All right, So last night the Columbus Blue Jackets eliminated

0:04

from the playoffs. It took eighty one games. And by

0:08

the way, this is a team that the pundits at

0:11

the beginning of this season had in the last five

0:15

spots come this time this year for this season. Well,

0:19

clearly that was not the case. And so the final

0:22

game of the season is tonight at nature Wide Arena

0:25

versus the Islanders, and as of yesterday that game for

0:29

tonight was sold out. So I exchanged one text with

0:35

the radio voice for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Bob mcgalligan

0:38

last night, and it was after Montreal slammed the door

0:43

and they won four two and overtime, not overtime in regulation,

0:47

good lord. And so yeah, I ended up finding the

0:51

game on at like, I don't know, halfway through the

0:56

second period, so I was watching it. It was tied

0:59

for quite a while and so on. So let's bring

1:02

him in the radio voice for the Columbus Blue Jackets,

1:04

Bob mcgelligan, and h Bob, welcome to the show. Your

1:07

thoughts on.

1:08

Everything had disappointing my thoughts on everything. Yeah, and this

1:14

is what happens when you don't control your own destiny,

1:17

and you have to rely on other people in any

1:19

facet of life. Don't ever rely upon other people. You

1:21

can't do it yourself. Screw them or they'll screw you.

1:25

Yeah, that's pretty accurate, I think. I mean a lot

1:28

of people now are going, Man, we always say this,

1:32

and it seems like it's true and well a lot

1:34

of sports, but especially in hockey, you know one or

1:37

two games, you know, they win one or two games

1:42

along the way, and this is a different outcome given

1:45

everything plays out the way that it just played out. So, man,

1:50

missed it by that much, as they say, I mean,

1:53

so dagon close and correct me if I'm wrong here.

1:57

But was it if the Jackets would have pulled this off,

2:01

If Montreal would have lost last night and then the

2:04

Jackets would have won tonight and they went on into

2:06

the playoffs, it would have been the first time in

2:08

NHL history to come back from what was it like,

2:12

down ten points or twelve point something like that.

2:15

Yeah, yeah, it would have been the first time to

2:18

erase the deficit that they were in, or for Montreal

2:22

to for a team to blow up lead with the

2:25

six point leader with three games left or something like that. Yeah.

2:28

Yeah, you know, when you since you've had a night

2:31

to sleep on it, do you feel any better today

2:34

than you did last night?

2:35

I can tell you the answer to that is no. I can hear that. He's Bob. I'm feeling real.

2:41

I had the opportunity to go to work today the

2:44

face what is arguably would have been arguably the biggest

2:48

game in the history of this franchise in twenty five years. Instead,

2:51

I'm going to watch the Blue Jackets play the Islanders

2:56

and then it's over for six months. So no, I

2:59

don't feel any better about it. I'm you know, there's

3:02

not that I could have done to change it. But you know that's frustrating in its own right. But it's no,

3:07

I don't Why would I feel good.

3:08

About it today?

3:09

Oh I didn't say you feel good? I just said you know better than you did last night?

3:13

And you know no, well, yeah, last night I was

3:16

screaming expletives and shutting television off with every Montreal goal.

3:20

So yeah, I guess better than that.

3:22

Yeah, I still hope it's packed in there tomorrow night.

3:24

I mean you know this, Yeah, today it was. It

3:27

was a disappointing conclusion, but I'm proud of that. I'm

3:30

proud of them forgetting this close. I wish there was

3:33

one more.

3:33

Well, that's where I was going. That's where I was going with him. I was going to say, you know,

3:38

is it too soon? And I know management and the

3:41

players and all of that, I don't know. You know

3:43

these guys so well, Bob that do they are there?

3:47

Moral victories for some yes, for some no? And I

3:50

don't know who's who with regard to any kind of

3:53

victories or the positivity that you take away from this.

3:56

But I think the farther we get from the ending

3:59

this eighty seven second game tonight and then we have

4:02

some time time heals all wounds, as they say. But

4:05

I think what will happen is a lot of positives

4:09

will be taken from this season. There's no question about that,

4:12

because there's a lot to pull away from this. Just

4:15

off the top of my head, and you know, I have a small brain. The Stadium series this year was

4:21

historic for the Jackets, and then to do what they

4:23

did as far as you know, beating Detroit like that

4:26

twice and you know there and then here, I mean

4:28

just stuff like that if you can do and then

4:31

I don't know, it's too early to start talking about

4:33

who's gonna be back and who's this and who's that.

4:36

I just feel like the future is bright for the

4:38

Jackets right now, and I love what Dean Evison coach

4:41

Everson has done with regard to the the locker room

4:46

and everything that the Jackets are Now.

4:52

It'll get better, Yeah, it'll be better tomorrow. Yes, there's

4:56

lessons that have been learned, and this is going to

4:58

go a long way and that stuff. There's no question

5:01

about that. I mean, this is this is an experience

5:03

they had to go through. It just I think just

5:07

it hurts so much ago to the last day, you know,

5:10

a week or so ago, when we were talking and

5:12

they were dead in the water, I was ready. I'm like,

5:15

you know what I told Zach Wrenski, I said, you

5:17

know what, it's been a great season. I love watching

5:20

you guys. It just sucks at it's ending this way where now you just have totally fallen apart, and he goes, yeah,

5:25

I agree with you, and then they get back in it.

5:27

So you know, it's that's what's hard because you're right there,

5:31

You're right there to the very end. And and what's

5:34

even worse than that, I think if they get in

5:37

they make noise. And I know Montreal feels that way too.

5:41

I don't. I don't feel that way about Montreal. I think Washington beats them, but I think the Blue Jackets

5:45

could have taken the capitals. So he you know, but

5:49

who knows, and we'll never know. But it's just yeah,

5:51

it's the raw motion of the day, and it'll things

5:54

will change, and tomorrow they'll have their exit interviews and

5:56

Don Woodell will talk and Dan Everson will talk, and

5:58

they will talk about all of those things that you

6:01

just said about going in the right direction and having

6:04

the right personnel and needing to get more personnel and

6:06

blah blah blah blah blah. But that's tomorrow. This is today,

6:09

and today stinks.

6:10

Yeah, Bob, Bob, what do you do with yourself for

6:12

the next six months?

6:13

Now?

6:14

I mean you won't be you won't be on doing

6:16

your games. What what occupies your life when you're not

6:19

doing the Blue Jacket stuff?

6:20

I hibernate for six months.

6:23

Really, did you see Vince Vaughn in Wedding and Wedding Crashers?

6:27

That's he's Vince vaugh He's eating cereal in a robe

6:31

like no, shall oh, whoops, that was Will Ferrell. Sorry,

6:38

that's it. Sorry, whoops, I screwed it up. But you

6:40

know what, you get the.

6:41

Gest what I was just trying to get. I look

6:43

forward to his next six months of doing something that

6:45

maybe makes him happy, that he just enjoys doing. So

6:48

I feel I'm I'm being sincere with you. I feel

6:52

bad for you right now because I hear the disappointment

6:54

in your voice, and you're such a lively guy and

6:57

I've enjoyed listening to what you do, and it just it makes me feel bad that you're so down about this.

7:03

Well, I'll be at Huntington Park soon Collum baseball at

7:06

a much slower pace than than I'm used to going so.

7:12

And I laughed, because slower paces, that's generous. I mean,

7:16

it's just like compared to what you do, You're gonna

7:19

have to probably have an ivy of coffee, you know,

7:22

to stay with it, man, because now.

7:25

That is much.

7:28

I literally one time when I was in Syracuse, we

7:31

were playing a series against the Wolkesbury's Grant and Penguins,

7:34

and it was Game five. It was a deciding game, and I knew that we might you know, you could

7:38

possibly lose that game. And either way, there was no

7:42

game the next day, and I was doing baseball as

7:46

well at the time, so this is when they were crossing over. But I rode the bus with the hockey

7:50

team to Wilkesbury because I was afraid if we lose

7:52

that game, it'll be the last go around with the boys,

7:55

and you want that one last trip home. And unfortunately

7:57

that's what happened. We lost, and I drove all the way,

8:00

rode the bus all the way back home. Was back

8:02

at the baseball stadium the next morning at eight o'clock

8:05

to get on a bus and go to Scranton, which is like fifteen minutes from Wooksburg. So and h and

8:10

I remember our head coach, carry Agnew at the time

8:14

called me or sent me a text or I don't

8:16

know how much were you texting back then, I'm not sure, but either way the message was not the same as

8:21

you are now. Do you go from doing hockey last

8:24

night to doing this? Here comes a three to one pitch?

8:28

Yet? All for so, I never heard you do the

8:32

Clippers games, but I'm telling you, I've got a picture of Bob Youuger in my mind right now. Now he

8:37

just he's that. That's the the image that you have

8:40

created just from the time I've had a chance to.

8:42

Talk to you. You know what, Chuck, it's kind of

8:45

relaxing to go over there because it's you know, I

8:48

work with Ryan Mitchell, who's a good friend, and I like a lot, and I get to be the number

8:52

two guy. I don't have to be the lead guy.

8:54

And you know, I'm like you working with Blazer. That's

8:57

got to be maddening for you, but for me, it

9:00

ye jacket, but uh yeah, I'll do that. There'll be

9:04

blue jacket stuf throughout the course of the summer.

9:06

And do you do you do you have any migelegate

9:10

for the Clippers like flap tacks on affairs or kJ

9:13

all day.

9:14

Do you have any of those for the c on

9:17

the home run baby?

9:17

Okay, yeah, that's pretty much it. I don't know, it

9:21

all depends what you're feeling or whatever.

9:24

I mean.

9:24

I mean, Juan Brito's back this year playing second base.

9:27

I like when he hits home runs if it's Miami because I can say going going wan you know.

9:32

Okay, all right, what's going on? I got you one?

9:37

Uh one last thing about tonight and the Jackets in

9:41

the eighty second game and the final one and it's

9:43

home ice and all that. Do the gut because this,

9:46

to me would be and and you might be completely

9:49

obos in the way you think of this. It feels to me like this would be the hardest for them

9:53

to go out and leave it all on the ice tonight. But do they make an e is it an exclamation point?

9:58

And do they send the Island packing with a loss?

10:01

And you know, I mean, are there thoughts of are

10:04

there conversations about you know, for Johnny and I don't

10:07

know any of that stuff.

10:10

No, it's going to be a it's gonna be a

10:12

regular game. They're going to go out and try to win. I know that they know the building is going to

10:15

be packed tonight and they want to have a good showing in front of the home fans one more time.

10:20

The Islanders are notoriously horrible team to watch. They're terrible,

10:25

boring the way they play, which is always a it's

10:29

it's always a challenge to play against them. And they're

10:32

still going to be picked off about what happened last

10:34

time that the team's played, where that goaltender interference call

10:38

took away the goal in the third period with nine seconds left, which had that, had that remained the Blue Jackets,

10:44

we would I would see it's ticking off today. I would have been over this three days ago.

10:49

If if I remember right, Elvis took a stick to

10:51

the face earlier in that game, which basically somewhere like

10:55

actually estimating that that might be why there was kind

10:59

of a a.

10:59

Lot player took a stick in the face and was broken open and should have been a four minute power

11:03

play from Montreal last night, but it wasn't too so

11:05

we could have this conversation all day.

11:06

Well, no, that's what I'm saying, Like the Islanders can

11:09

just they can put that in their pipe and smoke it.

11:11

Yeah, well they're just again, that's just the way they play.

11:14

Look Patrick Laws, their head coach. He's not gonna want

11:16

to lose tonight the last game. But there I hate

11:20

the Islanders. I just hate the way they play. It's

11:23

so boring. It'll get me ready for baseball.

11:25

Actually it'll slowly right down. Well, uh, we'll have a

11:31

good have a good game tonight, man final one. Leave

11:35

it all on the mic, as they say, or I

11:37

don't know if they say that.

11:38

Because then somebody's going to clean that up.

11:40

Now, we got to go to Clippers games to annoy

11:42

him sometimes.

11:45

Look, there's there's not enough high price club seating there

11:48

for Lazers.

11:49

Yeah, oh, would you knock it off with that? I'm

11:53

I know what's No, we're going to end up up

11:55

there with him. Watch, we'll go up. We'll go up

11:57

and hang with him up there. He knows, he knows

12:00

everybody there's security. I don't stand a chance.

12:03

I'm just telling you, no, we'll see, we'll see Bob

12:08

a lot. He's going to be around.

12:09

I'm a bugg him. He's gonna have to come and hang with us here in the studio just for no

12:13

reason whatsoever, just to come in and and shenanigans, because

12:17

that's what he's good at.

12:18

So are you going to I am not.

12:20

I was unable to land tickets.

12:22

Do you have any non? God damn all right.

12:26

I came to the game to the manager of the Louisville Bats. Okay, so there you go there.

12:33

That's good though, That's as good as any I suppose.

12:35

But we'll be we'll be listening and watching man tonight

12:39

for sure.

12:40

Everybody.

12:40

Bob mcgalligan, who is the radio voice for the Columbis

12:43

Blue Jackets. Thanks Bob, appreciate you man. Fantastic season, Thanks.

12:46

Brother, Thanks all right, all right, there he goes.

12:50

All right.
