1:36

Matt Scarce alongside

1:39

Jeff Patterson sitting in for Blake

1:41

Price today. Four -time Juno Award

1:43

winner Mike Rogerson hitting switches

1:45

and conducting things.

1:47

Thank you once again for filling in.

1:49

Should have worn a dark suit

1:52

going to a funeral tonight. Well,

1:54

you were at a birthday

1:56

celebration, so happy belated to

1:58

SPAT, Shannon. Yes. Yeah.

2:02

So, I was thinking of

2:04

this on the drive

2:06

coming in. You'll

2:10

get your 82 badge again this year.

2:14

How many consecutive Canucks games

2:16

have you covered? That's

2:21

a good question. Every

2:23

one for how many

2:26

years? Oh,

2:29

I've probably

2:31

12 or 13.

2:34

I knew it wasn't all 25, but I figured

2:36

you were on a pretty good run here.

2:38

Ripken -esque. Yeah. I mean,

2:40

you go back to 1040, had the rights,

2:42

was involved then, then got out on the

2:44

road. I

2:46

don't think, in terms of covering, I

2:49

haven't gone to every home game. I skipped

2:51

the two. Taylor Swift nights

2:53

this year. I just didn't want the

2:55

bother of everything that was going on.

2:58

So I took a pass and watched those

3:00

games from the studio as we do all

3:02

the road games as well. But yeah, it's

3:04

been a long time since I have missed

3:06

working a Vancouver Canucks game. Well,

3:08

you got go. So I'm well -versed

3:10

in seasons coming to disappointing ends. Yeah,

3:13

exactly. And you'll want to catch

3:15

Jeff and Irfan rink -wide Vancouver for

3:17

the final time this season. Our Surrey

3:19

Mitsubishi poll question today, will Brock

3:21

Besser's final game as a Canuck be

3:23

emotional for you? You can vote

3:25

yes. You can vote no. Do

3:27

so at the Sakeris and

3:29

Price X and YouTube channels. What

3:32

are you thinking here, Jeff? Yeah.

3:35

I mean, for me, it will be

3:37

a little bit. And I guess stranger

3:39

things have happened than this being the

3:41

last game. But I think we're all

3:43

heading into feeling pretty strongly that it

3:45

can be. And I just think of

3:48

a young guy that, you

3:50

know, a first -round pick that's played over

3:52

500 games for this organization who has

3:54

scored some big goals, has scored a lot

3:56

of goals through his time. He's eighth

3:58

in goals all time as a member of

4:01

the Vancouver Canucks, 12th in points. I

4:04

think of the guy that scored

4:06

in his NHL debut in his hometown

4:08

after turning pro with his parents,

4:10

reading the lineup, a great moment. Adam

4:12

Kirstenblatt of the Hockey News has

4:14

done the math. It is almost exactly

4:16

3 ,000 days since that night in

4:18

Minnesota where his late father, Duke,

4:20

and his mother, Lori, read out the

4:22

starting lineup. Nice touch there.

4:25

I think what gets lost, we all

4:27

remember that moment, but this heralded

4:29

goal scorer coming out of North Dakota.

4:31

Scored four goals in the nine

4:33

games that he played. That's right. And

4:35

gave you an indication of what

4:37

was to come. And then he scored

4:39

29 in 62 games. That was

4:41

a 40 -goal pace in his rookie

4:43

season. And boy, Jeff, did the market

4:45

need that, right? Like everybody at

4:47

that point was aware that the glory

4:50

days of 2011 were over, that

4:52

the core parts of that team were

4:54

fading into the twilights of their

4:56

career and in some cases were moving

4:58

on or had already. been

5:00

moved on. He did

5:03

not precede Thatcher Demko in terms of being

5:05

a draft pick, but it was just

5:07

one year later. And of course, Demko was

5:09

at Boston College as a second round

5:11

pick. Like you thought, okay, that's a halfway

5:13

decent goaltending prospect. But we had no

5:15

idea of knowing at the time that Thatcher

5:17

Demko was going to turn into the

5:19

NHL star that he was. Whereas with Besser,

5:22

from the moment he stepped on the

5:24

ice in North Dakota, it was clear that

5:26

this was a very good player. He

5:28

was a top college player quickly. And

5:30

when he got to Vancouver, boy,

5:32

did he breathe life and optimism into

5:34

a fan base that sorely needed

5:37

it. Yeah, and he looked the part,

5:39

right? Oh, leading man. Remember

5:41

the draft night in Florida, someone came

5:43

up to us and said, not

5:45

only is he a good hockey player,

5:47

but guys, you've got a young

5:49

Robert Redford. And I was

5:51

like, yeah, he does actually look like a

5:53

young Robert Redford. You know,

5:55

I just have spent a few days

5:57

here sort of reminiscing, and I

5:59

think in that rookie season of those

6:02

29 goals where he flat -out beat

6:04

goalies like Henrik Lundqvist and Carey

6:06

Price, you know, stared them down, picked

6:08

his spot, and boom, and scored

6:10

goals that we just hadn't seen. Scored

6:12

by a Vancouver Canuck in a while.

6:14

I think of the four -goal game

6:16

on opening night last year against Edmonton

6:18

that set the pace and the tone

6:20

for the 40 -goal season. We'll

6:23

see if there's another one, but the

6:25

first in his career had never been

6:27

to 30 at that point and then

6:29

gets to 40 last year. Of course,

6:31

the goals in Nashville in game four

6:33

in the playoffs last year. When the

6:35

chips were down and came through and

6:38

then not to be around and able

6:40

to play game seven against the Edmonton

6:42

Oilers had to be crushing two. You

6:44

know, the one thing for me, Matt, is

6:47

that like a lot of people

6:49

will look at Brock Besser and

6:51

say injury prone. Injuries are a

6:53

huge part of the Brock Besser

6:55

story. Never played 82, played 81

6:57

last year. And, of course,

6:59

Game 82 was in Winnipeg. They left

7:01

him behind for the road trip. He

7:03

could have played that one. But just

7:05

going back and looking, the last five

7:07

seasons for Brock Besser, I

7:10

think he's missed. something like

7:12

25 games. It's not a ton. 71, 74,

7:14

81, 74. He'll play tonight. And this

7:16

year, he gets cheap -shotted by Tanner Janelle.

7:18

That's not his fault. That's not injury -prone.

7:20

That was just a crappy hit by a

7:22

guy that had no business doing that.

7:24

And so I would say yes in the

7:26

early going, but the last five years,

7:28

and if he has five to seven games

7:30

a year, I don't think that makes

7:33

you injury -prone. That's life in a contact

7:35

sport. He

7:38

gets drafted in Fort Lauderdale. And

7:41

later that night, myself, Blake,

7:44

our producer, Mike Whittingham, are

7:46

out for dinner on the

7:48

Fort Lauderdale Strip. Pretty late

7:50

dinner, too, after the first

7:52

round. And lo

7:54

and behold, the Besser family is

7:56

at the big table, a

7:58

few tables over from us. Brock

8:00

had come down and done

8:02

the interview with us after being

8:04

selected in our broadcast location

8:06

there at the rink, Panther's home

8:09

facility. And so we

8:11

went over. We introduced ourselves.

8:14

We spent some time with Duke

8:16

and with Laurie and some of

8:18

Ben Hankinson, his agent, was there

8:20

and some other well -wishers. His brother

8:22

Paul was very enthusiastic out there

8:24

and asked Blake and I a

8:27

million and one questions. And really

8:29

from that moment on, at least

8:31

for us and soon for the

8:33

Canucks fan base after that debut

8:35

in Minnesota, We

8:39

got to watch him grow up. I

8:41

mean, he came here very young. As

8:43

mentioned, he represented hope at a

8:45

time when there wasn't much of it.

8:48

He was very open with his

8:50

life, with his story, his

8:52

associations back in Minnesota. Of course,

8:54

his father's health over the

8:56

years. He made us feel like

8:58

we knew him and knew

9:00

the Besser family. And of course,

9:03

the Besser family went through

9:05

so much during his time here.

9:08

He's a feeler. He's an emotional

9:10

guy. We've seen that before. And

9:12

I would suspect that when the

9:14

crowd salutes him tonight that he

9:16

will be emotional again. And I

9:19

think that's appropriate. I voted yes

9:21

just because when I see people

9:23

crying, I feel like I cry

9:25

as well on the poll question.

9:27

Remember when Bruce Boudreaux was ready

9:29

to scratch him on Hockey Fights

9:31

Cancer Night? Oh, my goodness. Yes.

9:33

And he was emotional that day.

9:35

And then Dakota Joshua. either

9:37

came down with something or

9:39

the organization helped Dakota Joshua come

9:41

down with something that allowed

9:43

Brock to get back into the

9:45

lineup. And then he scored

9:47

that night too. A beloved player

9:49

in all factions of the

9:52

dressing room. I did not hear

9:54

a single contrary word about

9:56

Brock Besser over his nine seasons

9:58

here. It seemed like he

10:00

just effortlessly and seamlessly meshed with

10:02

all corners of that dressing

10:04

room. Jeff, needless to say, there

10:06

was a big split this

10:08

year between Elias and JT Miller.

10:10

And one of the things

10:12

that we heard consistently throughout was

10:14

that was troubling for Brock.

10:16

He viewed himself as one of

10:18

the guys who was, you

10:20

know, glue in that room, keeping

10:22

people together and having friendships

10:24

and associations. with all

10:27

corners of the room. And

10:29

so, yeah, this was a difficult

10:31

season for him, not just

10:33

because of that concussion, not just

10:35

because he's down from 40

10:37

goals, but also that he watched

10:39

people that he was quite

10:41

friendly with not be able to

10:43

get along, not be able

10:45

to pull on the rope together

10:47

and lead the Canucks to

10:49

success. Yeah, and look, he's had

10:51

the label Brockstar attached to

10:53

him, but this is a low

10:55

-key, Just a solid dude. He

10:57

is. Minnesota

10:59

nice. No, I mean, he's down to

11:01

earth. He hasn't forgotten those Midwestern

11:03

roots without a doubt. You

11:06

know, I've told this story before on

11:08

maybe this show, but other shows as well.

11:11

In those years when I was out traveling,

11:13

and I guess it was the first year

11:15

that I was out traveling because Botch was

11:17

still with us. And we were in all

11:19

places, the locker room at XL Energy Center

11:21

after a practice in Minnesota. And

11:23

I was chatting up. Brock and Botch

11:25

was with an earshot, but it was

11:27

just me and Brock having a conversation.

11:30

And I've done this far too many

11:32

times throughout my career. It's probably happened

11:34

to you. It happens to most in

11:36

the media where you try to get

11:38

a question out and it doesn't quite

11:40

come out the way you want. So

11:43

Marble Mouth Me is trying to

11:45

convey the question that made perfect

11:47

sense in my head, but it

11:49

wasn't happening in real time. And

11:52

Botch caught wind of this. And

11:54

he started cackling as only Botch could

11:56

at me fumbling and stumbling. Well,

11:58

then Brock started laughing at Botch's reaction.

12:00

And before you do the three

12:02

of us, I mean, it was just

12:04

one of those moments that kind

12:07

of stuck with me, obviously, because we

12:09

lost Jason. And as I was

12:11

thinking about Brock's career in totality here.

12:13

So, yes, you know,

12:15

just a guy that, again. not

12:18

the most outspoken player, not

12:20

a great quote necessarily, but always

12:22

had time and took the

12:24

questions on it. Thoughtful answers. That's

12:26

the other thing I've always

12:28

appreciated about Brock. There

12:32

are not a lot

12:34

of regular human interactions

12:36

in interview settings, particularly

12:38

in the National Hockey

12:40

League, which the players

12:43

are so cliche -ridden,

12:45

stage -managed, PR -train. that

12:47

typically it's just

12:49

not an authentic

12:51

interaction. I always felt

12:53

like Brock's interactions with the press

12:55

and by conduit the fans had a

12:58

genuist to them, an authenticity. Sure,

13:00

and you think of the exit meeting

13:02

a couple years ago when we

13:04

first learned of how close his father

13:06

was to passing, and Ben Kuzma

13:08

asked an honest question. and it just

13:10

struck Brock in that moment, and

13:12

he had to step away from the

13:14

podium, and I think everybody felt

13:16

for him right then and there. You

13:18

saw his teammates react to him,

13:20

too. They realized part of their role

13:22

was to support Brock during father's.

13:24

But as we sit here and we

13:27

wax poetic about the decade that

13:29

has been for Brock Besser, again,

13:31

you're reminded that first it was Bo,

13:33

and now Brock probably, and who knows,

13:36

maybe Demko or Petey, who's going to

13:38

be the next one out the door.

13:40

The pieces of this once promising core

13:42

are just getting stripped away, and it's

13:44

a reminder of what could have been

13:46

the notion that potential is just that.

13:48

It's potential, and unless it's realized, then

13:50

you don't have a whole lot to

13:53

show. Well, and of course, this core

13:55

piece could have been stripped away a

13:57

couple of years ago, right? Or

13:59

weeks ago. Yeah, well, a

14:02

trade request and a

14:04

trade request that was ultimately

14:06

rescinded. By Brock Besser. And

14:08

I think that's also part of the

14:10

story here. That when the going got tough,

14:13

he went down the road that a

14:15

lot of NHL players do. And that is,

14:17

okay, maybe it's time for me to

14:19

move on. And then recommitted and

14:21

rededicated himself to this franchise. Canucks tried to.

14:23

There was no takers at that point

14:25

on a big ticket. So then

14:27

he recommitted and he rededicated

14:29

himself. He took Rick

14:32

Tockett's good counsel and changed the

14:34

way he went about training

14:36

in the summer. Remember, he used

14:38

to play in the beauty

14:40

league. Got out of the beauty

14:42

league. Got out of the

14:45

beauty league. Got into a more

14:47

fruitful training, off -season summer training

14:49

program for him. Came back

14:51

the better player and had his

14:53

career season last year. And

14:56

I think that's also a commentary

14:58

on Brock Besser, not just

15:00

the player he is, but also

15:02

the person. He is, and

15:04

if this is, in fact, his

15:06

last game as a Vancouver

15:09

Canuck and his last chance to

15:11

perform for the fans at

15:13

Rogers Arena, I'm hoping he has

15:15

a big night, and I'm

15:17

hoping the crowd recognizes that and

15:19

salutes him appropriately. The Daily

15:22

Poll question, a presentation of Suri

15:24

Mitsubishi. Everybody at the dealership

15:26

15:37

a new or pre -owned vehicle.

15:39

So get yourself to the dealership.

15:41

You got one more opportunity

15:43

here after tonight's game to reap

some of those savings. Suri

15:52

more value, more savings. Bring them

15:54

any offer. Suri Mitsubishi. We'll

15:57

beat it. Okay,

15:59

let's get to our top story. It's brought

16:01

to you by Yellow Dog Brewing, Neighborhood Brewing,

16:03

and Foolish Winery. Final game of the season. Final

16:06

game for Brock. Final

16:09

game for Pius Suter. Final

16:12

game for Elias Patterson or

16:14

Rick Talkett. Likely

16:16

the end of an era, but

16:18

which eras end tonight for

16:20

the... Vancouver Canucks. They face the

16:22

Vegas Golden Knights, locked into

16:24

10th place in the West, 15th

16:27

in the draft lottery with

16:29

a 1 .1 % chance of jumping

16:31

those 10 spots to pick

16:33

number five. It is team awards

16:35

night. We have a very

16:37

good suspicion that Quinn Hughes is

16:39

going to win team MVP

16:41

and best defenseman. Does he win

16:43

the most exciting player as

16:46

well? Does someone like Kiefer Sherwood

16:48

take home those honors? And

16:50

Jeff. Who is

16:52

your unsung hero for

16:54

the Vancouver Canucks in

16:56

season 24 -25? Well,

16:58

I think Kiefer Sherwood is going to

17:00

win it, even though we have talked

17:03

him up repeatedly as the NHL hits

17:05

king. Everybody is sung in this market.

17:07

a popularity contest. So honestly, for me,

17:09

the guy that didn't get a lot

17:11

of press and a lot of run

17:13

is Derek Forbert. And obviously season comes

17:15

to an unfortunate end the other night. But

17:18

when you think of once he became a

17:20

regular in this lineup just ahead of Christmas, the

17:22

penalty kill took off, as Rick Tockett likes

17:24

to talk about with his arrows. And,

17:27

look, he's the very definition of

17:29

a stay -at -home defenseman. He's not

17:31

here for the fanfare. But he

17:33

was a very quiet, nice

17:35

addition to the lineup. He lost his father

17:37

early on and then got hurt. And so,

17:40

really, it took him until mid -December to become

17:42

a fixture in the lineup. But I would

17:44

say of the guys that don't get talked

17:46

about an awful lot, Yeah,

17:48

I would probably throw my vote

17:50

at Derek Forbert. He really progressed

17:53

as the season went on, including

17:55

offensively. Saw some moments there, yeah.

17:57

And frankly, Jeff, I mean, we

17:59

talked a little bit about yesterday

18:01

the bottom six, whether that's fixed,

18:03

slotting the four forward lines. I

18:06

think there's a real solid case

18:08

for bringing Derek Forbert back, and

18:10

then you're done. On

18:12

defense, right? Like, do you see it

18:14

that way? One more veteran third pair

18:16

addition, low cost. And that's pretty much

18:18

all that's required. Well, and I think

18:20

this will get more play as we

18:22

get past the season. It's the Wielander

18:24

situation, but we're anticipating he will sign.

18:27

But, I mean, we know that they

18:29

need elite talent up front. But you

18:31

know what else they need after a

18:33

season like this one? They need some

18:35

character in that locker room. And

18:37

Derek Forbert, again, just a veteran

18:39

presence, doesn't say a lot, but

18:41

I think had the respect of

18:43

the guys in that room. I

18:45

do wonder if that's on the

18:47

organizational wish list here, is to

18:49

bring in a couple of guys

18:51

that really can hold that locker

18:53

room to account after the way

18:55

things got off the rails this

18:57

year. As

18:59

for Brock, and as we

19:01

mentioned, expecting an emotional... Send

19:03

off here. Now, look, he's

19:06

an unrestricted free agent. Teams

19:08

don't tend to like to

19:10

jump the gun on anything.

19:12

So I'm not sure there's

19:14

going to be anything formal

19:16

by way of the video

19:18

board tonight. But this is

19:20

also an extremely savvy hockey

19:22

market. I suspect Rick Talkett

19:24

puts him in the opening

19:26

lineup so that he can

19:28

be announced. I also suspect

19:30

that Rick Talkett. We'll

19:32

send him out for

19:34

a late face -off, and

19:36

I imagine the crowd will

19:38

recognize and respond accordingly.

19:40

He will play his 554th

19:43

regular season game as

19:45

a Vancouver Canuck tonight. That

19:47

is 22nd all -time. He

19:49

played 29 more in

19:51

the postseason, 215 goals, Jeff,

19:53

including playoffs. He's eighth

19:55

all -time on the regular

19:57

season. Side of things, 457

19:59

points, including playoffs. 12th all time

20:01

for the Vancouver Canucks. He is

20:03

three points behind JT Miller. If

20:05

he were to have a big

20:07

night here, he would pull into

20:10

a tie for 11th with his

20:12

former teammate. 73

20:14

power play goals. That's seventh

20:16

all time in Canucks

20:18

history. One tonight, and he

20:20

ties Stan Smeal for sixth.

20:22

And 28. game -winning goals, which

20:25

is in a tie for ninth

20:27

all -time in Canucks history. If

20:29

he were to get the

20:31

winner tonight, he would tie Tony

20:33

Tanti for eighth place all -time.

20:35

And I think, too, Matt,

20:38

I've done the math here, I

20:40

believe he is fifth all -time

20:42

among guys that have only

20:44

played for the Vancouver Canucks. So

20:46

when we talk about career

20:48

Canucks, Daniel and Henrik, Stan

20:51

Smeal. Dennis Kearns, I

20:53

think, are the only four

20:55

that have played exclusively

20:57

for the Vancouver Canucks. And

21:00

Besser is not closing this

21:02

chapter just yet. He met

21:04

the media this morning, said he

21:06

was hopeful that something could

21:08

be worked out. He wasn't willing

21:11

to concede that this was

21:13

going to be his final

21:15

game as a Vancouver Canuck. And

21:17

look, we know this

21:20

has been a tortured and

21:22

tormented franchise over 55

21:24

years of existence. Not only

21:26

no Stanley Cup championships,

21:28

but also as Ariel from

21:30

Canucks Army points out, Besser

21:33

is the latest in

21:36

a long line of

21:38

long, painful divorces between

21:40

Vancouver Canucks players and

21:42

this ravenous fan base.

21:45

Pavel Bure, of course, once upon a

21:47

time, you saw the end coming

21:49

there with a trade request and a

21:51

holdout. Roberto Luongo, we saw that

21:53

coming for a long time. In fact,

21:55

came much after we expected, right,

21:57

after the Corey Schneider trade. We knew

21:59

that was going to be the

22:01

case. A dalliance, a failed dalliance

22:03

at the deadline that one year

22:05

in Toronto. But the next year, Roberto's

22:08

back off to Florida. We got

22:10

the sense with Beau Horvat too. during

22:12

that dreadful season a couple of

22:14

years back where it was clear the

22:16

Canucks were not going to the

22:18

playoffs and ultimately became clear that Canucks

22:20

management was going to choose to

22:22

re -sign J .T. Miller and trade. Captain

22:24

Bo Horvat saw the

22:27

incoming for Marcus Naslund back

22:29

in 07 -08, Jeff, and

22:31

finished his Canucks career

22:33

on the same night as

22:35

Trevor Linden. Saw the

22:37

incoming for Ryan Kessler as

22:39

well, right? Knew that

22:41

that was going to be

22:43

resolved after his trade

22:45

requests. So, yeah, there's a

22:47

history, there's a lineage

22:49

of these sorts of moments

22:51

for the Vancouver Canucks,

22:53

their fans and signature and

22:55

legacy players. And I

22:58

see some fans were on

23:00

social last night planning

23:02

a thank you Besser chant

23:04

with six minutes left

23:06

is number six. left

23:08

in the third period. So

23:10

yeah, I would hope that the

23:12

crowd salutes him thoroughly tonight

23:14

and shows their appreciation for a

23:16

good player and by all

23:18

accounts, a good person who has

23:20

been here the last nine

23:22

years. It's funny because every

23:24

game takes on a life of its own.

23:26

Like I was thinking the other night, Quinn

23:28

Hughes matched Alex Edler. I mean,

23:30

that's a great accomplishment, but it happened

23:32

as an assist on the overtime winner.

23:35

And people are heading for the exit. It's like

23:37

there was no sort of moment there. I'm sure

23:39

it'll be reflected tonight. And I hope he adds to

23:41

it and gets the record tonight in regulation time

23:43

so that they can really give him his moment.

23:45

But it was just kind of funny the way

23:47

that it unfolded there the other night. Game

23:50

over. Record. Well, he's one point

23:52

away from setting it. 409 points. He's

23:54

tied with Alex Edler. One

23:58

more point moves him in a 14th place

24:00

all time in Canucks career scoring. As

24:02

this gentleman noted earlier in the

24:04

week, there's a little pressure to get

24:06

it done tonight because you want to

24:09

get it done at home, in

24:11

front of the home fans, and you

24:13

have no guarantees that you're going to

24:15

start at Rogers Arena next year when

24:17

the season begins. So we'll track and

24:19

see if Hughes can get his

24:21

record this evening. Other numbers we'll be

24:23

looking at for tonight. Jake

24:25

DeBrus came into training camp, one of

24:27

the great talkers in the National Hockey

24:29

League, and said his goal was to

24:32

get to 30 goals after signing the

24:34

big free agent offseason deal last year

24:36

and coming over from the Boston Bruins.

24:38

He is two goals away from 30.

24:41

He's two points away from 50

24:43

as well, Jake DeBrus. Connor

24:45

Garland's been sitting on 49 points here for if

24:47

you get one more chance, Connor Garland, to

24:49

get to 50. Of course, a couple of years

24:51

ago, he had the hat trick in game

24:53

82. So he's Mr. Game

24:55

82. I suspect Garland will get to

24:58

50 here this evening. One more goal

25:00

for Pugh Suter gets him to 25.

25:03

10 better than his career high. One

25:05

goal for Kiefer Sherwood gets

25:08

him to 20 and cements his

25:10

reputation as one of the

25:12

best free agent additions across the

25:14

league. And we're not expecting

25:16

a ton of intensity, and yet

25:18

any hits that he gets

25:20

tonight just... add to his already

25:22

record -setting total, so where will

25:25

he top out at season's

25:27

end? So we'll see if Kiefer

25:29

Sherwood's looking to deliver a

25:31

few more hits just to boost

25:33

the numbers. This is also

25:35

the final game for Vancouver Canucks

25:37

equipment manager Pat O 'Neill, or

25:39

Patty as everybody calls him,

25:41

45 years in the National Hockey

25:44

League. He joined the Canucks

25:46

in 1989. Later

25:49

in the program, we asked Frank

25:51

Corrado about Pat because one of

25:53

the very first people that new

25:56

Vancouver Canucks meet is Pat O

25:58

'Neill as he gets them sorted

26:00

with their gear and their sweater

26:02

and their sweater number. So he

26:04

has been on the front lines

26:06

for the Vancouver Canucks in terms

26:08

of supporting. There are players

26:10

over the years. He's an absolutely

26:12

fabulous guy, Jeff. I know you've

26:15

spent a lot of time at

26:17

Rogers. Understated guy, but... Not a

26:19

bad word. No, a true gentleman.

26:21

Did you see he did the...

26:24

saw that he did with Murph.

26:26

He didn't get a police escort,

26:28

but man, because he was working

26:30

the bench, they had an execution

26:32

plan in place to get Pat

26:34

O 'Neill from the bench upstairs to

26:36

the broadcast area where Dan Murphy

26:38

spent the intermission with him. was

26:40

just kind of funny. I overheard

26:42

them laying out all their sort

26:44

of plans to make sure that

26:46

it all went off without a

26:48

hitch. So, yes, in game. Doing

26:50

an intermission interview. And I know

26:52

our friends at Yellow Dog, Mike

26:54

and Melinda Coghill, John Mayne, Brad

26:56

McDonald, Dan Cahill, and the whole

26:58

team there, they want to salute

27:00

and congratulate Patty as well. He's

27:02

a Port Moody resident. They see

27:05

him at the tasting room there

27:07

on Brewers Road as well as

27:09

up at St. James' Well there

27:11

in Port Moody where I've bumped

27:13

into Patty in the past. So

27:15

anyways, a hearty congratulations to one

27:17

of the... Fine gentleman in the

27:19

National Hockey League and with the

27:21

Vancouver Canucks organization for a career

27:23

well done. 36 seasons of service

27:25

to the team. Philip

27:27

Hino was skating in a

27:29

regular jersey this morning. Now,

27:31

we won't play tonight, but

27:33

we learned a little bit

27:35

more about his latest ailment

27:38

and setback. He not only

27:40

had his fifth career concussion. But

27:43

he had a virus that went

27:45

along with it, which compounded matters

27:47

there for a bit. But he's

27:49

emerged on the other side of

27:51

the virus. And Rick Tockett was

27:53

talking as though he avoided the

27:55

worst -case scenario on the concussion

27:57

side things. I still can't understand,

27:59

though. Like, one final morning skate,

28:01

just keep the non -contact jersey. Let

28:03

people out there know that. Don't

28:05

touch Philip. Exactly. Don't run into

28:07

Philip Eagle out there. But,

28:09

yeah, I mean, it sounds

28:11

promising. Proof will be in

28:13

the pudding when training camp rolls around

28:15

next year, but hopefully with the summer

28:17

to get away from the rink and

28:19

just heal up, rest up, and be

28:21

ready that there's still some good hockey

28:23

left in Filipino as a Vancouver Canuck.

28:25

I asked this of Blake Price and

28:27

Patrick Johnston last week. We're

28:30

going to have plenty of time

28:32

to discuss free agent and trade targets

28:35

and all of that, Jeff, but

28:37

the Canucks have been linked to Jack

28:39

Rosleving in the past. Having

28:41

a career year with the

28:44

Carolina Hurricanes, free agent to be,

28:46

former Winnipeg Jet and Columbus

28:48

Blue Jacket, who can play center.

28:53

Could you see a world where

28:55

they re -sign P .U. Suter, sign

28:58

Roslevic and free agency and

29:00

say, okay, that's that. We'll

29:03

keep Pettersson, one

29:05

of Hedel, Roslevic, Suter, whomever's going is

29:07

going to be our second line center.

29:09

One of the others is going to

29:11

be our third -line center. If

29:14

they're all healthy and going well,

29:16

Suter flips over and plays the wing.

29:18

We'll play Bluger at fourth -line center.

29:20

We'll play Ratu at fourth -line center.

29:22

Could you see a world where

29:24

re -signing Suter and adding Roslevic is

29:26

the totality of the plan at center

29:28

ice this summer? Yeah, I mean,

29:30

it doesn't scream Stanley Cup contender to

29:32

No, it doesn't. But as everybody

29:34

said, it's going to take a lot

29:36

to lure a John Tavares, a

29:38

Matt Duchesne, a Sam Bennett. So

29:41

if you strike out on those free

29:43

agents, then you're talking about a trade and

29:45

you're talking about parting with significant assets

29:47

if you're going to add the sort of

29:49

center that they require. Yeah, and then

29:51

all roads lead back to Elias Patterson stepping

29:53

up and being the player that he

29:55

has been in the past. And

29:57

organizationally, fingers crossed that he can be

29:59

again. You know, I wonder, and

30:02

I was asked about this in a

30:04

Canucks Army. article that I wrote

30:06

earlier in the week about who's most

30:08

likely to get traded in the

30:10

offseason. And I said, hey, I could

30:12

see Thatcher Demko getting moved. I'm

30:15

not sure how that goaltending dust

30:17

is all going to settle. I

30:19

could see them attaching Nils Hoaglander

30:21

to something to try to sweeten

30:23

the pot. And then I suggested

30:25

Teddy Bluger, who has been a

30:27

very good penalty killer, but five

30:29

on five, there just isn't much

30:31

there. You've got these young guys

30:33

pushing from below. in Atu

30:36

Ratu and Max Sasson and others. And

30:38

then as you talked about, you know, trying

30:40

to fill out the center ice position, I

30:42

wonder. I mean, you wouldn't get much for

30:44

him, but it's in terms of clearing out

30:46

space to allow some of those other guys

30:48

to step in. Outside of penalty killing, there

30:51

just hasn't been a whole lot of there

30:53

there. Right. If you feel your penalty killing

30:55

is good, then I can see it. I

30:57

mean, he's not fetching much. As you say,

30:59

it's more about clearing out space for Ratu.

31:02

And Sasson, but, you know, in terms

31:04

of the re -signing sooner and bringing

31:06

Ross Levick in, Blake

31:08

and I have been talking about this.

31:10

If you can't get quality, if

31:12

you can't get that perfect number two

31:14

center or even number one center,

31:16

if you're doubting Elias, then do you

31:18

just flood the position with volume

31:20

and hope the cream rises? And

31:23

ultimately, they may have no choice but

31:25

to attempt something like that. That's it. That's

31:27

it. If nobody's playing ball with you

31:29

on the trade market, look, second

31:31

-line centers are very rarely traded

31:33

to begin with, so there may

31:35

not be all that many available

31:37

via trade. And as we've talked

31:39

about, the free agent market has

31:42

some quality there, but can you

31:44

attract those players to an environment

31:46

that, let's face it, is... Not

31:48

a Stanley Cup. Players are not

31:50

going to view the Vancouver Canucks

31:52

as Stanley Cup contenders in the

31:54

here and now. And so to

31:56

get a guy like Tavares from

31:58

Toronto, who's been on a perennial

32:00

playoff team, probably their best season,

32:02

best chance in a while. Sam

32:04

Bennett, a cup champion who's been

32:06

to two straight finals. Matt Duchesne,

32:09

who's looking to end his career

32:11

by lifting a silver chalice. It's

32:13

going to take quite a sales pitch

32:15

to get one of those sorts of players.

32:18

in free agency. I do wonder. First

32:21

of all, you wait to see who flames

32:23

out in the first round of the playoffs

32:25

and then starts to reconsider the roster that

32:27

they've built. And just with these matchups, there

32:29

are going to be some good teams on

32:31

the outside looking in after Colorado or Dallas

32:33

is out in round one. And so Florida

32:35

and Tampa, I wonder with Florida, I mean,

32:37

there are a lot of people in hockey

32:39

that think Sam Bennett ultimately, they're going to

32:41

find a way to keep him there. But

32:44

will that mean that somebody

32:46

else shakes loose? off that roster.

32:48

Are you talking Lundell there? I

32:51

don't know. I mean, I'm sort of

32:53

spitballing, but I think these are some of

32:55

the avenues. You can look at who

32:57

are the pending unrestricted free agents, but ultimately

32:59

if a team that had expectations and

33:01

designs and going deep into the playoffs doesn't

33:04

get there with its current group, might

33:06

they look at shaking things up a little

33:08

and maybe that's where the Canucks have

33:10

to be ready to pounce? Yeah. In

33:12

terms of Florida, And

33:14

still a good amount

33:17

of cap space available there

33:19

for Sam Bennett. Not

33:21

a ton. Mackie Samoskevich has turned

33:23

into a good player this year. He's

33:25

an RFA, so he'll get a

33:28

raise. You know, looking

33:30

at the rest of the team,

33:32

Bobrovsky, the goaltender, is UFA. Anyways, we'll

33:34

see if Florida, and we'll talk

33:36

about that more during the summer, is

33:38

going to be able to keep

33:40

together a team that has gone to

33:42

two straight cup finals and may

33:44

very well make some noise here in

33:46

the Stanley Cup playoffs as well,

33:48

starting with a... A home state battle

33:50

against the Lightning. Looks like Kevin

33:52

Lankanen is going to start in goal

33:54

for the Vancouver Canucks this evening.

33:56

We knew that Thatcher Demko had been

33:59

shut down. Didn't think Nikita Tolapila

34:01

would get back -to -back starts. So for

34:03

Kevin Lankanen, who also one of

34:05

the great free agent signings of last

34:07

summer, this will be game number

34:09

51 for him. He has started at

34:11

48. This will be 49. He's

34:13

on 25 wins. Leads the league in...

34:16

Overtimer shootout losses with 10.

34:18

Trying to keep that

34:20

save percentage above 900. We

34:23

noted it in his last start. He

34:25

crept back up to 901, so wanted to

34:27

keep it there. 264 goals

34:29

against average. He's got four

34:31

shutouts this season. for

34:33

the Vancouver Canucks. Vegas dressed a

34:35

stripped -down lineup in Calgary last night

34:38

and still won the hockey game.

34:40

We're expecting a little bit beefier

34:42

from Vegas tonight. Have you got

34:44

wind? No, they're not scared because

34:46

it's back -to -back. They

34:49

didn't play Eichel, they didn't play

34:51

Stone, they didn't play Petrangelo or Hannafin

34:53

and Aiden Hill. You'd think that...

34:55

And they've got nothing to play for. So you

34:57

could understand if they wanted to arrest those guys,

34:59

but I also think... These guys want to gear

35:01

up and get ready for the playoffs. So

35:04

I would think a few of those

35:06

names probably play. Look at their history. Last

35:08

year, Jeff, they thought they could just

35:10

drop Mark Stone in the lineup for game

35:12

one. Everything would be tickety -boo, and they

35:14

wound up losing in the first round.

35:16

So, yeah, I expected a bit between the

35:18

teeth season for Vegas. They have delivered,

35:20

and I would think that Bruce Cassidy wants

35:22

this team hitting on cylinders going into

35:24

round. But we are putting you on ease

35:26

and nose because Vegas lost in a

35:28

shootout in Calgary last night. sorry. My bad.

35:32

Calgary lost out on its playoff spot, but

35:34

they did not lose the hockey game.

35:36

Look at those plucky flames go right down

35:38

to the shootout wire to win for

35:40

their home fans. But they knew after two

35:42

periods that they were cooked. Tyler Myers,

35:44

he will not play tonight. We knew that

35:46

earlier in the week when Rick Talkett

35:48

disclosed that there's just no sense in playing

35:51

a 35 -year -old veteran. So it'll be

35:53

7 -1 games and 24 points, playing 20

35:55

minutes and 48 seconds per night. For

35:57

the big defenseman and Kelowna

35:59

resident, Myers is the latest Canuck

36:02

to throw his support behind

36:04

Rick Tockett, telling Ben Kuzma of

36:06

the province, quote, my experience

36:08

with Tock has been unbelievable. We

36:10

have a great relationship. He

36:12

holds guys accountable, including myself. And

36:14

what I've really respected and

36:16

grown to learn more, even in

36:18

my later years, is the

36:21

feeling of never being satisfied. Had

36:23

heard in the past that

36:25

Tyler Myers talking to said

36:28

this is his best message

36:30

carrier, that he is the

36:32

guy that oftentimes takes what

36:34

the coach is saying and

36:36

either translates it or reinforces

36:38

it with his teammates. He

36:40

says he'll be back next

36:42

year with a no -move

36:44

clause. Last Tuesday, Yellow Dog

36:46

Brewing released their very first

36:48

large -format 15 -pack rescue lager. And

36:51

I sampled some of these last

36:53

night at the Nat at the

36:55

Seas Home Opener, Jeff, and they

36:57

get my full hearty review. Every

37:00

sip of this crisp and refreshing

37:02

brew contributes to Yellow Dog's passionate

37:04

partnership with the BC SPCA. Thank

37:07

you to Melinda who does

37:09

great work there for Yellow

37:11

Dog with the BC SPCA.

37:13

Together can help every animal

37:15

get the chance they deserve.

37:18

So cheers to Rescue Logger.

37:20

From Yellow Dog. There

37:24

is more shade, if

37:26

you will, being

37:28

distributed to Quinn Hughes. This

37:31

time from his peers. How

37:33

dare they? The NHL players

37:35

poll came out yesterday. And

37:37

as Noah Strang of the Daily

37:39

Hive notes, there is still a

37:41

pretty firm 1 -2 in the

37:44

eyes of players. McCarr got

37:46

nearly 72 % of the vote as

37:48

the best all -around defenseman, and he's having

37:50

a marvelous year and is a

37:52

sensational player. Don't get me wrong. I'm

37:54

filling out my Norris ballot this year,

37:56

and he's going to be my number

37:58

one. What I

38:00

don't get is Quinn just got

38:02

7 .44%. Yeah, that one jumped

38:05

off the page at me too.

38:07

And I guess I wonder, when

38:09

is the balloting done? And

38:12

is it based just on...

38:14

season, or is it a broader

38:16

brush who is the best

38:18

defenseman in hockey? Because Quinn's the

38:20

reigning Norris Trophy winner. Up

38:22

until Christmas and his injuries, he

38:24

wasn't just the frontrunner to

38:26

defend his Norris, he was getting

38:28

legit love for the heart

38:31

conversation at the very least. So,

38:33

you know, if this poll is done earlier

38:35

in the season, I'm thinking it's way

38:37

closer to 50 -50. Well, it's a big

38:40

group to, yeah. And

38:42

understand, Players

38:44

vote out of

38:46

loyalty. They vote for

38:48

friends. They vote for teammates. They vote for

38:50

ex -teammates. I'm sure there's a huge group

38:52

that probably aren't going to look at

38:54

their ballot, right? And they vote in consensus,

38:56

too. They just vote reputationally sometimes as

38:59

well. Here's

39:01

what I would say. I

39:03

love this for Quinn Hughes. That's

39:06

more logs on the fire.

39:08

Yeah, for summer motivation. Okay,

39:10

fellas, 7 .5%. Nearly

39:12

one -tenth the votes of Cale

39:14

McCarr. Okay, I'll show you

39:16

next year. We

39:19

know he's going to have a

39:21

big summer with his brothers and his

39:23

dad. The good news

39:25

is already noted for the

39:27

Canucks is they will not

39:29

suffer the indignity of being

39:31

the only Canadian franchise to

39:33

miss the playoffs this season.

39:35

Calgary will join them in

39:37

the holiday club, which starts

39:39

Thursday. And

39:42

we have all our first

39:44

-round playoff series set, all

39:46

but one where we await

39:48

the final playoff team in

39:50

the East between Montreal and

39:52

Columbus to face the Washington

39:54

Capitals. But we know we're

39:56

going to see the Battle

39:58

of Ontario, the Leafs and

40:00

Senators. They played three times,

40:03

three straight years from 2000

40:05

to 2002, and then again. Two

40:07

years later, the Leafs

40:10

have won every single playoff

40:12

series against their provincial

40:14

baby brothers. Colorado

40:16

and Dallas, big boy

40:18

hockey, a function of

40:20

this playoff, divisional playoff

40:23

format. Winnipeg, you'll see if

40:25

they can get rid of their

40:27

playoff bugaboos, particularly Connor Hellebuck against

40:29

a... -charging St. Louis team in

40:31

the second half. L .A. and Edmonton,

40:33

the fourth consecutive time. This has

40:35

gone from a 7 -6 to

40:37

5 -game series, all of them in

40:39

Edmonton's favor. Can they pull it

40:41

off for a fourth straight year

40:43

against the Kings, who have home

40:45

ice? Vegas and

40:47

Minnesota, Jersey and Carolina, we've known

40:49

that for a while, and the Battle of

40:51

Florida. Which one stands out to you? Oh,

40:53

I think the Battle of Ontario. Kind

40:55

of cool that Travis Green, who was a

40:57

Toronto Maple Leaf and has been part of those

41:00

battles as a player, now behind the bench.

41:02

So good for him and Nolan Baumgartner and Mike

41:04

Yeo. The

41:06

Battle of Florida is pretty compelling too.

41:08

I mean, those are two heavyweights that know

41:10

how to win and only one can

41:12

emerge from this series. I'm

41:14

looking forward to that one. Bottoms falling

41:16

out for Dallas at the wrong

41:19

time. Can they fix it? And Nathan

41:21

McKinnon, I'm looking forward to seeing

41:23

what he can do when things ramp

41:25

up here in the playoffs. You

41:27

mentioned the past. The Jets just look

41:29

motivated. Connor Hellebach just looks so

41:31

dialed in. But you win the

41:33

President's Trophy and your reward is facing

41:35

the hottest team in hockey in the

41:37

St. Louis Blues. So certainly something to

41:39

watch there. And I like the fact

41:41

that that L .A. Edmonton, like... Four

41:43

years in a row, and you think,

41:45

okay, maybe that's a little – there's

41:47

some spice there. It got a little

41:49

feisty the other night, and that was

41:51

clearly just setting the groundwork for a

41:53

matchup. And I don't know if people

41:55

Philip Deneau charged the Oilers for dressing

41:57

their B -side and trying to hurt them.

42:01

And I saw Corey Perry, no surprise, and

42:03

you know he's going to be in

42:05

the middle of things. But I don't know

42:07

if the casual fans are aware. The

42:09

Los Angeles Kings have lost five games in

42:11

regulation on home ice all night. have

42:13

been extraordinarily defensively. They prevent rush

42:16

chances. They've gotten goaltending this year.

42:18

They're not the high -scoring team.

42:20

They don't have a great power

42:22

play. So can they neutralize? McDavid

42:24

and Dreisaitl, that's always the question.

42:26

But you start at home, and

42:28

then you get a game seven

42:31

if necessary. Like, home ice

42:33

has to matter. You play all season

42:35

that well at Crypto.com, it has to

42:37

matter. I think they get it right

42:39

this time. And I think after getting

42:41

to game seven of the Stanley Cup

42:43

final, I think the Oilers are going

42:45

to be out. I'm with you. I'm

42:47

with you. I also, I really like

42:49

Steve Valleket, the former NHL goaltender and

42:51

the head there of Clearside Analytics. You'll

42:53

hear Kevin Woodley often citing those stats. I

42:56

hear Valleket on the

42:58

Kiprio show, and one of

43:01

the things he talks

43:03

about is rush chances. that

43:06

if you're looking for teams

43:08

that do well in the Stanley

43:10

Cup playoffs, it is teams

43:12

that improve in terms of defending

43:14

the rush year to year.

43:16

And if you're looking for upset

43:18

potential, look for teams that

43:20

don't do very well against the

43:22

rush. Edmonton is one

43:24

of those teams that doesn't do

43:26

very well defending the rush, and

43:28

particularly in conjunction with their goaltender,

43:30

Stuart Skinner, who is not particularly

43:32

great. against the rush. So

43:34

I think absolutely Edmonton is poised to

43:37

be upset there. And then you've

43:39

got a hell of a question with

43:41

Connor McDavid coming, right?

43:43

Because is he going to stick

43:45

around and continue to try and

43:47

try and try with this group,

43:49

Leon Dreisaitl? And let's face it,

43:51

an ownership and a management team

43:54

that has let them down in

43:56

terms of not being able to

43:58

fortify and get to a better

44:00

place on goal prevention. over the

44:02

years. And the story none of

44:04

us saw coming, Matt. Andre

44:06

Kuzmenko playing Stanley Cup playoff hockey. He's

44:08

been good for the Kings. He's got

44:11

17 points in 21 games. He's exactly

44:13

what they need. Basically, a power play

44:15

specialist. They don't have a lot of

44:17

offense in the quiver. He's one guy

44:19

that in the half court, as we

44:21

saw here during his 39 -goal season,

44:24

Jeff was tremendous. Playoff

44:26

hockey's different. Yeah, very much so. Very much

44:28

so. But he's going to the postseason

44:30

for the first time. Also,

44:32

we should mention that Winnipeg -St. Louis,

44:34

that's Shen versus Shen. Brayden

44:36

versus Luke. I saw Cervelli

44:38

did a piece on that,

44:40

and Brayden predicted that Luke

44:42

would cut off all communication

44:44

during the series with his

44:46

brother. So looking forward to

44:48

the Stanley Cup. Playoff season's

44:50

ending everywhere. As Dave Hall notes,

44:52

the Kalamazoo Wings, the Canucks ECHL franchise,

44:54

they're done for the year. The

44:56

success stories there this year, Josh Bloom,

44:58

you'll remember they acquired him from

45:00

the Buffalo Sabres, a 39 -point in

45:02

43 -game season. And the goaltender, Ty

45:04

Young, who we've talked about several times

45:06

during the course of the year,

45:09

we were wondering, you know, what's Young

45:11

like? He lost his job in

45:13

Prince George to a 17 -year -old. Darn

45:15

good 17 -year -old, though, in Joshua

45:17

Ravensburgen. Debuted in

45:19

pro hockey, played in the ECHL,

45:21

played in the AHL. As

45:23

Dave Hall notes, one of, if

45:25

not the best, U22 goaltender

45:27

in that loop, a 926 save

45:29

percentage in 22 games. And

45:32

Abbotsford, their final stretch here in

45:34

the AHL regular season. They're

45:36

in Bakersfield tonight. They are tied

45:38

for second place in the

45:40

Pacific Division with Ontario on 86

45:42

points. They need to sweep

45:44

these three remaining games, Bakersfield, Coachella,

45:47

and then Ontario. and have Colorado

45:49

lose their three remaining games to

45:51

gain top spot in the division

45:53

in a first round bye. So unlikely

45:55

that Abbotsford is going to get

45:57

to those heights, which means they

45:59

will play in the first round

46:02

and will play in the first

46:04

round with home ice advantage. So

46:06

we'll look forward to seeing the HL

46:08

sort itself out and following the

46:10

baby Canucks and head coach Manny

46:12

Malhotra. in their Calder

46:14

Cup playoff run. Let's get to

46:16

today's menu. It is brought to

46:18

you by Greta, a fantastic spot

46:20

46:22

46:26

46:28

Check out the great street food

46:30

menu. Try the smash burger and

46:32

the poutine. The arcade that encircles

46:34

the bar and all the sounds

46:36

of glee that surround you. 50

46:39

West Cordova. Greta Bar, let

46:41

the games begin. We'll be joined

46:43

by Frank Corrado coming up here

46:45

in moments. We talk about the

46:47

Canucks asking Elias Pettersson to

46:49

train here in Vancouver. Frank will

46:51

tell you why he thinks that's

46:53

a bad idea. And then Lawrence

46:56

Gilman will give us some insight

46:58

in terms of how you

47:00

handle a situation like this when

47:02

you're a front office and have

47:04

to go out and face the

47:06

music for needless to say.

47:08

A disappointing season. All

47:10

right, time for our Bet365

47:12

bets of the day. Wound

47:16

up getting the win. last

47:19

night taking Calgary over Vegas, and you

47:21

had... The Ducks, and they looked like they

47:23

were, I mean, good for Minnesota. Two

47:26

third -period comebacks here in the last couple

47:28

of games, winning overtime. We didn't talk about

47:30

it, but how about Marc -Andre Fleury getting

47:32

the opportunity to get in there. Nice

47:34

work on the part of John Hines in

47:36

the wild. Absolutely. Got

47:39

to overtime and made a goaltending change so

47:41

that Marc -Andre Fleury could have a final bow. before

47:43

the home public in Minnesota. So

47:45

I'm going back to the same

47:48

format that I wrote successfully yesterday,

47:50

and that is the Carolina Hurricanes

47:52

are dressing a stripped -down lineup

47:54

against the Montreal Canadiens tonight. Carolina

47:56

already locked into playoff position. Montreal

47:58

needs a point to clinch a

48:00

playoff spot, or they're in peril

48:03

of getting jumped by the hard -charging

48:05

Columbus Blue Jackets, who have won

48:07

five in a row. I'm

48:09

going to take Montreal against

48:11

the weaker... Lineup

48:13

being dressed by Rod Brindamore.

48:15

Take the Canadians at minus 135.

48:18

I'm going individual here, and I want to

48:21

see it, so I hope it happens.

48:23

Quinn Hughes gets the point that he needs

48:25

to become the all -time scoring leader among

48:27

Canucks defenders, but there's not a lot

48:29

of value in one assist for Quinn Hughes.

48:31

I mean, he gets out of his

48:33

sleep. So I think a hard -charging Quinn

48:36

Hughes, leading by example, game 82, give the

48:38

fans something to think about, and remember

48:40

the season on a positive note. I'm

48:42

taking them to get two assists in this hockey

48:44

game. Again, we don't know who the Vegas Golden

48:46

Knights are playing. They may grab defensemen off the

48:48

street here to round out their lineup in game

48:50

82. Two assists for

48:52

Quinn Hughes. Pays out at

48:54

plus 330. Breaking news coming

49:32

24 hours to sell his

49:34

49:36

He goes to carvana.com.

49:39

What is this? A movie trailer?

49:41

He ignores the doubters, enters

49:43

his license plate. Wow, that's

49:45

51:49

Got J -Pat for you today, Frank.

51:51

Hey, Frank. What's going on, fellas? How

51:53

we doing? We're all just playing out

51:55

the string. We're playing out the string

51:58

here, Frank. More

52:00

on that in a second. But

52:02

first. You caught our

52:04

interview with Cam Robinson yesterday on

52:06

the topic of Elias Pettersson and

52:08

the organization's preference that he stay

52:10

here in Vancouver and train under

52:12

their watchful eye this summer, take

52:15

advantage of the resources that they

52:17

have available to him. This is

52:19

as Patrick Alvin lays it out.

52:21

Your thoughts on that? Cam

52:24

said he should not stay in

52:26

Vancouver. I agree with Cam. He should

52:28

not stay in Vancouver. He should

52:30

get as far away from Vancouver, not

52:32

as far away as possible, but

52:34

he can't go the whole summer looking

52:36

at the same four walls at

52:38

the game rink and be in Vancouver.

52:40

He has to get out of

52:42

that environment. Not that Vancouver is a

52:44

toxic place or anything like that.

52:46

Vancouver is beautiful. It's lovely in the

52:48

summer. It's lovely all

52:51

the time for that matter. But

52:53

he needs to just remove

52:55

himself from the environment. And

52:57

I think what he needs to do, like

52:59

Cam was talking about training with Hughes, that's

53:01

fine. Rent a

53:03

house in Aurora, Ontario and go

53:05

train with Gary Roberts and go be

53:07

around Connor and Leon and all

53:09

those guys. And look what Gabe Landeskog

53:11

is doing now coming back from

53:13

his injury that no one thought he

53:15

was going to play ever again.

53:17

That's where a guy like Elias Pettersson

53:19

needs to be in that training

53:21

group every single day. He's removed out

53:23

of the city in Vancouver. You

53:26

want to talk about resources?

53:28

That's where the resources are.

53:30

And he is not under

53:32

team pressure when he's there.

53:34

He's doing what's right for

53:36

himself with the people that

53:38

are the best in the

53:40

world at what they do.

53:42

So I think that's the

53:44

play for him. Stockholm, I

53:46

don't know. You're

53:48

far away. You're removed from it. Sure.

53:51

I'm sure there's great training groups

53:53

that happen there. Like

53:55

if I'm Vancouver, I'm saying you

53:57

don't have to be here, but at

53:59

least go to Gary and be

54:01

there and be around those guys and

54:03

take advantage of those resources, like

54:05

really make the investment in yourself. And

54:07

I think that goes a long

54:09

way. So you think it can adversely

54:11

affect him because not enough of

54:13

a change, it will feel like a

54:15

continuum. It will feel like things

54:17

are continuing for him. And I did

54:19

the train in Vancouver for like

54:21

a half summer thing. You're

54:25

doing, it almost feels like you're

54:27

just doing like the season type workouts

54:29

in the off season. And then

54:31

once training camp hits, it's like, well,

54:33

there's no, it's like, there's no

54:35

grand finale to your summer training into

54:37

your training camp. You know, it's

54:39

a weird, it's weird. Some guys like

54:41

it. Some guys thrive on it.

54:43

I said to myself, like after that,

54:45

I think I need to just

54:47

not be at the team facility going

54:49

forward when it comes to summer

54:52

training. But yeah, I think. the

54:54

best thing for him is go

54:56

make the investment with the best players

54:58

in the world. Don't worry about

55:00

being around the team facility. A dumbbell

55:02

is a dumbbell at the end

55:04

of the day, but you can't replace

55:07

being around the best players in

55:09

the world and the guys that are

55:11

preparing themselves the best in the

55:13

world. And I think that's the investment

55:15

that a guy like that needs

55:17

to make, especially if we're still talking

55:19

about tendinitis or whatever's bothering him.

55:21

Well, go see Gary Roberts. Go be

55:23

a part of that. What

55:26

does it say to you, Frank,

55:28

that the organization wants to monitor his

55:30

summer training? It tells me they

55:32

don't trust him. They don't trust that

55:34

he can take full autonomy over

55:36

his summer training and push himself as

55:38

hard as he needs to be

55:40

pushed and perhaps do the right thing.

55:42

You're never going to be able

55:44

to control someone completely away from the

55:46

rink, but I feel like... having

55:48

him in their environment would feel more

55:50

comfortable for them, but it's not

55:53

going to be as beneficial to the

55:55

player. So while they might think

55:57

it's comfortable, maybe it's actually too comfortable

55:59

for the player. He's not pushing

56:01

himself out of his own comfort zone.

56:03

He's not learning anything new. He's

56:05

not taking his summer training to a

56:07

different place where it's never been

56:09

before. Guys talk about that all the

56:11

time, right? They make a change

56:13

in the summer and they go somewhere

56:15

else and they say, this

56:17

was the best summer I ever had.

56:19

I took my body to heights

56:21

that I never thought possible. And then

56:24

they can have great seasons. I

56:26

think that's the type

56:28

of mindset and investment

56:30

Pedersen needs to have

56:33

this offseason. And

56:35

I just think you are who

56:37

you're surrounded by at times. And if

56:39

he's just in a gym there

56:41

by himself in Vancouver, or if there's

56:43

a small group of guys kicking

56:46

around... hard to create the environment that

56:48

he would get being around the

56:50

most elite players in the game and

56:52

what they do every single summer.

56:54

And I think it would be quite

56:56

an eye -opening experience for him to

56:58

get there and see it and

57:00

do it. Frank,

57:03

he's a 26 -year -old guy with all

57:05

the money in the world. It seems crazy

57:07

to think that he's not going to

57:09

be given some liberty to go and... his

57:11

life for a little while here in

57:13

the early going. I'm just curious in your

57:15

mind and maybe from your playing days,

57:17

how did you approach the offseason? When did

57:20

you get back on the ice? How

57:22

much of the offseason for you was the

57:24

work you did in the gym as

57:26

opposed to trying to ramp things up to

57:28

be ready for the start of a

57:30

new season? My offseasons were different than guys

57:32

that were truly established. I always felt

57:34

like I couldn't take too much time off

57:37

because I wanted to get... you know,

57:39

get some kind of advantage on my training.

57:41

Plus, I was always the kind of

57:43

guy, Jeff, that was, you know, six foot

57:45

one, 190, 195 pounds.

57:47

And in the exit meeting, it

57:49

was always, okay, bigger,

57:51

faster, stronger next year. So I would go

57:53

home and I say, well, I already took

57:56

two weeks off. Did I get any bigger?

57:58

Maybe in the wrong way. Did I get

58:00

any faster? Did I get any stronger? No.

58:02

Okay. So it's like, I got to get

58:04

going here. Like I'm in, you know, hashtag

58:06

bulking season for lack of a better term. But,

58:09

you know, I think for, and it

58:11

depends on what you've been through, you

58:14

know, in your season. Like if you're

58:16

still nursing something, well, then now there's

58:18

a rehab component. to your off -season

58:20

before you really get into moving the

58:22

needle. So that needs to be taken

58:24

into account. So if you think you're

58:26

going to do the old, going to

58:28

take a month off, don't even look

58:30

at anything, and then get back into

58:32

it, well, you probably can't do that.

58:35

You have to slowly ramp up and

58:37

start your rehab and do your treatments

58:39

and then work yourself into an off -season,

58:41

and that makes your off -season longer. But

58:44

I think if you're looking at

58:46

it as a one -size -fits -all...

58:48

basically. This would be your token

58:50

model. It's like you take three,

58:52

depending on how far you go

58:54

in the playoffs, let's say you

58:56

miss the playoffs, you're taking three,

58:58

three and a half, maybe four

59:00

weeks off. Then you start your

59:02

stage one of things where you

59:04

start ramping up, get moving again. Then

59:07

you get into your

59:09

heavier portion of the summer

59:11

before skating really ramps

59:13

up. And then once you hit the

59:15

ice, you know, you're not necessarily lifting as heavy

59:17

because you're mixing in your ice. And then you

59:19

start, you know, two, three days a week, then

59:21

four days a week, five days a week. By

59:23

the time you hit the end of August, you

59:25

should feel like you're basically ready to go. Like,

59:27

I always wanted to feel like I was ready

59:29

for camp on Labor Day, even though we still

59:32

had two weeks to play or sorry, two weeks

59:34

to train. But it really

59:36

it varies on on everyone's situation. It's

59:38

not like a one size fits all

59:40

thing. And I think that brings us

59:42

back to Pedersen. You know, where

59:44

you go to someone like Gary, I'm

59:46

just using his as an example, because

59:48

all the best guys go there and

59:50

it's, you know, kind of become world

59:52

renowned. But you go there and he's

59:54

going to lay out a plan for

59:56

you that is different than what the

59:59

Canucks might lay out, might be better,

1:00:01

probably is better. And then he's going

1:00:03

to lay out a plan that is

1:00:05

different than what Connor's doing, what Leon's

1:00:07

doing, what Darnell Nurse is doing, what

1:00:09

Landeskog is doing. And it's like, this

1:00:11

is to get Elias Pettersson. the best

1:00:13

version of him before training camp. And

1:00:15

I think that's important for him to

1:00:17

have that tailor -made thing by the

1:00:19

best people in the world where he

1:00:21

might not know. He might not

1:00:23

know exactly what he needs. He doesn't know

1:00:25

how many weeks he should take off. He

1:00:27

doesn't know when phase one turns into phase

1:00:29

two. He might have a general idea based

1:00:31

on what he's done, but at least you're

1:00:34

going to get the answer. And it's probably

1:00:36

going to be the right answer if you

1:00:38

go to a place like that. We're

1:00:41

expecting an emotional night

1:00:44

for Brock Besser tonight at

1:00:46

Rogers Arena. Has been

1:00:48

here nine seasons, 554 games,

1:00:50

29 more in the postseason for

1:00:52

the Vancouver Canucks. Been a

1:00:54

career Canuck and was really the

1:00:56

first vestige of hope that

1:00:58

the Canucks might be able to

1:01:00

turn it around with a

1:01:02

young core coming out of... coming

1:01:04

out of North Dakota. What's

1:01:06

it like in the room and

1:01:08

on the bench when you

1:01:10

know that there's a heavy game

1:01:12

and potentially some pretty special

1:01:14

crowd reactions coming for one of

1:01:16

your teammates? That's an interesting

1:01:18

one. I never played on, I

1:01:20

never had a teammate that

1:01:22

was going through that, but I

1:01:24

played in the Ryan Smith

1:01:26

last game, which I kind of

1:01:28

saw went places on Twitter,

1:01:30

which I appreciated in a sarcastic

1:01:32

way. Because I told

1:01:35

him when I met him, I was

1:01:37

10 years old playing at the brick

1:01:39

tournament. I don't know why

1:01:41

I felt compelled to tell him that as I

1:01:43

was shaking his hand. I'm sure he couldn't

1:01:45

care less, but I was like, I don't know.

1:01:47

I'm just going to tell him I met

1:01:49

him when I was 10 at this Italian restaurant

1:01:51

in Edmonton called Sorrentino's because he walked in

1:01:53

and he ordered a bunch of pizzas and we

1:01:55

were all sitting there and we're 10 and

1:01:58

we're like, holy, that's Ryan Smith. Anyways, and I

1:02:00

got chirped so hard for that. You would

1:02:02

have think like I personally offended. various

1:02:04

people by how hard I got

1:02:07

chirped for that. Who chirped you? Everyone.

1:02:10

Literally everyone. Anyways,

1:02:14

but I do remember that game. I remember the

1:02:16

lead up to that game, like the crowd

1:02:18

reaction every time he stepped onto the ice, every

1:02:20

time he touched the puck, like you could

1:02:22

hear there was a rise in the crowd. And

1:02:24

the ovation that he got at the

1:02:27

end of the game was pretty amazing to

1:02:29

see, even from a visitor's point of

1:02:31

view. So it's rare. that we get games

1:02:33

like this. It's, it's somewhat unique. Um,

1:02:35

you know, I, I don't, I don't necessarily

1:02:37

like Ryan Smith was captain Canada, you

1:02:39

know, like that, that was, that was on

1:02:42

a different level, but I think like

1:02:44

the Vancouver fans are very appreciative of the

1:02:46

players and very appreciative of a guy

1:02:48

like Brock Besser and what he's done, what

1:02:50

he's meant here. And think about Besser's

1:02:52

journey, you know, like comes into the league.

1:02:55

kind of sets the league on fire

1:02:57

his first year. I remember him putting

1:02:59

a hat trick up on us when

1:03:01

I played for Pittsburgh on a Saturday

1:03:03

night. That was a big night. He

1:03:06

arrived right away and went through

1:03:08

a lot of hard times. Away

1:03:10

from the rink, there was some

1:03:13

sadness, some tragedy that followed him. And

1:03:15

he pushed through, and he was

1:03:17

very dedicated, and he was a great

1:03:19

Vancouver Canuck. And it is truly

1:03:21

a shame if this is it. the

1:03:24

way it's going to end. The

1:03:26

season the Canucks had, the way

1:03:28

the whole trade deadline kind of

1:03:30

shook out, the comments afterwards, you

1:03:32

know, about not getting good enough

1:03:34

offers. Brock Besser deserved

1:03:36

better than that, considering what he

1:03:38

put into this organization over his

1:03:41

time here. It's

1:03:43

an interesting dynamic because he's still under

1:03:45

contract. The organization hasn't come out and

1:03:47

said, we're not bringing him back. So

1:03:49

in the eyes of the Vancouver Canucks, I

1:03:52

don't think they're going to do anything to mark

1:03:54

the night. But I ask this question, Frank. Does

1:03:56

Rick Tockett have a role in this? And

1:03:58

what does it mean to a player

1:04:00

if Rick Tockett puts him out there

1:04:02

for the opening face -off so that

1:04:04

he gets to be announced one last

1:04:07

time as one of the starters for

1:04:09

the Vancouver Canucks? I think that's a

1:04:11

no -brainer. And Tockett, he's such a classy

1:04:13

guy. He gets it. He would understand

1:04:15

the whole dynamic. You know what I

1:04:17

mean? These types of

1:04:19

moments. they don't really

1:04:21

happen. Like they're, they're not commonplace

1:04:23

occurrences. So anytime he's, he's kind

1:04:25

of holding the keys really to,

1:04:27

you know, to how cool of

1:04:29

a moment this could be for

1:04:31

the fans and for Brock. So

1:04:33

it's a no brainer. I don't

1:04:35

think you would, you would even

1:04:38

think twice about it. Most in

1:04:40

it with the exception of Mike

1:04:42

Babcock and everyone remembers the Medano

1:04:44

story in Detroit. I think most

1:04:46

coaches get this. The occasional one,

1:04:48

I think, maybe needs some reminding from

1:04:50

somebody on the staff because they're

1:04:52

focused on something else. But I think

1:04:54

when brought to the attention of

1:04:56

a head coach, because they're fans just

1:04:58

like us, right? They understand the

1:05:00

dynamic between the... The players, the participants

1:05:02

on the ice. Come on, Matt.

1:05:04

You're coaching to win. You've got to

1:05:06

get the hard matchup right off

1:05:08

the opening face. 18 ,000 PSO. Remember,

1:05:10

Babs did it to Spezza, too. Spezza

1:05:12

came to play for the Leafs.

1:05:14

That's right. And his first game at

1:05:16

home, he helped me scratch them.

1:05:18

He had bought the suite. He had

1:05:20

hundreds of people at the game.

1:05:22

And I can't remember. Was it Drew

1:05:24

Shore, Devin Shore? One of the

1:05:26

Shores. He was like, need Shore in

1:05:28

the lineup because I need the

1:05:30

penalty killer. It's like, dude,

1:05:32

you got guys that can penalty kill,

1:05:34

man. But Kelly got crucified for

1:05:36

that, right, Frank? And he deserved to.

1:05:39

Exactly. So I think coaches are attuned to it

1:05:41

worth it? You think that was worth it

1:05:43

for him? exactly. Exactly. Come on.

1:05:46

I would think he not only opens the

1:05:48

game, but I would bet if there's a

1:05:50

face -off late in the game, Talkit sends him

1:05:52

out for that as well so that there

1:05:54

can be a moment. I totally agree. I

1:05:56

totally agree. And Brock Besser's been nothing but

1:05:58

a good soldier for the team. Let him

1:06:00

have his moment. Let the fans have their

1:06:02

moment. And there's just

1:06:04

nothing to gain from it. And how do

1:06:06

you feel afterwards if you take it away? Doesn't

1:06:09

that feel icky afterwards? Exactly. Who wants to live

1:06:11

with that? Besser strikes me as

1:06:13

the type of guy that, you know,

1:06:15

if you don't get along with Brock Besser,

1:06:17

it's probably because of the guy in

1:06:19

the mirror. Oh, and Besser's coming. When

1:06:22

he returns to Vancouver next year, he's

1:06:24

putting up a hat trick. First game.

1:06:27

Because that's what he does. Is there

1:06:29

any doubt? Especially against you and the

1:06:31

Penguins, Frankie. That's where he feasted. Oh,

1:06:33

dude. He saw me coming from a

1:06:35

mile away. Like, I see. I

1:06:37

went no bucket and warm up too.

1:06:39

And he's like, that guy is a

1:06:41

pigeon and I will be putting up

1:06:43

a hat trick tonight. But of course

1:06:45

the hat trick you mentioned there. And

1:06:47

it was on hockey night. I remember.

1:06:49

Matt Murray with the, he got lucky.

1:06:51

Oh, right. He got lucky. That's right.

1:06:53

Yes, Murr did say that. Who's lucky

1:06:55

now, Matt? Do

1:06:57

you have a Pat O 'Neill story?

1:07:00

It's Patty's last game here as well

1:07:02

as equipment manager. I just want to

1:07:04

say Patty is unbelievable. Like, what an

1:07:06

amazing guy. Treats everyone so well. Goes

1:07:08

the extra mile for all his guys. really

1:07:11

makes you feel comfortable around

1:07:13

the room, around the team. You

1:07:17

almost don't know what to

1:07:19

say about a guy like Patty,

1:07:21

but he was really tremendous.

1:07:23

Right from the moment you step

1:07:25

in as an 18 -year -old,

1:07:28

your first training camp always makes

1:07:30

you feel like you're welcome

1:07:32

and you belong and made it

1:07:34

feel special no matter how

1:07:36

long you were around. for

1:07:39

however long it was, if it

1:07:41

was just training camp or if it

1:07:43

was a little portion of the

1:07:45

regular season, you were an NHL -er.

1:07:48

And Patty really treated you that way.

1:07:50

And I have such an appreciation

1:07:52

for the time and the work that

1:07:54

he puts in and how he

1:07:56

treats everyone in such a first -class

1:07:58

way. Lastly

1:08:01

here, buddy, I'm going

1:08:03

to need you to explain

1:08:05

on behalf of your

1:08:07

NHLPA brethren

1:08:09

here. Quinn Hughes can

1:08:11

set the franchise mark, points by

1:08:13

a defenseman with a single point

1:08:15

tonight, breaking Edler's record. He's the

1:08:17

reigning Norris Trophy winner. We have

1:08:19

talked about it all season long,

1:08:22

how many players in the league,

1:08:24

if any, are more valuable to

1:08:26

their team than Quinn Hughes this

1:08:28

year. And yet

1:08:30

the players survey, 72 %

1:08:32

vote Kiel McCarr, the

1:08:34

best defenseman in the

1:08:36

league. Only 7 .5 %

1:08:39

vote for Quinn. Make

1:08:41

that make sense for

1:08:43

me, Frank. Okay.

1:08:45

The players poll is

1:08:47

a couple things. There's

1:08:49

some players who really care about it

1:08:51

and value it. There's some players that

1:08:53

it's just an obligation that they have

1:08:55

to fill it out. And there's probably

1:08:58

some players that don't even fill it

1:09:00

out because guys are just aloof and

1:09:02

don't care about certain things. I

1:09:04

think McCarr is going to win the

1:09:07

Norris. He's had an

1:09:09

unbelievable year, 30

1:09:11

goals. All that kind of speaks for

1:09:13

itself. I think if you look at

1:09:15

it, you say, well, Quinn

1:09:17

Hughes is second. He probably should

1:09:19

be second this year. It's just overwhelming

1:09:21

majority. voted for Cale McCarr. And

1:09:24

I think that's not a slight to

1:09:26

Quinn in any way, shape, or

1:09:28

form. That's just... Cale McCarr was a

1:09:30

dominant force this year. And Quinn

1:09:32

Hughes missed some time. So there's also

1:09:34

guys that may not have played

1:09:36

against him, depending on the way the

1:09:39

schedule shook out. And you

1:09:41

also have to keep in

1:09:43

mind with the player poll, there's

1:09:45

a lot of NHL players

1:09:47

that get deeply entrenched in opinions.

1:09:49

The goalie one is fascinating

1:09:52

for me. It's like... was

1:09:54

one. Shosturkin was two. Hellebuck was

1:09:56

three. Hellebuck's going to win

1:09:58

the Vesna, and he could win the

1:10:00

Hart. I wouldn't put it past the

1:10:02

voters. And it's like the players say

1:10:04

he's the third best goalie. Why? Well,

1:10:07

Vasilevsky, we know what he's about. Shosturkin,

1:10:09

we know what he's about. I mean,

1:10:11

you can get deeper into the technical

1:10:13

aspect of all three goaltenders. But

1:10:16

yeah, I think sometimes with this player

1:10:18

pool, there's just opinions that become... entrenched

1:10:20

i remember playing for toronto you guys

1:10:22

watch the office right you know the

1:10:24

show the office they had that debate

1:10:27

on whether hillary swank was hot or

1:10:29

not do you remember this and we

1:10:31

had it was i think the 15

1:10:33

-16 season we had a debate um

1:10:35

if you were picking first overall again

1:10:37

who would you have chosen mckinnon or

1:10:39

barkov and like this was when mckinnon

1:10:41

was like hadn't really Like he hadn't

1:10:43

popped yet. He hadn't had the massive

1:10:45

year yet. And Barkov was really good,

1:10:48

like underrated at the time. It's like

1:10:50

half the team was McKinnon, half the

1:10:52

team was Barkov. And like the argument

1:10:54

would just kind of reignite at certain

1:10:56

portions of the season. And it's like

1:10:58

guys just got more and more entrenched

1:11:00

in their opinion. So, I mean, that's

1:11:02

part of the player poll, I guess. Yeah.

1:11:06

And of course, you know,

1:11:08

some voting for buddies, some

1:11:10

allegiance to teammates. past or

1:11:12

present. I get it. Frank

1:11:14

Marvelous stuff next week. We'll have the

1:11:16

Stanley Cup playoffs on and we'll have

1:11:19

heard from the Vancouver Canucks in postmortem.

1:12:39

with the Jets, Coyotes, and Leafs as

1:12:41

well, it's our friend Lauren Skillman. How

1:12:43

are you? I'm well, gentlemen. How are

1:12:45

you guys doing today? Yeah, very well.

1:12:47

We got J -Pad in here for

1:12:49

you today. I see, I see. Another

1:12:51

one from my past. Always a

1:12:53

little melancholy on that final day of

1:12:55

the regular season when you know that

1:12:58

16 other markets are going to be

1:13:00

enjoying playoff hockey and alas, none. None

1:13:02

here in Vancouver. Well, and you know

1:13:04

it from the front office, Lawrence. So

1:13:06

what's it like when you have a

1:13:08

tough season here in Vancouver? Well, at

1:13:10

the end of the season, it's, well,

1:13:12

I mean, I didn't experience that because

1:13:14

in every year I was with the

1:13:16

Canucks, we made the playoffs. They

1:13:19

didn't get, their drought didn't start

1:13:21

till after I left. In

1:13:24

any event. Very good. In

1:13:27

any event, I have been. Pretty

1:13:29

good flex there from LG. Well, have

1:13:32

a little fun with it.

1:13:35

But believe me, I have experienced

1:13:37

my share of losing seasons

1:13:39

and not making the playoffs in

1:13:41

the past prior to my

1:13:43

experience with the Canucks. And to

1:13:45

put it bluntly, it sucks

1:13:47

on the last day of the

1:13:49

season knowing it's over. There's

1:13:52

also a little bit of relief

1:13:54

because to get to that point, it's

1:13:56

just such an emotional meat grinder. And

1:13:59

you don't

1:14:01

just... teams don't just fall

1:14:03

out of it at the end, which could

1:14:05

happen to the Montreal Canadiens tonight or tomorrow. But

1:14:08

you know, like you're on the Bataan

1:14:10

death march, as the expression goes. And

1:14:12

by the time the end comes, it

1:14:14

comes with an element of relief. But,

1:14:16

you know, obviously in Vancouver, there's no

1:14:18

joy in Mudville. Not for

1:14:20

the players, not for the coaches or management

1:14:22

ownership. Why should it be different for the

1:14:24

fans? You know, it sucks when

1:14:27

your team doesn't make the playoffs. How

1:14:31

should, you've been involved

1:14:34

in these discussions, how should

1:14:36

management approach this year -end

1:14:38

media availability? Well,

1:14:40

I mean, it's always best

1:14:42

to be forthright, candid,

1:14:44

honest, introspective.

1:14:48

Obviously, a lot of things that

1:14:50

went their way last year

1:14:52

did not go their way this

1:14:54

year, including significant injuries. to

1:14:57

significant players, and

1:14:59

it's appropriate for management

1:15:01

to acknowledge that

1:15:03

at some point when

1:15:05

they face the

1:15:07

music. I also think

1:15:09

they need to be candid

1:15:11

about performance from some players wasn't

1:15:13

what it was expected to

1:15:15

be. I mean, that's obvious. And,

1:15:18

you know, they have to come

1:15:20

up with some answers as to

1:15:22

what they intend to do going

1:15:24

forward. if they want

1:15:26

to have continued buy -in from their fan

1:15:28

base. So, I mean, there's

1:15:30

no sugarcoating it. It was a disappointing

1:15:32

year. They had injuries. They had

1:15:35

off -ice issues. All of that conspired

1:15:37

against the team. The question is only

1:15:39

partially, why did it go the

1:15:41

wrong way? But it also should be,

1:15:43

what are we going to do

1:15:45

to make it go the right way

1:15:47

in the future? How specific

1:15:49

does one get there, Lawrence?

1:15:52

Rutherford has not been shy about that

1:15:54

in the past. We don't think

1:15:56

he's going to be there Saturday. But

1:15:58

how specific do you get with

1:16:00

your off -season summer plans, your shopping

1:16:02

list, knowing that if you miss on

1:16:04

any topic, people are going to

1:16:06

bring it up come training camp? Well,

1:16:08

you have to understand your audience

1:16:10

and know that Vancouver is a very

1:16:12

educated, well -educated hockey market. They obviously

1:16:14

know what the shortcomings of the

1:16:16

team have been. They know that there

1:16:18

needs to be improvement down the

1:16:20

middle. And if that's not

1:16:22

stated as an objective for

1:16:24

the team going forward, it should

1:16:26

be. And you people, as

1:16:28

I like to say, looking at

1:16:30

you, J -Pat, will I'm certain

1:16:32

be asking that question or

1:16:34

questions along that line. I mean,

1:16:36

you're not going to show

1:16:38

all your cards, but I think

1:16:40

it's incumbent upon management to

1:16:43

at least... gives some indication that

1:16:45

they do have a plan

1:16:47

going forward. And again,

1:16:49

they need to have time to take stock, meet

1:16:51

with their people. There's a lot of time

1:16:53

between the free agency period and the draft and

1:16:55

all the things that are going to come

1:16:57

in the summer. But I think they need to

1:16:59

be candid and forthright with respect to, you

1:17:01

know, there are things that need to be fixed

1:17:03

here. We are the people to do it.

1:17:05

We know what needs to be done. Just

1:17:08

sharpening my knives here. I've got a

1:17:10

few days before we get the opportunity on

1:17:12

the weekend. Look, it's likely to be

1:17:14

a night of feels at the rink game

1:17:16

82. Sort of the

1:17:18

prevailing storyline is that this is it for

1:17:20

Brock Besser. End of the line, a

1:17:22

first round pick back in 2015 who gave

1:17:24

this organization 10 incredible years. The mileage

1:17:26

they got out of a guy taken deep

1:17:28

in the first round, over 500 games.

1:17:30

He's a top 10 goal scorer here. That

1:17:33

said, but... some ways, I mean,

1:17:35

Bo Horvath's already out the door.

1:17:37

Brock Besser likely to follow now.

1:17:40

These guys represent failed promise, ultimately. I

1:17:42

mean, this was a core group

1:17:44

that looked like it was destined to

1:17:46

do some incredible things, but it

1:17:49

is pro sports and there are no

1:17:51

guarantees. Well, no, there are no

1:17:53

guarantees. And 10 years is a pretty

1:17:55

good run for anyone in this

1:17:57

day and age with one franchise. And,

1:17:59

you know, in this business, the

1:18:01

only thing constant is change. And,

1:18:04

you know, and having said

1:18:06

that, I mean, the book hasn't been

1:18:08

sealed yet on what's going to happen with

1:18:10

Brock Besser. And it is possible, potentially,

1:18:12

that they do reach agreement, although it doesn't

1:18:14

look like it at this point. But

1:18:17

listen, some good players have passed through

1:18:19

that. If he leaves, I mean, some

1:18:21

good players will have passed through that

1:18:23

organization, particularly up front and down the

1:18:25

middle with Beau Horvath, JT Miller, and,

1:18:27

you know, Brock Besser, as I've said.

1:18:29

You know, not a 40 goal scorer, but

1:18:32

a guy who scored 40 goals. And

1:18:34

along the way, it was pretty consistently relied

1:18:36

upon to score 25 to 30. So

1:18:38

that's a lot of goals to have given

1:18:40

to an organization. And quite frankly, it's

1:18:42

a lot of goals to go out and

1:18:44

replace. And, you know, he's someone I

1:18:46

don't have a whole lot of, well, the

1:18:48

sum total of my experience with Brock

1:18:50

Besser was standing next to him in a

1:18:52

picture after we picked him in the

1:18:54

first draft because. I was voted off the

1:18:56

island or told my services are no

1:18:59

longer required five days after that draft. But

1:19:01

I watched him closely from

1:19:03

afar. He's comported himself with

1:19:06

dignity and grace and humility,

1:19:08

and he has been an

1:19:10

ultimate Canuck. He's

1:19:13

someone who, as an observer, has

1:19:15

looked like he's been very happy

1:19:17

to be a member of this

1:19:19

organization, a very strong person with

1:19:21

lots of character. And I

1:19:23

think the Canucks fans should be thankful that

1:19:25

they had the opportunity to have a player

1:19:27

with this amount of dignity and grace to

1:19:29

put, you know, 10 years into this organization. The

1:19:32

story is that the Canucks have

1:19:34

put an off route there and they've

1:19:36

got concern about term. And I

1:19:38

think the concern is foot speed as

1:19:40

he grows here. Do you think

1:19:42

he can do better in the open

1:19:44

market this summer than something like

1:19:46

eight by five? Yeah, he'll

1:19:49

get the term. In

1:19:51

my estimation, he'll get six or

1:19:53

seven in the open market. He might

1:19:55

not get seven, but he could

1:19:57

get six. And, you know, when

1:20:00

going back to my time with

1:20:02

the Canucks, we knew we had, in

1:20:04

Daniel and Henrik Sedin, we knew

1:20:07

we had two players who wanted to

1:20:09

stay with the organization and were

1:20:11

willing to take less at the time

1:20:13

to stay. And the conundrum that

1:20:15

we were faced was how hard could

1:20:17

we push? to

1:20:19

get them to leave some money

1:20:21

on the table without forcing them

1:20:24

to go to the market. And

1:20:26

I think there are similar attributes

1:20:28

to this negotiation. And, you

1:20:30

know, if you're sitting in Brock Besser's

1:20:32

shoes and you look at the

1:20:34

market that's out there, I mean, Mitch

1:20:36

Marner is obviously the prime, specifically

1:20:38

right winger, that's on the market. But

1:20:40

Brock Besser with 40 goals on

1:20:42

his resume and a perennial 25 to

1:20:44

30 goal scorer. is going to

1:20:46

get paid. And it will potentially be

1:20:48

an option where term is going

1:20:50

to be an insignificant component to that

1:20:52

negotiation. So, you know, could

1:20:54

they be pushing the envelope further than

1:20:56

they need to be? I don't know. I

1:20:58

mean, I'm not in the room. I

1:21:00

don't, you know, I watch Besser play from

1:21:02

afar and I have commented or pointed

1:21:05

out the deficiencies in his game, which are

1:21:07

not many, but their foot speed and

1:21:09

his ability to drive play. But you need

1:21:11

finishers in this game. And there's an

1:21:13

old adage, goal scorers get paid. Besides

1:21:16

the photo, take us back to

1:21:19

draft weekend in South Florida, Lawrence, and

1:21:21

your memories heading into that 2015

1:21:23

draft and the selection of Besser at

1:21:25

23rd overall. Well, he was definitely,

1:21:27

I said this before on the podcast

1:21:29

here, he was definitely the guy

1:21:31

that Jim Benning wanted. And I think

1:21:34

Jim deserves credit for that because

1:21:36

it was the right selection. And if

1:21:38

you recall, it wasn't clear that

1:21:40

he was going to be there because...

1:21:42

You know, we had, there were

1:21:44

a number of teams out there. He

1:21:46

was a very, you know, his

1:21:49

visibility level was high coming from the

1:21:51

University of North Dakota. And,

1:21:53

you know, Boston had the three

1:21:56

picks in front of us. And, you

1:21:58

know, they didn't go Boston's way. But

1:22:01

we thought actually that in

1:22:03

all likelihood, you know, Jim Benning

1:22:05

had some insight because he had come from the Boston

1:22:07

organization. We thought he

1:22:09

would be gone well before we picked. You

1:22:12

know, you hear the expression all the time.

1:22:14

We couldn't believe he was there. We were

1:22:16

happy to claim him. But in that case,

1:22:18

I can attest to the fact that he

1:22:20

was highly coveted by the organization and they

1:22:22

were. The organization was very happy that he

1:22:24

was available when they picked. Yep.

1:22:26

And I can remember Blake and I in

1:22:28

our broadcast location and Craig Button made a

1:22:30

beeline for us and went, guys, that's a

1:22:32

terrific pick by your team. He's going to

1:22:35

be a damn good NHLer. And boy, was

1:22:37

Craig right. As well. Moving

1:22:40

forward, but staying on the draft,

1:22:42

Lawrence, they are now almost certain to

1:22:44

pick 15th overall. Of course, there's

1:22:46

the 1 % chance they win one

1:22:48

of the lotteries and take the jump

1:22:50

up to number five. There's a

1:22:52

itty bitty percent chance that Calgary behind

1:22:54

them wins one of the lotteries

1:22:57

and they slide to 16, but almost

1:22:59

certain 98 % that they're going to

1:23:01

pick 15th overall. What

1:23:03

kind of currency? Is a pick

1:23:05

right in the middle of the

1:23:07

first round, particularly in a draft

1:23:09

that maybe isn't most enthusiastic in

1:23:11

the eyes of scouts? Well,

1:23:14

to begin with, picking at 15

1:23:16

is no man's land, right? Because you

1:23:18

don't have the benefit of at

1:23:20

least playoff revenue if you own the

1:23:22

team or you run the team

1:23:24

or the potential to maybe go on

1:23:26

a run. And if

1:23:28

you look at the analytics of the draft,

1:23:30

I mean, by far. the greatest players get picked

1:23:32

in the top seven or eight picks. So

1:23:34

it's, you know, are you going to get a

1:23:37

good player at 15 if you bake the

1:23:39

pick? Yes. But, you know,

1:23:41

and some very, very great players have been picked

1:23:43

in the latter half of the first round as they

1:23:45

have in all other rounds. But in

1:23:47

terms of your ability to move up,

1:23:49

you're kind of hampered unless you add

1:23:51

currency to your pick, right? And that

1:23:53

currency comes in the form of either

1:23:55

an additional draft pick, whether that's, let's

1:23:57

say, a second round pick in the

1:24:00

draft that you're in. or potentially a

1:24:02

first -round pick in another draft, or

1:24:04

you add some additional capital in the

1:24:06

form of a prospect, a young player.

1:24:08

Like if you want to move into

1:24:10

the top 10, and let's say hypothetically

1:24:12

they're having a little problem with Wielander

1:24:14

and they get a sniff that they're

1:24:17

not going to sign in the same

1:24:19

way Calgary knew with Adam Fox way

1:24:21

back in the day. Maybe you put

1:24:23

a player like that into the deal

1:24:25

and you can move up five, ten

1:24:27

spots, whatever the case may be. It's

1:24:29

not easy. I'll tell you, it's easier

1:24:31

to move down when you're in that

1:24:34

position. And it might be the more

1:24:36

prudent maneuver because many draft experts will

1:24:38

tell you it's about getting more swings

1:24:40

at the plate than it is about

1:24:42

where you pick. And some team

1:24:44

behind you may be sitting there like

1:24:46

Canucks were in 2015 where you are

1:24:48

coveting a player and you're eight spots

1:24:51

back. And you don't think that guy's

1:24:53

going to be there. And you are

1:24:55

willing to, you know, sweeten the pot

1:24:57

with a pick in the second round

1:24:59

or a prospect or whatever the case

1:25:01

may be in order to move up

1:25:03

and take that pick. So I can

1:25:05

see that scenario being a lot more

1:25:08

likely than moving up for the Canucks,

1:25:10

who I don't know that they're necessarily

1:25:12

giving prospects and draft picks away at

1:25:14

this point in their cycle. By

1:25:17

the time the draft rolls around, the

1:25:19

Canucks will be two months into their

1:25:21

offseason. One of the prevailing storylines out

1:25:23

here right now is Elias Pedersen's offseason

1:25:25

training. And I don't know if we

1:25:27

want to speak to him specifically or just

1:25:29

in generalities, but I'm curious with your

1:25:31

background, Lawrence, if you

1:25:33

can shed a little insight on how much

1:25:36

an organization can lean on players. to

1:25:38

tailor their offseason, how much they do, how

1:25:40

much control do you have over guys

1:25:42

you want to sort of keep under your

1:25:44

thumb to make sure that they show

1:25:46

up in training camp ready to hit the

1:25:48

ground running? Well, with a

1:25:51

veteran player, any veteran

1:25:53

player, you don't really have the ability

1:25:55

to say you need to have

1:25:57

yourself parked in Vancouver all year and

1:25:59

working out in our gym our

1:26:01

eyes with our people. But I think,

1:26:03

you know, there will be with

1:26:06

any player, and you can use Peders,

1:26:08

Pettersson is an example, a

1:26:10

candid and again forthright exchange between

1:26:12

the GM, coach, the player and

1:26:14

whoever else is going to be

1:26:16

in the room. And it's fair

1:26:18

ball for the team to say,

1:26:21

you know, this year didn't go

1:26:23

your way because we feel you

1:26:25

didn't put the effort in in

1:26:27

the offseason, if that is the

1:26:29

case. I'm speaking hypothetically here. And

1:26:31

John Shannon, I saw the other

1:26:33

day, spoke to this on this

1:26:35

very podcast. And I think he

1:26:37

was right. I think you look

1:26:39

the player in the eye. And,

1:26:41

you know, in the case of

1:26:43

Pedersen, he wants to be better.

1:26:45

He said that he's a proud

1:26:48

guy. And everybody should know that,

1:26:50

including, you know, him, the team,

1:26:52

the fans. And I believe he's

1:26:54

going to put the effort in in the offseason.

1:26:56

And he is going to come back in better

1:26:58

shape. And I believe he's going to have a

1:27:00

very, very productive year next year. Management

1:27:03

and coaching. I mean, it's always good to have

1:27:05

the coach in the room when you're talking to

1:27:07

a player, but lots of times the coach will

1:27:09

have one meeting with the player and the management

1:27:11

will have another one. But it's fair to look

1:27:14

them in the eye and say, this year didn't

1:27:16

go your way because of factors A, B, C,

1:27:18

and D. And if one of them is you

1:27:20

didn't put the effort in prior to come to

1:27:22

the season or didn't come in the proper shape,

1:27:24

we both know you need to do that in

1:27:26

order to be successful next year. Do

1:27:28

exit meetings ever go sideways? Oh,

1:27:31

yeah. For sure. I mean, you know,

1:27:33

when you have a player, I mean, look

1:27:35

at the New York Rangers. I can't

1:27:38

imagine Calvin DeHaan's going to be a very

1:27:40

happy exit interview between him and Peter

1:27:42

Laviolette or him and Chris Drury. I mean,

1:27:44

when you have disgruntled players who don't

1:27:46

feel that they were given a fair shake,

1:27:48

I've experienced that in my career. And

1:27:50

I've also looked players in the eye and

1:27:52

told them, you got exactly what you

1:27:54

deserved. And you can sit here

1:27:56

and be pissed off all you want, but

1:27:58

you didn't put the effort in. And

1:28:00

you weren't a complete player. And the coach...

1:28:02

you know, was right to not, you

1:28:04

know, be able to trust you, particularly in

1:28:07

the defensive zone. And I've had that

1:28:09

conversation with players many times. The key thing

1:28:11

is that you're on it. Players

1:28:13

are like everybody else. They just

1:28:15

want to be told the truth. And,

1:28:17

you know, there needs to be

1:28:19

good organizations have communication in it. Obviously,

1:28:21

if you're getting to that point and you

1:28:23

have that meeting and it doesn't go well,

1:28:26

something, you know, there's been

1:28:28

a disconnect somewhere because. A

1:28:30

player who's not happy, generally, in

1:28:32

my experience, is that

1:28:35

they'll let you know that. And there

1:28:37

are meetings that take place between

1:28:39

coaches and players and management players all

1:28:41

throughout the season. Is there a

1:28:43

Canucks exit meeting from your time here

1:28:45

that stands out, Lawrence? None

1:28:47

that I would disclose in this. Ah, statute

1:28:50

has not expired yet. I actually, to

1:28:52

be very candid with you, not that

1:28:54

I can really recall. None that stand

1:28:56

out. in my mind,

1:28:58

but I probably will end this

1:29:00

podcast and think about it. Okay.

1:29:02

No, I can't really think of

1:29:05

any. We

1:29:07

may come back to you on that. Lastly,

1:29:09

just based on what you said there

1:29:11

on Wielander, it sounds like the Canucks

1:29:13

are playing hardball on bonuses. The kid

1:29:15

went back to class. He's still not

1:29:17

yet signed, isn't going to get a

1:29:19

chance to play an NHL game. Would

1:29:21

you be at all chilled if you're in the

1:29:23

Canucks front office on this right now? I

1:29:27

always say if you're not in the

1:29:29

room or you're not in the conversations,

1:29:31

it's difficult to apply in it. I

1:29:33

don't know. I mean, clearly, as an

1:29:35

observer, it doesn't seem like this guy's

1:29:37

in any hurry to get to the

1:29:39

Canucks. Now, maybe that may be because

1:29:41

the team's not going to the playoffs

1:29:43

and he's thinking, what do I need

1:29:46

to rush there for? He

1:29:48

may like school. He may be happy

1:29:50

there. He may want to get

1:29:52

his degree. I don't know. But the

1:29:54

clock is, you know. The

1:29:56

indicators might not be great in

1:29:59

terms of, are we dealing with a

1:30:01

guy who doesn't want to come

1:30:03

here? My experience with Swedish players is

1:30:05

that they tend to love the

1:30:07

city of Vancouver and the organization. And

1:30:09

one can look at the immense

1:30:11

number of Swedes that have thrived in

1:30:13

Vancouver. So I'd be surprised if

1:30:15

he doesn't want to come. But

1:30:18

at some point, the clock will begin to tick

1:30:20

on this issue. Marvelous

1:30:22

stuff. Next week, we'll have

1:30:25

Stanley Cup playoff games going on, Lawrence. So we'll

1:30:27

discuss some of the first round series then.

1:30:29

1:34:09

Starter... Fernando Perez, he fought

Got a very nice ovation upon his

1:34:18

first plate appearance at Nat Bailey

right center field. The crack of

1:34:25

talent there. Incidentally,

glorious. Now you'll still see the

Bob Nightingale, sticking with

1:35:27

baseball of USA Today, reporting

1:35:29

the Mariners turned down

1:35:31

a trade for a young

1:35:33

infielder earlier this season.

1:35:35

The opposing team was seeking

1:35:37

Luis Castillo. They're fine.

1:35:39

Starting pitcher and their scuttlebutt

1:35:41

now that the M's,

1:35:43

after losing Ryan Bliss, losing

1:35:45

Victor Robles to long -term

1:35:48

injuries, are sniffing around

1:35:50

free agent JT Martinez, who's

1:35:52

been an effective hitter

1:35:54

over his career. The Masters.

1:35:56

The final round television

1:35:58

number is in, Jeff. 12

1:36:00

.7 million viewers on CBS.

1:36:02

It makes it the

1:36:04

most watched golf telecast. In

1:36:06

seven years. I know you're a

1:36:08

huge fan. What did you make of

1:36:10

Rory on Sunday? Loved it. Loved

1:36:12

every minute of it. It was the

1:36:14

full Rory experience for him to

1:36:17

flash a couple of wedges on 13

1:36:19

into the drink and then 18 with

1:36:21

the tournament on the line. And in

1:36:23

between the glorious iron shots that

1:36:25

he hit, that swooping. Seven iron on

1:36:27

15. On 15 and then 17 maybe.

1:36:29

The shot of his lifetime. To

1:36:31

two feet from 190 yards out. It

1:36:33

was amazing. Yeah. So, I mean, he's

1:36:35

incredible theater. As I said, it's the

1:36:37

full Rory experience and ultimately took

1:36:39

a little longer than he had probably

1:36:41

anticipated, both in time and in terms

1:36:44

of number of holes, but got

1:36:46

it done. And a reminder,

1:36:48

since golf season is now

1:36:50

fully underway, it's a game of

1:36:52

honor. You're out there for

1:36:54

a good time. Be respectful

1:36:56

to the course, to

1:36:59

your playing partners, and

1:37:01

the groups in front of.

1:37:04

And behind you. And

1:37:08

look, if you got a little

1:37:10

edge going on, take a shot

1:37:12

of bogey juice. Don't do what

1:37:14

happened at Two Eagles Golf Course

1:37:16

in West Kelowna earlier this week. Jeff,

1:37:19

there's video of it. We've got

1:37:21

it. I

1:37:24

have played Two

1:37:26

Eagles. A brawl breaks

1:37:28

out. Punches are

1:37:30

thrown. Cops are called.

1:37:35

Look, don't hit into the group in front

1:37:37

of you. But if someone

1:37:39

does hit into you, it

1:37:41

is probably accidental. I'm

1:37:43

sure one can

1:37:46

litigate this without

1:37:48

fisticuffs. I

1:37:50

think. Look at this. My sources

1:37:52

in West Kelowna telling me that

1:37:55

the fight actually was over the

1:37:57

final swig of bogey juice. There's

1:38:00

a little left in the bottle

1:38:02

there, and they all wanted in.

1:38:04

I was thinking to myself, like,

1:38:06

yeah, I mean, it's ridiculous. Yes.

1:38:10

But what do we think the scene was like on

1:38:12

the 19th hole when they both show up in

1:38:15

the parking lot? lot, yeah. Have

1:38:17

you ever seen a physical altercation on

1:38:19

the golf course? mean, I've seen guys

1:38:21

shout at guys driving it up. You

1:38:24

know, and look, if it happens once,

1:38:26

it's generally an accident. If it happens

1:38:28

a couple of times, then their civil

1:38:30

conversation is in order. Yeah. And I've

1:38:32

seen all of that. But, no, I've

1:38:34

never seen it come to blows, and

1:38:36

I've never seen a guy basically knocked

1:38:38

on his ass the way that the

1:38:41

big dude was in the video. Yeah.

1:38:43

Yeah. And now immortalized on

1:38:45

social media. Congratulations,

1:38:48

West Kelowna. Exactly. Went

1:38:50

to a BC Lions event

1:38:52

last night here at Goodco downtown.

1:38:54

Roar as one, the new

1:38:56

team slogan for 2025. Also a

1:38:58

slight alteration to the Lions

1:39:00

logo. Rob Williams going to talk

1:39:02

about that tomorrow. Single game

1:39:04

tickets on sale to the public

1:39:06

on May 1st. They announced

1:39:08

a bunch of theme nights surrounding

1:39:10

individual games this year. A

1:39:12

summer camp theme night as the

1:39:14

kids get out of school

1:39:16

on June 21st. Yeah, watermelon smash

1:39:18

for the riders visit. A

1:39:20

campus clash going into the school

1:39:22

year in September. And a

1:39:24

Wild West country night coming in

1:39:26

October. Of course, we await

1:39:28

the announcement of the big... Opening

1:39:31

night concert. That is for the

1:39:33

season and home opener Saturday, June

1:39:35

7th against the Edmonton Elks. And

1:39:37

team president Dwayne Veneau reporting an

1:39:39

average attendance last year of 28

1:39:41

,000 people. They opened the upper

1:39:43

deck in five of eight games. They

1:39:46

sold out the Lions and Langford

1:39:48

this preseason game at Starlight Stadium in

1:39:50

a matter of 12 minutes. 6 ,000

1:39:52

tickets sold. And spent some

1:39:54

time last night with new head coach Buck Pierce.

1:39:57

Great to see Buck back in black and

1:39:59

orange. He's telling me that

1:40:01

the kids are 10 and 7,

1:40:03

and so no real memories of

1:40:05

living here in Vancouver. So it's

1:40:07

all fresh for them. Discovery, wonderment.

1:40:09

He was beaming, smiles ear to

1:40:12

ear. Coming back to

1:40:14

the Lions Den as head coach. Also

1:40:16

spent some time with Sean White.

1:40:18

Heading into season number 17 for the

1:40:20

now legendary Lions kicker. Speaking of

1:40:22

legendary, I saw photos of the event.

1:40:25

Big Daddy was on I

1:40:27

spent some time with Big

1:40:29

Daddy Dave Pratt. As well,

1:40:31

who looks terrific. So thank

1:40:33

you to the Lions and

1:40:35

Matt Baker and everyone for

1:40:37

having us out. Vancouver Rise,

1:40:39

history being made tonight at

1:40:41

BC Place, everybody, as Vancouver

1:40:43

Rise FC and Calgary Wild

1:40:45

FC contest the first game

1:40:47

in the Northern Super League,

1:40:49

a domestic women's professional league

1:40:51

here in Canada with six

1:40:53

teams, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal,

1:40:55

Ottawa, and Halifax. They have

1:40:57

some pretty big name investors

1:40:59

who have gotten behind this

1:41:01

league. Christine Sinclair here with

1:41:03

the Vancouver Rise. Andre

1:41:05

de Grasse and Milos Raonic

1:41:07

for the Toronto franchise. Josh Morrissey,

1:41:10

Winnipeg Jets defenseman. Hometown Calgary,

1:41:12

he's a backer there. 25

1:41:14

games, 25 game schedules, 28

1:41:16

of the games will be

1:41:18

on television this year between

1:41:20

TSN and CBC. Congratulations to

1:41:22

former Canadian women's national team

1:41:24

member and co -founder of

1:41:26

the league, Diana Matheson. for

1:41:28

getting the Northern Super League

1:41:31

to this date. Congratulations

1:41:33

on getting to this point.

1:41:35

I hope it's a huge

1:41:38

success, long overdue. I don't

1:41:40

fully grasp why they scheduled

1:41:42

this up against a Vancouver

1:41:44

Canucks game, even if it

1:41:46

is game 82. It's

1:41:48

still 18 ,000 people that

1:41:50

you take out of the

1:41:53

potential ticket -buying group. Is it?

1:41:57

Maybe short of $18 ,000, but I hear what

1:41:59

you're saying, Jeff. The other thing is, and

1:42:01

look, I totally get it. Dress it up

1:42:03

for the first one at BC Place, but

1:42:05

we know that that's such a cavernous stadium.

1:42:08

If there isn't a bunch of people

1:42:10

on hand, we've seen BC Lions preseason

1:42:12

games there. We've seen high school football. Whitecaps.

1:42:15

Yeah, I hope that they get the crowd

1:42:17

they're looking for because, of course, after this

1:42:19

one, it's out to Swan for the rest

1:42:22

of the season. That's right. Maybe

1:42:25

building availability had something to

1:42:27

do with it. It's quite

1:42:29

possible. Anyways, congratulations to Diana

1:42:31

and to all these teams.

1:42:33

Best of luck to the

1:42:35

rise tonight against Calgary. Well,

1:42:37

how about this? For

1:42:40

the last two months, Wednesday

1:42:43

has been Blake's day to

1:42:45

peacock around the studio because

1:42:47

look at how great I

1:42:49

did in the safe way

1:42:51

my NHL picks. The

1:42:53

first week that he's not here

1:42:55

is the first week he has

1:42:57

a losing record on Safeway, my

1:43:00

NHL picks. Two and three this

1:43:02

week for Blake. He

1:43:04

had Minnesota to beat Calgary.

1:43:06

That one came in wrong.

1:43:08

He had the Canucks to

1:43:10

beat Minnesota. That one

1:43:12

came in wrong. And he

1:43:14

had Colorado to beat Vancouver.

1:43:16

And that one came in

1:43:19

incorrect as well. So he

1:43:21

won't be... gobbling up the

1:43:23

scene points this week, but he's

1:43:25

done very well for himself, and

1:43:27

you can too, with the Safeway

1:43:29

MyNHL picks. We had a ton

1:43:31

of fun playing the game this

1:43:34

week, or this year. One lucky

1:43:36

winner is going to be selected

1:43:38

to attend the 2025 -26 NHL

1:43:40

season opener. Thank you to Safeway

1:43:42

for being a part of Sakeris

1:43:44

and Price this season. Looking forward

1:43:46

to playing MyNHL picks, Safeway MyNHL

1:43:49

picks in the fall. Poll

1:43:51

question results for the Surrey Mitsubishi poll

1:43:53

question from Tuesday Jeff. If Canucks management

1:43:55

cites injuries in explaining where this season

1:43:57

went wrong, is that an excuse or

1:43:59

a reason? Did you see the results?

1:44:01

I did not. Okay. What did the

1:44:03

people say, excuse or reason? I think

1:44:05

the people are angry, so I'm going

1:44:07

to say they see it as an

1:44:09

excuse. Indeed. Percentage? 58.

1:44:11

64. Harley, you

1:44:13

can't use injuries as an excuse is such

1:44:15

a... Fucking cliche. Of course you can

1:44:18

use injuries as an excuse when your top

1:44:20

players are out. Anyone who thinks not

1:44:22

is an idiot. VJ, injuries are

1:44:24

not an excuse for drama, low

1:44:26

effort, blowing leads, not showing up, and

1:44:28

a weak leadership group. Salt and

1:44:31

paprika. It's an excuse as that

1:44:33

happened during the season. Roster construction

1:44:35

and EP40 Miller feud were known

1:44:37

problems prior to the start and

1:44:39

not properly dealt with. Management

1:44:41

let the team down this year. And

1:44:44

Jay agrees with us. He says,

1:44:46

reason, but not

1:44:48

the reason. Errors
