1:11

ones right, stood let's get to

1:13

it. John, well, let's get to it!

1:15

Number 10. Sarah Einstein from episode

1:17

122, fluency now, the power of extensive the

1:20

power of extensive reading. I've

1:22

been feel like I've been studying

1:24

Mandarin for about, like, or seven years, so so

1:26

memory is not too great too great, but

1:28

see one time time. This was really

1:30

fun. I had the opportunity to

1:32

speak Mandarin with to speak work. with Jaycho

1:35

I'm not familiar with him. Please help me forgive me. Okay,

1:37

so Jecho is

1:39

a very famous

1:41

Taiwanese singer famous Taiwanese

1:43

singer, songwriter. I think I know who

1:45

you're talking about talking us about this. Wow so

1:48

so I have Wow. Yeah,

1:50

so crush on a crush

1:52

I find him I find it

1:54

cool. cool. He's handsome. very

1:57

talented. talented. And yeah, this is like... which

1:59

is random operate. Unity because been studying

2:01

Mandarin for a few years, for a few

2:03

coming He coming on site onto Riot's This was a

2:05

couple of years ago, one of

2:07

our game was having a celebration, I

2:09

think it was Wild a celebration. I think was

2:12

think one of the teams heard

2:14

that the teams heard that I this big old

2:16

crush on him on him I could speak

2:18

some Mandarin. Mandarin. And so were like, would

2:20

you like to be of like of

2:22

like marketing materials? Like it wasn't YouTube,

2:24

but like a video for these

2:26

skins that we were making for for League

2:29

of Legends. I'll say, okay. Yeah, sign me up. I'm not

2:31

up. I not sheepish like I

2:33

will do my best but the

2:35

best tones But like I'm not

2:37

gonna miss this opportunity to

2:39

speak Mandarin with J. with Jaycho. So

2:41

he came on campus with like

2:43

his crew crew, which was just it

2:46

was so exciting and he was speaking

2:48

mostly Mandarin the whole time time,

2:50

his crew members were like

2:52

sometimes going in and out of

2:54

English. We were sitting in

2:56

the in the PC Cafe, is like very fond fond

2:58

sitting in the in the Cafe at

3:00

work me and like and of of his

3:03

co -workers like- His entourage, his entourage, it entourage.

3:05

It was supposedly one of his good friends.

3:07

We were playing the game and we

3:09

were speaking Mandarin with one another and he

3:11

was like... like- What? Where do you

3:14

speak? that's always the question. the question.

3:16

just really fun. just really fun and

3:18

And he And that I would be his

3:20

English teacher, and he would be my

3:22

Chinese teacher. be my Oh, this is so

3:24

cool. so fun. so I got to

3:26

tell show what my favorite song was of

3:28

his Mandarin, and then they and then they asked

3:30

if I would sing it. I I was

3:32

like, like. No way! Sing the song in

3:34

way. of the actual song in front

3:36

of the actual song right Yeah,

3:39

exactly. No, no, that's okay. I

3:41

also can't sing, so. But that was

3:43

so cool. We got But that was

3:45

so cool. got to tell

3:47

coworker and another co -worker at

3:49

the time, American and also American,

3:51

and he was studying us

3:53

so the two of us

3:55

were explaining to where the the

3:57

background of these skins came

3:59

from. from. Which was really cool. That's

4:01

a fun story. Sarah was wonderful

4:03

to talk to. She's super enthusiastic

4:05

about life. And I have to

4:08

admit, though, John, I don't actually

4:10

know Jay Cho any of his

4:12

songs. Oh, really? Actually, when I

4:14

first came to China back in

4:16

2000, Jay Cho was getting really

4:18

popular. And yeah, I actually really

4:20

liked his music. He was one

4:22

of the artists that was easier

4:24

for a non-Chinese person to get

4:27

into. And my wife was also

4:29

a big fan back in the

4:31

day, well, even before she was

4:33

my wife. So anyway, I'm a

4:35

fan of this Chinese singer. I

4:37

think he's pretty great. Well, I'm

4:39

sure he's got a lot of

4:41

great fans out there. You bet

4:43

he does. Number nine, Dave Landis

4:46

from episode 123, reframing the 10

4:48

worst Chinese learning tips. But there

4:50

was a saving grace in that

4:52

class. I picked up an old,

4:54

old copy of a German graded

4:56

reader. a German-graded reader, the thing

4:58

was really old. Wow. It started

5:00

out very simple, it had lots

5:02

of cognates in it, wrote, blau,

5:05

groan, vata, you know, these things

5:07

that sound like we have in

5:09

English. And little by little, they

5:11

weed you off the cognates and

5:13

integrated the more difficult German. And

5:15

I found myself reading German. Wow.

5:17

Eventually, I could read about... This

5:19

guy named Tiel Ewegan Spielberg. I

5:21

hope I said his name correctly,

5:24

it's been a while. But that

5:26

experience way back when I was

5:28

a young kid taught me that

5:30

graded readers were integral in the

5:32

learning languages. I gotta say Dave,

5:34

he's a great guy, he's a

5:36

big fan of manner companion, but

5:38

you know, I thought something that

5:40

was cool about this is that,

5:43

hey, you know, we talk a

5:45

lot about extensive reading, right? But

5:47

it works in all sorts of

5:49

languages. Yeah, actually me personally, I

5:51

never did a lot of graded

5:53

readers for Japanese back when I

5:55

was studying Japanese, but because as

5:57

I've mentioned before

6:00

I've been studying

6:02

I've been studying I

6:04

have just recently bought some

6:06

graded readers in Italian. readers in

6:08

Italian actually got them as a Christmas

6:10

present. as So I'm looking forward to go through

6:12

those So I'm looking forward myself the

6:14

power of for readers. the power

6:16

of it comes to learning Italian. when it

6:18

comes to and it can definitely work for you. it

6:21

can definitely work for you. Number

6:23

eight, Susan St. Denise, from How

6:25

To Increase Your Listening

6:28

Speed your listening speed. If there's thing people

6:30

should know about me know about

6:32

you if you if you give If you give me money. I'll

6:34

jump off a building. I'll take any

6:36

bet. I love it. love it. So my classmates found

6:38

this out about me They're like about give

6:40

you money if you like eat weird

6:42

stuff we'll give you money if you like eat weird stuff. teacher even

6:44

gets in on it. She's like I'll give you it.

6:46

dollars for like you that you eat if you

6:48

give proof that you did it. you eat if you give

6:50

me into it, I was like, oh, it's so

6:52

crazy what I'm gonna eat, but it actually was

6:54

all really good. so crazy what I'm for example. going on.

6:56

Delicious, it it tastes like Doritos,

6:59

I loved it. I The one thing

7:01

I didn't like I didn't like was silkworm pupa.

7:03

It's a bug gusher, is a a that was

7:05

That I didn't like didn't, didn't like that. the

7:07

one tax my parents get is

7:09

a video of me at this night

7:11

market, me at this 16 years old, surrounded

7:13

by a bunch of a bunch of men

7:15

are like Channing going eat it, eat it. And

7:17

I'm in the middle of the

7:19

crowd with this giant scorpion. Oh, it

7:21

was Oh, the size of my hand. hand.

7:23

huge. it no. And I drop the

7:26

whole thing in my mouth a whole

7:28

I eat it. And that's the... and

7:30

I eat it and that's the only parents get

7:32

for me the whole time.

7:34

I'm in China whole time I'm in China

7:36

is a pretty funny story. Ah,

7:38

there is no shortage of

7:41

weird food food in China. China You You

7:43

know, I I actually ate a scorpion

7:45

on my first trip to China. I bet you

7:47

I bet you did, Jared. That feels like a very

7:49

Jared thing to do. do. Yep, we were We

7:51

were in Beijing. We went to that

7:54

night market there and had a scorpion

7:56

kind of of tasted like popcorn. Popcorn, huh?

7:58

you ever had one? had one? Yeah

8:00

Jared I've had scorpions I've had fried grasshoppers

8:02

I've had ants can't say I really loved

8:04

any of it but you know I'm willing

8:06

to try some stuff so yeah I've had

8:09

maybe not every bug maybe not spiders but

8:11

I've had a lot of that stuff. Well

8:13

there's still time. Number seven Mike Kennedy from

8:15

episode 142 characters cocktails and karaoke how Mike

8:18

Kennedy blended passion and Chinese. But I would

8:20

go there on these Monday nights or whatever,

8:22

and it was just a lot of fun

8:24

to experience talking with people about what they

8:26

were interested and what I was interested in.

8:29

And there's one time that I thought was

8:31

pretty cool from that trip where there was

8:33

a karaoke bar in Taipei. Before I went,

8:35

I asked some people on Reddit. Where? can

8:38

I go sing karaoke in Taipei but not

8:40

in like a private room like somewhere where

8:42

they have a stage like an open mic

8:44

or something right exactly and so I got

8:46

a few recommendations of some places so I

8:49

went to this one spot and I went

8:51

to the bar and sat down and had

8:53

a drink and then I said hey I

8:55

heard this is this is where I can

8:57

sing some Chinese songs so I want to

9:00

sing a song and they were like oh

9:02

we really only want people to sing American

9:04

songs here were not really interested in Chinese.

9:06

I was like, oh, you know, I wanted

9:09

to sing this, I think it's from the

9:11

90s, song by David Tao, called Shao Jin,

9:13

the Koonian, or Shao, and I requested, I

9:15

was like, I want to sing this song,

9:17

and so then the DJ was also the

9:20

owner of the place, he was like, okay,

9:22

I'll play. So then I got up and

9:24

sang this song and kind of everybody in

9:26

the bar, stopped what they were watching me

9:29

and there. shooting a video of it and

9:31

all this sort of stuff. Oh yeah, I

9:33

forgot to mention before that started. One of

9:35

the reasons he said we can't do it

9:37

is I have this issue where the Chinese

9:40

characters show up too small on the screen.

9:42

So you can only do the English ones.

9:44

I was like, oh no, I know all

9:46

the world. And he was like, really?

9:49

Yeah, he kind of almost felt of

9:51

almost felt like he

9:53

had to do it

9:55

at that point because

9:57

I He was know all

10:00

the words for the

10:02

song. all the words of the

10:04

in the end, he

10:06

posted it on the

10:09

social media and said, and

10:11

said, I forget refrain in

10:13

the chorus of the

10:15

song in the chorus of the song is

10:17

booming by. by, so he said

10:20

multiple times response on the video, the

10:22

video, like, yep, booming by. I I also don't

10:24

understand how do you sing Chinese

10:26

songs so well? I don't understand

10:28

why why. I hadn't even drank that

10:30

much and I still I still Chinese

10:32

music. When I tell myself I'm

10:34

never gonna play Chinese music play Chinese

10:36

music framing this up, this is

10:38

a bar in Taiwan with Chinese people

10:40

singing English songs you are you are

10:42

a English speaker showing up and

10:44

singing a Chinese song. So yeah,

10:46

it sounds like. And that was a pretty cool

10:48

experience. was. I cool experience. And I think

10:50

that was actually my second night there. I

10:52

So then I posted that on my

10:54

social media all of and all of my friends

10:56

back in the States like thought it was

10:58

pretty funny that. I'd literally just gotten there and

11:01

already was already was posted on social media

11:03

and stuff like that. and stuff like hilarious.

11:05

That sounds like a great experience. a

11:07

great was a lot of fun. it

11:09

was a lot of fun. Ah, good old Yeah, totally

11:11

a classic karaoke experience. This

11:13

one's really good. really I

11:15

gotta say, one thing about about karaoke

11:17

is it's a lot It's a lot better when people

11:19

can actually sing. Yeah, and Yeah, evidently

11:21

he can can sing. John, I'm I'm still waiting to

11:23

hear you sing. you sing. Well Jared I'm afraid

11:26

you're going to be waiting a

11:28

long time waiting a long time because really

11:30

not one of the things I do for other

11:32

people. I do for other people. Number

11:34

six. Taha Shibek, episode

11:36

110, how your how your

11:38

personality changes in another language.

11:40

So I spent about a spent about

11:42

a year at the going the classes and

11:45

by the the end of the

11:47

second semester, there was this speaking

11:49

competition for foreigners in for foreigners in

11:52

Jiangsu province. And no one. and

11:54

the university said that they were

11:56

willing to participate, except me. Yeah. me.

11:58

I I wanted to participate. I went my

12:00

luck, why not? why not? Yeah, a shot. I'm

12:02

a foreigner. a I spoke some Chinese at

12:04

the time, I would say at the time, I would

12:06

say HSK-4. just give it a shot. give

12:08

it a shot. I reached semi-finals. Wow, that's amazing. It was

12:10

It was cool. It was cool. Obviously, like

12:12

my teachers helped him with the script.

12:15

with a And I spent about like

12:17

two to three weeks three weeks memorizing my

12:19

script, like going through it and

12:21

trying to memorize it. And I think

12:23

trying to memorize it. the golden plates in Nanjing. So I So

12:25

I did some research for for three

12:27

weeks. And I went to the

12:29

competition in there and I got to

12:31

the I got to some was my first

12:33

experience my first experience, though. You out it to

12:36

the finals and it sounds like it

12:38

to well. and it some sort

12:40

of a reward, well. And as

12:42

in China offered me a in

12:44

China discount on any any master's

12:47

wanted from the the university. Wow. That's

12:49

amazing. That's amazing. So I did

12:51

my my as well at well at the

12:53

Instead of paying like instead of paying like

12:55

year, year, I only had to pay

12:57

to ,000. That's great. great. I gotta I've

12:59

got to say all are all sorts of

13:01

speech competitions in many different places, but you

13:03

know, this one's pretty cool. one's pretty

13:05

got a serious discount on his

13:07

tuition there in China. there in China.

13:10

Nice, a discount in tuition is

13:12

always a good thing. a good many how

13:14

competitions have you won, have you won, John?

13:16

Well Jared, there's there's that famous

13:18

saying, you miss all the shots you

13:20

don't take. and speech competitions are not

13:22

really my thing, so I haven't won

13:25

any. won any. going to guess

13:27

gonna guess time. time. Well, that's that's not what

13:29

I'm going to use my time

13:31

left for, I'm afraid to say. I'm afraid

13:33

to say. Number five, Cleopatra

13:36

Episode 138, Episode

13:38

138 Traveler to Fluent Speaker,

13:40

Cleopatra's Chinese language

13:43

Adventure. It It was a very

13:45

interesting transitional year in my life in

13:47

my life though I had been going

13:49

to the US every single year,

13:52

seeing my family, seeing friends, I had

13:54

no idea what was going on

13:56

in the was I thought I in the U.S.

13:58

I thought I had no idea. out of the

14:00

of the loop. somehow I had

14:02

become not cool anymore. didn't know I didn't

14:04

know any pop culture. I didn't

14:06

know any references, I I didn't know anything.

14:08

So it was just a really weird

14:10

year. And that was the end the

14:12

- end of the Trump which was

14:15

why. which was wild and it

14:17

the edge of edge of COVID. So that's when

14:19

I came back. weird time weird time

14:21

to come back, yeah. moved when I

14:23

moved back to the States as well.

14:25

And there's a concept of of culture

14:27

shock and it sounds to me

14:29

that to a little bit of what

14:31

you experienced. of what you so I would

14:33

say, for me, it was definitely a it was

14:35

shock. a reverse culture shock. One, the

14:37

way I left and how I came

14:39

back. was, it's not not that I was

14:41

a completely different person, but my mindset

14:43

was completely shifted. was then from

14:45

a religious standpoint. from a converted

14:47

to Islam in China,

14:50

to Islam in China. And so. I I

14:52

was now a wearing Muslim black

14:54

woman in New in New

14:56

York is a which is different

14:58

experience and living in California or

15:01

living in Florida Florida, or being

15:03

a black American. so so

15:05

was a complete culture shock

15:07

shock the way people interact

15:09

with me is very different different,

15:12

actually. Really? Yeah, it's completely different. Well,

15:14

for one, I have been told

15:16

all my life I look very African.

15:18

very I am African I an extent. like

15:20

I'm an -American, so I'm African,

15:22

but I'm not African by

15:24

culture I'm nationality. by anything like

15:27

that. But because I wear hijab

15:29

that. I look even more African.

15:31

I look even more all right now I

15:33

have interesting foreign experience. So

15:35

so people assume I'm a

15:37

foreigner, I'm a almost everywhere, even

15:39

in New York. even in New

15:42

- Especially in New York, so. I get

15:44

stopped New York. for directions all

15:46

the time asked for then as

15:48

soon as I open my mouth They're like wait, where are

15:50

you from? I'm like oh, I'm from Florida and they're just like

15:52

they're parents? I'm like, you

15:54

from? I'm like, oh, Florida. Florida.

15:57

And so it's just a very very

15:59

interesting experience. I'm like, all

16:01

of you talking to someone, they're like,

16:03

your English is like very good. I'm

16:05

like, I would hope so. I'm American.

16:07

They're just like, but you look so

16:09

exotic. And I'm like, no, I'm not

16:11

exotic. I'm just a black American. And

16:14

it's just a very interesting experience the

16:16

last few years, like encountering that and

16:18

encountering how people treat me and the

16:20

differences there. And I used to always

16:22

hear my Asian American friends say, I

16:24

really hate when people ask me, where

16:26

are you from? And I never quite

16:28

understood that until now I get, where

16:31

are you from? No, like really, where

16:33

are you from? But what about your

16:35

parents? Yeah, they're not sure what to

16:37

ask me because obviously I'm black. So

16:39

they don't know what to ask. But

16:41

they're just like, but like your parents

16:43

are from? I'm like, no, I'm an

16:45

African American convert. And they're just like,

16:48

oh, yeah, sure. Yeah, it's fascinating. You

16:50

know Cleopatra's story I thought was pretty

16:52

interesting because you know we talk about

16:54

culture shock that's something that's kind of

16:56

well known but we don't talk a

16:58

lot about reverse culture shock. Ah reverse

17:00

culture shock yeah and I think what

17:02

made this story more interesting too is

17:05

how she changed her religion during that

17:07

time and was wearing a hijab. So

17:09

many things can happen when you go

17:11

abroad right like you never know what

17:13

you're gonna learn what kinds of people

17:15

you're gonna meet and how that's gonna

17:17

affect the course of the rest of

17:20

the rest of your life. Yeah, it's

17:22

so interesting how these different dynamics play

17:24

out. Number four, Ari Smith, episode 130,

17:26

the making of a YouTube star, Ari

17:28

Smith's transformation into Shiyama. And then, like,

17:30

I decided to try one last video.

17:32

You know, I went out with my

17:34

friend filming and it was just like

17:37

a kind of like a log of

17:39

me, like buying groceries in Chinatown and

17:41

we filmed it. And I was like,

17:43

man, this this video is so stupid.

17:45

Like, who's gonna watch this dumb piece

17:47

of shit? buying groceries like vegetables and

17:49

trying to tell like why would I

17:51

even care about this? You know, and

17:54

my friend like it was so boring

17:56

to me. my friend

17:58

was like, was know

18:00

what? know what, just it it, whatever man,

18:02

just like trying these things these things, like,

18:04

not post it? I was like, I'm I'll post

18:06

it you know Anyway, so I was like still, while

18:08

brushing up software, like I posted it it,

18:11

And then you know, it flops, it's as I expected, it's

18:13

dumb video. it's like, week goes by, and then,

18:15

and I'm checking my phone, I see that

18:17

the video is 100 ,000 views. like, it's like,

18:19

interesting. it's haven't had a video get 100

18:21

,000 views in a while. like, it's that's pretty

18:23

cool. like, of weeks go by, it's like, it's

18:25

like, it's like, it's like, it's views. I'm like,

18:27

it's like, it, what? That's weird. Yeah. Then like

18:29

another week goes by, by, a million

18:31

views. views. I'm like. like, whoa, this is

18:33

this is really strange. And look the

18:36

comments and they're all in English. they're

18:38

all in English. Like watching me

18:40

watching me by like Bachchoy in Chinatown? Wait a second.

18:42

So what a second, so here though

18:44

is that gathering here though is

18:46

that what you're saying all your

18:48

all your videos were targeted

18:51

towards. Chinese speaking people,

18:53

Chinese speaking natives. Right? And now you have have

18:55

speakers of -native speakers of the Chinese

18:57

who are watching your videos that

18:59

right? Yeah, I that right? until I

19:01

mean, up until that moment, like

19:03

the vast majority of my

19:05

videos had been viewed by, been viewed by people

19:08

in China. people in China, they would go viral, know,

19:10

and occasionally they would go viral but

19:12

they would all go viral in China

19:14

money. So I didn't make any money. doesn't was

19:16

like, all right, it doesn't matter if it

19:19

goes viral in China I I can't make

19:21

a career out of this, sorry. Sorry. So, this

19:23

video. video... was going viral in America.

19:25

And when you go when you go viral in

19:27

America, you could like you could actually start to make

19:29

some money. I was looking at this and I

19:31

was like, and I cool. But also I was kind

19:33

of confused was kind of I was like, I

19:35

are Americans watching this? know, because

19:37

for me, it was so strange strange because

19:39

Like, this was the most boring ordinary

19:42

thing to me. me. And so I never so I

19:44

never tried this this type of video because... it

19:46

was just like dumb. I was like, like,

19:48

this is so boring and ordinary. ordinary. But

19:50

what I I was that two

19:52

Americans to It was

19:54

fascinating to see

19:57

a white guy guy buying

19:59

groceries since... Lord Chinese! Like that

20:01

that was interesting, you know, to

20:03

to people. was funny and cool

20:05

and heartwarming. so I tried

20:07

doing some more of these videos.

20:09

some more I made one where I went

20:11

into a nail salon. where I went into

20:13

a nail salon and started

20:16

my nails done. done. I'm just

20:18

like a white guy guy

20:20

in a Chinese nail salon my my

20:22

nails done. then I And then

20:24

I start speaking to her in

20:26

Chinese. and she's totally shocked. And then I

20:28

post this video and the first day, day,

20:30

I was doing some photo shoot with

20:32

my friend and they were in the car

20:34

together and he's like, and then we're like, car Do

20:37

you know that video you posted

20:39

this morning you know that million views

20:41

right now? has eight million

20:43

like, right now? And I'm like, what? Eight

20:45

million views. so And

20:47

so then I started. together

20:50

two and two together oh, being like,

20:52

I actually So have actually don't have

20:54

to be a engineer anymore. Like I actually.

20:57

Make a a career. right and so

20:59

of this, like a very And so,

21:01

version of the story a very abbreviated version

21:03

of the story, and there's a lot

21:05

of more twists and turns there, but because it

21:07

feels like I like this story because it

21:09

feels like it kind of pulls back the

21:11

curtain a little bit on some of those

21:14

videos. see, I seen this of people have seen

21:16

this video or the videos that has put out there Yeah,

21:18

I put out there. have had I think

21:20

I might have had some of his videos

21:22

recommended to me randomly on YouTube before knew who

21:24

he was. was John, I'm still waiting for you

21:26

to make these types of videos. types of I

21:28

don't really I those kinds of videos.

21:30

of man, you could be the next

21:32

YouTube star or something. next YouTube star

21:35

more on stuff like, you know, learning Chinese

21:37

like I have a video about. like I

21:39

have maybe that'll go viral. Maybe

21:41

Yeah, I'm not really holding my breath Yeah, I'm not really

21:44

holding my breath, though. Number three, Nick

21:46

Anderson, episode 120, five

21:48

tips on taking better notes

21:50

for learning Chinese. Chinese. At the

21:52

time, this was in in 2013,

21:54

2014, much not much Mandarin popping

21:56

up in TV shows, but

21:59

it started happening. Yeah. And through this

22:01

style, like Coach Agent, brought on to

22:03

several sets for film and TV, some

22:05

of the TV shows were even, you

22:08

know, they're eight episodes long, and so

22:10

there's Mandarin happening in each episode, so

22:12

I'm really getting a chance to develop

22:15

this relationship with the actors and actresses

22:17

and getting to know them, and it

22:19

is so much fun. I think a

22:22

very different way of teaching someone. They

22:24

don't need to know what they're saying.

22:26

They just need to know how to

22:29

say it. I did a movie called

22:31

Arrival. Amy Adams plays this kind of

22:33

linguistics professor. It's a fantastic movie. Really

22:36

enjoy that. Oh my god, unreal, such

22:38

a good story. The way that Mandarin

22:40

plays into it, if you can remember,

22:43

is almost like the end of the

22:45

film, but also the kind of pinnacle

22:47

moment. Yeah, yeah, there's the Chinese general

22:50

there and you whisper something to him,

22:52

right? Right, right, right. It was really

22:54

interesting. They gave me a few lines

22:57

to translate and the lines changed almost

22:59

every hour it felt like. It was

23:01

just... Oh really? Yeah, because of the

23:04

weight of that, they didn't know what

23:06

Amy needed to say in that moment.

23:08

And so it changed quite a bit.

23:11

Oh, so the script wasn't fully determined.

23:13

at the onset of the movie, right?

23:15

Absolutely. So they're still trying to figure

23:18

this out, what is this crux thing

23:20

she's going to be saying as milk,

23:22

right? Wow, really. That's film, right? Film

23:25

is this kind of wild industry of

23:27

everything is changing, everything's last minute, and

23:29

you have no idea what's going to

23:32

happen. At least that's been my experience

23:34

in it. Although, working in this case,

23:36

we're translating everything up to the day

23:39

that it's being filmed. It's very dramatic,

23:41

right? It's very like last minute. So

23:43

we're changing these lines for Amy Adams

23:46

constantly until we finally decide what she's

23:48

going to... to say, do

23:50

the do the translation,

23:53

and now we're

23:55

on set, and Amy's

23:57

trying to learn

24:00

these lines. learn As

24:02

you know, As you know,

24:04

tonal, pronunciation, it's a

24:07

bit of a

24:09

challenge to pick up

24:11

immediately. up Working with

24:13

her was great. It was

24:16

so much fun. so She

24:18

killed it, and it was

24:20

a long day on set,

24:22

but and a fun, intense moment.

24:24

such an That's such an awesome story.

24:26

I love this movie, too. too. Yeah, good

24:28

story. And I got to say, I I

24:30

remember watching this movie in the in the

24:32

theater and like trying trying to remember what he

24:34

said. I didn't really know all the words all

24:36

the which the the had said in this movie

24:38

in Chinese, but I went back and looked at

24:41

him like, but I pretty cool. But at it. I'm like, oh,

24:43

an awesome moment in the movie. a my memory

24:45

for that kind of thing isn't great, the but.

24:47

Yeah, my It is really cool when

24:49

you need Chinese but it suddenly cool when

24:51

you have it. and no one

24:53

expects it, it's fun. one think it

24:55

just goes to show fun. like of these

24:57

unique opportunities that you can have that

24:59

you you really learn Chinese. really learn do

25:01

check out the video. We've got a link in the

25:03

show notes. got a link in the

25:05

show notes. Number two, happy, Episode

25:07

132 Finding Your Voice

25:09

in Chinese, happy's Melody.

25:12

Okay, well I I got to hear

25:14

a little bit more about this more about this story,

25:17

K, because a video that went viral had a

25:19

social media. I don't know how viral it

25:21

went on the on side, but it definitely

25:23

hit me. know sure it went pretty good,

25:25

on on the China side. it I actually

25:27

got it here. How about let's listen to

25:29

it, all right? pretty us where this is

25:31

at real quick. Tell us, I give the

25:34

setting of this before we listen How about,

25:36

let's so to it. I have been to

25:38

a total of maybe like to six six

25:40

shejean so this was going to

25:42

be the latest one. The very

25:44

first one was while I was

25:47

studying abroad in Shanghai, in Shanghai, so 2017.

25:49

2018, came Xie Zhitian came to San

25:51

Jose only I was the only

25:53

foreigner in the audience and he

25:55

saw me, so I stood up

25:57

and then talked to him in in

25:59

Shanghai knees. Right? So, Shanghai, what? No way!

26:01

No, it's a hanging. Yeah. No, ho

26:04

pashion was what I said to him,

26:06

right? Wow. And so he remembered the,

26:08

then this past year, I went to

26:10

two of his concerts inside of China,

26:13

and then this past month, I went

26:15

to San Jose again, five years, like

26:17

six years later, and got to have

26:19

the second row seating. Yeah. When he

26:21

first started the concert, he said, all

26:24

of the boys make some noise. All

26:26

of the girls make some noise. All

26:28

of the foreigners. And I'm like, wow!

26:30

What's one? I'm a forder, right? And

26:33

he's like, oh, hey, I remember you.

26:35

And I was like, oh, you remember

26:37

me? I remember you too. And he

26:39

was like, oh yeah, you were here

26:41

last time. And I was like, yeah,

26:44

thank you so much for coming back.

26:46

And he's like, thank you so much.

26:48

And I said, blah, but, geez, what

26:50

sound clean, you tongue? How you want

26:52

to sing with you? Yes, but this

26:55

time I want to sing with you.

26:57

He's like, oh, okay. Then I will

26:59

be having a time when I go

27:01

around and singing with people. So I

27:04

will see you there. I was like,

27:06

okay, sounds good. Okay, so he's walking

27:08

down, dial scene. There he is, and

27:10

I've been able to come up to

27:12

the very front, and he's like, four

27:15

in a girl, see you again. And

27:17

then we're singing together, and I'm still

27:19

stuck in, in harmony, so I'm harmonizing

27:21

with him, he's like, oop. And so

27:23

I like point at him, I was

27:26

like, your turn. And then he brings

27:28

me back to what we were singing,

27:30

because I even messed up. You sound

27:32

so beautiful, I mean, you have an

27:35

amazing voice and that's, I mean, just

27:37

quieted the crowd. Everyone's just like, wow.

27:39

Thank you, Doya. This part is definitely

27:41

how everything came together and I was

27:43

able to really like express my love

27:46

and appreciation of just. him

27:48

as an artist and it

27:50

was so... He puts was

27:52

puts that ring on

27:55

your finger and I'm

27:57

really hear about this.

27:59

about this. and then

28:01

the last note note

28:03

what were you thinking?

28:06

Is that that

28:08

last note you're just

28:10

like? you're just like? I

28:12

blacked out out afterwards, like I like

28:14

I couldn't even they didn't

28:16

was like it was actually

28:18

reality, but I was thinking

28:20

like I you that he thought that

28:22

he wasn't going to give me the

28:25

second part of that song and that that

28:27

he was just going to cut it

28:29

off it off. there. I I was like well

28:31

I already messed up the lyrics, but

28:33

I got to like to like his hand hand

28:35

and he also gave me a hug. So

28:37

I think I've already like pretty good,

28:39

but it was really that last last bit

28:41

where I got got to. you shot. Yeah. I mean, I

28:43

saw you got to I saw I've to that

28:45

I've watched that video a few number

28:47

of times and it's like the moment.

28:49

the moment. I don't think there could

28:51

have been a better point for

28:53

him to come by during that song

28:55

that you seized it. You nailed it.

28:57

it. Right? And I wonder how much of that

28:59

was intentional, because while I was in the

29:02

second row, it's always been a dream

29:04

of mine to be able to sing with

29:06

with And every time I go to his

29:08

concerts, to I am so giddy at just

29:10

the fact that he's there in front

29:12

of me and I am getting to sing

29:14

harmony with his voice with his voice live the

29:17

same time, even though I'm not on on

29:19

But with everything that I am, I would

29:21

love to be on that stage with him.

29:23

So I think that in that sense,

29:25

I've always been different than a lot of

29:27

fans. probably. than a lot of fans probably.

29:29

Not a lot of people want to

29:31

be on that stage singing, right? But

29:34

you do. that stage I really But you And

29:36

so, ever since would do. And so the first

29:38

time seeing him. the first time seeing

29:40

his on stage in It's always

29:42

it's always dream of mine mine. be

29:44

able to be on stage or

29:46

sing with him. So this was an absolute

29:48

dream come true. And it also

29:50

felt very just kind of him to

29:53

give me that part of the

29:55

song, to give me so much of

29:57

the song, to be able to

29:59

also give me, a hug, and a ring.

30:01

And I got here by the ring,

30:04

I didn't notice it. My wife watched

30:06

it a couple of times, she's like,

30:08

she gives him something, and Whitlock, like,

30:10

he gave you his ring, that was

30:12

on his finger. Like, tell me about

30:15

that. Tell me about that. And I

30:17

guess you blocked out, you just, you

30:19

probably didn't even realize that for, I

30:21

got a ring, right? and this ring

30:23

it's called in ward it seems to

30:26

be a brand that he sponsors so

30:28

he will usually at his foreigner concert

30:30

or like at his concerts abroad he

30:32

will usually have I believe two rings

30:34

and then also an ear ring as

30:37

well that he then gives to the

30:39

crowd and then sunglasses to so that

30:41

day It was very interesting. That day,

30:43

a friend of mine that I had

30:46

met at the 2018 concert that I

30:48

had gone and said hello to before

30:50

the concert started, she was the one

30:52

that then received his earring. So I

30:54

know, right? So both of us got

30:57

to take pictures together of both my

30:59

ring and her earring and it just

31:01

meant so much. to us to be

31:03

able to have something so close to

31:05

him and like personally from him as

31:08

well. So in Chinese they call that

31:10

process of like the singer or the

31:12

actor like going up to the audience

31:14

and everyone's like reaching out right? They

31:16

call it feeding the fish. Wayy. That

31:19

makes sense. Yeah, I all got it.

31:21

Which totally makes sense. Yeah, but Wayy

31:23

is something that he's not able to

31:25

do in... China during Chinese concerts because

31:28

the stages are set very differently and

31:30

much more like safely and then with

31:32

concerts abroad it really does depend on

31:34

the kind of location and also like

31:36

the security present the way way

31:39

that all of

31:41

the seats are set

31:43

up. So for that

31:45

that location, in me

31:47

being in the second

31:50

row, I was

31:52

able to hop up

31:54

to the first

31:56

row was in I was

31:58

in the center have

32:01

to and didn't have

32:03

to scurry over

32:05

to like the sides

32:07

or the corners been

32:10

there would have

32:12

already been like so

32:14

many other people. So

32:16

just the the design

32:18

of everything was like

32:21

so perfect for

32:23

that. and leading up to that

32:25

moment. and then then. You had

32:27

mention this absolutely viral.

32:29

viral. There's been so much filming, You I guess

32:31

you had a friend filming, you had a

32:33

on your phone, right, on

32:35

just cameras from the other concert,

32:38

right? Yes, from the tons of

32:40

different angles of this happening

32:43

angles of different angles And many

32:45

getting a lot of attention.

32:47

a However, my angle, my

32:49

because I was holding my

32:51

phone the entire time, time.

32:53

I've always you? Oh, you were you were that

32:55

whole thing? that I didn't realize that. didn't So

32:58

So I was doing and if you

33:00

look at like even the picture that

33:02

he posted on of him and I of

33:04

am holding my phone Oh, really?

33:06

Oh, really? myself because what I have

33:08

been doing during concerts like any

33:10

concerts that I go to is

33:12

that I'll have a camera for

33:14

for- footage of the stage and

33:16

then a camera of taking footage

33:18

of my own reactions my own I'm

33:20

able to get both of those those.

33:22

even for the footage of me

33:24

me with with Tien I was

33:26

able to have both sides to

33:28

both his reaction and my own

33:30

reaction as well own reaction as is such

33:33

a once in a a lifetime.

33:35

moment. If you guys you guys haven't seen

33:37

that video. you got to gotta see, it's

33:39

pretty awesome. awesome. And like I say, she's

33:41

super nice. nice. You really, something like this could have

33:43

happened to a better person. have happened

33:45

to a better Karma is nice to

33:47

you, right? karma is nice And here

33:49

it is. And here it is. Number

33:51

1. Matthew Matthew William

33:54

episode 134. Episode 134. From

33:56

American Chinese Chinese films, the

33:58

journey of Matt Williams. Knowles. I call

34:00

this my I call this

34:03

story rich when story. rich agents

34:05

came out ha. spent because when in

34:07

rich agents came out, and I some

34:09

time in Singapore for a summer. And

34:12

I was like, this isn't crazy

34:14

rich agents. This is like a

34:16

medium low-key what Singapore is like low

34:18

key my Singapore really is. Because my

34:20

experience in Singapore was just, it

34:23

also is another life changing experience

34:25

which which connect to this eventually. this

34:27

eventually. The summer

34:29

after two years in two years in I

34:31

back to the flew back to the US

34:33

to visit my family. And then I then

34:35

I was flying back to Chengdu

34:37

to start studying Chinese. And I

34:40

flew through Singapore on a connecting

34:42

flight. And then I took

34:44

a layover for a week. of

34:46

my One of my college buddies

34:48

was there working for Bank

34:50

of America. And so I so I

34:52

was sleeping on his floor. up

34:54

bed, up bed. kind of and kind

34:56

of explore the city. city. And I took my

34:58

bag took my bag with all my

35:00

stuff to the beach one day in

35:02

Sentosa Beach and jumped in the in

35:05

the water, came back. and all my stuff

35:07

was stuff is stolen. In

35:09

Singapore? Yeah, my phone, my flip-flops, my

35:11

my phone, my

35:13

flip flops, my was stolen.

35:15

And everything. if you know was

35:17

stolen. And actually, if you know anything

35:20

about Singapore, the craziest part of the story,

35:22

because nothing ever gets stolen in Singapore. It's

35:24

like the safest place in the world. Yeah,

35:26

Yeah, seriously. but my stuff got stolen,

35:28

And so I I was stuck at

35:30

Sintosa Beach barefoot in a a bathing

35:32

suit and had to like my way

35:35

home. way home. And then got got

35:37

stuck in Singapore while my my mom

35:39

sent over a new phone

35:41

and identification and some other

35:43

stuff. And so my so was nice

35:45

to My buddy was nice to let me keep staying

35:47

with him for a while. while. But after another

35:49

two weeks, I think he like, do you

35:51

think you could find could else to stay?

35:54

else to stay? was like, oh, like on my floor. I

35:56

was like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm interesting. So

35:58

I did this thing called couch couch surfing. She's

36:00

the website, right? I had never done

36:02

it before, made a profile. First person

36:04

that messes me was this guy named

36:06

Lee. And she said, hey, I'm house

36:08

sitting, this house. And I just kind

36:11

of cook here during the day and

36:13

then I go home to my home

36:15

and sleep at night and you're welcome

36:17

to come stay here. So I said,

36:19

sure. So I went and stood up

36:21

and it was this huge house. Turned

36:23

out it was like some ambassador's house

36:25

and they were homely for six months.

36:28

And then she said, you can stay

36:30

here, you know, as long as you

36:32

want, but you can only stay in

36:34

the kids room. And in the kids

36:36

room was this red race car bed.

36:38

So I ended up staying there almost

36:40

three months and sleeping every day on

36:42

this red race car bed. But you

36:45

know, I'm a tall guy, six, five.

36:47

So my feet were like, legs were

36:49

hanging off like two feet off. You

36:51

know, I'm this huge house sleeping on

36:53

this red race car bed, but whatever.

36:55

But it was a free place to

36:57

stay. in Singapore, which is not cheap.

36:59

No. And so then I'm like walking

37:02

around the town and I kind of

37:04

meet some friends of friends there and

37:06

start making a few friends. And so

37:08

they would invite me to come, you

37:10

know, to dinner or to go out,

37:12

have a drink at night. And it

37:14

got to be where I was just

37:16

like running. I had not made any

37:19

money in a couple of years. I

37:21

was going to just come out of

37:23

college. It was super poor. And so

37:25

I started running out of money. So

37:27

I couldn't like take taxis any more.

37:29

Then the subway was too expensive for

37:31

me, so I was like walking everywhere.

37:33

And one of the guys I was

37:36

hanging out with was this host and

37:38

model in Singapore. Really cool guy. I

37:40

mean Paul Foster. And you know, one

37:42

day I think we were out one

37:44

night and he said he was like,

37:46

oh you're handsome guy, something like that.

37:48

And he was like, you should do

37:50

modeling. I couldn't possibly do that. But

37:53

then I was like, can I make

37:55

some money doing that? And he was

37:57

like, let me introduce you to my

37:59

agent. So. He introduced in his

38:01

his agent and they signed

38:03

me. and I was a

38:05

terrible model. I didn't book anything

38:07

except for one job. I booked

38:09

this like this campaign for HTC

38:11

camera phones. I don't

38:14

know off up here Yeah,

38:16

whatever, then they said

38:18

you look like a Viking

38:21

I hadn't shaved or cut my hair in

38:23

two years when I was in Guajillo.

38:25

Oh, wow. okay So they were like, There's

38:27

this movie. called Viking them.

38:29

It's like a Hollywood Malaysian

38:32

co -production film that's casting right

38:34

now. and they need people that look like Vikings. You

38:37

look like a Viking. So you're a Viking.

38:39

You're like, yes, I do. You should

38:41

audition for this film. and I was like,

38:43

sure, I've never done a film or

38:45

I don't even know, what does that

38:47

mean? What does audition mean? And then

38:49

I went to Malaysia and did this

38:51

audition and then I got booked this

38:53

role, it's a tiny role as a Viking

38:55

warrior. on this you know,

38:57

Malaysian -production film. Will you like kind

38:59

of an extra or will you actually

39:02

like have a role per se? I

39:04

was what they call a

39:06

preferred extra. Oh, very

39:08

good. So prefer you to

39:10

the other extras and then

39:13

you get the opportunity to

39:15

have some lines. Wow. and

39:17

a couple of scenes. Because of

39:19

your striking, Viking features. Yes. and

39:21

so you're about as small of

39:23

an actor as possibly could possibly

39:25

be. you get a little, you

39:27

know, in there. a yell on,

39:29

you know, something Go

39:32

it. No, don't stop, you know, I don't

39:34

know what it was. So anyway,

39:36

I booked this role this movie. Okay,

39:39

Back in Singapore, besides becoming

39:41

a model there and an

39:43

actor, apparently. One day I met this gal

39:45

who's like one of my best friends in the world now

39:47

in Korean And she was the

39:49

owner of a bar that we went to. And

39:51

she added my WhatsApp. The next day she

39:53

messaged me. She was so so nice to meet

39:55

you. I really enjoyed her conversation. I have

39:58

a question. Would you like to come have? T

40:00

with the the president. And I

40:02

was like, like, oh, the president of what? of

40:04

what? like, oh, like, oh, president

40:06

of Singapore. It's like, uh, sure. Wow.

40:09

I've I've never had T with

40:11

the before. Yeah, Yeah, be great.

40:13

Let's do it. Let's so Yeah.

40:15

And so invited. had two people

40:17

to go, to myself and this other guy

40:19

who had just moved to Singapore. move

40:22

to Singapore. guy named

40:24

Ed named Ed Savarin, was the

40:26

co -founder of Facebook. Facebook. and it

40:28

just moved to Singapore. Singapore, took

40:30

his fortune over there, over there, like, you

40:32

know, you the richest guys in Singapore.

40:34

richest guys so the next day, the

40:37

three of us roll up to us roll

40:39

which is like the White House

40:41

of Singapore. House of Singapore, and Ed's

40:43

pimped whatever it was. it was,

40:45

we get out and President Nathan

40:47

comes down the steps in

40:49

front of in front of the Isitana,

40:52

arms open wide, wide, right at

40:54

me. me, and it's good to see

40:56

you again. you again. I'm like, oh sir,

40:58

like, oh, sir, met, we've never met. you

41:00

I've never met you before. He's like, I

41:03

no, no, I never forget a face.

41:05

So good to see you. He was obviously just

41:07

being very just being very nice he we

41:09

hadn't met. But he ended up inviting

41:11

us into his house, and we had tea with And

41:13

we had tea with him and his

41:15

family. took this And we took this picture

41:17

together. us his then he gifted

41:19

us his tickets us we were leaving,

41:21

gifted us his tickets to the one

41:23

race the Formula 1 race that was

41:25

happening the next week in Singapore. Wow.

41:27

So the next week we went to the The

41:29

next week, we went to the Formula

41:32

One race, sat in the presidential seats

41:34

glass the paddock club, pit. You can this glass

41:36

box still the pit. in can like -

41:38

Is this the point you're still sleeping

41:40

in the race car bed? in the race I'm

41:42

still sleeping in the race car bed.

41:44

the I can't even afford the taxis

41:46

to get the think was was out of

41:48

the question too. It was walking everywhere. you

41:50

know You know. So it's like I'm like I'm

41:52

hanging out with the richest people in

41:54

Singapore, and I'm the poorest one Singapore.

41:56

And so we had so we had this

41:58

amazing experience in the Paddock Club. could like walk

42:00

down and meet the drivers and we

42:03

barely even watch the race because you

42:05

could order any wine you wanted in

42:07

the world and all this food and

42:09

free massages and long and odd everything.

42:11

And then I was friends with this

42:13

group of people with Ed and his

42:15

friends and I think they were in

42:17

their party days so you know every

42:20

night every other night they were going

42:22

out. And that song was popular, champagne

42:24

showers was popular at the time. And

42:26

they were literally just buying like crystal

42:28

bottles, you know, pouring them on the

42:30

floor and, you know, this crazy, crazy,

42:32

just crazy party time. And then here

42:34

I am, like, my beard and look

42:37

like a backpacker or Viking and partying

42:39

with them. And, you know, I had

42:41

never parted in my life. And it

42:43

was this crazy, crazy experience. And then

42:45

all of a sudden, I got my.

42:47

My phone got through customs, got my

42:49

identification, and I was like, this is

42:51

amazing, but I need to go to

42:54

China because I speak Mandarin, and for

42:56

some reason I need to keep one

42:58

of this journey. Wow. And so I

43:00

tore myself away from Singapore and then

43:02

moved to Chengdu. Wow. Life, you know,

43:04

went back to normal. John, I gotta

43:06

be honest. like his interview there were

43:08

so many crazy awesome stories that you

43:11

know it was hard to pick it

43:13

out but like this one was like

43:15

the top. Tell us what you liked

43:17

about this one Jared. It's interesting to

43:19

me how it highlights deals just like

43:21

the disparity and he talks about that

43:23

right in his story about like meeting

43:25

the president of Singapore and he's like

43:28

penniless living in somebody's home in a

43:30

race car bed. It's those low lows

43:32

that make the highs all the higher

43:34

right? But you know his story is

43:36

wonderful because you know it talks about

43:38

that right about how he really just

43:40

kind of kept going he persevere and

43:42

he just he stuck with it and

43:45

just opportunities came and if you listen

43:47

to his whole interview too I mean

43:49

he lived in these small towns and

43:51

it really got him outside

43:53

of his comfort zone

43:55

and zone and had

43:57

all these really interesting

44:00

adventures and experiences

44:02

that brought him to

44:04

where he was

44:06

today. brought him to it really makes you

44:08

think. Yeah, so it really you are willing to go

44:10

outside of your comfort zone, and you're willing

44:12

to put in the time, and you're willing

44:14

to do what it takes to learn Chinese,

44:16

do what it takes could that do for you? Where

44:18

could that take you, right? could that And

44:21

I think that's a great question for everybody

44:23

out there, question knows what's next for you?

44:25

what's Who knows what type of

44:27

experiences you're going to have going you're

44:29

learning Chinese, because you can speak some

44:31

Chinese or read some Chinese. or read

44:33

It's a world of endless possibilities out

44:35

there, and Chinese can do a

44:37

whole bunch for you a providing a

44:40

lot of interesting and developmental life experiences

44:42

and even career opportunities. Yeah, mean,

44:44

that's definitely been true for me been

44:46

I sort of started picking up Chinese

44:48

on a whim a whim up going

44:50

to China. to China. And then, you know, before

44:52

I know it, I'm changing the course of my

44:54

life. I'm getting a my life. degree. I'm marrying a

44:56

Chinese person. a My family is

44:58

now Chinese. is now Chinese. Crazy, right?

45:00

right? we're going to put this gonna put this
