Hello friends and welcome to the Liz
0:02
Moody podcast where every week we are
0:04
sharing real science, real stories and realistic
0:06
tools that actually level up every part
0:09
of your life. I'm your house Liz Moody
0:11
and I'm a best-selling author and longtime journalist.
0:13
In today's episode I'm going to share three
0:16
things to stop doing in your 20s and
0:18
three things to stop doing in your 30s
0:20
to be happier, healthier and wealthier. Last week
0:22
we shared three things to start doing
0:24
in your 20s and 30s and you
0:26
definitely don't have to listen to that
0:28
one first. But I recommend queuing it
0:30
up after this one if you missed
0:32
it, because there's a ton of valuable
0:34
information in there that you will not
0:37
hear anywhere else. These things to stop
0:39
are based on years of interviewing high
0:41
performers and world-class experts, and also they're
0:43
just all the things that I wish
0:45
I had known earlier, so please learn
0:47
from my mistakes so you do not
0:49
have to make them yourself. And also,
0:51
if you're in your 40s or 50s
0:53
or beyond, there's still going to be a
0:55
ton of good stuff in here for you.
0:57
These are lessons that many of us are
1:00
still learning throughout our lives. And also, there
1:02
will be a ton of wisdom that you
1:04
can share with your kids, with nephews, with
1:06
nieces, with younger friends. Let's jump right in
1:09
with things to stop doing in your 20s.
1:11
I'm just going to be so blunt right
1:13
out the gate. You need to stop spending
1:15
so much time on your phone and
1:17
particularly scrolling on social media. This is
1:19
the root cause of so many of
1:22
our life problems and honestly it truly
1:24
sucks that this is a problem previous
1:26
generations did not have to deal with
1:28
in the same way. But scrolling on
1:30
social media is making us compare our
1:32
lives to other people's which makes us
1:34
feel like our lives aren't enough. It's
1:36
making us buy things that we don't
1:39
want which is blowing our budgets. It's
1:41
making us terrified about the world because
1:43
instead of choosing when we want to
1:45
consume fear-filled news the algorithms are choosing
1:47
when we consume it. So we can
1:49
be laying in bed feeling peaceful and
1:51
then bam! Suddenly there's a news post
1:53
in our feet and it spikes our
1:56
adrenaline and it makes us feel really
1:58
panicking. This is actually a...
2:00
important micro tip if you do
2:02
nothing else after listening to this
2:04
episode do this one thing actively
2:07
seek out your news do not let
2:09
your news seek you out you can
2:11
still get all of the information, whether
2:13
it's on legacy media or on podcasts
2:15
or social media accounts, just make a
2:17
list of the ones that you want
2:20
to check in and then set a
2:22
time to check in when you are
2:24
prepared to digest the information and take
2:26
action steps. Right now, so many of
2:28
us are bombarded with so much information
2:31
at such unhelpful times that it is
2:33
putting us into freeze mode. And we
2:35
are letting people hijack our attention and
2:37
hijack our emotions under the guise of
2:39
being good citizens while I... Ironically, it's
2:42
making us far less likely to take
2:44
action. Choose when you consume your news.
2:46
Do it on your own terms. It
2:48
will drastically change your mental health. And
2:50
it'll lead to you being far more
2:53
likely to process and digest the things
2:55
that are important and take action on
2:57
the things that matter. Okay, that was
2:59
a digression, but an important one and
3:01
one that I feel really, really strongly
3:04
about. It's actually wild when you think
3:06
about how we consume news. People come
3:08
into our house and they shout these
3:10
really emotionally activating things at us whenever
3:13
they feel like it throughout the day.
3:15
Okay, going back. Other negative impacts that
3:17
our phones are having, they are messing
3:19
with our neural chemistry, making it harder
3:21
for us to feel pleasure and motivation
3:23
in our daily lives. They are messing
3:25
with our ability to actually enjoy being
3:27
around people in our lives. I cannot
3:29
tell you how many times I have
3:31
seen people out at a restaurant or
3:34
I have even been out with friends
3:36
and they are scrolling instead of talking
3:38
to each other or to me. I
3:40
have a friend who's a high school
3:42
teacher and he says in the cafeteria
3:44
these days. It's just silent because everyone
3:46
is on their phones watching videos with headphones
3:48
in and it is just such an eerie
3:50
thing to picture. And here's the thing that
3:53
I think a lot of people miss when
3:55
they say we need to get off our
3:57
phones. It's hard. One of the huge reasons...
3:59
that we default to being
4:02
on our phones is because
4:04
it's way easier to passively
4:06
consume social media content than
4:09
to actively make a conversation
4:11
with someone. Making conversation comes
4:13
with pressure. It comes with
4:15
potential judgment. Your brain has to
4:18
work so much harder. And guess
4:20
what? Not despite all of those
4:22
things, but because of them, it
4:24
is so, so worth it. We
4:26
need to acknowledge that doing anything
4:28
other than social media is going
4:30
to be harder. Reading a book
4:32
is going to be harder, making plans
4:35
with a friend is going to be
4:37
harder, going for a walk is going
4:39
to be harder. And we need to
4:41
do it anyway, because in the long
4:43
run, the hard of choosing to scroll
4:45
is so much worse. It is making
4:47
us anxious, it is making us depressed,
4:49
it is making us lonely, and we
4:52
are going to wake up in our
4:54
80s and realize that we have scrolled
4:56
away literally decades of our lives. We
4:58
get to choose our hard. Choose the hard
5:00
that will make you feel so much better
5:02
in the long run. I have an entire
5:04
episode about overcoming phone addiction
5:06
with lots of science-backed tricks
5:09
that work really quickly, and
5:11
I will link that in the
5:13
show notes. But for now, I just
5:15
want you to do the real math.
5:17
What are you gaining from scrolling, and
5:19
what is it costing you? And are
5:21
you willing to pay that price? Even
5:23
the smallest steps can make a huge
5:25
difference, only having your phone in your
5:27
purse when you're hanging out with friends
5:29
or creating no scrolling hours for yourself.
5:31
Just play around, try some stuff that
5:33
works for you, and just make sure
5:35
that you are doing the math. The next
5:38
thing that I want you to stop in
5:40
your 20s is being friends with people who
5:42
make you feel bad about yourself. And before
5:44
you're like, Liz, why would it be friends
5:46
with people who make me feel bad about
5:49
myself? I want you to really think about
5:51
how you feel when you hang out with
5:53
your friends. Do you feel like you can
5:55
take on the world? Do you feel like
5:57
you love your body or at the very
5:59
least... just feel neutral about it. Do
6:02
you feel happy for their wins and like
6:04
they are happy for yours? Do they support
6:06
your relationships? Or do they
6:08
encourage you to talk shit about your
6:10
partner to feel closer to your friends?
6:13
Do they make you feel insecure about
6:15
your body either because of the things
6:17
that they say about your body or
6:19
how they treat their own? Do they make
6:21
you feel like you have to spend
6:23
money that you don't actually have? Our
6:26
20s are a time in our life
6:28
where we often have leftover relationships, relationships
6:30
bored of convenience that don't represent who
6:32
we are or who we're trying to
6:34
be. Maybe it's a dorm room friend or
6:37
someone that you worked at your first job
6:39
with. Or maybe you've just changed, you've decided
6:41
to leave your party girl years behind,
6:43
or you've realized that you've been living
6:45
a life that looks good, and now
6:47
you want to live a life that
6:49
feels good. But it is so, so
6:51
key to notice these things and to
6:53
make a change because the people that
6:55
you surround yourself with are the people
6:57
who create your vision of the world.
6:59
They're the people who calibrate what
7:01
is possible for your dreams in your
7:04
life. If you have friends who believe
7:06
that success is possible, that belief rubs
7:08
off on you. And if you have friends who
7:10
believe that everything is an uphill battle, that
7:12
it's all going to turn out badly no
7:14
matter what you do, well, guess what you're
7:17
going to start believing? And guess what's
7:19
going to start penetrating your subconscious
7:21
and infiltrating your actions? Your friends
7:24
can also make your daily habits
7:26
extremely easy or extremely hard. You
7:28
can focus on your health when you're in
7:30
a group of binge drinkers, but you will
7:32
feel like you are swimming against the current
7:34
the entire time. If you want to take on
7:37
a new habit, the single way to make
7:39
it easier is to surround yourself with people
7:41
already doing that habit. If you want to
7:43
eat well, surround yourself with people who are
7:45
excited about farmers markets, who want to test
7:47
out a salad recipe that they saw on
7:49
social media on a Saturday night. If you
7:51
want to work out, surround yourself with people
7:54
who are going to invite you on hikes
7:56
and who want to go to the gym
7:58
so you can gossip between sets together. We
8:00
are social creatures, we are evolutionarily
8:02
hardwired to fit in. Bottom line,
8:04
your friends are a huge part
8:06
of who you become and your
8:08
20s are the decade of becoming.
8:11
Choose your friends wisely. That said,
8:13
the last thing that I want you
8:15
to stop doing in your 20s is
8:17
putting pressure on yourself. If this feels
8:19
contradictory to what I just
8:21
said, it's not because I want you to
8:23
take the pressure... off of having to make
8:26
this dream friend group that you'll have for
8:28
life that exists mostly in social media photos
8:30
where they are definitely fighting in the group
8:32
chat behind the scenes. I want you to
8:35
experiment. Your 20s is the best time to
8:37
try hanging out with people that you had
8:39
never considered being friends with because this is
8:41
how you figure out who you love and
8:43
who you want to fill your time with.
8:46
It's the best time to try
8:48
new jobs or try living in
8:50
new cities. And yes, you can
8:52
100% do all of this at
8:54
other times in your life, but
8:56
the consequences in your 20s are
8:59
so much lower. Your 20s are
9:01
the ideal time to take risks.
9:03
And one of the biggest things
9:05
that keeps people from taking those
9:07
risks is this bullshit story of
9:09
where you should be. Shoulds are
9:11
bullshit rules created by other people
9:13
to make themselves feel better about
9:15
their own choices. Take chances, relish
9:17
the bad dates. Once you have
9:19
a life partner, you won't get
9:21
to share the weird stories and
9:23
laugh about them with your friends
9:25
later. The parts of your life
9:27
that feel the most off the
9:29
rails are the parts that you
9:31
are going to miss the most
9:33
because as you get older your
9:35
life naturally falls more on track
9:37
and you miss waking up and
9:39
not knowing where the train is going
9:42
to go every day. And maybe that
9:44
metaphor is too extended but on
9:46
behalf of everyone in their 30s
9:49
and 40s and 50s, enjoy the
9:51
mess. Your 20s is such a delightful
9:53
time to embrace messiness. And if you're
9:55
worried about how that mess is going
9:57
to impact your future, first of all,
9:59
that experimentation is going to give
10:01
you so many more options for
10:03
the future. And second, just spin
10:05
it. A huge mistake that a
10:08
ton of people make with resumes
10:10
and cover letters is just straightforwardly
10:12
listing all of their previous work
10:14
experiences when really it is an
10:16
opportunity to take your previous experience
10:18
and piece together a story of
10:20
why you are a great fit
10:22
for the job that you're applying
10:24
for. Take your real experience and
10:26
turn it into a narrative that's
10:28
in your favor. That time that
10:31
you spent working at a hostel
10:33
in Greece, were you learning hospitality
10:35
skills? Were you managing numerous varied
10:37
personalities from different cultures and backgrounds?
10:39
There is value in almost every
10:41
life experience and teasing out that
10:43
value is going to open up
10:45
so many possibilities for you. Micro
10:48
habits are a major part of
10:50
my life. They're small, consistent parts
10:52
of my routine that have significant
10:54
impacts on my health and my
10:56
happiness. They're easy to get started,
10:58
unlike something like waking up at
11:01
5 a.m. And they are easy
11:03
to maintain. One important micro habit
11:05
of mine, especially as we are
11:07
in the dull drums of winter,
11:09
is drinking AG1. It supports my
11:11
energy, my cognitive function, my microbiome,
11:13
and so much more just by
11:15
drinking one delicious beverage a day,
11:17
and it is a super easy
11:19
habit to maintain. I like to
11:21
think of AG1 like an incredibly
11:23
bioavailable multivitamin as a research-backed foundational
11:26
nutritional supplement delivering vitamins, minerals, whole
11:28
foods, or superfoods and adaptogens in
11:30
one daily health drink. Drinking AG1
11:32
in the afternoons keeps my gut
11:34
feeling loved and supported nutritionally. It
11:36
keeps my mind common clear and
11:38
it keeps my energy levels boosted.
11:40
It's like everything that you wish
11:42
coffee did for you at 3
11:44
p.m. but a million times better.
11:46
It will not keep you up
11:49
at night. It won't make you
11:51
feel jittery. And it is so,
11:53
so delicious. People always think that
11:55
it's gonna taste like really green,
11:57
but it's more tropical, it's more
11:59
tropical, it's more little treat. Valentine's
12:01
Day is the name of the
12:03
game this month and it isn't
12:05
just about showing love to others,
12:07
it is about self-love too. Choose
12:09
to love and nourish yourself this
12:11
year by creating a new healthy
12:14
habit for 2025. So try AG1
12:16
for yourself. It's actually something that
12:18
I've been able to stay consistent
12:20
with and that is why I've
12:22
been partnering with AG1 for so
12:24
long. Agee1 is offering new subscribers
12:26
a free $76 gift when you
12:28
sign up. You will get a
12:30
welcome kit. You will get a
12:32
bottle of D3K2 and five free
12:34
travel packs in your first box.

12:41
That's drinkag1.com/Liz Moody to start your
12:43
new year on a healthier note.
12:46
This is shocking. The Clean Label
12:49
Project just did a study reviewing
12:51
over 160 top-selling protein powders looking
12:53
for heavy metals and other contaminants,
12:55
and they found that 47% of
12:58
them exceeded safety limits for lead,
13:00
according to California Proposition 65, with
13:02
a staggering 21% containing double the
13:04
acceptable amount of this very harmful
13:07
heavy metal. So many people consume
13:09
protein powder daily and I bet
13:11
they have no idea they're likely
13:13
also consuming lead above the safety
13:15
limits which defeats the whole point
13:18
of taking protein powder to try
13:20
and do this healthy thing for
13:22
our body. The only protein powder
13:24
company in this recent study that
13:27
came back as Clean Label Project
13:29
Transparency Certified was Puri which was
13:31
Absolutely no surprise to me because
13:33
I literally started partnering with them
13:36
over a year ago because of
13:38
their incredible commitment to clean products.
13:40
Every single batch of their products
13:42
is third party tested against more
13:44
than 200 harmful contaminants. And for
13:47
every single one of their products,
13:49
their fish oil, their creatine, their
13:51
protein powder, you can scan a
13:53
QR code on the product and
13:56
see your exact batch's third party
13:58
testing results. I have yet to
14:00
find another brand. doing this and
14:02
it makes me feel so safe
14:05
regularly consuming puree knowing that I'm
14:07
giving my body just the good
14:09
stuff without ever going above the
14:11
proposition 65 safety limits. In fact,
14:13
it took them years to formulate
14:16
a chocolate protein powder because finding
14:18
an uncontaminated cacao powder was so
14:20
difficult. Most brands do not have
14:22
that same quality standard since 65%
14:25
of the chocolate-flavored protein powders in
14:27
the study tested above the Proposition
14:29
65 limit for lead. That is
14:31
almost two of the three which
14:34
really freaks me out when you
14:36
think about all the other chocolate
14:38
protein powders. So many people are
14:40
consuming. Peery's P-W-1 Dark Chocolate Way
14:42
protein powder is so good it
14:45
tastes like really fancy chocolate milk
14:47
and you can feel good about
14:49
putting it in your body. Right
14:51
now Peery is offering my listeners
14:54
20% off Peery's already discounted subscriptions.

Also try the new elements

sparkling. It is a bold
17:18
16 ounce can of sparkling
17:21
electrolytes. There
30:26
are so many little things that you
30:28
can do to increase your happiness every
30:31
day, but did you know that painting
30:33
your nails is one of them? It
30:35
sounds so simple, but there's a ton
30:37
of studies out there that show that
30:39
the colors that you see impact your
30:41
moods. I have taken this to heart
30:44
and I have been painting my nails.
30:46
all of my favorite colors because when
30:48
you think about it you are looking
30:50
at your hands throughout the day constantly.
30:52
Olive in June is a must for
30:54
me to make this magic happen. Their
30:56
Manny system has everything you need to
30:59
give yourself a salon style manicure at
31:01
home. You will get their file and
31:03
their buffer nail clippers, acetone free polish
31:05
removal pot which I think is one
31:07
of the greatest inventions of all time
31:09
because you can take polish off of
31:12
one messed up nail without ruining the
31:14
rest of your nails. I keep this
31:16
one in my car so I always
31:18
have it on hand. It is amazing.
31:20
One of the best top codes that
31:22
I have ever used, it is the
31:25
secret to not having nails the chip,
31:27
to having a salon quality manicure. and
31:29
you will get six polishes of your
31:31
choice. Plus, I'm not done yet. You
31:33
thought I was done. I'm not done
31:35
yet. A genius tool called the Poppy,
31:37
which makes it so easy to paint
31:40
your non-dominant hand like I'm a writey.
31:42
This makes it really easy for me
31:44
to paint my right hand with my
31:46
left hand. I have been using the
31:48
Olive in June Manny System for years
31:50
now and my nails have never been
31:53
healthier. I had a horrible experience of
31:55
a salon a salon a few years
31:57
ago. absolutely destroyed my nails for months
31:59
for months. They were peeling off after
32:01
the salon manicure. It was a nightmare.
32:03
So I am so thankful to all.
32:05
in June for bringing them back to
32:08
health. Plus it is so much cheaper
32:10
per manicure, it is just $2 in
32:12
the Manny, so why would you ever
32:14
go back to like a $50 plus
32:16
per salon visit? There are a ton
32:18
of systems with pre-selected colors to choose
32:21
from, but you can create your own
32:23
system too. Right now I'm loving the
32:25
color bold and unshaken because purple is
32:27
my favorite color, so it truly makes
32:29
me so happy when I see my
32:31
purple nails and then... Fiddle Fig is
32:34
a perfect winter dark green. Remember, you
32:36
get six polishes in your Manny system.
32:38
So if you want to try it,
32:40
my two picks, you can still choose
32:42
four more of your own, or you
32:44
can just choose all six. Those are
32:46
just my suggestions. Feel free to ignore.
