RATING
This podcast right here is the reason why I decided to move from TV shows and series in general to podcasts. I gave the teaser and trailers a quick listen, decided to listen to the first episode until the end to see what it was all about and fast-forward two weeks, I had already binge listened four entire seasons, almost forgetting to take a break every few episodes, because boy, was it an intense ride. The show has a natural flow to it, with Jonathan Sims narration guiding you into this world full of weird encounters and nightmares, slowly building the setting until you suddenly see yourself caught in a spider web like trance, trying to connect the dots and figure everything out before the Archivist does. It's a nice worldbuild, A+ narration, incredible voice actors and charismatic characters that you'll love, even when they're pure evil. And only getting my friends to listen to this amazing piece of storytelling is not enough, so if you're reading my review, please believe in me. I don't recommend things lightly and this show right here deserves all the love, the spookiness and the passion it has been receiving.
Excellent storytelling and I'll be sad when it ends in just a few weeks. Thankfully we can always go back and listen again!
They are so amazing! I've listened to every episode and am thinking about listening to it again. Cant wait for the fifth season!
I have to admit that after the first episode, I thought this wasn't for me. But I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. The stories got better and the way they started to connect to each other made the series better and better! The larger narrative really builds well over time.
I love this podcast so much! I thought it was just going to be a horror anthology at first, but then when it started showing signs of containing a developing plot I got super excited!I listen to this podcast while I work the night shift, it's definitely scary and sometimes my co-workers make me jump when I run into them while working. This keeps you on your feet and wanting to work fast! I love this podcast, thank you so much for creating it <3.
The Magnus Archives was my emotional support podcast for 2020, and I'm still dealing with the fallout from the finale. I don't know what I could say about TMA that hasn't already said, but I fell in love with these characters and enjoyed following the plots as they intensified from season to season.
Amazing story, fantastic sound quality, top notch acting.
Creepy, yet surprising beautiful and sweet podcast about the death, loss, fear and love. Character and world building is really well done.
The first few seasons are great, my enjoyment dropped with Season 5 and sadly had to stop listening. I also felt the romance was sudden and forced.
Depending on the type of narrative you enjoy, this one might not be for you. I fell in love with TMA for it's deliciously spooky monster-of-the-week story-telling, which I found well written, unique and perfectly formatted, each episode portrayed as a singular supernatural event being transcribed to tape. I even enjoyed it when the show writers began to slowly include recurring themes and monsters, hinting at greater conspiracies. That was fun. The writers got really into their world-building and hey- who can blame them? However seasons 4 and 5 took a huge turn in layout. The episodes were no longer about specific incidents but rather became chapters of a singular overarching plot which- when you're talking 20+ episodes a season- means the plot is moving very, very slowly. Yes, most episodes still contain the cornerstone spooky 'statement' but now even the characters treat this as a tiring obligation, rather than what drew most listeners in to begin with. The horror aspect in the final season especially becomes repetitive, the language reduced to spooky buzzwords copy-pasted into the script like a macabre resume. Perhaps another drawback to the final seasons is the reek of pandering (I promise I'm not being one of THOSE people- good for the writers y'know. Patreon pays the bills, I get it). For a podcast supposedly about horror, why am I being forced to suffer the intricate relationships of the single most bland characters in existence. Even Jon, the avatar of an eldritch God was somehow sidelined in his own relationship with the human equivalent of a sugar-free marshmallow. Christ I'm queer and I actually began to contract homophobia from the ridiculous character arcs of the final season. Back on topic- I immensely enjoyed the first three seasons and do recommend this podcast, but if you find yourself bored by the character dialogue and non- statement content, the final season might not be for you. If you find yourself hanging in there after 100+ episodes thinking "maybe it picks back up, maybe it's worth it"- it's not. Finish early while you're still having fun. Definitely try it though!!
I binged all the episodes in a relatively short space of time. This is truly a work of writing and production genius. Although I enjoyed the dialogue between the characters a bit more than monologue stories, I still found them compelling as well, especially since they all gradually piece together, like a puzzle. The acting is great too. Parts of the story were particularly moving - especially when describing one of the fears - the Lonely. Made me cry. I hope they return with follow-up episode of sorts.
Look, I can't say much about this show that hasn't already been said by people who are far cleverer and more genre-savvy than I am. If you know anything about audio drama, you've surely heard , well, pretty much everyone rave about the meta-plot, the characters, and the sound design. I don't have much more to add, but I can say that listening to The Magnus Archives is one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had. My heart is in my mouth every week. This is hands-down the most effective horror writing I've ever listened to (or read).
The best horror podcast. Love it so much. I'm scared that one day it will end and we'll have none left 💖
ONE OF THE SCARIEST SHOWS AROUND!
Truely wonderful listening experience. The writing is interesting, gripping and creative. The voice acting is so good it puts you in a trance.
I mainlined this show in three days, barely sleeping or communicating with the outside world, such was its thrall. The standalone stories are enthralling, and the framing story is so much of what I want in a podcast: deeply accessible characters, beautiful writing, and very good dark jokes.
I love this take on podcasts and story telling. It makes me feel like I'm somehow transported back in time to when radio stations used to have a weekly story for listeners to tune in to. Definitely pulls you in
Spectacular! This series is absolutely enrapturing, spine-tingling, and it sets my mind going about possibilities.
The first podcast I ever listened to and my very favourite, over a year after discovering the medium. The writing is captivating, the characters real enough they'll feel like friends, and the plot has some of the best twists and turns I've ever heard. Definitely worth a listen, be it a few choice episodes or the entire show.
Absolutely amazing podcast, so incredibly addictive! I listened to 200 episodes in 13 days, (get your daily 6.5 hours of horror here, folks!) and now I'm listening to the fabulous sequel, the Magnus Protocol. This podcast draws you in, keeps you wanting more and more, because you simply must know what is lurking in that dark alleyway...
