3:05
a new installment in
3:07
the Manson saga. The
3:10
final one, actually. Last
3:12

3:19
Tonight, we continue to

And finally... tie the

4:53
The Manson murders have an
4:56
order of finality. In 2016,
4:58
British newspaper The Guardian marveled
5:01
at how they compel the
5:03
public, despite what the journalist
5:05
called a lack of any
5:08
meaty mystery. This shows, yet
5:10
again, this podcast's point about
5:13
how the mainstream media has
5:15
been complicit in covering up
5:18
the complexities of the Manson
5:20
case. In no way do
5:23
we know with certainty who
5:25
did what when and how.
5:27
As you know, dear listener,
5:30
I despise idle speculation. And
5:32
this case is no different.
5:35
The problem is that so
5:37
much of the evidence is
5:40
still, and heaven knows why,
5:42
being kept confidential by the
5:45
US authorities. To me, your
5:47
humble host, it appears quite
5:50
clear. that Charles Manson had
5:52
ties, perhaps lose once, to
5:54
US security services such as
5:57
the CIA and the F.
5:59
FBI through programs such as
6:02
Cointle Pro, Chaos and MK
6:04
Ultra. Now the evidence, such
6:07
as it is, points pretty
6:09
clearly at Charles Tex Watson,
6:12
Susan Atkins, and Patricia Kernwinkle
6:14
as murderers of Sharon Tate
6:17
and her friends on Ciello
6:19
Drive. But the evidence does
6:21
not at all conclude that
6:24
they did so at the
6:26
direct behest. of Charles Manson.
6:29
He himself adamantly denied it,
6:31
and the killers themselves changed
6:34
their story so many times
6:36
that we will probably never
6:39
learn the truth. One key
6:41
enigma is the text Watson
6:43
tapes. Less than two weeks
6:46
before the family's capture in
6:48
the desert, Watson absconded to
6:51
his parents' place in Copewell,
6:53
Texas. On the 30th of
6:56
November, 1969, he turned himself
6:58
in for questioning after learning
7:01
that two LAPD detectives were
7:03
on a plane heading his
7:06
way. He got a lawyer,
7:08
Bill Boyd, of Dallas, who
7:10
sat him down to make
7:13
a taped confession. This is,
7:15
as far as anyone knows,
7:18
the first known recorded account
7:20
of the crimes. Before Bugliosi
7:23
or anyone else, could impose
7:25
narrative order on it. It's
7:28
all the more valuable because
7:30
Watson hadn't even been identified
7:33
as a suspect yet. He
7:35
was speaking of his own
7:37
accord to his lawyer, not
7:40
as a man defending himself
7:42
to the police. According to
7:45
Boyd, Watson described the duration
7:47
of his time with the
7:50
family, and, in chilling detail,
7:52
the killing of Tate and
7:55
the other victims. He was
7:57
very straightforward. and candid about
7:59
his involvement in the crimes.
8:02
He also described other murders
8:04
that the group committed, murders
8:07
that hadn't been discovered. The
8:09
DA's office and the LAPD
8:12
have released only minimal and
8:14
at times contradictory statements about
8:17
content on recording tapes. Recently,
8:19
the DA's office trotted out
8:22
a different reason for not
8:24
releasing them, and I quote,
8:26
There are unsolved crimes. Manson
8:29
family members are suspected of
8:31
committing. The information in the
8:34
tapes are part of the
8:36
investigation of those crimes and
8:39
could be used to solve
8:41
them." It is quite appalling
8:44
that they give this statement
8:46
over 40 years after the
8:48
Manson family murders. The tapes
8:51
with Tex Watson's initial statements
8:53
have been available to law
8:56
enforcement all these years. And
8:58
now, when there are certain
9:01
media interests in their content,
9:03
they are withheld due to
9:06
a supposed ongoing investigation. The
9:08
whole thing smells to high
9:11
heaven. When we delve into
9:13
the dark saga of the
9:15
Manson family, the names sharantate.
9:18
Leno and Rosemary La Bianca
9:20
often dominate the narrative. Yet
9:23
the shadow cast by Charles
9:25
Manson and his followers extends
9:28
into numerous other grim chapters,
9:30
each involving real people with
9:33
lives, dreams and stories that
9:35
were cut short. Let's take
9:38
a closer look at these
9:40
lesser-known victims, their lives, and
9:42
the circumstances surrounding their tragic
9:45
ends. Donald
9:47
Jerome Shea, born on
9:49
the 18th of September,
9:51
1933 in Massachusetts, was
9:53
a stuntman and actor
9:55
who worked on numerous
9:57
Hollywood. with productions he
10:00
might report their activities,
10:02
led to his murder.
10:04
He was well-liked at
10:06
Sparn Ranch, where he
10:08
worked as a ranch
10:10
hand, maintaining the property
10:12
where the Manson family
10:14
had taken residence. Shea's
10:16
familiarity with the cult
10:18
members, combined with suspicions
10:20
he might report their
10:23
activities, led to his
10:25
murder. In late August,
10:27
ordered his killing, which
10:29
was carried out by
10:31
Bruce Davis and Steve
10:33
Clem Grogan. Shea was
10:35
stabbed, beaten, and his
10:37
body dismembered, buried in
10:39
a shallow grave at
10:41
ranch. His remains were
10:44
only discovered in 1977,
10:46
after Grogan confessed in
10:48
hopes of a parole.

13:29
Gerwetsen, born in 1948 in
13:31
Estonia, moved to Canada before
13:34
making her way to California,
13:36
known as Jane Doe 59,
13:38
when her body was discovered
13:40
on the 16th of November,
13:43
1969, on Mulholland Drive, Gerwetsen
13:45
had been stabbed multiple times.
13:47
Her life was one of
13:50
travel, and perhaps the search
13:52
for opportunity in the new
13:54
world. The brutality of her
13:57
murder in close proximity. to
13:59
known Manson family activities led
14:01
to speculation of a connection.
14:04
Theories suggest she might have
14:06
witnessed something she shouldn't have,
14:08
or crossed paths with the
14:11
wrong people at a time
14:13
when the Manson family was
14:15
still active and lethal. Beyond
14:17
these, there are whispers around
14:20
other figures like Joe Pew,
14:22
connected to the family through
14:24
his wife, Sandra Good. Pugh
14:27
found dead in London under
14:29
suspicious circumstances leaves us questioning
14:31
the reach of Manson's influence.
14:34
Similarly, Ronald Hughes, born in
14:36
1936, was a young lawyer
14:38
representing Manson during his trial.
14:41
His disappearance and subsequent death
14:43
by drowning in a remote
14:45
area of California during a
14:47
court recess in November 1970.
14:50
Stars' speculation about whether his
14:52
death was accidental or orchestrated
14:54
to silence a potential threat
14:57
or weak link in Manson's
14:59
defense. On the day the
15:01
verdicts recommending the death penalty
15:04
were returned, news came that
15:06
the badly decomposed body of
15:08
Ronald Hughes had been found
15:11
wedged between two boulders in
15:13
Ventura County. It was rumoured,
15:15
although never proven. that Hughes
15:18
was murdered by the family,
15:20
possibly because he had stood
15:22
up to Manson and refused
15:24
to allow Van Houghton to
15:27
take the stand and absolve
15:29
Manson of the crimes. Though
15:31
he might have perished in
15:34
flooding, family member Sandra Goodes
15:36
stated that Hughes was the
15:38
first of the retaliation murders.
15:41
On the 8th of November,
15:43
1972, The body of 26-year-old
15:45
Vietnam Marine combat veteran James
15:48
L.T. Willett was found by
15:50
a hiker near Gurnevillek. California.
15:52
Months earlier, he had been
15:54
forced to dig his own
15:57
grave and then was shot
15:59
and poorly buried. His body
16:01
was found with the one
16:04
hand protruding from the grave
16:06
and the head and other
16:08
hand missing, likely because of
16:11
scavenging animals. His station wagon
16:13
was found outside a house
16:15
in Stockton, where several Manson
16:18
followers were living. including Priscilla
16:20
Cooper, Lynette Squaky From, and
16:22
Nancy Pittman. Police forced their
16:24
way into the house and
16:27
arrested several of the people
16:29
there, along with From, who
16:31
called the house after they
16:34
had arrived. The body of
16:36
James Willett's 19-year-old wife, Lauren
16:38
Rennie Chaval Olmsted Willett, was
16:41
found buried in the basement.
16:43
She had been killed very
16:45
recently by a gunshot to
16:48
the head. in what the
16:50
family members initially claimed was
16:52
an accident. It was later
16:55
suggested that she was killed
16:57
out of fear that she
16:59
would reveal who killed her
17:01
husband, as the discovery of
17:04
his body had become prominent
17:06
news. The Willett's infant daughter
17:08
was found alive in the
17:11
house. Michael Montfort pled guilty
17:13
to murdering Rennie Willett and
17:15
Patricia Cooper, James Craig. and
17:18
Nancy Whitman pled guilty as
17:20
accessories after the fact. Montfort
17:22
and William Goucher later pled
17:25
guilty to the murder of
17:27
James Willett, and James Craig
17:29
pled guilty as an accessory
17:31
after the fact. The group
17:34
had been living in the
17:36
house with Willets while committing
17:38
various robberies. Shortly after killing
17:41
Willett, Montfort had used Willets'
17:43
identification papers. to pose as
17:45
Willett after being arrested in
17:48
an armed robbery of a
17:50
liquor store. News reports suggested
17:52
that James Willett was not
17:55
involved in the robberies and
17:57
wanted to move away and
17:59
was killed out of fair
18:01
that he would talk to
18:04
police. After leaving the Marines,
18:06
following two tours in Vietnam,
18:08
will it have been an
18:11
ESL teacher for immigrant children.
18:13
Each of these individuals had
18:15
lives filled with aspirations, personal
18:18
histories, and dreams that were
18:20
forever altered by their encounters
18:22
with the Manson family. Protracted
18:27
proceedings to extradite Watson
18:29
from his native Texas,
18:31
where he had resettled
18:33
a month before his
18:35
arrest, resulted in his
18:37
being tried separately. The
18:39
trial commenced in August
18:41
1971. By October, he
18:43
too had been found
18:45
guilty on seven counts
18:47
of murder and one
18:49
of conspiracy. Unlike the
18:51
others, Watson had presented
18:53
a psychiatric defense. Prosecutor
18:55
Vincent Bugliose. made short
18:57
work of Watson's insanity
18:59
claims. Like his co-conspirators,
19:01
Watson was sentenced to
19:03
death. As with Manson,
19:05
his sentence was eventually
19:07
commuted to life in
19:09
prison. While behind bars,
19:11
Tex Watson has tried
19:13
to change his image
19:15
quite dramatically. From the
19:17
ultimate bad boy killer
19:19
hippie to one of
19:21
being a clean-cut all-American
19:23
born-again-again Christian. Tex
19:26
Watson's prison ministry, known
19:28
as Abounding Love Ministries,
19:30
has been one of
19:32
the more controversial and
19:35
debated aspects of his
19:37
life post-conviction. Watson founded
19:39
Abounding Love Ministries in
19:41
1980, while incarcerated at
19:43
the California Men's Colony.
19:45
The primary aim of
19:47
the ministry is to
19:49
spread Christian teachings among
19:52
inmates, offering spiritual guidance.
19:54
and helping prisoners find
19:56
redemption through faith. Watson
19:58
believes in the power
20:00
of transformation through Christianity,
20:02
drawing from his own
20:04
experience of conversion in
20:07
1975. Watson has led
20:09
Bible study groups, preached
20:11
sermons, and conducted baptisms
20:13
within the prison system.
20:15
His ministry seeks to
20:17
connect Christian prisoners with
20:19
believers on the outside
20:22
for support, pen pal
20:24
correspondence, and spiritual mentorship.
20:26
The ministry produces various
20:28
publications, like newsletters, books
20:30
written by Watson, and
20:32
audio recordings of his
20:34
sermons. Notable among these
20:37
are the book, Will
20:39
You Die For Me,
20:41
its autobiography, detailing his
20:43
life before, during, and
20:45
after his crimes, and
20:47
subsequent spiritual journey. And
20:49
the leaflet Charles Watson
20:52
speaks out, where he
20:54
discusses his faith and
20:56
ministry. Abounding
20:58
Love Ministries maintains a website
21:00
where visitors can find resources,
21:03
read Watson's writings, listen to
21:05
his sermons and learn about
21:08
the ministry's work. It's a
21:10
platform for outreach, allowing Watson
21:12
to connect with a broader
21:15
audience beyond prison walls. There
21:17
have been accusations in the
21:20
past that Watson used ministry
21:22
funds for personal benefits. Investigations
21:25
were conducted. but no conclusive
21:27
evidence of wrongdoing was found
21:29
that led to legal action.
21:32
At one point, Watson was
21:34
accused of abusing his position
21:37
as an assistant chaplain at
21:39
California Men's Colony to enforce
21:41
discipline against inmates who opposed
21:44
his teachings or methods, though
21:46
these claims also did not
21:49
result in formal charges. The
21:51
idea of a convicted murderer
21:53
running a ministry has been
21:56
a point of contention. Many
21:58
question whether Watson's ministry is
22:01
genuine. wine, repentance, or a
22:03
means to manipulate parole proceedings,
22:05
giving his multiple denied parole
22:08
hearings. Watson has garnered support
22:10
from some religious communities who
22:13
believe in the transformative power
22:15
of faith. Rosemary Labianca's daughter,
22:17
Suzanne Strudders, once supported his
22:20
ministry, believing in his change
22:22
of heart, though this support
22:25
was not unanimous among the
22:27
victims' among the victims' families.
22:31
There are testimonials from
22:33
inmates who claim Watson's ministry
22:35
as positively impacted their lives,
22:38
helping them find a path
22:40
to redemption or at
22:42
least a way to
22:44
cope with their incarceration
22:46
through faith. As of the
22:49
latest information, Tex Watson remains
22:51
actively involved in his
22:53
ministry from Richard J.
22:55
Donovan Correctional Facility in
22:57
San Diego, where he was
23:00
transferred in 2017. Despite his
23:02
ongoing imprisonment, he continues
23:04
to preach, write and
23:06
engage with his ministry's
23:08
work, maintaining that his life's
23:11
purpose now is to serve
23:13
God and help others
23:15
find faith. That being
23:17
said, Watson still has
23:19
a parole hearing coming up
23:22
in 2026. As of this
23:24
recording Leslie Van Houghton
23:26
is a free woman.
23:28
After serving over 50
23:30
years in prison, Leslie Van
23:33
Houghton was granted parole and
23:35
released on the 11th
23:37
of July, 2023. She
23:39
is now living in
23:41
a halfway house in California,
23:44
adjusting to life outside of
23:46
prison. I would not recommend
23:49
seeking her out. Patricia
23:51
Cranwinkle remains in prison
23:53
at the California Institution
23:55
for Women. Cranwinkle has been
23:57
denied parole multiple times. With
24:00
her most recent denial
24:02
in 2022, where Governor...
24:04
for Gavin Newsom, reversed
24:06
the parole board's decision. She
24:09
is California's longest-serving female prisoner.
24:11
Bobby Bozoleil is serving
24:13
a life sentence at
24:15
the California Medical Facility
24:17
in Vecchaville for the murder
24:20
of Gary Hinman. Despite parole
24:22
recommendations, his releases have
24:24
been blocked by previous
24:26
governors. Lynette Squaky From
24:28
was released on parole from
24:31
federal prison in August 2009,
24:33
after serving 34 years
24:35
for attempting to assassinate
24:37
President General Ford. She
24:39
reportedly lives in Marcy New
24:42
York and has expressed that
24:44
she still loves Manson.
24:46
Hopefully, her advanced age
24:48
hinders her from causing
24:50
additional mayhem. Susan
24:53
Atkins died of brain
24:55
cancer on the 24th
24:57
of September 2009 while
25:00
serving her life sentence.
25:02
Linda Kasabian, who was
25:04
granted immunity for her
25:06
testimony against Manson and
25:08
others, passed away on
25:10
the 21st of January
25:13
2019. She lived a
25:15
relatively quiet life after
25:17
the trials, avoiding the
25:19
spotlight. Steve
25:21
Clem Grogan was paroled in
25:24
1985, after serving 15 years
25:26
for the murder of Donald
25:29
Shortishay. She now lives in
25:31
the California Bay Area, reportedly
25:34
working as a musician. I
25:36
have not heard any of
25:39
his work, and intend not
25:41
to. Mari Brunner was convicted
25:44
for her role in the
25:46
Hinman murder, but received immunity
25:49
for her immunity for her
25:51
Brenner was later convicted of
25:54
robbery and served time. She
25:56
was paroled in 1977 and
25:59
has since lived a... private
26:01
life, hopefully, on the correct
26:04
side of the law. As
26:06
you probably know, Charles Manson
26:09
was never released, and although
26:11
the scope of his involvement
26:14
in the Tate-Labianca murders can
26:16
be debated, he was no
26:19
saint. In the 1980s, Manson
26:21
gave three notable interviews. The
26:24
first recorded at California Medical
26:26
Facility and erred on the
26:29
13th of June 1981, was
26:31
by Tom Snyder for NBC's
26:33
The Tomorrow Show. The second,
26:36
recorded at San Quentin Prison,
26:38
and aired on the 7th
26:41
of March, 1986, was by
26:43
Charlie Rose for CBS News
26:46
Nightwatch. It won the National
26:48
News Emmy Award for Best
26:51
Interview in 1987. The last,
26:53
with Geraldo Rivera in 1988,
26:56
was part of that journalist's
26:58
prime time special on Satanism.
27:01
At least as early as
27:03
the Snyder interview, Manson's forehead
27:06
bore a swanstaker in the
27:08
spot where the ex-carved during
27:11
his trial had been. In
27:13
1989, Nicholas Shrek conducted an
27:16
interview of Manson cutting the
27:18
interview up for material in
27:21
his documentary Charles Manson Superstar.
27:23
This was the first and
27:26
is considered one of the
27:28
most authoritative and comprehensive documentaries
27:31
on the subject. Shrek concluded
27:33
that a story behind the
27:36
murders was probably false and
27:38
that an admitted plan by
27:41
several of the women at
27:43
the ranch interviewed after the
27:46
trial was concluded. involving killing
27:48
the people at the Tate
27:51
home in order to free
27:53
Bobby Boseleil, as per an
27:56
attempt to copycat the murder
27:58
of Gary Hindman. According
28:01
to this, the use of
28:03
writings of blood on the
28:05
walls at the Tate and
28:07
Labianca residences was merely a
28:09
ploy to make it seem
28:11
that a murderer of Hindman
28:13
was still free and that
28:15
Posa Lail was not guilty.
28:17
Key in his refutation of
28:19
the hypotheses was the fact
28:22
that while the prosecution attempted
28:24
to show Manson ordered the
28:26
killings because he was upset
28:28
over Terry Melcher, and believed
28:30
Melcher to still be at
28:32
that address, this could certainly
28:34
not have been the case,
28:36
as Manson attempted on several
28:38
occasions to contact Melcher at
28:40
his new address, showing he
28:42
knew very well Melcher no
28:45
longer lived at the Tate
28:47
home. Shrek also concluded that
28:49
Manson was not insane, but
28:51
merely acting that way, out
28:53
of frustration. On
28:55
the 25th of September
28:57
1984, while imprisoned at
28:59
the California Medical Facility
29:02
at Vacaville, Manson was
29:04
severely burned by a
29:06
fellow inmate who poured
29:08
paint thinner on him
29:10
and set him alight.
29:12
The other prisoner, Jan
29:14
Holmstrom, explained that Manson
29:16
had objected to his
29:18
Hara Krishna chance and
29:20
had verbally threatened him.
29:22
Despite suffering second and
29:24
third degree burns over
29:26
20% of his body,
29:28
Manson recovered from his
29:30
injuries. In January in
29:32
1996, a Manson website
29:34
was established by latter
29:36
day Manson follower George
29:38
Simpson, who was helped
29:40
by Sandra Good. Good
29:42
had been released from
29:44
prison in 1985, after
29:46
serving 10 years of
29:48
her 15 sentence for
29:50
the death threats. The
29:52
Manson website atwa.com was
29:54
discontinued in 2001. In
29:57
June 1997, Manson was
29:59
found to have been
30:01
trafficking in drugs by
30:03
a prison disciplinary committee.
30:05
That August, he was
30:07
moved from Corcoran State
30:09
Prison to Pelican Bay
30:11
State Prison. On the
30:13
5th of September 2007,
30:15
MS NBC aired The
30:17
Mind of Manson, a
30:19
complete version of a
30:21
1987 interview at California
30:23
San Quentin State Prison.
30:25
The footage. of the
30:27
unshackled, unapologic and unruly
30:29
mansion had been considered
30:31
so unbelievable that only
30:33
seven minutes of it
30:35
had originally been broadcast
30:37
on the Today Show
30:39
for which it had
30:41
been originally recorded. In
30:43
November 2009 a Los
30:45
Angeles DJ and songwriter
30:47
named Matthew Roberts released
30:49
correspondence and other evidence
30:52
indicating He had been
30:54
biologically fathered by Manson.
30:56
Robert's biological mother claims
30:58
to have been a
31:00
member of the Manson
31:02
family, who left in
31:04
the summer of 1967
31:06
after being raped by
31:08
Manson. The mother returned
31:10
to her parents' home
31:12
to complete the pregnancy,
31:14
gave birth on the
31:16
22nd of March 1968,
31:18
and subsequently gave up
31:20
Robert's for adoption. has
31:22
stated that he could
31:24
be the father, acknowledging
31:26
the biological mother and
31:28
a sexual relationship with
31:30
her during 1967. This
31:32
was nearly two years
31:34
before the family began
31:36
its murderous phase. In
31:38
2010, the Los Angeles
31:40
Times reported that Manson
31:42
was caught with a
31:44
cell phone in 2009
31:47
and had contacted people
31:49
in California, New Jersey,
31:51
New Jersey, Florida and
31:53
British Columbia in Canada.
31:55
A spokesperson for the
31:57
California Department. of corrections
31:59
stated that it was
32:01
not known if Manson
32:03
had used the phone
32:05
for criminal purposes. Manson
32:07
was known for numerous
32:09
infractions throughout his nearly
32:11
five decades in prison.
32:13
He accrued over 100
32:15
rules violations, which included
32:17
assault, possession of weapons,
32:19
threatening staff, possession of
32:21
contraband like cell phones,
32:23
and attempting to cause
32:25
chaos. For instance, he
32:27
was reported to have
32:29
spat in guard's faces,
32:31
thrown hot coffee at
32:33
a prison staffer, started
32:35
fights, tried to cause
32:37
floods, and even set
32:39
his mattress on fire.
32:41
There were also several
32:44
incidents suggesting Manson might
32:46
have been planning escapes.
32:48
In 1982, at the
32:50
California Medical Facility in
32:52
Vacaville, guards found a
32:54
Haxo blade. marijuana, LSD,
32:56
nylon rope and a
32:58
catalog indicating how to
33:00
purchase a hot air
33:02
balloon in his cell.
33:04
Another time, in 1985,
33:06
he attempted to smuggle
33:08
a Hackso blade into
33:10
San Quentin hidden in
33:12
the soul of his
33:14
shoe. Masen's prison life
33:16
was marked by his
33:18
inability to conform to
33:20
any societal norms, even
33:22
within the confines of
33:24
the penal system. His
33:26
actions were a continuation
33:28
of his life's pattern
33:30
of seeking attention and
33:32
control, making him one
33:34
of the most notorious
33:36
and problematic inmates in
33:39
California's prison history. Charles
33:41
Manson died on the
33:43
19th of November 2019
33:45
of natural causes related
33:47
to acute cardiac arrest,
33:49
resulting from respiratory failure
33:51
and Colin Kansen. He
33:53
was 83 years old
