Depending on the type of narrative you enjoy, this one might not be for you. I fell in love with TMA for it's deliciously spooky monster-of-the-week story-telling, which I found well written, unique and perfectly formatted, each episode portrayed as a singular supernatural event being transcribed to tape. I even enjoyed it when the show writers began to slowly include recurring themes and monsters, hinting at greater conspiracies. That was fun. The writers got really into their world-building and hey- who can blame them? However seasons 4 and 5 took a huge turn in layout. The episodes were no longer about specific incidents but rather became chapters of a singular overarching plot which- when you're talking 20+ episodes a season- means the plot is moving very, very slowly. Yes, most episodes still contain the cornerstone spooky 'statement' but now even the characters treat this as a tiring obligation, rather than what drew most listeners in to begin with. The horror aspect in the final season especially becomes repetitive, the language reduced to spooky buzzwords copy-pasted into the script like a macabre resume. Perhaps another drawback to the final seasons is the reek of pandering (I promise I'm not being one of THOSE people- good for the writers y'know. Patreon pays the bills, I get it). For a podcast supposedly about horror, why am I being forced to suffer the intricate relationships of the single most bland characters in existence. Even Jon, the avatar of an eldritch God was somehow sidelined in his own relationship with the human equivalent of a sugar-free marshmallow. Christ I'm queer and I actually began to contract homophobia from the ridiculous character arcs of the final season. Back on topic- I immensely enjoyed the first three seasons and do recommend this podcast, but if you find yourself bored by the character dialogue and non- statement content, the final season might not be for you. If you find yourself hanging in there after 100+ episodes thinking "maybe it picks back up, maybe it's worth it"- it's not. Finish early while you're still having fun. Definitely try it though!!
Delicious, finally some good f***ing horror podcast. Like it's subject, 'Apocalypse Songs' is an undiscovered gem with all the makings of a cult classic. The voice acting and special effects are absolutely second to none. Tied together with its deliciously horrifying subject matter, this is the first podcast to leave me well and truly scared. Literally right now I'm writing this review because it's almost midnight and I'm getting freaked out listening. I love it, it's been far too long since anything has given me the willies like this. The writers, producers and sound designers are absolute geniuses and the voice acting are so talented. The first episode in I had to double check whether this was still non-fiction, Cassandra masters her role that well.
My boyfriend is sick of me talking about this podcast, but I can't help being obsessed. It's gruesome, dark, disgusting and absolutely hilarious. Every time it seems like the plot is slowing down you get ricocheted into new depths of the mystery. It's my go-to play list to introduce friends to just to hear them inevitably cry 'that's f***ed up' and 'oh he's CRAZY crazy'. You can't help but love the (at first) innocuous then steadily more deranged Mike as he chases the secrets to time travel. This podcast left me wondering "who... is the bear?'.
