In this episode, we take a look at a technology of the future that could transform the world's electricity production by 2050: fusion power. Fusion power comes from the fusion of two atomic nuclei. The reaction produces a quantity of energy 4 times greater than that of nuclear fission. The process has been studied in physics laboratories in almost all industrialised countries since the 1950s. The ultimate goal of this research is to master the production of unlimited, safe, and commercially competitive renewable energy as part of a zero-carbon energy mix. And a lot of progress has been made to reach this objective. Indeed, recent developments in this field of fusion are bringing us closer to practical implementation. According to the Fusion Industry Association, by 2021, more than 30 private companies were working on fusion worldwide. Assystem is one of them. Fusion has the potential to meet the world's growing demand for low-carbon energy. It would thus be a game changer in the fight against climate change.
