Welcome to the tortoise. A
0:05
podcast that digs deep. Into
0:09
the power of slow. I
0:11
am Brooke McAlary and I am joined by my
0:13
husband, Ben McAlary.
0:16
It's not a podcast. It's
0:20
a podcast. So
0:24
what's the tortoise going to be all about?
0:26
Well, it's about slow, but it's a
0:29
much more expansive
0:31
idea. Or look at what
0:33
slow is in the world.
0:35
You know, when we first started the Slow Home podcast,
0:38
it was really about home and,
0:41
you know, self development,
0:43
self awareness and what
0:45
slow living could do individually
0:47
and in a closer sense. And it grew
0:49
over time. And I think we tried to make it expansive,
0:53
but the idea of it being about
0:55
the home somehow felt like it kind
0:57
of put walls around what slow could be
1:00
in the conversations we were having. And
1:03
when it became clear that the slow HomePod
1:05
was coming to its natural end,
1:07
we didn't want to finish podcasting and we
1:09
didn't want to finish talking about slow, but
1:12
we were looking for some different kind
1:14
of way in. And that's what the tortoise
1:16
is going to be because you think about what a tortoise
1:19
is, it's slow, but
1:21
it's intentional, it's
1:23
powerful, and that's the lens
1:25
through which I want to look at heaps of different
1:27
topics on this podcast.
1:29
Yeah, absolutely. So how is it different
1:31
to the Slow Home podcast
1:33
R.I.P.?
1:36
It's just more expansive. Yeah, the
1:38
idea of the slow home was
1:41
really what it needed to be for us
1:43
for many years. But
1:45
over time, it it kind of felt
1:48
restrictive, whereas this feels
1:51
much more expansive
1:53
and invitational and looks
1:55
far beyond the home it looks. We're
1:57
going to look at topics that will impact.
2:01
Family, work, community.
2:03
You know, you can take it as broad as you want,
2:06
and it just feels like permission
2:08
to me to make
2:10
a change, which I think we need sometimes.
2:12
You know, we did the slow HomePod for eight
2:14
years and it was wonderful. But
2:17
slowness represents more than
2:19
that to me. And I feel like the
2:21
conversations that we're going to have
2:24
will ripple further.
2:26
And these conversations are going to be recorded
2:29
where we can outdoors.
2:31
They'll be unedited, unfiltered,
2:35
complete with dog barks, wind in the background
2:37
and cars going past.
2:38
You know, and that's the draw to me, actually. You
2:41
and I recorded a couple of episodes,
2:43
the final episodes of The Slow HomePod like
2:45
that. And there was something really
2:48
joyful and candid
2:51
about it. And I want to
2:53
play around with that. You know, I think that
2:56
it's the antithesis to what a
2:58
lot of podcasts have become. And,
3:01
um, and I know I'm
3:03
drawn to real conversations
3:06
rather than highly edited, scripted.
3:13
Jeff.
3:16
I don't know if you can hear it, but the black cockatoos in the background
3:19
going overhead. Sorry, that's just made
3:21
me really happy. They
3:23
mean a lot to me. They do?
3:25
Yeah. You're spirit are an animal.
3:27
Yeah. Do we say spirit? Animal?
3:28
I do. That's
3:31
my spirit animal. The
3:34
car, getting.
3:34
Past neighbors driving down the driveway.
3:39
So, yeah, as you said, they're always
3:41
going to be candid. They're sometimes going to be
3:43
funny. I hope so. And they're going
3:45
to be a monthly podcast.
3:47
Yes. So that's the other shift
3:49
that we've made. I'm all about
3:52
being really intentional
3:54
with our outputs and
3:57
overcommitting is is not
3:59
slow, you know, So
4:01
really just committing to having
4:03
a deep conversation
4:06
once a month at this point feels
4:08
right. Yeah. And so much of what we're doing,
4:11
the changes that we're making are all
4:13
about how things feel and it feels right.
4:15
So I'm and it feels exciting
4:17
and I think it will give us it
4:19
will feel like a. Like
4:22
a treat almost, you know, to to
4:25
to dig in and explore a topic
4:27
deeply once a month.
4:33
We're incredibly excited about what this
4:35
podcast can do, not
4:38
only for us, but hopefully for you, the audience. So
4:40
we encourage you if you haven't already,
4:42
subscribe via Apple Podcasts, Spotify
4:45
or your favorite podcast platform
4:48
and we will be in your ear holes
4:50
with episode one very shortly.
4:54
Until then.
4:55
Take good care.
