0:06
glowing golden orb in the black sky.
0:10
See how it shines on the dark back
0:12
roads of America, and on one road in
0:17
particular. Come with us, and we'll take a walk
0:23
down the moonlit road, for the night is
0:26
waiting. And the moon is full.
0:43
Deep in the hot steamy backwoods of Lost
0:46
Creek, Louisiana, there once lived two young boys
0:50
named Tom and Clay. They were the best of friends.
0:53
So much so that they each made a
0:56
solemn promise to be the best man at
0:59
the other's wedding when they grew up. They cut open the palms of their hands
1:03
with their hunting knives and shook hands on
1:05
it, sealing their promise in blood.
1:09
As they got older, the two friends became
1:11
very different men. Tom was a soft-spoken, humble fellow who
1:15
was quite content working his family's small livestock
1:19
ranch. But Clay was a hothead who frequented the
1:23
local taverns most every night.
1:25
That temper of yours is going to get you in trouble one day, Tom constantly warned
1:29
his friend. And sure enough, his warning came true.
1:33
Clay got in a barroom brawl one night
1:35
over a gambling debt and was promptly shot
1:38
dead. Tom spent many months grieving for Clay and
1:45
visited his grave each week at a tiny
1:48
local cemetery a few miles on the outside
1:51
of town. But Tom knew he eventually had to get
1:54
on with his life, so he did.
1:57
A year later, he met a young woman named Isabel, whose family had just moved into
2:01
the area. After a six-month courtship, the two decided
2:06
to get married. It was then that Tom remembered the promise
2:10
he'd made to Clay when they were kids.
2:12
Since Clay was dead, he obviously couldn't be
2:15
the best man. But Tom felt he should show some respect
2:19
for their friendship and at least ask him,
2:22
no matter if he was alive or dead.
2:25
Besides, Tom was a kind of a superstitious
2:28
fellow. And he figured with a temper like Clay
2:31
had, he just might come back as a
2:33
ghost and make his life miserable if he
2:35
didn't. So one night, Tom walked the long, dusty
2:40
road to Lost Creek Cemetery, lantern in hand.
2:44
He opened up the rusty cemetery gate with
2:46
a loud creak. He walked past the crumbling tombstones to Clay's
2:52
barren grave. He took a deep breath and told Clay
2:56
about his wedding plans. Remember that promise we made when we were
3:02
kids? Tom asked. Well, it'd be great if you could be
3:05
my best man, but since you're dead and
3:07
all... Before Tom could finish this sentence, he felt
3:11
the ground start to shake beneath his feet.
3:14
It got louder and louder, and lightning crashed
3:17
across the sky. A giant sinkhole opened up where Clay's grave
3:23
used to be. Then Tom's blood ran cold when he saw
3:27
Clay's corpse rise slowly up out of the
3:31
earth. A big grin on his face, looking no
3:34
different than the day they'd buried him. By the time you came around here and
3:38
asked me, Clay said, I thought you'd never
3:41
make it. Tom could barely speak.
3:43
But you've been dead all this time.
3:47
How come you don't look any different? They don't let folks in heaven who've made
3:51
promises they don't keep, Clay answered.
3:54
So I've been lying here this whole time,
3:56
and I'd be much obliged if you'd let me keep my promise...
4:00
and be the best man at your wedding. Well, Tom figured he had no choice but
4:04
to help his friend out, so he brought
4:06
him back to town. Needless to say, the townspeople were quite scared
4:11
when Clay, who they'd just put in the
4:14
ground not more than a year ago, came
4:16
back looking no worse for wear. But once they saw he was the same
4:21
old Clay, they gradually started to accept him
4:24
again, even if he was dead.
4:28
Tom's wedding day finally came, and there was
4:30
quite a party at the local dance hall afterwards.
4:33
Local fiddlers kept the guests dancing until the
4:35
wee hours of the morning. Much beer and Cajun sausage was consumed by
4:40
all. And as the party wound down, and Tom
4:44
enjoyed another slow waltz with his new bride,
4:47
he felt Clay tap him on the shoulder.
4:51
It's time for me to go, said Clay.
4:54
Could you walk me back to the graveyard? That way we can say goodbye, for good
4:59
this time. Tom noticed that Clay had a new look
5:03
on his face. A peaceful, content look he'd never seen before.
5:08
Tom looked at his bride, who nodded her
5:11
approval with a smile and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
5:14
I'll be right back, I promise, Tom said
5:17
to Isabel. Tom walked with Clay down the cemetery road.
5:22
They walked in silence most of the time,
5:25
Clay looking up at the bright stars with a grin on his face.
5:28
When they reached that rusted cemetery gate, Clay
5:32
opened it wide with a loud creak.
5:36
But this time, there weren't any old, crumbling
5:39
tombstones on the other side. Instead, Tom's jaw dropped as he saw a
5:45
sparkling, gold path leading to a beautiful forest
5:49
of multicolored fruit trees.
5:51
Songbirds sang the most beautiful songs Tom had
5:54
ever heard. Is this heaven? Tom asked his friend.
5:58
Must be, Clay answered, but you can't go
6:00
there. It ain't your time. Besides, you have a new bride waiting for
6:05
you back in town. Tom knew he had to get back, but
6:09
he couldn't tear his eyes away from the beauty on the other side of the gate.
6:13
Let me walk with you a bit, Tom said.
6:16
I gotta see what it's like. I'll turn back in a few minutes, I
6:20
swear. Well, Clay figured he owed his friend a
6:23
favor, so he held the gate open for
6:25
Tom to follow. And as they strolled through the beautiful forest,
6:30
meadows, and beaches of heaven, Tom thought it
6:33
was a thousand times more beautiful than the
6:35
local preacher had said it would be.
6:39
Tears streamed from his eyes at the beauty
6:41
of the place. It was then that Tom looked at his
6:44
watch. He was shocked to see that hours had
6:47
passed since he left Isabelle back at the
6:50
dance hall. It had only seemed like a few minutes.
6:54
He desperately wanted to keep walking, but with
6:58
every ounce of willpower he had, he tapped
7:01
Clay on the shoulder and told him it
7:04
was time for him to go. All right then, said Clay with a smile.
7:08
Maybe I'll see you again one day. And with those words, the glorious world around
7:13
them vanished, and Tom found himself back in
7:16
the dark cemetery. He couldn't wait to get back to town
7:19
and tell Isabelle what awaited them on the
7:21
other side. But as he walked through the graveyard, he
7:26
noticed that something was strange. The tiny old cemetery was now filled with
7:31
new graves, huge monuments, and mausoleums.
7:36
Tom ran down the long cemetery road back
7:40
towards town, but stumbled across a strange city
7:44
he'd never seen before. Large buildings of glass and steel towered overhead.
7:50
The townspeople were dressed in odd garments, staring
7:54
at Tom like he was some sort of strange creature.
7:57
Tom figured he was disoriented and must have
8:00
taken the wrong road back home.
8:02
Where am I? he asked the passersby.
8:06
You're in Lost Creek, they answered with a
8:09
chuckle. What's wrong? You drunk or something?
8:12
Tom started to get scared. He asked around for Isabelle, but no one
8:18
had heard of her. He tried to find the dance hall, and
8:22
no one had heard of it. He went to every church he could find,
8:27
banging on the door to find his pastor.
8:30
But he was nowhere to be found. Finally, a sympathetic elderly pastor let Tom into
8:37
his office. Tom frantically told him the story of his
8:40
wedding and how he walked his friend Clay
8:43
back to the graveyard. Now he couldn't find Isabelle or the pastor
8:47
who had married them. The old man laughed and shook his head.
8:52
Come on, son. It isn't Halloween yet.
8:55
Besides, I've heard that old ghost story a
8:57
million times. What are you talking about?
9:00
said Tom. The pastor lit his pipe, then told Tom
9:04
the old tale of the bridegroom who disappeared
9:07
on his wedding night. It was said that the bridegroom walked back
9:11
to the cemetery with his dead friend and
9:14
was never seen again. The bride was so grief-stricken that she
9:18
fell ill and died. That's not possible!
9:23
Tom blurted out. The pastor sighed and grabbed a large dusty
9:27
book from the top of his bookshelf.
9:30
He flipped back the yellowing pages and said,
9:33
I'm not saying it's a true story, but
9:36
I happen to have the old church records from back then.
9:39
He found a wedding ledger and pointed out
9:42
two names to Tom. See, here they are, married 150 years ago
9:47
this night. Tom looked where he was pointing and froze.
9:52
The names were his and Isabelle's.
9:57
So like clay before him, poor old Tom
9:59
had made a promise he didn't keep. For Tom promised he'd be back for his
10:04
bride and never returned. But Tom never believed he'd really been away
10:09
for 150 years. In fact, they say that Tom's ghost still
10:14
haunts the old section of the cemetery in
10:17
Lost Creek, Louisiana, stranded outside the gates of
10:21
heaven. And if you should go there and hear
10:24
him ask you to help find his bride,
10:28
turn around and walk away, because you might
10:32
not ever come back. That concludes this tale from The Moonlit Road.
