0:19

Welcome dear friends to another episode

0:22

of The Stories of

0:24

Mahabharata In

0:26

the last episode we heard how

0:28

the Pandavas managed to kill Drona

0:31

using a white lie from Yudhishthir

0:36

The Story of Mahabharata When

0:55

the 15th day of the war concluded with the

0:57

sun setting in the western horizon Duryodhana

1:01

returned to his chamber and called for an urgent

1:04

meeting with his generals With

1:07

the fall of Drona he knew he

1:09

must now select a new commander in chief

1:12

And this time he was determined

1:14

not to pick anyone who sympathized

1:16

with the Pandavas Although

1:19

Bhishma and Drona were the best warriors of

1:21

the Kaurava side they were old

1:23

and always had special feelings for

1:26

the five brothers

1:28

This was their greatest weakness And

1:31

that is what caused their fall They

1:34

willingly gave away their lives to make sure

1:36

the Pandavas win the war Today

1:40

Duryodhana was determined not to

1:42

lose his temper and not to pick

1:45

someone just because of his age

1:47

and experience

1:49

He should select someone who

1:51

is not only a gallant warrior but

1:54

also hates the Pandavas from

1:56

the core of his heart One

2:00

by one, the generals assembled

2:02

in Duryodhana's tent. Duryodhana

2:05

looked at them and in a calm

2:07

voice said, my

2:10

dear friends, we

2:12

all know what kind of a dire situation

2:14

we are in, but

2:17

it is still not too late. With

2:19

your help, we can and

2:22

we will defeat the Pandavas. I

2:26

request you all to speak your mind and

2:28

together let's figure out a plan to

2:30

win this war.

2:33

Aswatthama stood up and said, O

2:37

King, both grandfather

2:40

Bhishma and my father Dronewear, Calent

2:42

warriors and they have done their part.

2:46

We should not give up for with strong

2:48

will and resolve, we

2:51

can carve out a destiny. We

2:54

still have many great warriors amongst

2:56

us who can lead us to our victory.

2:59

I suggest we appoint

3:01

the great warrior and the King

3:03

of Anga, our friend Karna,

3:06

as the new commander in chief.

3:09

Nobody can match his skills with weaponry

3:12

and warfare. I'm sure he

3:14

is the man who can easily defeat

3:16

the enemy and make us victorious.

3:21

Aswatthama, you

3:24

spoke my mind, said Duryodhana,

3:27

as he stood up and walked towards Karna.

3:30

He looked at Karna and extended his arms

3:32

towards him. My dear friend,

3:35

you are the most capable warrior

3:38

amongst us who can defeat the Pandavas.

3:41

I know when Arjun finds you

3:43

are leading our army, he'd leave the

3:45

battlefield in fear and never come

3:47

back.

3:49

I request you to accept my offer to

3:52

take over the Kaurava side as

3:54

our commander in chief.

3:58

Karna held Duryodhana's hand and said,

4:01

my friend, my king, I accept

4:03

your offer. You

4:07

can be rest assured, tomorrow I will

4:10

destroy the Pandavas once

4:12

and for all and bring you victory.

4:18

4:36

4:50

Duryodhan called

4:52

the priests and formally consecrated

4:54

Karna as the car of a commander

4:56

in chief.

4:59

On the 16th day morning, Karna

5:02

appeared on the Kurukshetra battlefield on

5:05

his heavily armed chariot drawn

5:07

by four powerful horses. Karna

5:10

arranged the car of army in the makara

5:12

or crocodile formation with his

5:15

chariot at the top. The

5:17

other Kuru generals covered the rest

5:20

of the vantage points.

5:22

Yudhishthir watched the car of army and

5:24

called upon Arjun. My

5:27

dear brother, most of the

5:29

gallant warriors of the Kauravas are dead.

5:33

Now only the inferior ones

5:35

are left, except

5:36

for Karna. Kill

5:39

Karna and victory

5:41

will be ours. Arjun

5:44

created the crescent moon formation with

5:46

Bhim on the left, Drishtadyumna

5:48

on the right and Yudhishthir in the center.

5:51

Arjun, Nakul and Sahadev stood

5:54

behind Yudhishthir to cover him. With

5:57

the sound of the conch shells ringing out across

6:00

the Kurukshetra, the two armies

6:03

clashed for the sixteenth

6:05

time. The soldiers pounced

6:07

upon each other like fierce animals,

6:09

and soon the battlefield was littered

6:12

with body parts. Bhim

6:14

rode on a huge elephant and

6:16

attacked Khemadhuti, king

6:18

of Kumur. Khemadhuti commanded

6:21

his army to surround Bhim's end from

6:23

all sides. Bhim's elephant trampled

6:26

and killed them like ants. Bhim

6:28

heard a huge mace at

6:29

Khemadhuti and knocked him

6:32

off his elephant. Ashwathama

6:35

attacked Bhim from his chariot. Bhim got

6:37

off the elephant and jumped into a chariot to

6:39

match Ashwathama's speed. The

6:42

two gallant warriors then engaged

6:44

in a ferocious battle using the most fierce

6:47

weapons. Warriors around stopped

6:49

fighting and watched the amazing

6:51

battle between the two giants and

6:53

praised their gallantry. Soon

6:56

both Bhim and Ashwathama were riddled

6:58

with each other's arrows and fell

6:59

unconscious on their respective chariards.

7:03

The charioteers quickly drove them out of the

7:05

battlefield to give them some time

7:07

to recuperate. After

7:09

a little rest, Ashwathama

7:12

asked his charioteer to take him back into

7:14

the battlefield.

7:15

He saw June fighting the

7:17

samsaktaks at a distance. He

7:20

raised his voice and yelled at June, Leave

7:23

those weaklings alone and fight me if you

7:25

can. Let me see what you

7:27

have learned from my father. Krishna

7:30

turned the chariot and drove Arjuna close

7:33

to Ashwathama. Ashwathama,

7:37

I bring my friend Arjuna to you, said

7:39

Krishna.

7:40

Try to strike him hard and be prepared

7:42

to be struck back equally hard.

7:46

This is the time to pay back your Kuru masters

7:49

to make the best use of it. Remember,

7:51

brahmins fight with words, but

7:54

you have chosen to pick up arms like

7:56

a shatriya. So let your

7:58

weapons decide your fate.

7:59

Swobhit, said

8:02

Ashwathama, and in quick succession

8:04

struck both Krishna and Arjuna with his arrows.

8:07

Arjuna laughed and rapidly shot

8:10

hundreds of arrows at Ashwathama over

8:13

one hand. Kings and warriors from

8:15

Anga, Banga and Kalinga came

8:17

on their elephants to attack Arjuna and help

8:20

Ashwathama. But Arjuna's

8:22

arrows were too much for them to handle

8:24

and they soon gave up and fled the battle.

8:29

Ashwathama, however,

8:29

was not rattled by Arjuna's

8:32

incessant attack. Using

8:35

the skills he had learned from his father's drone,

8:38

Ashwathama struck Arjuna and Krishna

8:40

with some deadly weapons and forced

8:43

them to retreat. Arjuna was

8:45

reeling from Ashwathama's attack and was

8:47

struggling to stand on his feet.

8:50

Krishna circled his chariot back and

8:52

said, Focus, Arjun, focus

8:54

on Ashwathama. You have been

8:56

taking him too lightly. Remember

8:59

he is your guru-drone son and

9:01

he is as skilled as you are. Ashwathama

9:05

is vying for revenge and you

9:07

must use all your power to stop him.

9:11

Arjuna wiped off the blood from his face,

9:14

engaged few of the fiercest weapons

9:16

on his gandiver and aimed at

9:19

Ashwathama.

9:20

Within moments, Ashwathama's

9:22

hands, his chest, his heads

9:24

and his thighs were riddled with arrows.

9:28

Arjuna struck Ashwathama's horses and

9:30

the animals ran berserk, fragging

9:33

the chagweed far away from the battlefield.

9:37

On another section of the battlefield, Nakul

9:40

was busy decimating the Kauravar.

9:43

His sharp and deadly arrows killed

9:45

thousands and the soldiers began to flee

9:48

for their lives.

9:50

When Karna, the commander in chief,

9:52

heard of this news, he veered his

9:54

chariot to face Nakul. Nakul

9:57

welcomed Karna with a laugh and said, After

10:00

a long time, the gods have granted

10:02

me my wish and sent you here.

10:05

You are the cause of all this mess. It

10:07

is because of your ill-advised

10:09

weak cousins are now fighting each other.

10:12

The war won't end until you

10:14

die. And today, I'll

10:17

fulfill my duty by killing you. Colonel

10:21

lifted his bow and said,

10:23

My dear Nakul, only

10:26

fools boast more than the fight.

10:28

You stop babbling and fight

10:31

me with all your might. Let's

10:33

see what you've got. Nakul

10:36

was furious. He pulled

10:39

out his deadly weapons and hurled them at

10:41

Karna while circling his chariot. Karna

10:44

laughed and with a skillful use of his

10:46

arrows, he intercepted all and

10:49

destroyed them while in flight. Nakul

10:51

kept shooting arrows at Karna and Karna

10:54

kept dodging them. And then,

10:57

Karna began to shoot at Nakul. The

11:00

incessant flow of arrows from Karna's

11:02

bow covered the sky like a

11:04

dark cloud. Nakul was overwhelmed.

11:08

He tried his best to deflect them but soon

11:10

lost his horses and his charioteer. Karna's

11:14

arrows shattered Nakul's chariot

11:16

and Nakul fell to the ground. He grabbed

11:18

his sword and stood up to defend himself. Karna

11:21

shattered his sword. Nakul

11:23

was scared. He began to run to

11:25

save his life. Karna chased Nakul

11:28

and soon caught up with him.

11:30

Karna extended his arm and grabbed

11:32

Nakul's neck with his bow. Nakul

11:35

struggled to free himself.

11:37

But Karna held him tight and said,

11:40

Now tell me what you were

11:42

saying then.

11:43

You wanted to kill me, right? Nakul

11:46

couldn't speak. Karna

11:49

pulled him close and said, My boy,

11:52

you picked the wrong person to show your

11:54

prowess. You should only

11:56

fight those who are equal to you and avoid

11:59

me.

11:59

the mighty coward of our warriors. I

12:02

can kill you now, but I

12:04

won't. Go back

12:06

to your tend and tend to your injuries. Karna

12:11

released Nakul as remembered

12:13

his promise to Kunti. Except

12:16

Arjun, he won't kill any

12:19

of the remaining four Pandava brothers. Freed

12:23

from Karna's goal, Nakul tried to

12:25

catch his breath while he jumped up on a

12:27

chariot and left the battlefield.

12:32

The Sanjupa-taks continued their mission

12:34

of keeping Arjun engaged in a battle with

12:36

them. Thus sparing the other

12:39

Kaurava warriors from his arms. Arjun

12:43

kept on killing them and they kept on

12:45

attacking him in hoards. It

12:47

seemed they were bent upon dying in

12:49

the hands of Arjun.

12:52

Susharma's brother Satya Sen hurled

12:54

a spear at Krishna. The spear

12:57

pierced Krishna's left arm and

12:59

the reins dropped off his hand. Arjun

13:03

was furious. He pulled out a

13:05

fierce weapon from his chariot and

13:07

with a loud cry hurled

13:09

it at Satya Sen. The weapon struck

13:12

Satya Sen and killed him instantly. He

13:14

then engaged the deadly Indra-stron,

13:17

his Gandev, chanted the activating

13:19

mantra and released it. The weapon

13:22

went

13:22

high into the sky and split

13:25

up into thousands of deadly arrows and

13:27

dove down to strike the enemy soldiers

13:30

and kill them all.

13:34

On the other section of the battlefield, Duryodhana

13:37

was engaged in an intense battle with

13:39

Yudhishthir. Yudhishthir

13:42

was at his best and demonstrated that he

13:45

was no less than his brothers, Bhim

13:47

and Arjun. He attacked

13:49

Duryodhana with such fury that

13:51

the Kaurava king found it difficult

13:54

to keep up. Yudhishthir's

13:56

arrows killed Duryodhana's chariot here and

13:58

the spare horses.

13:59

shattered his bow and his chariot passed.

14:03

Duryodhana couldn't keep his balance. He stumbled

14:05

onto the ground. Karna, Aswatama,

14:08

Sripa saw their king in distress and

14:10

came to save him from Yudhishthir's onslaught.

14:13

Watching Yudhishthir being outnumbered, the

14:15

Pandava brothers surrounded Yudhishthir

14:17

to protect him. A fierce battle

14:19

broke out between the greatest of

14:22

warriors on both sides. Duryodhana

14:24

didn't give up. He jumped up on

14:26

an empty chariot and bounced upon Yudhishthir

14:29

and riddled

14:29

him with arrows. Yudhishthir laughed

14:32

and said, Duryodhana, your arrows

14:34

feel nothing more than pinpricks.

14:37

Don't you have anything more powerful?

14:41

Duryodhana growled in anger and

14:43

looked for more fierce weapons from the chariot.

14:46

Yudhishthir took this opportunity and

14:49

hit him with a volley of arrows that cut

14:51

through his armor. And Duryodhana

14:53

began to bleed. Duryodhana

14:55

knew bows and arrows are not

14:57

his forebear. He picked up his favorite

15:00

weapon, the mace and jumped off

15:02

the chariot. With a huge roar,

15:04

he swirled his mace over his head and ran

15:07

towards Yudhishthir. Yudhishthir

15:09

engaged a fierce weapon

15:11

that glowed like a red hot iron

15:13

and fired it at Duryodhana. The

15:15

weapon shot through the air like a blazing

15:18

meteor and struck Duryodhana on his

15:20

chest and knocked him out. Yudhishthir

15:24

pulled out his sword

15:25

and jumped off the chariot to finish off

15:28

his arch enemy when Bhim

15:30

blocked him on his chariot. Stop!

15:34

Don't slay Duryodhana. He is not

15:36

for you to kill. I have promised

15:38

to kill Duryodhana and I will do so

15:40

when the time comes.

15:42

Till then, you must leave him

15:44

alone and help me keep my promise.

15:48

Yudhishthir remembered the ill-fated day

15:50

of the game of Thais when

15:53

a furious Bhim vowed to crush

15:55

Duryodhana's thigh and kill him.

15:59

I looked at Bhim and said Thank

16:01

you for reminding me. I'll

16:04

live to you then for you. Yudhishthi

16:07

stepped back into this chariot and

16:10

drove away. As

16:16

the sun began to dip behind the western

16:18

horizon, the corn shells

16:20

rang out announcing the end of the sixteenth

16:23

day of the battle,

16:25

and the exhausted soldiers dropped

16:28

their weapons and lay down

16:30

on the ground in relief.
