Here is the Under the Hood Show

0:49

podcast. This is Under the Hood. Welcome

0:51

to the Under the Hood Show. We

0:54

are glad to have you with us.

0:56

Russ Evans is here to answer your

0:58

automotive questions. Thanks for joining us under

1:01

the hood. Shannon Nordstrom is here to

1:03

do the same. Welcome hoodies. Thanks for

1:05

tuning in so we can help you

1:07

tune up. I'm Chris Carter here to

1:10

answer your calls at 866-594-1-50. We've

1:12

got Bill in Wisconsin who's been waiting

1:14

a while to get on here while

1:16

we started the show, so let's get

1:18

right to him and say, Bill, you are

1:20

on the end of the hood show. What can

1:23

we do for you? I have a 21 GMC

1:25

Sierra with the three-literamax

1:27

and it came with two

1:29

intermittent starting issues. The first one

1:31

you would push the button, it

1:33

wouldn't fire the injectors, it would just

1:36

crank to a timed out, the second

1:38

time you push it, it would start

1:40

right up. GMC released a TSB

1:42

and that issue I guess was caused

1:44

by an improper positioning of

1:46

the cam position sensor trigger

1:49

wheel. So they reprogram the

1:51

ECM to turn two complete revolutions

1:53

of the crank shaft, relearn

1:56

that wheel every time you

1:58

hit the start button. And

2:00

that issue has not happened since.

2:02

The other issue is where you

2:05

push the start button, it doesn't

2:07

start, and then you can push

2:09

as many times as you want,

2:12

it won't start for 30 or

2:14

45 minutes. Then it'll start up

2:16

and it'll run fine. That's only

2:19

happened four or five times since

2:21

I've owned the truck, but the

2:23

last time it happened, it was

2:26

seven degrees outside and I was

2:28

with my wife who wasn't. happy

2:30

with spending 30 minutes in a

2:33

cold truck. I don't blame her.

2:35

So I'm under some pressure to

2:37

get that one fixed. It shows

2:40

a battery voltage low message when

2:42

that happens. I replaced the battery,

2:44

it hasn't happened since, but that

2:47

was only about three weeks ago.

2:49

I bought a scanner and I

2:51

figured out how to read the

2:54

engine data. I was hoping that

2:56

maybe when it happens. I would

2:58

see like no campus distance sensor

3:01

or crankshep system sensor or some

3:03

indicator which might show where the

3:05

issue is. But do you guys

3:08

have any clue? How would you

3:10

diagnose something like that? Exactly the

3:12

way you're doing it, but there's

3:15

going to be more to it.

3:17

You're going to have to read

3:19

the data and then compare that

3:22

data to actual function with a

3:24

multimeter. At sensors, at injectors,

3:26

you know, at the pump, all

3:28

of it to find out what

3:30

is not working. If the computer

3:32

says that X is happening but

3:34

Y is not, we need to

3:36

find out what that is. It

3:38

is not easy to do, especially

3:40

when it's intermittent, because the second

3:42

you get some equipment on there

3:44

to test it, it's going to

3:46

fire right up. It's not something

3:48

you can test with the engine

3:50

off. And these things are becoming

3:52

so difficult on these. on these

3:54

vehicles now, especially when you get

3:56

something like this with a push

3:58

button start, that low voltage code,

4:00

it's probably coming up because it's

4:02

cranking so long. If it cranks

4:04

too long, it's going to pull

4:06

the battery down enough where it's

4:08

going to give you that code.

4:10

I can't remember what the exact

4:12

voltage is. With the first starting

4:14

issue, if it cranks till it

4:16

times out, but it never gave

4:18

the low voltage message. Okay. If

4:20

it was doing that, and now

4:22

though... It's crank and it's, you've

4:24

got that automatically, it may not

4:26

be firing because if the system,

4:28

if that computer thinks the voltage

4:30

is below a certain point, it

4:32

won't, it won't engage, it can't,

4:34

it can't fire the engine. It

4:36

may, it may be a programming

4:38

issue or it could be a

4:40

bad ECM, it could have an

4:43

issue with that, could have a

4:45

wiring issue as well, but if

4:47

it's, if it's setting a code,

4:49

if you measure voltage at your

4:51

battery, and your voltage doesn't go

4:53

beyond the threshold that it should

4:55

be at for low voltage, you've

4:57

got a problem in the strategy

4:59

in that computer, what it's thinking.

5:01

So let's say the manual for

5:03

that says 12.1 volts, minimum cranking

5:05

voltage to fire the injection. But

5:07

the computer thinks it's at 10.6,

5:09

but your battery when you're measuring

5:11

it, says 12.4. It's like, no,

5:13

I'm still way above that. but

5:15

my computer is saying it's less

5:17

than there's going to be a

5:19

problem. I had that problem on

5:21

my truck and it's 30 years

5:23

old. My computer would tell me

5:25

that while it was running I

5:27

had 14.4 volts at the battery

5:29

and the alternator and at the

5:31

wiring going right into the computer

5:33

but my computer was was reading

5:35

like 11 I think it was

5:37

10 and a half to 11

5:39

like that's not right because I've

5:41

got power I've got ground in

5:43

my power and ground right at

5:45

the computer saying over 14 but

5:47

that thing was was It was

5:49

chugging, it was not running the

5:51

injector pump correctly, and it was

5:53

surgeon going down the road. And

5:55

that was a computer. issue. I

5:57

ended up changing the computer to

5:59

fix that problem. So it could

6:01

be it could be as simple

6:03

as a reflash that updates that

6:05

like they did the they had

6:07

the so this is the new

6:09

problem they fixed the problem with

6:11

your your cam crank correlation error.

6:13

They read they relearn that update

6:15

could have caused another problem. I

6:17

would well I would also encourage

6:19

you I'm sure you've already done

6:21

this but like on the internet

6:23

on GM authority or There is

6:25

maybe Duremax forums out there. There's,

6:27

yeah, there are other people who

6:29

have reported. The one issue is

6:31

very common. There's dozens of YouTube

6:33

videos where it doesn't, where it

6:35

always starts the second time. There's

6:37

hundreds of probably thousands of people

6:39

who reported that issue. That's right.

6:41

I think they got the TSP.

6:43

It happened frequently enough. They could

6:45

figure out what it was doing.

6:47

There's other people who have reported

6:49

this issue, but no one has

6:51

come up with a solution as

6:53

far as far as I can

6:55

tell. It's only happened four or

6:57

five times since I've owned a

6:59

truck and I bought it new

7:01

in 21. The first time it

7:03

happened was the second day I

7:05

owned the truck. It happened prior

7:07

to this reflash. It's happened in

7:09

the middle of summer after it's

7:11

parked 10 minutes. It's happened the

7:13

first time I started for today.

7:15

The last time was after sitting

7:17

an hour in a parking lot.

7:19

How many miles are on this

7:21

truck now? About 45, oh wow.

7:23

Oh wow. They are really good

7:25

trucks when they work and don't

7:27

have problems. I mean, the fuel

7:29

economy, the torque, I got an

7:31

employee that works in our team

7:33

that has one and he's had

7:35

some transmission issues and some things.

7:37

We've had them in, people asking

7:39

us to work on them and

7:41

once they're out of warranty, they're

7:43

getting harder to find people that

7:45

want to work on them. Even

7:47

the dealerships a lot of times

7:49

do not want to work on

7:52

those. Which is sad. But... And

7:54

don't forget it's got a timing

7:56

belt. It's got a timing belt.

8:00

I know it has that the oil

8:02

pump is dripping by a belt. Yeah,

8:04

so it's got a timing belt on

8:06

the back of the engine. It's not

8:09

up front where people normally see it

8:11

and it's called a wet belt. It's

8:13

run in the oil. So it does

8:15

have a replacement interval. In fact, I

8:17

just had a guy that had one

8:20

with 90,000 miles needed a transmission in

8:22

it and he was taking it in

8:24

and he was calling me saying they

8:26

got my transmission out. Eric. Yeah. timing

8:29

belt on the back of the motor.

8:31

Yeah, it's time to do it while

8:33

they've got the transmission out. It'll save

8:35

you a fair amount of money. Yeah,

8:38

so These are things that I don't

8:40

I tell people I've worn them Find

8:42

out what your vehicle has when you

8:44

get it, but this no-start thing Hopefully

8:47

like you said, it's pretty rare even

8:49

on the internet. It's pretty rare, but

8:51

it's happening. So people are seeing it

8:53

so you got to keep paying attention

8:56

to it watch it watch it and

8:58

fix it. Once they get it nailed

9:00

down, they'll be able to release a

9:02

bulletin about it or people will know.

9:05

Just a little more on this before

9:07

we go into another caller. If you

9:09

had it at the shop and it

9:11

was not starting and you put scanner

9:14

on it, I know you're not going

9:16

to want it, he's already said, I

9:18

don't want it. But if you had

9:20

the scanner on it, couldn't you tell

9:23

with your data at that point what's

9:25

missing? Why it's not starting? 30

9:28

to 45 minutes where it will not start. So I would think if

9:30

we were at the shop when it was actually happening, they could figure

9:32

out what was wrong. You would think so. Because you got to figure

9:34

out what's missing. Is it not getting fuel? Because for some reason there's

9:36

a valve that's not kicking in that bypasses fuel? If you're back probing

9:39

at the pump and you're trying to crank it and there's nothing there,

9:41

but the computer says that it's sending out a signal? and you're checking

9:43

at the computer at the ECM, you're checking at the... the

9:45

injector pump, you're checking all that, and

9:47

there's nothing coming out. Then we

9:49

know we got a computer issue. It's

9:52

not turning them on. And that's

9:54

how, that's how they check for those

9:56

things. If they're, if they're getting

9:58

a reading as you're cranking it and

10:00

you say, oh, I got cam

10:02

rotation. I got crankshaft rotation. Well, I'm

10:04

going to stick my meter right

10:07

on it coming into the computer. Well,

10:09

it says it's dead. There's nothing

10:11

coming in. Why is the computer giving

10:13

me a reading? It's putting in

10:15

a reading there. It's, it's substituting a

10:17

value, but something is going on

10:20

there. That's how they check those things.

10:22

That's how they find them. So

10:24

he's got a little bit of an

10:26

advantage if he could have it

10:28

die. Rollets. Well, it's somewhere that somebody's

10:30

got the knowledge. it's only done

10:32

it a few times since he's owned

10:35

it, they're not going to touch

10:37

it. Bill, thanks very much for the

10:39

call. Good luck. I just got

10:41

back, by the way, I was gone.

10:43

When you said, check like at

10:45

GM authority. And then you said, I

10:48

thought, or baby max, baby Dura

10:50

max, baby Dura max. And I was

10:52

like, is it really baby or

10:54

is it maybe? Or did you say

10:56

maybe I said, baby, baby max,

10:58

baby Dura max. And that's what it's

11:00

called. Little three liter, small Dura

11:03

max engine is what the people have

11:05

kind of coined it. All right.

11:07

That's what I was thinking. I was

11:09

thinking a little like go kart. It's

11:12

much smaller when you see it in

11:14

the warehouse. Can we dismantle our go kart?

11:16

Yeah, exactly. It for a long go

11:18

kart rides. 866

11:21

-594 -4150. We're going to take a break when

11:23

we come back. We want to hear from you.

11:25

You only, you don't want to, you only

11:27

want to diesel go kart. If you're doing a

11:30

lot of go karting, you don't want to

11:32

go short trips. You want to get that thing

11:34

out on the road. 866

11:37

-594 -4150. That's the number to reach

11:39

us here at the end of

11:41

the hood show. Let's go to

11:43

Mississippi and talk to Vernon. You're

11:45

on the end of the hood

11:47

show. Vernon, what can we do

11:49

for you? Hey guys, how you

11:51

doing? Fantastic, Vernon. Hey, I got

11:53

a 2022 LS 500 Lexus. That

11:56

can't be a line.

11:58

All four tires, where are

12:00

they? inside all the time only get about

12:02

25 miles for having to change and

12:05

I'm tell by the factory not

12:07

the factory but the dealer

12:09

that they're hard mounted

12:11

at the plan or something like

12:13

that and you can't align it

12:15

is just true or they are right

12:17

as dealer you need to go to

12:20

an alignment shop and I mean not

12:23

You know no offense to the the

12:25

less swab people or whatever out

12:27

there that do those kind of

12:29

that they come in you get

12:32

an alignment done a tires Plus

12:34

or whatever Walmart wherever

12:36

they're doing a regular quick

12:38

alignment with a computer that

12:41

says do it this way

12:43

you need to go to You know the the

12:45

guy who also straightens frames

12:47

like a truck shop alignment where

12:49

they do cars they do everything

12:51

Because what they're going to do

12:54

is, they, now, good alignment. The

12:56

guy is doing it through cigarette

12:58

smoke. Yeah, that'll do. That's not

13:00

a prerequisite, but, but I know,

13:02

I know a couple good aligners.

13:04

I mean, you know, in our

13:06

era, we got a guy down

13:09

in T that is really good with

13:11

alignments, and he can do this

13:13

kind of stuff. But the way

13:15

he's going to do this is first,

13:17

he's going to look and see if

13:19

there is a kit to adjust. Without

13:21

the kid installed that now makes it like

13:24

a little adapter shim or something bolts that

13:26

are that are cam so you can so

13:28

now now it's adjustable It's gonna cost you

13:31

some money. I can remember like back years

13:33

ago and we were doing alignment in a

13:35

standard alignment that time not at our shop

13:37

But another shop I was at was like

13:40

3995 But a lot of those alignments were 200

13:42

bucks by the time we were done with

13:44

it because we had to put all these

13:46

one-time kits in there and then

13:48

it was back to the 3995 for

13:50

the alignment But that allowed us to

13:53

adjust these things. If they couldn't be

13:55

adjusted, I know a guy here not too far

13:57

up the road that will put a hook

13:59

on... the frame and he will bend

14:01

it into bend that you'll grab all

14:03

that arm and he will bend it

14:06

until it's right dead center of that

14:08

alignment where it needs to be and

14:10

then he's got some alignment to play

14:12

with or if it's a non-alienable car

14:14

like that where you can't adjust Caster

14:17

and Camber they will pull it until

14:19

they get and we're talking about a

14:21

couple millimeters it doesn't take much but

14:23

they'll pull it until they'll pull it

14:25

until they'll line the rest of it

14:28

so They cannot just put a simple

14:30

wrench on it and align the car.

14:32

No, at the dealership. With what you're

14:34

having, they can't. But can things be

14:36

done to get that car to be

14:39

aligned? Yes, it can be done. It

14:41

just doesn't seem right, Russ, that he

14:43

would be hooking chains to Alexis. Right.

14:45

To anything? Yeah. You said it's expensive

14:47

but it can't be more than four

14:50

tiles or two thousand dollars. That's right.

14:52

I mean I could see I could

14:54

see an alignment being You know this

14:56

guy here if I went in and

14:58

he told me I had this LS

15:00

500 and he said it was going

15:03

to be 750 bucks to align it

15:05

this one time and then we'll be

15:07

back to a normal alignment after that.

15:09

I'd be like let's get it done.

15:11

I don't want to be putting tires

15:14

on it plus the ride can't be

15:16

the best. You're not holding like bricks

15:18

or anything real heavy are you a

15:20

brick salesman or a you know this

15:22

is the wife's car and I think

15:25

that's pretty bad but other than that

15:27

no we're not hauler okay got all

15:29

the girls in the car we got

15:31

we put five of us in there

15:33

and the wife and shopping bags and

15:36

trunk and she's loaded down because you

15:38

will you can get issues if a

15:40

car is overloaded off all the time

15:42

but nothing not like that no okay

15:44

good you know the Mercedes they and

15:47

the BMWs we had a specification. We

15:49

put weights in. So we would put

15:51

a weight, weights in the passenger seat,

15:53

weights in the driver's seat, front, rear,

15:55

wherever it was, and align this car

15:57

in different positions to compensate for that.

16:00

They were very picky about their alignments.

16:02

I don't see that as much. You

16:04

ever have that eyeball, like when I

16:06

come in, do they go, we're gonna

16:08

align? I look at your car. We

16:11

got to align that for a, we

16:13

got to account for him. You know,

16:15

when we, we don't do alignment, but

16:17

we do. I didn't know where you're

16:19

going there. We do front end work

16:22

and stuff, and we will, we will

16:24

eyeball it with a gauge. We have

16:26

an alignment gauge. We have an alignment

16:28

gauge. We have an alignment gauge. We

16:30

stick it on the front side of

16:33

the wheels on the back side, but

16:35

we have had people It is hard

16:37

as a mechanic. It's nice when you

16:39

have a service advisor We don't like

16:41

that can you can say you do

16:44

it But when the guy comes in

16:46

with his brand new Lincoln that's six

16:48

months old and we've we're on the

16:50

third power seat now because the base

16:52

is broken When you look it up

16:54

in the manual and the manual says

16:57

this seat has a weight limit and

16:59

it's 250 pounds and this gentleman exceeds

17:01

that by at least 100 pounds you

17:03

don't want to be the guy to

17:05

have to say that and if you

17:08

look you the cars all have a

17:10

spec for the seat so there is

17:12

a weight limit for seats in cars

17:14

we went a different direction here but

17:16

You started the Chris. Well, we're talking

17:19

about the alignment specs and stuff like

17:21

that. Well, I know Chris started this

17:23

though, but a C, your wife, no,

17:25

no, no, no, has nothing to do

17:27

with that. But the seats, they're made

17:30

to collapse when you get in rear

17:32

and collisions and things like that and

17:34

different stuff, so they all have to

17:36

have a weight limit on them. But

17:38

with alignments, alignments have to account for

17:41

a car with one driver that could

17:43

weigh, let's say as little as a

17:45

hundred pounds, or... All five passengers are

17:47

at the car that are at the

17:49

max of let's say the car has

17:52

a 225 per seat limit on average

17:54

and you've got five seats full That's

17:56

a lot of weight on the suspension

17:58

compared to and then the trunk compared

18:00

to the one single driver so that

18:02

the suspension as it travels up and

18:05

down has to maintain contact with the

18:07

road perfectly so that's why everything's at

18:09

a different angle so that it like

18:11

wipers that are really long on some

18:13

vehicles they go up as they move

18:15

over and then back down like your

18:17

aunt eater thing you owned the the van oh

18:20

yeah uplander uplander had that wiper

18:22

that went yeah because it was

18:24

just one burn in thanks very

18:26

much for the call good luck

18:29

866-594-4150. We're gonna stay in Mississippi

18:31

and talk to Terrell. You're on

18:33

the end of the hood show.

18:35

What can we do for you? Hey,

18:38

how you doing? Fantastic.

18:40

Yeah, yeah, I got a 20 and 25

18:42

Kia, say 5. You know, my daughter's

18:44

car, she bought a brand new

18:46

and she drives. I'm like 5

18:48

minutes to work every day. What

18:51

would be the interval on the

18:53

orange chain on that first

18:55

time at least? The brand new

18:57

Tia. Yeah, I was just going

18:59

to say the brand new part

19:01

is first oil change is probably

19:04

going to be closer to 10,000

19:06

miles. See what the factory recommends,

19:08

but they're going to recommend probably

19:10

8 to 10,000 on most of them,

19:12

but you're going to have to read

19:15

because I've seen some of them that

19:17

are a thousand miles. But most of

19:19

them are higher, and the reason they

19:21

do that is because they want the

19:24

engine to break in properly. You change

19:26

strategies. After that if she's

19:28

driving it that after that if

19:30

she's driving that car just that

19:33

short distance every day you definitely

19:35

need to be in three months

19:37

three thousand that three thousand mile

19:39

range approximately yes or three months

19:41

don't loan will that go out

19:44

six eight months right here if it's

19:46

that that short yeah I'm just concerned

19:48

about that that first you know I

19:50

know that breaking it all and all

19:52

that she's going about eight thousand miles

19:55

Maybe you got it that's you know, do

19:57

you know what the factory spec is for the

19:59

first oil change? Uh, I know you can't

20:02

really remember the factory, you know, or

20:04

what they say, you know, you know.

20:06

Yeah, I would be tempted, I'm not

20:08

tempted, I would ask their salesman to

20:10

ask their service manager or whatever. Hey,

20:13

what is the factory recommendation for the

20:15

first oil change on this car? Yeah,

20:17

because they do it too soon. Yeah,

20:19

because they might just say when the

20:21

light comes on because they will program

20:24

it to turn the light on at.

20:26

this time. I wonder how many times...

20:28

For the first oil change. For the

20:30

first oil change, right? To be different.

20:32

To real, thanks very much for the

20:35

call. Good luck. I wonder how many

20:37

times that's burned them in that they

20:39

put that in the book or whatever

20:41

and then me, I see, oh, 10,000

20:43

miles. I can do it every 10,000

20:46

miles. There's a lot of things like

20:48

that, Chris. I think that that would

20:50

be a common problem. We had a

20:52

vehicle we bought and they said, no,

20:54

we don't want you changing this till

20:57

10,000 miles. Perfect. And I'm like, boy,

20:59

then I'm thinking, that's not all the

21:01

time. You look at the Oil Change

21:03

interval, it was not that. Just that

21:05

first time. Yep. The Under the Hood

23:47

first specialty car... I called up my agent

23:49

and had him put it under my regular

23:52

auto policy and had very minimal coverage. Even

23:54

dropping coverage in the storage months to keep

23:56

the costs down. That was before I met

23:58

the professionals at Berkeley. I'm Shannon Nordstrom,

means if you suffer a loss,

24:11

there's no haggle over the value

of your vehicle. They also showed

24:15

me that I could insure my

24:17

vehicle for what it was really

24:19

worth and keep my coverage year-round

24:21

and still save money. I did

24:23

it was stored in my garage

what, how old he is? Michigan.

25:30

Did he used to return, was

25:32

he the special team's returner on

25:34

my high school football team? No.

25:36

Okay, just checking. That'd be weird.

25:38

Same name? Yeah. Yeah, it'd be

25:40

weird, huh? How great would that

25:43

be. Be fun. Yeah. 866, 594,

25:49

There we go. Let's go to

25:51

Idaho and talk to John. You're

25:53

on the end of the hood

25:55

show, John. What can we do

25:57

for you? I've got a 2010

25:59

Chevy Traverse. I've had it for,

26:01

since 2016. We now have to

26:03

ride around 230,000 miles on it.

26:05

It's been a great car. We've

26:08

had very little issues other than

26:10

regular maintenance breaks, that type of

26:12

stuff. But, you know, about a

26:14

year ago, I noticed with the

26:16

transmission. Once in a while, it

26:18

wouldn't a while, it wouldn't shift.

26:20

It just stayed low. And so

26:22

I took it into my regular

26:24

service people. They're really good. I

26:26

know them well. And they checked

26:28

it all out. They flushed the

26:30

transmission new filter. I've always used

26:33

synthetic fluid in it. And they

26:35

said, we can't find anything wrong

26:37

with it. And anyway, I when

26:39

it wouldn't shift, if I would

26:41

come to a complete stop and

26:43

then take off again, it would

26:45

be just fine. And I wouldn't

26:47

have any problem again maybe for

26:49

several days, even weeks and weeks.

26:51

And I never have the issue

26:53

and I'm on a freeway. And

26:55

I've noticed here just lately, because

26:58

I always have it in a

27:00

garage and we get really cold

27:02

here in Idaho, you know, Idaho

27:04

Falls. And I... If I leave

27:06

it sitting outside, if I go

27:08

somewhere, like the one where my

27:10

son's home or wherever and it's

27:12

left sitting outside, I go out.

27:14

The first time I try that

27:16

I go, it won't shift. And

27:18

so I pull the side of

27:20

the road, come to a complete

27:22

stop, take off, and it shifts

27:25

just fine then. And so I

27:27

wondered if you have any cures

27:29

for that or know what's causing

27:31

it. You're not turning it off,

27:33

you're just coming to a complete

27:35

stop, correct? That's correct. So if

27:37

you just. pull up to a

27:39

stoplight and take off, it'll go

27:41

ahead and shift again as well.

27:43

Right. At that point, if I

27:45

was looking to diagnosis, I would

27:47

have a scanner with me and

27:50

I would find out what's going

27:52

on. It should tell me so

27:54

that when that transmission attempts to

27:56

shift gears from first to second

27:58

to third year, and it does

28:00

not, it's going to set a

28:02

code in the background. It should.

28:04

If it doesn't, there's a problem

28:06

with the computer because it knows

28:08

that, all right, we should have

28:10

shifted the second gear. Why is

28:12

our RPM at 3,000 now at

28:15

30 miles an hour? I got

28:17

a gear ratio problem going on

28:19

here, either the transition slipping or

28:21

that solenoid failed because I commanded

28:23

the solenoid on, the computer says

28:25

I turned it on, and we

28:27

didn't change RPM. The road speed's

28:29

increasing, engine RPM. We should have

28:31

dropped that engine RPM with road

28:33

speed. Something's going on. So it

28:35

should know it. But if you

28:37

come to a stop and you

28:40

take off and now it shifts

28:42

properly, that's going to be a

28:44

pending code in history that wouldn't

28:46

turn your light on yet. And

28:48

now it's going to go away

28:50

because it's going to check it

28:52

the next time and it's working.

28:54

I have a suspicion that maybe

28:56

you have a solenoid hanging up

28:58

in that transmission. And if that

29:00

solenoid is stuck and not turning

29:02

on. Or if it's turning on

29:04

but the valve's not moving in

29:07

the valve body, that's that's what's

29:09

going on and it might be

29:11

a case where so in our

29:13

shop We use the Justice Brothers

29:15

transmission cleaner in vehicles before I

29:17

flush a transmission and then their

29:19

transmission additive after they're protected and

29:21

when I do that What it's

29:23

doing is it's cleaning up these

29:25

valves as they move so I'd

29:27

in your case if it was

29:29

in my shop I'd put the

29:32

cleaner in while the transmissions warm

29:34

or hot I drive it, make

29:36

sure it shifts through all the

29:38

gears, but I do that multiple

29:40

times. Maybe 10, stop and starts,

29:42

bring it back into the shop,

29:44

flush the whole... thing out and

29:46

then put the additive in it

29:48

and drive it again to make

29:50

sure everything's moving and working well

29:52

and that may be all it

29:54

needs to clean it up. We

29:57

can't forget here though that it

29:59

does have two hundred and thirty

30:01

thousand miles on it and if

30:03

that transmission is original you have

30:05

done amazingly well for that one

30:07

you betcha. Yeah because I think

30:09

it was what they call it

30:11

a reaction drum or planetary or

30:13

something there they had a problem

30:15

with inside those transmissions and it

30:17

could be something that's just war

30:19

enough that it's hanging up at

30:22

certain times. fluid flush that Russ

30:24

is talking about with the treatment

30:26

might bring back some movement in

30:28

something that's getting caught. It might

30:30

be worth a try because otherwise

30:32

you're up against a pretty significant

30:34

transmission cost. I'm proud of what

30:36

you got going there because they

30:38

said we see a lot of

30:40

them that would fail at 70,

30:42

80, 90, 110,000 miles in traverses

30:44

and enclaves and that whole Acadias

30:47

in that era. there actually was

30:49

a transmission Bolton that the dealer

30:51

put out there the factory put

30:53

out in one of them years

30:55

I can't remember it went clear

30:57

to 10 or not but that's

30:59

I think you're doing great and

31:01

I you've got a real good

31:03

sense for your vehicle which is

31:05

a good thing too. I had

31:07

bought it at a hundred and

31:09

eight thousand miles on it and

31:11

used and changed the put the

31:14

synthetic fluid in it immediately and

31:16

I've been great until I say

31:18

the last, probably listening here, it's

31:20

been doing this, but it's so

31:22

intermittent. And so you say it's

31:24

Justice Brothers fluid flush, is that

31:26

what you call it? We use

31:28

the Justice Brothers Chemical to flush

31:30

these out, it's available professional automotive

31:32

shops, so you just ask the

31:34

place you normally go to if

31:36

they carry that. Right, okay. And

31:39

then there's a treatment you put

31:41

in with the fill afterwards. Correct,

31:43

to protect them. John, thanks very

31:45

much for the call, good luck.

31:47

31:51

go to Oklahoma

31:53

and talk to

31:55

Warren. You're on

31:57

the end of

31:59

the hood show

32:01

Warren. What can

32:04

we do for

32:06

you? Well, I

32:08

had a question about availability of

32:10

used parts and it came about

32:12

after driving from Tulsa to Oklahoma

32:14

City and seeing a lot of

32:17

Little in tow caravans where there'll

32:19

be one offable vehicle all three

32:21

of them look Trains damage probably

32:23

bought at a at an auction

32:25

and And they're bumper -to -bumper and

32:27

my understanding is they're going to

32:29

Mexico I'm not sure if they're

32:31

being parted out there or rebuilt

32:33

a week We but I thought

32:35

that might put a debt it

32:37

might put a serious debt in

32:39

our used parts like it At

32:41

yards like pick apart stuff like

32:43

that I will try not to

32:45

get on too long of a

32:47

rant here a soapbox Yeah, it's

32:49

more than the Mexican card that

32:51

we called in the Mexican trains.

32:53

Yeah, we got a Mexico we've

32:55

got a lot of Challenges in

32:57

every industry has its challenges. So

32:59

first of all, yes, he's he's

33:01

got it We're going south. Yeah,

33:03

they're heading somewhere But

33:06

they're going I got videos of

33:08

a lot of them. We were

33:10

talking about that at Christmas I

33:12

was like, yeah, where are these

33:14

coming from? Yeah, and it's it's

33:16

almost Fun to watch the way

33:18

they hook them up and put

33:20

them all together. It's amazing. I'm

33:22

plenty of room. It's amazing They

33:24

make it. Yeah in some cases,

33:26

but the ingenuity I will I

33:28

will say is quite high a

33:30

forward edge with a giant Superduty

33:32

intercooler on the front of it.

33:34

Yeah, the ingenuity to figure it

33:36

out It's league of flowers The

33:38

DOT is watching very closely now

33:40

Well, it's not illegal yet Usually,

33:42

right the DOT is watching very

33:44

closely for the activity of the

33:46

of multiple vehicle trains pulling together

33:48

It's not super specific But they

33:50

are pulling them over and there

33:53

are multiple safety violations being given

33:55

because they're trying to tell this

33:57

Activity but at the end of

33:59

the day, right you have hit

34:01

on something that our industry has been

34:03

challenged with for a long time. The majority of the salvage vehicles

34:05

in the country are sold at two

34:07

major auction companies that are big

34:09

corporate entities. There are people in

34:11

those companies that are friends of

34:13

mine, we deal with them, we

34:15

talk to them, it does create

34:17

a big challenge. They have a

34:19

huge international buyer base. and we're

34:21

not just talking about going south

34:24

out of North America, we're talking

34:26

about going over the ocean to

34:28

Europe, we're talking about going to

34:30

the Middle East, we're talking about

34:32

Eastern European countries, you name it.

34:34

We sit in our little humble

34:36

abode of South Dakota and we are

34:38

on the internet bidding on these vehicles

34:40

and you're watching the state or the

34:43

country pop up and it is literally

34:45

all over the world on a car

34:47

for sale that is sitting in...

34:49

Lennox, South Dakota, let's just say at

34:52

one of these these operations where they've

34:54

got a big storage lot. It's just

34:56

that is a huge change from what

34:58

it was what it used to be

35:00

and it does affect the availability of

35:02

salvage vehicles. It affects the prices

35:04

of salvage vehicles and it's just

35:06

something we've had to learn to

35:08

compete with. I've also got a

35:10

lot of really good customers that

35:12

buy parts from those vehicles and

35:15

take them back south of the

35:17

border with them. the majority of

35:19

those vehicles are getting

35:21

fixed in those foreign

35:23

countries. They're using labor

35:25

that is highly skilled, you

35:27

know, machinists that figure out

35:29

how to fix things. They

35:31

have got labor that doesn't cost

35:34

as much. You know, there's

35:36

groups putting these together for

35:38

not a lot of dollars.

35:40

And they would not probably

35:42

pass our a rigorous safety

35:44

inspection. They may not have the

35:47

airbag systems put back in place.

35:49

They may not have the antelog

35:51

breaks working when they're done,

35:53

but they're creating affordable

35:56

transportation in their country

35:59

where they can't. apparently get

36:01

enough of it. My one friend

36:03

that imports into Poland that I've

36:05

met, he just said, we don't

36:07

have auto manufacturers there. And so

36:09

they're bringing this stuff in and

36:11

everything in. They're figuring out how

36:13

to fix it. So it is

36:15

a, you did hit a nail

36:17

on the head, it is creating

36:19

a challenge. I'm not alone in

36:22

our industry, but I'm gonna be

36:24

the president of our trade association

36:26

here in 10 months now or

36:28

something like that. And these are

36:30

the types of issues that we.

36:32

monitor all the time and we

36:34

pay attention to and I'm glad

36:36

you I'm glad you asked the

36:38

question. Yeah, to me it's a

36:40

lot like cash for clunkers as

36:42

far as taking vehicles off the

36:45

road. I will just tell you

36:47

that it's very difficult to buy

36:49

a Toyota Camry, Avalon, Honda Accord,

36:51

you know. You there's some certain

36:53

vehicles that is just very very

36:55

difficult to buy them because of

36:57

the the competition market the competition

36:59

pushing the market on them Wow,

37:01

okay. Well, hopefully it's not going

37:03

to be like New Zealand where

37:05

they're cut a half of good

37:08

ends together and and sell it

37:10

like it was new. Well, there's

37:12

plenty of export things that happen

37:14

that are not pretty I going

37:16

into these foreign countries. I can

37:18

tell you there's some things that

37:20

are not pretty that go that

37:22

go into containers that are that

37:24

are being put back together in

37:26

other countries. There's no doubt about

37:28

it. Warren, thanks very much for

37:31

the call. 866-594-4.5. That's the number

37:33

to reach us here at the

37:35

under the hood show. Let me

37:37

check the chat here. We've got

37:39

a question coming in from Dan.

37:41

I have a 2000 Silverado with

37:43

P0446. And the only time it

37:45

comes on. is on a full

37:47

tank of gas, where do I

37:49

start? Well, that again is that

37:51

evaporative emissions system problem, and if

37:54

it's got a full tank of

37:56

gas, it's having... problems with the

37:58

vent system in there. It probably

38:00

needs a new purge valve and

38:02

possibly a vent valve. But we

38:04

had a purge valve call earlier

38:06

with some issues. But yeah, purge

38:08

valves and vent valves are usually

38:10

the problem when you have a

38:12

full tank of gas and there's

38:14

a problem with it running poorly

38:17

like right after you fuel it

38:19

or you are driving it with

38:21

a full tank of gas and

38:23

you start having the issue. Or

38:25

if you have recently had work

38:27

done with a fuel pump replaced

38:29

and one of the hard plastic

38:31

lines gets damaged during that process,

38:33

you always have to be aware

38:35

of that or not properly attached

38:37

if they remove the fuel tank.

38:40

I'm always suspect about that. And

38:42

on some vehicles, if it's gotten

38:44

bad enough where you are and

38:46

this isn't, we talk about this,

38:48

it's not like it's all the

38:50

time thing, but if you overfuel.

38:52

and over click, click, click, click,

38:54

click. Eventually you'll put enough raw

38:56

fuel into the system that your

38:58

canister, it's a vapor canister that

39:00

has like charcoal grown up inside

39:03

it would be the best way

39:05

to put it, because that's usually

39:07

what it is when you cut

39:09

them open. But if they get

39:11

too much raw fuel in them,

39:13

then they just can't breathe. And

39:15

you've got to replace that canister.

39:17

That's usually the last thing that

39:19

goes. It's got

39:21

to get pretty extreme for that to

39:24

happen. Let's say you're at a gas

39:26

station and the gas station you're at,

39:28

the pump itself is running really slow.

39:31

And it starts to like, and just

39:33

right from the gate, it starts clicking

39:35

off. And then you're on it, you

39:38

know, and you kind of go slow

39:40

and it's filling the thing slow. And

39:42

then you step away and I step

39:44

up to the pump and it clicks

39:47

off. Should you freak out on me?

39:49

Even though you've done it five times

39:51

in the last 30 seconds when I

39:54

do it the sixth time Should you

39:56

overreact and yell at me? I just

39:58

want to know where your gauge is

40:01

at is it? I don't know. Have

40:03

you just put, if I look at

40:05

your, why did you yell at me

40:08

when that happens? You just put in

40:10

five gallons. Do you remember that? When

40:12

we stopped on our way to the

40:15

NASCAR race and we went into the,

40:17

I don't. I'm sure it happened, I

40:19

just don't. We stopped and you, what

40:21

was funny was we stopped to get

40:24

gas and the pump was really slow

40:26

and it was clicking off and we

40:28

were on E. As you can imagine,

40:31

we were white knuckling it kind of

40:33

kind of to the. which is what

40:35

you do when you're on a road

40:38

trip. Yep. And did it last week.

40:40

It was really slow and it was

40:42

taking a while and then so you

40:45

had restarted it and I was standing

40:47

there and it went again and I

40:49

restarted it and you went, what? Oh,

40:51

and you kind of were like, oh,

40:54

wait, yeah, this is how it goes

40:56

here. But then you would, I think

40:58

you had talked to the manager of

41:01

the and it was a gas station

41:03

that they kind of just let not.

41:05

It wasn't open the whole time, but

41:08

when NASCAR and some issues were around

41:10

big events, they would open it. Yeah.

41:12

That can't be good, right? No, you

41:15

wouldn't confuse people. Yeah. Confuse people. Can't

41:17

have that. 866-594-150. Let's talk to Mike

41:19

in Oklahoma. Mike, you're on the end

41:22

of the hood show. What can we

41:24

do for you? per project this week

41:26

couple projects on my 2002 Jeep Liberty

41:28

with the 37 this weekend I did

41:31

have a remaining engine put in about

41:33

20,000 some miles ago so I'm trying

41:35

to keep this thing up well as

41:38

well as I can so I had

41:40

the infamous leaky of valve covers on

41:42

it so that was my main project

41:45

but while I was in there I've

41:47

flushed the radiator, changed the upper and

41:49

lower houses, put a motor red thermostat

41:52

in it, you know, all the good

41:54

stuff there. But again, like while I

41:56

was in there, I changed the crank

41:58

shaft position sense. I had the battery

42:01

negative post unhooked.

42:04

Everything went fine, ran,

42:06

ran fine when I

42:08

started it, drove it

42:11

a little bit around

42:13

town and turned up there

42:15

was a little fun, if

42:17

you will, engine light came

42:20

on and I got the

42:22

P.O. 320 code in it. So

42:24

I checked things over,

42:26

decided I'm going to

42:28

go back with. The original I

42:30

put it put it back in

42:33

of course took the battery post

42:35

off again negative cable

42:37

rather and Well, it's come

42:39

back again. So I don't know

42:42

what now. I'm not going to drive

42:44

it. I've got it in the

42:46

garage. I've actually had the

42:49

negative post But I keep

42:51

saying post the cable off of

42:53

it overnight, but any suggestions

42:55

On that, even though I

42:58

put the original back in,

43:00

I don't know what direction to

43:02

go next. Of course, I've got

43:04

a scanner, so I cleared

43:06

the code, but I thought something

43:09

that was going to be

43:11

pretty simple straightforward is

43:13

kind of turned out

43:15

the other direction for

43:17

me. So maybe I thought maybe it

43:20

was the ends, you know, where

43:22

we're plugged in to the actual.

43:24

sensor itself, maybe, you know,

43:26

I know they make kits for

43:29

those too, but, and I was

43:31

going to get some contact

43:33

cleaner to break the ends,

43:35

I haven't done that. So,

43:38

kind of looked for some

43:40

advice from my next step.

43:42

Yeah, he's officially guilty of

43:44

over-reparing. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. That's

43:46

me. Chris would never be

43:48

in this situation. No way.

43:50

No, not a town. It

43:52

definitely could be a problem

43:54

with that, with the connector

43:56

on the end. We put

43:58

those in. all the time, they

44:01

make those connectors just for this reason,

44:03

because they fail often. So sometimes just

44:05

the act of unplugging them and plugging

44:07

them back in causes problems. So I

44:10

would say, you could try that for

44:12

sure and see if that helps. and

44:14

make sure there's no, when you, where

44:17

that sensor, when you put that back

44:19

in, put the original in, make sure

44:21

there's nothing metal collecting on the end

44:23

of it for some reason, or the

44:26

hole you plugged it into, it doesn't

44:28

have a big watt of grease or

44:30

something in there that's blocking that signal.

44:32

Okay, all right. So I picked, you

44:35

know, a sensor that was, you know,

44:37

basically suggested, well, I thought about it,

44:39

if it kind of continues, I try

44:41

these, I go with a mobarbar sensor,

44:44

but... Sure. I didn't really think to

44:46

be that particular, but I think that's

44:48

maybe my other option. I might go

44:50

down the road to do that. Is

44:53

there any... I think I know the

44:55

answer, but I just want to ask

44:57

for sure, Russ, is there any sort

44:59

of a learn to that sensor? Not

45:02

on the Chrysler. It's automatic. Should it

45:04

be automatic? Yeah. I actually had a...

45:06

situation too the other morning that it

45:09

started fine I shut it off because

45:11

I was getting ready to go to

45:13

work and it cranked and cranked it

45:15

wouldn't start that's when I took off

45:18

the negative post again waited about a

45:20

minute or two put it back on

45:22

and it started so that's kind of

45:24

I'm glad you kind of brought that

45:27

up but I didn't really think or

45:29

see anything on the internet about a

45:31

learning. It'll start on cold. If it's

45:33

got a problem with that, it'll start

45:36

on a cold start, but once it

45:38

goes into closed loop and then you

45:40

shut it off and it won't restart,

45:42

it won't re-crank. You have to wait

45:45

until it's completely cold. Oh, okay. Okay.

45:47

Because it's trying to look for both

45:49

those sensors when it's warm, and if

45:51

it sees one missing, it won't work.

45:54

Mike, thanks very much for the call.

45:56

Good luck. Can I ask him one

45:58

more question? Yeah, sure? How'd those valve

46:00

covers? turn out? Actually, so far it's

46:03

so good. I wasn't, actually I kind

46:05

of seemed to have a little more

46:07

problem with the driver's side. I did

46:10

the passing, even though I had to

46:12

take off, you know, the hoses and

46:14

the airbox and whatnot and the coolant

46:16

reservoir, but it worked that right. All

46:19

right, well make sure we got some

46:21

win out of this. He's got good-looking

46:23

radiator hoses and no oil leaks. Let's

46:25

get a little bit of a win

46:28

out of this. Mike, thanks very much

46:30

for the call. On the chat, Dan

46:32

said, thanks though. Overfueling was my guess

46:34

as long as I keep it three

46:37

quarters of a tank and under, I

46:39

don't get that PO 446 code. So

46:41

that's what it is, right? Good chance.

46:43

Real good chance. All right. That's about,

46:46

go ahead. I was just going to

46:48

say, for our local audience, I want

46:50

to thank the folks at Motor Market

46:52

magazine. They requested an opportunity to do

46:55

a story on our company and myself,

46:57

and it ended up being a really

46:59

good article. It includes a lot about

47:02

the radio show. There's a nice picture

47:04

of us in the new studio that

47:06

Russ built. So if you get a

47:08

chance here locally pick up the Motor

47:11

Market magazine, I've talked on the show

47:13

about my... Trans Am with 1900 actual

47:15

miles on it. They actually have a

47:17

picture of it on the cover. You'll

47:20

see a silver Trans Am on there.

47:22

How's that feel? It's kind of cool.

47:24

Yeah, I mean, I've only taken the

47:26

car out a few times. It's been

47:29

at one car show and and then

47:31

for this and so it's kind of

47:33

fun. But I'm real proud of the

47:35

people around me that have helped me

47:38

do what we do and the team

47:40

and our family and this is a

47:42

really good outline of So if you

47:44

get a chance locally pick up the

47:47

motor market and we'll see what you

47:49

think. Or at the motor market.com. There

47:51

you go. All right. This is the

47:53

after show very short today. We got

47:56

stuff to do so we're going to

47:58

not be on the after show. already

48:00

started doing stuff so really it's just

48:03

me and you now they're both on

48:05

their phones I was thinking trying to

48:07

get this streaming fixed on so we

48:09

have all of it the Babbitt thing

48:12

the Babbitt John Wayne Babbitt no the

48:14

Babbitt no the Babbitt no the Babbitt

48:16

what's the name of Bering yeah Babbitt

48:18

you got info we were talking about

48:20

that earlier and you and I did

48:22

you all of us did you go look

48:25

it up or did you get it up

48:27

or did you get it sent to you

48:29

get it sent to you? I threw a

48:31

term out and Babbitt bearings as Russ said,

48:34

I'm thinking old, they were last using automotive

48:36

in the 1950s. And so not, I wasn't

48:38

out of line, I just was dated.

48:40

Right. And they still use Babbitt

48:42

bearings in a lot of industrial

48:44

and small engine applications. Yeah, I

48:46

thought so. It's still a thing.

48:48

Yeah, you did. But what I

48:50

did find that was kind of

48:53

interesting and I just see if

48:55

I can bring it back up really

48:57

quick up really quick here. But

48:59

then it says, where was it? Anyway,

49:01

the patent on a Babbitt Baring said

49:03

it was like 89% 10%. It was

49:05

just really interesting, the

49:08

old patent on the Babbitt Baring.

49:10

I can't find it now, but anyway,

49:12

it was just quite interesting. Waskily

49:14

Babbitt. But yeah, I did use

49:16

a very old term. I liked

49:18

it. I'm fine with that. I

49:20

was proud of myself for pulling

49:23

it out and not saying

49:25

something completely wrong like rabbit

49:27

or rabbit or... Habiter.

49:29

Webbit. All right,

49:31

50:00

50:02

50:04

50:06

50:09

50:11

50:13
