a wonderful take on the classic duo. it healed all the wounds the bbc version left me with. the characters are distinct and likeable, the dialogues are skillfully written, and the acting is perfectly natural and convincing.the characterisation is truly top-notch. as a man diagnosed with both autism and adhd, it's extremely refreshing to see (well, hear) a well-developed character sharing my conditions. sherlock isn't intentionally mean or a dick like in the bbc version, there is no "high-functioning sociopath" bullshit. he's simply a neurodivergent man navigating situations and relationships that are more confusing to him due to his conditions. it's also wonderful to witness the development of his relationships with neurotypical people, showing the audience their peaceful coexistence achieved with mutual understanding, respect and compromises. also, finally we have an adaptation where john watson is truly the most awkward person to ever grace the surface of the earth.I also find the way doyle's stories are adapted here to be very well done. there are plenty of stories that simply didn't age well and don't make sense from the perspective of someone living in the modern world. take the case of the creeping man for example - in the original dude's literally transforming into a monkey. sherlock and co significantly improves the story while still respecting the original and peppering in plenty of little nods towards it.on a similar note, I'm very glad to see more female competent characters here, because in the canon women mostly play the role of a victim, a damsel in distress, or some insignificant wife to be killed off later. mariana definitely takes the cake here, bless her. she's like atlas holding up the sky.finally, it's so invigorating to discover all the creators' little winks. queer victor trevor, an offhand mention of irene adler, professor moriarty listening intently... really, listening to sherlock and co is an absolute delight. it brightens up my every tuesday. cannot recommend this podcast enough, both to avid fans of the canon and to people who have never interacted with it.
