2:24

back. My name is Kit. I'm Andy.

2:26

And I'm Steve. And this

2:28

is Streaming Things, streaming the last

2:30

of us this time. It's episode two

2:32

of season two through the valley.

2:34

This is a big one. So full

2:37

spoilers ahead. If you have not

2:39

seen the episode, don't listen to a

2:41

goddamn word of this. We're going

2:43

to get into the nitty gritty. Oh,

2:46

man. If you're newer

2:48

to streaming things, we have all played

2:50

the games. Steve and Andy have

2:52

played the games several times. Huge fans. Huge.

2:56

The biggest fan you'll ever see. Andy. I

2:58

just started playing the games when the show

3:00

came out. But we all have that kind

3:02

of background. I'm

3:04

excited to get into this.

3:06

I'm a little nervous to get

3:09

your all's reaction to this

3:11

episode. I have other close

3:13

friends who are huge fans of

3:15

this game that they have very rational,

3:17

reasoned, measured opinions, but ultimately didn't

3:19

like a lot of stuff that happened

3:22

in this episode. And I've

3:24

been, of course, privy

3:26

to some of the

3:28

early reactions online.

3:30

And I'm prepared for

3:32

a heartbreak a little bit,

3:34

but maybe I'm wrong. Because I, spoiler

3:36

alert, was profoundly affected by this

3:39

for different reasons. But

3:41

yeah, we're going to talk about our overall thoughts

3:43

on this episode. I'll go around the table

3:46

and then do a scene by scene play by

3:48

play recap of exactly what went down. We've

3:50

got some fun categories at the end. Our

3:52

top three favorite moments, which

3:55

again, I've forgotten what we're calling these. I'm not going

3:57

to lie. Firefly moments.

3:59

Firefly. I wrote clicker stickers. And

4:01

I was like, ooh, I like

4:04

clicker stickers better if I'm being

4:06

honest. Love it. It

4:08

doesn't even make any sense. Which are

4:10

our favorite episodes. And

4:12

then our bullets

4:14

and pills. Pills,

4:16

baby. So we're going

4:19

to talk about all the Easter eggs and references

4:21

to the game itself. Aside from the obvious, this whole

4:23

thing is based on the games. And

4:25

then our eight outbreak

4:27

performance, our top favorite performance

4:29

of the episode. We'll give that award

4:31

to a particular actor. All

4:33

of that is up ahead. So

4:35

just just sit tight and get

4:38

ready for it. You can email the

4:40

show at streamingthingspod at gmail .com You

4:42

can go to patreon .com slash streaming

4:44

things to get access to episodes

4:46

like this without any ads and Also

4:48

bonus content like our Game of

4:50

Thrones rewatch our midnight mass rewatch so

4:52

much I mean we do honestly

4:55

a ridiculous amount of bonus content for

4:57

for the patrons over there because

4:59

we owe them our lives quite

5:01

quite frankly speaking of ads just

5:03

really briefly Ads

5:05

are localized and automated, so we just

5:07

tell the service where to put

5:09

the ad, and they put

5:12

whatever ad in there that they

5:14

want based on where you live. With a

5:16

caveat, we are supposed to have control over

5:18

the types of ads that they put in

5:20

there. There was

5:22

a recent update where some of

5:24

our requests got unclicked or circumvented

5:26

and some... Yeah, they got

5:28

wiped, so basically everything was

5:31

up for grabs to throw in there,

5:33

and we weren't aware of that. Yeah,

5:35

so there were some ads espousing

5:37

views we do not support, and we

5:39

are so sorry for that. Specifically

5:42

some mega churches

5:44

that are very

5:46

anti -humanity. Got

5:49

some Westboro shout -outs.

5:51

Yeah, Jonestown

5:53

Kool -Aid, 50 % off. Yeah,

5:56

we believe everybody has a right

5:58

to live and be happy in world.

6:00

We are very, very pro. LGBTQIA

6:03

plus, you

6:06

know, you guys all know this, but newer

6:08

listeners don't. And so their very first episode

6:10

they're listening to, they get an ad for

6:12

some horrible things. And we're very sorry for

6:14

that. We have fixed that, we think, but

6:16

thank you for those that reached out. Yeah,

6:18

let us know if that doesn't work. I

6:20

was in contact with the people who do the

6:22

ads for us on the back end and gave

6:24

me a little piece of my mind. So let

6:26

me know if that doesn't work so I can

6:28

give them some more pieces of my mind. Another

6:30

piece. Yeah. Yeah. The next step is they get

6:32

a piece of these hands. That's what Steve told

6:34

me. I don't know what that means. Yeah. Just

6:37

wanted to shout that out there

6:39

for you guys. So I'm eager

6:41

to get into the weeds with what you guys

6:43

thought your initial reaction. We never talk right after

6:45

watching the episode and I did. I couldn't help

6:47

it. I text you guys to kind of get

6:49

a feeler and you guys gave me nothing and

6:51

I respect that. I

6:54

respect that. Andy. Yes.

6:56

What did you think of through

6:58

the valley? I

7:00

thought that this episode was incredible.

7:03

I knew what I was in

7:05

for when it happened. Obviously, I haven't

7:07

played the games and I know

7:09

the major plot beats. I

7:12

thought maybe they would have

7:14

saved the climax of

7:16

this episode for the following

7:18

just because when you

7:20

have Pedro Pascal, you want

7:22

to use him as

7:24

much as you can. I

7:28

knew it was gonna happen. I wasn't

7:30

positive that it was gonna happen this

7:32

episode until they made it to the

7:34

lodge. And then I thought, oh, okay,

7:37

we're doing this. We're doing this today. I

7:39

thought that it was genius

7:41

to couple

7:44

the climactic Joel

7:46

and Abby moment

7:48

with this massive battle

7:50

sequence happening in

7:53

Jackson's Hole. The battle

7:55

over Jackson's hole. Good

7:57

versus evil, a tale as old as

7:59

time. They're breaching the hole.

8:01

So many people pouring into Jackson's

8:03

hole right now. Who will

8:05

manage to be on top? I

8:08

thought that it was genius to

8:10

kind of begin with this, you know,

8:12

big storm that's blowing in

8:15

and thematically that's beautiful

8:17

and, you know, there's everybody

8:19

is in danger. Everybody

8:22

that we know everybody that we love

8:24

is in danger in this episode and

8:26

to get this crazy climactic battle on

8:28

this. Insane twist that change

8:30

forever changes what the story is and

8:32

what it's going to be from here

8:34

on out to get all of that

8:36

in episode two is crazy work and

8:38

i love it so much i watch

8:41

this episode with my soon to be

8:43

wife and. She was blown away and

8:45

like as soon as the credits rolled

8:47

out like Paulson just turned and looked

8:49

at her and I'm like, what do

8:51

you think? She's like, does she

8:53

know the twist? She did not know

8:55

the twist. She's like, is

8:57

he fucking dead? And I'm like, yeah,

8:59

baby, he just got stabbed in the

9:01

neck with a half of a golf

9:04

club. I don't think he's going to

9:06

survive that. And she says, what the

9:08

hell is that? What the fuck? And

9:10

I'm like, I know. She's like, I'm

9:12

pissed. I'm like, but is it good

9:14

pissed? Because like, yeah, there's a

9:16

difference. The internet obviously

9:18

reacted a certain kind of

9:20

way when this happened in

9:22

the games. And I

9:25

was not on that side. I think

9:27

that, you know, I didn't

9:29

like the red wedding either, but.

9:31

i understand why it happened i

9:34

think that it's good story telling

9:36

and i think that it was

9:38

necessary. For the story

9:40

that there wanted to tell in

9:42

this season in the second game

9:44

whatever i think that they did

9:46

an incredible job portraying that it

9:48

was very true to the story

9:50

as they portrayed it in the

9:53

games with some changes who's there

9:55

how certain things happen some bits

9:57

of the dialogue are a little

9:59

different but. Overall, they did

10:01

a phenomenal job recreating

10:03

the scene, the tension, the

10:06

heartbreak. They did

10:08

a fantastic job with this episode,

10:10

and I loved it. Awesome.

10:12

Steve, what about you, buddy? I

10:14

also love this episode. It was really,

10:16

really fun to watch because as someone

10:18

who's played the games... By the way,

10:20

how great is it that we're at

10:22

this moment? Because this is the moment

10:24

like when you try to talk about

10:26

Last of Us Part 2 or the

10:28

second season, you know this is coming

10:30

fairly early in the story and you're

10:32

kind of tiptoeing. We're like, what can

10:34

we talk about? So, man,

10:37

but I really appreciate it as

10:39

someone who has played the

10:41

game that this episode featured so

10:43

much that was different. There

10:46

were characters that were plucked out of

10:48

scenes and replaced with other characters. There's

10:50

this whole battle sequence that Andy mentioned

10:52

before that's not in the game at

10:54

all. And so as someone who played

10:56

the game and kind of knows the

10:59

story from there, I was very surprised

11:01

to come across an episode where I

11:03

didn't really know what was happening. It

11:05

made the stakes completely different. And also

11:07

it made me appreciate a lot of

11:09

the changes that they've made so far

11:11

to the story. Like we talked last

11:13

week about how,

11:16

oh, some things that happened with Dina

11:18

and Ellie happened later in the story. And

11:20

at the time I was like, that's

11:23

an interesting choice. I think that works

11:25

though. But this episode really solidified my

11:27

view. Like that was genius because they,

11:29

they swapped. Jesse in to where Dina

11:31

is and vice versa in a couple

11:33

of different places and the way they

11:35

did it and kind of lined it

11:37

up with this other event of Jackson

11:40

Hole being attacked by the horde, it

11:42

really raised the stakes for everyone involved.

11:44

It gave everyone agency and not just

11:46

necessarily Ellie and Joel in that situation.

11:48

So I thought that was really, really

11:50

smart. They had such an impossible task

11:52

heading into this episode specifically with the,

11:54

you know, the twist, the climax of

11:57

what happens with Joel. It's

11:59

not an enviable task, right? Like that's

12:01

a moment that is just like so

12:03

important to the story and in gaming.

12:05

And so how do you tackle this

12:07

moment on screen? And I think they

12:09

rose to the challenge. I think they

12:11

were able to, you

12:13

know, they did it differently. And

12:15

there are some things that would be like,

12:17

oh, I like the game's execution better

12:20

in that regard, but I like the show's

12:22

execution better in this regard. I think

12:24

both of them are equal. and on equal

12:26

footing. And I think that that end

12:28

of itself is a huge undertaking and a

12:30

huge success for this series so early

12:32

on in the season. So my hat's off

12:34

to them. I thought this was a

12:36

great episode. Kit, what about you? What did

12:38

you think? I thought this was phenomenal. It's

12:40

tough for me to even talk about

12:43

it. Like you mentioned, the Horde never

12:45

gets anywhere near Jackson in the game.

12:47

And so this whole kind of

12:49

giant battle sequence that we

12:51

get is completely Changed

12:54

and fabricated for the show and what

12:56

it does is it ramps up the

12:58

tension so much. I felt unwell

13:00

like it was like my anxiety

13:02

issues, so it's pretty dangerous for me

13:04

and you never know. How

13:06

far they're gonna go or how

13:08

far they're gonna deviate from the games

13:10

because you know in the games

13:13

Tommy's with Joel and instead it's Dina

13:15

and. Dina's with

13:17

Ellie and instead it's Jesse and so

13:19

they could fucking kill Tommy or

13:21

something crazy for all I know you

13:23

know I mean like They could

13:25

kill Maria and it's just like they

13:27

could for the show. So it's

13:29

like there is There is tension there

13:31

because you're like it's technically possible,

13:33

but it's also like a cool spectacle

13:35

as Well, it's a holy shit

13:37

like this is like big budget. This

13:39

is Battle of the Bastards,

13:41

this is some hard home shit, you know?

13:43

It does have that hard home vibe

13:46

to it, doesn't it? It does. And in

13:48

fact, I was reading, decoding

13:50

TV is Dave Chen's sub stack, I

13:52

highly recommend. And he did a kind

13:54

of a recap of this episode. And

13:56

his reaction was a little bit less

13:58

favorable is one of the people I

14:00

was mentioning earlier. But ironically, we're less

14:02

than a month away from like the

14:04

10th anniversary of hard home. And the

14:07

fact that you have this zombie horde

14:09

in the snow on HBO right as

14:11

we approach that anniversary is pretty funny.

14:13

But he thought it kind of... You

14:15

know what's incredible about that is on

14:17

our Patreon, we just covered... Well, this

14:19

week, later this week, we'll be releasing

14:21

the episode of season five, episode four

14:23

of Game of Thrones, The Sons of

14:25

the Harpy. That has the same director

14:27

as this episode, Mark Millaud. Mark Millaud,

14:29

yeah. Mark Millaud, yeah. Yeah, same director.

14:32

So the comparisons is very understandable. And

14:35

we'll be at hard home again in

14:37

like a month. Yeah, almost exactly at

14:39

the 10th anniversary. That's kind of crazy

14:41

But he thought it kind of detracted,

14:43

you know from some of the strengths

14:45

of season one and he took it

14:47

more as a Just spectacle kind of

14:49

thing like throwing in some high -budget

14:52

action for the peeps during this really

14:54

important Scene that took away from it.

14:56

I really couldn't disagree more. I thought

14:58

it kind of ramped

15:00

up and for people that somehow

15:02

escaped spoilers this far into the

15:04

show from the game, which have

15:06

to exist, but I imagine it

15:08

because people have been so fucking

15:10

rude in the comments of every

15:12

video about this game and TV

15:14

show for years now. Oh,

15:17

wait, do you see what happens? Oh, he's going

15:19

golfing. I

15:21

have nothing else in life but to take

15:23

joy from others. I

15:26

think that even for people that

15:28

Knew it was coming, it added some

15:30

tension that wouldn't have otherwise been

15:32

there. And then if you didn't, it

15:34

kind of, it was like, look at the left hand,

15:36

look at the left hand, and then slap the shit

15:38

out of you with the right hand. So

15:42

on a personal level, they've set

15:44

up this dynamic between Joel and

15:47

Ellie, and they did this so

15:49

expertly in one episode, because it's

15:51

all we've gotten, that they've been

15:53

kind of estranged for a while. She

15:56

she's feeling that he's lied to

15:58

her but doesn't know the specifics

16:00

of it. There's a rift between

16:02

them on top of The kind

16:04

of normal rebellious feelings that you

16:06

get at the age of you

16:08

know, 17 to 20 or so

16:11

And so she's been really shitty

16:13

to Joel for a while and

16:15

then she didn't get a chance

16:17

to reconcile that and now he's

16:19

dead and like the last thing

16:21

that I said to my mother

16:23

was awful and She's gone forever

16:25

And so it's like, that's a

16:27

brutal feeling. So I'm just

16:29

sitting there, wracked with

16:31

sobs. And

16:34

then these motherfuckers, these

16:37

sadistic bastards put through the

16:39

valley in on the soundtrack,

16:41

which is a song that

16:43

in and of itself is

16:46

so beautiful and morose has

16:48

always wrecked me anyway. But

16:50

like... That was a knife

16:52

on top of a golf

16:54

club beating, you know what

16:56

I mean? I was sitting

16:58

there trying to recover and

17:01

put a tourniquet on and

17:03

they were like Yeah, I

17:05

mean it was I mean

17:07

I was devastated for a

17:09

good hour or two after

17:11

this episode I thought I'm

17:14

gonna watch blues clues exclusively

17:16

for a month The fact

17:18

that it's bluey the fact

17:20

that it's Pedro Pascal again

17:23

is so funny if you're a Game of

17:25

Thrones fan. If

17:27

you think of it from like a meta

17:29

context like this, motherfucker. Yeah, I

17:31

thought it was beautifully done and I

17:33

really like the changes. I

17:35

was reading another sub -stack, friend of the

17:37

show, Clara Curtis. You should check out

17:39

theirs. It's called Clara's Corner. And

17:42

they were talking about how Tommy

17:44

not being there adds a really interesting

17:46

Because, again, he's with Joel at

17:48

the Lodge in the games. It adds

17:50

a really interesting dynamic of guilt

17:52

for his character. Like, perhaps he's always

17:54

going to wonder if he could

17:56

have done something if he had gone

17:58

to help. Yeah, what they're doing

18:01

with Tommy specifically in this episode, I'm

18:03

really interested to see, because I

18:05

completely agree with Clara 100 % on

18:07

that front. It really adds another dimension

18:09

to Tommy's character. But also, you

18:11

know, Tommy and Maria are like, they

18:14

are Jackson. So having

18:16

them be there to fight for Jackson

18:18

and having it wrecked as bad as

18:20

it is, that adds another layer to

18:22

this character that I'm excited to see

18:24

where they go forward with him. It's

18:26

very interesting. Dave Chen had a really

18:28

funny joke in his sub -stack at

18:30

the end. He was like, side

18:33

point. I don't think they have to worry

18:35

about the housing crisis in Jackson anymore. That's

18:39

good. Then it's funny. I'm

18:41

curious what you guys think about... you're

18:43

never going to get the impact that you

18:45

felt in the game. And I think

18:47

that's where a lot of the fandom just

18:49

needs to let that go. Like when

18:51

you physically play as Joel for so many

18:53

hours, you know, if you

18:55

100 % of the game, you're talking 50,

18:58

60, 70 hours, and then you might

19:00

have played there a few times when

19:02

you get to the second game. So

19:04

you spent potentially hundreds of hours as

19:06

this person. And then also there's a

19:08

lot more out of nowhere factor to

19:10

the game. You don't know who Abby

19:12

is. You don't even know. I think

19:15

her name is woman when this happens.

19:18

I think it's woman and then Owen is

19:20

man. And then, like, there's a big surprise

19:22

factor in the game. Yeah, I was actually

19:24

talking through my feelings a lot with Erica

19:26

last night because, you know, the episode ended

19:28

and I was like, you

19:30

know, this is great. I'm

19:32

loving everything they're doing, but

19:34

there's something missing with the

19:36

Firefly team, the Firefly kids. WLF.

19:39

And I was like talking about like, I

19:41

think Caitlyn Deever's great as Abby, but I was

19:44

like, I'm not really connecting with the others

19:46

the way I was connected with them in the

19:48

game. And, you know, I was

19:50

talking through my feelings with her last

19:52

night and she kind of brought up some

19:54

things because she has the perspective of

19:56

never playing the games. And I had a

19:58

realization where my hangups were coming from

20:00

just the presentation of how those characters are

20:03

introduced in the game versus the show. Because

20:05

in the game, you don't really see the

20:07

others. You get to meet Abby and Owen.

20:10

And Owen, you kind of get

20:12

the idea that Owen is like, hey, I'm here

20:15

for you, but like, we don't want to attack

20:17

this. This is, we're gonna all die. And then

20:19

things happen similarly what the show does. And

20:21

then, but the others sort of, the first time you

20:23

see the others in any big way is when they kill

20:25

Joel. And they all seem much more like

20:28

a unit like, oh, it's Joel. Oh, you guys act

20:30

like you heard of me before. And that's a real big

20:32

like, you know, bottom coming out

20:34

of your soul. I'm like, oh no, they're

20:36

here for him. It's cause we have... Yeah.

20:38

And then she like shoots him like it's

20:40

very sudden when she shoots him in the

20:42

leg. And so you get this idea that

20:44

they're all on the same team. But then

20:46

when the sound goes out for Ellie, that's

20:48

when you really start seeing potential cracks, but

20:50

you don't know what the cracks are. So

20:53

they're a huge mystery, that whole group. And

20:55

there's also three or more of them in

20:57

the game. And it looks like they're merging

20:59

Manny specifically with another one of the characters

21:01

Jordan. But as I was talking

21:03

that through, like, oh, it's just a presentation.

21:05

They want to be upfront with where

21:08

these characters are and show that they're not

21:10

about 100 % with Abby early on. And

21:12

that's a different style choice. And then once

21:14

I realized that's what they were doing and

21:16

like, oh, they're just going about it differently.

21:18

Now I can let that go and be

21:20

like, okay, let me, let me intake these

21:23

characters that they're crafting for me in the

21:25

show and see how they go. So it

21:27

was actually a really productive conversation I had

21:29

with her. Good. Yeah, I

21:31

think there's a divide right now. And

21:33

a lot of, again, I don't mean

21:35

to be too condescending, part

21:37

of my nature, I guess, but I think

21:39

a lot of the fandom is being

21:42

just completely disingenuous in general with how they

21:44

approach this. And they were never going

21:46

to like give it a shot as how

21:48

it's portrayed in the show. But in

21:50

general, I think the show is much more

21:52

violent and much more graphic. It

21:54

cuts to black when Joel is hit with

21:56

the golf club. Now

21:58

you do see some brains and stuff

22:00

later in the kind of imagining

22:03

being beat with the golf club rather than

22:05

stabbed through the neck is maybe worse, but she

22:07

kind of tortures him for a lot longer

22:09

in the show. But everyone

22:11

else to your point, Steve, of this

22:13

crew is much more gentle in

22:15

the show. In

22:17

the game, they pistol whip

22:19

Tommy and knock him out.

22:21

And then in the show,

22:24

they're like injecting Dina. Go

22:27

sleep, go sleep. They just have

22:29

an anesthesiologist there. You probably don't want

22:31

to see this. That

22:34

was an interesting choice, for sure. Well,

22:36

they're adamant that they don't want to

22:38

hurt anyone else. So I think they're

22:40

trying really hard to show Abby is

22:42

consumed by hatred and revenge, and these

22:44

are good people. And

22:47

they're trying to show that much earlier because they

22:49

have less time. A lot of people in the

22:51

game, even though they had all that time, never

22:53

got there anyway. which

22:56

is so funny to

22:58

me. And I think

23:00

it hinges on the thing. I

23:02

will die on this hill. It really

23:04

upsets me. The people that say

23:06

the fireflies could have never manufactured a

23:08

vaccine and they couldn't have disseminated

23:10

it and they were wrong and Joel

23:12

was 100 % right. I

23:14

think people that think that

23:16

way are completely at a

23:18

disadvantage from being able to

23:20

see the value of the

23:23

last of us too. because

23:25

that's how they feel. So they

23:27

can't feel like, this was

23:29

the only end that Joel could

23:31

have possibly had, really, because he

23:33

murdered 18 people in cold blood,

23:35

right? Or at least one, because

23:37

you can see 17, they signed

23:39

up for that. You could make

23:41

that argument, you know? Definitely

23:44

one real murder, for sure.

23:47

But also like because of him,

23:49

in their eyes, the one true

23:51

way to save humanity has been

23:54

snuffed out. But

23:56

also their friends and family are dead too.

23:58

It took me 10 minutes to ask this

24:00

question. I'm so sorry. I'm just so overwhelmed

24:02

by this episode. But do you think the

24:04

show's portrayal was more or less graphic? Because

24:06

I know it's not going to be as

24:08

impactful because of all the things I started

24:10

with 10 minutes ago. Andy?

24:15

More or less graphic? I

24:18

think that... more graphic because

24:20

I'm watching a real life portrayal

24:22

of it, you know, so

24:25

there's always the separation that you

24:27

feel to some extent with anything

24:29

that's at least I do with

24:31

anything that's animated or video game

24:33

or whatever. So seeing

24:35

an actual actor there with

24:37

like the insane makeup that they

24:39

used with him like his

24:41

eyes like swell and shut and

24:44

Pedro Pascal does such a

24:46

good job of like this. He's

24:48

been been beat within an inch

24:50

of his life, but he still

24:53

like has this like resignation but

24:55

also like I don't know care

24:57

the way that he's looking at

24:59

Ellie as he's about to die

25:01

I thought it was so much

25:03

more heart -wrenching and effective just

25:05

because of the way it's performed

25:07

You know and I mean obviously

25:09

shout out to Ashley Johnson and

25:12

Troy Baker for the way that

25:14

they portrayed it in the moment

25:16

For the game But yeah, I

25:18

think just seeing actual people being

25:20

put through it is way more

25:22

affecting. So I mean, I

25:24

can't imagine what it would have felt

25:26

like if I had never played the game.

25:28

But even knowing what was happening and

25:31

seeing it be played out almost beat for

25:33

beat, I still was like, oh, fuck,

25:35

you know, like cringing at it. I thought

25:37

it was great. Steve,

25:39

I think the game is more. Graphic

25:41

at least for me. I think in

25:43

general as a rule of thumb the game

25:45

is a gnarly graphic Game where a

25:47

lot of stuff that happens you really like

25:49

I don't like that I'm doing this

25:52

but in that scene of Joel being hit

25:54

I don't know something about like The

25:56

the shotgun to the leg is a lot

25:58

more visceral to me and also you

26:00

can see like his bone hanging out and

26:02

stuff in the game and the Her

26:04

hitting him in the head with the clubs

26:06

is more effective to me than hitting

26:09

him in the leg. I don't know,

26:11

something about that translates more visceral to me.

26:14

I can see that. But yeah,

26:16

I mean, I think it's weird to

26:18

say like, I think it comes down

26:20

to your preference, but...

26:22

Which light beating

26:25

do you like? I

26:27

think it's worse the more you think

26:29

about the show because when it cuts

26:31

back, she stabs him with that golf

26:34

club, right? Which does seem

26:36

more surgical. them beating him

26:38

over the head until a skull

26:40

breaks, maybe. But if you

26:42

think about it, she's only able to stab

26:44

him with that golf club because she's been

26:46

beating him with it for so long that

26:48

it broke. Yeah. Right.

26:50

I wish we would have, I mean, it would have

26:52

been more visceral if we had seen that happen though.

26:55

I was a little confused. I was kind of

26:57

confused. In the game, it

26:59

cuts to black when she does the final blow. You

27:02

get like a frame of contact

27:04

though. You get just a

27:06

little The

27:13

sound design of the club going into

27:15

the neck. I thought was unbelievably good.

27:17

It was just so, you know, I

27:19

do, I do think that the, the,

27:21

you said it best kit, the surgical

27:23

stabbing of the golf club. I think

27:26

that fits with what they're going with

27:28

Abby in the show better. I

27:30

do think, cause there is like a surgical

27:32

like, okay, now it's time to actually put an

27:34

end to it. He's dead, dead. She didn't

27:36

just bop him the head. Yeah.

27:39

She didn't just bop him in the head and be

27:41

like, oh, this one, I'm really going to hit him.

27:43

She, she pulls out the sure thing club from top

27:45

golf and like, it's that sure thing. You know? No,

27:47

this one is, it was her like going, okay,

27:49

this definitely will kill him. I'm done. I

27:52

do like that, that changed for the show

27:54

character at least. We'll

27:56

talk more. This was obviously, we want to get

27:58

a lot of this out of the way, but

28:00

we'll back to it when we get to the

28:02

end of the episode and the recap. I just

28:04

want to get your initial reactions. It sounds like

28:07

you're overly all very positive, which is a good

28:09

surprise. I was really worried Steve was going to

28:11

have a left fielder here because, you know. I

28:15

mean, I famously laugh when Dobby dies. God

28:17

damn you, Steve. Let me tell

28:19

you guys, when she stabbed Joel in

28:22

the back of the head, I was

28:24

howling, slapping my knee, having a great

28:26

time. I didn't expect that. I just

28:28

know you're probably the biggest fan of

28:30

the games here, even though

28:32

Andy's a huge fan. And

28:34

a lot of valid

28:36

points have been raised

28:39

from fans. A lot of

28:41

invalid ones, too. But I've read some really smart

28:43

people talking about some stuff that I was curious about.

28:45

Well, let's get in and people are probably Tired

28:48

of this and just want to get to

28:50

the recap part. I'm not sure but there's

28:52

a lot more to discuss We can revisit

28:54

this when we get to this actual scene

28:57

and I'm sorry for derailing us. I was

28:59

just All in all I was profoundly affected

29:01

last night. That's why I never text you

29:03

guys, but I was like Dude, you know,

29:05

like I was fucked up. I was fucked

29:07

up. I saw your text and I I

29:09

was like, yeah, I saw it, but I

29:11

was actually fully expecting you to be like,

29:13

hated it. Fuck it. And I was like,

29:15

oh, no, did he not like it? Because

29:17

usually you don't text us unless it's bad.

29:20

That's true. No, no, I was just

29:22

like so distraught. I was crying at

29:24

the Tommy and Maria stuff. Yeah, same.

29:26

Like I was so fucked up and

29:28

like, and then I knew what was

29:31

coming. So I'm like, no, not like

29:33

this. You know, I love when like

29:35

what Ria is holding Tommy up, like

29:37

he's starting to collapse. Yeah. Oh, it's

29:39

good, man. Great stuff.

29:42

Let's let's get into it. We're going

29:44

to do the full recap and get right

29:46

into the weeds of all of this

29:48

stuff real deep, real deep into Jackson's

29:50

hole. But first, let's take

31:01

And we're back and we're ready for

31:03

the recap. The HBO

31:05

description of this episode

31:07

is thus. As a

31:09

storm brews in the mountains, the

31:11

people of Jackson Hole prepare for

31:13

the worst amid increased sightings of

31:15

infected. Meanwhile, Abby

31:17

weighs her options. Do I wear

31:19

the blue jacket or the red

31:21

one? I don't know. Mel, what

31:24

do you think? I'm

31:26

really disappointed in myself for laughing

31:28

when I got to Jackson

31:30

Hole. Don't be. It'll

31:32

never not be kind of weird to

31:34

say. Like

31:36

grow up, you know, it is incredibly

31:38

funny. I love it. So we actually start

31:40

with kind of something kind of controversial

31:43

not only have we been You know episode

31:45

one revealed that Abby is a firefly

31:47

and kind of already that she has a

31:49

close personal connection with at least one

31:51

of the people who died But in this

31:53

we you know this the episode opens

31:55

with a flashback and the game does this

31:57

repeatedly where we get these kind of

31:59

Explorations of Abby's psyche where she's kind of

32:01

reliving the nightmare Specifically,

32:03

they always put her in this hallway

32:05

to start off every time. Yeah,

32:08

but to do it this early in

32:10

the show And I don't know

32:12

it's just again It's it's an interesting

32:14

way to approach it like no

32:16

no mystery about why whatever his motivations

32:18

are but she's walking through the

32:20

hallway the hallway There's an alarm going

32:23

off. So she's back in that

32:25

moment when Joel killed all of the

32:27

fireflies And then she's kind of

32:29

confronting her younger self and Don't

32:31

go in there. Yeah other Abby

32:33

says He's dead Don't go down. I

32:36

don't know you you know. I

32:38

don't know you get off my purse

32:40

Don't go in there. His brains

32:42

are on the floor. Oh

32:44

And I think it's a it's a

32:46

great choice to have Memory Abby go

32:48

into the room. You don't really hear

32:50

anything that's going on But you they

32:52

say we stay with present -day Abby

32:54

who's reliving the memory and she cries

32:56

like I think that's a really powerful

32:58

moment Yeah, it's a strong performance from

33:00

Caitlin Dever there. Abby, we

33:02

cut to present day Abby. She's

33:04

sleeping in the lodge. She wakes up.

33:07

Owen is already awake. He's looking at

33:09

Jackson for the first time in

33:11

the daylight. the daylight. Yeah. And all

33:13

the others around them start to

33:15

wake up. And

33:18

Owen points out, yeah, Jackson's hole is

33:20

big. His hole is huge. I heard

33:22

stories, but I did not believe Jackson's

33:24

hole was that big. I feel like

33:26

we could get in that hole pretty

33:28

easily. However, I do think we got

33:30

a fight on our hands at this

33:32

point. And I don't even think it's

33:34

going to be. It's it's not good.

33:36

It's not good. You know, but Owen

33:38

points out the real problems. There's

33:41

not just the guards and

33:44

the roots and the gates and

33:46

the dogs, too. We

33:48

don't even know where Joel is. Like, what are we going to

33:50

do? Right. And

33:54

Abby's got a terrible plan. She's like, all right, here's

33:56

what we do. We're just going to

33:58

incapacitate a couple guards, time up and make

34:00

them tell us where Joel is. She's

34:02

like, we're going to torture people? I thought you

34:04

said we weren't going to hurt anybody but Joel.

34:06

She's like, that was the promise. No,

34:09

no, no, no. I'm just going to scare them.

34:11

And Owen points out that that's a bad plan.

34:13

So what if they don't tell us? We got

34:15

to commit to the bit at that point and

34:17

do a torture. Yeah. Man, he's like,

34:19

we can't just let him go. Right,

34:21

you know I like how Owen

34:23

has the concept of a plan

34:26

I Have the concept of a

34:28

plan concept of a beginning of

34:30

an idea of a plan so

34:32

Abby says okay, let's I'm gonna

34:34

buy Owen some time to Cogitate

34:36

you know to get the rest

34:38

of the concept of his plan

34:41

together. I'll take the first watch

34:43

And it's bitterly cold outside. It's

34:45

so cold. I've been cold before,

34:47

but I don't think I've been

34:49

as cold as Jackson's whole is.

34:53

Like just immediately she's

34:55

like, like, like Dina

34:57

later gets frostbite. Yeah.

34:59

At one point you, we see

35:01

a thermometer outside and I think it's

35:03

at like zero degrees or something.

35:06

That's not that cold. Or like negative,

35:08

or maybe it was like negative

35:10

20. It's cold. It's fucking cold. Yeah.

35:12

They didn't have to be negative,

35:14

considerable, to do the frostbite. But

35:16

Owen could only do the watch, because he did the

35:18

first watch. He's like, I could only last out there

35:20

for an hour. And I love how when Abby's going

35:22

up to the spot, she's like, I got to be

35:24

out here for an hour? Fuck. Yeah,

35:27

sounds awful. And

35:29

back in, the others know that Owen doesn't

35:31

really have a plan. They confront him about it.

35:33

And he says, I do have a plan. It's

35:35

to convince her to go back, right? So

35:37

none of them. Want to commit to

35:39

this getting Joel thing and they know Abby's pretty

35:42

crazy about it So they don't know what to

35:44

do, but that's that's they're about to abandon ship,

35:46

right? He says

35:48

the only people that are gonna get

35:50

killed out here are us if we

35:52

go through with this Then we cut

35:54

to Ellie which I think is the

35:56

actual introduction to Ellie in the game

35:58

is this moment After

36:01

the title card, it's the first thing in

36:03

part two. Yeah. It's someone pounding on Ellie's

36:05

door. Just like the game. It's Jesse to

36:07

get her for her eight AM patrol. And

36:11

there's this really funny scene where he's

36:13

like, I heard it. I heard about

36:15

last night and Ellie thinks he's referencing

36:17

her kissing his ex -girlfriend. So

36:19

he's like, look, dude, she kissed me. And he's

36:21

like, I was talking about the fight with Seth

36:23

and Joel. You kissed her? Dude, we've only broken

36:25

up like a week. What the fuck? And he's

36:27

like, I already knew I'm just fucking with you.

36:30

That is fucked up though. This

36:32

is such a great scene to show

36:34

how close they are and the relationship between

36:36

the two of them. It's funny as

36:39

hell. Yeah, I thought it was great. But

36:42

the whole town is on alert. Apparently

36:45

they had found a pile

36:47

of frozen dead infected and underneath

36:49

were 30 live ones. So

36:51

this is kind of Chekhov's frozen

36:53

infected. It's showing you the

36:55

situation that Abby gets into later.

37:00

preparing for a massive horde attack, but don't

37:02

really think it's going to happen. Certain

37:04

team masquerading is knowledge. The

37:07

Ellie way. And

37:09

she's like, you know what? I'm

37:11

going to do my patrol

37:13

with Joel. And

37:15

then he's, oh, you guys made

37:17

up. And there's this interesting scene that

37:19

they decided to put in where

37:21

Ellie's like, look, my shit with Joel

37:23

is complicated, but we will always

37:25

be close. Essentially, like I'm

37:27

still me he he steal Joel

37:29

and nothing will change. We'll have

37:31

a nice daddy daughter day out on

37:34

patrol, right? And

37:36

I again reading the Clara's corner

37:38

I thought it was really insightful

37:40

and interesting as somebody who's played

37:42

the game as many times as

37:44

Clara has that They didn't really

37:46

like this scene. They thought it

37:48

was kind of a Cheap shortcut

37:50

to just have Ellie say outright.

37:52

Oh me and Joel are cool

37:56

I disagree. I think it's

37:58

necessary to remind casual

38:00

watchers or only show watchers

38:02

that even though Ellie's

38:04

going through what she's going

38:06

through, she loves Joel, right?

38:10

Were you guys struck by

38:12

a laziness to this? Oh,

38:15

just to remind you, I love Joel,

38:17

but I thought it was neat. I really

38:19

kind of liked it. It hit me

38:21

hard knowing what was coming. I wouldn't have

38:23

called it a shortcut or anything. I

38:25

took it as kind of a her way

38:27

of saying, look, fuck off. This is

38:30

none of your business. Like we'll be fine.

38:33

Stop talking about it. Leave me alone. And

38:35

neither did I. I mean, they're Again, they're

38:37

they have to change things that happen in

38:39

the game and restructure them So on TV

38:41

it plays differently because this this is probably

38:43

for the people who've never played the game

38:46

to sort of just hammer home like no

38:48

They're like they might be fighting but they

38:50

still love each other and I kind of

38:52

get the viewpoint that they're coming from But

38:54

I but I in the moment. I didn't

38:56

think this was like oh, that's lazy, you

38:58

know, I just thought that was just that

39:00

I don't want to reiterate I don't want

39:02

to misrepresent Claire's corner But

39:05

they did take it. I highly recommend

39:08

you just read that. It's very, they get

39:10

very deep into the weeds for all

39:12

the differences from the game and the show.

39:14

But yeah, I just wanted to say

39:16

that when I, I really actually liked this

39:18

scene. I appreciated taking a moment to

39:20

remind people how much love Ellie really does

39:22

have for him, you know, and in

39:25

a pinch, she'd kill that whole town and

39:27

believe with Joel, you know. And

39:29

it's very, it's very in character for

39:31

her. Like he's, he's him. I'm me. quit

39:34

talking about us, you know? Yeah. But

39:36

unfortunately, he's already out on patrol. He

39:38

left long ago. He's out with Dina. And

39:42

Maria wants to have a quick word with her

39:44

before she leaves for her patrol. We cut to

39:46

Tommy, who is taking a much more of a

39:48

leadership role in the show than he did in

39:50

the games. You know, I think in the games,

39:52

it was mostly Maria, who was like the town

39:54

leader. Yeah,

39:56

they've sort of re contextualized the

39:58

leadership of Jackson like there's a

40:00

council now. Both of them are

40:02

on it, but there's a Senate. Yeah.

40:06

Yeah. And, uh, but, but in the game, yeah,

40:08

Maria was much more kind of painted as like

40:10

the de facto leader of the town. It was

40:12

weird to see Jar Jar in the town meeting

40:14

in the back. You should guys think, can we

40:16

go to dad? I'm

40:19

not going to do a Jar Jar. I'm

40:23

going to let Steve handle

40:25

that one. Weeks.

40:27

Yeah. So Tommy's walking the town through the

40:29

emergency protocol. All of the the elderly and

40:31

children are supposed to go down to the

40:33

basements. Every able -bodied person is supposed to go

40:36

to the roofs with guns. Where do we

40:38

go Vanessa? The forest.

40:40

No you dumb little idiot. You're

40:42

gonna die. There was only one

40:45

wrong answer and that's what it

40:47

was. What are you teaching your

40:49

goddamn child there Beth? I

40:51

don't know if that's that character's name but...

40:53

The only person worse than that kid is

40:55

Earl who has previously shot himself in the

40:57

leg. So everyone, he's like, I'm

40:59

not gonna say who it is. Don't

41:03

be Earl. Don't be Earl. Maria

41:06

wanted to talk to Ellie because

41:08

she wants to force Seth to

41:10

apologize. The

41:12

homophobe from last episode. Correct, correct.

41:14

And he made them steak

41:16

sandwiches, but Ellie is not accepting

41:19

this apology. I love Bella

41:21

Ramsey does something so wonderful with

41:23

one short word. He goes

41:25

on and on and on. Ellie

41:29

gives him hell repeatedly, but at the very

41:31

end, she, Ellie

41:33

just goes, yep. And

41:35

it's like a truncated yep. You

41:37

know, it's already a short word, but

41:39

just the, you know, it gives

41:41

him no satisfaction. This, I

41:44

really love this scene in the show. I

41:46

think they do this scene a little, cause

41:48

this is something that happens in the game

41:50

exactly. Well, not quite exactly, but the same

41:52

premise. But I think this, Handles

41:54

it much better and that I think

41:56

they give Seth a little bit more

41:58

rope in the show where he's like,

42:00

hey, I'm trying to apologize. He

42:02

seems a lot more earnest in the

42:04

show, but Ellie is still hitting him

42:06

with like, yeah, people never say drunk

42:08

and say awful shit. They think all

42:10

the time, like she's still not giving

42:13

him that leeway. Whereas in the game,

42:15

it's less subtle and more overt that

42:17

he doesn't mean it. But I like

42:19

this little layer of nuance they give.

42:21

this interaction where it seems like he's

42:23

trying to meet it. She's like, no,

42:25

you fucking don't. Yep. It's

42:27

so great. Love. Yeah, I

42:29

love that line. Yeah. Oh, it's okay, Seth. I

42:31

get it. People get really drunk and say

42:33

things they've literally never thought before. Meaning

42:37

like, dude, you were drunk, but you're

42:39

still a fucking bigot. Even when you're sober,

42:41

like, you know, so it's great. But

42:43

soon as she's outside, Ellie can't feel her

42:45

ass. It's so goddamn cold. And

42:47

then we cut to Abby, who's cold as

42:49

fuck out there struggling. She's about to call it

42:51

and go in, but she sees two horses

42:54

with riders in the distance, which is, of course,

42:56

Joel and Dina. Tommy

42:59

and the town are prepping for the worst,

43:01

going through the, you know, stacking bullets, getting

43:03

those barrels that we see in action here

43:05

soon lined up. Prepare

43:07

for the worst. Hope for the best. Yeah. Yeah.

43:09

Worked out for him. And they get word from

43:11

one of their patrols that there's low visibility. They're

43:13

going to come back to camp. So

43:15

he's like, all right, just call all the patrols back. You

43:18

know, what's those getting bad out there? I

43:21

wish I hadn't sent any patrols out, but what's the worst

43:23

that could happen? Surely today of

43:25

all days won't be a convergence of

43:27

three tragedies all at once. Jesse

43:30

gets the call to turn back, but

43:32

they've gone too far. They're already kind of

43:34

caught in the storm. So we're going

43:37

to have to hole up here in a

43:39

different hole. I know a

43:41

place. We can't turn back. So

43:43

they parked the horses in the garage. I

43:46

love that the garage has food

43:48

for the horses. Yeah, as

43:50

soon as they get some, hey, they'll be

43:52

fine. Shimmer. And then they head to the

43:54

7 -Eleven full of weed. Am

43:57

I hallucinating right now? I

43:59

don't know. Do you see a 7 -Eleven full

44:02

of weed? Yeah. Well, then you're not hallucinating.

44:04

That's exactly what it is. Great line. This was

44:06

Eugene's secret place where he grew all his

44:08

weed for him and his wife. And

44:10

we find out that Eugene was a

44:12

firefly. He quit back in 2010. I

44:14

didn't want to kill any more people because he was

44:16

also a veteran of Vietnam. And

44:19

then Jesse talks about Eugene's death. You know,

44:21

we're all deal, Joel, having to put him

44:23

down. You know, go through

44:25

all the shit that that guy's been through just to

44:27

die like that sucks, right? But

44:30

this is a good scene because...

44:32

It kind of brings up to the

44:34

front when Ellie finds the Firefly

44:36

Dog tag. You can see it on

44:38

her face sort of like, oh

44:40

yeah, this is something that is an emotional

44:42

trigger for me. You can tell she gets

44:45

really serious. And then the conversation changes to

44:47

him. He's talking about like, oh man, it's

44:49

the same that Joel had to put Eugene

44:51

down the way he did, survive a war

44:53

and you still go out like that. But

44:55

hey, you had to do it. But it's

44:57

like, look, it's lingering on Ellie as if

45:00

to say like, yeah, Joel. Did

45:02

he kill all those fireflies? You

45:04

know that kind of there's a lot.

45:06

There's a lot of weight to

45:08

that scene No, it's I love this

45:10

scene because again, I will literally

45:12

end up dying on this hill probably

45:14

That the whole point of the

45:16

game is that Joel could have saved

45:18

humanity had he not saved Ellie

45:20

because They have Jesse say couldn't be

45:22

saved. I mean, what are you

45:24

gonna do and Ellie go? Yeah,

45:27

yeah, cuz not only yep, he

45:29

was a goner right not only does

45:31

that tell you that she kind

45:33

of knows but also like fucking obviously

45:35

that's the point of the story

45:37

is that that was that was an

45:39

alternative like without the ultimatum there's

45:41

no fucking point to this game but

45:43

whatever. But it's another wrinkle

45:45

like to that mystery of what

45:47

did Joel do to Eugene that has

45:49

people like what a way to

45:52

go. It was weird.

45:54

A Skullfucking was an interesting way,

45:56

too. With

45:58

the fungus in there and everything, like,

46:01

man, that seemed like a bad idea.

46:03

Gale's like, I just really don't. I

46:06

hate you. I

46:09

saved him. We

46:15

cut to Abby trying to

46:17

climb down in the snow, and

46:19

then she slides a long

46:21

way. It's like that

46:24

she slides so far dude

46:26

that look like fun. It's like

46:28

it's like the penguin up

46:30

at level in Mario 64 And

46:32

she slides into a field

46:34

of frozen but frozen bodies I

46:36

stuttered because this scene is

46:38

actually fucking terrifying and like it

46:40

was making me super creepy

46:42

extremely uncomfortable because they're all dead

46:44

bodies and then she sees

46:46

that there's a frozen clicker as

46:48

well and it's like moving It

46:52

slowly starts moving. Not because it's

46:54

alive, but because of what we

46:56

heard earlier, that there's a live

46:58

one's keeping warm underneath or whatever,

47:00

and they're stirring. And

47:02

so then they're alive, right? And there's

47:04

a fuckload of them. And it

47:06

zooms in on one clicker in particular

47:09

at one point. It's like... And

47:11

it's like fuck dude, and they're fast.

47:13

It's like 28 days later style zombies, right?

47:15

So they can actually run and I'm not

47:17

a very fast runner. I don't like snow.

47:19

This is like a triple whammy for me.

47:21

Oh dude, I wheeze so quickly when it's

47:23

cold out like out of me. You're

47:27

like running for your life. You

47:29

ever run in like 20 below

47:31

zero? That's shit. It's awful. It's

47:33

tough. Yeah. And she's booking

47:35

it though. She's doing the best she can. It's a

47:37

whole horde. I think

47:39

the The change in the game that

47:41

this sets up that I really like

47:43

is not only do we have this

47:45

like wild and crazy thing happening at

47:47

Jackson, but Abby is indirectly kind of

47:49

caused it in a way where she

47:51

stirred the hoard initially. Now I'm sure

47:53

the hoard would have gotten up when

47:55

that guy revealed the tendrils and the

47:57

pipes later on. But I do like

47:59

that they kind of film this with

48:01

Abby kind of stirring them first because

48:03

then it kind of makes it adds

48:05

another layer of people being mad at

48:08

her if they find that out. I

48:10

agree because the geography of this bit, like

48:12

she gets to like a wall with barbed

48:14

wire on it. And it's kind of like,

48:16

is she in fucking Jackson? You know I

48:18

mean? Like, cause in the game it's nowhere

48:20

near Jackson. So it's kind of like, I

48:22

don't know, I don't know where she's at,

48:24

but it's somewhere between the two. But yeah,

48:26

but she jumps up like a half broken

48:28

off ladder, gets over the side. She thinks

48:30

she's safe. How scary is

48:32

that when she's climbing the ladder and they're

48:34

right behind her and they're the World

48:36

War Z shit, man. They're all slamming themselves

48:38

into the wall climbing on top of

48:40

each other and shit. This chain link fence

48:42

scene that's right after the ladder is

48:44

so fucking good because they're like pushing their

48:47

own skin through the chain links and

48:49

almost getting to her and it's so terrifying

48:51

and like falling down and she has

48:53

to crawl under it. And then once the

48:55

lady gets through and like is crawling

48:57

behind her, it's like fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck,

48:59

fuck. But

49:01

then Joel saves her life because

49:03

she's wrestling with this one

49:05

clicker. It's a runner, but he

49:07

comes up revolver, blast in

49:09

the face. We get that ringing

49:11

because the gunshot kind of

49:13

disconcerted her. And she's

49:16

running along with him. He's like, come

49:18

on, come on, come on. And it's

49:20

the reveal of his name is something

49:22

that a lot of people have called

49:24

attention to as being worse in the

49:26

show because they like the agency. In

49:28

the game, he says, I'm Joel. What

49:31

and it's kind of like this You

49:33

know he takes action has agency in

49:35

that and this it's Dina going Joe

49:37

And Abby's like no fucking way like

49:39

you know, it's she's trying to sit

49:41

with that during she looks at his

49:43

gun, too Like I said like was

49:45

that the gun that he used maybe.

49:47

Oh, I took it is like I

49:49

got to wait Because he's gonna you

49:51

know, he would he could take yeah

49:54

I could see that, yeah. Was the

49:56

gun one of the things that she

49:58

brought up as like a distinguishing factor

50:00

of him? Like he's six feet tall,

50:02

has a scar on the side of

50:04

his head. He also has a sweet

50:06

six shooter on his hip. I don't

50:08

think so. No, no, yeah. I think

50:10

Chris is probably more correct that she

50:12

realized that he's got a gun and

50:15

she can't make a move on him

50:17

yet. She's got to be patient. Is

50:20

that legendary pistol, Suzanne? He

50:22

just carries around. We'll get to

50:24

that stuff later, Andy, because I think there's something

50:26

really funny there that happens. But

50:29

he goes, are your friends armed? Because she tells

50:31

him about she has friends up at the lodge.

50:33

At first, he wants to make sure she has

50:35

no bites. And he just believes her because he's

50:37

a good guy. But

50:40

he'll suss that out later. But

50:43

he's like, are your friends armed? She's like, oh,

50:45

yeah, we got telegons and shit. They're super dope.

50:47

We got some fucking hot cocoa. Yeah,

50:52

and he's like, any

50:54

chicks? No. So

50:56

they head up to the lodge. They have no other

50:58

better idea. So he pulls her up on the horse

51:00

and they roll out of there as the horde busts

51:02

in the little barn thing. We

51:04

cut back to Tommy in town. He finds

51:06

out that everyone but Joel and Dina

51:08

have been reached. And so

51:11

he goes into the radio operator,

51:13

Amy. Tommy does. tries

51:15

to reach Joel himself and he's like,

51:17

every fucking 10 seconds, Amy. And he's so

51:19

upset that his brother is the one

51:21

that's missing out there on patrol. And he's

51:23

very distraught by that. We

51:25

cut back to Ellie and Jesse and

51:27

Ellie finds the gas mask bong. Great.

51:31

She's like, I'm taking this with me. And Jesse's like,

51:33

you're definitely not. He's like, oh yeah. And I'm taking

51:35

a bunch of weed with me too. And he's like,

51:37

no, you're not. You know what? You

51:39

may be in charge of Jackson one day, but that day

51:41

is not yet come. It's so funny.

51:45

But then Ellie finds out that Joel and

51:47

Dina are missing because Amy, in trying

51:49

to reach Joel and Dina, accidentally reaches their

51:52

channel. And he's like, wait, what's going

51:54

on? And she overhears that Joel and Dina

51:56

are gone. They both immediately

51:58

book it outside out of

52:00

safety. And I thought

52:02

that this is one of the first times

52:04

where I cried. It's so stupid, but

52:06

I got choked up at how fast Ellie's

52:08

like, she's going to die in

52:10

the cold. It's so dangerous out there. They've already

52:12

established that they can't make it back. All of

52:14

that leaves both of their minds immediately. All

52:17

right, let's split up. You know, like it's

52:19

just They can only be out for no

52:21

more than 20 minutes until they'll start getting frostbitten.

52:24

Yeah, just no hesitation. That's

52:26

my people. You know what I mean?

52:28

It's so good. I'm gonna cry now. It's so

52:30

good. They write off. We cut to

52:33

Dina, Joel, and Abby are running. There's

52:35

more zombies pouring out. There are thousands of

52:37

them. I

52:39

skipped over it, but there's a point where

52:41

a dude is... some reason during this drill

52:43

for the horde attack and the storm coming

52:45

there still dudes out there just working on

52:47

the pops. They got a housing

52:49

crisis you know those houses to the last

52:51

minute to my shifts done you know i mean

52:54

i'm up for promotion. He

52:56

cracks open the pipe and

52:58

sees the cordyceps and he's like

53:00

oh fuck so he's running

53:02

to tell tommy about the cordyceps

53:04

but tommy. is interrupted because

53:06

the tower sees the horde at

53:08

the same time and that's

53:10

sniper tones cousin sniper tom up

53:12

there i'm so glad you

53:14

said that because as soon as

53:16

that guy pulls up the

53:18

binoculars like well butter my biscuits

53:20

it's round two sniper tone

53:22

time to give yourself a little

53:24

bit of a redemption arc

53:26

they're gonna penetrate jackson's hole if

53:28

i don't snipe these fuckers

53:30

out Get me, somebody get

53:33

me my gun. I'm gonna

53:35

proceed to miss the ball. There's

53:37

one good thing about this. I

53:39

really can't miss. I mean, they're

53:41

everywhere. This

53:44

seems like a day for me. The

53:46

God's finally smiled on old tone. But

53:51

yeah, he rings the bell at the

53:53

same time as the guy's running up

53:55

to tell Tommy. So he's interrupted from

53:57

so many bad things happening at once,

53:59

right? And

54:01

then, so they go into action, you

54:04

guys know the plan, roofs

54:06

and basements, roofs and basements. How

54:08

cool was that shot when

54:10

Joel and, sorry, Joel,

54:13

Dina and Abby are riding on the

54:15

horses and the hordes chasing them. And

54:17

then when the horde gets like the

54:19

updated instructions like, ooh, pound of people

54:21

this way, they're all like, it looks

54:23

like their heads are being like pulled

54:26

away, like they've got their own like

54:28

reins that are. Steering them elsewhere like

54:30

I really thought the the body work

54:32

from those extras running was really really

54:34

impressive It was like some two -towers

54:36

shit with them coming down like the

54:38

two different hills at the same time

54:41

like you know, whatever Yeah, and so

54:43

it begins. I just thought of like

54:45

Dr. Grant from Jurassic Park like notice

54:47

how they Move it together like a

54:49

flock of birds the gala -minus scene from

54:51

Jurassic Park. Do you follow Sam Neil

54:53

on tiktok? I do

54:56

not, but I wish I did. You

54:58

fucking need to. This dude is like

55:00

70, just living his best life on

55:02

some like Scottish farm or whatever. And

55:05

he's got a tractor with an

55:07

inflatable T -Rex. Just

55:09

driving through his fields with the

55:11

Jurassic Park music and the caption

55:13

is, Steven, I'm sorry. I

55:18

love Sam Neil. Living his best

55:20

life out there. He's a treasure. Basements

55:22

and roofs. Maria kisses Tommy because

55:25

they know all hell's about to break

55:27

loose. They gear up and move

55:29

out. They stack bullets, move more barrels in. They

55:31

bar the door with like two giant

55:34

trucks and a bobcat. It's like they're

55:36

lock on the front door. They even

55:38

put like blocks on the bobcat tires.

55:40

They are not messing around. You've got

55:42

a plan, a concept of a plan.

55:46

And I think it's Seth is one of the

55:48

people that has a flamethrower and they made a

55:50

point to show that. Yeah, I couldn't

55:52

tell if that was him or not, but I thought it

55:54

was him. Definitely look like him,

55:56

but I had the same hesitation. I'm not sure.

55:58

It's the only reason to show a close

56:00

up of him like flingering like that as if

56:02

it was him as what I think. But

56:04

well, whoever it was, that same person then turned

56:06

tail and ran. Is he the one who

56:09

runs? Right. Yeah. I thought so. Yeah. So they're

56:11

leaning in to fuck this guy and I

56:13

like that. Yep. I

56:15

don't like that Tommy's

56:18

war cry is Jackson Hole's.

56:20

Jackson Hole! You

56:22

know what would have made it better? Can I pitch

56:24

a better idea? Sure. What Tommy

56:26

does is he goes, Jackson! And

56:29

then everyone else goes, Hole! It's

56:32

like Durin in Rings

56:34

of Power. Kazad! Doom! You

56:37

know what? That is better. And

56:39

I think you should send Tommy a

56:41

raven. Craig, Craig, let

56:43

me talk to you. I've

56:46

been to your ear for a second here.

56:49

Come here, Craig Mazin. I know you're behind your

56:51

noble, but I got ideas. How

56:53

do you guys feel about shouting

56:55

whole? Dude, I have this in

56:57

all cabs, just L -O -L -O -L

56:59

-O -L. It's so fucking funny. Jackson,

57:01

hold. No one will penetrate

57:03

the hole this day. I know that

57:05

it's a real place and that we

57:07

are infantile, but it's funny. It

57:09

is funny. Come on. Have some fun

57:11

with this. They've got these little ramps

57:13

that pop out on the wall. I

57:16

like this design engineering here because that

57:18

way the flammable barrels can go far

57:20

away from the wall to explode is

57:22

why they invented those. They've got a

57:24

great plan going. It's a good design.

57:26

They're shooting the zombies, but mostly they're shooting

57:29

the barrels so they can leak out

57:31

their flammable juice. And then they've got some

57:33

torches to throw. Light them up down

57:35

at the barrel so they can explode. And

57:37

at first it's like, oh, they got

57:39

them. You know, there's a lot of explosions,

57:41

but there's so many zombies that it

57:43

barely seems to make a dent. And

57:47

Joel sees the fires and the walls and the

57:49

distances. We got to go back, but

57:51

they can't abbey that fucking abbey.

57:53

She insists they go to the

57:55

lodge. Like, no, we My friends

57:57

can help. We can fight. We'll

57:59

help you. Don't worry, Joel,

58:01

we got you. We'll all

58:03

run down there and knock them

58:05

out. I like the idea

58:08

of, even though she's still putting up

58:10

this facade of friendliness, she still throws

58:12

stank into his name. Like, don't worry,

58:14

Joel. Yeah, her eyes narrow every time.

58:16

Why do your eyes narrow every time you

58:18

say my name? We

58:20

got six people. We'll turn the

58:22

tad. Do you get a problem with

58:24

me or something? Do

58:26

I smell bad? Dita, what the fuck's her problem?

58:29

They cut to the top of the

58:31

wall. There's hella bullet casings and

58:33

so many burning zombie zombies. But then

58:36

a bloater shows up and the

58:38

horde starts to turn. That's if the

58:40

bloater's like, come on over here.

58:42

There's a hole in the wall. To

58:44

me. I'm telling you, Twin

58:46

Towers, he's the one running with the

58:48

bomb thing. Not

58:50

Twin Towers, Andy.

58:53

That's 9 -11. All

58:55

right. We all remember

58:57

that you're thinking of

58:59

Helms Deep Mr. President

59:01

a second floater has

59:03

arrived at Jackson Hole

59:05

I gotta cut all

59:07

this out don't I?

59:09

I don't think you

59:12

do I think it's

59:14

the least of what

59:16

we say here But

59:18

he's like they're gonna breach like

59:20

Tommy realizes they're gonna make it through

59:22

so he abandons the wall. It's

59:24

interesting because they're playing with this idea

59:26

that the infected are evolving because

59:28

yeah at some point the runners all

59:30

start running away from the wall

59:32

and sort of running with the bloater

59:34

and allowing him to break through

59:36

the wall like there is seems to

59:38

be like a hive mind intelligence

59:41

happening here. That wasn't necessarily happening in

59:43

the games. For sure. It's

59:45

also interesting that Tommy doesn't know

59:47

that all he needs is a

59:49

nail bomb, and he would have

59:51

saved everyone from that bloater. That's

59:53

true. Snap

59:55

a tone, bring him down.

59:57

I can't get him. I'm trying.

1:00:00

He's squarely. He's

1:00:03

doing a zigzag. No, he's running into

1:00:05

the straight line. You sure? Oh,

1:00:08

that's just my shakes. I

1:00:11

didn't have my cough syrup this morning.

1:00:14

It breaks the wall. That's on me

1:00:16

again, gang. I'm sorry. Here

1:00:19

he comes. I did my

1:00:21

best. I'm not going to lie.

1:00:23

There's no bullets in my gun. Tell

1:00:25

my best friend, Seth, I love him. Oh

1:00:32

no, not you two.

1:00:34

No tone. But

1:00:39

Tommy goes and warns the rooftop folks

1:00:41

and suits up with a flamethrower. And

1:00:43

there's four flamethrower guys, one of which

1:00:45

is Seth. They're like, okay,

1:00:47

we're all that stands between the town

1:00:49

and destruction now that Sniper Tone failed.

1:00:52

We're here to make that hot knife so

1:00:54

it can cut through this town like

1:00:56

butter. But then two flamethrowers run immediately. Tommy

1:00:58

sees that the bloater is going for

1:01:00

Maria's building because she's been shooting the bloater

1:01:02

a bunch. And he's like, he's like,

1:01:04

oh, fuck, gotta save my wife. Cowboys

1:01:07

through all the people with his

1:01:09

little pistol and pisses off the bloater

1:01:11

with his gun to get him

1:01:13

to chase him and save Maria But

1:01:15

then Maria gets attacked anyway, but

1:01:17

by runners and stuff a lot of

1:01:19

her rooftop buddies die and she

1:01:21

has to roll out And then Tommy

1:01:23

ends up trapped in this like

1:01:25

alley fighting the bloater alone And he's

1:01:27

blasting with that flamethrower and it's

1:01:29

not fucking working And then

1:01:32

the last second it does work and

1:01:34

the bloater keels over right before he

1:01:36

kills Tommy I saw those terrifying. I

1:01:38

saw some people judge in the scene,

1:01:40

but I thought it was a Terrifying

1:01:42

but be this is how the game

1:01:44

is like those bloaters just kind of

1:01:46

eventually go me Yeah, I actually this

1:01:48

is the scene that works the least

1:01:50

for me in the show. You're

1:01:52

correct. When you see

1:01:55

a bloater, you put those things on

1:01:57

fire immediately so they can keep their

1:01:59

damage going and then eventually they'll just

1:02:01

fall over. But there were some

1:02:03

things I think they could have changed subtly and

1:02:05

it would work better for me. Like if it was

1:02:07

still on fire when it fell or if Tommy

1:02:09

just like when it fell, he would pull it up

1:02:11

and just panic shot it a couple more times. But

1:02:14

just the way it filmed, I wasn't necessarily, I

1:02:16

didn't think it was terrifying. In the

1:02:18

moment and then we just it was

1:02:21

just very like I like I wrote

1:02:23

in my notes womp womp Well, it

1:02:25

was still on fire like whit no,

1:02:27

it was like smoky and not like

1:02:29

active like the fire was like going

1:02:31

out It wasn't like for me it

1:02:33

needed to be like on fire not

1:02:35

going out The fire was like working

1:02:37

its way into its head, and I

1:02:39

thought that was what actually finished it

1:02:41

off. Yeah, it was like when you

1:02:43

have an actual fire, Steve, and you

1:02:46

have like the logs on top are

1:02:48

like, wow. I needed the

1:02:50

hua. No, I know like what they're for.

1:02:52

There's like a deep flame. just saying it doesn't

1:02:54

look as cool. Yeah. I was

1:02:56

scared for Tommy. I think that would be

1:02:58

terrifying, especially when he's

1:03:00

just like, fuck. You know, it's

1:03:04

gonna suck so bad when it gets over here. But

1:03:07

also the lead up to that too. But you're not

1:03:09

alone. I've seen a lot of people say that that was

1:03:11

a dud. The lead up to

1:03:13

it too is a little eyebrow raising

1:03:15

because he's in the middle of the

1:03:17

horde on the street and like all

1:03:20

the other infected just running past him,

1:03:22

not caring. And he's like, hey you

1:03:24

motherfucker, come here big guy. Like it's

1:03:26

a little stretching of the imagination. And

1:03:28

I'm just kind of like. Okay, and

1:03:30

then like just them going to the

1:03:32

alley and then it just has sort

1:03:34

of a anti climactic fall over it

1:03:36

just didn't I don't I don't think

1:03:38

it was as Cool as they were

1:03:40

hoping it would be I hear you

1:03:43

I Think it I think it kind

1:03:45

of works because there's so much going

1:03:47

on and imagine You know me you

1:03:49

and Andy are running through just that

1:03:51

street with cheeseburgers. And there's cheeseburgers everywhere.

1:03:54

There's cheeseburgers falling off rooftops and sitting

1:03:56

there throwing fries at us. And

1:03:58

are the cheeseburgers throwing us? Yeah.

1:04:01

We might run past a couple

1:04:03

of cheeseburgers because we're locked in on

1:04:05

another cheeseburger. You know, like that

1:04:07

one's got bacon. That one's got bacon.

1:04:10

You see what I'm saying? Sure.

1:04:12

That's how I feel like he got away

1:04:14

with it. Because he's like, he shoots a couple

1:04:16

that do go for him. and some of

1:04:18

the others run past because they're going for other

1:04:20

burgers, you know? The

1:04:22

way you broke it down for me like

1:04:25

that. Didn't help at all. I

1:04:28

award you no points. Now,

1:04:31

if you change the metaphor to pizzas, maybe.

1:04:34

Nothing you said even approaches a

1:04:36

coherent thought. Maria's

1:04:40

running through the chaos. I'm

1:04:43

going to say something. I

1:04:45

love Joel. It

1:04:47

was devastating. All the

1:04:49

Maria and Tommy stuff really got to

1:04:51

me and works and is all

1:04:53

show invention here. And it was making

1:04:55

me cry. I'm not

1:04:58

even the biggest like animal

1:05:00

lover. Definitely the lowest on

1:05:02

the totem pole of this

1:05:04

crowd, you three, you two.

1:05:07

But when she goes and lets the dogs

1:05:09

out, I was like, no.

1:05:12

You know what I mean? Not

1:05:15

the doggies. Well, I mean,

1:05:17

Paw Patrol turned the tide of the battle.

1:05:19

They It wasn't Cypertone, it was the Paw

1:05:21

Patrol. But

1:05:23

yeah, it is kind of a,

1:05:25

what are they going to do other

1:05:27

than take out 20 infected and

1:05:29

then maybe hopefully like, I don't know.

1:05:31

And imagine when they get infected

1:05:33

and you have these rabid fucking pit

1:05:35

bulls running around, trying, murdering all

1:05:37

the people. They obviously had to put

1:05:40

them down, Andy. I

1:05:42

don't know if it's the same in

1:05:44

the show, but in the game, Cordyceps

1:05:46

only affects humans. It

1:05:48

doesn't affect animals. Well,

1:05:51

they run past Tommy. They're the reason

1:05:53

he's alive is because she let those dogs

1:05:55

out. And it's like this triumphant moment

1:05:57

where the dogs rush past and Tommy's like,

1:06:00

good move, Fido. Operation Baja,

1:06:02

man, go. The

1:06:05

answer to the age old

1:06:07

question. Who let them dogs out?

1:06:09

Maria did. Abby's crew

1:06:11

are out looking for her because she hasn't

1:06:13

returned from her watch yet. And

1:06:15

then at that point, Abby, Joel and Dina make it to

1:06:17

the lodge. They start tending

1:06:19

to everybody. Dina's got some frostbite. Everybody's

1:06:21

being cool and nice. They

1:06:24

do make a point to see, to

1:06:26

show that Dina sees the WLF logo on

1:06:28

one of the backpacks. Who

1:06:30

are you guys? And

1:06:32

Joel's trying to order everybody around, which is way

1:06:34

different than the games. He's like super chill. Like,

1:06:36

what's up? You guys got any coffee? There's

1:06:39

also not a, there's not a horde attacking

1:06:41

the town. That's what I'm saying. That decision

1:06:43

affects the entire dynamic of this scene is

1:06:45

what I'm saying. And when they, yeah, when

1:06:48

they ride up on the lodge in the

1:06:50

game, the hoarders, what hoard there is, it's

1:06:52

much smaller. There's like 20 of them as

1:06:54

opposed to thousands. Like the crew helped them

1:06:56

kill them. So they're like, oh man, that

1:06:58

was great. You guys cool. Good to fight.

1:07:01

How's it going? You guys got some jockey

1:07:03

milk? Hey, I'm Joel. Yeah.

1:07:05

Yeah. And Joel says, all right. we're

1:07:07

shipping out in three minutes, grab your

1:07:09

gear. And Abby's like, okay,

1:07:11

that's Dina. She tries to make

1:07:13

it kind of organic, but also dramatic.

1:07:15

And she goes, and he is

1:07:17

Joel. And

1:07:20

they all, they pull a gun on

1:07:22

Dina and then point guns at Joel.

1:07:24

And everything happens so fast. Put

1:07:26

her to sleep. I'm gonna smash

1:07:28

her fucking head in. Right? It's

1:07:30

like, Abby is three steps above

1:07:32

everybody else, right? And

1:07:35

he's like, look, if you're trying to rob us,

1:07:37

it's just take, I got $3 on me. And

1:07:41

You look like Raiders to you. Do we look

1:07:43

like Raiders? What do we look like? And he goes,

1:07:45

soldiers, fireflies. And

1:07:49

at the same time they're putting Dina to

1:07:51

sleep. Again, there's an anesthesiologist in the mix,

1:07:53

luckily. And so

1:07:55

she, I'm gonna put you to sleep. I did

1:07:57

like this though, like it's trying to show that they

1:07:59

are good people in every way that they can

1:08:01

in the sense of like, This is

1:08:03

going to put you to sleep for one hour. I promise. And

1:08:05

then she looks at Joel. I promise,

1:08:07

right? Like calm down. She's not going to

1:08:10

die. Yeah, I can't

1:08:12

say anything about it. I'm not to make any

1:08:14

promises there. Right. This scene

1:08:16

is so funny to me. Maybe it was

1:08:18

in the games. I don't remember it. But

1:08:20

Abby's got this whole thing. It was sinister

1:08:22

in episode one where she's like, he's got

1:08:24

a scar above his eye. He's about six

1:08:26

feet tall. They said he was handsome. But

1:08:29

when she brings it back here, it's.

1:08:33

It's strange. Because it implies

1:08:35

that the few survivors

1:08:37

of that massacre were like,

1:08:39

he was hot though. Why

1:08:42

is that in Psychopath though? There

1:08:44

was his daddy running around with a

1:08:46

gun and stuff. There was a

1:08:48

kindness to his eyes. There's

1:08:50

this total caked up Zaddy

1:08:52

running around Salt Lake. And

1:08:56

then when Abby sees him through

1:08:58

her rage and hatred, she's like,

1:09:01

I see it. Can

1:09:04

I get it? Oh my

1:09:06

God. It's

1:09:08

funny. But yeah, she's like, you

1:09:10

are handsome. Holy shit. How's that? That's good

1:09:12

for you. I'm so happy for you, right? And

1:09:16

she tells me there's one chance to tell

1:09:18

the truth. Where was the last place you

1:09:20

saw the fireflies? And he looks at Dina

1:09:22

and he's thinking about protecting her because she's

1:09:24

like, well, fucking kill her if you lie.

1:09:27

And then Mel's like, but wait. And he's

1:09:29

like, shut the fuck up, Mel. Doing

1:09:32

the thing. Jesus. This

1:09:34

is the second time you've been like, huh? And

1:09:37

he says Salt

1:09:40

Lake. And she says, well, at least you're not

1:09:42

a liar, right? And then

1:09:44

in this scene, he says, I

1:09:46

saved your life. And she

1:09:48

says, what life? And shoots his

1:09:50

leg, right? Kneecaps him. Bam.

1:09:54

And then just like the game, she says, turn

1:09:56

a kid him. And Owen's like, just do what

1:09:58

we came here to do, because they're all hesitant to

1:10:00

do torture bit, right? So she wants them alive

1:10:02

as long as possible for what's to come. We

1:10:05

all agreed, mostly me, but we

1:10:07

all agreed we would do it slowly.

1:10:10

I know there's a town on fire, thousands

1:10:12

of infected around, but we got

1:10:14

time. We got to make a meal of

1:10:16

this. And she asked Joel,

1:10:18

did you count as you went? Or

1:10:20

just kind of wasn't thinking about it,

1:10:22

right? But she says he killed 18

1:10:24

soldiers. and one doctor.

1:10:27

And in the game, it's more like a hundred,

1:10:29

but whatever. I don't know

1:10:31

about you guys, but I was cooking with that

1:10:33

AR. And

1:10:36

then she says, that was my

1:10:38

dad. I was 19. So

1:10:41

the same age that Ellie is now is

1:10:43

how old she was when she found her

1:10:45

dad's brains on the ground. She's now part

1:10:47

of a militia in Seattle, the WLF. And

1:10:50

she's like, we got a rule. We don't kill

1:10:52

people that can't defend themselves. which

1:10:55

right now is you, but

1:10:57

I'm about to break that rule. I

1:11:00

like that there's a little bit of a,

1:11:02

cause she says you did something, something like

1:11:04

you did something that everyone agrees is fucked

1:11:06

up, right? Like everyone

1:11:08

in the world. And like some

1:11:10

things, no matter where you come from, people

1:11:12

will agree is messed up and wrong. And he

1:11:15

kind of nods. You know what

1:11:17

I mean? Like he's kind of, he's like,

1:11:19

you ain't wrong. I don't feel good about

1:11:21

it. I have a therapist now. She smokes

1:11:23

a lot of weed and she's not very

1:11:25

helpful, but I'm working on it. I did

1:11:27

kill her husband though. Listen, listen.

1:11:30

It was actually 19. Oh

1:11:32

no. I killed so many people. I hit

1:11:34

a lot of bodies you didn't find. Oh,

1:11:37

you only found 19? I

1:11:40

did count and you're way off. Listen,

1:11:42

the whole skull fucking thing, they were like that before

1:11:44

found them. He

1:11:49

says, And

1:11:51

then she sees the golf clubs, and

1:11:53

I think it's so awesome, like as

1:11:56

fans of the game, as soon as

1:11:58

it shows the bag of golf clubs,

1:12:00

the golf bag, you're like,

1:12:02

oh shit, they're gonna do it. I

1:12:06

love the bit. In the game, he

1:12:08

does something kind of similar, not quite this

1:12:10

line, but she starts to say something

1:12:12

else as she gets to the clubs, and

1:12:14

he goes, just shut the fuck up

1:12:16

and do it already. Yeah. Yeah,

1:12:18

I think in the game it's something like,

1:12:20

you know, say whatever speech you got prepared

1:12:22

and get on with it. Yeah. Yeah. And

1:12:24

this time it's just shut the fuck up and

1:12:26

do it. I love that dude. He's such

1:12:28

a bad motherfucker. It's awesome. And

1:12:30

she, well, you gotta think he

1:12:33

knows he's gonna die and it's gotta

1:12:35

be as somebody who has like

1:12:37

this anxiety of anticipation kind of similar

1:12:39

to this. I could see that

1:12:41

outburst and I wouldn't be being tough.

1:12:43

I'm just like, It would just

1:12:45

be an explosion of anxiety that would make me

1:12:47

say something like that. Like this is so much

1:12:49

worse than you just doing it. He

1:12:52

just got kneecap though, dude. I'd be

1:12:54

there going. I know,

1:12:56

right? That's true. He's

1:12:59

like just another day that ends with why

1:13:01

for me. So she grabs a

1:13:03

club and she says the line from the

1:13:05

game. Listen, old fucker or whatever.

1:13:07

You don't get to rush. stupid old man.

1:13:09

Yeah, you stupid old man. You don't get to

1:13:11

rush this. And then she hits his leg. repeatedly.

1:13:16

It's brutal. Ellie

1:13:18

is writing around looking for him. She

1:13:20

sees that Jackson's on fire and then

1:13:22

she sees the tracks leading up to

1:13:24

the lodge. She chooses the tracks, right?

1:13:26

Because just like Joel, she's going to

1:13:28

make the choice to save her person

1:13:30

and not the collective. And I

1:13:32

think that's important. That's a good call out. and

1:13:35

she could necessarily save Jackson,

1:13:37

but it's not the point, motherfuckers.

1:13:40

They might not be able to get

1:13:42

there in time with the snow

1:13:44

going too. She's riding up on the

1:13:46

lodge while Abby is beating him,

1:13:48

and then she sees the horses, she

1:13:50

sneaks in, gun drawn, knife drawn,

1:13:52

she's got the little like, you know,

1:13:54

that's the fucking assassin move, you

1:13:56

know, you got both. It's

1:13:59

TQC. And she hears

1:14:01

the beating. and

1:14:04

goes in knife and gun drawn

1:14:06

and then gets got immediately, but she

1:14:08

does slice Manny who in the

1:14:10

games is Jordan that she slices And

1:14:12

Joel is just there twitching. He's

1:14:14

been beaten to a pulp at this

1:14:16

point and Claire's corner Last time

1:14:18

I'll reference it, but I don't remember

1:14:21

this because I haven't played it

1:14:23

that many times But they were talking

1:14:25

about how in the games you

1:14:27

come in in the front room with

1:14:29

all the windows in the light

1:14:31

You have to descend down into the

1:14:33

dark basement and it's like this

1:14:35

descent into hell. Yes. And

1:14:37

they like that much better than

1:14:39

this all occurring in this lit room

1:14:41

in the front. I

1:14:43

was actually thinking the same

1:14:46

thing. Just that's

1:14:48

my preference. But what they're

1:14:50

doing with the show, I like what they're

1:14:52

doing with the show where even while all

1:14:54

this is going on, you can see in

1:14:56

the background Jackson on fire the entire time.

1:14:58

So it does, I see what they're doing.

1:15:00

They're trying to raise the stakes not only

1:15:03

for Joel, not only for Ellie, but for

1:15:05

the whole community. It does have this weight

1:15:07

of urgency now that you see Jackson also

1:15:09

on fire because Jackson is not part of

1:15:11

this whole scenario. Jackson whole

1:15:13

scenario. Yeah. I

1:15:15

like that. I like that. But I know

1:15:17

what they're doing for the show. My

1:15:19

preference is still the game, but I do

1:15:22

appreciate what they're doing in the show.

1:15:24

I think it's a smart choice if that's

1:15:26

also happening at the same time. Agreed.

1:15:30

As soon as they take out Ellie, Owen's

1:15:32

like, end it. Like, know, you've had

1:15:34

your fun with the torture and stuff like, let's get the fuck out

1:15:36

of here. Now other people are getting involved.

1:15:40

And Abby picks up the broken golf

1:15:42

club because she's beaten him so

1:15:44

long that the iron is broken. And

1:15:47

then she very methodically

1:15:49

stabs him with it. And

1:15:51

Ellie is distraught, we'll just

1:15:53

say. She's begging him.

1:15:55

She's begging him not to. This is

1:15:57

so awful because it's Ellie, right?

1:15:59

She's, you know, just such a sassy

1:16:01

little gremlin of a person that

1:16:03

we all love, right? And she's begging

1:16:06

them. not to do this. Like,

1:16:08

cause this person, oh, I'm getting choked

1:16:10

up now. This person means so

1:16:12

much to her and she's actually, like

1:16:14

this is something we never really

1:16:16

see Ellie do is beg. And she,

1:16:18

and that's heartbreaking. She, the part

1:16:20

that destroyed me, she is

1:16:22

begging Joel to get up, just

1:16:24

get up, get up. And he

1:16:26

fucking tries. He lifts his head

1:16:28

a little bit, yeah. Even though he's barely alive,

1:16:31

he's got that shotgun wound to the knee. He's

1:16:33

been beat with a golf club for 10 straight

1:16:35

minutes and punched in the face over and over

1:16:37

by Abby. And as soon as Ellie

1:16:39

is like, please get up, like he'll do

1:16:41

anything for her. He tries. There's no strength

1:16:43

in his body, but he twitches like he's

1:16:45

trying to get up. And why

1:16:47

would I let him do that? The

1:16:51

king in the north arises. Bring

1:16:56

back the two towers again, the

1:16:58

twin towers. And

1:17:01

yeah, she stabs him, Ellie screams,

1:17:04

I'm gonna kill you. You're all

1:17:06

gonna fucking die. And the

1:17:08

guy she cut, Manny, kicks her really

1:17:10

hard. And then they all kind of

1:17:12

leave. And then we

1:17:14

have to watch Ellie crawl

1:17:16

to Joel's body, pull

1:17:18

that club out, and then

1:17:20

lay on his mutilated face

1:17:23

and cry. Oh.

1:17:26

And then they fucking played through

1:17:28

the valley. I know. I

1:17:31

was barely hanging

1:17:33

on. And then

1:17:35

we get that, I

1:17:37

walk through the valley

1:17:39

of a shadow. And

1:17:41

it's Ashley Johnson's version, which

1:17:44

is the version. Oh

1:17:46

my God, dude. You

1:17:48

bastards. Yeah. And

1:17:50

through that song, Abby and the crew

1:17:52

walk away. We see Jesse's horse approaching

1:17:54

as they do so. And

1:17:57

we see this dude who got

1:17:59

an arm bite handing his pistol to

1:18:01

a comrade to do the work,

1:18:03

my friend. That's intense. What

1:18:06

a real one. Shout out to that,

1:18:08

dude. He's like, I'm just glad it's not

1:18:10

Joel. Did Toad

1:18:12

make it? I've

1:18:14

been trying to shoot him for 10 minutes.

1:18:19

Someone else have a go at him. I'm

1:18:21

having a little trouble. He keeps moving.

1:18:23

Oh, nope. That's just the shakes again. But

1:18:26

the town clears everyone out. They're

1:18:29

just offing everybody who got bit. And

1:18:32

there's a scene where Maria

1:18:34

and Tommy find each other

1:18:36

in the chaos and they

1:18:38

hug. But Tommy is

1:18:40

so overcome with grief, the

1:18:42

adrenaline wearing off all the

1:18:44

stuff where he starts to

1:18:46

like buckle and fall and Maria

1:18:48

is the one that keeps him

1:18:51

on his feet and all like it

1:18:53

made me start to cry like

1:18:55

immediately again. Like I thought I was

1:18:57

getting over the Joel stuff and

1:18:59

then that happens. I'm like, oh, why?

1:19:01

I didn't even know this was

1:19:03

going to affect me. Yeah. The Tommy

1:19:05

and Maria embraces is huge. Um,

1:19:07

and then Dina, Ellie and Jesse are

1:19:09

riding back and Ellie's like hyperventilating

1:19:11

and they're dragging Joel back to Jackson.

1:19:14

And that's the end of episode

1:19:16

two. Oh, baby. What

1:19:18

a way to end that episode.

1:19:22

And now it's time to talk about our favorite

1:19:24

we're back. It's time to discuss

1:22:48

our favorite moments from this episode,

1:22:50

our firefly moments. Our

1:22:52

clicker -stakers. Clicker -stakers, our

1:22:54

top three. Andy,

1:22:56

what is your number three? Uh,

1:22:59

my number three is when Jesse comes

1:23:01

and picks Ellie up for patrol. I just

1:23:03

thought it was so fun and so

1:23:05

endearing when he's just messing with her. Like,

1:23:07

yeah, I heard it was a crazy

1:23:09

night last night and she's all flustered. Like,

1:23:11

she kissed me and like, she probably

1:23:13

didn't even remember. It's fine. And when he

1:23:15

pokes his head back in with that,

1:23:17

that's pretty fucked up what she did though.

1:23:19

That was just such a sweet endearing

1:23:21

moment. And, uh, I don't know. It's fun

1:23:23

to see the good times because in

1:23:26

a show like this, you don't get a

1:23:28

ton of levity. And so when we

1:23:30

get those types of moments, they're extra impactful.

1:23:32

And it's important for making the sad

1:23:35

stuff even sadder too. Yeah.

1:23:38

Steve? My number three

1:23:40

is the beginning of the Horde invasion

1:23:42

on Jackson. I just

1:23:44

really liked sort of the extra lore

1:23:46

that they're building on top of Jackson

1:23:48

because we didn't really get to see

1:23:50

them fight the Horde in the game. And

1:23:53

I like how they have like a whole plan

1:23:55

and it's a good, it's a pretty good plan.

1:23:57

They've got those oil barrel ramps and stuff. It

1:23:59

was just really cool to see that play out.

1:24:01

Not a lot of like super big character growth

1:24:03

or anything, but it was just a feast for

1:24:05

the eyes and the spectacle was there and I

1:24:07

enjoyed the spectacle of it. But Kit, what about

1:24:09

you? You're number three. I have

1:24:11

the same as Andy's. I really enjoyed

1:24:13

that moment between Jesse and Ellie and it

1:24:16

shows how we've had multiple instances of

1:24:18

how deep their friendship goes. But

1:24:20

it's just such a. good

1:24:22

setup for the misery to follow. Yeah,

1:24:25

that's my number three. Andy, your number

1:24:27

two. My number two

1:24:29

is the Abbey being chased by

1:24:31

all the clickers once they like

1:24:34

come out of the ground and

1:24:36

shit. And we get this awesome

1:24:38

daylight horror of her running through

1:24:40

the snow and immediately like getting

1:24:42

trapped beneath that fence and stuff.

1:24:44

The zombies pushing their hands through

1:24:46

the grates of the fence and

1:24:48

stuff is so gnarly and that

1:24:51

have all of that like crazy

1:24:53

tension and awesome action, just this

1:24:55

chef's kiss of a plot twist

1:24:57

to have it be Joel that

1:24:59

is firing the gun that saves

1:25:01

her and stuff. It's just such

1:25:03

good writing, both from the game

1:25:05

and how they portrayed it in

1:25:08

the show, just genius and so

1:25:10

terrifying and just great, great horror.

1:25:13

Steve, my number two

1:25:15

is your guys number three, the scene

1:25:17

with... and Jesse. I would

1:25:19

sort of expand it, not only where you

1:25:21

guys were talking about, but even when they're

1:25:23

walking through Jackson talking about the horde that's

1:25:25

coming up and she's like, you know, suck

1:25:27

my dick, you know, being all funny with

1:25:29

him. But then when she turns around and

1:25:31

it says, like, I am me and Joel

1:25:33

is Joel and we are who we are,

1:25:35

quit talking about us. Like, all of that

1:25:37

stuff is great because not only does it

1:25:39

set up the relationship she has with Jesse, But

1:25:42

it also recontextualizes her relationship

1:25:44

with Joel for anybody who

1:25:46

forgot who we're dealing with

1:25:48

here. I appreciated that. I

1:25:51

thought Bella Ramsey's performance was wonderful in this

1:25:53

scene as well. So what's your number two,

1:25:55

Kit? Agreed. Mine is

1:25:57

Andy's number two as well, as

1:25:59

we were two for two so

1:26:01

far. But the frozen clicker field,

1:26:03

I thought, was legitimately terrifying, even

1:26:05

as you're with Abby, who you

1:26:07

maybe don't... Either don't know that

1:26:09

well or care about much yet

1:26:11

or maybe you do and you

1:26:13

hate her But for me it

1:26:15

was it was I was feeling

1:26:17

for I was terrified I had

1:26:19

it And again running through the

1:26:21

subzero temperatures with that giant horde

1:26:23

behind you and then the fence

1:26:25

scene It was just like I

1:26:27

was fucking heart pounding. I thought

1:26:29

it was so well done Andy

1:26:31

what's your number one? It's

1:26:33

gotta be the the big moment. Abby

1:26:35

and Joel showdown. She's like, I'll give

1:26:38

you one chance to tell the truth

1:26:40

than he does. And she kneecaps him

1:26:42

and starts to monologue. He has his

1:26:44

bad motherfucker moment of just shut the

1:26:46

fuck up and do it already. So

1:26:49

I'll call that like the climactic

1:26:51

moment part one, you know before

1:26:54

Ellie shows up and stuff and

1:26:56

I love all of that too

1:26:58

But especially the showdown where Joel's

1:27:00

realizing who they are what's happening

1:27:02

all of the consequences of the

1:27:04

choices that he's made in his

1:27:06

life are kind of coming to

1:27:08

a head in that moment and

1:27:10

I think that the performances between

1:27:13

both of them Pedro and Caitlyn

1:27:15

are just phenomenal Steve I guess

1:27:17

mine would be that The scene

1:27:19

part two like I really love

1:27:21

the part where Ellie gets involved.

1:27:24

You know you see Joel. Just

1:27:26

battered and bruised and Ellie get up

1:27:28

Joel get up and he does his

1:27:30

attempt and and then she starts begging

1:27:32

them but she doesn't listen and they

1:27:34

they kill him and it's awful and

1:27:37

that she crawls over to him and

1:27:39

it holds him. And that's

1:27:41

how the scene ends it's really

1:27:43

just so sad and just

1:27:45

such a gut punch like Manny

1:27:47

literally. Gut kicked Ellie, but

1:27:49

I feel like he might as well have been doing that

1:27:51

to me as well in this scene. It's

1:27:54

really well done. And again, like I

1:27:56

said at the top the show, this is

1:27:58

an unenviable task to try to recreate

1:28:00

this moment and do it justice. And I

1:28:02

think they did. I think they succeeded

1:28:04

overall. But what's your number one favorite

1:28:06

moment, Kit? My number one

1:28:09

favorite moment, it is that,

1:28:11

but it's specifically when the notes

1:28:13

of Through the Valley come

1:28:15

in. And and we're we're sitting

1:28:17

with what just happened and

1:28:19

that beautiful song is playing and

1:28:22

we're We know that we're

1:28:24

never gonna be okay again. It's

1:28:26

like You just had your

1:28:28

cheeks clapped for two straight hours

1:28:30

Go on and you put

1:28:33

that cigarette filter to your lips

1:28:35

and you click the lighter

1:28:37

and it's Through

1:28:42

the valley. Is

1:28:45

that your post nut clarity

1:28:47

song? You're just contemplating, you know,

1:28:49

what have I done? What

1:28:53

have I done with my life? Where's

1:28:56

my life led me? I

1:28:59

don't even like this guy. a

1:29:01

tragedy. Terrible

1:29:04

analogy. It was a transcendent

1:29:07

moment for me. Through the

1:29:09

valleys, my number one. which

1:29:11

brings us to bullets and

1:29:13

pills. Pills, baby! Our

1:29:15

Easter eggs and, you know,

1:29:18

references to the game, maybe

1:29:20

some early odds, pulls that we can

1:29:22

glean, things like that. Andy, do you have

1:29:24

anything? Not really, other

1:29:26

than to say that that song

1:29:28

they used in the reveal trailer for

1:29:30

The Last of Us Part 2,

1:29:32

and it was at like a live

1:29:35

PlayStation experience thing in like PlayStation

1:29:37

Experience 2016. Yeah. First time we ever

1:29:39

saw Last of Us Part 2

1:29:41

was this song. and there's clips of

1:29:43

it on youtube with the audience

1:29:45

reaction you know it opens just with

1:29:48

this derelict road and the camera

1:29:50

keeps pulling back and then finally you

1:29:52

see a street sign with the

1:29:54

firefight logo spray painted on it and

1:29:56

the crowd loses their god damn

1:29:58

minds and then it cuts to ellie

1:30:01

sitting there in this torn up

1:30:03

house starts playing this song and it's

1:30:05

just. one of the most iconic

1:30:07

i'm getting chills thinking about it because

1:30:09

i was watching it live when

1:30:11

it happened and it was obviously i

1:30:13

wasn't in the the theater but

1:30:16

i was watching on the internet and

1:30:18

it was this like seminal moment

1:30:20

like oh my god they're making another

1:30:22

one because the story felt finished

1:30:24

so when you find out you're getting

1:30:26

a part two it it was

1:30:29

a mind -blowing Situation but

1:30:31

yeah, I just want to shout

1:30:33

out that the song and its

1:30:35

association with the last of us

1:30:37

originated there. And that that trailer

1:30:39

is really fun to revisit now

1:30:41

because. With the context

1:30:43

of having played the game and now have caught

1:30:45

up on the show. They

1:30:47

know they tricked you because the way the way

1:30:49

it's played the way the trailer works is like

1:30:51

Ellie picks up the guitar she starts singing. Ashley

1:30:54

Johnson, who voices Ellie in the games, is

1:30:56

singing it, and she sings the version of the

1:30:58

show as well. And you

1:31:00

see all these dead bodies that are on the

1:31:02

floor, and Joel walks in almost like through a

1:31:04

bright light in the door. He sort of morphs

1:31:06

into the room. And you think Joel's joining her,

1:31:08

because he goes like, you really going through with

1:31:10

this kid? And she's like, I'm going to kill

1:31:13

every single last one of them. And that's how

1:31:15

it ends. So they trick you into think Joel

1:31:17

and Ellie are strapping them together for another adventure,

1:31:19

but really after you

1:31:21

know what happens, it's just her memory of

1:31:23

Joel that she's talking to and not actually

1:31:25

him in the trailer. It's

1:31:27

so expertly done. Great. How you

1:31:29

doing kiddo? I

1:31:31

see you killed all these people. That's pretty

1:31:33

cool. Did you do the skull

1:31:36

fucking move I taught you? It's

1:31:38

so good, man. And that was a

1:31:40

devastating, you're right in retrospect,

1:31:42

but such a good teaser. That's actually how

1:31:44

Andy, that was his last ditch effort to

1:31:46

try to get me to play the first

1:31:48

game was make me watch

1:31:50

that with no context. It's

1:31:53

like, look how good this is. I don't know who any of these

1:31:55

people are. Like, yeah, it's

1:31:57

cool. It's cool. It's

1:31:59

a dope song. But

1:32:01

anyway, Steve, what do you got? I

1:32:04

got a couple. I would be remiss. We

1:32:06

missed this one last week, but a lot

1:32:09

of people were writing in and I thought

1:32:11

it was worth mentioning, but the band that

1:32:13

plays at the New Year's ball last scene.

1:32:15

Our last episode features

1:32:17

Gustavo Santa. Yeah, I

1:32:19

totally butchered that but he does all

1:32:22

the music for the last of his games

1:32:24

And so he's the guy like strumming.

1:32:26

He's got the beer and he's strumming the

1:32:28

guitar. That's who that is This is

1:32:30

a this is a rehash of a Bullets

1:32:32

and Pills baby from last season But

1:32:34

when we get that quick cutaway that quick

1:32:36

flashback That Joel gets where he

1:32:38

shoots the doctor and you see like the nurses

1:32:40

in the background for that brief second. Laura

1:32:43

Bailey, who plays Abby in the

1:32:45

game, is one of the nurses. So

1:32:48

she had a little cameo in the first

1:32:50

season, so it was nice to see her brought

1:32:52

back up in what is probably Abby's most

1:32:54

important scene in the entire show, or at least

1:32:56

the entire game, is what she does to

1:32:58

Joel. So that was nice to bring her back

1:33:00

in a little bit and be in that

1:33:02

scene a bit. Yeah,

1:33:04

and then there's a bunch of other

1:33:07

small things like the gas bomb is from

1:33:09

the game Eugene's farm we talked about

1:33:11

that briefly last episode we get a little

1:33:13

WLF badge Stuff like that, but Mostly

1:33:15

a lot of the stuff we kind of

1:33:17

already talked about like the chain link

1:33:19

fence section and all that is in the

1:33:21

game as well So those are the

1:33:23

big ones that I had well, I did

1:33:25

I meant to talk about this earlier,

1:33:28

but We kind of agreed that we like

1:33:30

almost all of the changes for the

1:33:32

show so far, if not all of them.

1:33:34

A lot of people are having problems

1:33:36

with, oh, why wasn't Tommy there? We like

1:33:38

all of that stuff. But the Eugene's

1:33:40

Farm is, I think, in the basement of

1:33:42

a library. It is, yeah. Not a

1:33:44

7 -Eleven. And because Ellie

1:33:46

is supposed to be there with

1:33:48

Dina, there's a very

1:33:50

important scene that happens in the game

1:33:53

is she and Dina have sex. Yeah.

1:33:56

And obviously that didn't happen because she's there with

1:33:58

Jesse instead and Dean is with Joel. And

1:34:02

I do think that's a

1:34:04

really important moment for their

1:34:07

characters because it's before all

1:34:09

of the storm happens. It's

1:34:11

Ellie's attempt to kind of have

1:34:13

a normal life and experience,

1:34:15

you know, growing up into

1:34:17

a young woman and this

1:34:19

last little bit of normal

1:34:21

life before. this terrible, terrible

1:34:23

tragedy, right? And that was kind of taken

1:34:25

from the story because they just put Jesse

1:34:27

there. And you know what I

1:34:29

mean? I don't hate it, but

1:34:31

it's just kind of a, it's a choice. Yeah.

1:34:35

Eugene's pot farm in the game is

1:34:37

much grander and much more impressive. Like,

1:34:39

whoa, he built all this. Wow. That's

1:34:41

so neat. But like, like we sort

1:34:43

of said earlier, they're, Removing characters and

1:34:45

inserting them in the places to effectively

1:34:47

tell the story with within the medium

1:34:49

that they have and I think they

1:34:51

did that because we already saw Dina

1:34:54

and Ellie Connecting like they were last

1:34:56

episode with like the dance and yes

1:34:58

in the game You hadn't seen the

1:35:00

dance yet. Yeah in the game the

1:35:02

the kissing which leads to sex is

1:35:04

in the pot farm is the first

1:35:06

intimacy they share as characters on screen

1:35:08

so we we get the fact that

1:35:11

we that they are starting a

1:35:13

relationship, but we also in this

1:35:15

episode get to see much more of

1:35:17

Jesse and Ellie's relationship and why

1:35:19

he's there and why he would be

1:35:21

motivated to help as well. And

1:35:24

because also like Dina in the game

1:35:26

is supposed to be the one that's

1:35:28

Eugene's sort of buddy, but they rewrote

1:35:30

that. So it's Jesse. So

1:35:32

I see what they're doing and I

1:35:34

don't hate it because I understand like

1:35:36

they got to like make cuts and

1:35:38

be sort of strategic and and picking

1:35:40

their moves. So I don't hate this,

1:35:42

but I understand why people would be

1:35:44

kind of sad to not see the

1:35:46

majesty that is Eugene's game pot farm. Well,

1:35:49

that brings us to our outbreak

1:35:51

performance, our favorite performance of episode

1:35:53

two. Andy, who are you going with? I

1:35:56

think I'm going to give it to Caitlin Dever. You

1:36:00

know, you hate the things that she

1:36:02

does, but you love the way that

1:36:04

she does them. you know, performance -wise

1:36:06

at least. And not

1:36:08

just, you know, her huge seminal

1:36:10

moment with Joel and, like,

1:36:12

all of this anger, like, finally,

1:36:14

like, being released for her,

1:36:16

but also, like, the sequences that

1:36:18

we got of her terrified

1:36:20

running, trying to hide and stuff.

1:36:23

I think that she's doing great work

1:36:25

and she's phenomenal casting to play

1:36:27

Abby, so I had to shout her

1:36:29

out. I've

1:36:31

been really waffling on who

1:36:33

to give mine to this

1:36:35

episode because I think there's

1:36:37

two choices. I

1:36:39

think it's Caitlyn Dever or

1:36:42

Bella Ramsey. And

1:36:45

ultimately, I

1:36:47

think I'm still gonna go with Caitlyn

1:36:49

Dever as well. But

1:36:51

Bella Ramsey, she has two standout

1:36:53

performances or two standout scenes in

1:36:55

this episode. That's the one with

1:36:57

her and Jessie where she's like,

1:36:59

I'm me. That's Joel, but then

1:37:02

also like the scene like like

1:37:04

almost I get choked up when

1:37:06

she's like, please don't like I'm

1:37:08

gonna kill you Such amazing work

1:37:10

I think I'm still gonna give

1:37:12

it to Caitlyn Deaver ultimately because

1:37:14

she's doing some really layered stuff

1:37:16

like even when she's Getting in

1:37:18

Joel's face that she delivers that

1:37:20

cold monologue like do you know

1:37:22

how many people you killed? And

1:37:24

like she's crying but

1:37:26

her face looks so Just

1:37:30

full of rage and you like

1:37:32

I don't know you can sort of

1:37:34

see like here's this character We

1:37:36

know she's mad she wants vengeance But

1:37:38

there's someone else behind there as

1:37:40

well that we haven't quite seen yet

1:37:43

And I think what she's doing

1:37:45

is really really impressive and subtle and

1:37:47

nuanced and I'm really excited to

1:37:49

see where she goes with this character

1:37:51

moving forward I think you're right

1:37:53

Steve everything you just said I back

1:37:55

up a hundred percent I

1:37:58

am also going to give it to Caitlin Dever. We

1:38:01

all everybody. We all everybody. I

1:38:04

do want to point out, I think

1:38:06

Bella Ramsey has said that they want

1:38:08

to use they them pronouns now. I

1:38:11

know that the first time I think the first

1:38:13

time we covered the show, they had said they didn't

1:38:15

care. Even though, you know,

1:38:17

they do identify as non -binary, but they didn't really

1:38:19

have a preference. And I think that that has

1:38:21

evolved. OK, good

1:38:23

to know. I just want to shout that out. I

1:38:26

think you're 100 % correct. I mean, I

1:38:28

had some things to say earlier in reflecting

1:38:30

some of the good things, or some of

1:38:32

the valid criticisms the fandom has and stuff,

1:38:34

but there is no doubt that Caitlyn Dever,

1:38:36

where it counts, is delivering

1:38:39

an excellent performance and channeling

1:38:41

so much hatred and rage,

1:38:43

and you're getting that it's

1:38:45

torturing them, and her loved

1:38:47

ones are seeing, like, I

1:38:49

want to help, but like,

1:38:51

you need therapy. I

1:38:53

think I know a person in Jackson

1:38:56

that's not gonna help, but we'll try,

1:38:58

you know, she needs to see Gail

1:39:00

for sure. Gail's

1:39:02

there to help. Yeah. As

1:39:04

soon as she meets Abby, she's like, I

1:39:06

fucking hate you. And she did actually says that

1:39:08

to everybody. She

1:39:11

uses all of them for her own

1:39:13

therapy. Yeah, I think

1:39:15

it's gonna be really interesting to

1:39:17

see how this plays out, especially

1:39:19

being split into two seasons. You

1:39:22

know, I was worried for the longest time that

1:39:24

they were going to try to keep Petra Pascal in

1:39:26

the show as long as possible and maybe ruin

1:39:28

this, but they went for it. I made a joke

1:39:30

at the top of the show. I don't even

1:39:32

remember if we were recording, but a lot of people

1:39:34

quit playing the game when Joel died. And I

1:39:36

wonder how many people are going to quit watching the

1:39:38

show when now that Petra Pascal is not in

1:39:40

it. But I think he only

1:39:42

agreed to do this because they told him he

1:39:44

would die because he's not like he's at

1:39:46

a point in his career where he's not like

1:39:48

a. show guy, you know? Yeah. And he

1:39:50

made a joke in an interview, like they took,

1:39:53

they promised me I would die. And, you

1:39:55

know, and he laughed, but like, I think that

1:39:57

probably was what they said, like, dude, you're

1:39:59

not gonna, don't worry, we need you for like

1:40:01

10 episodes. And he's like, okay. Thank

1:40:06

God. I can't

1:40:08

do four seasons of something right now. I got

1:40:10

so many movie scripts. I can't do this. I

1:40:12

can't do Fantastic Four. I can't do Mandalorian Grogu.

1:40:14

I can't do every single nerd thing under the

1:40:16

sun. I don't want to be a dick, but

1:40:18

I am kind of a big deal. in

1:40:21

every single big franchise that exists. I'm

1:40:25

Batman now. Nobody's told you yet. That

1:40:28

just happened this week. And

1:40:30

Robin, it's weird. I'm going to try it.

1:40:33

Yeah. So I was like, holy shit, they did

1:40:35

it. They did the thing. So let's see

1:40:37

where this goes. But I'm excited. I

1:40:39

think I'm going to start replaying the

1:40:41

last of us, too. I was telling Steve

1:40:44

off air, but that's one thing the

1:40:46

show is doing is making me really want

1:40:48

to play the game again. So

1:40:51

see how that goes. It's good stuff.

1:40:53

a great game. But thank you

1:40:55

guys for listening. I know there's a lot

1:40:57

of fucking bullshit podcasts and we're one of

1:40:59

them. Thank you for

1:41:01

hanging in there. We're still, if you're

1:41:03

not a big streaming things fan, we typically

1:41:05

record in our studio together, but

1:41:07

HBO fucked us and we don't have screeners and so this

1:41:09

is what we have to do. So

1:41:11

I'm sorry if this is kind of the

1:41:13

vibes off or, you know. It gets a lot

1:41:15

cooler is all I'm trying to say. Check

1:41:18

out our other stuff. Normally, we're very good. This

1:41:20

doesn't happen often, I swear. Yeah,

1:41:22

we would never say something like skull fucking

1:41:24

normally. You

1:41:26

can take our word for that if you don't

1:41:28

listen to anything else. Email

1:41:31

the show at dreamingthingspot at gmail .com.

1:41:34

Let us know how you're feeling, how

1:41:36

you're coping. We'll be your gale. You

1:41:38

can have a little therapy session and process

1:41:40

things with us. Just give us the good

1:41:42

shit. Our next episode will

1:41:45

be out Monday after episode three. Is

1:41:47

next episode wedding time or not? Is

1:41:49

there one more? So

1:41:52

I will be out for the

1:41:54

next two episodes. And I

1:41:56

will be out on episode four. That's right.

1:41:59

Andy's wedding. Gotcha, gotcha. I just wanted to warn

1:42:01

the audience on that as well. Our

1:42:03

final episode for Midnight Mass should be

1:42:05

dropping soon. Over on patreon .com slash

1:42:07

streaming things. Game of Thrones is still

1:42:09

rocking for season five. Thank you

1:42:11

guys for listening. We love you dearly. That's all the

1:42:13

time we have for right now. We've got to

1:42:15

go return some video tapes. My name is

1:42:17

1:42:19
