And we're live on the on the
0:02
first, first time time in for for
0:04
Welcome full nerd We're not, this everybody
0:06
we're not uh this isn't
0:08
the full episode that want
0:10
to say and is me and
0:13
Brad getting on some some
0:15
quick updates following Gordon's passing, talk a passing
0:17
bit about CES, a little bit about
0:19
CES, but really we're here to give
0:21
some updates and kind of the some
0:23
of the questions that people have had
0:25
and also play a special message we
0:27
have we from Gordon's family, so. So, Oh
0:30
yeah, yeah, cry. Yeah, so yeah, thanks so yeah,
0:32
thanks for for joining me, Brad.
0:34
I know you've got a lot
0:36
of stuff going on stuff going on. I
0:38
for the world. this for the world. Yeah, and
0:40
yeah, like I Like I said, it's just us,
0:42
not a full episode. We're not gonna
0:44
go too much into detail. much in detail. But
0:47
yeah, felt like we wanted
0:49
of provide some updates on... some
0:51
updates on on what happened with Gordon. Obviously if
0:53
I I guess I guess if would
0:55
assume most people have seen
0:57
the news, if you haven't,
0:59
Gordon passed away on December
1:01
Gordon passed It was a... 21st
1:03
It was a Yeah, he he was was
1:06
battling cancer cancer he he loved to
1:08
a while, but he loved
1:10
to continue to chase
1:12
stories I mean we in it.
1:14
And to talk to talk days before
1:16
to the days before
1:18
his passing, I was able
1:20
to have one last
1:22
phone call with him. before then
1:24
so that was then. to me was special
1:26
to me. And he definitely was
1:28
about about how much the folder
1:31
meant to him. there was a It was
1:33
a special thing for him. So
1:35
so yeah yeah yeah it was fun I sitting here.
1:37
Yeah. last few months I've been
1:39
texting Gordon I've been texting
1:41
Gordon regularly. awesome awesome all the text
1:44
text messages are still, still you know, what do you think
1:46
about this new chip? What do you think about this
1:48
announcement? what do you think about this And
1:51
then then uh know, even a
1:53
couple of weeks ago, we
1:55
were relentlessly ago we were relentlessly should
1:57
just good. the Raiders. life is definitely. yeah,
1:59
definitely. And yeah. I want to thank all
2:01
the well wishes for sure everyone's
2:03
been super supportive. Steve did an
2:05
amazing video kind of recounting his
2:07
favorite memories of Gordon and how
2:09
he's going to help uphold his
2:11
legacy on the deeper reporting stuff
2:13
which was awesome. Yeah please. I'm
2:15
guessing a lot of people may
2:17
have already seen Steve's video. But
2:19
if you haven't watched that yet
2:21
and you were touched by Gordon
2:23
in your life, I highly recommend
2:25
going to watch that. Like everything's,
2:27
Steve nailed pretty much my exact
2:29
sentiments as well. And you could
2:32
tell me a lot to him
2:34
and it's well worth the watch,
2:36
especially to get to the end
2:38
full of clips. Yeah, yeah, Ian
2:40
went live, had a nice little
2:42
chat there. I mean, yeah, a
2:44
lot of people showed the support,
2:46
so I really appreciated it, a
2:48
lot of messages, a lot of
2:50
messages. Definitely, definitely thankful for that
2:52
kind of stuff. Yeah, I guess,
2:54
yeah, not much else to get
2:56
into other than the, like he
2:58
very much, he was very appreciative
3:00
of the full nerd in the
3:02
community was definitely a big thing
3:04
and even said the words like,
3:06
you know, he's glad he went
3:08
from just being a writer to
3:10
a YouTube star, which I thought.
3:12
Was funny and I take no
3:14
credit on that. I just knew
3:16
to turn on a camera and
3:18
pointed towards him But like definitely
3:20
it was one of those things
3:22
where he appreciated being able to
3:24
do a lot of video here
3:26
And he did video in the
3:29
past obviously at maximum PC and
3:31
Sophia, but like video was was
3:33
definitely a big part of his
3:35
journey and he appreciated it and
3:37
so I appreciate it too because
3:39
it was able to get Kiera
3:41
Rogordan on camera It also made
3:43
it so I didn't have to
3:45
edit his words because he's a
3:47
tremendous writer but the all the
3:49
assides everything you see on Gordon
3:51
on camera It's the same thing
3:53
in the copy. And I just
3:55
love the people who would see
3:57
it. Yeah, yeah, I love pointing
3:59
a camera at Gordon. And once
4:01
again to, you know, even while
4:03
he was dealing with cancer, he
4:05
was still working on videos, still
4:07
showing up to the podcast. There
4:09
was a lot of talk about
4:11
like, what was the final video
4:13
he did, which was covering the
4:15
9800X3D review. But I will I
4:17
would like to point out like
4:19
the the last the last full
4:21
testing that he did because the
4:23
the review video for the the
4:26
CPU and Help me do the
4:28
testing I still did physically did
4:30
the testing testing so kind of
4:32
the The last videos in my
4:34
mind are the ones that he
4:36
poured everything into were those final
4:38
laptop videos. So it was the
4:40
Qualcomm, then Verizon AI 300, then
4:42
Lunar Lake. He did all that
4:44
testing. He, you know, just, that
4:46
was his last, you know, really
4:48
getting deep into the benchmarks and
4:50
presenting all of his data. And
4:52
I remember also when the announcements
4:54
came out, he did that video
4:56
like framing it. like the fight
4:58
between Drake and Kendrick Lamar like
5:00
he's like what if the what
5:02
if the thumbnail says something along
5:04
the lines of like you know
5:06
Intel and AMD battle that's the
5:08
the most epic thing since Kendrick
5:10
Lamar and Drake or something I
5:12
can't remember the exact yeah I
5:14
was just like I don't know
5:16
if anyone's gonna get that but
5:18
sure you know So, uh, it
5:20
always blows my mind how Gordon,
5:23
like, is very up to date
5:25
with, you know, like, news and
5:27
trends. And pop culture. With pop
5:29
culture, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, he
5:31
was, he was always up on
5:33
that for sure. So that was,
5:35
uh, that was fun. Yeah. So,
5:37
so in my mind, those were
5:39
kind of the last final videos
5:41
that he did, like, just really
5:43
pouring everything into. Obviously did videos
5:45
after that as well, you know,
5:47
that he, he really cared about
5:49
and helped out with testing. and
5:51
all that kind of stuff. But
5:53
yeah, those are good videos. I'm
5:55
kind of glad those were some
5:57
of his last videos because, forget
5:59
which one it was, Lunar Lake
6:01
maybe, the one where he used,
6:03
he connected the two computers, the
6:05
two laptops, and then controlled them
6:07
the exact same. Yeah. And to
6:09
use that to determine real world
6:11
battery life. That's something he has
6:13
thought of and has had Bruin
6:15
for years. Oh, yes. Wasn't the
6:17
difficulty to set up forever? Yeah.
6:20
And that was the ideal situation
6:22
for that test that he's been
6:24
working on the year for years
6:26
to shine. And I think that's
6:28
just a testament to Gordon. Yeah,
6:30
I had actually, at the time,
6:32
I was like, man, I kind
6:34
of think you should do that
6:36
almost as a separate, whole separate
6:38
video, which he, I think he
6:40
did do a follow-up. version of
6:42
that but yeah I was just
6:44
like that's as like the real
6:46
world testing of laptop is literally
6:48
just using two laptops at the
6:50
same time doing the exact same
6:52
thing he loved that idea so
6:54
I'm yeah I'm glad he was
6:56
able to get that in if
6:58
you haven't seen that you should
7:00
definitely go back and watch that
7:02
we're really really classic gored stuff
7:04
I mean testing was at his
7:06
heart we were just talking about
7:08
here we're we're obviously packing for
7:10
CES and getting all the gear
7:12
together and I was talking with
7:14
Alex and I was like, oh,
7:17
be sure to bring card readers.
7:19
And he's like, oh, I have
7:21
a built in card reader on
7:23
my laptop. And I was like,
7:25
well, you know, sometimes they actually
7:27
cheap out and use a lower
7:29
spec. you might actually get faster
7:31
speeds over external car reading. He's
7:33
like, really? And I was like,
7:35
I was like, man, that is,
7:37
that is one of those things
7:39
that Gordon would dive into and
7:41
be like, yeah, let's sit down,
7:43
let's get these laptops. So let's
7:45
do the deep testing that's, that's
7:47
a totally a Gordon thing to
7:49
do for sure. So, we have
7:51
the most exclusively exhaustive USBC table
7:53
roundup on the internet. Yeah, yeah,
7:55
for sure. Anyway, yeah, some other
7:57
technical stuff. I talked about this
7:59
in Discord because there was a
8:01
couple questions. There is a Go
8:03
Fund me. Thank you so much
8:05
for the support. Everybody's been sharing
8:07
it around. Amazing contributions, like, just
8:09
so happy about that. That is
8:11
something I was definitely taking serious
8:14
and really appreciate. And the family
8:16
is just floored by it. So
8:18
I'm glad we got that set
8:20
up there. There was some questions
8:22
like, oh hey, because the organizer
8:24
is a gentleman by the name
8:26
of Chris Bach, which I had
8:28
never met until recently. I've been
8:30
chatting with him. That is actually
8:32
Gordon's cousin. So this is the
8:34
legit go fund me and the
8:36
beneficiary that they added later was
8:38
Dara Tom, which if you don't
8:40
know that's actually Gordon's wife. So
8:42
yes, it is. This is the
8:44
official go fund me. I actually
8:46
need to link to it. right
8:48
now, because I forgot, or if
8:50
you don't mind maybe doing that,
8:52
Willis. So yeah. If you need
8:54
to check a link for whatever
8:56
reason, just go, we have our
8:58
obituary up and we made sure.
9:00
We have various articles up. Yes,
9:02
yeah, I'm sorry. Yeah, I forgot
9:04
to mention that. Yeah, John had
9:06
an amazing obituary on the website,
9:08
including a ton of memories that
9:11
the people around the industry were
9:13
able to provide. So if you
9:15
haven't read that or if you
9:17
haven't read it since the news,
9:19
maybe go back because he's actually
9:21
added a lot of stuff as
9:23
well. Brad, you had a really
9:25
good story about Gordon. There was
9:27
a standalone article. Yes after dark
9:29
baby. And yes I saw some
9:31
people in the chat earlier asking
9:33
about super chat stuff and the
9:35
and if the there's technical stuff
9:37
I need to figure out but
9:39
at this point like thank you
9:41
I appreciate that but if if
9:43
you feel the need to give
9:45
a super chat anytime soon maybe
9:47
please direct it over at the
9:49
the go fund me I would
9:51
appreciate that no pressure of course
9:53
but yeah for for right now
9:55
I'm actually kind of glad we
9:57
don't have super chats enabled because
9:59
I would much rather have that
10:01
money go to his family yeah
10:03
so it's I'm glad it turned
10:05
out so well we have good
10:08
insurance here we actually have really
10:10
good insurance here in this company
10:12
the way we've handled not we
10:14
but they have handled everything like
10:16
makes me really appreciate the company
10:18
but Gordon fought this a lot
10:20
longer than most people do with
10:22
this specific diagnosis. Like it usually
10:24
is a couple of months. He
10:26
held out for over a year
10:28
and a half. Yeah. And those
10:30
in the US health care system,
10:32
those costs add up. So thank
10:34
you to everybody who has, you
10:36
know, Gordon's wife and kids are
10:38
going through enough stress right now.
10:40
This, I'm sure, takes a lot
10:42
of that stress off of their
10:44
shoulders. So thank you for everyone
10:46
who has contributed to that. Yes,
10:48
definitely. This is our experience. Yeah,
10:50
yeah, right. I mean, it's, we're
10:52
figuring out in real time, so
10:54
I appreciate everybody. I did have
10:56
coffee with Gordon's wife, Dara, the
10:58
other day, just kind of going
11:00
over some stuff and we had
11:02
some fun memories to share and
11:05
talk about some future stuff, but
11:07
I did ask her. You know
11:09
did because people have been asking
11:11
me hey did the family know
11:13
Gordon was so beloved in the
11:15
industry like it like literally a
11:17
legend in the industry and and
11:19
so I did ask her that
11:21
and she was like you know
11:23
in in more or less no
11:25
because they got to see Gordon
11:27
at home right they you get
11:29
to see Gordon testing boxes pile
11:31
up hardware everywhere I mean that's
11:33
it happens to all of us
11:35
right and you know. See him
11:37
talk about stuff of course and
11:39
obviously put in his passion and
11:41
love for it He was obviously
11:43
in love with with what he
11:45
did But yeah, like she she
11:47
did not I did I got
11:49
the sense that they did not
11:51
fully understand the breadth of it,
11:53
the support, like how much he
11:55
has affected this industry and affected
11:57
so many people in it, right?
11:59
Like, not only from somebody like
12:02
me who started to learn to
12:04
build PCs from people like Gordon,
12:06
but also like, you know, you
12:08
reading him and being able to
12:10
be able to write a Maxim
12:12
PC. Yeah, yeah, that's what I
12:14
said in Leblurb there. I wish
12:16
I had to do when he
12:18
was alive. But it's always kind
12:20
of weird, you know, working with
12:22
someone and be like, hey man,
12:24
I used to read you and
12:26
boot when I was a teenager.
12:28
That made me want to do
12:30
what I do. And so that's
12:32
my part in the obituary. I
12:34
wish I had said it to
12:36
when he was alive. So you
12:38
have anything like that about anybody
12:40
in your life. Maybe we'll give
12:42
him a hug and let him
12:44
know what's up by him and
12:46
beer. Yeah, I mean, and there's
12:48
so much that's come out over
12:50
this too that's come out over
12:52
this too that people that people
12:54
that people that people didn't really
12:56
understand, not only about. Gordon, but
12:59
you know, vice versa, there's been
13:01
a lot of good pictures being
13:03
shown of Gordon with his family
13:05
and stuff. And I've definitely seen
13:07
messages of people being like, oh,
13:09
wow, you know, I mean, he
13:11
was a private person. By design,
13:13
he was a very private person.
13:15
So, you know, he didn't talk
13:17
about it too much, which is
13:19
completely fine. the go fund me
13:21
was he had messaged me he's
13:23
like hey you know we set
13:25
this up you know do you
13:27
think you can maybe share it
13:29
with some people and I was
13:31
just like hey don't worry man
13:33
give me the like we're gonna
13:35
hit the ground running don't you
13:37
worry about that so yeah he
13:39
was he was definitely floored by
13:41
that and And so it's it's
13:43
all appreciated for sure. And I
13:45
definitely want to give out a
13:47
shout out to not only Brad,
13:49
because I mean, you know, we
13:51
were talking through all this stuff
13:53
and trying to work together, you
13:56
know, through this time, but also
13:58
John. Phillips our boss is actually
14:00
in in the chat and and
14:02
a lot of people might not
14:04
know this but I mean John
14:06
John originally hired Gordon for boot
14:08
when Gordon you know got into
14:10
this industry so and then also
14:12
brought John from maximum PC to
14:14
PC world so like John has
14:16
been very instrumental in in getting
14:18
Gordon where where he he needed
14:20
to be and kind of seeing
14:22
that and also I mean the
14:24
pivot to pivot to I just
14:26
said that. And also Gordon doing
14:28
video, he understood that Gordon was
14:30
so beloved on video and helped
14:32
to unleash that as well. So
14:34
thank you John, we all work
14:36
together. I mean, that's what I
14:38
love also about this PC World
14:40
team is everybody's here, everybody's supportive
14:42
of each other and obviously Gordon
14:44
impacted all of us in major
14:46
ways. So. Definitely. Yeah. Most of
14:48
the people on staff here. We
14:50
don't have a lot of turn
14:53
over here and a lot of
14:55
people actually did come from maximum
14:57
PC feature kind of a deal.
14:59
I used to freelance with them,
15:01
I've been the freelance for PC
15:03
gamer etc. So a lot of
15:05
people on staff have known Gordon
15:07
10, 15, 20 plus years. So.
15:09
Yeah, no, and I mean, I
15:11
was even, I was talking to
15:13
Steve. We had a phone call
15:15
too and and and I was
15:17
just like, yeah, like, like I
15:19
was listing off all the people
15:21
that that that. was at maximum
15:23
PC that work here now that
15:25
you know a lot of people
15:27
don't even realize like yeah you
15:29
John Catherine Mike Brown even you
15:31
know Alena was you know involved
15:33
in there as well so it's
15:35
just like like really a lot
15:37
of the spirit of maximum PC
15:39
moved over here as well so
15:41
yeah it's fun times for sure
15:43
but the family appreciates it I
15:45
mean the poring of the outpouring
15:48
of support has been awesome which
15:50
is awesome and they definitely do
15:52
feel it. And I actually want
15:54
to take this time to thank
15:56
them for definitely being awesome. for
15:58
sure and so sorry for what
16:00
the they're dealing with but but
16:02
I did ask if they had
16:04
had a special message to share
16:06
they were involved in the initial
16:08
news stuff for sure you know
16:10
we worked with the family to
16:12
be able to get the news
16:14
out but you know I was
16:16
like hey do you want me
16:18
to have something for the actual
16:20
podcast to to read or play
16:22
and and actually they Together the
16:24
family wrote something and we have
16:26
a little video that we can
16:28
play now that is actually narrated
16:30
by his son Glenn And then
16:32
they they edit it and premiere
16:34
So yeah, we we're gonna go
16:36
in and play it now. So
16:38
yeah and you all have made
16:40
abundantly clear that he was loved
16:42
by everyone through thick and thin.
16:45
He always had time to talk
16:47
to everyone that he met about
16:49
PC Anything, friends, family strangers, and
16:51
a famous story within the family
16:53
that I think illustrates this is
16:55
while my mom was in labor
16:57
at the hospital with me, a
16:59
nurse recognized my dad and they
17:01
started chatting about hardware. My mom
17:03
was dumbfounded at the time, but
17:05
we always joked about it as
17:07
a family about he was so
17:09
famous and he always played it
17:11
off as him just being a
17:13
nerd about tech. To him, it
17:15
has never been about the fame
17:17
or the money. Always about the
17:19
facts and the people that wanted
17:21
to know the latest. Whenever I
17:23
asked him how famous he was,
17:25
he always said, you know who's
17:27
famous? Steve from Gameers-Nexis, the people
17:29
love him. I once asked dad
17:31
why he didn't go work for
17:33
a larger tech company since he
17:35
knew so many people, and he
17:37
told me it was so he
17:39
could be near his family. I
17:42
believe he meant that, but I
17:44
also believed it was because he
17:46
loved his work. and reporting to
17:48
the world the latest in PC
17:50
hardware was a dream job to
17:52
him. Dad was the rare person
17:54
who loved his job so much,
17:56
no monetary gain could compromise his
17:58
unyielding dedication to tech journalism. As
18:01
Adam has said, he was very reluctant
18:03
to take the position as editor-in-chief at
18:05
Maxim PC because he would rather be
18:07
on the front, writing stories and recording
18:09
videos. Something I remember him telling me
18:11
was that his greatest story he never
18:13
wrote was about the Rodney King riots.
18:15
He was in college at Estate at
18:17
the time, and he was sad he
18:19
wasn't able to be there in LA
18:21
where the action was happening. Lastly, there's
18:24
a picture of him I took in
18:26
high school for a class that I
18:28
would like to share. of him in
18:30
our garage testing hardware. The title is
18:32
Mad Scientists. I think it captures the
18:34
personality very well as he's a lot
18:36
more stoic at home, always in a
18:38
room testing the latest hardware. I remember
18:40
watching an episode of hardcore hardware and
18:42
thinking, that's dad? He was swearing and
18:44
yelling so much. I don't think he
18:47
liked the picture very much because to
18:49
him he looked angry, but in my
18:51
opinion it shows who dad was to
18:53
me. My sister Marianne, our
18:55
mom, and I would like to thank
18:57
everyone who is from their support. It
19:00
really makes us happy to know that
19:02
dad had so many supports around the
19:04
world and we are certain he loved
19:07
you all just as much as you
19:09
loved him. Yeah, well made, well made,
19:11
thank you. Excellent. Very touching. Putting together
19:14
and yeah, that photo actually Glenn in
19:16
his own right is amazing photographer. That's
19:18
something Gordon and... Glenn were able to
19:21
share together and it was a I'd
19:23
actually never seen that photo so yeah
19:25
that definitely definitely encapsulates Gordon. That's a
19:28
touching tribute like every bit of that
19:30
is excellent so if the family is
19:32
watching this that's like I wish I
19:35
had put some together like that for
19:37
my dad when he passed like that's
19:39
well done. You tell him in a
19:42
lot to you. It's funny to me
19:44
that the two the two photos that
19:46
jumped out at me from that video
19:49
was there's two photos where he's holding
19:51
swaddled babies fresh in the hospital and
19:53
in one he's wearing a maximum PC
19:56
shirt and then the other one he's
19:58
wearing a radar shirt. How bad sit
20:00
there on this baby representing that Gordon
20:03
man. Yeah and actually yeah Derek did
20:05
tell me that story when the other
20:07
day yeah she was like no I
20:10
was literally right there on you know
20:12
on the the in the delivery room
20:14
and somebody looked up and was like
20:17
oh hey Gordon for maximum PC and
20:19
they just started talking you know and
20:21
she was just like hey can we
20:24
wait? for you know a couple of
20:26
minutes to do. Yeah, because he was
20:28
wearing his maximum PC shirt and yeah,
20:31
no, I mean, yeah. Yeah, and it's
20:33
true what Glenn in there had said
20:35
that, I mean, he would literally talk
20:38
to anybody, you know, if people wanted
20:40
to talk to him, you know, gave
20:42
people the time of day, respected everybody
20:45
and and I mean, that's one of
20:47
my favorite memories, earliest and favorite memories
20:49
of working with Gordon is that like...
20:52
like carrying around a camera just following
20:54
Gordon to meeting after meeting at CES,
20:56
Computex, whatever, and like going into the
20:59
room and just seeing people's eyes light
21:01
up when they would see him because
21:03
it's just like, hey Gordon's here, like,
21:06
oh wow, I can't wait, you know,
21:08
to talk with Gordon about what we
21:10
have going on, or just talk to
21:13
him in general, and like he always
21:15
gave people the time of day and
21:17
just really cared, you know, and that
21:20
was... Obviously a big part of what
21:22
he cared about was was the people
21:24
were all in this industry together doing
21:27
Doing amazing stuff and you know It's
21:29
definitely something that mattered a lot to
21:31
him Yeah, yep, yep. I I remember
21:33
the first time I think I met
21:36
you the first CEDS I met you
21:38
Adam that was the one where we
21:40
interviewed Rajakadori right after they go I
21:43
believe was announced And I like that
21:45
video a lot. I mean, it's to
21:47
accidentally get Roger to spill something I
21:50
don't think he was supposed to. But
21:52
the thing that stood out to me
21:54
after that, a lesson I really learned
21:57
from working alongside Gordon on the floor,
21:59
was after. Afterwards, like, that video, I
22:01
forget what it took, 20, 30 minutes,
22:04
afterwards, the three of us went over
22:06
to a corner, they picked up a
22:08
conversation to start, you know, just shooting
22:11
a shit about the old days, which
22:13
eventually leans into, hey, what do you
22:15
think about this trend going on, this
22:18
trend going on? And he really cared
22:20
about the people. There's a reason he
22:22
always says never attacked people, never even
22:25
attacked companies, just say, hey, don't buy
22:27
it. I think the fact that he
22:29
did care about people so much and
22:32
wanted to talk to people so much
22:34
as part as what made him such
22:36
a great reporter. And I wonder a
22:39
lot that day. Yeah, I mean, the
22:41
technical side of being a reporter obviously
22:43
is having connections, but it wasn't just
22:46
that he wasn't just trying to do
22:48
that. So, yeah, so many good memories.
22:50
You know, I think, you know, you
22:53
know, you know, you know, you know,
22:55
you know, you know, you know, you
22:57
know, wrap this up pretty soon, but
23:00
like I know there's been a lot
23:02
of questions about memorial services. That's something
23:04
that I've been chatting with with the
23:07
family as well. So we don't have
23:09
anything to talk about here today. We
23:11
are going to do something here on
23:14
the podcast, gather a bunch of people
23:16
from the industry and coworkers and things
23:18
like that. So, you know, I have
23:21
nothing. right now. No news and there
23:23
will be memorial services, you know, for
23:25
close friends and family and stuff like
23:28
that. So, yeah, and once again, in
23:30
the meantime, you know, share kind thoughts,
23:32
contribute to the go fund me if
23:35
you can. You know, they definitely are
23:37
seeing all the awesome messages and all
23:39
that stuff. So, yeah, who we, it's...
23:42
It's developing. You know, we're all working
23:44
this through in real time, so thank
23:46
you so much for for being here
23:49
with us and working through it with
23:51
us. Yeah, and definitely all the love
23:53
and support from the community everywhere. Yeah.
23:56
Yeah, the man, the myth, the legend
23:58
for sure. And yes, I saw somebody
24:00
in the chat talk about, you know,
24:03
how we can memorialize him with awards,
24:05
like the bigger bar better award. There's
24:07
definitely some fun thoughts for sure. You
24:10
know, like I want to get a
24:12
bigger bar better, you know, merch made,
24:14
things like that. I mean, one of
24:17
the things I'm also tossing around is
24:19
like a big charity live stream that
24:21
maybe we can do, that, you know,
24:24
we can build PCs, give them away.
24:26
you know, contribute to a charity that's
24:28
something I talked with, with, with there
24:31
as well about doing, because, you know,
24:33
like, he loved giving back, he loved
24:35
helping people out. So, you know, the
24:38
ways that I want to help honors
24:40
legacy is continuing to, to take those
24:42
journalistic practices that he had taught me,
24:45
but also just help people and continue
24:47
to build the relationships with the community.
24:49
you know, and memorialize him. He's obviously
24:52
a huge part of all of us.
24:54
And I mean, the full nerd, like,
24:56
I mean, to be honest, it doesn't,
24:59
it's hard to feel like it's called
25:01
the full nerd without him around, because
25:03
he was the fullest of nerds for
25:06
sure. He gave up with the name.
25:08
Yeah, yeah. But yeah, like, well, I
25:10
mean, but he wanted to continue. He
25:13
really cared obviously about the work we
25:15
do here. PC world and on the
25:17
full nerd, so. we will continue that
25:20
you know yeah and figure it out
25:22
so something I was kind of we
25:24
this is just kind of on the
25:26
fly talking about this week we just
25:29
got back to work yesterday and we're
25:31
preparing most many of us to fly
25:33
out to CES so we haven't had
25:36
a lot of time to discuss this
25:38
kind of stuff yet but I like
25:40
the idea of a bigger bar a
25:43
better word if I can convince People
25:46
above me to introduce something like that.
25:48
Another idea I had in my head
25:50
was making a permanent landing page for
25:52
the PC World Hall of Fame, hardware
25:55
Hall of Fame. Yes. Honor, like Gordon
25:57
Mong's PC World Hall of Fame or
25:59
something. Yeah, I like that. Other people
26:01
about that. I think that. I like
26:04
that. Somebody was also saying like next
26:06
time we do a Hall of Fame
26:08
inductee episode that we intentionally need to
26:10
get the RTX 2080 in there before
26:13
the teeny TI. I was like, is
26:15
that I will have a heart attack
26:17
and you will have no full nerd
26:19
goal. Oh, that's hilarious. Yeah. Anyway, we're
26:22
still talking about a lot of the
26:24
stuff. We will, you know, keep people
26:26
informed in what we figure out. There's
26:28
still a lot of good discussions going
26:31
over on Discord. I actually started a
26:33
forum post on Discord that you can
26:35
put your favorite Gordon memories. So we've
26:37
shared a lot of fun stuff in
26:39
there. You know, I don't know if
26:42
we'll do some sort of super cut
26:44
of old memories or something. I don't
26:46
know. There's still so much to think
26:48
about, you think about, you know, you
26:51
know. and plenty of time to continue
26:53
to think about Gordon. But I mean
26:55
if there's one thing that Gordon wanted
26:57
to make sure that we do is
27:00
continue to cover the news and we
27:02
are just about to ship off to
27:04
CES. to cover that. A lot of
27:06
news is going to be happening there.
27:09
It's always like, at least for the
27:11
PC space, it's like the second biggest
27:13
trade show. I feel like Computex is
27:15
like the first one. Oh, definitely. Yeah,
27:18
and then CS is huge and that's
27:20
obviously like a big deal. I mean,
27:22
just Gordon absolutely loved being in the
27:24
trenches. I mean, like, like, week-long CES,
27:27
like, you know, we'd get up. towards
27:29
the end of the week and I'd
27:31
be like, hey, how many hours of
27:33
sleep you got? And he's like, yeah,
27:36
like three, I'm fine. You know, I'll
27:38
just drink some more coffee. And like
27:40
he just, he just, he just. He
27:42
used those as a great event, as
27:45
a great situation, not just together news
27:47
and insights about all the trends and
27:49
all the stuff that's going on. But
27:51
he genuinely liked people. So he would
27:54
go to like every party and make
27:56
sure he lined up with like everyone
27:58
who he was hoping to see. yes
28:00
so he worked long days but it
28:03
was not just to cover the news
28:05
it was also to see the people
28:07
and he loved every second of it
28:09
yeah and like you know I've been
28:11
putting together our schedule for for video
28:14
stuff you know and Mark's gonna be
28:16
there for writing John's gonna be there
28:18
as well doing some stuff unfortunately you're
28:20
not gonna be able to go this
28:23
this year I was supposed to go
28:25
people know I was supposed to go
28:27
but I just got diagnosed with COVID
28:29
yesterday so I'm not gonna go get
28:32
you got sick yeah yeah so feel
28:34
better but you know obviously you will
28:36
be busy at home there's there's lots
28:38
going on but yeah going over the
28:41
schedule I was just like oh man
28:43
I wish I could sometimes like it
28:45
really is hard to schedule everything even
28:47
though we're there for a whole week
28:50
to try to see everybody and it's
28:52
just like you know like so like
28:54
and he always made it a point
28:56
so Yeah, I try to try to
28:59
see people as much, but yeah, so
29:01
I'll be on the ground shooting video.
29:03
I think we talked about this earlier.
29:05
So Willis is actually helping man, or
29:08
our sister channel. Yeah, a sister channel.
29:10
Yeah, so Tech Hive, if you want
29:12
to go subscribe over there, T-E-C-H-H-I-E, Tech
29:14
Hive. And that's the logo is like
29:17
yellow, like a. beehive kind of thing.
29:19
It's our smart, smart home, smart tech
29:21
brand channel specifically for that. And yeah,
29:23
I'll be... doing that as CS and
29:26
it'll be the first time that I
29:28
won't be on the ground with Adam
29:30
and just making sure he doesn't eat
29:32
guns off the floor or pick up
29:34
USBs on the show floor. Yeah, somebody
29:37
earlier, I'm sorry I can't remember who
29:39
said it, but yeah, somebody was like,
29:41
oh, you know, be sure to tell
29:43
Adam that if he sees gum on
29:46
the floor that it's not free candy.
29:48
And I was like, well, what about
29:50
yellow snow, but no, I, we'll still
29:52
be there. making videos, you know, continuing
29:55
what Gordon loved to do as well.
29:57
Amazing articles, I'm sure, on PC World,
29:59
you know. I mean, we know rumors,
30:01
there's definitely been some 50-80 boxes that
30:04
appeared on some news feeds, so I
30:06
guess we'll see what comes to that.
30:08
Yeah. Looking like it's gonna be a
30:10
big CES for the piece. Yeah, yeah.
30:13
And then every year on the website,
30:15
there's always a best of show for
30:17
PC World where all the staff members
30:19
will include like their picks and awards.
30:22
So that's always a big highlight for
30:24
me. Yeah, we run a couple of
30:26
them. Like, we'll do one. Someone worse
30:28
with us, Matt Smith, who is awesome.
30:31
He has a retro gaming channel. Go
30:33
check it out. He's doing roundups of
30:35
the best laptops and monitors. So if
30:37
you're specifically interested in that, go look
30:40
for those towards the end of the
30:42
week. But towards the end of the
30:44
week, we run every year, just everyone
30:46
on staff. What's the coolest stuff that
30:49
you saw? Like, there are no. People
30:51
are like, can I write about this
30:53
even though it's not a PC? Can
30:55
I write about this? It's like, yeah,
30:58
I just want to see the cool
31:00
stuff, man. Let's get the cool stuff
31:02
out there. And that's what that's going
31:04
to be at the end of the
31:06
week. Yeah. Yeah. So once again, subscribe
31:09
over on Tech Hive if you want
31:11
to see home products that enrich your
31:13
home life. Yes. The pitch that I.
31:15
that I say. John's actually going to
31:18
contribute some videos over there as well,
31:20
so you know, if you're curious. Question
31:22
is Will Smith going to see us?
31:24
He's not, but he is actually going
31:27
to help do the the watch parties
31:29
for the major keynotes. So for Intel,
31:31
AMD, and Envideo, please join Will Smith
31:33
for doing a watch party over on
31:36
the PC World channel. So yeah, I
31:38
should say that. that goes subscribe around
31:40
Peace Air World if you haven't. That's
31:42
where all the the video stuff is
31:45
going to be and and yeah so
31:47
that we will be a watch party.
31:49
Will has reached reached reached out to
31:51
some some people to join them as
31:54
well so I'm excited there's there's a
31:56
couple guests that will join them for
31:58
some of those keynotes that is exciting.
32:00
I may or may not join them
32:03
depending how I'm feeling so there might
32:05
be a random Brad up here. Yeah,
32:07
yeah, and we will have, we will
32:09
have an episode of the podcast from
32:12
the show floor like usual, kind of
32:14
covering the news and then also our
32:16
best of stuff. Usually we kind of
32:18
aim for Thursday, so I would say
32:21
if you want to pencil something in,
32:23
it's going to be like Thursday afternoon-ish.
32:25
So, doesn't... Afternoon, West Coast time. Yes,
32:27
thank you. Yeah, so, there's that and,
32:30
yeah, seeing people and connecting with people,
32:32
I mean... Like Gordon, I'm excited to
32:34
connect with people. I know there's going
32:36
to be a lot of good Gordon
32:38
memories shared and all that stuff. So
32:41
looking forward to that. Yeah, anything else
32:43
you want to cover before we get
32:45
out of here, Brad? I don't think
32:47
so. Gordon Robsman. I'm very touched by
32:50
the support that the community has shown
32:52
him. And again, like, that takes such
32:54
a huge burden off of his family.
32:56
So thank you to everybody. Definitely. And
32:59
I feel like he would have been...
33:01
He would have been... Yeah, he would
33:03
have been embarrassed. He's like, no, no,
33:05
no, no, no, it's not a big
33:08
deal. Why is everybody, you know? Don't
33:10
worry about it. I'm just, I'm just
33:12
here. He's a very humble man. So,
33:14
yeah. Yeah, we'll continue on. And, um...
33:17
And cover the news like the way
33:19
Gordon likes. So thank you. Thank you
33:21
again for the support. Thank you again
33:23
for for being with us here during
33:26
this time and figuring this out and
33:28
upholding Gordon's legacy. I will say I
33:30
have heard a couple people in comments
33:32
being like, hey, is this something that
33:35
you or that Gordon has inspired some
33:37
people to start? their own YouTube channel,
33:39
their own writing, things like that. Yes,
33:41
please, you know, if there's any way
33:44
we can help, you know, let us
33:46
know. Like I love that, you know,
33:48
being able to share that knowledge and
33:50
stuff like that. So. I, uh, for
33:53
Gordon's Obituary, we ran a lot of
33:55
quotes from a bunch of different people.
33:57
John handled that initial getting it up,
33:59
but I handled most of the updates.
34:02
And we put my email address in
34:04
there and said, hey, if you have
34:06
any good memories to share, we can't
34:08
run them all, but we'll read them
34:10
all and we'll get a bunch in
34:13
there. And it was absolutely mind boggling
34:15
and eye opening between the emails I
34:17
got and seeing the comments on the
34:19
go fund me, just how many people
34:22
who said like. You know, I'm not
34:24
a tech-tuber, I'm not a PC journalist,
34:26
but I work in tech because of
34:28
the rigorous analysis and no BS that
34:31
I grew up, Gordon instilled that in
34:33
me, and I have my career in
34:35
tech to thank him for that. So
34:37
it's just a really awesome thing to
34:40
see. Yeah, no, and I'm not much
34:42
of a read-up person, but I even
34:44
got on like, read it and saw
34:46
the amazing posts that people put up
34:49
and I actually... came across somebody who
34:51
was in the computer lab in high
34:53
school with Gordon. Oh. So I started
34:55
DMing and personally and getting some memories
34:58
and stuff like there for sure. So
35:00
we'll share a lot about this, you
35:02
know, when we get together memorial episodes.
35:04
But yeah, he even shared a photo
35:07
of Gordon in the yearbook and Gordon
35:09
was wearing a bow tie. I was
35:11
like, can you imagine Gordon with longer
35:13
hair at a bow tie? Yeah, I
35:16
gotta show that. And actually, Dara hadn't
35:18
even seen that even seen that photo.
35:20
I was like, have you seen his
35:22
yearbook photo? So I showed that to
35:25
her. A lot of people's lives, so
35:27
yeah. I think it would be good
35:29
to works in space to Memorial episode
35:31
to include some of those reader thoughts
35:33
as well. Oh, 100%. Yeah, yeah, that's
35:36
also why in the Discord like favorite
35:38
memories and things like that. So yeah,
35:40
lots of lots to talk about. I
35:42
think we'll just end it here. Yeah,
35:45
not like I said, not a full
35:47
episode, not going over stuff. Just kind
35:49
of we got to get to packing
35:51
for CES and and covering all the
35:54
new. So, so. Yeah, thanks Brad for
35:56
for joining and working with
35:58
me. Thank you John, all
36:00
all the PC World
36:03
Team, everybody, all the
36:05
Thank you Adam, the people. Adam's done a lot
36:07
done a lot of work
36:09
behind the scenes, the scenes, and I'm so
36:12
short. Yeah. No, it's, and thank you Willis
36:14
for for controlling the verticals
36:16
and always keep that around
36:18
like verticals and horizontals of
36:20
course. was, the loved that. and
36:23
horizontals, of course. thanks everybody. that. So, anyway,
36:25
thanks next week for tune in
36:27
of CES plenty of CES talk. So, everybody.
36:29
see you later. you later.
