up double digits, you're still frustrated with

23:36

the way that you're playing. You're like, this

23:38

is the worst team I've ever seen. What

23:40

is Willard doing? That is college basketball. And

23:42

that's the best feeling in the world when

23:44

you have that. And as someone who has

23:47

lost it recently, I just wanted to tip

23:49

the cap to those who are enjoying that

23:51

experience. During President's Day savings at the Home

24:15

24:18

wants to feel as a head coach, the

24:20

hot seat and there are a lot of

24:22

hot seats in college basketball. We're trying to

24:24

figure out the hottest seat. There was obviously

24:26

a lot of conversation about Indiana. Mike Woodson

24:29

said my seat is on fire the building

24:31

is on fire I will get out of

24:33

this building so good for him he is

24:35

going to step aside he is going to

24:38

get paid out they're going to figure out

24:40

some sort of exit package I've been told

24:42

which is good for him some sort of

24:44

yearly pay out of like a million dollars

24:46

I think he had like four million dollars

24:49

left so like Mike Woodson a little retirement

24:51

on the way out Kudos to him, he's

24:53

a Bob Knight guy, you know, he did

24:55

what he had to do. So Indiana will

24:57

be open and available. There are some questions,

25:00

obviously, about what's going to happen with Villanova.

25:02

That's another, like a Blue Blood S team

25:04

that's going to be discussed. As far as

25:06

Miami being open, that's a conversation that a

25:09

lot of people are already having. Florida State

25:11

is open, Leonard Hamilton, also very similar to

25:13

Mike Woodson, just going to retire. paying NIL

25:15

and things like that. Speaking. of you know

25:17

the old ubiquitous term there. And then we

25:20

have some question marks like a Bobby Hurley,

25:22

does Arizona State continue on? Jeff Capel potentially

25:24

could be an under the radar guy at

25:26

Pittsburgh after the expectations of the off season.

25:28

West Miller, same deal at Cincinnati, red aughtry

25:31

at Syracuse. So there's a lot of names

25:33

and a lot of you know conversations to

25:35

be had as far as the hottest seat.

25:37

From your vantage point. Neptune because the Villanova

25:39

people in my life tend to think so,

25:42

but I still think the leash might be

25:44

longer than they think. But what about you?

25:46

Who has the hottest seat right now? Yeah,

25:48

I would give Neptune at least one more

25:51

year. We've kind of seen him turn things

25:53

around over the year. We've kind of seen

25:55

him turn things around over the course of

25:57

the season, like you've never seen him like

25:59

start the season out hot and then continue

26:02

that on, but they've started out slow and

26:04

then kind of figured things out and then

26:06

figured things out. And they have one of

26:08

the best players in the country in Eric

26:10

Dixon. I mean, it's almost one of those

26:13

things where you wish we had trades in

26:15

college basketball because, you know, when January was

26:17

coming up, they could have traded Eric Dixon

26:19

for like, you know, three future McDonald's all

26:22

Americans or something, you know, what I mean?

26:24

Like, to trade them to the Nets for

26:26

like, you know, three future McDonald's, all Americans

26:28

or something, you know, what I mean? sink

26:30

or swim time for that program. And their

26:33

ability to hang on to that status is

26:35

one of the, they're not like a blue

26:37

blood, but I think they're right below that

26:39

in the history of college basketball. They have

26:41

Carmelo Sun coming next year, I believe. I

26:44

wouldn't want to mess up that recruiting thing

26:46

that's only been there that's been like their

26:48

only win in the last five years really.

26:50

So like I think that's a big hire

26:52

if they do choose to move on and

26:55

I'd be interested to see like what kind

26:57

of road they go down like do you

26:59

go down the retread road the guy who

27:01

maybe was a star before and isn't a

27:04

star anymore necessarily or do you go for

27:06

like the big hire. the recruiter, or do

27:08

you go for like the Mark Pope type

27:10

hire where you're like, let's just get back

27:12

to playing a style of basketball that we're

27:15

going to enjoy watching. I don't know if

27:17

that's a two, three, coach. I don't know

27:19

how many of those coaches are still out

27:21

there. But that's the the hire I want

27:23

to see. And I think that's going to

27:26

dictate a lot of things, especially in the

27:28

ACC. We need more ACC contenders. in the

27:30

future if they do get one of those

27:32

guys in there. Especially as you look at

27:35

the SEC and one of the you know

27:37

big talking points obviously is the coaching in

27:39

the conference I mean you have to match

27:41

that at some level. I mean Brownell has

27:43

taken a step up there's going to be

27:46

you know obviously rumors that Indiana will reach

27:48

out to him I'm not sure that's going

27:50

to actually happen but rightfully so he's going

27:52

to be in that conversation so people are

27:54

going to try to coach the best coaches

27:57

that you have and there's only been two

27:59

coaches in the conference right now that have

28:01

made it to the final four they happen

28:03

to be two guys who are on a

28:06

hot-ish seat when you talk about Kevin Keats

28:08

and Hubert Davis so I mean the ACC

28:10

needs to figure something out red aughtry I

28:12

think you're right he gets one more year

28:14

he is beloved by you know by all

28:17

accounts the administration and the people and the

28:19

powers that be at Syracuse baye they'll keep

28:21

red on just for the Kian Anthony of

28:23

it all. And then, you know, I think

28:25

that could be a wrap depending on who

28:28

knows, maybe the year goes great and he

28:30

does what his dad did and they win

28:32

the national championship and everyone's like Syracuse basketball.

28:34

What a great year, they're back. But I

28:36

think red is definitely up there. As far

28:39

as perfect matches, Indiana, I want to talk

28:41

about that because it does seem like Chris

28:43

Beard, the agenda has been pushed. Every corner

28:45

of basketball conversation Rick Patino did it on

28:48

part in my take And I've seen it

28:50

kind of ripple out from there but Chris

28:52

Beard seems to be The the general talking

28:54

point like he's the best guy for Indiana

28:56

I've obviously has Indiana background so that makes

28:59

sense He's a hard-nosed you know kind of

29:01

considered his own version of a DA a

29:03

designated asshole as I like to call him.

29:05

So that's good for Indiana basketball, but I

29:07

do think Ben McCollum is my pick I

29:10

goes into the Mark Pope hiring category of

29:12

things, it's like, let's swing for the future,

29:14

let's do something fun, like let's not bring

29:16

in this strange baggage where we've already seen

29:19

this guy in a pressure cooker at Texas

29:21

and it didn't go as great and like

29:23

then put him in another, I don't know.

29:25

I just feel like that's a strange thing.

29:27

So McCollum to me is the safest hire

29:30

and I feel like they need to do

29:32

that before Iowa tells friend McCaffrey, you know,

29:34

thanks a lot and gives him his retirement

29:36

package and goes after McCollum in their own

29:38

state. So I feel like there's a bit

29:41

of an arms race to get McCollum and

29:43

if I'm Indiana, I get in that pool

29:45

quicker and sooner than later. Even like a

29:47

noter game who could be moving on from

29:49

Shrewsbury, I think that would be a smart

29:52

hire for them. But yeah, that's the guy

29:54

that would be at the top of my

29:56

list. If I'm not going for a retread

29:58

guy, I'm going for Ben McCollum. Just what

30:01

he's pulled off at Drake in his first

30:03

year is amazing. And like, he's also a

30:05

guy who you can make any argument you

30:07

want about Drake and what it says about

30:09

the state of college basketball. You'd be like,

30:12

you be like, five starters. Four of them

30:14

played for him at Division II, Northwest Missouri

30:16

State, but he's got a guy from Wyoming

30:18

too. But also it's... a point for continuity.

30:20

Like he's had these four players in his

30:23

starting lineup for the last two years. It

30:25

doesn't matter if they're at the Division II

30:27

level or the Division I level, they still

30:29

play the same. And when you watch them

30:32

play, like that's what stands out. It's like

30:34

how they play basketball. It's just a beautiful

30:36

version of the sport where the offense never

30:38

stagnates. Like, after the first action gets blown

30:40

up or whatever, it doesn't work, they just

30:43

flow right into another one. And then everything

30:45

builds on top of each other. I'm one

30:47

of those guys that's easily scanned by coaches.

30:49

Like if a coach sounds smart, I'm like,

30:51

oh, this is the smartest coach and stuff.

30:54

This is John Wood, where you're guarding. But

30:56

he's like done a couple of podcasts. Like

30:58

I listen to like Slapping Glass podcast, he

31:00

did an episode of that, and he's just,

31:02

the way he talks about basketball just makes

31:05

sense, especially in the modern era. And the

31:07

way that he constructs his roster, he only

31:09

plays five guys, but he does it on

31:11

purpose. It's not like a like a Maryland

31:14

thing like a Maryland thing where they don't

31:16

like a Maryland thing where they don't like,

31:18

he just like, he just have debts, he

31:20

just wants, he just wants, he just wants,

31:22

he just wants, he just wants, he just

31:25

wants, he just wants, he just wants, he

31:27

just wants, he just wants, he just wants,

31:29

he just wants, he just wants, that continuity,

31:31

that continuity, he just wants, that continuity, that

31:33

continuity, that continuity, that continuity, They're a fun

31:36

team to watch. I know they dropped a

31:38

game recently to Bradley, but throughout the year,

31:40

they've been punching above their weight. They've played

31:42

good schools. They beat Vani. They beat Miami.

31:45

They took it to Miami. That would be

31:47

the guy that I'm looking for if I'm

31:49

not looking for a retrain. If I'm looking

31:51

for an up-and-comer, he's one everywhere he's been,

31:53

and that includes Drake now. Yeah, and he

31:56

played there at his old school, Northwestern State,

31:58

or Northwest Missouri State. There's a lot of

32:00

directional things. Yeah, I know. I'm just like,

32:02

I get lost. But yeah, they were D2

32:04

Legends and brings those guys over. Stirts leads

32:07

the country and Kim Palm game MVP. So

32:09

if you don't know the name Bennett Stirts,

32:11

you will know it when March comes around.

32:13

Drake is going to, I mean, hopefully, you

32:15

know, they win the March to the arch

32:18

to the arch, but if they don't. They

32:20

should get in that large bit. The bubble

32:22

is super weak. I assume that they will

32:24

get kind of the benefit of the doubt

32:27

as far as like teams that are on

32:29

the bubble just because it does feel like

32:31

the committee likes Drake and Drake's been a

32:33

familiar. kind of you know into double A

32:35

tournament team. So I think they can get

32:38

in. I think McCollum is going to be

32:40

the talk of the town. And you mentioned

32:42

Miami. I think that game broke Miami. Like

32:44

I think that was the end of their

32:46

season when they went mascara and all these

32:49

like these guys are just going off against

32:51

them. Like who the hell are these guys?

32:53

We didn't even scout this game. And Stertz

32:55

was incredible in that game. And now the

32:58

conversation is who is Miami going to go

33:00

after? They went to their first final four

33:02

program history. They obviously have a lot of

33:04

money. They have Adidas. It is a really

33:06

interesting job. I have been told that Will

33:09

Wade is the number one candidate. Is that

33:11

a perfect match? Because when I hear that,

33:13

it feels like a perfect match. Yeah, that's

33:15

what I had. I have a list and

33:17

Will Wade was in parentheses next to Miami.

33:20

I think he's the perfect player for that

33:22

type of play that Miami usually gets. that

33:24

like aggressive we're gonna run up and down

33:26

the court we're just gonna get in get

33:28

in your jersey we're gonna play switching defense

33:31

and play really aggressively I think it just

33:33

works for Miami in the type of talent

33:35

they can attract not only with their location

33:37

where they play but also the NIL resources

33:40

they have I think they're gonna be able

33:42

to buy a team if they want to

33:44

and Will Wade could hit the ground running.

33:46

He's one of those coaches where there is

33:48

some baggage like obviously with how it ended

33:51

at LSU but when you hire Will Wade

33:53

you know you're getting a certain style of

33:55

basketball and you're getting a really high floor.

33:57

Like you're getting a team that's gonna be

33:59

maybe top 30 in Ken Palm defensive efficiency

34:02

as long as you can hit some shots

34:04

on the other end you're probably going to

34:06

make the tournament and maybe be a sweet

34:08

16 team. I think with Miami, like, that's

34:11

where you got to be shooting. That's the

34:13

type of coach you need to bring in.

34:15

And then maybe every eight years you get

34:17

the right talent, you have the right coach

34:19

in place, and then you make a final

34:22

four run. I think that's a realistic goal

34:24

for Miami rather than like, let's go fine

34:26

as a coach that's going to turn us

34:28

into the next Duke or whatever. Yeah, and

34:30

Will Wade will be perfectly set up there.

34:33

The AD was at Clemson with him. They

34:35

have a past relationship. Apparently he tried to

34:37

hire him once upon a time when Brad

34:39

Brunel was on the hot seat as he

34:41

was basically every year for about a decade.

34:44

They kicked the tires on a decade as

34:46

he was basically every year for about a

34:48

decade. They kicked the tires on Will Wade

34:50

and St. Paul. facilities that he needs to

34:53

St. John's and the fundraising and all that

34:55

stuff is just exhausting and Miami says hey

34:57

we have all these resources we have the

34:59

sunshine we have Pat Riley down here right

35:01

next to you that you could have this

35:04

kind of you know relationship with the heat

35:06

and build like your own version of a

35:08

culture it might be like maybe there is

35:10

some sort of huge sales pitch to Rick

35:12

Patino to be a snowbird and come down.

35:15

I was going to jump in for you

35:17

Kyle, I was going to jump in for

35:19

you. Don't break up Rick Patino and St.

35:21

John's please. We're not breaking him up. We're

35:24

not breaking him up. Because he loves me

35:26

to New York icon. I'm just saying if

35:28

you're Miami and you're a smart person, that's

35:30

something that you like. You maybe do that

35:32

before you call anybody else. But we'll wait

35:35

is perfect. Rick Patino, stay with St. John.

35:37

Kyle, I appreciate you cutting that out of

35:39

the podcast because that was a good move.

35:41

Florida State, they're also fascinating. Leonard Hamilton has

35:43

been there forever. It's going to be really

35:46

tough to watch Florida State without Leonard Hamilton

35:48

on the sidelines. I love the Leonard Hamilton

35:50

mock turtle neck era like the Burgundy mock

35:52

era like the Burgundy mock, so strong, so

35:54

smooth, so cool, the best. I don't know

35:57

what Florida State basketball is without Leonard Hamilton

35:59

and I don't know what the perfect match

36:01

is. Yeah, I'm totally with you. Like all

36:03

I've known about Florida State basketball is Leonard

36:06

Hamilton. Like I... Steve Robinson before and then

36:08

Leonard Hamilton, but it feels like one or

36:10

else same. Maybe do a penny thing and

36:12

let him coach the team. I don't know,

36:14

like I have Dennis Gates down, I don't

36:17

know if Dennis Gates is going to want

36:19

to leave with the momentum he's building at

36:21

Missouri, especially being in the SEC, going to

36:23

ACC. Cover your ears, Tate a dying conference,

36:25

maybe, some would say. I don't know if

36:28

that's the right move. Not a ESPN. They

36:30

said give us not more gear. That's right.

36:32

But I think it would be a perfect

36:34

fit there. And I think he could attract

36:37

the same type of players that Leonard Hamilton

36:39

brought in, just bringing some big athletic guys

36:41

who can run the court. And that's what

36:43

you got to shoot for. I think you

36:45

just got to replicate the Leonard Hamilton experience.

36:48

It wasn't that bad. I know the heights.

36:50

weren't as high as they wanted the COVID

36:52

year, they probably had their best team, which

36:54

is unfortunate. But there were some good teams

36:56

in there, and there's some teams that were

36:59

primed to make some runs in the tournament,

37:01

which is gonna be hard to build at

37:03

a team like Florida State. They can't even

37:05

do it in football. So like how confident

37:07

can you be that they're gonna do with

37:10

basketball? I know and I'm gonna miss the

37:12

airport test for FSU I mean even this

37:14

team like that the size of their group

37:16

is insane that's a Leonard Hamilton staple so

37:19

I hope they can stick to that I

37:21

feel like to me Jerome Tang's just somehow

37:23

feels like a random name that would just

37:25

come out of nowhere and then when he

37:27

goes there you're like oh yeah I guess

37:30

that does make a lot of sense that

37:32

he would want to go to Florida State

37:34

but who knows I think there's plenty of

37:36

names you could throw out pretty much any

37:38

name retread or like on the peripheral and

37:41

say hey they could be good at Florida

37:43

State and I would probably you know buy

37:45

the idea at this point if you sell

37:47

it to me. last one I wanted to

37:50

hit now Cal Neptune is still the head

37:52

coach and like you said we both think

37:54

he's gonna get one more year but when

37:56

you think about Villanova and the reason why

37:58

he maybe should get one year it's like

38:01

Who do you go after if you are

38:03

Villanova? And like who really entices you? And

38:05

at this point, like can't you just keep

38:07

the thing going and see what works? Because

38:09

I'm not really sure there's an answer out

38:12

there. And you know, I put for Villanova,

38:14

like Speedy Claxton was always my answer, but

38:16

you know, Speedy's not having the best year.

38:18

And I don't feel like that would be

38:20

like some huge selling point. So I don't

38:23

know what the home run hire hire is

38:25

for Villanova. And that's for Villanova. Ah, no,

38:27

that's a tough school to pick, just where

38:29

they are, the biggies. It's really hard. Like,

38:32

you think of, like, even like a T.J.

38:34

Altsonberger, like, I don't know if he would

38:36

fit Villanova, like, if he's gonna leave the

38:38

Midwest, if he's gonna leave the Midwest, if

38:40

he's gonna leave the Midwest, if he's gonna

38:43

be East Coast guy, it doesn't seem like

38:45

a good fit for them, and I think

38:47

he could get them to a good spot,

38:49

maybe not back to where, But it's really

38:51

hard. I don't think, I don't see a

38:54

coaching star out there that really fits where

38:56

they're at as a program and where they

38:58

want to be. So I would, I would

39:00

definitely give Neptune one more year and just

39:03

see if, you know, he's got the talent,

39:05

let's see if he could put it all

39:07

together in this, what would it be his

39:09

fourth year next year? And see if they

39:11

make a run and if not, then maybe

39:14

a coaching star will emerge, but it's really

39:16

hard to find a fit for them. I

39:18

know it's very you know just Jay Wright

39:20

should still be their head coach you know

39:22

in my mind so it just feels strange

39:25

that he's not the head coach and Kyle

39:27

Neptune got put in a really tough spot

39:29

and obviously Neptune was on the staff from

39:31

Christian gets hit the shot and he was

39:33

a part of that whole run and that's

39:36

the part of that whole run and that's

39:38

the reason he has such a special place

39:40

and the Villanova kind of hive mind and

39:42

but you know it's tough one name that

39:45

I thought would be a producer Kyle's brain.

39:47

Richard Patino. If they would have to Richard

39:49

Patino and he was like all the way

39:51

sold and you had like Dan Hurley, Rick

39:53

Patino, Richard Patino at Villanova. I mean I

39:56

don't think Villanova fans would be stoked on

39:58

it just because of you know they probably

40:00

think of him from Minnesota days but he's

40:02

done a great job in New Mexico he

40:04

obviously gets the joke he's a really good

40:07

coach and he's been able to like siphon

40:09

the good of coaching philosophy out of his

40:11

dad without being jaded at the world you

40:13

know what I mean? Like he's he's kind

40:16

of a fun-loving version of like Kindle from

40:18

succession you know what I mean? If you

40:20

ever see Kyle Shane on the sideline, you're

40:22

like, I want to hug that man. It

40:24

just, just, just, just, his eyes are dark

40:27

underneath. Yeah, like, Richard Patito is not like

40:29

that. I actually had Richard Patino, I'd seat

40:31

and hall down because I don't know what's

40:33

going on up there. She, but Richard Patino,

40:35

I'd see him, but Richard and Rick in

40:38

the same area, recruiting, battling, that would be

40:40

amazing for me. But like, he's a good

40:42

coach like you said like just even the

40:44

Minnesota days like we see what Minnesota was

40:46

before him and what they become after and

40:49

that's a hard place to win and I

40:51

know they didn't win a lot but they

40:53

were competitive and there was always a hard

40:55

game when you went up to Minnesota and

40:58

he's brought that to New Mexico and they

41:00

have legitimate talent at New Mexico and you

41:02

can get legitimate talent to New Mexico that

41:04

usually you know is a good sign like

41:06

you've seen Steve Alford do it and go

41:09

on the UCLA and be a productive the

41:11

fact that he is a little bit of

41:13

a Nepo baby but with not the like

41:15

the baggage of being a Nepo baby I

41:17

think you can get on board with that

41:20

higher. Did you have you been watching the

41:22

potato doc did you see there was a

41:24

moment between him and Richard Rick and Richard

41:26

before their game against each other and Richard

41:29

Rick and Richard before their game against each

41:31

other and they're kind of sitting at the

41:33

starting at Point Guard for St. John's. And

41:35

I'm just like, in a conference, like these

41:37

two lying to each other and trying to

41:40

outdo each other would be a master class.

41:42

In college basketball, we all love father-son connections.

41:44

My dad loves college basketball, my dad loves

41:46

college basketball, it's like a connective tissue there,

41:48

something that we talk about and love. And

41:51

I feel like Richard and Rick would just

41:53

be the best show in town. So Villanova,

41:55

do it for the brand. Do it for

41:57

the brand. the New Mexico stuff on the

41:59

whole family is going for New Mexico at

42:02

MSG. It's just ridiculous. Yeah, it's such a,

42:04

yeah. I haven't watched the doc, but like

42:06

the the press conference, it's right Patino, since

42:08

he's been at St. John. Just the master

42:11

of the press conference, he wants to unalive

42:13

himself. He's branting about what a St. John's

42:15

man is, like bringing it back to the

42:17

actual St. John's who I didn't even know

42:19

was an actual person is an actual person.

42:22

Yeah, yeah, he's, he's, he's, We could get

42:24

some all-time press conferences from that guy. Yeah,

42:26

he's gonna be on one and we need

42:28

him to be because it's good for college

42:30

basketball and I am excited for this weekend

42:33

when he plays Yukon and MSG. That's gonna

42:35

be, it's a game he tried to move,

42:37

people forget this, because he was so mad

42:39

about all the Yukon fans there. I think

42:42

this time around there's gonna be like a

42:44

50-50 split and there's probably gonna be a.

42:46

I would say five and a half as

42:48

the line fights in the crowd between Huskies

42:50

fans and Johnny's fans and Rick Patino might

42:53

be leading the charge and Dan Hurley might

42:55

also be involved in at least one and

42:57

a half of those fights. It's going to

42:59

be great. So the big yeast is doing

43:01

well. We're just saying we can make it

43:04

a little bit better. So there you have

43:06

it. The hottest seat in the perfect matches.

43:08

I want to do an update on the

43:10

boo bloods. This is where we find the

43:12

blue bloods. We pick one that is getting

43:15

the booze this week. He's the good guy

43:17

of the week. Bill self. They got swept

43:19

by the state of Utah. Utah. Utah switched

43:21

everything. After both games, Billself was incredible in

43:24

his press conferences, saying the Salt Lake City

43:26

was one of his favorite places to play.

43:28

He made the joke that Magic and Johnson

43:30

were out there tonight, but he loves playing

43:32

in Salt Lake City. He loves the lighting

43:35

of the gym. He then goes to BIU,

43:37

says that his team needs to get away

43:39

from each other, but it's a great atmosphere.

43:41

I mean, he was just giving compliments everywhere

43:43

and how much he loves the cleanliness of

43:46

BIU in their arena and things like that.

43:48

nice stuff the entire time and he also

43:50

had mentioned that he did not like being

43:52

pre-season number one earlier in the season they're

43:55

kind of cursed by this every single time

43:57

Kansas is pre-season number one it goes off

43:59

the rails and this season might be the

44:01

farthest they've been off the rails so boo-blood

44:03

of the week Kansas and more particularly good

44:06

guy the week himself bill self your thoughts

44:08

on this run and kind of where Kansas

44:10

is right now yeah it's a tough team

44:12

to watch and you can kind of see

44:14

their I guess not progression, just how they've

44:17

kind of devolved from like two years ago

44:19

when they have like Jaylon Wilson and Grady

44:21

Dick on the wing. And that's really the

44:23

spot they haven't been able to fill. They

44:25

haven't had to fill the other spots because

44:28

they've had to fill the other spots because

44:30

they've had Dickinson for the last couple years.

44:32

They've had K.J.J. Adams, obviously, DeWann Harris. I'm

44:34

not scared of either of those two guys.

44:37

If anything you want those guys to shoot,

44:39

you're going to bait them into it. Yeah,

44:41

the one here is like that's like the

44:43

other team strategies to get him to shoot

44:45

the ball. And like it seems like the

44:48

best case scenario in every half court situation

44:50

is like a 12 foot push shot for

44:52

100 Dickinson with a guy on him. And

44:54

like that's usually the starting point for teams

44:56

is like we get our big guy open

44:59

at the top, then we run like a

45:01

handoff off of that and then we get

45:03

the team, the defense and rotation, the defense

45:05

and rotation. And for them like that's like

45:08

that's the defense and rotation. Like that's like

45:10

that's the defense and rotation. Like that's like

45:12

that's the, like, like, like, like, like, like,

45:14

like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like,

45:16

like, like, like, like, like, that's the, that's

45:19

the, like, that's the, like, that's the, like,

45:21

that's the, that's the, that's the, And we

45:23

haven't really seen them evolve beyond that. They

45:25

have no shooting. The transfers didn't work out

45:27

this year. Like Zeke Mayo has made some

45:30

shots, but he hasn't been very good on

45:32

the defensive end. You've seen. teams attack him.

45:34

Obviously like Coit store that that hasn't worked

45:36

out at all. Rhyland Griffin has made some

45:38

threes recently, but he's lost on the defensive

45:41

end. So I think it's just been it's

45:43

been tough in the transfer portal NIL era

45:45

for them, but I thought they just made

45:47

the wrong moves in the transfer portal this

45:50

year and that's really what's been killing them.

45:52

And I don't know what you do about

45:54

it when you don't have the talent to

45:56

kind of compete with the other team, especially

45:58

in the big 12. Billself just needs to

46:01

have a good off-season. One good off-season, I

46:03

think they're back on track and back to

46:05

where they were, but they haven't had a

46:07

good off-season two years. Yeah he famously said

46:09

last year after he got blown out by

46:12

Kentucky he said I think for the last

46:14

month I've been thinking about next season to

46:16

be honest and now he's in the middle

46:18

of next season and we're about three weeks

46:21

away from that moment where he's gonna probably

46:23

have a very similar quote AJ store is

46:25

the reason why they're in the predicament really

46:27

I mean they went after store they put

46:29

a lot into store being that guy he

46:32

has not been that guy if you watch

46:34

the BYU game there were some moments where

46:36

like you know they cut to the Kansas

46:38

bench and Bill self you know just looks

46:40

absolutely like he's just like I'm over like

46:43

I what else can I do you know

46:45

and he sat down in his post game

46:47

press conference and there were two microphones there

46:49

I don't know if you saw this and

46:51

like they're facing outwards and he kind of

46:54

sits there for a second he's looking at

46:56

both mics and he looks at his s

46:58

ID and he's like now I've made a

47:00

lot of bad calls tonight But are these

47:03

microphones right or do I need to turn

47:05

them around? You know, the whole media is

47:07

like, no, they're right, they're right. He was

47:09

like, well, there you go. That's my last

47:11

bad call of the night. You know, go

47:14

for it. Start asking questions. You know, so

47:16

like, he just feels like to me, you

47:18

know, he's like, it is what it is.

47:20

He's like, I've tried to change the starting

47:22

line up, it doesn't work. I've tried to

47:25

throw out different stuff. I've tried to, you

47:27

know, do this, try to do that. Nothing

47:29

is hitting. He was like, we just need

47:31

to get away from each other. So maybe

47:34

they do get away from each other. Maybe

47:36

Riley Griffin turns into the player we saw

47:38

last year at Alabama. Maybe AJ Store turns

47:40

into the player he was at Wisconsin and

47:42

they go on a stretch run. But right

47:45

now, it does not look like the season

47:47

can be salvaged. And now there is the

47:49

common denominator, the finger pointing the finger pointing

47:51

the finger pointing a started and a started

47:53

and a started and a lot of people

47:56

online or pointing a 100 Dickinson. Obviously, this

47:58

whole saga started with that 100 Dickinson video

48:00

where he's like, you know, looking at the

48:02

camera and be like, what's my next move,

48:04

you know, and then he walks in the

48:07

gym and daps up Bill self and all

48:09

that sort of stuff. And now Kansas fans

48:11

are blaming 100 Dickinson. We all have if

48:13

you've watched college basketball for the past five

48:16

years. I don't think it's necessarily his fault,

48:18

but it does feel like he's going to

48:20

get the blame for this. And do you

48:22

think that's fair. you know, for him to

48:24

go play. It's not fair, but I get

48:27

it because he's supposed to be the best

48:29

player on the team. He probably makes the

48:31

most money on the team outside of himself.

48:33

And what you just realize over the last

48:35

two years is he can't be the best

48:38

player on the team. He can't be the

48:40

best player on the team. He can't be

48:42

like the main score. When they had Jaylyn

48:44

Wilson and he was like a national player

48:47

of the year candidate, like if they would

48:49

have paired him. He'd be on the receiving

48:51

end, he can hit a pick and pop

48:53

three, he can finish off a move, but

48:55

like when you throw it into the post

48:58

to him, you're not expecting him to like

49:00

make a playoff of that. Like even like

49:02

a guy like Trey Kaufman read who's not,

49:04

doesn't have the profile of a Hunter Dickinson,

49:06

nobody thinks he's as good as Hunter Dickinson,

49:09

but like. When Purdue gives him the ball

49:11

in the post and teams double him, he

49:13

finds open three and they hit three's off

49:15

that and he creates offense, you don't really

49:17

get that with Hunter Dickinson. He's kind of

49:20

the ending point of the offense and I

49:22

think that's the problem. So I kind of

49:24

get it, but it's not his problem that

49:26

he's the best one there. Like maybe they

49:29

should have a better, a wing that can

49:31

score and maybe they were going after that

49:33

with the transfers and they didn't get it.

49:35

It's not his fault, he's the best player

49:37

on the team and it just doesn't work

49:40

in this era of college basketball. Yeah, and

49:42

Kansas fans in my life, you know, they

49:44

point to kind of their big three as

49:46

the issue and they point to K.J. Adams,

49:48

the Juan Harris, like those guys that have

49:51

been there in Dickinson. So they kind of

49:53

do the three get all lumped in together

49:55

and blamed them. But you know, at the

49:57

end of the day, they need someone to

50:00

score the basketball. Ziekma was supposed to be

50:02

that guy he obviously was last year when

50:04

he bumped up in competition we saw you

50:06

know we've seen that before I mean look

50:08

at Kay Tyson for God's sakes you know

50:11

what I mean a Carolina he can't even

50:13

get on the court you know so a

50:15

lot of times you you jump up a

50:17

level and as expected it doesn't go as

50:19

great but then sometimes you know look at

50:22

Drake these guys who played D2 and now

50:24

they come to D1 and they dominate which

50:26

is kind of funny because I had a

50:28

scout say that to me like five years

50:30

ago I asked about like the levels like

50:33

you know when you're kind of scouting guys

50:35

like a D3 guy because we were talking

50:37

about Duncan Robinson and he was like honestly

50:39

you'd be shocked at how close these guys

50:42

are you know He's like as far as

50:44

like playing the game of basketball. He's like

50:46

it's a lot closer than you think. And

50:48

it's funny to see this Drake team have

50:50

these guys from D2 bump up and be

50:53

this good. Same things happen at U.C. San

50:55

Diego. You know what I mean? Like they

50:57

went from D2. They got bumped up to

50:59

D1. They're going to be eligible for the

51:01

tournament this year, but they were playing D2

51:04

basketball. So those small differences they make a

51:06

difference to like like I'm talking about like

51:08

the three spot for Kansas like Jayla Wilson

51:10

was a national player the year then they

51:13

have McCuller the next year who was like.

51:15

Oh my, like 80% of what Wilson was,

51:17

but not quite as good. And he got

51:19

hurt, but he was their best player, right?

51:21

Yeah, and he got hurt and then just

51:24

totally fell off the rails last year. And

51:26

then they kind of take another step back

51:28

beyond that and they have the same pieces

51:30

around those guys, but you see that not

51:32

having that focal point on offense, especially on

51:35

the wing, it's just really hard to coach

51:37

basketball. I think like self has done a

51:39

decent job, like they're trying. when you don't

51:41

have it you just don't have the talent

51:43

I think that's the story of this team

51:46

right now and they'll be back though they'll

51:48

be back in a couple years yeah I'm

51:50

not panicking at for Kansas at large you

51:52

know what I mean like Kansas basketball at

51:55

large I'm not worried about it's more just

51:57

bill self and probably his frustration in this

51:59

new landscape and you won the national championship

52:01

in 2022 that's not that long ago so

52:03

you got some time to figure it out

52:06

last thing. Coach Calapary. I feel like he's

52:08

an honorable mention, Boo Blood, even though he's

52:10

not at a Blue Blood anymore himself, he

52:12

is kind of his own version of a

52:14

Blue Blood. Calapary University now, it is in

52:17

Fayetteville, Arkansas, as we know. After the loss,

52:19

number one, Auburn, which they did play well

52:21

in this game, he said, quote, that is

52:23

a final four game. Is this Calapary trying

52:26

to like put into our mind and set

52:28

the idea that he's playing in high-level games

52:30

still? Like what was that quote? Did you

52:32

agree that it looked like a final four

52:34

game? And your thoughts on Calipari in the

52:37

year 2025? It was definitely not a final

52:39

four game. That felt like maybe an IT

52:41

final four. Like I just felt like all.

52:43

It was an ugly game. I was like,

52:45

I did not take that as a final

52:48

four game. That was like, survive in advance

52:50

second round game at best. That was one

52:52

of those mid February games were like, oh

52:54

God, it's Wednesday or whatever day it was.

52:56

Like, we just got to get through this

52:59

game for Auburn. Like, I was really high

53:01

on them. I was like, I had a

53:03

couple drinks like in November. and I was

53:05

looking at my Fandel account and I was

53:08

looking at some futures and I put together

53:10

a little parlay of conference winners. Oh, there

53:12

you go. And I had totally forgotten that

53:14

Auburn existed and I just watched Arkansas play

53:16

like an early season game. I was like,

53:19

Boogie Flynn, Adieu from Tennessee. Like they got

53:21

some guys, John L. Davis. I was like,

53:23

they got a team. So I bet them

53:25

to win the SEC and then I was

53:27

like, oh wait, Auburn exists. And I watched

53:30

all of them play the next day. I

53:32

was like, that's a terrible bet. It's been

53:34

a terrible bet, obviously. But no, they have

53:36

talent. I just don't think. They should have

53:39

been that team. Like I said pre-season. I

53:41

thought Calipari was going to win coach of

53:43

the year. Like I thought Mark Pope was

53:45

kind of. Yeah, I thought he would come

53:47

out and like it would be like tough

53:50

athletically for them to match up in Kentucky

53:52

would have some growing pains, you know, and

53:54

I thought Cal was going to have this

53:56

sick roster that he put together with like

53:58

these freshmen and transfer portal national championship type

54:01

team and it has been the opposite, which

54:03

goes back to Kentucky fans saying, say you

54:05

can't coach. Yeah, yeah, I mean, there's a

54:07

part of it that I believe in that

54:09

I was one of those guys when he

54:12

was at when he was at. Phil Simmons,

54:14

that's all he says. Every time I mention

54:16

Calipary, he's like, he can't coach. That's like

54:18

a take from 15 years. He got Anthony

54:21

Davis, and then all of a sudden he

54:23

can coach. He turned him into the best

54:25

tournament coach ever. But no, like, they're just

54:27

missing something. Like, like. I guess it's a

54:29

wing player, like since they've lost play it,

54:32

I guess they just don't have that guy

54:34

that you just give the ball to. And

54:36

maybe it's made them better in certain respects,

54:38

having DJ Wagner more on the ball. And

54:40

then obviously Big Z, if he's hitting three,

54:43

they're a tournament team at the very least,

54:45

they're a tournament team at the very least,

54:47

not a final four team. But I think

54:49

he went there a tournament team at the

54:52

very least, not a final four team. I

54:54

mean, one of the worst, you play. Right.

54:56

And bad business. Yeah. Bad business. If like

54:58

that's what you're basing the success of your

55:00

team on, like Big Z hitting open threes,

55:03

then like, you're not a final four team.

55:05

You're probably, you're not a tournament team, probably.

55:07

And it's crazy because Big Z, the one

55:09

time he did hit a Big Three was

55:11

at Kentucky. You know, Ruparino. Of course, Kentucky

55:14

fans are like, you gotta be kidding me.

55:16

We must remember that one game, his first

55:18

game with Kentucky. That was incredible. I mean

55:20

you had people comparing him to Victor women

55:22

yama. Was he going to be the number

55:25

one pick? So it's crazy how quick things

55:27

change in the landscape of college basketball. Ruiz,

56:35

you need to talk to someone. Like a

56:38

good neighbor, State Farm is there. All

56:40

right, there you have it. Stephen Ruiz, the

56:42

Ringer.com, they got fans of college basketball. We

56:45

appreciate Ruiz coming on the show and he's

56:47

gonna be in the bullpen for us. We're

56:49

gonna use him as needed and especially through

56:51

March Madness because Kyle Man's a busy man.

56:53

He's doing NBA draft coverage for the Ringer

56:55

now, so we need guys. who loved the

56:57

game, who can watch the games, who are

56:59

locked in, and we need more in our

57:01

universe. So Ruiz, very happy to have him

57:04

on the show. That was a lot of

57:06

fun. And as you heard, he's locked in.

57:08

He's not just making this up. He's been

57:10

waiting to talk about college basketball. He's been

57:12

waiting to talk about college basketball. Crazy. For

57:14

two years, he said, for two years. He

57:16

said, for two years, he said, for two

57:18

years. You're a real trooper. We love to

57:20

see that. Let's talk about college basketball games

57:23

to watch this weekend. Kyle, before we came

57:25

on here, you were talking to me, you

57:27

broke this down into blocks of time because

57:29

you want people to know where they need

57:31

to be for the games to watch. Let's

57:33

start with Friday. There are two games I

57:35

have marked for Friday. They're going to be

57:37

Friday night. The first one is number 16

57:39

Marquat at Villanova. This is the chance for

57:42

Kyle Neptune to once again, get a signature

57:44

win. get you know Villanova fans to say

57:46

maybe maybe he is the right guy for

57:48

us maybe he is the guy so that's

57:50

gonna be a fun one but the the

57:52

showtime the big picture the one you got

57:54

to watch on Friday night Michigan State number

57:56

14 in the country going to travel to

57:59

Michigan number 12 in the country a showdown

58:01

in state Tom is oh Dusty May it's

58:03

gonna be a good one Kyle you will

58:05

be watching correct on Friday yeah and this

58:07

this works out because I think you can

58:09

get a little like apa teaser with Marquette

58:11

Villanova and I think we probably expect that

58:13

you know by the time because that's at

58:15

4 p.m. Pacific and then Michigan State starts

58:18

an hour later so by an hour in

58:20

you should be able to know if you

58:22

know what that game is yeah or or

58:24

you're just gonna have to figure out how

58:26

to toggle because we'll see Villanova obviously they

58:28

have one they've shocked hey they shocked Johnny

58:30

so who knows When you got, yeah, they

58:32

shocked the Johnny's, that was their signature win,

58:34

but it is, it is true, Kyle, when

58:37

you have YouTube TV, you can multi-view, so

58:39

you can watch both, or you got two

58:41

different streams. Or you're asking why we can't

58:43

do this one. I'm saying we can watch

58:45

both, if you need to, you can watch

58:47

both, like, you know, if you're a real

58:49

fan, okay. Steve Ruiz is gonna watch both,

58:51

that's for sure sure. Yeah, but like you

58:54

said, an appetizer game, you'll know where we're

58:56

at, and then we're gonna get a Friday

58:58

night showdown in the Big Ten, a game

59:00

that is gonna be very fun to watch

59:02

against two top 15 teams and two teams

59:04

that really do not like each other. And

59:06

Big Ten implications across the board, I'm excited

59:08

to see these fans engage with each other.

59:10

Michigan State obviously, they're like, we're the basketball

59:13

school, but Michigan is also. a basketball school

59:15

in their own right, but they don't admit

59:17

that they're a football school. So it's a

59:19

very fascinating, you know, back and forth between

59:21

these fan bases. Let's get to Saturday, and

59:23

it starts with the early window. Kyle, did

59:25

you have any games circled for the early

59:27

window? If you're going to wake up Saturday

59:29

morning and watch these games. So tell me

59:32

if I miss it, this is the nine

59:34

o'clock. We've got Tennessee at Texas A and

59:36

M at nine a. At the same time,

59:38

if. you want to toggle I think the

59:40

Oregon at Wisconsin which is interesting for a

59:42

couple of reasons I don't know what to

59:44

make of Oregon they do some cool stuff

59:46

and you know Wisconsin I guess is better

59:48

than I ever thought so Wisconsin is a

59:51

fun watch Wisconsin is probably gonna make the

59:53

second weekend pretty much guaranteed and John Tan

59:55

Jay is you know One of those guys

59:57

that, you know, if you haven't been following

59:59

college basketball, March manager, you're like, how have

1:00:01

I never heard of this guy? He just

1:00:03

dropped 38 points. That's how Wisconsin could score

1:00:05

the basketball. They're a fun team to watch.

1:00:08

Not your, not your dad's Wisconsin team. So,

1:00:10

yeah. And then at 10 a.m. an hour

1:00:12

into that, I put West Virginia at Texas

1:00:14

Tech. I don't, I look at Oregon, I

1:00:16

don't know when I'm looking at there, but

1:00:18

a Texas Tech's fun to watch. I have

1:00:20

fun to watch. I have them watch. I

1:00:22

have them watch. I have them watch. I

1:00:24

have them there. I have them there at

1:00:27

11. I have. I have. I have. That's

1:00:29

just, you know, number eight, big number five.

1:00:31

Yeah, top 10 tilt. We love that. Got

1:00:33

to watch that. That's at 11 a.m. I

1:00:35

think game days, I think game days at

1:00:37

Houston. That would make sense. And then at

1:00:39

1230 Pacific, you have Ole Miss at Vanderbilt.

1:00:41

Vandy is just, it's a wild card, right?

1:00:43

You have to watch now. Yeah. Thanks guys.

1:00:46

That's the Indiana ball. Mark Bu, versus Chris

1:00:48

Beard, winner gets the job. those

1:00:50

are the rules I didn't know those are

1:00:52

the rules yeah indiana ball and then I

1:00:54

have a little gap maybe there's something in

1:00:56

between there that you like there's so much

1:00:59

to stiff through I just don't want to

1:01:01

like you know flood the flood design I

1:01:03

know you said you said there are too

1:01:05

many games like people get flooded so we're

1:01:07

trying to highlight when you talk about the

1:01:10

Saturday sometimes it's just like we say like

1:01:12

20 names and I'm like how do I

1:01:14

know which three o'clock I have Kentucky at

1:01:16

Alabama Yes, that's the one. Yes, number 17

1:01:18

Kentucky at number four Alabama. This is going

1:01:21

to be a, you know, Kentucky's trying to

1:01:23

get healthy. Alabama's coming off that Mazoo loss.

1:01:25

I think this feels like an Alabama win,

1:01:27

but maybe Kentucky shocks the world and gets

1:01:29

a nice win there. I'm planning on just

1:01:32

watching this game because then at 5 p.m.

1:01:34

we have Duke at Illinois. and then we

1:01:36

have... This is an MSG, neutral psych game,

1:01:38

Duke Illinois, Illinois, they're hurt across the board,

1:01:40

Johnson Jr. just got hurt, I think he's

1:01:43

out for the year, or at least like,

1:01:45

you know, for a while, I believe it's

1:01:47

for the year. So Illinois, probably not going

1:01:49

to show up and win that game, but

1:01:51

you know, it'll be good for Cooper Flag.

1:01:54

It's okay because we have Missouri and Arkansas

1:01:56

at five at the same time. I'm highlighting

1:01:58

that as a letdown game because I have

1:02:00

given Mazoo so much love on this show

1:02:02

and usually that's how these things work unfortunately

1:02:04

every time you get too high. the you

1:02:07

know the world gets you back so i

1:02:09

would just mean it's a win for tires

1:02:11

so that works out either way yeah and

1:02:13

then i think i think i'm ending the

1:02:15

day with b y u at Arizona at

1:02:18

yeah you are yeah you are that's how

1:02:20

you end the day that's my Saturday was

1:02:22

there anything that you had that uh that

1:02:24

I skipped over. I'm sure I had Oregon,

1:02:26

Wisconsin in the early morning, but we mentioned

1:02:29

that when I had number 18 Clemson at

1:02:31

SMU, SMU needs like a win to be

1:02:33

like, okay, or at least not get blown

1:02:35

out. Every time SMU plays an actual good

1:02:37

team to get blown out, so Clemson at

1:02:40

SMU, that'll be a chance for SMU to

1:02:42

kind of be like, hey, we're actually okay.

1:02:44

George Mason at VCU was one that you

1:02:46

missed as well, and I know that's an

1:02:48

8-10 under the radar under the radar game.

1:02:51

but it will be a good game and

1:02:53

it will be a fun game and two

1:02:55

really good coaches that will be in the

1:02:57

coaching carousel potentially Tony Scanning George Mason and

1:02:59

Ryan Odom for the Virginia job so I

1:03:02

didn't even mention the Virginia job with the

1:03:04

perfect matches because I'm still upset that Tony

1:03:06

Ben's not the coach full disclosure there so

1:03:08

yeah Saturday full slate and then Sunday Kyle

1:03:10

near and dear to your heart it starts

1:03:13

with the best game ever Yukon at St.

1:03:15

John's in MSG. Are you watching this game

1:03:17

at frolic room? The people are asking. No,

1:03:19

no, no, I'll be home for this. We

1:03:21

got an early BS record and I just

1:03:23

can't chance it. Okay, good. Smart. I don't

1:03:26

know, it just feels like Hurley gets one

1:03:28

of these and I hate that. I hate

1:03:30

it. I hate it's the same feeling I

1:03:32

had at Yukon and I'm like, it has

1:03:34

to be right one time. I think they

1:03:37

flood the building with Huskies fans and I

1:03:39

think Huskies fans like as the haters have

1:03:41

come out you know shout out to Luke

1:03:43

Murray and shout out to you know the

1:03:45

Yukon staff that you know I have some

1:03:48

direct you know connection with I'm just like

1:03:50

I'm not a hater out here, but we

1:03:52

also have to talk about Dan Hurley because

1:03:54

he is hilarious in his own way. And

1:03:56

he obviously can be called in a DA,

1:03:59

a designated asshole, because that's what most everybody

1:04:01

is. That's a coach, you know what I

1:04:03

mean? In their own way. But Yukon had

1:04:05

St. John's potato versus Hurley. This is cinema.

1:04:07

This is what we came for. This is

1:04:10

the number one main character of last season

1:04:12

versus the number one main character of this

1:04:14

season in our universe. We might have flipped

1:04:16

the years up, you know, Hurley probably should

1:04:18

have been last year, Patino this year, but

1:04:21

regardless, there are number one main characters and

1:04:23

they're gonna go after it. It's just, it's

1:04:25

going too well. It's going too well. It's

1:04:27

like the device documentary. I'm biased. Obviously, I

1:04:29

think that's great. He's going viable for that

1:04:32

awesome. You know, everyone's just quote tweeting like,

1:04:34

I want to play for St. John's. It's

1:04:36

like, all right, you're 40. Settled down. But

1:04:38

like, everyone's just like, that inspired me. The

1:04:40

press is too good. And I just feel

1:04:42

like some has to happen, like on directly.

1:04:45

on Ryan Rissillo watching Rick Patino's documentary on

1:04:47

vice sports. While he's wearing a St. John's

1:04:49

Jersey no undershirt and just like sitting there

1:04:51

smiling, reacting to it. You know, everyone Shila

1:04:53

Buff did that. He like watched all of

1:04:56

his movies, but he has just like a

1:04:58

camera on him. I want that with Rissillo

1:05:00

watching the Patino rising doc. If there's anything

1:05:02

the ringer can do for me, please do

1:05:04

that because I think that would be gold.

1:05:07

It's perfect. I actually think the doc is

1:05:09

great. because Rick Patino can't like he can't

1:05:11

hide what it is you know and they're

1:05:13

in the building so they see it it's

1:05:15

it's been great so you're not biased Kyle

1:05:18

it's fine and that game's gonna be fun

1:05:20

so that's good at 1030 I put Purdue

1:05:22

at Indiana I think everyone would put that

1:05:24

on Sunday 1030 I put that on Sunday

1:05:26

1030 am I put Xavier at Seton Hall

1:05:29

I think I think just Xavier's a bubble

1:05:31

team in Seton Hall Dana they know they

1:05:33

do have a day Woos is a good

1:05:35

player is a day was a day. Yeah,

1:05:37

it's a it's 11 a.m. I don't know

1:05:40

what to say. I have Ohio State at

1:05:42

UCLA 1230, I don't know. Yeah, I guess.

1:05:44

If it's a slow Sunday. Ohio State, by

1:05:46

the way, just got blown out by our

1:05:48

Western. That was a very strange game. So

1:05:51

just flagging that for people that are, you

1:05:53

know, not keeping up with random big team

1:05:55

games on Thursday nights. I I did not

1:05:57

watch it. I watched the box score, I

1:05:59

will be honest. And then I watched the

1:06:01

key place this morning and I was like,

1:06:04

my God. Without barn hides score. It was

1:06:06

shocking. Chris Collins, shout out to you, big

1:06:08

win. And then I got USC at Rutgers

1:06:10

at 3 p.m. I think Rutgers, you just

1:06:12

got to see what they're bringing tonight. So

1:06:15

I'll check to see what those guys are

1:06:17

doing. I like that. I like the Sunday

1:06:19

slate. Yeah, Purdue number 13 at Indiana. This

1:06:21

is Mike Woodson's last stand. If you can

1:06:23

win this game, I think Indiana fans at

1:06:26

least leave with a good taste in their

1:06:28

mouth. They're like, hey, Mike Woodson, he did

1:06:30

some good stuff. He got us, you know,

1:06:32

back into relevancy, at some good stuff. He

1:06:34

got us, you know, back into relevancy at

1:06:37

some level. So, at least, he did some

1:06:39

good stuff, he got us, you know, you

1:06:41

know, you know, back into relevancy, back into

1:06:43

relevancy, he got us, he got us, you

1:06:45

know, back into relevancy, he got us, he's,

1:06:48

you know, back into relevancy, he's, he's, he's,

1:06:50

you know, he's, he's, he's, you know, he's,

1:06:52

he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, back into relev,

1:06:54

he's, he's, he's, But earlier, I got Arizona

1:06:56

State at Kansas State, Bobby Hurley versus Jerome

1:06:59

Tang. I just feel like something's gonna happen

1:07:01

in that game. I don't know what's gonna

1:07:03

happen. I just feel like something's gonna happen.

1:07:05

So just mark that one highlighted. And then

1:07:07

I got Georgetown at Creighton. I want to

1:07:09

be at Georgetown. I thought I was being

1:07:12

a hoe-up by putting that in there. That's

1:07:14

cool. Yeah. Shout out to Georgetown, shout out

1:07:16

to Creighton. Micapiev. Let's start doing some shout-outs.

1:07:18

I wanted to give him some love. Michael

1:07:20

Peavy has been playing some great basketball. This

1:07:23

is his last four games. 30 points, 21

1:07:25

points, 22 points, 27 points. This is obviously

1:07:27

all. Providence Butler, Seton Hall, Xavier, are all

1:07:29

big East games and Mike and Peavy is

1:07:31

a guy that they brought over and they

1:07:34

got two NBA players on Georgetown right now,

1:07:36

which is something that we have not seen

1:07:38

in quite some time. I know it's fun

1:07:40

to dunk on Ed Cooley. Again, Ed Cooley

1:07:42

said last year in that strange video directly

1:07:45

to the camera. I get the joke. He

1:07:47

gets it. And I don't like Doug on

1:07:49

Ed Cooley. I don't know. You don't like

1:07:51

it. Yeah, Providence fans don't like it. He's

1:07:53

a good character. He's a good character, but

1:07:56

he kind of feels like Ed Cooley, but

1:07:58

he kind of feels like Ed Cooley, but

1:08:00

he kind of feels like Ed Cooley, you

1:08:02

know we we keep it civil here but

1:08:04

we're like a good guy B-A-G guy but

1:08:07

it feels like cool he could drop that

1:08:09

g for D every once in a while

1:08:11

but who knows who's to say but again

1:08:13

the team is really good it's really fun

1:08:15

to watch. Peve has been playing some great

1:08:18

basketball. Wanted to give him some love. Shout

1:08:20

out to Joe Leonardi, bubble watch. This was

1:08:22

on Wednesday night. So obviously some things are

1:08:24

changing, shifting. But here's who Joe Leonardi had.

1:08:26

As far as his bubble watch. Again, the

1:08:28

bubble boys after the Super Bowl. I let

1:08:31

the bubble boys actually take up some of

1:08:33

my brain and take up some of my

1:08:35

thinking space. And the bubble watch is here.

1:08:37

Oklahoma, Arkansas, Wake Forest. There's no way Arkansas

1:08:39

is in, in my opinion. First four out,

1:08:42

V-C-U, Georgia, SMU, North Carolina. That is a

1:08:44

terrible bubble. I mean that is a that

1:08:46

I don't even know I mean I'm sure

1:08:48

there are other I mean you know there's

1:08:50

a ton of bracketologists I think when already

1:08:53

they said ranked was like 87th or something

1:08:55

ridiculous but that was the bubble watch on

1:08:57

Wednesday I would assume that wake far is

1:08:59

bumped up one level I would assume Nebraska

1:09:01

you know went down maybe two spots into

1:09:04

the last four in SMU is probably at

1:09:06

least last four buys or last four in

1:09:08

VCU should be in I think Georgia I

1:09:10

don't think so Carolina They're training in the

1:09:12

right direction, but as of now, based on

1:09:15

the quad record, no. So the bubble watch

1:09:17

is bad. The bubble is bad. As is

1:09:19

tradition, we spend time talking about these teams

1:09:21

that are just mid and not very good.

1:09:23

And we waste a lot of time and

1:09:26

resources talking about those teams that are just

1:09:28

mid and not very good. And we waste

1:09:30

a lot of time and resources talking about

1:09:32

those teams that are actually good. And that

1:09:34

is my problem with the BY Kansas game.

1:09:37

You don't. get it. Ritchie Saunders with the

1:09:39

headband on an incredible game. Did not miss

1:09:41

a shot. Bill himself said after the game

1:09:43

that he was expecting this guy to shoot

1:09:45

one for two. Every shot he took he

1:09:47

was like I'm pretty sure every shot he

1:09:50

made tonight that he looked at. So Ritchie

1:09:52

Saunders a great game. Shout out to BYU.

1:09:54

That was like their first national statement that

1:09:56

BYU basketball is a true new blood. They're

1:09:58

the bad guy. and they're getting after it

1:10:01

so a nice win for them over Kansas

1:10:03

and Bill Self will be fun. He'll get

1:10:05

some days away. Shout out to Jamie

1:10:07

Dixon, his six win and seven

1:10:09

meetings versus an AP top 10

1:10:12

team. So Jamie Dixon, T.C.U. get

1:10:14

a nice win, get a nice

1:10:16

moment and really good coach and

1:10:18

he's coaching in his alma mater

1:10:21

and I feel like Jamie Dixon

1:10:23

doesn't get discussed enough because of

1:10:25

the fact that he's at his

1:10:27

alma mater and the fact that

1:10:29

he's at his alma mater and

1:10:32

T.C.U. is not some powerhouse program.

1:10:34

I think he actually does. the

1:10:36

analytic stuff for St. John's, but

1:10:38

he, this is the cumulative margin

1:10:40

of defeat in each of these

1:10:42

teams losses. St. John's in their

1:10:45

four losses, the margin of defeat

1:10:47

all added up is just seven

1:10:49

points. So like, that's awesome. That

1:10:51

was great. Duke is the next closest

1:10:53

with 14, Houston also 14, Auburn at

1:10:55

15. So St. John's, based on margin

1:10:57

of loss, number one in the country.

1:10:59

So I wanted to give the Johnny

1:11:02

some love, wanted to give Fortin some

1:11:04

love for that note, because that is

1:11:06

a fascinating note. it's just that weird

1:11:08

style because they like you know they're

1:11:10

below 50% and everything right sometimes you're

1:11:12

closer to like 30 or in the

1:11:15

teens they can't make free throws but

1:11:17

they get to the free throw line

1:11:19

they can't make shots but they get

1:11:21

more shots but they get more shots

1:11:23

and then they force when you force

1:11:25

25 turnovers it's just it's always close

1:11:27

it's oh it's like it's just it's

1:11:29

a hard attack except for when we

1:11:31

played to Paul I guess so that's

1:11:34

why it's going to be a fun

1:11:36

run in the tournament. They don't let

1:11:38

you and that's what the Johnny's

1:11:40

do but again big big shout

1:11:42

out there shout out to r

1:11:44

j Davis he is now fourth

1:11:46

all-time ACC career scoring leaders hands

1:11:48

bro one redic to dick him

1:11:51

rj Davis four so shout out to

1:11:53

him moving up the list and he's

1:11:55

27 points away from dickey him rick

1:11:57

and he will you know get close

1:11:59

I don't think he can pass

1:12:01

JJ. Well, we'll see. We'll see

1:12:04

how many games they play, but

1:12:06

maybe he can pass JJ, but

1:12:08

right now, it looks like he'll

1:12:10

finish at number three all time

1:12:12

in the ACC. So RJ Davis,

1:12:15

shout out to you, North Carolina

1:12:17

basketball, looked like they were sort

1:12:19

of back in this game. I

1:12:21

like the starting line up. They're

1:12:23

getting bigger, they're getting bigger, they're

1:12:26

getting bigger, they're getting bigger, they're

1:12:28

getting bigger, they're getting bigger, they're

1:12:30

getting bigger, them he said we could

1:12:32

have a whole set of different players

1:12:34

disappointment now is with NIL it's what

1:12:37

you can provide financially and not the

1:12:39

education or the system so you know

1:12:41

Kevin Keats gets blown out and blends

1:12:43

NIL again ubiquitous term you can point

1:12:46

the finger at anybody And I love

1:12:48

to see it. Shout to Terrence Shannon

1:12:50

Jr. If you didn't see his jersey

1:12:53

got hung up backwards, or upside down,

1:12:55

sorry, excuse me, not backwards. I mean

1:12:57

it was upside down and backwards, I

1:12:59

guess. Going up to the rafters, they

1:13:02

did not fix it and they decided

1:13:04

to raise it anyway, which was odd.

1:13:06

But Terry Shannon Jr. has obviously

1:13:08

been through a lot, but he

1:13:10

has turned this into a funny

1:13:12

moment and now he is selling

1:13:14

t-shirts that say, when life has

1:13:16

you upside down, turn it around.

1:13:18

So, uh, Terry and Shannon Jr.,

1:13:21

good message there. I don't understand

1:13:23

why they didn't just take it

1:13:25

off and then re-hang it the

1:13:27

right way and then put it

1:13:29

up, but, uh, it turns into

1:13:31

a story. He flips it positively.

1:13:33

He flips it positively. was at

1:13:35

the San Diego State game and

1:13:37

apparently I just the reason I wanted

1:13:40

to shout him out is that apparently

1:13:42

his son is a manager and it's

1:13:44

managers week in college basketball so just

1:13:47

wanted to give a couple claps managers

1:13:49

hardest-working people in college basketball and the

1:13:51

fact that Guy Fieri's son is a

1:13:53

manager with the Aztecs and he was

1:13:56

at VA house arena cool moment so

1:13:58

shout out of Guy Fieri. guys

1:14:00

that we know is like a

1:14:02

well-known fan, right? This is, this

1:14:04

was a surprise to everyone. This

1:14:07

is a shock. This is like,

1:14:09

is that what I think it

1:14:11

is? Arizona guy or something, I

1:14:13

don't know. Yeah, I can see

1:14:15

Arizona, that's a good fit. Or

1:14:18

like, Wichita State or something, or

1:14:20

like Wichita State or something,

1:14:22

randomly, where it's like, what

1:14:24

the hell, Guy Fieri, he's

1:14:26

from, are you looking it up? Do

1:14:28

we know? Born in Columbus, Ohio.

1:14:31

Jesus. Sorry, I should have kept that

1:14:33

to myself. But that is like, when

1:14:35

you go to Columbus, it says like,

1:14:37

like the U.S. is highlighted and it

1:14:39

does feel like Nevada though, that's

1:14:42

where he went. That makes so much

1:14:44

sense. Reno, shout out to Javal

1:14:46

McGee. Yeah, Reno, Steve Offord. Man, they

1:14:48

gotta be upset about this. Guy Fieri didn't send his kid

1:14:50

to Reno, sent his kid to San Diego. But he was

1:14:52

at the game, his son is a manager, like I said,

1:14:54

shout out to him. Shout out to the little guy, Illinois

1:14:56

State's 5-11 guard, Johnny Kinsiger. He boxed out a seven-footer and

1:14:58

made a three in this one sequence, and also shout out

1:15:00

to the Illinois State, they won this game against Bradley. So

1:15:02

a big win for the little guy, and any time you

1:15:04

see a five, a guy, a guy, a guy, a guy,

1:15:06

a guy, a guy, a guy, a guy, a guy, a

1:15:08

guy, a guy, a guy, a guy, a guy, a guy,

1:15:10

a guy, a guy, a guy, a guy, a guy, a

1:15:12

guy, a guy, a guy, a guy, a, a, a, a,

1:15:14

a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a,

1:15:16

a, a seven footer and get the rebound pretty impressive

1:15:19

stuff so uh you know we talk about

1:15:21

a lot of guys on the show a lot

1:15:23

of the time we don't talk about the

1:15:25

little guy but i wanted to give the

1:15:27

little guy some love there uh... you know

1:15:29

v makes more sense now you and l

1:15:31

v how many more sense what are you

1:15:33

what makes more sense guy fieri with a u

1:15:35

n l v yeah graduate wow So I'm putting

1:15:37

a list together of like the number

1:15:39

one power player, like celebrity, like the

1:15:41

face of the franchise of like every

1:15:43

program in college basketball, you know, like

1:15:45

who's the face of the franchise. I

1:15:47

have Jimmy Kimmel obviously as UNLV. He

1:15:49

might have to take stuff. I've got

1:15:51

to be in the conversation. I'm going

1:15:53

to ask now. I'm like, would that

1:15:55

be offensive if we put guy fear?

1:15:58

I mean, I'm sure it is, but. He

1:16:00

would definitely like, I mean, he's

1:16:02

more mascot. I mean, I know

1:16:04

Jimmy's got a comedy club, but

1:16:07

doesn't guy have like two or

1:16:09

three restaurants in Vegas? I'm sure

1:16:11

he does. I'm sure he does.

1:16:13

And also like Jimmy's disavowed, it

1:16:15

feels like college basketball at some

1:16:18

level, you know? And it feels

1:16:20

like Guy Fieri has done the

1:16:22

opposite. He's at a freaking random

1:16:24

San Diego State game, celebrating night.

1:16:26

I do love that college basketball teams

1:16:29

still like have minor league promotional.

1:16:31

things that occur, you know what

1:16:33

I mean? So I love that.

1:16:35

Seinfeld Night, shout out to you

1:16:37

guys at FAU for making that

1:16:39

happen. Shout to LaSau coach Fran

1:16:41

Dumfie, he just announced he will

1:16:43

retire at the end of the

1:16:46

season. He will now become a

1:16:48

special assistant to LaSau's president with

1:16:50

the lifetime contracts with Fran Dumfie.

1:16:52

He finished his career 33 seasons

1:16:54

and more than 620 wins as

1:16:56

a big five head coach. So there

1:16:59

you go, Fran Dumfie, a legend. There's

1:17:01

so many stories about Fran Dumpy that

1:17:03

I've heard throughout the years and I

1:17:05

think we're gonna get someone that's an

1:17:07

expert especially like a Philly big five

1:17:09

guy to come on the show talk

1:17:12

about Dumpy maybe in the off-season maybe

1:17:14

we do a little Dumpy deep deep

1:17:16

dive because he's got some great stories

1:17:18

so I wanted to give him some

1:17:20

love. Yeah any shout-outs for you Kyle

1:17:22

anything else that we know you hit a

1:17:25

bunch of them today so you know the fire

1:17:27

alarm story and a couple of quotes there so

1:17:29

I really just have I just have

1:17:31

another Mick Cronin thing. Okay. That's

1:17:33

where we are at the quick

1:17:36

corner. This was, he's now, he's

1:17:38

now pivoted from saying bad things

1:17:40

to now saying, well, you have

1:17:42

to ask that, here's a quote,

1:17:45

this was after the Minnesota lost.

1:17:47

I think he was just asked

1:17:49

about something. By the way, Minnesota,

1:17:52

like someone told all those guys,

1:17:54

like, you only have two more

1:17:56

weeks of college basketball and they're

1:17:59

on fire. from what I remember, but

1:18:01

then Minnesota was incredible. So, you know, Mick,

1:18:03

I feel bad for you. First he blames

1:18:05

the crowd. I don't know which one of

1:18:07

these quotes went in, but he goes, I've

1:18:09

been doing this for a long time. I

1:18:11

know my team's mind is on the wrong

1:18:13

stuff. Our crowd's mind is on the wrong

1:18:16

stuff. They'll make it worse when a guy

1:18:18

misses on the wrong stuff. They'll make it

1:18:20

worse when a guy misses a free throw.

1:18:22

Everybody's worried about the wrong stuff. So that's

1:18:24

one. And then when asked about the... I

1:18:27

don't know what question this is in response to,

1:18:29

but Cronin says, you'll have to ask them that.

1:18:31

I feel like we didn't play well. If I

1:18:33

say anything, then I throw players under the bus.

1:18:35

We didn't play well. We were poorly coached. That's

1:18:37

why we don't play well. We were so poorly

1:18:39

coached that we didn't know that Dawson Garcia was

1:18:41

going to spin back on his left hand. We

1:18:43

had two guys on him. And we let him

1:18:45

lay it in. So I guess we didn't go

1:18:47

over that. I guess we didn't go over, don't

1:18:49

let him just stand there and shoot it. We

1:18:51

didn't go over, uh, converge on him like everyone

1:18:53

else in our league does. I guess we didn't

1:18:55

go over it. So it's all on me. If

1:18:57

you let the other team's leading score to

1:18:59

get their score get 32, you deserve to

1:19:01

lose. So another video. It's another's Cronin Zach.

1:19:03

I love that and I actually as you

1:19:05

were doing this I saw this press conference

1:19:07

he said he's not going to throw any

1:19:10

of the players under the bus and then

1:19:12

at the end he mentioned Dylan Andrews he's

1:19:14

like in the past two games he's one

1:19:16

for eight one for nine he's a good

1:19:18

kid but come on so he's guess

1:19:20

we just didn't go over that yeah

1:19:22

don't let the guy score all right

1:19:25

my fault my fault Cronin corner incredible

1:19:27

honestly like between Patino and Mc Cronin

1:19:29

and Mcronin and their post game press

1:19:31

conference rants like We're not sure who

1:19:33

wins. It's kind of a draw at

1:19:35

this point and I think I'm leaning

1:19:37

towards Cronin because like it's going worse,

1:19:40

you know? It's like it's better when

1:19:42

it's worse. Like Rick can be but

1:19:44

so mad at how good it's going

1:19:46

this year. So Mick Cronin, kudos to

1:19:48

you for making some things happen.

1:19:50

Any more quotes, anything else? Well,

1:19:52

whenever that day comes that Rick

1:19:55

says goodbye to the Johnny's, I

1:19:57

wonder if it's just slot him

1:19:59

right in there. with that viral speech

1:20:01

in case anyone has missed

1:20:03

the Rick's halftime speech. I

1:20:05

was hoping we could just put

1:20:07

that in. Let's see it up. Let's

1:20:10

hear Rick Patino get you fired up

1:20:12

and help you win a game in

1:20:14

the second half and we will see

1:20:16

you all on Monday and guess who's

1:20:19

on the show? John Rossing, we'll see

1:20:21

you then but now for now enjoy

1:20:23

this great clip of Rick

1:20:25

Patino. You guys keep blowing

1:20:28

opportunity upon opportunity upon

1:20:30

opportunity. You're like children

1:20:32

1:20:35

of thinking it would be tougher, you

1:20:37

will. Where is your fucking toughness?

1:20:39

Where have you guys been raised? That

1:20:41

1:20:43

1:20:45
