Yumano,

0:16

Papacango.

0:28

Here's the deal. A couple

0:30

of months ago, my buddy

0:33

Riley Morton was down here

0:36

in Crestone. And he

0:38

had this idea for a

0:40

project that he wants to do,

0:42

which is basically talking

0:45

to. authors to

0:47

get the backstory of

0:49

books. And he's uniquely

0:51

well suited to do

0:53

this because he's a

0:55

documentary filmmaker and he's

0:58

a very smart guy

1:00

and very thorough, very

1:02

prepared, takes things very

1:04

seriously. And so he came

1:06

to me and he was like,

1:09

look, let's do a dry run

1:11

on this with Sex of Dawn.

1:13

I'd like to talk with you

1:15

about what your life was

1:17

like before you wrote that book?

1:19

Like what led up to this? How

1:21

did this book come to be? And,

1:23

you know, I don't know. I'm

1:26

probably not a good authority

1:28

about myself, but I feel

1:30

like if I had to

1:33

describe myself, I would say

1:35

I'm simultaneously someone who is

1:37

very comfortable talking about themselves.

1:40

Obviously, I make a living

1:42

at it. But also... Kind

1:45

of reticent to talk about

1:47

some things Particularly

1:49

personal things that involve

1:52

other people If like everyone

1:54

I've ever known Was dead,

1:56

I would tell you some

1:58

fucking stories. Holy shit But I

2:00

don't because I'm trying to be

2:02

respectful of other

2:05

people's privacy and you

2:07

know they're not podcasters.

2:09

They're not people who

2:11

want their private shit

2:13

in the public realm. So

2:15

it's always a complicated thing.

2:17

Some people like my friend

2:19

Neil Strauss, he and I

2:21

have talked about this a

2:23

lot and if you've read...

2:25

His books, particularly the

2:28

truth, man, he

2:30

reveals some things

2:32

about his parents' marriage,

2:35

about their sexual life,

2:37

that I personally would

2:39

never have written. Even

2:41

if they were dead, I

2:44

wouldn't have written it. And

2:46

we talked about that, and

2:48

his thing is... Your life is

2:50

your life and anyone who comes into

2:53

your life and becomes part of your

2:55

life, like they just have to accept

2:57

that you're a writer, so you're going

2:59

to write about them and their fair

3:01

game and whatever experience you had with

3:04

them, you have the right to describe

3:06

it. And you know, of course, he,

3:08

when possible, would advocate trying

3:10

to protect people's privacy with, you

3:12

know, changing names and dates and

3:15

all that kind of shit. You

3:17

know, when you're talking about your

3:19

mother and your father and your

3:21

ex-wife and, you know, your girlfriend

3:24

in high school and whatever, it's

3:26

pretty easy to track those people

3:28

down and figure out who they

3:31

are. So there's no way to

3:33

really protect their anonymity. So anyway,

3:35

this is all a long way

3:38

around of saying that these conversations

3:40

with Riley were very personal

3:42

and, you know, I did try to... have

3:44

some discretion around other

3:47

people's privacy, but the

3:49

whole idea was to

3:51

be as revealing

3:53

as possible. And we

3:56

were sitting in the woods

3:58

out here by the house.

4:00

because I had COVID, I had

4:02

just come back from Spain, I

4:04

think this must have been in

4:06

September, October. I had just

4:08

been to my friend Brian's funeral

4:10

and got COVID on the

4:12

way back and Riley was

4:14

already here when I tested

4:16

positive and then he was

4:18

gonna go see his parents

4:20

after our visit. So he

4:22

was understandably concerned about being

4:24

inside and so he was

4:26

staying in his van out

4:29

in the. in the driveway or

4:31

maybe it was our van. I forget

4:33

his van he was in, but he

4:35

was, you know, like very, our

4:37

contact was all outside. So we

4:40

did these interviews in the trees,

4:42

so you might hear some birds

4:44

or some shuffling around or

4:46

whatever. And we did it

4:48

over the course of two days,

4:50

and I think it was probably

4:53

like three hours each day, so there's

4:55

a lot of material. And

4:57

I haven't listened to these.

5:01

Yeah, I don't know. Maybe that's

5:03

part of the complexity.

5:06

Like I like talking, but

5:08

I don't necessarily like listening

5:10

to myself talk, you know,

5:13

even just doing these things.

5:15

I get tired of listening

5:18

to myself and have

5:20

to sign off after a while.

5:22

But the these conversations

5:24

got a lot more

5:26

detailed and a lot

5:28

more personal than other

5:30

conversations I've had on

5:32

other podcasts or stories

5:34

I've told in romas

5:36

and tomas and stuff.

5:38

So yeah, so I

5:40

guess I'm simultaneously warning

5:43

you and apologizing to

5:45

you if it seems

5:47

self-centered or whatever, if

5:49

you've heard enough of

5:51

my stuff like these are

5:53

good ones to skip I

5:55

guess. But I guess they're

5:57

pretty good because... I'm working

6:00

with production company that's sort

6:02

of exploring the idea of doing

6:04

some sort of a feature film

6:06

or a documentary series or something

6:08

about Sex At Dawn and the

6:11

sort of journey that led up

6:13

to it and with Riley's permission

6:15

I shared these recordings with them

6:17

and they said that they really

6:20

enjoyed them and it was super

6:22

helpful and I said because you

6:24

know as one of the tricks

6:26

of the trade is Riley said

6:29

to me just like let it

6:31

roll man just say whatever you

6:33

want and we can always edit

6:36

it out later you know if

6:38

there's something you're not comfortable with

6:40

but of course that's predicated on

6:42

the idea that I'm gonna sit

6:45

there and listen to six hours

6:47

of myself talking and you know

6:49

delete the stuff that I feel

6:51

is too personal and honestly I'm

6:54

not gonna do that I just

6:56

I there are so many other

6:58

things I'd rather do with six

7:00

hours than listen to myself you

7:03

know, tell stories, obviously, I've heard

7:05

before. So I haven't done that.

7:07

So these Riley edited them down,

7:09

but I think just for, you

7:12

know, clarity or to get long

7:14

gaps out and whatever. But I

7:16

haven't listened to them. I don't

7:18

really remember what we talked about.

7:21

As I said, I had COVID.

7:23

I was kind of under the

7:25

weather. And I'm talking to a

7:27

good friend. So, you know. I'm

7:30

not really filtering much. That's the

7:32

backstory on these. Now, another, I

7:34

guess another aspect of this is

7:37

that maybe this, I hadn't really

7:39

thought about that, but knowing that

7:41

I had these and, you know,

7:43

and Riley said, you should use

7:46

them, you should make them bonus

7:48

material, you know, for your, supporting

7:50

audience members and all that. And

7:53

I thought, yeah, but I don't

7:55

really want this stuff going out

7:57

to the... general public. There are

7:59

things I'm comfortable sharing with people

8:01

who come to this podcast or

8:03

have been in, you know, listening

8:05

to this podcast for a long

8:08

time. I get emails from you

8:10

all the time. I get emails

8:12

five, six emails a day from

8:14

people saying, I've been listening to

8:16

you since I heard you on

8:18

Rogan, you know, and a lot

8:20

of the reason I'm getting these

8:22

emails now is because I've set

8:24

up this, you know, not paywall,

8:26

paywall. And so people write to

8:29

me and say, hey man, you

8:31

know, let me in. I don't

8:33

have the five bucks a month.

8:35

I'll pay you when I get

8:37

a job or, you know, I

8:39

got four kids and, you know,

8:41

whatever. I'm in grad school. I

8:43

live in Brazil. Where is someone

8:45

just wrote to me recently from

8:47

somewhere really interesting? I forget where

8:50

it was, but it was a

8:52

place like, I can't believe there's

8:54

someone there listening to this podcast.

8:56

Anyway, whatever the fucking reason is,

8:58

you don't even have to have

9:00

a reason, just tell me, hey,

9:02

let me in, please, and I'll

9:04

let you in, because the point

9:06

is, you want to be there,

9:08

and I want everyone who's here

9:10

to want to be here. And

9:13

why? Because it makes me comfortable

9:15

sharing things like this. Because I

9:17

feel like we're friends, you know

9:19

me. I don't know you, but

9:21

if you've been around this long,

9:23

I may as well know you.

9:25

I know what kind of person

9:27

you are. I know you, you

9:29

know, you know, you know, you

9:31

know, you know, you know, you

9:34

know who I am and if

9:36

I say something that's kind of

9:38

weird or makes you uncomfortable or

9:40

whatever, you're not holding it against

9:42

me because if you were the

9:44

kind of person who was judgmental

9:46

in that way, you would have

9:48

bailed a long time ago. or

9:50

you wouldn't have bothered to send

9:52

me an email saying, hey, let

9:54

me in, or you wouldn't bother

9:57

to pay five bucks a month

9:59

or fifty bucks a year, you

10:01

just wouldn't be here. So the

10:03

fact... that you're here, the fact

10:05

that you're listening to my voice

10:07

tells me that I can be

10:09

pretty transparent with you. So that's

10:11

the backstory. Now, those of you

10:13

who are listening to my voice

10:15

who are not beyond the paywall

10:18

because I'm just going to use

10:20

this intro for both groups. I'm

10:22

not going to do a, you

10:24

know, two different versions. That's what

10:26

this episode is. This is the

10:28

first of there will be four

10:30

and I'm not going to do

10:32

them all in a row I'll

10:34

just sort of pepper them in

10:36

over the next few months But

10:38

yeah, there's material for for pretty

10:41

long episodes They're going to be

10:43

available only to people who are

10:45

inside in the kitchen not out

10:47

in the living room You know,

10:49

there's the people out on the

10:51

porch, there's the people out in

10:53

the yard, there's the people in

10:55

the living room, and then there's

10:57

the hardcore in the kitchen. So

10:59

if you are in the kitchen,

11:02

you're going to hear these episodes

11:04

or at least have access to

11:06

them. And if you aren't in

11:08

the kitchen, but you want to

11:10

be, all you need to do

11:12

is send me an email you

11:14

use to sign up for sub

11:16

stack. and you're welcome to join

11:18

the party in the kitchen.

12:21

you And

14:25

I will be

14:28

back with you with you

14:30

soon with scheduled scheduled

14:33

programming. care.

14:37

Keep the faith.
