really we've got got to got to for

this game like we do the

34:07

intensity and focus is

34:09

indescribable indescribable for this

34:11

game. players, Our players, in players,

34:13

just how keyed is is. time

34:16

since I've been here that is the

34:18

first time since I've been here that we

34:20

haven't had multiple weeks to prepare for the been

34:22

a that's been a little different. It's

34:24

exciting opportunity to opportunity

34:26

to play in the Conference championship game.

34:28

last Friday night and come off of that off of

34:31

that and now I have to prepare

34:33

for really the is really the biggest game of

34:35

the year a a little bit of a challenge, but. But

34:37

our guys, they're challenged every day and I

34:39

know know know I know they'll

34:41

step up and rise rise to the. Let

34:43

me ask ask you this that I've

34:45

heard coaches say that just just

34:47

another game. treated it treated it

34:49

that way. a treated, when it was a because the

34:51

or because the players look at you like

34:53

you're out of your mind. mind. I was

34:55

know, was very honest with our players and say,

34:57

it's not another, you know, when you play your

34:59

rival, you know, when do you try to keep it just

35:02

the same? Or do you keep it you know, or

35:04

is it just different? you amp it, no, it's

35:06

different. is it different. Oh no,

35:08

it's more than anything our players

35:10

do here in the four

35:12

years that they're here, including graduating

35:14

from West Point. that they're

35:16

will be nothing. graduating

35:19

they are judged on

35:21

more nothing this game. judged on

35:23

more than this game. Oh, you graduated from was

35:25

your record against What was That will

35:27

be the question for the

35:29

rest of their will be the question

35:31

it is, the rest of It is just

35:33

a source of pride and, a source of pride and

35:36

we can win that game. game and have

35:38

the commander of chief. I to experience that

35:40

and to be on the

35:42

other end of it. end of

35:44

it is agonizing. I I mean,

35:46

it of the It is one of

35:48

the worst you can have as a have as

35:50

a competitor. how do how do you indoctrinate? your

35:53

first years into what this rivalry

35:55

really is and what it means

35:57

to the two institutions. the two institutions. I think

35:59

The first day when they show

36:02

up and they're taught to say

36:04

beat Navy after everything, every turn

36:06

they make, every command, it is

36:08

beaten into their brains that beating

36:11

them is important. So we do

36:13

talk about the rivalry and we

36:15

have signs up around campus in

36:17

this building that's a beat Navy.

36:20

And so it's a constant reminder.

36:22

that that is a goal and

36:24

it's important and it does it

36:26

matters. It matters here and it

36:28

matters in the army around the

36:31

world. As a simple civilian over

36:33

here and I understand what army

36:35

navy is but on the outside

36:37

I look at it coach and

36:40

I'm like well aren't you guys

36:42

on the same side aren't we

36:44

kind of on the same team

36:46

here right army and navy and

36:49

air force like we're all we're

36:51

all fighting the good fight together

36:53

so why is there this this

36:55

level of hostility of hostility between

36:58

specifically army and navy? Well, none

37:00

of our guys are working together

37:02

with them yet. They won't do

37:04

that until after they graduate. Once

37:07

they graduate, then we're all a

37:09

part of the United States Armed

37:11

Forces, and they do have to

37:13

work jointly and in cooperation with

37:15

the other services. But until then,

37:18

they're just college students and college

37:20

football players, and this rivalry is

37:22

deep and hated, and I assure

37:24

you, there's... Nothing cordial about it.

37:27

We have great what did what

37:29

did Navy do to piss you

37:31

guys off so much? They opened

37:33

a school That that was it.

37:36

I mean, that's all it took

37:38

a rivalry was born. They challenged

37:40

us to a game in 1890

37:42

and There it was so it's

37:45

like every other rivalry. It is

37:47

It's two schools that want to

37:49

win. They take great pride in

37:51

in their institutions and in their

37:54

institutions and and in the rivalry

37:56

and winning the game and so

37:58

it is a it's a it's

38:00

a bitter rivalry rival like every

38:02

other. We have great respect for

38:05

their for their institution, certainly for

38:07

their branch of service, and I

38:09

know they do ours, but it's

38:11

okay to have a rival, and

38:14

it's okay to hold some disdain

38:16

in your heart for your biggest

38:18

rival. That's healthy for a rivalry,

38:20

I think. So tell us a

38:23

little bit about the game. The

38:25

secrets, obviously this is too, I

38:27

always tell people when I used

38:29

to coach against academies, it's really

38:32

hard, you know, when you're not

38:34

only going against academy, but a

38:36

great. These are two excellent football

38:38

teams. One's 11 and 1, one's

38:41

8 and 3. Tell me a

38:43

little keys of the game in

38:45

your mind to beat Navy. The

38:47

keys are to eliminate mistakes or

38:49

to limit those as much as

38:52

possible. It will be so closely

38:54

contested and so intensely

38:56

played from the opening kickoff to

38:58

the very end. There'll be 11

39:00

guys out there just fighting each

39:03

other as hard as they can.

39:05

And so we can't make mistakes.

39:07

We can't turn the ball over.

39:09

We can't miss assignments. We can't

39:11

have foolish penalties. The things that

39:14

we can control, we've got to

39:16

do a great job of control.

39:18

And not allowing emotion to stand

39:20

in the way of execution. So

39:22

great fundamentals. just good at blocking

39:25

and tackling and taking care of

39:27

the ball, the things that we

39:29

always talk about in winning football

39:31

games, but we gotta do that

39:33

at a really high level and

39:36

do it really well because the

39:38

other team is gonna do that

39:40

well too. And the want and

39:42

the desire to win this game

39:44

is never higher to win a

39:46

football game than it is in

39:49

this one. It's just awesome to

39:51

be a competitor in it to

39:53

watch those warriors out there battle

39:55

and to be a part of

39:57

it. It's truly incredible. What percentage

40:00

of the cadets will be at

40:02

the game? 100%. Is that amazing?

40:04

It is. Full student bodies will

40:06

fill the stands. Oh man. Rob,

40:08

you've got to go to this

40:11

Rob. So good. I'm getting shows

40:13

right now. It's one of the

40:15

greatest experiences I've ever had in

40:17

my lifetime when you watch the

40:19

mitties and the cadets walk in.

40:22

And our world has a lot

40:24

of issues. That day there aren't

40:26

any. When I watch the men

40:28

and women in these incredible academies,

40:30

the way they look, the way

40:33

they act, the way they support

40:35

their team. And Jeff knows that.

40:37

It's almost 9,000 young people that

40:39

have made a commitment to serve

40:41

this nation as military officers. And

40:44

that's awesome, just to have a

40:46

generation of young men and women

40:48

that are willing to make that

40:50

pledge. And we've got men and

40:52

women in this country that are

40:55

taking that pledge every day at.

40:57

at places around the country, that

40:59

young men and women are walking

41:01

into recruiting centers and taking the

41:03

oath and joining one of our

41:06

branches of military service. So there's

41:08

some great Americans out there that

41:10

are willing to stand in the

41:12

gap between freedom and those that

41:14

want to take it from us.

41:17

And thank goodness, there's Americans being

41:19

born every day that are going

41:21

to make that pledge. Coach, what

41:23

was one of the opening moments?

41:25

in your career at West Point

41:28

where you said, oh, being a

41:30

part of this football program at

41:32

Army is different. I'm sure you

41:34

knew it was different going in,

41:36

but what was one of those

41:39

moments where it was water in

41:41

the face type thing? Man, that's

41:43

a great question. I think my

41:45

opening game here, the Army Chief

41:47

of Staff was there. That's a

41:50

four-star general. Just there to support.

41:52

the first game and just his

41:54

presence there spoke volumes about how

41:56

important Army football was to the

41:58

Army. My first game

42:01

here. game here, I I mean,

42:03

the urban, I'll tell you, tell you,

42:05

the is is just littered. uniforms

42:08

with stars on it. it. And it

42:10

means everything means everything to

42:12

our branch of service, this game and

42:14

to win this game. game. So, I mean,

42:17

I mean, just the magnitude

42:19

of this This rivalry, this

42:21

game, means people people beyond

42:23

this campus, that that certainly got my

42:25

got my attention. I think as

42:27

an assistant. coaching

42:30

this game on the other other other sideline

42:32

of it. of it but the

42:34

head coach. coach you're you're introduced

42:36

to all those people people and

42:38

they make sure that you sure that you

42:40

take notice of... are there those that

42:42

are there to show up for the

42:44

game and up for the game

42:47

the sideline be there on the the locker there

42:49

in the locker room. are pretty incredible

42:51

are pretty incredible moments not not very

42:53

many Americans get to experience that.

42:55

How do you celebrate you win? a

42:57

win over Navy? What do you

42:59

allow your players to do?

43:02

everybody celebrates in our celebrates we

43:04

own way. those When we have won those

43:06

games, we've gone into the locker room

43:08

and celebrated together as a team. a team.

43:10

And then most then most of the

43:12

players and coaches just join their

43:15

families families. there's been times where we've had. we've

43:17

The coaches get together at the

43:19

hotel the hotel all the families and

43:21

it's a chance to decompress. chance to and

43:24

really just enjoy the moment. enjoy the

43:27

but But frankly, the emotional

43:29

exhaustion. that I

43:31

experience as a a

43:33

coach, we as a coaching

43:35

staff after that game. staff after

43:37

that game, about knocks you

43:39

out. And you out. And won, won,

43:41

you know, up my phone and

43:43

there's 500 text messages. When

43:46

we don't, there's about five. and

43:48

when we I try to answer

43:50

them all about way. I try to

43:52

answer them all, either way, but

43:54

it's it's... It's It's just incredible to know

43:56

how many people are paying attention, how many people that are.

43:59

that are friends. and ones that just want

44:01

to support us us. And so we usually order

44:03

pizza from a local pizza shop and

44:05

I sit up in the room with

44:07

my family the room with my family, and I family

44:09

that comes to the games and we

44:12

just we just sit in there and we

44:14

just sit in it. enjoy it. Well, a great friend

44:16

friend, Coach, and for you as always always, and

44:18

you for giving you big hug on big hug

44:20

on the I'm looking forward to that as
