The disciple, Thomas devised a
0:04
kind of experiment to test the
0:06
claim that Jesus had risen from
0:08
the dead. From Moody Bible
0:10
Institute, this is today in the word,
0:13
and I'm John Gieger. It's
0:15
one of the most famous statements in the entire New Testament.
0:18
Today, in the word, we hear the words of Thomas
0:20
echoing from John 20, verse 25,
0:23
unless I see the nail marks
0:25
in his hands and put my finger
0:27
where the nails were and put my
0:29
hands into his side, I
0:31
will not believe. Now
0:34
Thomas, you know, was not alone in his doubt.
0:36
According to Luke 24, verse 11,
0:38
the other disciples had difficulty accepting
0:41
the testimony of Mary Magdalene and the other
0:43
women who had seen Jesus at the tomb.
0:45
Their skepticism was only remedied
0:48
by experience. Jesus
0:50
appeared again on the evening of that first
0:52
day of the week, when the disciples were together
0:54
with the doors locked, for fear of the
0:56
Jewish leaders. Now, this is
0:59
not a picture of faith and courage.
1:01
It shows the disciples hunkered down
1:03
behind locked doors and terrified.
1:06
Jesus didn't bother to knock and wait
1:08
to be let in. He came and stood
1:11
among them. Nor did he chide
1:13
them for their unbelief and fear. Instead,
1:16
he greeted them with a customary shalom.
1:19
Jesus breathed on them in anticipation
1:21
of Pentecost, told them to receive
1:24
the Holy Spirit, and commissioned them
1:26
as his witnesses and messengers.
1:29
The peace that Jesus offers and the
1:31
promise of the Holy Spirit do not
1:33
belong only to those who have
1:35
seen him with their own eyes, but to
1:37
all who will believe. That's
1:40
you and me. Hope you have believed him.
1:42
