2:01
right, you guys, I'm so very,
2:03
very excited and blessed to have
2:05
Mia Daniela here on the show
2:07
because today we're talking about something
2:10
that every single person that comes
2:12
to The Systemizer Life podcast and
2:14
The Systemizer Life YouTube channel. This
2:16
is what they binge. This is what they're
2:18
searching for. This is the most downloaded and
2:21
the most viewed is how do we get
2:23
our act together in our home? So Mia,
2:25
thank you so much for being here. And
2:27
I ask every guest that's on the show
2:30
to obviously introduce your yourself, but also let
2:32
us know what you are juggling on a
2:34
regular basis, which I know is a lot
2:36
these days. Thank
2:38
you so much for having me over here, Chelsea.
2:42
Let's see. Well, my background is
2:44
in holistic clutter -free living, so
2:46
I help people to find ways
2:49
to let go of the clutter in a
2:51
way that doesn't feel scarce or bare, you
2:53
know, and create a space. Really, my big
2:56
thing is creating a space that supports you.
2:58
That's what got me into this whole thing,
3:00
and that's kind of what drives me forward
3:02
is... creating spaces that are supportive to our
3:04
lives. And yeah, I've been juggling a
3:06
lot here lately. As you
3:08
know, because you're one of the speakers
3:11
in my summit, I've been in the
3:13
midst of planning a big live event,
3:15
the Modern Mom Simple Home Reimagine Summit.
3:17
And so it's been a lot of...
3:19
a lot of social interactions, a little
3:22
more than usual for the introvert that
3:24
I am. And managing that
3:26
with the YouTube channel, it's a
3:28
lot of spinning plates going on,
3:30
but I feel so lucky to
3:32
be able to make all the
3:35
connections that I've been making. Yeah.
3:38
Well, we're going to
3:41
dive into kind of your
3:43
concept of why it's important
3:45
to have a clutter -free
3:47
space. Obviously
3:49
I love this topic so much
3:51
and when I first got started
3:53
with creating a home management system
3:55
I did not want to talk
3:57
about this at all because for
3:59
so many years I was like
4:01
I'm not a professional organizer I
4:03
don't feel qualified to talk about
4:05
this and then I realized that
4:08
There's so much more to decluttering
4:10
than just being an organized person
4:12
and that's not really even what
4:14
it's about, honestly. So I'm really
4:16
excited to have this conversation. But
4:20
also, we're going to talk about a completely
4:22
free and incredible online event that I have
4:24
been blessed to be involved in. And Mia,
4:27
thank you so much for asking me to
4:29
be a part of your summit. So I'll
4:31
have you talk a little bit about that
4:33
at the end. You guys are going to
4:36
have to stick around so you can get
4:38
all of those details. But talk to me
4:40
a little bit about what it means to
4:42
you to create. and why you feel like
4:45
it's so important, but even just what it
4:47
means to you to be able to have
4:49
an environment that helps you succeed. What does
4:52
that actually look like for a mom who
4:54
is working really hard to try and juggle
4:56
her home and her business or however she's
4:58
making money? And she
5:01
feels like the stuff, the house,
5:03
the chores, the upkeep are the
5:05
thing that's getting in her way.
5:09
Wow. I mean, Really, it's
5:12
going to be different from person to
5:14
person. What is it that you're trying
5:16
to achieve? Like everybody, all
5:18
the moms here, whether they're building their
5:20
own business or trying to tap into
5:22
their more creative side and create management
5:24
systems around that, everybody's going to have
5:26
their own thing that they're really trying
5:28
to achieve. But at the heart of
5:30
it, what can you do to
5:32
make the actions and habits that you're wanting
5:35
to take easier and the things that are
5:37
getting in the way of that harder? I
5:39
think that that's really at the core of
5:41
like, when you want to optimize your environment
5:43
to help support your goals and support the
5:45
things you're trying to achieve or support just
5:47
your general lifestyle as a mom. You know,
5:50
I have a two and a half year
5:52
old toddler and I run my own business.
5:54
So we have just like, just stuff happening
5:56
all the time, you know, I'll be in
5:58
the middle of recording something. And then all
6:00
of a sudden, you know, I have to
6:02
go pick up something that spilled. And so,
6:05
I mean, I get having all of the
6:07
different plates that are spinning at the same
6:09
time and and have a space that makes
6:11
the actions that you're wanting to take easier.
6:15
It's just like taking a breath of fresh air. You
6:17
know, you don't want to add any more friction than
6:19
you already have to your day -to -day life inside
6:21
of your space. And so really, I think that if
6:23
you're wanting to support your goals, making
6:25
the things that you're trying to achieve easier
6:27
is a big thing, making the spaces that
6:29
you're wanting to achieve them in clearer, not
6:32
full of clutter, and making the
6:34
things that are getting in the way of
6:36
that, whether that is like, you know, scrolling
6:38
through your phone or, you know, having to
6:40
dig through bins to get to the workbooks
6:42
that you need to use, all of that
6:44
stuff, remove a lot of that friction. Yeah,
6:47
I think about this a lot. I've
6:51
mentioned it here on the podcast
6:53
so many times, but I am
6:56
a huge advocate of the Montessori
6:58
method. And the reason why
7:00
I really ever even got into that
7:02
with educating my kids was far before
7:05
they were old enough to even go
7:08
into school and I learned that
7:10
Montessori is very big on bringing
7:12
the environment to the child and
7:14
making sure that the environment that
7:16
you've set up for your child
7:18
allows them to succeed. As
7:22
I was reading through like the prep for
7:25
this interview and kind of looking over your
7:27
philosophy and what you teach I was like
7:29
this is so Fascinating because why would we
7:31
never think to do that for our own
7:33
environment? First of all, nobody thinks to do
7:36
that for their children's environment at all let
7:38
alone for their own environment But if we
7:40
could just like for a minute switch everybody's
7:42
brains over into this concept of Why
7:45
not set up our environment to help
7:47
us succeed? And so I'm going
7:50
to throw a couple examples out there of like
7:52
what I've done in my home to set up
7:54
my environment to help me to succeed. And then
7:56
I want you to just kind of talk about
7:58
maybe what you've done or how you've helped other
8:00
students and clients that you've worked with to be
8:03
able to do that. But, you know, specifically with
8:05
our kids, obviously I've made sure that
8:07
in order for them to get through their morning
8:09
routine. Perfect example was
8:11
this morning Bailey's like will you help me brush my teeth
8:13
because she wasn't feeling motivated She knows how to do it
8:15
on her own and I was like sure Well,
8:18
I go in there and guess why she's
8:20
always distracted. I pulled out her drawer where
8:22
her brushing her teeth stuff are. There's a
8:24
necklace in there. There's 45 chapsticks in there.
8:26
There's a baby doll toothbrush in there. There's
8:28
hair ties in there. And now all of
8:30
a sudden, it's very hard to stay focused
8:32
on just brushing our teeth. And I was
8:34
like, oh, baby girl, it's not clean. It's
8:37
messy. The towel in the bottom hasn't been
8:39
changed in a while. And it's like just
8:41
that little nuance of like. I
8:44
know that I can help her succeed so much better
8:46
just by changing that one thing in her environment and
8:48
even potentially looking at do we need to put it
8:50
on the counter versus in a drawer under the counter.
8:52
These little things like that, right? And
8:55
same thing, one of the, another example
8:57
for me in my own life. Obviously,
9:00
I have these types of things where
9:02
I've created an incredible environment for success
9:04
within my computer. And those are the
9:07
systems I use for my business. But
9:09
for my own health journey, like
9:11
my smoothie basket, that is so dialed in
9:13
and so organized. It sits on one spot
9:16
on the shelf. I pull it down. Everything's
9:18
in it. I put it back. And I
9:20
can just blow through that every day and
9:22
really count on that. So give us some
9:24
examples and talk through how women can make
9:27
this happen in their life. Oh
9:29
man, yeah, I know. I use it in
9:31
so many different places too. For me, my
9:34
entire living room is kind of geared to
9:36
having a big open space for yoga because
9:38
I'm really big into yoga. I need to
9:41
have that space to be able to just
9:43
stop and stretch. And it works great for
9:45
it because I have a dog and Chloe
9:48
and my daughter just being able to have
9:50
that open space. So we've foregone having an
9:52
official coffee table. We just have a little
9:54
mobile round table because it makes it easier
9:57
to be able to you know,
9:59
do those things that I want to do. If
10:01
I want to just drop down and do some
10:03
stretching because they're working so hard and my back
10:05
starting, you know, like, I don't want to have
10:07
to. OK, well, now I got to go. clear
10:09
clean things up and move the table, you know,
10:11
all this different stuff. So that's something that that
10:13
I've really and I've talked so many times about
10:15
how like, yeah, I don't think I'm ever going
10:17
to get a coffee table because that space means
10:19
so much to me just to be able to
10:21
do that. I'm with you on
10:23
the smoothie stuff. I love making smoothies
10:26
and we also have like a little
10:28
smoothie bin to make it super easy
10:30
to pull out. And so, yeah, I
10:32
think that probably I would say exercise
10:34
and food for some reason has been
10:37
the biggest ways and I'm sure that's
10:39
not new with it being close to
10:41
the new years. Everybody's into like, you
10:43
know, wellness and fitness. Yeah,
10:46
so having, I have my gym shoes
10:48
and everything like right by the front
10:50
door whenever I want to go out.
10:53
I've got all of my protein shakes
10:55
and protein smoothies are kind of lined
10:57
up in the fridge and basically
11:00
all of the things that I don't want to be
11:02
eating or not even for me, but for my husband,
11:04
he's got high triglycerides. So things that I don't want
11:07
him to be eating, try to kind of like shove
11:09
those to the back and hide them at a little
11:11
more friction to be able to get into those things.
11:14
And then for, you know, I love reading
11:16
and it could be so easy to just
11:19
not shut down the day for those of
11:21
you who work from home. I'm sure Chelsea
11:23
talks a lot about like maintaining boundaries
11:25
with your work life. And
11:28
so make sure that I have a book that
11:30
I want to read that's like right next to
11:32
the bedside table where I'm enticed to pull it
11:34
over and keeping my bedroom segregated to where, okay,
11:36
this spot is for work. When I'm done with
11:38
work, I'm going to sit at the bed and
11:40
I'm not going to have all of these work
11:43
things right next to the bed. I'm going to
11:45
have books and things in my bottle of water,
11:47
you know? Yeah,
11:49
I think it's such a
11:51
hard concept for people that
11:53
have never use their home
11:55
as a tool for success
11:57
in their life and they've
11:59
never really even seen it
12:01
like that. My mind is
12:03
just like, you've opened up
12:05
Pandora's box with this concept
12:08
because what an incredible opportunity.
12:10
I think a lot of
12:12
people probably got plugged
12:14
into how versatile and how much of
12:16
a tool their home is whenever the
12:18
pandemic hit and they start doing everything
12:20
out of their home and figure out
12:22
how to make it function and be
12:24
multi -purpose. But even if it's not
12:27
multi -purpose and you have strong boundaries
12:29
built in, I
12:31
think it's still important, especially for moms that
12:33
are homeschooling, right? We've got to look at
12:35
where is how do we keep these spaces
12:38
organized so the function of it functions really
12:40
well for us but I want to point
12:42
out the word friction that you just mentioned
12:44
and I know you talk about this often
12:46
and I don't know if you've ever read
12:49
atomic habits and there's a couple other people
12:51
that talk about this about when you're trying
12:53
to create a habit you want to make
12:55
sure that it's readily available to you so
12:58
you kind of just alluded to this but
13:00
talk a little bit about what it means
13:02
when you're establishing organization
13:04
and becoming more minimal in your
13:06
home, how does friction between you
13:09
and an object come into play?
13:13
Well, friction, you know, is by definition,
13:15
it's going to make things more difficult.
13:17
It's going to add barriers, it's going
13:19
to add extra time, extra energy, extra
13:21
exertion that it takes for you to
13:24
get to whatever you're trying to get
13:26
to and by extension then to achieve
13:28
whatever that goal is that you're trying
13:30
to achieve. So if you're trying to
13:32
journal more, for example, and all of
13:34
your journals are buried beneath a ton
13:36
of other books at the bottom of
13:38
your closet and your pins are scattered
13:40
throughout the house, you know, you're not
13:42
likely to take that action of journaling
13:44
more because it's going to be too
13:46
much friction to go through and gather
13:48
all the supplies that you need. Whereas
13:50
if you're really into the The idea,
13:52
this course journaling is just an example,
13:54
but the idea of journaling and you
13:56
want to really dig into visualizing your
13:58
goals for the next year and you
14:00
want to be sure that that's something,
14:02
a habit that you're taking every single
14:04
day, if you have it. presentational
14:07
on top of your desk with the pins
14:09
and highlighters right next to it, you're much
14:11
more likely to be visually cued to go
14:13
to that journal and do it. And you're
14:15
likely to actually follow through with it because
14:17
you don't have all of the friction. And
14:20
so, you know, we have just a
14:22
million different examples of that throughout our
14:24
home constantly. I mean, we constantly have
14:27
things that we're trying to achieve, routines
14:29
that we're taking every single day, you
14:31
know, and we don't often give a
14:34
lot of intentional thought to Well,
14:36
how easy is it for me to
14:38
go through all of the little micro
14:40
steps that are involved in actually taking
14:43
that action? Yeah, I
14:45
really want you to talk even
14:48
like deeper and maybe like, let's
14:50
just stick with a specific goal
14:52
that somebody might have, right? So
14:55
we've mentioned journaling and reading and
14:57
yoga. But I know
14:59
for my listeners, they pop on here
15:01
a lot to learn about time management.
15:03
We talk about time blocking and routine
15:06
stacks. So how would
15:08
you encourage a woman that's trying to create
15:10
a nighttime routine for herself? Because most women
15:12
don't. They work themselves rugged. They're doing dishes
15:15
until they're bloody tired, and then they're scrolling
15:17
on their screens in bed until they fall
15:19
asleep. And they don't want to be doing
15:21
this, but this is just what we do,
15:24
right? So I love
15:26
this concept that you had kind of
15:28
mentioned about not having so much friction,
15:30
but how do you create a A
15:32
space that supports the goal of them
15:35
wanting to create this new routine like
15:37
Talk her through what she could do
15:39
in that environment with with actual objects,
15:41
right? Like I know it's probably and
15:43
it is hard for me It's probably
15:46
hard for you to imagine what these
15:48
people's homes actually look like but I
15:50
get the privilege of seeing inside of
15:52
my students and my clients homes from
15:55
videos that they post and even being
15:57
around other friends and I really get
15:59
to see oh so this is what
16:01
it looks like before the transformation to
16:03
kind of help walk them through that
16:06
because I'm on the other side of
16:08
the transformation being a previous total like
16:11
order of sorts, you know,
16:13
like emotionally and sentimentally attached
16:16
to everything. And so
16:18
let's just have you talk about for
16:20
a minute what she could do in
16:22
her environment to support setting up a
16:25
nighttime routine. So.
16:28
Now, for me, I'm trying to think
16:30
along the lines of my own personal
16:32
nighttime routine. It involves
16:34
mostly the spaces for me of
16:37
the kitchen, the bathroom, and the
16:39
bedroom. So I think that
16:41
getting intentional, first of all, about what
16:43
do you want your nighttime routine to
16:45
be? Because that could be different spaces.
16:47
Your nighttime routine could look very different
16:49
and include different spaces than mine. Once
16:52
you're clear on what those spaces are, first
16:55
of all, we got to get the clutter out. you
16:57
know, you don't want to be going into a space
16:59
because one of the biggest hindrances
17:02
and blocks to our goals is having
17:04
a bunch of visual clutter to where
17:06
you can't even focus. Your brain can't
17:08
focus and stay centered on what it's
17:10
trying to do when, like
17:12
you said with your daughter, there's just so many
17:14
little distractions in the drawer when she goes in
17:16
to do this thing. And if you have all
17:18
of those distractions in all of the different areas
17:21
that you're going as you try to do your
17:23
nighttime routine, you're going to find it very challenging
17:25
to actually follow through with it. So
17:27
removing the clutter is going to be
17:29
a huge thing. And I know that
17:31
that is really a journey and a
17:33
challenge on its own depending on how
17:36
much clutter you have but even if
17:38
you're able to just clear out those
17:40
spaces to be intentional enough to say
17:42
okay well my evening routine needs to
17:44
include. this time in the bathroom
17:46
where I just get to unwind. I don't have any
17:48
kids pulling on me. Maybe I can take a shower
17:50
a bath, you know, do a little bit of skincare,
17:53
look at myself in the mirror and take some deep
17:55
breaths. You know, that
17:57
that can be one of your spaces that you
18:00
just you clear out some clutter to where you're
18:02
going to be able to focus and get a
18:04
little more centered with yourself when you're in that
18:06
space. I personally think for
18:08
me, especially the bedside table in the
18:10
bedroom, like if your bedroom is piled
18:12
with with stuff and it's going to
18:14
take you, you know, a week or
18:16
so to really go through all of
18:18
the different nooks and crannies of your
18:20
bedroom, do some triage.
18:22
Start with like the bedside table. That's
18:24
probably where a lot of people are
18:26
going to be at least winding down
18:28
before they go to sleep. Make sure
18:30
that your bedside table is clear and
18:32
it has the things that you want
18:34
to be participating in in this. you
18:37
know bedtime routine and it doesn't have
18:39
the things that you don't want to
18:41
be participating in and maybe that means
18:43
like charging your phone in the other
18:45
room for a little bit at least
18:47
to build the habit um you know
18:49
100 % and I even think like
18:51
do you have space for your water
18:53
bottle do you have space for your
18:55
hand cream like when I made these
18:57
simple changes like Put the
18:59
chapstick on your nightstand and put the
19:01
water on your nightstand. Like, do you
19:04
have room for this? And I remember
19:06
when we brought in their, their, essentially
19:08
their small dressers is we have a
19:11
very large master wall, like that's there
19:13
in, in our bedroom. And I was
19:15
like, I need to fill this space
19:18
with something. And I want the bed
19:20
centered in it. And so I got
19:22
these really big nightstands that are essentially
19:25
like very small dressers. I
19:27
mean, they're dressers, but they're small enough, but
19:29
they're very oversized nightstands. My husband was like,
19:31
why did you just put dressers in here?
19:33
And I was like, look at all the
19:35
room for all of the nighttime routine activities
19:37
we have now. It's like one drawers for
19:39
the journals and the books and the, and
19:41
it just changed everything. And now I'm like,
19:43
I'm obsessed with this. And the other thing
19:45
too that was such a game changer for
19:47
me is just a little glass jar with
19:49
a lid that pops off and on with
19:51
my um like essential oils
19:53
whatever i want to put in my bath
19:55
right and now we just have a shower
19:57
so i have shower steamers in there and
20:00
this was something that like didn't seem like
20:02
a big deal but it literally made it
20:04
to where i was doing this and i'm
20:06
succeeding at it now it is the tiniest
20:08
thing but those things are what make up
20:11
our days that's those days make up our
20:13
weeks and those weeks make up our life
20:15
you know so i think that one thing
20:17
that Sorry. No,
20:19
one thing that I did in the bathroom
20:22
talking about having your bath products and everything
20:24
easily available is kind of the opposite of
20:26
that because my two and a half year
20:28
old also bathes in there. So I don't
20:30
want to have to go and dig out
20:32
all of her toys and her little bathtub
20:34
stickers and everything. So we have got a
20:36
little basket. to where every time she's done
20:38
with her bath, all of her stuff gets
20:40
scooped up, put in the basket, and put
20:42
back on the shelf. So it doesn't look
20:44
like she owns that bath space. I know.
20:46
Well, and funny enough, we only have a
20:48
stand -up shower in our master bath. So
20:51
I have to go into the kids' bathroom
20:53
to bathe in this new house that we
20:55
got. And that was such a
20:57
huge transition. But even whenever we had a
20:59
huge stand -alone soaking tub in the other
21:01
house, it was always for the kids. Of
21:03
course, they want to take a bath in
21:05
the bathtub that's basically swimming pool for them,
21:07
you know? And that was such a huge
21:10
thing where I was like, okay, look, so
21:12
I made that their kids, the kids bath
21:14
feel a lot more like my own space.
21:16
So whenever I get in there, I can
21:18
easily set their things up on a shelf
21:20
and now I'm not staring at their crayons
21:22
that they get to color on the wall
21:24
with, you know, sometimes I'm like, oh gosh,
21:27
we're going to erase this because this is
21:29
not my idea of winding down. the end
21:31
of the day. Sometimes it is, but sometimes
21:33
you know I just want a place of
21:35
solitude. So I love that you worked through
21:37
that example because I've had success in that
21:39
too. So let's shift gears for a quick
21:41
minute and make sure that we have a
21:44
juicy section of this to talk about your
21:46
event that's coming up because I'm really excited.
21:48
So tell us. All
21:50
the things, first of all, you
21:52
guys can go to chelseajo .co
21:54
backslash home summit in order to
21:56
register. And we are going
21:58
to share all details right now and I'll
22:00
share the link here again in a little
22:02
bit. So share with us the idea, the
22:04
concept, what people are going to learn and
22:07
why they absolutely should be there. Yes.
22:10
So it's called the Modern Moms Simple Home
22:12
Reimagined Summit. And it's a really long name,
22:14
but that's because I was just so intentional
22:16
about what the purpose of the summit was
22:19
going to be and who it was going
22:21
to be for. And
22:23
this is, you know, for myself, I've
22:25
never really felt like I fit in
22:27
with what you see a lot of
22:29
mom life portrayed as or what it's
22:31
supposed to be like online. And,
22:34
you know, like, I feel like I'm a mom
22:36
of the modern world. I run my own business
22:38
from home. I don't wear
22:40
a lot of fluffy dresses
22:43
and baked bread. I don't
22:45
relate to a lot of
22:47
the things that you see
22:49
out there. And I had
22:51
trouble finding spaces that really
22:54
focused on people who are
22:56
moms. in this generation simplifying
22:58
and just creating that space and optimizing
23:00
that space. And so that's that was
23:02
a part of what kind of got
23:04
me started on this. And then it
23:06
just really I started digging in and
23:08
thinking about, well, what do I really
23:10
want people to walk away with specifically?
23:12
And so that's how we kind of
23:14
got to our categories of reimagining function,
23:16
which is where Chelsea is going to
23:19
be speaking. She talks about obviously time
23:21
management and systems. And so they want
23:23
to reimagining function is all about digging
23:25
into how is your space How
23:27
can you make your space really operate in a
23:29
way that's going to support you? And
23:32
how could you reimagine that to
23:34
be this beautiful, seamless, flowing thing?
23:37
Day two is about reimagining space. So we're going
23:39
to get into a little more of the nitty
23:41
gritty for like decluttering, organizing. How
23:43
can you physically align your space to
23:45
be what it needs to be for
23:47
your specific life? And then day three
23:49
is about reimagining possibility. And
23:52
this is where I kind of nerd out
23:54
because I love the concept that your space
23:56
can help you to become the person that
23:58
you want to become. I love that your
24:00
space can be tailored, kind of like Chelsea
24:02
and I talked about today, to help you
24:04
to achieve your goals and these dreams and
24:06
these bigger visions that you have for your
24:08
life. So that's really what day three is
24:10
all about, reimagining possibility. And
24:12
so, yeah, we're gonna have a lot of
24:15
fun. There's gonna be like lavender mocktail classes
24:17
over in the Facebook group and we've got
24:19
bingo. bunch
24:21
of things planned, but that's the heart of it. Yeah,
24:24
there's a lot of great speakers
24:26
and great content. Obviously,
24:28
I'm going to be talking about a
24:31
home management system, which includes all the
24:33
things. So you guys can definitely go
24:35
there and learn that from me for
24:38
sure, but chelseajo .co. home
24:40
summit we were like how do we
24:43
shrink the name of this summit down
24:45
what should we put so chelseajo .co
24:47
backslash home summit was the easiest link
24:49
for us to throw out there you
24:51
can grab that in the show notes
24:53
and it's completely free right and they're
24:56
going to get three days of speakers
24:58
and just really great juicy information That's
25:01
a great community for you guys to
25:03
go meet some other people and see
25:05
what really sticks. And I think that's
25:07
so fun when it comes to summits.
25:10
I love being in summits because there's
25:12
so much information. And some
25:14
people get overwhelmed by that but I actually really
25:16
love it because you just get to pick and
25:18
choose little bits and pieces of it and then
25:21
something will really land for you and you get
25:23
to meet all of these amazing people that you
25:25
would not really ever be connected with otherwise. So
25:27
thank you for bringing all of us together and
25:29
creating this summit for my audience. I'm excited to
25:31
be able to share it with them and excited
25:33
to be able to pour into your audience and
25:35
everyone else that's going to be involved. So Mia
25:38
let people know where they can obviously get connected
25:40

25:42
sure that all of that information is down below.
25:45
