2:04

for all the good stuff you just mentioned, but

2:06

first what did you do? Welcome

2:23

back to one shining podcast. It is the

2:25

final day of February March is right around

2:28

the corner It's officially the best time of

2:30

the year and to help us break down

2:32

what's happening in the last week of college

2:34

basketball We've got our guy even bring it

2:36

back on the show even good to see

2:38

him and how you holding up as we

2:40

make the turn into March Yeah, I'm holding

2:43

holding up. Well enjoying the season quite a

2:45

bit. I feel like as we sort of

2:47

discussed in the past this is a a

2:49

season full of really good teams. I feel

2:51

like 1 through 20 is especially good this

2:53

year and it's been a lot of fun

2:55

and I can't wait to get into the

2:58

best time the year. Yeah, it's the best.

3:00

And it does feel like every year we

3:02

have like a seven to nine range of

3:04

teams that can win the national championship. But

3:06

this year, like you said, the window seems

3:08

larger where, you know, maybe there's a team

3:11

that is getting hot at the right time,

3:13

maybe in Arizona, right? That's on the fringes.

3:15

Maybe not in that top seven, nine range,

3:17

but you could talk yourself into teams like

3:19

BYU on the fringes, Maryland, right? Some teams

3:21

that not technically probably potentially going to win

3:23

the national championship, but fun to have the

3:26

conversation. There's a lot of good teams like

3:28

that. Before we get into the national player

3:30

of the year conversation, the wooden award. conversation,

3:32

the nascent, the war, whichever one you, you

3:34

subscribe to in this life. We're going to

3:36

talk about that. But before we get there,

3:39

I want to talk about this. Half of

3:41

the preseason AP top 10 is now unranked.

3:43

Obviously some big dogs in that group, Yukon,

3:45

Kansas, Gonzaga, Baylor, North Carolina. our

3:48

preseason rankings the least important they've ever been

3:50

in our lifetimes right I mean they're so

3:52

hard to prognosticate and the fact that we

3:54

get to this point yet again we had

3:56

the preseason number one North Carolina fiasco before

3:58

Kansas is kind of doing a redux of

4:00

that but the fact that we're at a

4:03

point where. We don't even know who's going

4:05

to be good. And then we do these

4:07

big like dumpings at the end the season,

4:09

like, look how far off we were. Can

4:12

we give some grace to the AP voters

4:14

a little bit because nobody knows anything now

4:16

going into these seasons? Yeah.

4:19

I mean, I think

4:21

it'd be interesting to

4:23

track over maybe since

4:25

2020, 2021. You

4:27

know, Ken Palmer, I had a, I

4:29

don't want to call it a landmark,

4:31

but a very interesting post. Um,

4:34

years and years ago now about how

4:36

actually the preseason polls pretty useful, uh,

4:38

because it's once you get into the

4:41

season, you know, a team loses a

4:43

game and people start doing the like,

4:45

well, uh, you know, Mississippi state

4:47

lost to Mississippi, so they can't be higher

4:50

than Mississippi in the poll. Even if I

4:52

think they're kind of better and you do

4:54

a lot of these like little, um, micro

4:56

calculations and the poll ends up. you know,

4:59

looking a little weird over time and becomes

5:01

very responsive to these to these weekly results.

5:03

Whereas in the beginning of the season, you

5:05

just kind of have like an unfiltered wisdom

5:08

of the crowd type of moment. And

5:11

it ends up being pretty predictive because

5:13

the teams that you generally think are

5:15

going to be top five, top 10

5:17

coming into the year are there that

5:22

I don't know, either way, we'd have to

5:24

maybe look at the numbers and do an

5:26

analysis of maybe like the last five, six

5:28

seasons in the sort of portal NIL era,

5:30

if it becomes a little bit more difficult.

5:33

You know, when you're in the off season

5:35

with some of these teams like Louisville, like

5:37

Illinois, where it's like 13 new guys on

5:39

the roster, everybody's a transfer or a freshman,

5:42

maybe that does lead to... bit less certainty

5:44

and a little bit less preseason understanding as

5:47

opposed to teams where you're like, okay, they've

5:49

had, you know, they've got this sophomore class

5:51

that's rising to juniors and they've all played

5:53

together for two years and we, we're pretty

5:55

confident they're going to be solid. Um,

5:57

that, that might, there might be something in that.

5:59

It's a much, it's much easier to forecast the

6:01

Marquette model where we know who these guys are.

6:04

We've seen like we expect cam Jones is going

6:06

to get more shots. So therefore he's the number

6:08

one guy chase her all steps up into a

6:10

newer right. It's easier to forecast that team. But

6:12

like you said, you have these other examples where

6:15

it's impossible. This was just the fourth time in

6:17

the last 55 years that half of the men's

6:19

college basketball preseason top 10 is unranked. Obviously Kansas

6:21

preseason number one. Is that the most shocking of

6:24

those five? I mean, Carolina obviously is shocking in

6:26

its own way. Gonzaga, a lot of people had

6:28

them as preseason myself included. I thought they could

6:30

win the national championship this year. Maybe still could.

6:33

Still in the fringes. UConn is obviously

6:35

shocking. They were preseason number three. We put them

6:37

at number one to make Dan Hurley happy. Um,

6:39

which, which one do you kind of stands out the most?

6:41

Is it Kansas? Just cause they were number one or is

6:43

at one of those other guys. I think

6:46

it's Kansas by a pretty fair margin. I

6:48

mean, look, I had high expectations for Yukon

6:50

coming into the year too, but you have

6:52

to acknowledge what they lost. And it was

6:54

just sort of a default. Ah, yeah. You

6:56

know, Dan Hurley will figure it out. Um,

6:58

you know, they got Liam McNeely late in

7:00

the recruiting calendar. Um, but

7:03

Mahaney was a big portal splash, right? Mahaney is supposed

7:05

to be a big portal splash. Turns out he just

7:07

can't play against big East defenders. Um, but,

7:10

uh, I think Kansas is the

7:12

big one because, you

7:14

know, talk about figuring it out. Like, Bill

7:17

Self, you think, okay, he's

7:21

got Hunter Dickinson, Harris,

7:24

he's got KJ, that's their core three. And

7:26

you know kind of what you're going to

7:28

get from them. And then you pick and

7:31

choose, you know, he was talking about late

7:33

last year, he was already thinking about the

7:35

roster. And so he goes out in the

7:37

portal and gets Mayo and AJ Store. And,

7:41

you know, Rylan, and you look at

7:43

the roster and you're like, okay, that

7:46

core three, whatever doubts you might have

7:48

about them, about Hunter Dickinson and Harris

7:50

and Adams being the, you know, the

7:53

core three, despite none of them being

7:55

able to shoot. You

7:57

just think Bill Self is going to pick and

7:59

choose on the margins, get them to where they

8:01

need to be from the perimeter, and you go

8:03

from there. And that's going to be a really,

8:06

really good team. And they've been good defensively, but.

8:08

But, you know, those doubts that I think I

8:10

had and I think that some people had in

8:12

the preseason, not that they weren't going to be

8:14

good, but that, uh, is this the number one

8:16

team in the country? Like, let's, let's pump the

8:19

brakes a little bit is because they are still

8:21

kind of functionally offensively where they were last year.

8:23

Um, and the transfers have been hit or miss

8:25

and their perimeter shooting is still non -existent. And

8:27

the spacing with those three key guys that self

8:29

feels like he needs to play because they're leaders,

8:32

they're veterans. They're all good defenders

8:34

and then Hunter Dickinson has gotten Flack for his

8:37

defense over the years But I think he's

8:39

become a really really good interior defender and disruptor

8:41

around the rim They're just not there offensively in

8:43

2025 in a sort of modern college basketball and

8:45

you look at the team He won the

8:47

national title with they didn't shoot a ton of

8:50

threes But they had a lot of guys on

8:52

the floor at any given time who could shoot

8:54

and make threes more than that was their

8:56

primary Way of scoring and they're just not there

8:58

this year. So I think Kansas is shocking, but

9:01

it's I think there were pre -season doubts,

9:03

at least in some quarters. And I wrote about

9:05

it a little bit of just like, look,

9:08

this isn't 2010 anymore. You do need guys

9:10

who can shoot. And if you're going to

9:12

have these three guys on the floor all

9:14

the time, particularly Adams and Dickinson, your

9:17

spacing could take a hit. And I think it

9:19

has all year. And it goes back to like

9:21

the continuity of those three and trying to fit

9:23

in guys, those three guys that they brought in

9:25

and basically saying, you fit with us. And I

9:27

think that was sort of the issue with this

9:29

team. And if you watch it at that kind

9:31

of level and you look at those three and

9:33

even Kansas fans, there's infighting in the Kansas brother

9:35

brotherhood, whatever you want to call it, family where

9:37

they're saying, you know, these three guys,

9:39

you know, they get preferential treatment from Bill Self

9:41

and like the Juan Harris, you know what I

9:44

mean? There's like infighting happening about those three guys,

9:46

which is also fascinating because you have new guys

9:48

filter. in, but they do look better. They look

9:50

better against Oklahoma State. Maybe something is clicking. They

9:52

obviously have the talent and you don't want to

9:54

face a Kansas team that gets hot at the

9:56

right time and maybe under seated and undervalued in

9:59

a tournament where they can make a run in

10:01

a region. So even though they aren't ranked right

10:03

now, you still have to watch out for the

10:05

J Hawks. Something that everybody is looking out for

10:07

right now. Who is going to win the wooden

10:09

award? And it has become very

10:12

fascinating. If you just look at the odds,

10:14

obviously we have Fandal implications here. We check

10:16

Fandal Cooper flag after the 42 points. game

10:18

where he answered, uh, the question of the

10:20

universe had 42 points and said, everybody, I'm

10:22

the best player in the ACC, maybe the

10:25

best freshman you've ever seen in ACC history.

10:27

Everyone was saying it's Cooper flag. Jenai Broom

10:29

goes out with the ankle injury. Auburn goes

10:31

three and Oh, while he's out. So there's

10:33

an argument to be made. Maybe he's not

10:36

that valuable. Right? That's what happens during that

10:38

timeframe. Jenai Broom then comes storming back has

10:40

like a 31 14 point or 14 rebound

10:42

effort that everyone's talking about. And they're just

10:44

like, okay, it's Jenai Broomstein. He's playing in

10:46

the best. potentially of all time. He's on

10:49

the best team in college basketball. They have

10:51

the most quad one wins, the most quad

10:53

one A wins every single time you go

10:55

through the actual resume of the sovereign team.

10:57

It leans towards deny broom, but even less,

11:00

we forget they did play each other. Duke

11:02

did win that game and Cooper flag, I

11:04

would say had the better game in that

11:06

output. Uh, even though, you know, deny broom

11:08

did play well. They both had a double

11:10

doubles in that game, both had 20 points.

11:13

So I mean, it's kind of apples and

11:15

oranges at this point. Uh, you could argue

11:17

either way, whichever you like, but. Your opinion

11:19

as you look at this race how fascinating

11:21

is it? And do you think it's already

11:24

one or do you think still think like

11:26

this last week? There are things that could

11:28

happen that could change the way that it

11:30

that it kind of Scales out in the

11:32

end. Yeah, I mean look I think it

11:34

could go either way and it's a relatively

11:37

rare scenario I would say where And this

11:39

maybe doesn't make for good podcasting, but like

11:41

if either guy wins or is anybody gonna

11:43

be upset really like deny broom beats Cooper

11:45

flag Cooper Fly will be the number one

11:48

pick. His life will be just fine, you

11:50

know, regardless. I think it's interesting that it's

11:52

a guy who started at Morehead State and

11:54

has been in college for the better part

11:56

of a decade. And on

11:59

the other side is, you know,

12:01

an early enrollee who's like the

12:03

prospect of the decade. And

12:05

he's obviously going to go pro next year,

12:07

despite Duke fans on the internet trying to

12:09

talk themselves into the small possibility that he

12:12

might come back. I

12:14

just I think I would

12:16

probably lean toward flag because I

12:18

do think it's a little bit

12:20

of a silly way to look

12:22

at it, but I think you

12:24

can take Broom out of Auburn

12:27

and the rest of the team

12:29

around him is so good and

12:31

veteran and dynamic that you would

12:33

get relatively what you're getting from

12:35

Auburn most nights. They wouldn't be

12:37

quite as good, clearly, but

12:39

they'd still be really, really good. I think...

12:42

is more central to Duke on both ends

12:44

of the floor that he then he's always

12:46

gotten credit for obviously He's obviously he's very

12:48

good offensively does a lot for them on

12:50

the offensive end But I think defensively and

12:53

this is not to say Broom doesn't have

12:55

this and his resume either But I think

12:57

defensively flag is way ahead of where anybody

12:59

thought he would be at this point in

13:01

his career and is a big big reason

13:04

Because he moves so well. He's so long

13:06

and he can guard basically anybody at the

13:08

college level you

13:10

know, you throw Malawak behind him and kind of

13:12

their length on the perimeter, they're

13:15

devastating defensively. And

13:17

I think Flag has had a huge part of that.

13:19

And I would probably just barely give him the nod.

13:21

But again, if either guy wins,

13:24

I might be writing some angry column about

13:26

how the other one got screwed over. I

13:28

think they're both extremely deserving. And I think

13:30

it speaks a little bit to where we

13:32

are in College Hoops, too, is we still

13:35

get these guys like Flag that can come

13:37

in and really special prospects and can come

13:39

in and dominate. And then

13:41

we also have these guys like Broom who are

13:43

in college forever and grow and develop and get

13:46

old and maximize their talent after starting as a

13:48

freshman at Moorhead State five years ago. I think

13:50

it's kind of the duality of prospects and where

13:52

the game is at. Yeah. It's the two languages

13:55

of college basketball. It is like, uh, there was

13:57

a time like when one and done came in,

13:59

right? It was the, wow, we went from having

14:01

these veteran players in college basketball to now we

14:03

have these guys who are here for nine months

14:06

and they leave us. And that was like the

14:08

either or conundrum of college basketball was the either

14:10

we have the three, four year guys who aren't

14:12

as talented or we have these superstar freaks that

14:15

come on campus for nine months. But now it

14:17

feels like both. And I feel like that is

14:19

what this race is demonstrating the most about college

14:21

basketball is that we live in the time of

14:23

both. And it used to be this argument of

14:26

like, I either want this or I want that.

14:28

And now we have both, and both of these

14:30

guys personify what it is. Like Cooper flag, generational

14:32

player, highest Kim Pom player of the year, ratings

14:35

since the site began tracking its data back in

14:37

2010, 2011. So Frank Kaminski, eat

14:39

your heart out. Cooper flag is beating you.

14:41

If you look at game MVPs and other

14:43

stats that Kim Pom keeps up, keeps up

14:45

with. Jenai Broom leads the country and Kim

14:48

Pom MVP. So like I said, you can

14:50

argue and kind of poke holes in whatever

14:52

argument you want. But both of these guys

14:54

have an argument to be made, and it

14:56

is fascinating. And the closest I could really

14:58

get to is like a Thomas Robinson, Anthony

15:00

Davis, right? Where it's like this great story

15:02

of a college basketball player who's persevered, who

15:05

had no P5 offers, who goes and wins

15:07

defensive player of the year, playing for Morehead

15:09

State, then ends up on the number one

15:11

team in the country at Auburn. Then you

15:13

have the Cooper Flag story where it's like

15:15

this guy comes out of nowhere in Maine

15:17

and now is going to be a generational

15:20

player for American basketball for the foreseeable future.

15:22

So the storylines are great. It's

15:24

good for college basketball that we have those

15:26

storylines, but I think it speaks to the

15:28

larger story of the game itself, which is

15:30

we have both now. And they should be

15:32

promoting both. And if I'm the wooden award,

15:35

the wooden was the first to give a

15:37

freshman the award with Kevin Durant back in

15:39

2007. Then they gave it to Anthony Davis.

15:41

Then they gave it to Zion Williamson. Cooper

15:43

Flag feels like the fourth perfect Mount Rushmore

15:45

of freshmen superstars to win that award. And

15:47

I do feel like he's going to win

15:49

the wooden award. I wouldn't be shocked if

15:51

Cooper won the wooden award. Jenai Broom won

15:54

the Naismith award. And then everybody goes home

15:56

happy and everybody can argue with their, you

15:58

know, whoever they want to about who should

16:00

have been. But I think that's where the

16:02

happy ending ends and do you would you

16:04

feel okay with that if we split the

16:06

awards because both guys could win based on

16:08

your argument? Yeah, I would be fine with

16:10

that and I think It would be deserving

16:13

in a lot of ways. I mean when

16:15

when is the last time we had a

16:17

player of the year? Race with two guys

16:19

who you're like, I don't know man. Both

16:21

of these guys are awesome I don't really

16:23

have a problem Adam Morrison JJ reddick like

16:25

what a year or two after Cooper flag

16:27

was born You know that That's

16:30

that's kind of where we are and

16:32

as was the case at that time

16:34

like You know Adam Morrison might have

16:36

been sort of the cult favorite But

16:38

it was extremely difficult given what JJ

16:40

Reddick was doing as a college player

16:42

to not give him the award either

16:44

So that's just kind of where we

16:46

are and I think again The sports

16:48

in a really strong place because you're

16:50

right. There was this unit, you know

16:52

go back to Duke's 2010 title with

16:54

Shire and Singler Brian Zubeck These veteran

16:57

guys who, you know, coach K builds

16:59

over time and that was sort of

17:01

the classic. You better say Nolan Smith.

17:03

They'll get upset. Nolan Smith also on

17:05

that team. A big part of that

17:07

team. We don't to overlook Nolan for

17:09

God's sake. And,

17:11

and if, you know, then you

17:14

look, you know, you know, Cal

17:17

goes to Kentucky, starts getting every

17:19

elite freshman in the country, building

17:21

these teams based on it, based out

17:24

of super freshmen coach K pretty quickly.

17:27

Pivots and follow suit gets

17:29

Jabari Parker, Julia Locke for

17:31

that 2015 team was entirely

17:34

freshman or almost entirely freshman.

17:37

And so all of a sudden there's this

17:39

conversation like you have to have three or

17:41

four of the top 20 freshmen in any

17:43

given class to be at the absolute elite

17:45

because you just need that talent in the

17:47

tournament. And things have shifted again. And

17:50

I think in the portal era, the

17:52

NIL era, there was this like Duke

17:55

kept recruiting these freshmen under Shire,

17:58

you know, in K's last season, last couple of

18:00

seasons, even though we're in the portal era. And

18:02

there was an argument to be like, no, you

18:05

actually need to be really old. You need to

18:07

get guys who've been in college for three, four,

18:09

now five years. Get old fast was what everyone

18:11

said. Every coach you talk to, we got to

18:13

get old fast, right? Yes. And so each off

18:15

season is an opportunity to bring in guys that

18:18

are 21, 22, 23, 24. And

18:20

that's how you have to win. And

18:22

I think where we're at now is

18:24

sort of an equilibrium where you can

18:26

be Auburn and have a guy who's

18:28

Luca Doncius aged on your roster and

18:31

Chad Baker -Mazzara. And

18:33

you can be Duke, where you're primarily freshman, but you've

18:35

got a couple guys that have been there for a

18:37

couple years, like Proctor, who give you a little bit

18:39

more veteran. And you

18:41

bring in Mason Gillis, who's like a

18:43

veteran mercenary, right? They kind of

18:46

check on and guys like that that have been

18:48

in. You can pepper in around the margin. So

18:50

there's multiple ways to build a team now, particularly

18:52

if you're Duke at the highest level. And I

18:54

think it's a good equilibrium that College basketball finds

18:56

itself in. I like it. I like where we

18:58

are. I like the race. I like the argument.

19:00

Uh, John Rossi, when he came on and started

19:02

talking about Janai Broom, I was basically flabbergasted and

19:04

floored in the moment. I didn't even know how

19:06

to respond because I'm waving the flag. I feel

19:08

like Cooper flag should be the player of the

19:10

year. I think, uh, if you take him off

19:12

Duke, they're not even in the conversation as a

19:14

one seat in my opinion. And that's why to

19:16

be, he's the most valuable. And that's no knock

19:18

on Janai Broom. That's no knock on what Auburn

19:20

has done this year. I feel like Bruce Pearl

19:22

should win coach of the year because of that

19:24

argument. And I think the Cooper flag should win

19:26

player of the year. So If all our burn

19:28

fans are going to get up in arms, I

19:30

want to give the credit to Bruce Pearl for

19:32

coaching in that conference. Um, and that'd be the

19:34

way to, you know, pay the, the homage to

19:36

how good they've been this year. But that's just,

19:38

you know, another, uh, you know,

19:40

conversation I'm sure we'll have down the road.

19:42

I want to talk about this case study

19:45

because the, we talked about the, the current

19:47

iteration of college basketball. I thought this game

19:49

was fascinating. Otega Owe goes back playing for

19:51

Kentucky. it was at Oklahoma last year. He

19:53

goes back with conference realignment. Now he is

19:56

in the same. conference as his old team,

19:58

I guess it really wouldn't have mattered either

20:00

way, but it lends itself to this moment

20:02

in time where Oway goes back to Oklahoma

20:05

where he played last year and he scores

20:07

21 of the last 23 points in this

20:09

game, including the game winner, which was basically

20:11

a no look over the shoulder, bacon layup,

20:13

followed by a great defensive possession on fears

20:16

where he gets partially a block and seals

20:18

the game for this team. There was a

20:20

lot of jubilation, a lot of celebration. Brandon

20:22

Garrison gets him fears his face after this.

20:24

to kind of a moment of mayhem afterwards

20:27

as we all saw, but the Otega O

20:29

-Way game and that kind of a reality

20:31

that we live in in college basketball, like

20:33

we're going to see more of these. I

20:36

feel like this is a blueprint of like

20:38

a guy leaves your school. Then

20:40

he goes to a team in conference and he

20:42

comes back and then destroys you in the most

20:44

visceral heart -breaking way, especially for a bubble team

20:46

like Oklahoma. Have you ever seen anything like this?

20:49

And Porter Moser was trying to grab away after

20:51

the game and like good game or whatever, but

20:53

I know that had to sting and I've never

20:55

seen anything quite like it. Yeah,

20:58

I just think, I think, um... They were

21:00

just so close to it, you know? Yeah,

21:02

we've seen it with coaches obviously, like Ed

21:04

Cooley. with the Georgetown Providence

21:07

stuff. And Chris Beard, when

21:09

he left Texas Tech to go to

21:11

Texas and was, you know, greeted upon

21:13

his return with just the most hateful

21:16

vitriolic atmosphere you'll ever see. Well,

21:18

I think there's nothing wrong with it

21:20

being with that extending to players too,

21:22

because we're in an era now where

21:25

players essentially have as much freedom of

21:27

movement as coaches do. And that's always

21:29

been kind of the argument of like,

21:31

let these guys go play where they

21:33

went, you know, 15

21:36

years ago when you've got like Wisconsin

21:38

blocking Jared Utah from transferring anywhere in

21:40

the big 10, you know, he can't

21:42

go to Iowa. He can't where he's

21:44

from. You know, we're putting all these

21:46

restrictions on where a guy could transfer.

21:49

Um, coaches really hate really, really hate

21:51

when they lose a guy to a

21:54

transfer and then have to play them

21:56

again. But in the era we're in

21:58

now, it's super common. It's, it's really

22:00

not like, I mean, You know Aiden

22:03

Holloway transferring from Auburn to Alabama like

22:05

it's It's remarked upon and you know

22:07

it but it's not like this. I

22:09

don't think it's seen I've never seen

22:12

someone rip your heart out there like

22:14

if I'm an Oklahoma fan and I

22:16

was pulling for Otega away last year

22:19

and then he just came into the

22:21

building and scored 21 of 23 while

22:23

wearing a Kentucky jersey and then was

22:25

basically dunking on my crowd with his

22:28

teammates. I just The whiplash,

22:30

I feel like is that an all time high,

22:32

you know, for fans, I feel like if you

22:34

are a true Oklahoma fan and you don't know

22:36

anything else except for being a sooner, you're a

22:39

good old sooner fan. And then that happens. And,

22:41

you know what I mean? Like, I just feel

22:43

like that 20 years ago, you showed that footage

22:45

to someone like you're like, here's the game from

22:48

last year. Here's your, here's the guys on your

22:50

team. And then here's him

22:52

next year. You know, their, their heads

22:54

would explode. And now we just like,

22:56

it happens on a random Wednesday night

22:59

and we all kind of go, wow,

23:01

what a game by Otega Owe without

23:03

really looking at the larger implications of

23:05

all that's involved there. And I just

23:07

thought it was such a spectacle. And

23:10

I just kept thinking about it. And I

23:12

was like, this is going to happen so

23:14

much more that we're going to get null

23:16

to this or we're going to get the

23:18

numb to the all of the reality that

23:20

we live in. An incredible game all around

23:22

for Otega away and Oklahoma fans. I felt

23:25

for you there in that moment So poor

23:27

one out Brandon Garrison had a beer can

23:29

thrown at him. So obviously there were some

23:31

frustrations there. It seems like Everything's getting solved

23:33

on the back end and nobody was hurt.

23:35

Thankfully. So, uh, just a, a fascinating college

23:37

basketball game and experience overall, and definitely does

23:39

not happen without the new landscape that we

23:42

live in. I want to talk about this

23:44

as a fun game for you even start

23:46

binge cut Maryland edition. They've had three buzzer

23:48

beaters happen to them in their last three

23:50

losses. And I wanted to see start binge

23:52

cut, which one would be the worst to

23:54

deal with and the easiest to deal with,

23:56

uh, in your opinion, we got Bruce Thornton's

23:58

bank in three. We got Trey Holloman's half

24:01

court heave. And we got, Martinelli's game winner

24:03

and overtime on the baseline start bench cut

24:05

those three if you're Maryland Which one hurt

24:07

the most and which one hurt the least

24:09

in your opinion? I mean that Michigan State

24:11

one has to hurt the most I think

24:13

so that hurt me watching and I'm not

24:15

even a Maryland fan That's that is that

24:18

is I mean especially on your own on

24:20

your home floor Just the the sounds of

24:22

the shrieks of horror and terror that went

24:24

through that gym when that when that went

24:26

through We're pretty

24:28

incredible. I mean, you

24:30

know, look, I think Maryland will look

24:32

at that game and Kevin Willard will come away looking

24:34

at that game and think That's

24:37

an awful way to lose, but they probably

24:39

deserve to lose. They were really Uncharacteristically they

24:42

deserve to make the shot. I thought that

24:44

was immediately afterwards. He was like, we deserve

24:46

to make that shot. No luck. He's like,

24:48

look, that's a lucky shot, but we deserve

24:50

to win the game. You can't tell me

24:52

we didn't deserve to win the game, which

24:55

is fair enough. I mean, they let pretty

24:57

much the whole way through. That's they were

24:59

bad offensively to Michigan State was but But

25:01

but not as bad as Marilyn. I think

25:03

they'll they'll come away from that being like

25:05

look If we hold a team

25:08

as good as Michigan State to you know,

25:10

58 points and 69 possessions we in our

25:12

own gym We need to be winning and

25:14

not leave it to to a half -court

25:16

heave at the buzzer. So that's probably the

25:18

most painful one but You know, I feel

25:20

like I've said this all year like and

25:22

this is another little just the existence of

25:24

this game is another little reminder of like

25:27

Maryland's really good. I think Maryland is really

25:29

good and the fact that that this is

25:31

how they're losing, you know, they, they don't

25:33

have nights where I think this is good

25:35

for March, right? Like this, this is like

25:37

what you want. Like all of these buzzer

25:39

beaters, disaster endings, like have them in the

25:41

regular season and then go on a run

25:43

in March, you know, that's what I would

25:45

tell my team. I'm like, all this stuff,

25:48

we're getting it out of our system right

25:50

now. So we don't have to deal with

25:52

it in the second round. Yeah. And I

25:54

mean, you look at teams like around them

25:56

in like, let's just say the Ken Palm

25:58

rankings, like Purdue just got run at Indiana,

26:00

you know, um, Arizona's

26:03

had bad games. Iowa State's had bad

26:05

games. Like Kentucky has had off nights

26:07

here or there. All of Maryland's losses

26:10

are single digit losses. Florida Marquette, five

26:12

to Purdue, six

26:14

at Washington, four at Oregon. OT,

26:18

buzzer beater Northwestern, buzzer beater at Ohio

26:20

State. And then the Michigan State shot

26:22

the other night from, from beyond half

26:24

court. If this is how you're losing

26:26

games and you're not having a night.

26:28

Even just once or twice in a

26:30

season where you're like, wow, we really

26:32

didn't have it tonight and we got

26:34

drubbed and we just have to pretend

26:36

like this game never happened. Okay, we

26:38

lost by 17. Move on to the

26:40

next one. Maryland doesn't do that. I

26:42

really like this Maryland team and just

26:44

the nature of their losses even in

26:46

the games they have lost. You

26:49

know, they could be four or five wins better than they are

26:51

right now based on a couple of bounces here or there throughout

26:53

the year. And then you're looking at a team that's like, is

26:55

this the number one seed? And in all

26:57

those games, it did feel like early on when they

27:00

started traveling in the big 10, especially when they went

27:02

to the West Coast to Washington, Oregon, they still hadn't

27:04

figured out how to win. And they still feel like

27:06

they had this sort of in the back of their

27:08

minds, are we sure we're supposed to be good? Are

27:11

we sure? Are we sure we're supposed to win these

27:13

games? And then something clicked during that kind of big

27:15

10 road schedule. And now they expect to win. I

27:17

feel like this game, that was a bad shot by

27:20

Gillespie. It was about five seconds on the shot clock.

27:22

He pulls up from 30 feet, basically starts the break

27:24

for Holloman. And it was eerie. It was similar to

27:26

the Cassius. Winston shot that he had hit to and

27:28

he's also wearing number five. So I mean, I know

27:31

Maryland fans were just like, I feel like a ghost

27:33

from the past. And that was a top 10 win

27:35

potential for them. So there was a lot of energy

27:37

in that building. I felt for them, SVP was going

27:40

crazy. But yeah, Maryland fans, there were

27:42

some great, I mean, the fact that those are the

27:44

endings that they've had in their last three losses is

27:46

insane. So I mean, they could

27:48

easily won all three of those games. And then

27:50

you're looking at a team that has a loss

27:53

since January 5th and is, and is what? 14

27:55

and 3 in the big 10 or whatever. So

27:57

yeah, it's it's something to keep in mind as

27:59

you're looking at teams in the tournament And kind

28:01

of figuring out how good you think they are

28:04

dig in past the record a little bit and

28:06

look at how those games were actually actually lost

28:08

because you're essentially looking at coin flips and That's

28:10

the kind of thing that you can't really control

28:13

for but the underlying stuff with Maryland I think

28:15

is really really strong And the post game that

28:17

I watched, it felt like, uh, you know, Gillespie

28:19

obviously felt like he was like, I, you know,

28:21

I, I, I take some onus on this. Uh,

28:24

Kevin will, I feel like they learned something from

28:26

this experience too, where it's just like that wasn't

28:28

in our mind, something that could have even happened.

28:30

And then it did. And now we know it's

28:33

possible. So we're going to be even more, you

28:35

know, careful at the end of these games. And

28:37

I mean, like it's a bad shot stepping away

28:39

there and you don't need it because the game's

28:42

tied. Like you can get, if you can get

28:44

to the room with that extra second or two

28:46

at the same time. you

28:48

know, you leave you leave a little time

28:51

for a potential offensive rebound and Michigan State

28:53

didn't have enough time to get the ball

28:55

before they just had to chuck it and

28:57

95 98 times out of a hundred that

28:59

that shot doesn't even hit the rim. So

29:02

It's a little unlucky. Although, you know, you

29:04

can manage it a little bit better and

29:06

I think He sort of settled for the

29:08

hero shot as opposed to like can I

29:10

get into the middle of the floor? Get

29:13

a floater kick it Get us something a

29:15

little bit more open, but it's tempting man.

29:17

You got the ball in your hands at

29:19

home last couple seconds of the game I

29:21

would be tempted to throw up a step

29:23

back three there, too Yeah,

29:26

I just feel like that's human nature at some level.

29:28

He saw it. It was wide open and he was

29:30

like, I'm going to be the hero. I'm going to

29:32

bury this. Yeah. I'm going to bury this. Like, uh,

29:34

Burnett did for Michigan, right? I mean, he hit that

29:36

three right at the end of the game and it's

29:38

like game over. I'll see you guys later. So that's

29:41

what he saw. And, uh, I think he'll be better

29:43

for it next time. Give the ball to Derek Queen.

29:45

Maybe he's standing right there wide open at the top

29:47

of the key. I feel like he's the right guy

29:49

to have the ball in his hands. Uh, most interesting

29:51

final week stories. There's a lot of them out there.

29:53

Tom Izzo going for his 11th big 10 title, Rick

29:55

Petino going for his first non -shared. you know, title

29:58

there at St. John's in the big East. We got

30:00

Mike Woodson's farewell tour. Some people are saying shades of

30:02

Dan Monson. We'll see about that. Dusty

30:04

May, the odds are ever in his favor. They

30:06

continue to win, win games that are very close.

30:08

Carolina's last hope to see if they can beat

30:10

Duke. What are you out of all of these

30:12

stories going to the last week? Like which one

30:14

are you kind of locked in on? Is it

30:16

Tom Izzo? Is it something else on the outside

30:18

that I haven't, I didn't bring up yet. Yeah,

30:20

I mean, I think it's going to be really

30:22

interesting to see how the rest of Indiana season

30:24

plays out. Obviously, they

30:27

announced Woodson's departure just before that

30:29

February 8th game against Michigan at

30:31

home. Michigan's a good team. They

30:33

lost by a bucket. Go to

30:36

Michigan State win. Real

30:38

close game against, again, a good UCLA team

30:41

at home. They could have potentially won that

30:43

game. Then have just

30:45

the craziest, dumbest game

30:47

against Purdue. Uh, down huge

30:50

at the half. I think it was, they gave

30:52

up a 21 to four run just before the

30:54

half and then had a 28 to three run

30:56

immediately after the half, one by 15. Um,

30:59

and then really needed to hold on the other night against

31:01

Penn State. And so

31:03

Trey Galloway. Galloway was

31:05

good. Um, you know,

31:07

they, Malik Renew was, I think was

31:09

sick. So they missed him, but

31:12

Neaterhouser for Penn State like tore up Umar

31:14

Balo for a lot of that game. Um,

31:17

And Bala was still good on

31:19

the offensive end and rebounded as

31:21

he usually does. But yeah, I'm

31:23

interested in sort of the emotional

31:25

side of Indiana. Because I think

31:27

for as many struggles as they've

31:29

had and as off it as

31:32

they've looked at various points throughout

31:34

the season, I think those

31:36

players really like Woodson. Like, I don't think

31:38

that's the problem. Like, I don't think the

31:40

players like quit. Like, where you look at

31:42

Kansas, and they had that BYU game, and

31:44

Bill Self is talking about it afterwards, like.

31:46

Everybody just needs to get away from each

31:48

other. I thought it turns out we all

31:50

hate each other and everyone just needs some

31:52

personal space So I don't think that's a

31:54

thing with Indiana I think they just haven't

31:56

gotten the most out of their talent and

31:58

I think you know There's there's an additional

32:00

layer now of like let's win some for

32:02

Woodson on his way out that I think

32:04

Could could give them just a little bit

32:06

more of an edge down the season as

32:09

opposed to If

32:11

it was just understood that Woodson was going to leave,

32:13

but they hadn't actually fired him yet. And

32:15

they were just kind of going along in the

32:17

normal, the way they had been for most of

32:19

the year. I don't think you'd have maybe quite as

32:21

much edge or emotion to, for example, the game

32:23

against Purdue where you can see the team was like,

32:26

all right, we may not add half time.

32:28

Like, all right, we may not win this

32:31

game, but we cannot come out in the

32:33

second half and just get blown out. Like

32:35

we have to do something here. Let me

32:38

ask you this. If Mike Woodson goes on

32:40

a Hubert Davis 2022 run or a Mike

32:42

Davis 2002 run to the final four, do

32:44

we have a Wolf of Wall Street moment

32:47

where Mike Woodson is like, I'm not going

32:49

anywhere. I'm coming back. And the Indiana fans

32:51

are like, wait a second. Hold on a

32:53

second. Like, like NC State last year. Yeah,

32:56

right. They're like, Kevin Kees has continued employment

32:58

is like, wait, hold on a second. That's,

33:01

that's, that's what I feel like if it does

33:03

get to the point where like they really rally

33:05

bond, cause it does feel like it's very cathartic.

33:07

When they beat Purdue, I watched that game. I

33:09

mean, it was cathartic when they won that game.

33:11

You saw all the players celebrating with the woods

33:13

and after the game, it is good vibes, right?

33:16

It feels like there is good energy going. So,

33:18

and they have the talent there in the building

33:20

and Bala was a tough matchup for most anybody

33:22

in the country. So there is a path. And

33:24

I just, to me, I was like, I closed

33:26

my eyes and I was like, if Mike Woodson

33:28

makes a run to San Antonio, like what does

33:30

that look like for, you fans because they're gonna

33:32

like, I feel for everybody. That would honestly might

33:34

be the worst case scenario. So I remember when

33:36

they announced that I wrote, just

33:39

jotted some thoughts down from my

33:41

sub stack. And one of them

33:43

was this is actually good as

33:45

opposed to straight firing him right

33:47

now and having an interim finish

33:49

this season because then you risk

33:51

the. New coaching bump interim

33:54

coach takes these guys deep in the

33:56

tournament and you're pressured to hire that

33:58

guy Exactly and fans get on board

34:00

So avoiding that situation to be like

34:02

Mike's gonna finish the year. We're gonna

34:04

have a national coaching search in February

34:07

and March. It's already begun. No doubt

34:09

Felt like the better solution but what

34:11

happens if your current coach becomes the

34:13

interim coach who then takes your team

34:15

on a big run You do also

34:18

risk the possibility that there's like, well,

34:20

we'll give Mike another year. He finished

34:22

the season strong. I don't think that's

34:24

going to happen. I think everyone's kind

34:26

of set on it. And now it's

34:29

just kind of seeing it out, trying

34:31

to leave everybody with a decent taste

34:33

in their mouth. Because I think that's

34:35

the thing about Mike Woodson is because

34:37

of who he is and his history

34:39

with the program, once

34:42

you get past, like once the decision is made and

34:44

fans don't feel like they have to scream at the

34:46

top of their lungs to the athletic department of like,

34:48

we need to change coaches. Now that

34:50

it's been done everyone can kind of be like

34:52

oh, yeah, Mike Woodson like we like that guy

34:54

like right so it's night it The ideal is

34:56

finishing the season strong and letting everybody kind of

34:59

go like, hey, you know, he wasn't quite up

35:01

to the job, but he did his best and

35:03

off we go. And he

35:05

brought, he did exactly what basically I

35:07

think the old IU heads wanted, right?

35:09

He brought Bob Knight back. I mean,

35:11

hell froze over. He brought him back

35:13

into the building. He got him back

35:15

into the fold. He kind of closed

35:17

that book, I feel like, and left

35:19

it on like a nice note on

35:21

the, a nice addendum at the end,

35:23

which is like Bob Knight came back.

35:25

Everybody celebrated him IU fans are happy,

35:27

but now we can like now that

35:29

that's done we can turn the page

35:31

the next chapter and see what that

35:33

looks like you can set aside like

35:35

20 years of weird sort of trauma

35:37

for IU fans and and like Feeling

35:39

like your programs adrift and cut off

35:41

from its past and all that stuff

35:43

in theory that should all be behind

35:45

the program now and now you go

35:48

out and hire the best possible coach

35:50

you can find and Try to build

35:52

like a modern intelligently

35:54

run program that doesn't need

35:56

to, you know, account for

35:58

like the emotions of what

36:01

happened in 2000. You

36:03

know, I think that's kind of where Indiana needs

36:05

to get to is like, just bring the best

36:07

coach in. Indiana ties don't

36:09

really matter. Clearly, it didn't

36:12

help Woodson that much, right? Like

36:14

people still got super fed up

36:16

with mediocre a couple of mediocre

36:18

seasons. Um, probably understandably so because

36:20

with the talent on the roster and the

36:23

resources Indiana has, they should be, they should

36:25

be better than they are. So, uh, we'll

36:27

see how it goes. Yeah. Tom Coverdell is

36:29

not going to be the next head coach

36:31

in Indiana as far as we know. Uh,

36:34

last six in right now, Arkansas, Nebraska, Georgia,

36:36

Indiana, Oklahoma, Ohio state, first six outright now,

36:38

North Carolina, Boise State, Xavier, Wake Forest, SMU,

36:40

Texas. Uh, So there's 12 teams

36:42

right there that are on the border. Indiana is

36:45

on the good side of things. They are in

36:47

the tournament as it currently stands. Obviously a lot

36:49

to figure out. Uh, going to be a lot

36:51

of fun games this weekend. Even we appreciate you

36:53

coming on the show is always trying to make

36:55

sense of what's happening in college basketball. Good luck

36:57

to you as the counter calendar turns to March.

36:59

And we'll be talking to you as March madness

37:01

comes around and we'll have you back to break

37:03

down now. Hopefully, uh, some answers to all of

37:06

our many questions about what's going to happen down

37:08

the stretch front of the season. Thanks again, man.

38:49

Before Bucknakeet underwear, going

38:51

out naked was a negative.

38:54

Grocery shopping in the mood?

38:56

A big no no. Sunday

38:58

service in the buff? A

39:01

disservice. And make it in

39:03

the garage? Just odd. Turn

39:06

naked into a net positive

39:08

with Bucknakeet underwear and

39:10

feel like wearing nothing

39:13

at all. Anywhere. Get

39:16

Bucknakeet at your Duluth

39:18

trading store. There you have it. Even

39:20

Britain. He's the best. We love having him on

39:22

the show. We got some shout outs to get

39:24

to before we get the shout outs. Let's do

39:26

some games to watch again. This is Friday, February

39:28

28th. This is the last day in February. Correct,

39:30

Kyle. This is not a leap year. We do

39:33

not have extra days. This is the last day.

39:35

My calendar ends at 28. I just looked

39:38

at it. All right. I'm just checking. I

39:40

have a friend of mine that was born

39:42

on the leap year and he like, you

39:44

know, would turn like, you know, every four

39:46

years you'd have a birthday. And I always

39:48

thought that was fascinating, but uh, this year,

39:50

not a leap year. Shout out to everybody

39:52

that is born in a leap year tomorrow.

39:54

You know, shut up to rent. Pay your

39:56

rent, everybody. You got to the third. If

39:58

you need some more time, hopefully you get

40:01

paid tomorrow or today on a Friday. Games

40:03

to watch. Let's do it Friday night after

40:05

you get paid. Go and watch this game.

40:07

The wooden game, John Wooden, that's right. UCLA

40:09

at Purdue. John Wooden famously played at Purdue.

40:11

There's a statue of John Wooden there. John

40:13

Wooden famously coached and won 11 national championships

40:15

at UCLA. There's a statue, obviously,

40:17

of Paulie Pavilion. This is the battle for John

40:19

Wooden, and it is happening in conference. This is

40:22

what it's supposed to be. is what John Wooden

40:24

dreamed of Friday night UCLA at Purdue. Watch that

40:26

game Purdue was reeling UCLA is training in the

40:28

right direction I kind of like hep cronin and

40:31

mic cronin in this game at Purdue at Mackie

40:33

But you know Mackie magic always works. So it

40:35

should be a fun game. Watch that one on

40:37

Friday night That's the only one we have circled

40:40

for tonight Saturday There is a full

40:42

slate on Saturday, as there always typically is, but

40:44

it's going to start with the number one team

40:46

in the country. Auburn at number 17, Kentucky. Auburn

40:49

trying to win in Lexington. This is something that

40:51

they've been looking forward to. Bruce Pearl said he

40:53

needs to have it on his resume. 1pm

40:55

on ABC. Kyle,

40:58

did you hear that? On ABC Network TV,

41:00

number one, Auburn at number 17, Kentucky. Good

41:03

times. I love to see it. ABC shout

41:05

out to you guys. Number 10, Texas Tech

41:07

at Kansas. That game is at 2pm. This

41:09

is all Eastern Standard Time. We're on the

41:11

West coast as I've mentioned multiple times, but

41:13

we'd like to keep you up to date

41:15

on these coasts 2 p .m. Eastern ESPN

41:17

number 10 Texas Tech at Kansas can't can

41:19

Kansas get right and get a win to

41:21

get Texas Tech That'll be fun to watch

41:23

we get Oklahoma at Ole Miss This is

41:25

a battle of the bubble boys 2 p

41:27

.m. ESPN 2 Seton Hall at number 7

41:30

st. John's 2 15 on CBS Rick Petito

41:32

is on network television folks You have to

41:34

watch this game 2 15 Seton Hall Shaheen

41:36

Holloway take it on number 7 st. John's

41:38

and this is for the biggie. So, uh,

41:40

you got to watch that one. That's the

41:42

number one circle highlighted red line, whatever you

41:44

want to say, you got to watch that

41:46

game. Number six, Alabama at number five, Tennessee.

41:48

This is four PM on ESPN. So this

41:50

is right as the Seton Hall, St. John's

41:52

game is winding down as you have watched

41:54

Rick Petino kind of sell into the sunset

41:56

of this great regular season. You head over

41:58

to a top 10 tilt between these two

42:00

teams on ESPN. Should this be game day?

42:02

This isn't game day. Is it, isn't, is

42:04

game day Auburn, Kentucky? I think game day

42:06

is Auburn, Kentucky. Yeah. I think you're right.

42:08

This should been game day. I think this

42:10

should have been game day, but it's going

42:13

to be a fun game. Rick Barnes, NATO.

42:15

It's both friends of the program, both guys

42:17

who have come on the show and who

42:19

have shared They're, uh, you know,

42:21

innate wisdom for the game of basketball with

42:23

us. We appreciate them, but I'm going to

42:25

watch that game. It's going to be a

42:27

fun game. blue collar points in this game.

42:29

Yeah. Blue collar points put on your hard

42:31

hat and have some fun. Going to be

42:33

very physical to say the least. Uh, Utah

42:35

state at Colorado state, that is four PM

42:37

on FS one. These are two really good

42:39

teams, two under the radar teams. And again,

42:41

I give the mountain west a lot of

42:43

grief because John Rothstein types give them a

42:45

lot of love. So they need a little

42:47

bit of pushback every once in a while,

42:49

but this game will be fun. Uh, Cincinnati

42:51

at number four, Houston, this is four 30.

42:53

on CBS West Miller on CBS Kelvin Samson

42:55

on CBS Cincinnati They need a win to

42:57

get back in the right side of the

42:59

right conversation for the tournament So let's see

43:01

what happens in that game could be a

43:03

good one Creighton at Xavier 4 30 p

43:05

.m. On Fox. That's another network game SMU

43:07

at Stanford 5 p .m. On ACC Network

43:09

You thought I couldn't wedge in ACC Network

43:11

But yes, I can number 14 Mizzou at

43:13

Vanderbilt 6 p .m. On SEC Network We

43:15

got pit at number 19 Louisville 6 p

43:17

.m. On ESP PIT has to

43:19

win that game if they want to play

43:22

in the NCAA tournament. So circle that one

43:24

as well. If you're a PIT fan, Florida

43:26

State at number two, Duke, 7 p .m.

43:28

on ACC Network, two ACC Network games. That's

43:30

right. Georgia at Texas, 8 p .m. on

43:33

ESPN2. We got number 12, Texas A &M

43:35

at number three, Florida. That's 8 p .m.

43:37

on SEC Network. That game should be on

43:39

ESPN proper. That's going to be a great

43:41

game. Buzz Williams taken on the golden boy.

43:44

Uh, number 22, Arizona at number nine, Iowa

43:46

state, nine PM on ESPN. This is Caleb

43:48

Love. He had the big shot, the force

43:50

overtime in their first meeting. This is going

43:52

to be a fun one. Uh, Hilton magic

43:55

will be at play as always. West Virginia

43:57

at number 25, BYU 10 PM on ESPN

43:59

too. And the final game on Saturday that

44:01

you need to watch a WCC showdown for

44:03

the triple by Gonzaga. at san francisco 11

44:06

p .m on espn um san francisco friends

44:08

of the program that's going to be a

44:10

good game for them right now they're ahead

44:12

of gonzaga in the standings in the wcc

44:14

and they're looking for that triple buy in

44:16

the wcc tournament on sunday we got number

44:19

11 wisconsin at number eight michigan state that's

44:21

130 p .m on cbs we got illinois

44:23

at number 15 number 15 michigan 345 on

44:25

cbs and the last game to watch on

44:27

sunday just because we love them pinning hard

44:30

away it's been too long number 18 memphis

44:32

at uab four PM on ESPN.

44:34

Those are all the games to watch that

44:36

I have. Kyle, anything that I missed on

44:38

my list, you hit my Sunday, exactly. And

44:41

I would just posit USC at Oregon Saturday

44:43

at one PM because Oregon's, we don't even

44:45

have to say it anymore. It's their Oregon.

44:48

I don't know. They're Oregon. Yeah. Oregon. They're

44:50

fascinating. They have a lot of quad one

44:52

wins also a lot of losses. So you

44:55

do with that, what you may the net

44:57

is always a fascinating game. But right now,

44:59

This weekend we have a lot of games

45:01

that you need to watch as I just

45:03

listed them all out. I mean, I'm I'm

45:06

tired right now I feel like Chris bourbon

45:08

after he does the fastest two minutes. I

45:10

I need to break Let's get the shout

45:12

out stuff because you know the games to

45:14

watch. Let's start here Shout out to the

45:16

greatest coach in basketball history coach Normandale the

45:19

team the team the team Gene Hackman RIP

45:21

I mean you can go through the lineage

45:23

of all the Gene Hackman movies that matter

45:25

I got a Royal Tenenbaum right behind me

45:27

right here one of my favorite movies one

45:30

of my comfort movies and When I saw

45:32

that news obviously 95 years old, you know

45:34

Anytime you see any legend that pass away

45:36

you have some thoughts on it, but coach

45:38

Normandale I love to see Pat Kelsey. Hey

45:41

coach a Louisville tweeter Normandale, all these coaches

45:43

coming out. He had such a direct impact.

45:45

We had Rick Barnes on the show last

45:47

week. We talked to him about Hoosiers and

45:49

Hickory High, where he actually ended up playing

45:51

high school basketball at Hickory High School and

45:54

same colors and everything. Obviously it's the Indiana

45:56

version. We went to the high school myself

45:58

and Mark Titus when I was in Indiana

46:00

in 2021. So just a lot

46:02

of connective tissue there and, you know, Hoosiers,

46:04

if you haven't seen it lately. Go watch

46:07

it right now in honor of coach Dale.

46:09

So shout out to him and uh rest

46:11

in peace uh to both him and his

46:13

wife. Um shout out to rick patino. We

46:15

are not interested in sharing anything. Uh this

46:17

is what he said after he uh was

46:19

interviewed by john rossian after getting the share

46:21

of the biggies championship rick patino is the

46:23

first head coach in division one history to

46:25

win a regular season conference title with five

46:27

different schools b u kentucky Louisville, Iona and

46:29

St. John's. He also will be the sixth

46:31

coach to take a team. to the NCAA

46:33

tournament when he takes St. John's to the

46:35

tournament this year. So that will be the

46:37

most all time. So Rick Petino is on

46:40

a heater right now. St. John's hasn't done

46:42

anything since 2000. Kyle, you're fired up. I

46:44

know you are. I'm fired up and you've

46:46

had a much longer relationship with this man

46:48

than I have at least paying attention to

46:50

him. What would you say his historical, like

46:52

if you had to aggregate his media grade,

46:54

like was he like, I don't know if

46:56

it's just that he's a, you know, the

46:58

New York post and it's the headlines or,

47:00

but it seems like he's got really good

47:02

clips. Uh, was he always this

47:04

kind of like, I don't know if media

47:07

darling's the word, but like, did he have

47:09

this like favorable light in the press? I

47:11

mean, obviously I know there's scandals and stuff,

47:13

but when that shit wasn't going on, I

47:16

don't know. This seems like as well as

47:18

it could go from a like talking to

47:20

microphone standpoint. It's like, it's like one of

47:22

those, the classic like, you know, godfather, like

47:25

we like them, but they're also the anti

47:27

-hero. I mean, Rick Puccino has always been

47:29

the anti -hero and he's always been very

47:31

contankerous and very contentious with the media, but

47:34

he's also had this level and layer of

47:36

like... Man, he just loves the game though.

47:38

You know, like that's really the pass for

47:40

Rick Petito. But I do think since he

47:43

left a glueable, he was very contentious with

47:45

the media because, you know, he had the

47:47

NCAA, you know, cloud. He had the Adidas

47:49

thing. Iona. Everyone was rooting for him though.

47:52

Iona. Everybody was like, and they're in the

47:54

tournament. Look at this. Rick Petito back from

47:56

Greece. Greece is when he actually became a

47:58

media darling because he was in Greece and

48:01

he was basically calling into radio shows if

48:03

you remember and talking about like how bad

48:05

the coaching was in America, how the game

48:07

over in Europe was so much better, how

48:10

they had so much more passion, how they

48:12

had so much understanding of the game of

48:14

basketball. Like he was just dumping on them

48:16

and I saw Adam Zagoria put this out

48:18

but like In 2019, he had written a

48:21

piece with Rick Petino. Rick Petino said if

48:23

he had gotten the St. John's job, he

48:25

could turn them around at like, you know,

48:27

it was Luke Karnasekka back on the sidelines.

48:30

And that's what he's doing right now. So

48:32

Rick Petino, he basically manifested this version of

48:34

his life where he was in Greece. He

48:36

was down and out. They said he would

48:39

never coach college again. People forget this. Like

48:41

all of our biggest, you know, college high

48:43

profile media reporters, like go look back in

48:45

2016, 2017. They all wrote stories that Rick

48:48

Petino will never. coach, college basketball again. And

48:50

the fact that he just won the big

48:52

East in the year 2025 is unbelievable. It

48:54

really is. Like, I don't even, I think

48:57

we're downplaying how insane it is that Rick

48:59

Petino has done this at St. John's, uh,

49:01

when it comes to the historical context of

49:03

this program. So Rick Petino, shout out to

49:06

you, impressive stuff and impressive run. And,

49:08

uh, like you said, Kyle, he is playing it

49:10

right because he doesn't want to share anything. He

49:13

doesn't want to pat himself on the back. He

49:15

doesn't want these guys to get too high. Um,

49:17

he is keeping them hungry. And that is what

49:19

he wants when it comes to March. Rick Petino

49:22

knows what the long game is. I'm excited to

49:24

see what this team looks like as we turn

49:26

the page into March. Let's do some more shout

49:28

out shout out to the Marey Burnett. He wins

49:30

at the buzzer, uh, Michigan over Rutgers. If you

49:33

didn't see that shot, incredible shot, incredible moment, incredible

49:35

reaction, Michigan right now. Um, if you don't know,

49:37

they are on a tear. 10 of their last

49:39

12 games have been decided by four points or

49:42

less and or have gone into over. they're nine

49:44

and three in the stretch. So they're basically the

49:46

luckiest team in the country. So if you're a

49:48

dusty May fan, may the odds ever be in

49:51

your favor at this point. And Burnett hit a

49:53

big shot there. We mentioned the Holloman shot, but

49:55

I just have to say it again, Trey Holloman,

49:57

the half court he against Maryland. I know Maryland

50:00

fans don't want to relive it. SVP did a

50:02

really good job kind of making fun of himself

50:04

in that moment as it happened, but boy, was

50:06

that something else? That was an insane shot, an

50:09

insane moment. And Maryland fans, I feel like you

50:11

got some karmic debt on your side where good

50:13

things are going to happen once you get to

50:15

March. So I just remember that, put that in

50:18

your back pocket, but a great shot and a

50:20

great moment for Michigan State shot. The Zion Stanford,

50:22

he called game for temple. He had his shot

50:24

blocked. He gets the ball back. He then makes

50:26

the shot over South Florida. This happened right after

50:29

Holloman hit the half court. He, I then cut

50:31

over to the temple game. I watched this kid

50:33

get blocked, regathered the ball and then make the

50:35

shot to win the game in the temple game

50:38

over South Florida. Uh, Zion Stanford is the that

50:40

makes you go take a walk. I was like,

50:42

I was like, what is happening? Like Wednesday night,

50:44

like Wednesday night was crazy. There's a lot going

50:47

on here. So a temple shout out to you,

50:49

Michigan shout out to you. Michigan say shout out

50:51

to you. A lot of a buzzer beaters and

50:53

good moments there. Uh, shout out to Trey Johnson,

50:56

Texas freshman, who's a stud. He leads the SEC

50:58

in scoring against Arkansas and overtime. The kid had

51:00

39 points, 14 of 28, 50 % from the

51:02

field, seven, 11 from three. And if you watch

51:05

Texas, Trey Johnson is by far their best player.

51:07

He is breaking Kevin Durant's records. Uh, he broke

51:09

his debut scoring record. He broke his freshmen scoring

51:11

record in this game with 39 points and he

51:13

just looks the part. And I do feel like,

51:16

um, there are two languages in college basketball. far

51:18

right now, there's the 25 year old Chad Baker,

51:20

Mazzara and Jenai brooms of the world. And then

51:22

there's the trade Johnson, Cooper flag, Dylan harpers of

51:25

the world. Um, there's two different conversations happening at

51:27

the same time, which is great for the sport.

51:29

We have both not either or, as I said

51:31

to even before, but trade Johnson, we should be

51:34

talking about more. I mean, Texas might not make

51:36

the tournament, but he's been incredible. He's an incredible

51:38

watch. I think he's going to go to the

51:40

combine and some people are going to say, why

51:43

is this guy not considered as a number one,

51:45

number two, number three pick? I think he'll be

51:47

in that range. And, uh, if you have. to

51:49

watch Arkansas lately. They've been playing some good basketball.

51:52

Give them some love for winning this game. But

51:54

man, trade Johnson has a lot of fun to

51:56

watch. So I wanted to give him some love.

51:59

Shout out to Dan Hurley. This was his response. He

52:01

was asked about handling the press and he said, I

52:03

think the press has been assholes to me all year.

52:05

And then he took a little bit of a beat,

52:07

you know, kind of gave a rice mile there. Obviously

52:10

he was having some fun. He said, Oh, you meant,

52:12

you met on the court. Okay. Okay.

52:14

I got you. So Dan Hurley. poking

52:16

fun back at the media. The media

52:18

taking shots at Hurley. He's taking shots

52:20

back. I like when you do, we

52:22

like connotations on this program. And

52:25

uh, I like Dan Hurley being able to

52:27

flip the press into the press and uh,

52:29

that's good stuff I mean Travis Scott said

52:31

that once once by the time I believe

52:33

nobody can press me but the press, right?

52:35

That's right. So a little double entendre there

52:37

for Dan Hurley. Love to see it. Uh,

52:39

shout out to Tommy Lloyd. I thought this

52:41

was a great moment. I like Tommy Lloyd,

52:43

uh, you know, full disclosure, but he got,

52:45

he got really emotional talking about, uh, Brady

52:47

and Landon Smith. These are the sons of

52:49

Craig Smith, Utah head coach who just got

52:51

fired. Uh, Smith was fired on Monday. landed

52:53

the director of operations and Brady is a

52:55

walk on the team. They were in McHale

52:58

center and Tommy Lloyd was just talking about

53:00

how tough it is for those kids that

53:02

have to go through that. Having their dad

53:04

get fired but still having to be on

53:06

the team and you know, obviously work as

53:08

far as what Landon's doing for the director

53:10

of operation So just a nice moment and

53:12

reminds us all how human this all is

53:14

and we see it with the trade deadline

53:16

every year in the NBA all these guys

53:18

get their whole families and lives uprooted and

53:20

it's all for like a tweet basically and

53:22

For people to feel like cash considerations, but

53:24

in college basketball for a guy to get

53:26

fired like you did Craig Smith And when

53:28

he got fired it was very strange to

53:30

me I fired Chris Holtman. The same thing

53:32

happened to Chris. I mean, everyone's talking about

53:34

Craig Smith, but Chris Holtman, same thing happened

53:37

last year. I don't understand the timing of

53:39

this. And I'm sure there's some sort of

53:41

contractual reason for it or whatever, or I

53:43

don't know, but Craig Smith's a really good

53:45

coach. He'll get another job. And I liked

53:47

Tommy Lloyd, uh, standing up for his kids.

53:49

That was really cool to see. Uh, shout

53:51

out to Doug Gottlieb. Shout out to Kyle

53:53

Boone. He wrote the story. This was a

53:55

CBS sports story, but he went on Valentine's

53:57

day and followed Doug Gottlieb around. And in

53:59

the story, during the story as Cal Boone,

54:01

and shout out to Cal Boone. He's a

54:03

reporter, college basketball reporter for CBS. As

54:06

he's following Doug Gottlieb around, he

54:08

saves his team's arena to try to

54:10

break the 20 game losing streak. These

54:12

are things that Doug Gottlieb did in

54:14

the story. He also

54:17

looked up how to stage

54:19

it on chat GPT. So

54:21

that's fascinating. I

54:23

had no idea that chat GPT was so prevalent in

54:25

my life. I had some friends a couple of weekends

54:28

ago talking about how much they use chat GPT and

54:30

I was like, what is happening? to get it to

54:32

help me with my taxes and it was just like,

54:34

I don't think I should. That's

54:37

the chat GPT that I use Kyle every time that

54:40

I've tried to use it It's just like I ask

54:42

a simple question and it usually gives me the wrong

54:44

answer I actually try to use it for notes the

54:46

one time that I had this big moment with Lamar

54:48

Jackson Like I'm trying to look up his playoffs stats.

54:51

So like I was like, I'll do this quick Let's

54:53

see if chat GPT can just give us it was

54:55

right before us, but I go on the air was

54:57

south chat GPT gave these stats I assumed they were

54:59

right Kyle. They were wrong. I said I'm on the

55:02

shelf I got absolutely eviscerated and I was like this

55:04

stupid idiot computer. So never

55:06

trust you. Here's the one thing. The one

55:08

thing I've used it for the most is

55:10

when I write down a grocery list, I'm

55:12

like, put this in the, in the most

55:14

efficient way that I could use, go from

55:16

a Ralph starting in the produce section, ending

55:18

over at the deli section. And it will

55:20

put, it will put those things in them

55:22

for the most part in the right places.

55:24

So I can knock them off the list

55:27

one at a time. But that's, that's really

55:29

the only use I've had for chat GPT.

55:31

I like that one because it's more suggestion

55:33

based. Mine was fact based. And I think

55:35

the facts are wrong. Uh, I'm saying that

55:37

so like if you're writing reports or like

55:39

doing schoolwork and you're using chat tbt like

55:41

to the 13 year old that's listening to

55:43

this fact -check yourself You know what I

55:45

mean? Like you don't know dude. If you

55:47

hear that in you're in trouble. You're in

55:49

trouble. You're in trouble, buddy But yeah, do

55:52

a google search like I think google should

55:54

be your secondary search now if you're gonna

55:56

be a chat tbt guy Which I'm not

55:58

a chat tbt guy, but it sounds like

56:00

uh, Doug Gottlieb is uh, he also had

56:02

his Hummer by a bus and a snowplow

56:04

within 24 hours This is all within the

56:06

same story. So he saved the arena. He

56:08

used chat's UPT and his Hummer was hit

56:10

by both a bus and a snowplow all

56:12

within one story. So Doug Gottlieb, he did

56:14

get a win though. They beat Detroit Mercy.

56:17

Famously Detroit Mercy has the book guy, one

56:20

of our favorite favorite characters in college basketball.

56:22

So Doug Gottlieb stuffed him in a locker.

56:24

and said, take that. We get the win.

56:27

I can't believe this story. Shout out to Kyle

56:29

Boone for writing this story. Shout out to Doug

56:31

Gottlieb for being Doug Gottlieb because this is great

56:33

stuff. Did you expect he'd have a Hummer, Kyle?

56:37

Yep. Okay. Yeah,

56:39

he's an egg. He's an enigma and Hummers are

56:42

harder and harder to find. So, well, you know,

56:44

I find that fascinating because he and LeBron are

56:46

in like a feud, obviously, like he talks a

56:48

lot of junk about Brani and like LeBron has

56:51

like dunked on his team this year, right? He

56:53

did like a big quote tweet being like, what

56:55

are you going to win a conference game? Basically

56:57

is what LeBron did. But you know what's funny?

56:59

We're all a lot more alike than we are

57:02

different as Maya Angelou once taught us. And you

57:04

know who else drives a Hummer? LeBron James. Uh,

57:06

so LeBron and Doug Gottlie both driving hummers. Yeah,

57:09

maybe they're actually best friends. Maybe they should

57:12

have a conversation about how much they love

57:14

hummers. I don't know. I'm just saying, I'm

57:16

trying to find the, uh, connective tissue between

57:18

these people. Uh, next up, shout out to

57:20

this guy. Uh, he is the McNeese state

57:22

manager. Did you see this guy? They're calling

57:24

him the aura king. He's a mere con.

57:26

Um, and he had a great clip, uh,

57:28

that we need to use for our, you

57:30

know, we do this guy, that guy, the

57:32

guy, we need this for that guy. Like

57:34

every time we do that guy the week,

57:36

I need to play this clip, uh, of

57:38

a mere con saying I'm that guy. guy.

57:40

Um, this kid is great. Uh, he's obviously

57:42

been molded by Will Wade as you can

57:44

tell. And, uh, he's going to

57:46

be a superstar. So I, you know, I don't

57:48

know him personally. I know him via the internet,

57:50

but I'm pulling for him. I'm a fan. So

57:52

Amir Khan, you are that guy. Stamped and approved

57:54

by the committee that does the that guy designations

57:57

and congratulations and kudos to you for it real

57:59

The team loves them too. So I like me

58:01

me state. I like what they got going on

58:03

Shout out to robert morris. They won the horizon

58:05

league robert morris is where five star basketball camp

58:07

was held Not always but you know a lot

58:10

of the camps a lot of the big camps

58:12

were held at robert morris have a soft spot

58:14

for robert morris visited there one time and They

58:16

won the horizon league and I had some people

58:18

tweeting at me that they like Robert Morris has

58:20

a sleeper in the tournament this year. So keep

58:23

your eyes. need, need, we need

58:25

to start filling out those Cinderella's Cinderella. Yeah.

58:27

Like, uh, like, who do you think will

58:30

be this year's Cinderella? Reach out to us.

58:32

Let us know. Robert Morris is on the

58:34

list. Uh, shout out to this compass coming

58:36

back. It is the O K C starting

58:38

five versus the Auburn starting five. Now last

58:40

year it was North Carolina starting five versus

58:42

O K C starting five. The year before

58:44

that it was Alabama starting five versus O

58:46

K C starting five. So this is a

58:48

trend that has continued now. Now we're going

58:50

on three years. So I wanted to give

58:52

some love or sorry, it was Oklahoma, not

58:54

Alabama. Two years ago, the Brady Manic, Austin

58:57

Reeves, Oklahoma team. That was getting

58:59

the cops. It's good to be doing this.

59:01

I just, I like who is putting this graphic out.

59:04

It kind of reminds me of like the, when they

59:06

used to do the Alabama Cleveland Browns, you know, it

59:08

was like, can the Alabama, can Alabama beat the Cleveland

59:10

Browns this year? You know, they did it for like

59:12

four straight years. Like, yeah, you

59:14

have to pick a bad team. You be

59:16

like one of the title favorites. Oklahoma City

59:19

is the number one seed in the West

59:21

and they're just as young as Auburn and

59:23

they're basically trying to dunk. They're trying to

59:25

dunk on Auburn. They're trying to dunk. on

59:28

the old teams. And I'm just

59:30

saying this, we don't care. We don't care. We

59:32

don't, don't try to put yourself into our lane

59:34

with this NBA cop. We don't want to see

59:36

it. We're over it. Shout out to Bill Plashke.

59:39

This was a, just like a quote card in

59:41

his story about Mick Cronin. And I thought you

59:43

would enjoy this cop cause a big Mick Cronin

59:45

quote guy. This is what Bill Plashke put has

59:47

Mick Cronin looked in a mirror question mark. This

59:50

was a quote card. I just thought

59:52

that was great. I didn't read the story. Um,

59:54

I have no idea what the story was about.

59:56

I just like, I, I swiped through the LA

59:58

times and one of the cards was Micron and

1:00:00

yelling and it was Bill Plashke quoted and he

1:00:03

said, as Micron and looked in a mirror. So.

1:00:05

Uh, if anybody knows that, including Micron and let

1:00:07

us know, but, uh, I just thought that was

1:00:09

a fun question to ask. Uh, shout out to

1:00:11

Bobby Hurley, Jr. Uh, if you didn't

1:00:13

see this, Bobby Hurley, Jr. Had to play Adam Miller,

1:00:15

got hurt. So Bobby Hurley, Jr. Played against,

1:00:18

uh, BYU. He was guarding a lottery pick in

1:00:20

Yeager or Demons. So, uh, this is the son

1:00:22

of Bobby Hurley, his son, Bobby Hurley, Jr. Got

1:00:24

to play. And then it got me thinking, my

1:00:27

will is spinning. Who is the coach's son of

1:00:29

the year? Um, this year there's a lot of

1:00:31

good candidates. Um, I think Bobby Hurley Jr. Now

1:00:33

officially in the mix. Joe Fugh is the leader

1:00:36

in the clubhouse. Joe Fugh famously dunked on by

1:00:38

VJ Edgecomb at the beginning of the season. People

1:00:40

forget this. And also Joe Fugh started in the

1:00:42

St. Mary's, uh, senior night game and a lot

1:00:45

of Gonzaga fans, they got down big early because

1:00:47

of Joe Fugh starting and they lost the game

1:00:49

and ended up being a closer game at the

1:00:51

end. But a lot of people were saying Joe

1:00:54

Fugh was the reason why they lost the game.

1:00:56

So, uh, coach's son of the year. A hot

1:00:58

topic last year, Andrew Hurley was the obvious coach's

1:01:00

son of the year. Um, we had coach K's

1:01:03

grandson back in 2022, which was the first time

1:01:05

the coach's son was actually a grandson. But, uh,

1:01:07

we'll see how it plays out. Bobby Hurley, uh,

1:01:09

junior, you're in the mix. Shout out to you.

1:01:11

Shout out to this headline from ESPN. LeBron is

1:01:14

having a historic run of bad luck. Let's find

1:01:16

out why. Um, That's

1:01:18

a headline of the year nominee. I don't

1:01:20

even understand You just got Luke on his

1:01:23

team or something like that. Oh, okay. Yeah.

1:01:25

This, this was yesterday. This was on ESPN.com

1:01:27

yesterday. LeBron is, and I don't know who

1:01:29

wrote this, so I apologize. I mean, I'm

1:01:31

sure there is some factual data behind this

1:01:33

as to why he is some chat GBT.

1:01:35

No, maybe they wrote this. Maybe chat GBT

1:01:37

wrote this for ESPN.com. But

1:01:40

yeah, LeBron is having a historic run of bad

1:01:42

luck. Let's find out why. And like you said,

1:01:44

Kyle, my immediate response, and I think anybody who

1:01:46

has a brain would go, did it? Luke could

1:01:48

just get traded to the Lakers for basically nothing.

1:01:52

Yes, he did. So I think that's pretty

1:01:54

lucky. But, you know, who am I? Shout

1:01:56

out to Clemson, 15 ACC wins, most conference

1:01:58

wins in Clemson history. Our

1:02:00

guy, Tio, very excited was on the call

1:02:03

for that game. So Clemson Tigers doing some

1:02:05

good work. Shout out to Ron Harper, my

1:02:07

favorite Twitter follow. He said this during the

1:02:09

Michigan game. We mentioned the Michigan close wins.

1:02:11

Well, against Rutgers, Rutgers probably should have won

1:02:13

this game. The officials were definitely

1:02:15

giving a home whistle for Michigan. Let's just be

1:02:17

honest, Michigan fans, you know what it is. You're

1:02:20

Michigan men. You can be honest. You can admit

1:02:22

it. But run Harper tweeted this, which I thought

1:02:24

was great. And he tweeted it at NCAA and

1:02:26

at March madness. He said, I will say it

1:02:28

again. So much should look into the officials in

1:02:30

college basketball. And

1:02:32

he added them. So I just love that.

1:02:34

I just love that Ron Harper has potentially

1:02:36

the number one pick and, uh, you know,

1:02:39

one of the best freshmen we've seen in

1:02:41

college basketball. And he's tweeting like all of

1:02:43

our dads would, if they watched us get

1:02:45

screwed by the officials. So that's a Ron

1:02:47

Harper. He's the best shots of Spike Lee.

1:02:49

He loves NEC hoops. He was at the

1:02:51

Wagner, LIU game, not the Wagner LIU game,

1:02:53

the Wagner LIU game and that was court

1:02:55

side. So love to see Spike Lee. Obviously

1:02:57

it goes to all the next games, but

1:02:59

he's supporting college basketball. Yeah. Johnny's

1:03:01

just a New York basketball type of guy. He's

1:03:04

just the man and uh, you know liu, I

1:03:06

think Wagner won that game I'll look it up

1:03:08

But he was at that game and I saw

1:03:10

the screen grab so I shout to spike Lee.

1:03:12

This is a fun one cow This is uh,

1:03:15

something near and dear to our hearts because uh,

1:03:17

he is a friend of the program master p

1:03:19

He was named president of basketball operations at the

1:03:21

University of New Orleans. And

1:03:23

you think I'm joking, but I'm not. Master

1:03:25

P named president of basketball operations at University

1:03:27

of New Orleans. And you say to yourself,

1:03:29

what else has been happening at the University

1:03:31

of New Orleans? Why else did I see

1:03:33

them in the news? Correct. You did see

1:03:35

them in the news. They had a point

1:03:37

shaving scandal that literally was broken the exact

1:03:40

same day as the Master P news. Talk

1:03:42

about deflection. There's two sides to every story.

1:03:44

is what I'm learning and master P is

1:03:46

the fun side. And that's the side that

1:03:48

we're going to focus on, but it's a

1:03:50

great photo too of him accepting whatever he,

1:03:52

it's just, you've never seen a happier man

1:03:54

than when he's shaking the hand of whoever

1:03:56

probably just gave him the job or something.

1:03:58

But that was, it was a great photo.

1:04:00

I loved it. I thought it was great.

1:04:02

I love to see Matt. Master P has

1:04:04

always been a fan and a friend of

1:04:06

college basketball, dating back to DeMar DeRosin, uh,

1:04:08

Romeo Miller, playing at USC, right? I mean,

1:04:10

he's always been in on college basketball and,

1:04:12

uh, New Orleans is obviously the place. And,

1:04:14

uh, I saw some people saying that he's

1:04:16

going to make them say on down there.

1:04:18

And I hope he does because, uh, Master

1:04:21

P is that dude. And you and I,

1:04:23

we saw at the wooden award. I mean,

1:04:25

he's a polished like swab guy. You know

1:04:27

what I mean? Like he's a mover and

1:04:29

a shaker. So. Watch out

1:04:31

for Master P. I mean, there's going to be

1:04:33

a five star that goes to New Orleans. Trust

1:04:35

me. Oh, don't doubt it. Yeah. That is a

1:04:37

fact. Like, like Travis Hunter of basketball is going

1:04:40

to New Orleans and he will be playing for

1:04:42

the privateers and Master P will be on the

1:04:44

sidelines. And I'm sure everybody in the crowd will

1:04:46

have a camo night and it'll be no limit

1:04:48

soldier night. And I can't wait to go in

1:04:51

New Orleans. If you need us there, we're ready

1:04:53

because I am team Master P. And I'm a

1:04:55

big fan of whatever he's going to cook up

1:04:57

down there. That's going to be fun. Shout out

1:04:59

to SVP. I mentioned him before, but just wanted

1:05:02

to give him some love. Just had the Maryland

1:05:04

games. He's fired up. He's locked in. Gary Williams

1:05:06

is also there, but. I have a soft spot

1:05:08

for the Maryland Terrapins. I admitted, I've admitted it

1:05:10

before. I'll admit it again. Um, and

1:05:13

I'm happy to see SVP on the sidelines having

1:05:15

fun. I know it wasn't a, a fun way

1:05:17

to end the game, but it, uh, it was

1:05:19

good to see, uh, everybody engaged and having fun

1:05:21

out there. Shout to D Rose. He wants chess

1:05:23

in the Olympics. Uh, Derek Rose tweeted this at

1:05:26

Casey Wasserman that they need chess in the Olympics.

1:05:28

He said, I saw the break dancing. It's time

1:05:30

for chess. Kyle, your thoughts

1:05:32

still get fucked up. I'm

1:05:34

just like shots over there. Always. Like

1:05:36

we're talking about chess and ray guns

1:05:38

taking shots. Uh, do you like the

1:05:40

idea though? Chess and the Olympics. Do

1:05:42

you, do you like the one that

1:05:44

I wouldn't watch? And that's totally fine.

1:05:46

It's just another thing I wouldn't spend

1:05:48

any time watching. And every, every Olympics

1:05:50

I am like, especially with YouTube TV,

1:05:53

I, I, you know, I converse with

1:05:55

my wife and I'm like, which one

1:05:57

should we record? You know, and they

1:05:59

just, Just a full, full DVR of

1:06:01

unwatched Olympics things, archery, sound school. They

1:06:03

all sound cool. Everything when you're thinking

1:06:05

about devoting, you know, 20, 30 minutes,

1:06:07

whatever, even with the fast forward function,

1:06:09

I just don't pull the trigger. Yeah,

1:06:13

I have a hard time when I don't understand

1:06:15

the rules either. You know what I mean? Like

1:06:17

when I don't know what's good or not, I

1:06:19

have a problem with like lots of the winter

1:06:21

sports because of that. I'm like, who is grading

1:06:23

this? And like, I need to see their sheets.

1:06:25

I don't understand. Even that Turkish marksman that like,

1:06:27

you know, went out with no equipment, his hand

1:06:29

in his pocket and just destroyed the competition. I

1:06:31

said I was going to go back and watch

1:06:33

it. I had it recorded. Just watched the clip.

1:06:35

It was fine. It was just the same. I'm

1:06:37

sure as if I, you know, didn't watch it

1:06:39

at all. So. And honestly, if you watch it,

1:06:41

it would take some lower away. Olympics. I don't

1:06:43

give a shit. Yeah, put it in the summer

1:06:45

Olympics. It would take some lower away sometimes when

1:06:47

you watch. Like that guy was just, the photo

1:06:49

was enough. You didn't need to see him actually

1:06:51

be alive. You saw a photo and you're like,

1:06:53

I know everything this guy is. you see that

1:06:55

guy and then you see like the woman who

1:06:57

went right before him or whoever that was with

1:06:59

like the. the crazy glasses and scope and the

1:07:01

glove and everything. And it was just like, that

1:07:03

guy's got his hand in his pocket. Yeah. A

1:07:06

picture is worth a thousand words. You're right.

1:07:08

It's same with Reagan. Like you saw one

1:07:10

steel, one still frame of Reagan with like

1:07:13

her tongue out. You're like, Oh wow, she

1:07:15

should not be dancing. Like what is happening?

1:07:17

So look, we can learn a lot in

1:07:19

a photo. Sometimes we don't even see the

1:07:22

whole thing, but a chess D Rose wants

1:07:24

it. Speaking of great point guards, Stephen Curry,

1:07:26

56 points. 12 threes. This was on the

1:07:28

nine year anniversary of the shot against Oklahoma

1:07:31

city. And uh, I remember that shot

1:07:33

against Oklahoma city. That's when I was doing the

1:07:35

bill Simmons podcast and we had an emergency podcast.

1:07:37

That's how incredible that moment was. Uh, but 56

1:07:39

points for stephen curry. He's still doing it. That

1:07:41

made me fired up. I love to see it.

1:07:44

Kyle, any shout outs that I miss anything else,

1:07:46

uh, in the college basketball or in your universe

1:07:48

that we missed? I've got, yeah, I got three.

1:07:50

Um, so I didn't know that you could

1:07:53

avoid a court storming, um, violation.

1:07:55

If you just wait 90 seconds, I

1:07:57

guess that's a lot to ask, you know, 20

1:07:59

,000 people to wait 90 seconds. But that's what

1:08:02

happened when Georgia beat Florida. They held

1:08:04

the, they held the crowd off for about 90

1:08:06

seconds. And I guess you just have to let

1:08:08

the officials and the players get off the court.

1:08:10

And that's it. That's the fine line between a

1:08:12

big fine and nothing. I

1:08:15

did not know it was 90 seconds, but

1:08:17

it seems like that should be talked about

1:08:19

more. Like they should put a clock. Like

1:08:21

when it hits zero in the arena. Yeah.

1:08:24

Yeah. Right. Like it hits zero. Wow. You

1:08:26

know, the everything is like a game over.

1:08:28

We're done. Everyone's clearing out. And then there's

1:08:30

a clock that starts on the jumbo Tron

1:08:32

from 90 seconds and it's counting down and

1:08:35

the lights are like, you know what I

1:08:37

mean? And you make it a whole moment.

1:08:39

I'm right there with you. Smart. Good job,

1:08:41

Georgia. That's one. You might be happy to

1:08:43

hear this if you trust this guy. So

1:08:46

the NCAA senior vice president

1:08:48

Dan Gavit just talked to, I believe it

1:08:50

was. Oh, trust Dan Gavit. We trust Dan

1:08:52

Gavit. He just threw a bunch of cold

1:08:54

water on the expansion talks, which we've been

1:08:56

played with for a little while. And he

1:08:58

basically said, like, you know, we're not forget

1:09:01

about 76 or whatever. We might not do

1:09:03

anything at all. He's like,

1:09:05

I get maybe this is just him kicking the can

1:09:07

down the road. And he just said, we're not, we're

1:09:09

not nearing a point to be able to say that

1:09:11

we've agreed on anything this year. So it sounds like

1:09:13

you'll have another. another year of,

1:09:15

uh, at least, you know, not worrying.

1:09:18

So that's nice, right? With all, we've done a

1:09:20

couple of segments and we've seen it, you know,

1:09:22

around and around recently. It's just the thing that

1:09:24

people are talking about. So it makes it seem

1:09:26

like it's super, you know, uh, like

1:09:28

right, right over the hill here. But, uh, he,

1:09:31

he, he said, uh, just relax. We don't, we

1:09:33

don't have the votes. Well, then he's the one,

1:09:35

you know what I mean? He's the one that

1:09:37

we need. Yeah. He's the one we need to

1:09:40

listen to. It does feel like everybody just says

1:09:42

it's inevitable. For whatever reason like

1:09:44

someone paid Seth Davis to start writing

1:09:46

that it was inevitable because he really

1:09:48

did like he like it was out

1:09:50

of nowhere and now he's now he's

1:09:52

yelling at everybody That like if you

1:09:54

argue back like he's gonna be upset

1:09:56

about he's like are you an idiot?

1:09:58

Are you dumb and we're like what

1:10:00

what is happening? Am I I'm dumb

1:10:02

now, but it's okay. We're all dumb

1:10:04

sometimes, but no expansion. That's smart. We

1:10:06

like that Yeah, final one here. We've

1:10:08

got a Senator, I guess he would

1:10:10

be a representative from Oregon, who is

1:10:12

proposing a bill that will, let me

1:10:14

see what I write here. It basically

1:10:16

wouldn't require athletes to disclose NIL or

1:10:18

any kind of deal to any organization,

1:10:20

including the NCAA. This is just for

1:10:22

Oregon. This is not, you know, maybe

1:10:24

he's hoping it would pick up steam

1:10:26

or something. I just feel like at

1:10:28

this point when no one knows what

1:10:30

the hell's going on, It's weird

1:10:33

to have like more ambiguity. He's trying to

1:10:35

make it FERPA. He's trying to make it

1:10:37

like, uh, you can't see this. Like these

1:10:39

are private rights to know what the, and

1:10:41

I, I kind of like that. Cause now

1:10:43

nobody knows. I like the ambiguity. Like, you

1:10:45

know, let's be honest, Kyle, you're watching college

1:10:47

basketball back in 1984. You see Patrick Ewing

1:10:49

playing for Georgetown. You're saying to yourself deep

1:10:51

down, wonder how much it took for him

1:10:53

to get there. You know what I mean?

1:10:56

Like that's just what it's always been. I

1:10:58

like the mystery. Would this come out anyway

1:11:01

because the agents want people to know what

1:11:03

they're getting sort of like case wins. Well,

1:11:05

the agents lie. So like everything they say

1:11:07

is wrong. Everything they say is

1:11:10

a lie. I'd love to be able to

1:11:12

go to a website, just know what people

1:11:14

have. I mean, listen, if you don't want

1:11:16

the NCAA to have it, whatever, I just,

1:11:18

I'd like to know like, what's that worth?

1:11:20

According to chat GBT, Bronny made $7 .6

1:11:22

million at USC. And according to real life

1:11:24

reality, I know he did not. So that's

1:11:26

the problem. You know what I mean? Like

1:11:28

what is reported and what is put out

1:11:30

there is not the valuation versus like, what

1:11:32

is reality is so far that nobody knows.

1:11:34

But I like the idea of this bill.

1:11:38

I second the idea. Just I like the mystery because

1:11:40

I, you know, I'm a mystery. I'm a hearty boys

1:11:42

kid. You know what I mean? I like the mysteries.

1:11:44

I like Scooby -Doo. You know what I mean? I

1:11:46

like when I don't know what's going on. I don't

1:11:49

like to know who's behind the, the, the curtain, you

1:11:51

know what I mean? Like I like the shell of

1:11:53

it all. And that's what college basketball, we need a

1:11:55

little bit of that pageantry. And I like the idea

1:11:57

that like some states we do know and some states

1:11:59

we don't like Oregon has all these players. Arizona just

1:12:02

doesn't observe daylight savings time. And it's just like, for

1:12:04

some reason Arizona is just an hour different. And you

1:12:06

just have to know that when someone comes on our

1:12:08

show and the number one kid in the country goes

1:12:10

to play the number one center of the country is

1:12:12

going to play to Oregon. And we're like, man, I

1:12:15

wonder what it took for Oregon to get. It's like,

1:12:17

we'll never know. But then we have someone come in

1:12:19

our show and they're like, I've heard it's 15 million,

1:12:21

you know? And you're like, Oh my God. And we

1:12:23

can never verify that or anything. You know, it's just

1:12:25

like, all right, you flip the mystery. You flip the

1:12:28

mystery. We don't know. We don't know. And

1:12:30

then the players will never tell you.

1:12:32

You mean representative John lively. Oh, man.

1:12:34

I, uh, in Oregon, by the way,

1:12:36

like, if you ever watched the documentary,

1:12:38

Wild Wild Country, like Oregon, the state,

1:12:40

like you can get away with a

1:12:42

lot. Like they started a whole town,

1:12:44

uh, like those forests. Good looking there.

1:12:47

Yeah. The Rajneesh, the Rajneeshi Param or whatever, and

1:12:49

Antelope, Oregon, that story. Like the fact that it

1:12:51

happened and I, you know, there are multiple people

1:12:53

I know from the PNW and I'm like, you

1:12:56

know, Antelope, they're like, oh yeah, that's where young

1:12:58

life is. I'm like, you know, that used to

1:13:00

be a cult, right? Like what? Yeah,

1:13:03

I would say watch the documentaries. Go watch the

1:13:05

documentary. It's chilling stuff. But it's also, it goes

1:13:07

to show that like Oregon, like it seems like

1:13:09

a lot of, they're just throwing stuff at the

1:13:11

wall up there sometimes with some of these bills

1:13:13

and things. So, um, this guy's going

1:13:16

to probably get this approved. And all it takes is

1:13:18

one state to set a precedent, Kyle. Then California is

1:13:20

like, we don't want you to know how much we're

1:13:22

paying these kids for NIO. And then, you know, we're

1:13:24

more progressive. Yeah. Right.

1:13:27

Right. That's exactly how it goes. They're all trying

1:13:29

to compute the organs like what's california doing california

1:13:31

is like, what's, uh, you know, what's washington doing,

1:13:33

right? It's the whole thing. So I don't know

1:13:35

something to keep an eye on. I love when
