----- UPDATED REVIEW BELOW ----- All of QCode's shows are expertly produced and wildly immersive and Left Right Game is no exception. Solid writing, a compelling story, great acting. I agree with other reviews, sometimes you have no idea what is happening in the story because you're given mysterious sound design and no expository dialogue to help fill in the blanks. Like their other show Borrasca, there's a framing device that's a super bummer to sit thru before you get back to Alice's story. And, like most other QCode shows, you can't question the premise too much or the logic of the story starts to fray. Just sit back and enjoy the story, it's a wonderful, wild ride. ----- UPDATE -----I originally gave this 4 stars. Would have been an easy 5-stars if care had been taken in adapting the original story from the nosleep subreddit. Much of this story is lost in translation because the producer's relied heavily on sound design over expository dialogue to help clarify visuals and explain key components of the mystery. I understand why people dislike "exposition" but goddam, it's a NPR-style podcast with a narrator, you couldn't justify explaining central plot points? If you search Left Right Game on youtube, you'll find a 6 hour reading of the original story. That's right. To get the most out of this audio drama, all you have to do is find an equally-long, second audio drama and listen to it too!It boggles the mind.
Started off really strong and intriguing, but halfway through, around the forest parts, became just too muddled and confusing, especially since it was hard to decipher what was happening by the sound effects. I mean, squelch squelch car crash meat sound! What was that?! Your guess is as good as mine. Honestly I liked Tom's parts the best.
Cool concept, great soundscrape, but key parts were poorly executed. The creators apparently hope you can accurately understand things just based off sound, but there were entire sequences and occurrences that were missed because of this. For example, one characters gets a limb amputated, but you aren't really aware till characters discuss phantom limb episodes later.
Awesome audio drama! Kept me interested the entire time, great effects, great acting. Some really intense scenes that I wish I could've pictured better, could've used a little more help there. Great production and story!
Compelling, mysterious, and a little horrific. The audio production and acting is top notch, completely immersing, and the story is no different. I could see where at times it relies on sounds a little too much and it is confusing as to what is happening, but it usually clears it up if you keep listening. You can also always reference the r/nosleep post, which is where this podcast originated. So great.
Ah, I'm so conflicted about this podcast. On the one hand, the sound design and the acting is of incredibly high quality and, paired with the story and how much I enjoyed learning about the characters, that would easily earn a five-star-rating from me. That being said, I found it frustrating that, especially during the last couple of episodes, we are left to try to guess what is happening because we are only given audio clues. Personally, I also thought that the ending could have used a bit more polishing. But even so, I'd gladly recommend The Left Right Game to anyone interested; it is an engaging and short podcast that I flew through.
Awesome story and talented actors. One of my favorite podcasts.
Audio is just amazing. The story is novel and different. Can't get enough! Needs a 6th star as its incredible this is a podcast.
I really loved the plot and the voice actors were awesome. The sound experience was great, as promised. However, near the end it was more and more complicated to understand what was going on, without description. The ending flew over my head and I had to check the internet to get it.
this is well done on all fronts.
Every once in a while this show thinks it is a little smarter than it really is, but overall it is SO damn good, so I forgive those rare moments unequivocally. Incredible audio quality and production standards, fun story, can't wait for the tv adaptation.
One of the earlier scary stories Qcode adapted from Reddit, and one of the better ones. It's not perfect. I'd say that some of the characters are unbelievable in their obstinacy, and the ending didn't answer as many questions as I'd have liked. Still, worth the listen.
Exciting, bizarre, and at times horrifying podcast. Truly imaginative. I hope it returns for another season and doesn't leave us hanging.
This is the greatest fictional podcast ever. I've been following Qcode ever since -- imagine the Stranger Things, add the best sound editing ever, and then turn it into a compelling series.
Great story, but bad audio presentation of it.Creators tried so hard to make its pure audio performance by avoiding narrator voice that they ruined the story itself. Screeching and roaring and other special audio effects are good for creating eerie atmosphere, but aren’t enough to describe whats going on… after few times when I went to the original text version in order to understand what I just listened through I ended up stopping listening podcast and continued story by reading.
Meh, I didn't get it.
I stumbled upon this podcast in a list of fictional podcasts and decided to give it a listen. I've spent the last two days power listening to the whole thing. Its a great listening experience, especially with headphones which I recommend. The story is interesting and intriguing. It all wraps up much better than I was expecting. Highly recommend it!
I've read some reviews of this podcast. people are complaining left and right (hah, get it?) that they can't know what's happening based on sounds alone - yes, "squelch, squelch, meat sounds, shriek" happens plenty in this podcast. and I just think, wow. it's such a lazy approach to consuming fiction. the audience has a duty to engage with the story and b u i l d upon the foundation the creator provided. you're supposed to actively imagine an outcome as horrific as you can stomach in stories like this one. this story allows you to make your own personal monster. you have an active role as a listener. you participate in the way the story gets told.but, yes, there are moments when weird spooky sounds happen and it's up to you to interpret what they mean. if you prefer to be passive and get a straightforward story that explains everything to the listener step by step, leaving no room for engagement, skip this podcast. but I must say, the weird spooky sounds are superbly made, and the soundscaping is quite literally insane here. hats off to the sound designers and actors alike. captivating depictions of grievous bodily harm.and yeah, the story is great. I read it on reddit when it came out and I very much prefer it in the audio format. the original shines in this medium. I highly recommend giving it a listen, especially if you're into found footage, uncanny valley and characters doomed by the narrative, trapped in a story that that unbeknownst to them is just a giant loop.
out of this world, the storyline is addictive.
This podcast felt like an audio-only version of an episode of the Twilight Zone. Loved every minute!
