1:11
to True Crime Garage, wherever you are, whatever
1:13
you're doing, thanks for listening. I'm your host
1:15
Nick and with me as always is a
1:17
man who saw the lights go out on
1:20
Broadway. Here is the captain. And in that
1:22
moment it wasn't good to be seen and
1:24
it wasn't good to see you. Thanks
1:27
for listening. It's Fertona Fred.
1:32
Today we are still drinking some
1:35
gravel donuts by the good folks
1:37
over at Outer Belt Brewing. This
1:39
is a solid IPA, a great
1:41
New England IPA. It's a mild
1:43
hazy but not mild on flavor.
1:46
It reminds me a little
1:48
bit more of a Midwest IPA.
1:51
Juicy with just the right amount of
1:53
bitterness. Garage grade four and a half
1:55
bottle caps out of five. Now
1:57
let's give some thanks and praise to our friends. for
2:00
helping us out this week. First up,
2:03
a big shout out to Logan and
2:05
Layla and Fort William. And a big
2:07
we like to chip goes out to
2:09
Sarah Coughlin from North Granby. And here's
2:12
a cheers to Minnows Mama from Listan,
2:14
Indiana. And last but certainly not least,
2:16
we have Sharon Spiller from
2:18
Richmond, Virginia. Everyone we mentioned, they went to
2:20
our website, clicked on that pint glass. That
2:22
put some beer in the fridge for us
2:25
for this week. And for that, we
2:28
say thank you. Yeah, B-W-E-W-R-U-N,
2:30
beer run. If you wanna keep the lights on,
2:32
you wanna keep the show going, support
2:35
us on Patreon or through
2:37
Apple subscription. And Colonel,
2:39
that's enough of the business. All right,
2:41
everybody gather around, grab a chair, grab
2:43
a beer. Let's talk some true
2:45
crime. The police
2:48
were tracking
2:50
down these
2:53
leaves. They
3:07
were following where the evidence was
3:09
taking them. This information
3:11
that they had gleaned from the
3:14
sales reports of these knives
3:16
had taken them to the doorstep of
3:19
Jim Parker and his parents. And
3:22
before even leaving the
3:24
Parker residence, some of
3:26
these other detectives, remember we said that
3:28
there were 30 plus
3:30
investigators working this case.
3:33
They sent other investigators to
3:36
the home of the Tullocks to
3:39
interview best friend
3:41
of Jim Parker, Robert Tullock. Remember
3:43
Jim told the police, I bought the two
3:45
knives for me and my buddy. One
3:48
was gonna be mine, one was gonna be his. This is
3:50
what we bought them for. They didn't work out well, so
3:52
we sold them. During that sit down,
3:55
the police aren't really trusting what Jim
3:57
Parker is saying because he looks so
3:59
nervous. In fact, one of
4:01
the detectives telling Jim Parker, look, I've been
4:03
doing this long enough. I can tell when
4:05
somebody's lying to me kind
4:07
of planting that seed of not calling
4:09
him a liar, not saying he's a
4:11
liar, not especially in front
4:13
of his parents, but planting that seed
4:15
of I kind of know you're not
4:18
telling me the whole story here. Right.
4:20
What we learn here, captain, is that
4:22
they did the right thing by sending
4:24
other investigators to talk to Robert Tullock
4:26
and his parents. You
4:28
want to keep these two separate, but
4:30
the reason for doing so in that
4:32
moment was not because
4:35
the detectives were
4:37
suspicious that Jim Parker had
4:39
killed the Xantops, not
4:42
because they were suspicious that even his
4:45
buddy Robert Tullock had killed
4:47
the Xantops. They somewhat
4:50
believed the story
4:52
of selling these knives to somebody
4:54
or at least giving these knives
4:56
to somebody else. Right.
4:58
In that moment, investigators
5:00
believed we're talking
5:03
about two high school kids here.
5:05
We think they know something that they're not willing
5:08
to tell us. We think they know who they
5:10
gave or sold the knives to. And
5:13
if we can find that person or persons,
5:15
that is very likely our killer. Now
5:18
the flip side of that coin
5:22
is you have detectives at the
5:24
home of Diane and Mike Tullock.
5:27
Robert, their son is home at that time as
5:29
well. So now we have a sit down going
5:31
on at the Tullock's home, very
5:33
similar to what was taking place at
5:36
the Parker residence. But if you're law enforcement,
5:38
you have to remember when you're at the
5:40
Parker's house, what do you see? A
5:43
green Subaru. Now
5:45
you're talking to his buddy, you're
5:47
at the Tullock's house and what
5:49
do you find? A
5:51
pair of hiking boots, same
5:53
size, same brand, same
5:56
brand. And again, it's a unique
5:58
brand. It's unique. New
6:00
York. You know what they're not seeing at the
6:02
Tulloch's house that they were seeing at the Parker's
6:05
is a very nervous teenager. This
6:08
Robert Tulloch was described as cool as
6:10
a cucumber. Yes, they found size 11
6:12
and a half hiking boots, same brand
6:14
that they were looking for and they
6:17
asked the Tulloch's, can
6:19
we take these hiking boots with us for testing? Yeah.
6:23
Father Mike says, look, those are my
6:25
son's boots. Should I get
6:27
an attorney here? What's my move
6:29
here? And the detective was
6:31
very cool as a cucumber as
6:34
well. Tells the father, look, if you say
6:36
the boots stay, they stay. If
6:38
you tell me that I can take them, we're going to take
6:41
them, we're going to test them and we'll give them back to
6:43
you. And so Father
6:45
Mike tells his son, Robert, these are
6:47
your boots. What do you say?
6:49
Robert says, go ahead and take them. So
6:52
they take the boots and Robert also
6:54
says, just like Jim Parker said, he
6:57
was willing to go down to the sheriff's
6:59
office and be fingerprinted. And
7:02
so he's there at the sheriff's
7:05
office. He sees his buddy Jim
7:07
there as well. They don't, they don't talk while
7:09
they're there at all, but they do see each
7:11
other and recognize that each other is at
7:14
the sheriff's office, both for the
7:16
purpose of getting fingerprinted. And I'm sure probably
7:18
some other questionings going on at
7:21
this time. Now police,
7:24
the authorities let both of
7:26
these teenagers go after
7:29
joining them at the sheriff's office for a bit. The
7:31
cops let both Robert and Jim go home with their
7:34
parents that day because really the reality
7:36
of it at that time
7:38
was despite all the signs pointing
7:41
strongly at these two boys
7:43
knowing something or being involved,
7:47
it seemed like the police needed
7:50
more to build their case or just didn't think that these
7:53
kids were vicious killers. Their high
7:55
schoolers, their parents loved them. They
7:58
seem to be responsible. respectful and
8:00
polite. We know the
8:03
police were wrong, at least in that moment. The
8:05
boys parents rightfully so had forbidden the
8:08
two of them to contact each other
8:10
until this whole thing got sorted out.
8:12
It appears that both parents thought
8:14
that this was just some kind of
8:17
misunderstanding, right? That the cops weren't being
8:19
rude or being bad cops. They had
8:21
evidence that led them to their sons.
8:23
Their sons are cooperating. They're cooperating. Well,
8:26
they seem like nice kids from
8:28
a nice family, nice community, popular
8:32
kids. It just
8:34
seems very strange. And what is
8:36
their connection to these
8:38
professors? None. There is none. And
8:40
then what is the connection to
8:42
even the college? None. To
8:45
the town of Edna. They
8:48
had never, as far
8:50
as the parents were concerned, they had
8:52
never been there. Their sons had never been
8:54
there. One thing that we
8:57
shouldn't, we need to make sure
8:59
that we don't miss here and is of note
9:03
is that Robert
9:05
Tullock had a pretty bad cut on
9:07
his leg. And
9:09
that of course did not go unnoticed
9:12
by the detectives. If I'm a detective,
9:14
I'm going, well, I'm looking into these
9:16
two kids and I'm getting
9:18
some yeses, but I'm getting some noes too.
9:22
But I need to keep them on the
9:24
radar. They're not supposed to have communication with
9:26
each other, but that's not what happens. Yeah.
9:28
If you're detectives, you're thinking, I have
9:31
their fingerprint information. I have their,
9:33
the boot, the boot. And
9:36
so now I'm going to, I'm going to take
9:38
this, give it to the people that can make
9:40
the comparisons and wait to
9:42
hear those results. But
9:46
they do. Yes. Captain's right. The
9:48
two, the two teenage sons contact
9:50
each other, even though
9:52
the parents said that they were not to speak to
9:55
one another. They, they do what every other teenager does.
9:57
You just wait till mom and dad fall asleep. and
10:00
do what you're told not to do. So they
10:03
make some communication via phone call
10:05
and it appears that
10:07
that is all they needed to
10:09
ignite the
10:11
two onto a get
10:14
out of dodge situation. We
10:16
do have John Parker, Jim's
10:18
father, who says that he
10:20
was sleeping, but then he
10:22
heard a vehicle
10:25
startup and he
10:27
runs to the window. He sees
10:29
Jim driving and pulling
10:31
out of the driveway. This
10:35
is a silver Audie that is owned by
10:37
the Parker family.
10:41
He quickly, John Parker, the father quickly
10:44
calls the Tollux right
10:46
to say, Hey, my son just took off
10:48
in our car. I'm guessing
10:50
he's probably going to your place to see your son.
10:53
The phone keeps ringing and ringing and ringing.
10:55
He tries a few different times. Nobody picks
10:57
up. If you're a little bit suspicious of
10:59
your teenage son
11:03
doing something very dumb and
11:05
very heinous, I think
11:07
your suspicions and your red flags,
11:10
all the alarm bells are going
11:12
off as your son
11:14
is leaving the house that night. Yeah. So
11:18
John finds a note left by Jim,
11:22
his son that says, I just had
11:24
to talk to Robert alone. I will
11:26
be back in the morning. Don't call
11:28
the cops. Again, another red flag. So
11:30
dad tries calling
11:32
the Tollux house. Nobody
11:34
answers. He hops in another
11:36
vehicle and drives out to the
11:39
Tollux home. And
11:42
now eventually we have parents talking
11:44
to parents face to face. John
11:47
Parker tells the Tollux about the note
11:49
that Jim had left. The
11:51
parents kind of agreed like, okay,
11:53
this makes some sense. Our kids
11:55
aren't used to being talked or interviewed by
11:58
detectives or police. They were just. at
12:00
the sheriff's office. Okay,
12:02
this makes some sense here. They probably just
12:04
wanted to talk, go somewhere and sort
12:07
some stuff out. And maybe they would be
12:09
back in the morning, just like Jim's note
12:11
indicated. They were not, they
12:13
did not come back that morning. Right. John
12:15
Parker calls the lead
12:17
investigator, Chuck West. This is at
12:19
11am and he says, my son
12:21
Jim is gone. So
12:24
an APB went out for Robert Tolic and
12:26
Jim Parker and that silver 1987 Audi 500
12:31
that they were driving with Vermont
12:33
plate CDG 690. So
12:36
officers from various agencies working the
12:38
case gathered to draft
12:40
search warrants, right? Because
12:42
now you're, these two teenagers are behaving
12:45
very suspiciously and appear to be on
12:47
the run. So you
12:49
are not waiting for test results to
12:51
come back at this point. Now you're
12:53
getting search warrants, but
12:55
all at the same time here, captain,
12:58
the lab reports do come back fingerprints
13:00
on the knife sheaths matched Jim Parker.
13:04
And of course he admitted to owning the
13:06
knives and he has no reason to be
13:08
there. No, the
13:10
sheets had been found in the room
13:13
with the dead bodies of Mr. And
13:15
Mrs. Zantop. Right. And now police had
13:17
confirmation that the knives Jim and Robert
13:19
had admitted to owning were in fact
13:21
the murder weapons Vermont
13:23
state police trooper Jocelyn
13:26
stole. She's
13:28
out driving and her cruiser, she's
13:30
rushing off to an unrelated emergency
13:33
call when she comes
13:35
across a car stuck in the snow on
13:37
Bethel mountain road. So this is, this
13:41
is the Aldi, the 1987
13:43
silver Aldi was stuck
13:46
on the side of the road after
13:49
it appears it had skidded on
13:52
a ice patch. The
13:54
two, there's two teenage boys dressed
13:56
in black standing outside of the
13:58
car. They agreed
14:00
to provide license and registration, but
14:03
something about them triggered Stull's
14:06
Spidey senses. She's
14:08
asking, you know, where are you going? They
14:11
say that they're going skiing. This
14:15
is a state trooper. She's like, sure,
14:17
you're going skiing. And the
14:19
ski mountain was, there is a
14:21
ski mountain in that area. It's
14:24
in the opposite direction of where they were traveling. So
14:26
that's a, that's a flag. Further,
14:29
the boys are not dressed for skiing and
14:33
the vehicle, there is no
14:35
skiing gear with them. Instead,
14:37
what she sees is two large
14:39
black backpacks bulging with something inside.
14:42
These are in the vehicle. The
14:45
boys were shifty and weird, Stull
14:47
ran their licenses, finds
14:50
no records, but she also
14:52
knew that there had been some burglaries in the area.
14:54
So this is what she's suspicious of that
14:57
these guys might, these teenagers might've been
14:59
breaking into houses, but
15:01
she was in a hurry. Remember she's got that other
15:03
emergency that she needs to
15:06
respond to. So she quickly
15:08
puts together a report and has to race off to
15:10
this other scene. The last line of
15:12
her report about this incident, finding the boys in
15:14
the vehicle on the side of the road reads,
15:17
my suspicions of criminal activity
15:20
were significant. Now
15:23
we have these search
15:25
warrants are in full effects right
15:27
now. We got searchers
15:29
tackling Robert's room. In
15:32
Robert Tollec's room, we have
15:35
Gary Lawrence, who
15:37
noticed a cardboard Florida
15:39
citrus box in the corner of
15:42
his room tucked in next
15:44
to a bureau inside of
15:46
this cardboard box. They
15:49
find some notebooks and other stuff. Other
15:52
than notebooks were two duct
15:54
tape bundles that turned out to
15:56
be a
15:58
mitten and a sock. inside
16:01
those that mitten
16:04
that was wrapped in duct tape and that sock
16:06
that was wrapped in duct tape they
16:09
find foot long SOG
16:11
seal 2000 knife in each in Robert's
16:17
haste to get out of
16:19
Dodge it appears
16:21
he had completely forgot to pack the
16:23
knives at the
16:25
murder scene the murders
16:27
completely forgot to leave the
16:29
scene with the sheaths here
16:32
these two kids appear to have taken off on
16:34
the run and by
16:37
the time that Robert realizes that
16:40
he forgot to bring the knives they're
16:43
already on the road he and Jim are
16:45
already on the road so now the police
16:47
are in possession of the suspected murder weapons
16:51
the boy story was that
16:53
they had sold these knives to some guy
16:56
well you know
16:58
that's not true Parker and Talaq
17:00
they're young and dumb mm-hmm other
17:03
item sees from both homes were
17:05
clothing computers notebooks writings
17:07
and a book about Hitler a
17:10
search of the Parker's green Subaru
17:12
yielded a floor mat that was
17:14
taken for testing it would come
17:16
back with positive with
17:19
positive blood evidence
17:21
and the blood belonging to Suzanne
17:23
Zantop so we have the fingerprint
17:25
evidence we have the boot print
17:28
evidence this is all matching our
17:30
two kids
17:32
suspects mm-hmm and now
17:35
we find the murder weapons in
17:38
their possession yes yeah it's it's in
17:40
the room of one of your suspects
17:42
bedroom of one of your suspects and
17:46
well and now we have these two
17:48
numb nuts they're on the run yeah
17:50
law enforcement so you're going to collect
17:52
this evidence and you're going to charge
17:55
both of these individuals with the
17:57
slayings even though that they are
17:59
not escape
46:01
that he was planning. So he
46:03
was sent to the state prison in
46:06
Concord and assigned a maximum security cell
46:08
in the secured housing unit until he
46:10
was deemed eligible to be returned to
46:12
gen pop. So for a while they
46:14
did, they were housed in the
46:17
same facility. Bootprint evidence, the
46:19
confessions, the murder weapons. That's
46:21
a lot. And look, that's
46:24
a thorough job by detectives and
46:26
by the New Hampshire state police,
46:28
the ball and, and
46:31
the, the sheriffs for catching them on the
46:33
run. Shout out to those boys in Indiana.
46:36
Yeah. Now, I
46:38
don't want to go too far down this road, but
46:41
the, there was a in 2012. So
46:44
the U S Supreme court made a ruling
46:46
in Miller V Alabama in 2012 after that
46:50
ruling, five New Hampshire cases came
46:53
under review based off of
46:55
that ruling off of that Supreme court
46:57
ruling. This, one of those
46:59
included Robert Tullocks. As
47:02
a result of that in 2014, a
47:04
superior court in New Hampshire ruled
47:07
that this applied retroactively to Robert
47:11
Tullocks case along with some others that
47:14
it would be up for review for resentencing
47:17
the state appealed, but the New
47:19
Hampshire state court affirmed. So
47:22
appeals by the defendants in the
47:24
other cases held up as well.
47:26
Robert is
47:29
currently scheduled for a resentencing hearing sometime in 2024. In
47:35
fact, it's originally scheduled
47:37
for Joe for July. So that
47:39
may have already happened. He may
47:41
have already been resentenced. As for
47:43
Jim in the fall of 2018, his
47:46
attorney petitioned the court for an
47:48
early release. Remember he would be
47:50
eligible for an early release or
47:52
reduced sentence after having served at
47:55
least 16 years of that original
47:57
sentence. The short of it
47:59
as much. this
56:00
case that really captured
